5 out of 5 stars This book will help you connect the dots.......2007-09-06

This book is worth $100. Actually, it is priceless. If your child is language delayed, fussy and quirky, more mercurial than his/her peers...this book will help you identify these behaviors and discover the reasons behind your child's actions. Finally, you will understand the communication difficulties your child is experiencing and you will understand why he/she acts as they do.

This book is easy to read. You will recognize your child in the identified behaviors and you will discover that there may be multiple issues. Our child had been diagnosed with intermittent middle-ear fluid by a highly skilled team: ENT, Speech Pathologist and Audiologist. But it was this book that help us pinpoint the other behaviors and discover/address the Auditory Processing issue. Our team was satisfied with the diagnosis of Middle Ear Fluid for our child's language articulation issues...and this book is helping us get our child the help she needs.

I received this book and was really surprised to see what great shape it was in for a used book. It liked a new book. I will definitely keep using Amazon for my book needs.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-19

I found this book more descriptive than practical. The author dwealt on characteristics of the various communication problems kids may have, and lengthy case studies. The real let down was practical tips on what parents can do about it! The author generally refers the reader to specialists like a speech pathologist or a "special education teacher" or a psychologist. You could save money by not buying this book, and just get a referral to a specialist.

A disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to help your child on speech problems.......2006-08-14

This is a great resource for parents who are trying to figure out if their children have some sort of language problem. The author does an excellent job by naming every different problem and defining very clearly each concept. It is also good to find resources to help your child in case you do not have insurance that can cover your child's speech therapy. The cases presented are also very good since some of them can apply to your real life situation. If you are looking for a great tool to confirm language issues, you have it!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of great info and very easy to read!.......2002-08-28

I found this book to be an excellent and comprehensive guide. My daughter has a speech and language problem, but until reading this book I didn't realize how her listening problems were related. I showed the book to her teacher and we able to get an audiologist who could diagnose her auditory processing problem. Now she is getting the right help, and I will be eternally grateful to this author for writing this fabulous book. I wish I had read this when she was younger because perhaps I would have known what to look for. The symptoms are subtle in the younger child and become a little more obvious once they are trying to function in a classroom. I highly recommend this book!!

Book Description

Wild at Heart helped men to rediscover their masculine hearts-to be the men God designed them to be. Now this small book goes a step further, encouraging fathers to pass this insight on to their children. It is not by accident, contends John Eldredge, that little boys dream of being heroes and little girls dream of being rescued by a prince. It is woven into the very fiber of the sexes. Men struggle with this most pivotal role, and Eldredge's writing is the affirmation and encouragement each man needs.

Eldredge gives fathers a look inside both themselves and their sons and daughters, encouraging them to give their children permission to be who God designed them to be.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for Dads.......2007-07-30

I have read several books dealing with the critical task of Dads raising their children. John Ortberg is a very gifted Christian writer that communicates some tremendous truths in a very small booklet. Don't let the size fool you, this book will convict you and give you some great tools to help you in your Christian walk and efforts in raising godly children.

4 out of 5 stars definately worth it.......2007-07-21

I purchased this book for my boyfriend who is also my baby's daddy to be. He said that it helped him realize that all it takes is love and affection and hard work to raise a child, and i think that is what he needed to hear. overall, i would definately recommend this book for anyone who needs an extra boost of confidence before the arrival of a loved one.

3 out of 5 stars Book is very small- not what I expected.......2007-07-07

This book is similar in size to a freebie handout. It was also over priced by Amazon at $4.99 when the back of the book's UPC label said that the book was priced at $2.99. I contacted Amazon and they corrected my bill immediately.

My husband really likes John Eldrege books and I think that he will enjoy the book... it was just not what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars It's never too late to begin healing........2007-06-06

John Eldredge is the author of numerous books, including WILD AT HEART, which sold more than two million copies and was used as the guide for hundreds of men's Bible study groups. He is one of many Christians who has recognized the value of fathers in raising children, and is not afraid to identify the differences between the genders and explain how they generate different needs. Eldredge demonstrates how understanding these needs and differences is essential to raising emotionally and spiritually healthy children.

Each chapter (which includes "The Secret to Boys"; "What a Father Needs to Do"; "Healing Wounds"; and "It's Never Too Late") is only a few pages long yet is packed with the core of emotions that everyone has experienced as a result of their own relationship with their father. Whether it was wonderful and everlasting or non-existent and painful, there is no denying that the father/child relationship is perhaps the most life-shaping of all.

In an age when "Who's Your Daddy?" has become a national joke, the existence of absentee, ineffectual and abusive fathers is just beginning to reap its consequences. Boys whose needs were not met by their fathers are growing up and becoming negligent parents as well. Many believe it is these unmet needs and resulting wounded spirits that are primarily responsible for creating the angry, frustrated and rebellious youth we see today.

In his down-to-earth writing style, Eldredge uses many personal anecdotes, linking them to Scriptures that illustrate the source of his beliefs. He concludes that ultimately it is God the Father who provides the model for love and forgiveness so necessary in healthy relationships.

YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES is sure to inspire those who read it to take action in their own lives. Whether your child is four or 40, it's never too late to begin healing.

Parents can sometimes feel like ships being tossed in the storm--trying to keep their households afloat amidst escalating child-care and health-care costs, declining funding for public schools, and workplaces that do not favor working families. The Irreducible Needs of Children reads like a social compass, or better yet, a family's true north. T. Berry Brazelton, one of the world's most respected pediatricians, joins with one of the most respected child psychiatrists, Stanley Greenspan, to offer parents, as well as caregivers, teachers, policymakers, and even custody-hearing judges clear-cut guidelines for rearing healthy, well-nurtured children.

Each chapter speaks to the fundamental priorities, such as "The Need for Ongoing, Nurturing Relationships" or "The Need for Limit Setting, Structure, and Expectations." In every chapter the two doctors offer a lively dialog as they boldly assert their child-rearing opinions based on solid research and their collective years of wisdom. They then lead into a list of joint recommendations. No topic is too controversial or specific for these hard-core child advocates, including how many hours a baby or toddler should be in child care per week (ideally less than 30), the importance of one-on-one time, setting up child-oriented custody arrangements, and how much homework or television a child should have each day. Although you may not agree with every recommendation, this makes an excellent navigational tool for parents and anyone else who controls the course of children's destinies. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

"What do you get when you cross an esteemed child psychiatrist with a noted pediatrician, both at the apex of their abilities? A darned important book, that's what."

-Library Journal (starred review).

What do babies and young children really need? For the first time, two famed advocates for children cut through all the theories, platitudes, and controversies that surround parenting advice to define what every child must have in the first years of life. They lay out the seven irreducible needs of any child, in any society, and confront such thorny questions as: How much time do children need one-on-one with a parent? What is the effect of shifting caregivers, of custody arrangements? Why are we knowingly letting children fail in school? Nothing is off limits. This short, hard-hitting book, the fruit of decades of experience and caring, sounds a wake-up call for parents, teachers, judges, social workers, policy makers-anyone who cares about the welfare of children.

I have read this book and its a great title to read.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant........2002-12-10

This book is directed to parents but also to anyone who works with children. It sums up the very heart of developmental pediatrics and what it takes to support children in our society today. It it has a flowing read, as if you were listening to our leading experts discuss and reflect, on their years of experience, what sort of direction that needs to happen, if our children are to be successful. Should be part of curriculum for teachers, medical or nursing students, or any who work with children. I relied on information obtained from the "What Every Baby Knows" series years ago and know that it set me in the right direction in parenting. Our country needs more of this. And we need it more now, than ever.

3 out of 5 stars This book was a bit boring.......2001-11-27

Chapter 1 The Need for Ongoing Nurturing Relationships
Chapter 2 The Need for Physical Protection, Safety, and Regulation,
Chapter 3 The Need for Experiences Tailored to Individual Differences
Chapter 4 The Need for Developmentally Appropriate Experiences
Chapter 5 The Need for Limit Setting, Structure, and Expectations
Chapter 6 The Need for Stable, Supportive Communities and Cultural Continunity
Chapter 7 Protecting the Future

This book was somewhat infomative and worthwhile to read because it gave suggestions and ideas on how we can make this world a better place for children. However, in the last chapter, I felt it was poorly written because the authors just stated the problems of our global enviornment and gave little advice or ideas on how we can protect out children's future. I also felt that the authors discussed too much on some of the issues mentioned in the book. While I found this book useful for a research paper, I didn't feel the authors did a excellent job of explaning the needs of children and how we can make it a better place for them.

3 out of 5 stars Good read for educators........2001-08-20

I was a little disappointed in this book. I am an educator but was reading from the perspective of a first time parent. It would be helpful for any teacher interested in teaching to individual differences. I wouldn't recommend this to parents unless they happen to be teachers as well.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Revolutionary and it's like reading a Thesis!.......2001-04-04

It's hard to believe Dr. Brazelton, who has written so many other brilliant parenting books, was an author of this book! It's not that the content was bad or controversially new - but as I read it I kept thinking "Been there, heard that. Where is the infamous Brazelton wisdom and humor usually found in his books?" This book reads like a thesis and is nothing like his other parenting books. This book was such a disappointment for a Dr. Brazelton fan.

    Book Description

On the occasion of its 10-year anniversary, this revised and updated version of What Every Mom Needs takes a look at what moms need, or want, for themselves during the busy years of mothering young children. Morgan (President of MOPS International) and Kuykendall (Director of Strategic Projects at MOPS International) are candid and articulate as they explore how meeting her personal needs of Identity, Growth, Relationship, Help, Perspective, and Hope enables a woman to be a better mom.

    5 out of 5 stars ENCOURAGING BOOK.......2006-12-21

A great book for the woman who feels like her only identity and purpose in life is to be a "Mom" and has forgotten her own name. This book encourages women to cultivate their own interests (again) and encourages women to make time for themselves, because one must be refreshed in order to refresh others. This book lets you know that you are not the alone in your struggles of parenthood, and that it's fine not to be the perfect "super mommy".

For readers who are turned off by the "evangelizing" in the book I have a few things to say to you: NO ONE FORCED YOU TO READ THIS BOOK. Don't be turned off by the writers' use of Biblical principles. They're only suggesting that you get into the Bible and become a better person. They're showing you a way to make your life easier, based upon their own (and countless other THOUSANDS of other women's) experiences.

1 out of 5 stars Secular/Non-Christian working parents need not read.......2006-03-07

I could sum up this book very quickly:
    1) Trust in God for everything
    2) Read the Bible
    3) Attend church
    4) Ask your husband, church, other Christians for help

The book is full of fluffy ideas like: "We need to know ourselves the way God knows us" "Find a Christian counselor" and advice for single mothers to simply attend church if seeking help.

The book primarily revolves around the Bible and its interpretation of parenting. Why not cut out the middle-man and just read this "wonderful book?" It's not like the Bible is a work in progress.

This book is more about proselytizing and keeping Evangelicals reading "inspired" books rather than competing viewpoints. And with America being one of the most pure Christian nations in the world ( US is more Christian than India is Hindu and Israel is Jewish ). Anything published by Zondervan should be looked at skeptically.

I also dislike how males are stilled deemed unworthy parents in the Christian community. They can assist and help , but cannot be considered primary parents. But given this books lack of true substance, I doubt it would have made any difference.

5 out of 5 stars Heaping Dose of Medicine.......2005-01-13

I purchased this book when my kids were preschoolers and I was struggling to find my place as a new mom. This book was a heaping dose of medicine to me that revealed that I wasn't alone in the emotional turmoil of the mothering role. It doesn't given parenting advice, but speaks to the hearts of mothers as individuals. It gives helpful building block ideas to help one to form a personal checklist and keep emotional and parenting health in check. I purchased about 20 more copies to sell in my ladies group since I felt there were so many new moms that would benefit from this. They all went! It's a keeper for me.

    4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed..........2004-07-14

I bought this book when my firstborn was a newborn and I was struggling with all of the changes involved in being a new mom. This book was a huge relief. Mom's are allowed to dream and grow! I just needed someone to tell me that...

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this book!.......2003-04-24

If you are a mom and are struggling with your new role and how to adjust, this book is for you!! It is funny, compassionate, and well-written. I love the realistic quotes from other moms as well as the inspiring ones from other books. Reading this reminds me that I do have a very important job and that I am important to my family. 2 out of 5 stars Not Helpful.......2004-01-26

A mom who lost her Bipolar son to suicide wrote this book based on her personal experience. It definately does not do what the subtitle says it does--give parents and professionals everything they need to know! I found that a new book, "If Your Child is Bipolar" gives great information on what parents need to do to take care of their Bipolar child and does a much, much better job. "The Bipolar Child" should also be on the bookshelf of every parent with a child who is or might be Bipolar.

    3 out of 5 stars too personal.......2003-10-29

This book has some good info, but is a very personal perspective of one person's experience--and her child committed suicide!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but very personal.......2003-09-28

While this book addresses many important topics related to childhood-onset Bipolar Disorder, it is also very closely tied to the author's personal experience of losing a child to the disorder. It provides one parent's perspective on medical treatment and suicide. It's can be a helpful resource, but could also be somewhat depressing for parents looking for solutions to their daily challenges.--Sheryl Gurrentz, co-author of "If Your Child is Bipolar--a parent to parent guide to living with and loving a Bipolar child"

4 out of 5 stars an impressive source of info about childhood bipolar.......2003-03-11

This book is a thorough guide to childhood bipolar disorder. It rivals "The Bipolar Child" in that it is an attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of the disorder to parents and doctors. I don't think it's quite as well written or well organized as "The Bipolar Child", but I still recommend that it be read since I think a number of sources of information should be used when approaching a complex subject like bipolar disorder. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

1 out of 5 stars Where is the editor?.......2000-10-07

This book is very short on organization and is written in a manner that is a bit hard to follow. Unimportant details are thrown in frequently; important parts of the story are worked in too late. I was having trouble understanding why ideas were misplaced in this book and I was nagged by thoughts like: "Why did the editor of this book not clean up the story sequence?".

The author does not cite that she possesses any particular training, and yet, she throws around all kinds of "facts" and figures about depression and other illnesses and does not bother to give the first clue about where she is getting specific bits of information (although there are references in the back). I know that some of the information is on the money, because I have read it elsewhere. But other items are surprising to me. I keep thinking "Where is the EDITOR of this book! "

I keep thinking "I wonder how many of these figures I should believe, if any?" When she sticks to her own experiences, the book is quite valuable, but when the author turns the thing into more of a textbook about half way through, I get frustrated. I am plagued by how and why the editor would allow so much academic-type information from someone with no apparent academic credentials in this area.

And then it strikes me, as you have probably already figured out. This is a self-published book. There IS no editor. No publisher at all is listed on the cover, but when you look inside, you see that it is printed by Benline Press--the first syllable being the name of the son.

I feel betrayed by the bookseller. I am not sure I would have ordered this book had I known that its publication was not supervised by a disinterested party. There is very little on the market about bipolar disorder in children, and I would like to see other attempts made.

    Book Description

How do I bring out the best in my child? What can I do to help my children reach their full potential? Why is it important to enocurage leadership in my child? John Maxwell protege, Dr. Tim Elmore, answers these questions and others in Nurturing the Leader Within Your Child. Using a survey of over 3,000 students, he enters the minds of today's youth to understand their desire to affect their world, their way.

Beginning with a foreword by John C. Maxwell, the book is in four unique sections (What You Need to Know, What They Need to Know, When to Seize the Moment, How to Pass it On). Dr. Elmore gives practical tools for bridging the generation gap to foster character and growth in your children. Offering a list of fundamental qualities every leader must possess, Dr. Elmore helps parents and youth workers recognize teachable moments and equips them to structure an individual mentoring plan for each child. Finally, he offers evaluation methods for recognizing progress.

    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING RESOURCE!.......2001-12-17

Tim Elmore is one of the finest yet-to-be-discovered leaders in
the areas of Church Ministry,Discipleship and Leadership having
a worldwide impact. Mentored by Dr. John Maxwell in the 1980's
while both were on staff at Skyline Church,San Diego CA, they
currently share ministry teamwork through Dr. Maxwell's INJOY organization based in Atlanta.

Tim has written several prior books, including the excellent
Soul Provider. He is highly sought out as a discipler of church,

ministry, missions and business leaders. He writes and speaks with
passion, expertise, yet humble acknowledgement of his true source
of insight: the Lord Jesus Christ through Biblical principles.

This book takes a step back from church/business leadership and asks "How are things at home?" If the successful principles that
are so effective outside the home are valid, how much moreso when
applied to identifying the next generation's leaders: our kids!

Weaving many practical principles with real life anecdotes and
down-to-earth illustrations of how Leadership works in his own
household, Elmore helps us identify leadership traits/potential
residing under our roof in the yet-to-be-developed young lives
of our kids. He recognizes that God has given us our children
as our most valuable resource for impacting this and future
generations; how much more should we invest in them what the
Bible teaches about "Train a child in the WAY HE/SHE SHOULD GO",
not necessarily the way we as parents may mistakenly think they
ought to go in terms of temperament,gift/skill mix, personality,
    individual potential,etc.

Excellent reading, hard to put down, and immediately applicable.
Ideal as a gift for anyone with kids who wants to help them
develop their fullest potential and be all that God lovingly,
individually, uniquely, wonderfully created them to be and BECOME!

    Book Description

What does a typical three-year-old feel and think about? What can you anticipate from your six-year-old as he begins school, or if there is a death in the family? How will your ten-year-old respond to the news that her parents are divorcing? What does it mean that your eight-year-old seems to lie regularly?

By describing the developmental milestones of childhood, discussing specific questions and concerns and examining more troublesome problems, this invaluable book is designed to provide guidance for your day-to-day interactions with your child. It covers a range of practical issues, from choosing your baby's doctor to dealing with sleep problems, from bolstering a child's self-esteem to helping a child manage school difficulties, from selecting age-appropriate toys to helping your child cope with divorce, death, or other circumstances disrupting family life.

Your Child also moves beyond the day-to-day quandaries and concerns to those that represent more serious obstacles to a child's development and family life. The latter sections of the book provide extensive discussion of the developmental problems that usually require professional intervention, including emotional disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, persistent sleep difficulties, and psychotic disorders. The information provided in these sections will help you to recognize and understand these serious disorders and offers practical advice and useful information to guide you through the who, where, when, and why of getting help for your child.

Written by members of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the leading national association of physicians dedicated to the healthy mental development of children and adolescents, Your Child is the only reference to offer comprehensive and accessible information for parents on the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive development of children from infancy through the preadolescent years. No other book offers such thorough information on:

Understanding your child's developmental achievements in the day-to-day challenges of growing up

Determining when your child's behavior is normal and when it's a signal for professional help

Getting help for your child--including practical and reassuring advice on the many aspects of mental health treatment and the professions involved

1 out of 5 stars Devoid of depth or even much substance.......2000-10-23

The only type of person to whom I could possibly recommend this book is someone with no experience with children and who wants a "forest" level view of them from one source. There is nothing in this book for a parent in the thick of childrearing. Although they are completely out of date with respect to political correctness and product availability, the series from the Gesell Institute (Your One Year Old, Your Two Year Old, etc. etc.) provides immensely better insight into what is going on with children at particular ages and stages. "Raising Your Spirited Child" is a much better place to start looking for advice getting along with a difficult child or even an average difficulty child. I am saddened and more than a bit annoyed (I purchased the book on the basis of the organization's recommendation) that the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry would put its imprimatur on a book containing such little insight.

    5 out of 5 stars Your Child.......2000-03-08

Your Child is one of the best books I have ever picked up to read! My toddler and I were experiencing some difficulties at home, which is why I purchased the book. After reading this wonderful map through childhood, I believe we are both going to be just fine. It gives hope to parents that we really are doing a good job at raising our kids in todays world. And if we aren't, it gives great advise on how to seek help. This isn't your typical "self-help" book!

    5 out of 5 stars A terrific book!.......1998-12-11

I was very impressed by this book, and found its focus on child development fascinating. I was especially pleased to see this book avoid the trap of preaching to caregivers or espousing any specific how-to gimmicks. Instead, this book offers reasonable advice and a somewhat relaxed take on parenting, which I find quite welcome.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific book that covers all the bases........1998-10-25

I HIGHLY recommend this book. As a parent of three grown children and a new grandmother, I certainly thought I had read everything on this subject-- I practically raised my kids with my Dr. Spock in hand. But I decided to buy this new book for my daughter because it covers more than just runny noses and fevers. It's the only book I've found that gets you right inside your kids' heads and shows you what they're thinking about, and why they do what they do, at every age. Wish it had come out when my kids were young.

5 out of 5 stars When your Child Struggles - The Myths of 20/20 Vision.......2001-03-05

I was referred to Behavioral Optometrist by another mother who's son was having difficulty reading. The eye doctor tested my kids and gave me this book to read which clearly defines the seven aspects of vision. Each aspect directly relates to what we see or don't see, how we see it and how it affects our comprehension of the 3-D world, language, and reading. It clearly defines behavioral signs that indicate vision difficluties. Both my sons were found to have problems with 2 or 3 aspects of vision. We caught it early when it can be remedied. This book is highly valuable for every parent.

5 out of 5 stars VISION EXPLAINED IN LAYMAN'S TERMS.......2000-10-10

Those of us who do not have difficulties with sight can not appreciate the complexities involved in our vision. A person can have 20/20 eyesight, but still have difficulty reading from a book or copying from the blackboard due to eye muscle inefficiencies. This book explains in simple terms how the eyes need to coordinate to avoid stress when reading or working. Many times the child can actually be experiencing double vision, but is unable to verbalize that because he/she doesn't realize it isn't normal. That may be the only way they've ever seen letters.

Whether your child is already going through vision therapy or if you are considering the merits of vision therapy, this book will help you understand what therapy can do for you. I strongly recommend it for any parent who's child is having difficulty reading for unexplained reasons.

5 out of 5 stars Real World Advice and Anecdotes.......2002-06-03

After the surprise announcement by my wife of "I'm pregnant" a couple of weeks ago, I knew I needed to get some accurate info fast. Especially since this was our first and our wife is in the "high risk" catagory. After reading reviews on Amazon, I chose this book and am very happy with my selection.

At work, had I mentioned that my wife was pregnant with our first child and a male co-worker with 3 sons started laughing and giving me advice. His first was that Lamaze was a waste...his wife was in labor and Lamaze coaching lasted for about 2 minutes until she screamed at him, "Stop telling me to breathe and just rub my back!" He then proceeded to tell me several items they had purchased and had only used once or twice.

This book arrived a week later and I brought it to work. The same co-worker grabbed it and said, nothing in this book will tell how it really is like. Then he read an anectdotal story of a wife telling her husband to stop with the Lamaze and just hold her hand. He kept reading and agreed that it gives real world advice and is a great book.

My wife is reading and enjoying it too. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Inspires Confidence! A book for every new dad!.......2000-11-15

If you know anyone who has just found out their wife is pregnant....this is the book they absolutely will need. So many mom's have showers and receive gifts for the baby. Why not include this book for the dad! Not only does this book enlighten fathers, mothers will want to steal this book to refer to all the great sections on baby/toddler development. The charts on page 52 and 66 organize the developmental advances a baby goes through.

The first chart shows everything from how newborns communicate to when you can expect your baby to take their first steps. The Toddler chart spans the time from 15 months to 5 years and discloses when your child will enjoy rhyming games or when they will start to name everyday objects.

Many of the sections in this book are very thoughtful and encourage a dad to consider the child in his life and make this new life a high priority. This book is also filled with humor guys will really relate to.

Through the seven chapters, men will learn what it takes to be a dad, how to be a good prenatal dad, what to expect at the birth, what changes to expect in the first two weeks and then what to look for in the first year and toddler/preschool years. The "Many Faces of Fatherhood" is a modern look at fatherhood. Adoption, divorce, unwed fathers, stepfathers and widowed fathers are also given some great advice.

"The most important thing you can do to ensure your child develops good emotional health is to show your love for him or her. Do this, and your child will feel valued, loved, and respected." --page 68

The last chapter is "For Mom's Eyes Only." It explains the "Myths" of parenting and how to deal with them in a logical way. Mothers and fathers will also love the "10 ways to make time for your children" list on page 13. Turn the page over and you will see why a good marriage is so important to a child. The Index is great for the busy parent who wants to find answers fast. Look up everything from car seats to language skills.

This book gives real world tips from fathers on how to be a positive influence in the life of their child. It guides men through pregnancy and childbirth and has practical advice on how men can help care for an infant. Truly, this is moral support to encourage men to become the best fathers they can be.

I purchased this book to give to my cousin's husband. They are having their first baby in December and I could not think of a better gift to give to a baby! Yes, this is truly a gift for the child. A dad who has this information is going to be one of the most enlightened dad's on the planet! For mothers, look for the New Baby Book, created by Mothers for Mothers. These books present parenting as an exciting journey. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to start reading this book as soon as they start to consider having children. If you just found out your wife is pregnant, or if you are the new mom who is buying this book for your husband, Congratulations! You are going to love this resource.

    4 out of 5 stars Practical.......1999-10-27

Most of the parenting books I've looked at take a lot more text to get across the same amount of content. I liked the friendly, relaxed approach. Most of all, I liked the specific ideas and suggestions for me as a father.

5 out of 5 stars Finally....a helpful book for new fathers........1999-10-11

As a clinical psychologist who works with children and families, and as a father myself, I applaud the authors' encouragement of fathers to actively participate in their children's lives. This book offers a wide variety of practical and useful tips and hints on how fathers can interact with their young children, how they can play a meaningful role in their children's lives, and how they can work together with their wives in day-to-day parenting. I enjoyed the developmental perspective, as the authors discuss fatherhood from the mother's pregnancy through the preschool years. I also appreciated the special chapter, "The Many Faces of Fatherhood", acknowledging fathers in circumstances that are different than those of married, biological fathers. The authors use good humor in their easy-to-understand, commonsense advice throughout the book, and cite research-related information when appropriate. I would highly recommend this easy-to-read book to any new father (and even perhaps to fathers who already have children) and I plan to recommend this book to families that I work with in my private practice.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Horn gives some helpful tips to new fathers........1999-09-23

I like the fact that Dr. Horn discusses the importance of including fathers in the birth, infant care and child raising process. This book will help fathers define themselves and expand traditional roles.
