Book Description

Eliminate Chaos is a user-friendly system for organizing each room of the house, including the kitchen and pantry, closet, garage, home office, and childrens' rooms. The author’s ten-step system is presented in an easy-to-use, workbook-style layout. Full-color photos demonstrate the various stages of the organizing process, illustrating not just "before and after," but the realistic, messy, all-important steps in between. Leist’s method is based on the underlying principle that “it’s not about the stuff.” She touches on the psychological reasons behind clutter and not letting go — such as procrastination, denial, thrift, and family history — but her underlying premise is that being organized is an on-going process, not a one-day event. By learning to sort, prioritize, and make fast, rational decisions about their household goods, readers become more efficient and functional not just at home, but in other areas of life as well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book because of its simplicity and clarity.......2007-09-27

I also ordered other similar books (more dense and more expensive), but found them to be demotivating because of the effort required. I read a couple of chapters from "Eliminatig Chaos" in an hour, and immediately it clicked in my mind. The next day I spent organizing the kids' room and the home office (after a trip to Ikea). There are plenty of pictures to illustrate the ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Don't pass this by !!.......2007-09-20

Very practical ideas to organize every room in your home. The before and after pictures were ideal. The author also addresses the need to have so much "stuff" and how to conquer it. An inspiring book!

5 out of 5 stars great steps on the reality of how to get organized.......2007-02-24

This is a great book, one of the better ones that outlines the CONCISE steps of organizing each part of the house. Because the book is short, you don't get bored. The STEPS she explain are critical because you'll see that most of your time should be spent weeding out things, figuring out what belongs in the room, and little time is spent BUYING organizational tools. Most people just immediately run out to BUY organizational tools thinking that'll do the magic, but this book really shows you that this is the last step, not the first. Also, her stories about her clients are fun to read.

Now, when I watch talk shows on 'closet makeovers', I laugh when I see them 'look' at someone's closet and immediately 'install' a customized system BEFORE they do the weeding out and counting of items!!! What's the point of 'customizing' before you know what you really will be keeping?

I wish there were MORE before and after photos. The photos in the book were tiny and hard to see, and very few.

I also wish she would show pics of more org. tools.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-02-12

My daughter-in-law lives in chaos and clutter so was looking for a good common sense-book to help. This one is great, can apply for anyone no matter the size of the home. Lots of good common sense ideas to clean-up the mess, get rid of "stuff", declutter and reorganize with minimal stress.

4 out of 5 stars Good help for clutter.......2007-01-26

Easy to read, easy to follow guide. I looked at several books on this subject in a bookstore before I chose this one for its straightforwardness and ease of reading. It has great before-and-after pictures from projects from REAL people with REAL issues. Every area of the home is covered. Great.

5 out of 5 stars This book tells it all..........2005-10-25

I bought this book for my young bachelor son; but after going through it, I am going to keep it and buy him another one. It is up to date on cleaning products, and tells you about so many things that most other books of this type don't tell you; such as, diagrams on how to iron, how to sew. It tells you when fruits and vegetables are in season and how to tell when they are ripe. I think it is the most complete book of it's kind that I have ever seen. It would be excellent for newly weds, bachelor sons or daughters just getting their 1st apartment. And it is great for someone that has been housekeeping for over 30 years...like me!! Buy it, you won't regret it!

Book Description

Not simply a storage unit or holding space for cars, the garage is reconceived in this innovative design book as a "flex" space for family members that can be clean, organized, and functional (and still house cars). Wall organizers, garage cabinets, and an ergonomically designed workbench are among the suggestions described and illustrated through a case study of how one family reinvented their garage from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Creative ideas for making the garage into a multipurpose room include placing a television on a wall swivel and moving the treadmill into the garage to create a family gym. Feng shui tips, an overview of garage-design trends over the past 100 years, and speculations about how garages will look in the year 2020 provide a revealing perspective on the importance of transforming the dark, dingy cavern in American homes into a bright, desirable living space.

5 out of 5 stars Take back your garage.......2007-03-27

Like any other home improvement project, and garage organizing is definitely a value added home improvement, you want to do your research first. The last thing you want to do is finish a project and THEN have a bunch of "what if I...", or "I should have...". You want to get it done right the first time and be done with it. This book goes from start to finish, from the history and construction of the garage, to the organized functional garage we all wish we had. If you're planning a garage makeover, find a reputable company to do it, and read this book, as it has ideas for everyone. Definitely worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Garage Organizing for Everyone.......2007-01-21

I first heard about Bill West and The Garagenous Zone in Men's Health magazine. I was intrigued so I bought the book. The idea that we tend to use our garage as a landfill really hit home with me as I have a two-car garage and barely had room for a bicycle, let alone a car. Having been inspired by this book, I have spent the last month, in my spare time, working on the problem. I am proud to say I now have my wife's van back in the garage AND I have my workbench back. I am so motivated I am actually considering an epoxy floor finish next. I recommend this book highly for anyone looking for motivation and ideas for organizing their garage.

2 out of 5 stars Garage finishing catalog with editorial........2007-01-11

This book is pretty much a catolog of various garage finishing resources. Some additional information is given, but you'll get just as much out of this book as a free Griot's Garage catalog. The text in this book was fairly unbiased, though.

5 out of 5 stars Tackling the Garage Clean Up.......2006-11-12

I discovered this book from a review in the Orlando Sentinel. At last, an organizing book just for the garage. The paper pointed out an amazing statistic: Only 15 % of homes with two-car or larger garages actually use them for storing the car. That tells quite a bit about how Americans overload their garages.
Moving to an area where homes don't have basements, it was essential for us to make the most of our garage space. I appreciate the tips and the array of fancy organizing systems shown in the book. We ended up putting in some shelves hanging from the rafters, plus open steel shelving for more convenient access. Maybe not as picture perfect as some shown, but works for us.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Odd.......2006-09-05

This book has some very useful information, but comes across as a bit strange. A whole chapter on Feng Shui? This guy is the Tom Cruise of clutter. Just when you think he's a normal guy and you can identify with him he starts jumping up and down on a couch.

The book is of high quality, but you pay for it. Not recommended unless you are an absolute garage freak.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! .......2007-07-15

I enjoyed reading this book because I felt it was the first organizing book in which the other thinks the way I do. It was a refreshing change from othe organizing books. The topics were clear and the suggestions were practical. It is also unique in the use of images showing products out on the market that are mentioned in the book. I was happy to see things covered that I hoped I would find in a book on garages and was intriqued by others I didn't know about.

5 out of 5 stars Great book .......2007-03-23

I have read a lot of books regarding garages and this so far is the best one on step-by-step how to do it. The author has experience and knowledge and ability to put it in an easy to read book.
The basis for organizing can also apply to closets and other things.
Book is in a format that allows you to read only what applies to you.
I highly recommend this book for someone starting on this seemingly overwhelming task

5 out of 5 stars A gift........2006-11-16

I purchased this book as a gift for my husband. It is a good information book. I am very pleased with it.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know.......2006-09-04

Barry's book covers all the bases. He starts out by helping set a goal, create a plan, and envision the finished project. Then using small steps and understanding humor he guides the reader through the important basics of the organizing process as it applies to storage areas. From there Barry opens the world of storage options. Do you hang it, put it on a shelf, in a cabinet, or a drawer? He has pictures galore of different products and tricks you can devise yourself.

These suggestions are invaluable for someone who needs to know what he or she has to choose from. And he addresses how you can use what you already have for storage, the cost of what you will need, and having a garage sale.

Some of the best chapters are the extra ones about storage in sheds, attics, and basements. He even throws in a chapter on storage of seasonal and holiday items.

Barry has left no stone unturned. If you need to organize your garage, you have what you need here.

This book is full of tips, shortcuts, and handy tidbits YOU can and will use to finallly clean up your messy garage. It is well grouped.

5 out of 5 stars Moving Help...even for "experienced" military spouse movers!.......2007-07-17

It's funny how civilians always seem to think that if you are in the military or married to the military, you are naturally organized. Ha! They also think that after you have a few moves under your belt you have it all figured out. Ha! If that were true we wouldn't all have these boxes we keep moving, don't unpack, never make decisions about. I read this book just prior to our 20th move and learned a number of things I hadn't known before (or simply never thought of.) Sandee's book would have also saved us some big furniture purchase mistakes (i.e. that bed headboard that never fit into any bedroom or up the stairs to the bedroom). Read this book and reread it prior to each move!! Kathie Hightower, coauthor of Help! I'm a Military Spouse...I Get a Life Too!

5 out of 5 stars An FM for all Household 6's.......2006-08-12

We military wives really needed a book like this. A friend of mine has this book and at first glance I knew that I had to have a copy of mine own. Every move that we make, in support of our husband's career, is a new decorating adventure. I myself truly enjoy this - I say this as I am sitting among lots of boxes and am unpacking for the second time in a year. We have a couple of rubbermaid totes full of curtains, organizers and stuff that we may not need in one house but need in the next - so we hang on to it in anticipation of the next move. Thank you Mrs. Payne for your dedication to your husband and nation as a military wife and also for your book that helps other military wives make a house a home, where ever the Armed Forces thinks that needs to be, for their soldier and their children.

Finally someone has taken the time to take the guess work out of PCSing. That Military House is full of great tips to prepare and organize for a PCS move. Then, That Military House gets you ready for the dauntless job of unpacking and making a house a home. Also this book provides organization, implementation, and following up techniques that are specific to a military family move; the book provides tips and guidelines for basic home decoration on a military budget. Thank God for this book.

5 out of 5 stars Superb overview of the essentials of organizing.......2007-06-21

This is a terrific introduction to an important topic that affects everyone.

How do you best make decisions about spending your time and planning your life?

The implications are important and require more than a quick read to absorb.

1 out of 5 stars Companion Website Cost a Secret.......2007-06-16

I was very interested in the campanion website for this book advertised on Amazon. However, it does not list the cost of the website service. It asks for your credit card, but doesn't tell you how much. I consider that unethical business practices and therefore cannot recommend this book or service to anyone. Be cautious, be very cautious of authors engaging in that type of service practices.

UPDATE - I need to update my comments above to let you know that I have received good coorespondance from the company regarding my concerns. They tell me the cost for the service is on the payment page and that it is approximately $15 per month.

3 out of 5 stars The Earth Didn't Move.......2007-01-29

I wanted to give this book 2 stars, but that seemed mean. It's okay. Nothing earth-shattering, not much I hadn't either thought of doing or had done. Much of it seems common sense, such as if you don't bake often, store bakeware on the bottom of other pans or up on high shelves where you don't need to get to it often. This book might serve as a nice primer to the iniatiated, but I imagine that most seasonsed wives and mothers have thought of this stuff. Of course sometimes we get so busy, we forget what we know. :) Finding time to do it now that's another story. (Look at Proscrastination: Why you do it and what to do about it.) I wasn't blown away by this book. Perhaps because so much comes down to common sense. At least to my obsessive compulsive little self. Had I seen this in the bookstore, I would have seen that I didn't need it. However, it sounded good online and I was looking for help and trying to find it in a book. This might make a great fun shower gift or for recent grad. A nice book to have as reference, I guess. Stuff you could figure out for yourself, but all in a concise place. Then, of course, I guess there are "real pigs" out there to whom this stuff really isn't second nature. Yep, I just thought of one, and I am going to send this as a gift. Bet you know one, too. So buy it and if you don't end up needing it, send it to them, with a note explaining that it is helping you organize, including your books, and you're passing on the ones you're finished with. :)

1 out of 5 stars More Like A Checklist For Already Organized.......2006-07-14

I've been an on-again off-again organized person to complete slob, depending on my life at the moment! Sometimes I just need a guide for getting back on track & purging messes until the house is running smoothly again. This book is made for already organized people to get ultra-organized. It has no heart or soul, just a dull, dry list of reminders. There's also little in the way of staying organized, unless you go back to each list on a daily basis. As much as I think Flylady is the opposite end of the spectrum (made for someone who needs reminding to get dressed in the morning), at least she offers the heart & soul that this book lacks.

3 out of 5 stars Restoring Order to Your Home: * Consider Your Needs * Customize Your Space * Organize Your Life (Restoring Order).......2007-08-25

I was disappointed with the frequent references to her previous book for details on organizing. Also the book sells her 'systems'. I read organizing books regularly to stay motivated with keeping up a household of 6, this book didn't give any new ideas and didn't motivate me.
An OK read if you are just starting to read organizing books.
Out of all the books I've read, 'Sink Reflections', is the best and had the most dramatic and lasting effect.

Sink Reflections: Overwhelmed? Disorganized? Living in Chaos? The FlyLady's Simple FLYing Lessons Will Show You How to Get Your Home and Your Life in Order--and It All Starts with Shining Your Sink!

5 out of 5 stars Prioritize Your Organization.......2007-04-04

This room by room guide to organization will help you decide what's most important in your life as you clear away the clutter.

4 out of 5 stars Get ready to get organized!.......2007-04-02

A great room-by-room guide to help you get your home (and life) organized. Vicki shares a lot of practical organizing info and even throws in some design tips.

This is a book you will refer to often!

3 out of 5 stars more info on the website.......2007-02-05

I live in Europe, and found Vicki Norris' website some time ago. I really enjoy the before and after videos you can watch there, as well as several radio interviews. Her way of presenting things is enthusiastic and lively.
I ordered her latest book which is easy to read, but not as thorough as I expected and would have liked. I must say, it's a nice addition to my organizing books collection but it won't actually teach you many new insights. As mentioned in the title of this review, you can get all the information through her website as well. Watch the different videos and listen to the radio interviews, that will give you a good idea of her methods and how to tackle your own house...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A guidebook that really works!.......2002-05-19

I've read more than my share of how-to-get-organized books, but this is the one that works! Emilie Barnes is such a pleasure to read, her sincerity shines through, and her ideas, if you actually follow them, really work. Not everything will necessarily work for every reader, but the basics for an organized home and life are all here. Other books of this type all seem to insist that a reader must do it their way, but Emilie shows how to do it your own way. Reading her book is, as she says, like conferring with a wise friend. It's a treat!

4 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2001-12-31

Emilie Barnes is an easy author to read, with some very creative ideas on how to be organized. Many of the ideas seem a little exessive and silly, but with a little more creativity they can be modified to one's life!

5 out of 5 stars YES from total mess to total rest!!! It works!!!!!!!!.......2001-05-14

This book delivers exactly what it says! A navy wife of 13+ years,10 moves, married to a pack rat and the mother of 2 treasure-saving children this book gave me my sanity back. I highly recommend this book to anyone with even a little bit of chaos in their life.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!.......2000-08-31

This book should be given at every bridal shower... Emilie has done a WONDERFUL job of teaching us how to change our homes to be more organized, productive, relaxed, enjoyable and GODLY! She shows step by step how to get organized, without becoming overwhelmed. Emilie's Christian testimony is an inspiration to any woman... One online review called her "born organized" and that may be true, but that makes her a wonderful authority in showing us the way to total rest! :)

2 out of 5 stars Not useful for a "messie".......2000-01-17

If you are familiar with the usual "messie" terms, I would say Ms. Barnes is "born organized". She talks about how she helped her mother from early on keeping up the house and a business. She apparently was never at a "total mess". If you are completely disorganized and don't know where to start, this book probably will not help you. There are some sections on closets and the kitchen that give you directions on organization.

Book Description

Here is a magnificent looking, full-color guide to the world of Feng Shui in the home.

THE HEALTHY HOUSE BOOK is a practical guide to the skills needed to create a healthy home and lifestyle that supports us both emotionally and physically, as governed by the ancient eastern philosophy of Feng Shui. Complete with 180 beautiful full-color photographs, THE HEALTHY HOUSE BOOK offers practical advice on ways in which we can ensure deep, healing sleep, boost our immune systems, increase our vitality, enhance our enjoyment of life, and protect our children while stimulating their learning ability. All this can be achieved by reducing the levels of harmful chemicals and toxins in our homes, checking surrounding land for electrical wiring, dowsing for geopathic stress, changing our diets, space cleansing, establishing good interior arrangement, and improving the quality of the air we breathe. The first four chapters¾“Putting Your House in Order,” “The Home Detox,” “The Power of Color,” and “Preventative Medicine”¾lead to the final chapter, “Healthy Rooms,” in which all the knowledge and skills taught in the previous chapters are elaborated on and applied to each room in the house.

THE HEALTHY HOUSE BOOK is an invaluable resource for those interested in Feng Shui, parents of young children, or anybody interested in taking more control of their health and well being.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A book on Feng Shui this isn't..........2001-12-19

The subtitle of this book "Using feng shui..." is misleading. I returned my copy.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring book and model to live by..........2001-09-19

This is one of my most favorite books that I reference often. Don't let the title fool you--it's much more than a "healthy house" book. This book is for anyone who wishes to improve their overall health and wellness, but is not sure where to begin. Modern western society, with all of its advancements, has overlooked some of the most important fundamentals for health living, and has taken us away from the natural rythmns of nature that we, as animals, need to survive. This book takes you back to a more simple time, and explains why we need and crave the things we do. It inspires you to reflect on your own needs, happiness and lifestyle.
I found the book to be very enlightening, factually and concisely written and filled with aesthetically therapeutic images. The Health House Book will answer so many questions that you didn't even know that you had!

5 out of 5 stars A design-oriented approach with lavish color photos.......2001-02-06

Healthy House Book adds another Feng Shui home design guide to those on the market already, this taking on an art book style more so than most competitors to illustrate tried and tested methods for creating healing home environments. Also included are healthy eating guidelines and tips on stress reduction, complimenting the design-oriented approach and the lavish color photos of interior examples.
