Excellent Dreamer's Dictionary.......2007-10-11
I have used the original book until it fell apart and now using this one. It has never failed me in giving good predictions on my dreams.
Ready to Switch.......2007-09-09
I've had this book for about ten years and am ready to switch. I kept it for so long because it is conservative and orderly. But it is completely lacking in certain subjects that are not uncommon. Also, because the authors are Brits, a lot of the vocabulary is very unfamiliar. It is also very dissappointing to look up a dream and be told all other factors in the dream must be looked up, but you get NO explanation at all of the subject of your dream. There are a lot of incomplete explanations as well, and no matter how many other factors you look up, it is impossible to piece these meanings together for a full explanation.Frusterating!
horoscopes.......2007-08-08
If you are into horoscopes, then this book is for you. If you think dreams are more about psychological issues that manifest themselves in dreams and you would like to discover the underlying phenomena of these dreams, then you will find the book inadequate from this perspective.
Not a lot of Meanings.......2007-07-31
This book isn't the best type for me it lacked a lot of basic dreams like sexual and things like that, of course if your not one to dream about vulgar things it also had me running around the book to find meanings, I had a dream of watching some one cheat but it had nothing on that, it had nothing on tornado's, another dream I had involved gun shots and I had to look up fights just to find something, if your not good at coming up with other names to explain something I'd suggest another book.
Favorite Dream Book!.......2007-07-05
I love this dream dictionary! It is amazing how this book helps you decode your dreams. Everyone should keep a dream journal and decode their dreams with this Dreamer's Dictionary.

Good Reference for Students.......2007-05-14
This reference is a great resource to support your Psych studies at University. I use it while studying to help me remember the things I am learning. The defs are sometimes clearer than the lecturer or the textbooks. Another reviewer sugggested highlighting words as you learn/reference them. I started doing this and it is fun to see the book fill with colors that show what I am learning. If you are not at school but want to learn Psych just out of general interest, I would suggest a Psych for dummies kind of book over this one. However, if you're a student this book is great.
APA dictionary.......2007-02-24
I am a psych undergrad. If you are studying psych it will be an incredibly valuable tool. Highly recommended. have some fun and mark what you look up with red inkpen. Fills up very quickly.
Best Psychology resource.......2007-01-27
This dictionary is going to be the best resource that I have found. I am aPsychology/ Sociology student and needed something at home that would let me look up concepts that I have forgotten without having dozens of books around the house. This is it! I would and have recommended this book to anyone.
Book Description
This is Dr. Naranjo's full-length work on the "enneagram of personality types," including comparisons with other psychological typing systems, extensive citations of the psychoanalytic literature, a discussion of the origins (etiology) of each type, correspondences with homeopathic constitutional types, and more. A book well known to professional therapists and counselors, used in several post-graduate training programs.

The cream of the crop.......2002-04-12
An absolute standard! Pure therapy! The mirror is there, now you just need to face it.
The Classic Work on the Enneagram of Personality.......1999-08-14
Dr Naranjo has written the most definitive and difficult work on the enneagram of personality to date and anyone who really wants to understand him/herself in a deep way, needs to climb this mountain. The language is quite subtle and full of careful distinctions, and while it lacks insight into subtypes (except on occassion and in the case of the Six), it contains the core of the knowledge about the enneagram as a system of self-understanding and awakening. The good doctor is enigmatic and infuriating at times, but those who hang tough and make the required effort will be well rewarded. The other enneagram books read more easily but lack the deep insight which Naranjo seems to capture. No one should claim to know this rich body of knowledge, much less teach it, without having mastered this book.
Very professional and deep. Good documentation.......1998-08-25
Claudio Naranjo describes very deeply the main characterisics of each type of personality. He makes comparision between different typology theories for example DSM-III, Homeophatic tradition and others. Recomended for all who really want to know the structure and dynamics that interact and the different motivations of each Enneatype. I have started teaching Enneagram at my city (it is not know) and the students have become enthusiasitc about it.
Best + most precise book on the enneagram (for experts only).......1995-12-01
Claudio Naranjo could be called the "mother" of the enneagram of character-types
(with Oscar Ichazo being the "father").
All of the well-known enneagram-teachers today have learned the enneagram either directly
from him or from one of his students or student's students.
Many of the assumptions, Naranjo had made during his first teachings in the 1970's, were
later falsely interpreted as being proven facts, and are now dogmas in the enneagram-movement
(e.g. the notion of heart/stress-movement)
From my point of view this book has the most precise and indepth descriptions of
the nine character-types. Mr. Naranjo does not bother to describe the unimportant aspects
of individual behavior (e.g. the concept of wings, etc.), but goes right to the core of the
neurosis, that is present in every type.
As far as I know, no other author has such a radical view on character, in stating
that character itself is neurosis.
In addition, the book contains valuable information about some of the historical aspects
of the enneagram.
Unfortunatly, Mr. Naranjo did not go into detail, concerning his critism towards the
mainstream enneagram-movement. At least, he mentions his disagreement with the works
of Don Richard Riso, a popular enneagram-author, who claims to have made a lot of
contributions to the systems himself, which could very well turn out to be misunderstandings
of the knowledge.
Summing up, I would say, that this book is a must for anybody, who is truly interested
in the enneagram as a tool for transformation, rather than a tool for playing "typing games".
It is definitely not intended for beginners and the sophisticated language surely requires
a few times of reading.
Book Description
Advice for parents and professionals. Covers death, divorce, illness, and other challenges.
Customer Reviews:
Truly excellent book I keep handy.......2006-11-23
I bought this book initially because I was adopting foster children and I wanted to help them with their loss issues. But then as I read it, I realized it applies to helping any child who has to face significant losses. I wish my brother had this book when he got divorced, maybe he could have understood and helped his children when their schoolwork plummetted and they became depressed. It helps you understand about childhood grief and how to aid the child in coping with it. I have referred to it many times and bought copies for my friends, too.
A Classic.......2003-05-16
This book is often recommended for people adopting older children. However, it is a beautifully written book, and easy to read. It has information on how to help children with all sorts of changes, permanent (like a death), and temporary, like a parent going overseas for the military. The book helps adults understand what is going on for the child, and how to help them better with their sadness, anager and aggression.

Customer Reviews:
Useful and a good start........2007-09-29
I am new to dream interpritation. I decided to learn more about the method of understanding dreams after studying several of the techniquies used by Freud. This book provides a very easy to understand reference for the individual items in dreams. It still requires a small amount of know how to fully interprit dreams but it is a good start. Using this book in accordance with other "dream books" is very useful.
Wonderfully easy!.......2007-08-31
Alphabetical listings are easy to find and offer interpretations that are spot on. Listening to your gut feeling while reading the explanations offer even more insight to the information in dreams. I have used this alot.
great dream reference source.......2007-08-05
A friend recommended this book to me and I have to say that I now recommend it to all my friends. This is a great source for interpreting your own dreams. If you are looking for this sort of reference manual I know you will be pleased with this purchase.
Dee's Review.......2007-03-09
If you are looking for an insightful dream dictionary that contains relevant and current day meanings then this is your book! I was really happy with this purchase and would highly recommend this to anyone. Enjoy.
Insightful.......2007-01-24
This is the most comprehensive dictionary of dream symbols that I have found....and I've looked through many books on dream symbology. After cross referencing some of the symbols with other books on the subject, in my opinion Mary Summer Rain offers the most intuitive interpretation of dream symbols. I always keep this book at the ready when awakening from the dream state in order to better understand not only the subconscious but also to guide me in the awakened state.
Amazon.com
A field of 216 contributors filled this tome with savory items from Abacus to Zeno of Elea. In between there are 819 pages of 1001 entries, all in some way expanding our understanding of psychology, philosophy and the physiology of the brain. Like all excellent references, you could easily, happily get lost perusing, but it also happens to be excellently well indexed. Been wondering about the hippocampus or Thomas Hobbes, introversion or tautologies? Wonder no more, or at least wonder with more acumen.
Book Description
The Oxford Companion to the Mind, edited by Richard L. Gregory, is a classic. Published in 1987, to huge acclaim, it immediately took its place as the indispensable guide to the mysteries - and idiosyncracies - of the human mind. In no other book can the reader find indiscussions of concepts such as language, memory, and intelligence, side by side with witty definitions of common human experiences such as the 'cocktail-party' and 'halo' effects, and the least effort principle. Richard Gregory again brings his wit, wisdom, and expertise to bear on this most elusive of subjects. Research into the mind and brain has moved on in bounds in recent years, and interest in the subject has never been so high. There has been a shift in focus away from Freud's concept of the unconscious onto consciousness itself. The new edition of the Companion includes three 'mini symposia' - on consciousness, brain scanning, and artificial intelligence - with contributions from a number of specialists, and encompassing a range of approaches.
Customer Reviews:
The Oxford Companion to The Mind.......2005-08-21
I am slowly moving through this tome, enjoying every moment spent there. This text, now in 2nd edition (2004), is an excellent overview of many psychological aspects of the human mind. It is clearly written. Articles pertaining to scientific studies of the mind, and psychology of human behavior, are thoroughly researched; helpful bibliographies provide a stimulus to "dig deeper." This book deserves a place next to other psych-related texts in your personal library.
Outstanding Reference! Just About Perfect!.......2005-01-25
This 800-page classic reference, on a difficult and hugely multi-faceted subject, appears to cover just about every possible area in this huge category! Not only is it a stupendous browser, but one can practically read it from start to finish without getting too difficult or scientific, for an interested amateur like myself. And there are drawings, diagrams ,sketches covering children's art, illusions, on and on. Plus short bios of the greats (like Newton,Hegel,Rosseau, Sartre, Kant,,etc, etc),plus many lessor known ,but perhaps of equal distinction..Subjects like religion, magic, medicine, out of body experiences, hallucinations, are given active note, not to mention some less known, but still interesting subjects. So if you have a chance, pick this one up. It's also guaranteed to initiate an interest in lots of things you may know absolutely nothing about beforehand! Definitely one of those desert island books that will never go out of style!
Be Amazed.......2004-10-31
Richard Gregory arguably knows more about the human brain than any man alive. This second edition of the Oxford Companion to the Mind has over 200 contributors, over a thousand entries and a million words and in it is much that is new since the first edition (1987.) Out goes Freud (well, not quite; he is still there, but much more strictly edited; ditto Jung et al.) and in comes a huge amount of new and riveting brain research. This is still a philosophical and historical as well as a scientific work of immense learning that will divert and entertain as well as explain: it will expand your mind and change the physical interconnections of your brain. There are short pithy entries, sometimes delightfully quirky, often witty; there are longer, more complex contributions on a myriad of wide-ranging subjects, sometimes technical but always understandable, accessible even for the non-scientist reader. It ranges from mirror cells, face recognition, and drama to how we see art; from Aristotle to puzzles; from the hippocampus to shellshock. It covers language, memory, imagination and intelligence: are all clearly explained. There are three mini-symposia on consciousness, brain imaging and artificial intelligence. This is not just a dazzling reference book but also a diverting bed-side book for artist and scientist alike.
some entries good some bad.......2002-01-26
The whole discussion of psychiatric concepts like depression, autism, or schizofrenia is limited to listing of symptoms and research results on whether they are purely physiologically determined etc..if this is the state of psychiatric understanding of human mind and its illnesses today, then its probably true that were living in very oppressive societies.. otherwise entries on psychological issues like intelligence or visual perception give good introductions to the state of current research.. can be of some help as a general referance work but dont expect any serious illuminations..
Very thorough and still timely.......1999-12-27
This one-volume reference book deals, after all, with a subject that is constantly subject to change. Who knows how many new neurological discoveries may make some statement or another within these pages moot tomorrow, or may have done so already in the decade and more since its publication?
Despite such concerns, this book holds up well. I'd like to praise in particular a brief but pointed discussion of the work of the French philosopher Maine de Biran (1766-1824), written by F.C.T. Moore. De Biran explained that my intention to raise my arm is never an "object" to be grasped by an "inner sense" -- it is, rather, a fact or a relation, the connection of the active self with the arm.
This was an important break with earlier thought, and a step toward Jamesian pragmatism on the one hand, continental phenomenology on the other.

The best book ever taken out of print.......2000-03-20
I started reading this book as a daily devotional it was so good. The book is comprehensive, real, and extremely well-written. Minirth and Meier are amazing intelectuals who have created an amazing piece of work. Highly recommended!

I wish I could give it 10 stars..........2007-09-05
This was an elective text for me in a course I took...Frankly I picked it because it was shorter than some others haha! It has become one of the top 3 or 4 most influential books in my life/faith.
I almost dreaded opening what I thought would be a big list of symbols and explanations...blah, blah blah. There is a vast resource of symbols and their meanings in the last half of the book and every time I looked for something, it was there.
But what really fascinated me was the first half of the book. The insights and learnings of the author were very interesting and have greatly influenced my perspective on some things. I don't want to spoil it, but this one is a keeper and has a very special place on my bookshelf. I also recommend it to everyone I can.
The Dream BOok.......2007-03-17
This book is good as a handbook and enough to get you started with analyzing your dreams. Easy to reference a symbol, get the general meaning of it, then put it in context of your own personal dream to help make sense of it. Basically, the book is a good start, but not very much information on the process of disecting your dreams.
Probably the easiest and most powerful of all the dream books I've looked at!.......2006-08-09
I studied with Betty for years...
(and even had the priveledge of being called up on stage to teach her meditation at one workshop ... when I was much younger, and knew everything... an honor I'll always treasure.)
Welp, when you study with someone brilliant enough to make so many deep concepts transparent and easy to see... the young and stupid among us (yup, me) HAVE to go check out the more difficult routes.
That said, I've looked into, consulted, worked with, Gaggles of other dream books ... and always end up orbiting back to this one. period.
The construction of a dream that she teaches;
the use of your dreams;
and the use of them as insights for opening your own awareness. For stepping into a working awareness of both your own particular inner workings and your spirit's messages for you ... these simple (but not easy) tools, just simply fit.
It makes me think of Hawkings, how he has such a brilliant grasp of his physics, to be able to translate things that have been difficult for physisists to grasp ... into concepts and language that speaks to even the non-math public... Betty's grasp of the insights available in "Dream, Prayer and Meditation, that's all you need" is sweet and so clear as to feel simple.
I will agree with some of the other reviews ... if you're looking for a dictionary to "tell" you what the symbols "mean" ... for some sort of parlor entertainment or just to have a "western world psychologically approved version of the sparks of random thoughts that trigger mind-movies in the night"... pick a different book. Find one that brags the biggest number of "symbols" inside. You'll be happy and undisturbed. However, if you're actually curious about learning what messages your dreams may be offering... you're home ... here.
I've beaten the heck out of 1/2 a dozen copies of the book, in all its different iterations ... and this, the final edit, is the sweetest and best of the bunch.
Love to you, Betty ...
(oh... and Hey! I know you're lookin' out, time to time, from sking in your own Hawaiian paradise .. just wanted to say...
thanks. )
The best dream interpretation book available........2006-07-31
"There are no bad dreams, just bad interpretations." Betty Bethards takes that approach to interpreting dreams. Dreams are our knowing place. Not to be feared, but to direct us. I love her approach. I have purchased this book at least 5 times for friends and family. They all love it too.
A good introduction to the meaning of dreams.......2006-02-24
Simply written, this book is a valuable tool for starting to understand your dreams and use them to gain insight into yourself as well as what may be bothering you.
Book Description

Good Foundation Tool.......2006-06-25
I would recommend purchasing this book early into your program of studies. I bought mine late into my second year of grad school in order to assist in preparation for the NCE and found it would have been more useful if purchased in undergrad or before starting my master's program. Many of the terms include the theorists they are associated with, and some even refer to specific agencies and/or websites to contact for more related info. You will also find a few diagrams explaining items such as; graphs, genograms, sociograms, etc. This book doesn't go in great depth with most items but serves as a very practical foundation on which to build.
Book Description
The definitive guide to psychoanalytic vocabulary. An indispensible reference book for anyone interested in psychoanalysis.
Sigmund Freud evolved his theories throughout his lifetime. This entailed many revisions and changes which he himself never tried to standardize rigidly into a definitive conceptual system. The need for some sort of a reliable guide which would spell out both the pattern of the evolution of Freud's thinking, as well as establish its inherent logic, was felt for a long time by both scholars and students of psychoanalysis. Drs. Laplanche and Pontalis of the Association Psychoanalytique de France succeeded admirably in providing a dictionary of Freud's concepts which is more than a compilation of mere definitions. After many years of creative and industrious research, they were able to give an authentic account of the evolution of each concept with pertinent supporting texts from Freud's own writing (in the Standard Edition translation), and thus have endowed us with an instrument for work and research which is characterized by its thoroughness, exactitude and lack of prejudice towards dogma.
The Language of Psychoanalysis has already established itself as a classic and will long continue to be of invaluable use to both student and research-worker in psychoanalysis.
Customer Reviews:
An Absolute must have for any student of the mind........1998-11-14
This dictionary style work is absolutely vital for any student of psychoanalysis, amateur or aspiring professional. From the armchair to the doctor's office, this book makes the intricacies of psychoanalytic terminology accessible in everyday language. Got a big psych test coming up? Don't know where to begin on what "object-cathexis" or "secondary Narcissism" could possibly mean? What to woo that special someone with your knowledge of "jouissance"? Go to the source. If that makes little or no sense, come here. (So to speak.)
