Family Therapy Techniques.......2005-09-25
Very nice written book. It is full of examples from clinical practice. Easy to read.
Great HOW TO's for working with families.......2000-07-14
Minuchin is a master not only of the art of Family Therapy, but of informative prose as well. Very specific techniques for responding to a range of family dynamics are presented along with relevant theory and poignant vignettes. Though developed in the 1970's, Minuchin's vision for sparking change by "joining" and then working from within families remains powerful and relevant. The techniques in this well written manual resemble those of the modern Narrative Therapy movement, but are presented in a fashion both accessable to the Family Therapy novice and usefull to the seasoned professional.

Book Description
Edgar Cayce left behind a legacy of psychic readings, two-thirds of which dealt with physical illnesses and what might be done to restore the body to health. Throughout his suggestions on ways to correct these conditions, Cayce spoke volumes about diet. He saw certain food combinations as helpful, some as harmful. His theme throughout the readings was keep the body and its functions balancedoften by using nutrition.
This book gives readers a useful and practical source of information regarding what constructive eating is all about. It is written especially for those who are interested in seeking out their life purpose, in maintaining health, and in overcoming illnesses.
Readers will learn the importance of stress, attitudes, emotions, beliefs, habits, prayer, and meditation, and how they affect the use of food by the body and the ultimate effect it has on general health.
The diet you need for full health is as unique as you are. This book will show you how to search creatively for the diet that will suit you best.

edgar cayce on healing foods for the body, mind, and spirit.......2006-08-21
I found this book very inlightning it has improved my system over 50%, it is accurate and safe with all the information it gives the reader, I would recommend it to any one who is serious about healing their body, mind and spirit.
Not what I expected...But still glad I bought it..........2005-12-07
Very informative...the book is full of good advice and excellent information...but...I think the truth of the matter is...I just need my mom to keep cooking for me...I'm just way too lazy to read about it...then cook it...then eat it...argh!!!
This book is for spiritual guidance and NOT for learning facts about nutrition.......2005-10-19
If you are interested in how food fits in with your life's purpose, then this book might be for you. This book suggests that you should "be mindful more not of the body for the body's sake, but of the body that the temple of the living God may be the better channel for manifesting the spritual truths." Many foods are mentioned regarding their inclusion or exclusion in your diet, but you're expected to take it all on faith since the book does not reference any studies, scientific or otherwise. The book also recommends to avoid microwave ovens for cooking but mentions no reason! Conventional ovens are OK. It also suggests you never eat raw apples. Basically, it's a bunch of advice on how to eat and live without any scientific backing. If you want modern advice backed by science, then try something else like Superfoods RX.
Most thorough book on eating the best natural foods ever!.......2001-04-20
This is the most thorough and natural book on eating the best foods for health and healing that I've ever read; and I have read many of them. This is in no way a diet book for weight loss, but a book about eating naturally to prevent or cure whatever is bothering you/your system. It is simple to use--just look up your problem, and you will get a specific food to eat to combat it based on the Edgar Cayce readings(the health readings are well-documented and the cures proven effective as evidenced by the letters written back to Edgar Cayce from thankful and thrilled adults and children who were cured whose evidence can be found in other Cayce material). If you can find this book, buy it immediately. It is an excellent reference book for any library.
Customer Reviews:
An easy to use and understand assessment tool. .......2007-02-13
Kinetic House-Tree-Person Drawings or K-H-T-P by Robert C. Burns of the Seattle Institute of Human Development, is an easy to use and understand interpretative manual for this popular, though still controversial, assessment technique.
Dr. Burn's theory for adding the Kinetic action-to-purpose element to the existing classical model, argues that action in the exercise and symbiosis of the projective components, interplay in creating a dynamic that can yield much more patient information than the standard traditional technique and paradigm.
Dr. Burns demonstrates his point by comparing and contrasting results from several classical model assessments of projective drawings with a kinetic model and interpretation. K-H-T-P is well written and organized providing rich examples of real illustrations for practice and reflection. It is an excellent tool and reference guide for all serious advanced students of psychology and for which assessment will be an important part of their practice.
For the serious student of projective techniques, I would recommend not to focus to much on the illustrations until you have read the concept and assessment techniques provided within and then take a turn at assessment and compare your effort with Dr. Burns final conclusions.
Excellent resource.......2007-01-11
Well presented and an excellent resource for those that utilize this easily administrated and effective assessment.
A good tool.......2004-02-01
I started using art projection when I was a psychologist for a child adolescent unit in a state hospital. A good way to engage angry or depressed children without threat is to ask them to draw something, unless they have poor perceptual motor skills. But getting them to draw will tell you something about that right away. It is important to know what to expect in average drawing skills and this book helps with that. It also gives a place to start with children who have difficulty with verbal expression. This is not the Be All- End All text but it is worthy of being a companion to other art evaluation tools. It is for the subjective anecdotal information to supplement the more objective tools.
It works for me in Special Education: quick emotional test.......2003-07-06
This is not the original I was trained to use but it works as well or better than Goodall's. I use it twice a year and have found the student responses are more in depth for interpretation than their psychoeducational or psychological reports. You can find more quickly where the "hope" level is and put energy into those who are reachable and refer those who aren't. I have collected hundreds of these samples over the years and find most are right on the mark. Of course, it mustn't be used as a diagnostic tool but it works well as a verifier of info.
An unproven laundry list for interpretation.......2001-06-10
For those who want easy answers to deciphering drawings, then this book is a *must read.* But reader beware-- this research is not particularly sound and the original text was written in the early 70's, approximately 30 years ago-- and this book was not significantly updated since then. Hello! Our family values and ideas about family have changed since then, but that is not addressed in this volume. An art therapist worth their salt does not use this type of unreliable assessment to work with clients. I apologize for disagreeing with the last reviewer, but I believe this volume is more of a *must avoid* rather than any type of a classic in the field of art therapy.

Milton Erickson, Where are you now that I need you?.......2007-09-16
Extremely interesting portrait of Milton Erickson highlighted by many case studies that are fascinating. Very informative and enjoyable. For those of you who have an interest in psychology and are tired of reading variations of the same idea, give Dr. Erickson a shot. His methods at times are hilarious, yet effective. Entertaining, informative, enlightening. I hope he takes my insurance.
A Useful Book.......2007-08-14
Uncommon Therapy is a good survey of Dr. Milton Erickson's approach to therapy. The book consists of stories from Erickson's case files along with an explanation of the approach that Erickson took. This book is potentially useful for anyone who has problems and wishes to solve them as the techniques could be applied on a personal level. The people who should be interested in reading this book are the professionals who wish vary their and customize their approach to their patients.
My interest in the book was to find out more about Erickson and his therapeutic techniques that I could apply in my own life. It succeeded in satisfying both my aims. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.
Early Roots Of Cognitive Therapy Still Relevant.......2007-06-20
Uncommon Therapy is an introduction to the therapy work of famed Medical Hypnotist Milton Erickson. It is more readable than many of Erickson's writings. Haley also adds some of his perspective to the art of therapy.
This book and others like it were written before Cognitive Behavioral Therapy became the dominant therapy in Psychology. They can still contribute insights to therapists seeking a broad background for practicing psychotherapy.
Graduate students and therapists in research settings should definitely read this book to help keep alive a more comprehensive approach to cognitive therapy than is promoted by formulaic cognitive and behavioral therapies that were largely forced on Clinicians by insurance companies pushing science-based, effective therapies; a good outcome for most consumers seeking psychotherapy in most settings.
Haley, using a family life cycle approach (e.g. courtship, weaning parents from children, the pain of old age) uses Erickson's case studies to illustrate Erickson's approach. Nowadays it comes across as proof by anecdote. Experienced therapist do however, have examples of cases that were resolved quickly when the client restructured his/her view,
Erickson's approach contibutes best by showing how a therapist can creatively propose an alternative constuction of a problem posed by the client and by inventing strategies for change. Erickson's own writings have many more detailed examples of cases.
Milton Erickson.......2007-02-05
A great reference to techniques of Milton Erickson by someone who spent a great deal of time working with him over the years.
Jay Haley is successful in showing just how amazing this man truly was and the impact he has on modern hypnosis and psychiatric techniques.
Uncommon Therapy: The Psychiatric Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. by .......2007-01-03
Hard to review a book like this, as it is a combination of biography and therapy tecnique. The author is not a Pulitzer Prize journalist but the subject is so intense and fascinating I could not put it down....if you are a therapist or in the healing arts you definately want to read this to see what one man can do, it is an inspiration as well as a text book.....lot of method given too....you can really learn from this book.

Book Description
Licensed psychologist Dr. Dan Montgomery presents the Compass Therapy approach to counseling and therapy which integrates therapeutic psychology with Christian orthodoxy. "The 25 useful therapeutic techniques alone are worth the price of the book," writes Dr. Jim Beck, Chair of the Counseling Division at Denver Seminary.
Customer Reviews:
It is, indeed, Christian counseling that works!.......2007-06-13
As I converted from Islam into Christianity, I have had my own set of issues to deal with. How easy for people to throw in Bible verses right in your face and they think they just "fixed" your pain problem. By leaving Islam, I dealt with rejection as an outcast. I have also had a lot of anger and less trust in people after being betrayed. I have talked to many people of godly counsel, but frankly nobody is like Dan Montgomery. He is not in an ivory tower but he is right down to earth and meets you where you are in a compassionate way showing you how to truly apply the Bible principles in counseling that really"works". I liked a lot what he had to say on feeling God's presence even though when we don't feel like it. I had to read this part in his book over and over again. I even plan to translate to myself in Arabic, my native tongue, and apply it to myself as well as those I evangelize in the Muslim religion. This is "The Lean-Against-the Wall Technique" on pages 115,116,117 and 118. As I have come to explore the American male psyche, this part is the best answer that I can also give in response to the question of why I don't feel like my prayer just hit the wall and I can't feel God. If you read where I have begun all along in my Christian journey and how Dan has helped me, you would really appreciate his book enormously.
Excellent framework for effective therapy.......2007-02-04
This book introduces the reader to the compass model and how to use it to zero in on exactly where a counselee is having problems. The compass theory is easy to understand and to apply in its basic form. Author Dr. Dan Montgomery has developed this technique and shares it with Christian Counselors as an effective counseling tool. Dr. Montgomery is well respected among his peers and has held a license as a Psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist for over twenty-five years. He has taught at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Psychology, the United States International University, and the University of New Mexico. His work and techniques are praised by the likes of the Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Fuller Theological Seminary.
In the book Dr. Montgomery covers the basics of the Compass system, the anatomy of a counseling session, dealing with the counselee's image of God, and using metaphors and symbolization in therapy. Appendix I provides basic commentary on twenty-five specific techniques that provide quality tools to aid the counselor. In the second appendix he even includes some short True/False self-assessment tests to help map out the counselee's position on the compass.
Written for the Christian Counselor these techniques and the compass model can be used not only by clinicians but also by pastors, chaplains, and others involved in this healing ministry. Christian Counseling that Really Works is highly recommended to everyone involved in counseling in any form.
If you really want to change your behavior, this is the book for you.......2006-08-28
Self-help books fill the shelves but very few provide real, lasting help in making real, lasting changes. This book does. It doesn't matter if you read it as a counselor looking for new ideas to assist patients or as a person seeking to make life changes, this book "really works" as the title says. If you're looking for something that will actually make a difference in the way you cope with life situations, difficult people, personal challenges or emotionally stresses, pick this book up today.
If you want personal growth, read this!.......2006-08-06
I'm a licensed professional counselor who has read a hundred plus
books on counseling and therapy over the past twenty years. Dr.
Montgomery's book on Compass Therapy stands head and shoulders above
the rest. The Self Compass growth tool is the easiest way I've found
to understand personality and behavior. The human nature compass
provides many avenues for healing the mind and heart, body and
spirit. And the 25 techniques offer concrete ways to transform pain
or problems into growth toward wholeness. Altogether a brilliant work!
The Self Compass is a powerful growth tool.......2006-06-04
I've never read anything related to psychology or counseling, but a friend gave me this book and I loved it. The author riveted my attention from beginning to end. I could visualize each case study as though the person was right in front of me. Every point was presented in a logical and memorable way. And the Self Compass growth tool gave me valuable information about myself and other people that I immediately used. I predict that this book will become a bestseller!
Customer Reviews:
This is what I was looking for.......2006-09-06
Great book! Explains everything a novice can understand and put to use. Very helpful! Will keep it for reference in the future too.
Area needs more study, but in truth the concept does work.......2005-12-13
Some people will not be convinced that small ceramic magnets can be used for healing, but my experience of over 15 years using such magnets is proof that they can. I have recently been corresponding with a woman in Japan who has severe cartilage inflammation, and cannot use adequate doses of steroid anti-inflammatories because they are immunosuppressive. She has had very good results using small magnets. Her ear cartilage will cease swelling and the redness will start to decline within 10 minutes of application of the magnets.
This would be dismissed as "anecdote" by scoffers. But it is repeatable and reliable.
Believe what you will. Wait until a major scientific study is done, if you must. But magnets are not expensive, and they're safe. Perhaps, with Gary Null's guidance, you will benefit by performing your own experiments. I do not sell magnets, and have no axe to grind. I simply report that they work, for me, and for others.
Magnet therapy is a true science.......2005-05-14
This is a good book on the subject of magnet therapy. I found out about the decades of research done by Albert Roy Davis and Walter C. Rawls by reading this book. After buying magnets from the Albert Roy Davis Research Laboratory, I can tell that I have had great results using their magnets, and so has everyone else I know of who has used them. Davis is the first scientist in the world to discover that magnetism consists of two separate and distinct energies, each having a different effect.
There is information about other worthy researchers as well. Null has a "Clinicians' Reports" chapter, a "Patients' Experiences with Biomagnetic Therapy" chapter, and a "Peer-reviewed Scientific Studies" chapter that summmarizes dozens of successful studies using static magnets and electromagnets for many different health dilemmas. Hospitals already use pulsed magnetic fields to heal broken bones and have for many years.
You'll find many pages on the internet saying that there are few, or no studies at all showing any scientific proof that magnet therapy works. That is about as wrong as wrong can be. The deeper you look, the more obvious this misinformation is. You have to keep in mind the possible reasons for agendas in regards to these statements that completely ignore the facts.
bogus science.......2004-09-07
I am not the author of the review below, taken from a web thread, but I think it is a useful criticism of this book. (BTW, I listen to Gary Null on the radio regularly and find a lot of his ideas useful, so I'm sorry he embraces magnetism quackery. Since people don't contain much ferrous metal, we can't be affected much by magnets.) Now for the review:
In the booklet, under the title, "About magnets and magnetic therapy," Florsheim makes a series of astonishing statements that can certainly get your attention. An unsophisticated reader might very well believe them to be well-founded. These "scientific" statements are taken from a book "Healing with Magnets," by Gary Null, Ph.D. Dr. Null is armed with lawyers and is fond of brandishing them. He endorses the use of magnets and laetrile for curing cancer, he opposes vaccination, recommends coffee enemas, and declares that "misaligned" bony plates of the skull cause a raft of medical problems - all notions that have been shown quite erroneous. The "Consumer's Guide to 'Alternative Medicine'" comments, "Gary Null is wrong so often that the average person who listens to him might be better off believing the opposite of what he says." He obtained his Ph.D. from Union Graduate School, a "non-traditional" organization in New Jersey which allows the student to decide his own title of the degree he earns as well as the content of the program he follows, which is largely self-administered. Null bills himself as, "America's #1 Health Crusader."
It is painfully obvious that the Florsheim people did nothing to check up on the scientific validity of the "facts" they published, which are simply ludicrous. A high school freshman knows better than the executives at Florsheim who passed this material as acceptable. One can only hope that it was ignorance on their part, rather than a planned deception, that led them to publish this simply astonishing document, a 28-page booklet in English, French, and Spanish. In any language, it's quackery.
Here are a few of the howlers featured.
"Magnetism represents one of the most basic powers in the universe. This force keeps order in the galaxy, allowing the stars and planets to spin at significant velocities. The earth itself is a giant magnet, with north and south poles and a hot liquid core. The hot liquid core creates a magnetic field which at the earth's surface is relatively weak, but serves to keep humans attached to the earth. Without this magnetic field, we would spin into outer space."
Magnetism has nothing to do with allowing stars or anything else to spin at a "significant velocity." And there is no magnetic field that keeps us attached to the Earth, which in any case would not work unless you happened to have a large slab of iron fastened to each foot - which I'm sure that Florsheim will next consider producing as yet another scientific innovation. This business of spinning into outer space is just so juvenile and naive that one has to wonder why these booklets didn't burst into flames on the printing press.
"In the latter half of the 1900s, numerous scientific journals reported the effectiveness of using magnetic fields in healing, including programs for the astronauts. 90-95% of health problems astronauts experienced after early space flights were eliminated when magnets were put in space suits and space capsules to counter the effects of traveling outside the earth's magnetic field."
This is a ridiculous statement. It's simply not true. It's a total invention. NASA information officers told us quite plainly that it is a pipe-dream.
"Research indicates that in general, magnetic therapy works because of the electromagnetic nature of the body. Functionally, according to biomagnetic researchers, the brain generates an electromagnetic current that controls every motor and sensory response in our body. Every cell in our body consists of electrically charged particles that are either positive or negative ions. All are directly affected by exposure to external magnetic fields."
Sigh . . . Pardon me, but my brain just about liquified, reading that. The last two sentences are meaningless, wrong, and useless. Particles are not ions. The rest follows.
James Randii is a well-respected researcher, he has presented obvious flaws in Mr. Null's understanding of science. Moving on...
Three More Little Adventures on the Voodoo Science Front. by Robert L. Park, Skeptical Enquirer November 2000
1. Null Hypothesis: Do Astronauts Suffer Magnetic Deficiency?
"I must tell you, I bought a pair of Florsheim MagneForce shoes this week (WN 11 August 00). I have not been sick since. More on my new shoes in a later issue."
Today, I want to share another Gary Null quote from the free brochure Florsheim gave me (at $125 the shoes were not free): "90-95% of health problems astronauts experienced after early space flights were eliminated when magnets were put in space suits and space capsules to counter the effects of traveling outside the earth's magnetic field." That's remarkable, since early flights never got beyond low-Earth orbit where the field is essentially unchanged. Nevertheless, we felt obliged to ask NASA. Answer: There has never been a magnet in a space suit.
And finally: Customers fall short on magnetic attraction by JP Bender, SOUTH FLORIDA BUSINESS JOURNAL 08/03/01:
NASA spokeswoman Eileen Hawley from the Houston-based Johnson Space Center said that claim has circulated since bio-magnets have been sold with claims of healing powers.
"That's untrue," she said. "We don't use magnets in space suits or space crafts. And nobody would have access to the private health information of our astronauts. That information is protected by privacy laws. Anyone who claimed this is making it up."
Dubious Credentials.......2003-11-27
Null says he holds an associate degree in business administration from Mountain State College in West Virginia, a bachelor's degree from Thomas A. Edison State College in New Jersey, and a PhD in human nutrition and public health sciences from The Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. Edison State, a "nontraditional" school with neither campus nor courses, awards accredited bachelor's degrees based on career experience, equivalency exams, and courses taken at other schools.
The Union Institute is also accredited, but its degree requirements and standards for health-related doctoral degrees differ greatly from those of traditional universities. Students design their own program, form and chair their own doctoral committee, and are required to attend only an introductory colloquium and a few interdisciplinary seminars. Null's PhD committee was composed of a "core faculty member," three "adjunct professors," two "peers," and a "second core reader." The "core faculty member" is a well-credentialed academician whose expertise (in geologic sciences) is unrelated to Null's topic. One of the three "adjunct professors" was Martin Feldman, MD, a "complementary" physician (and "clinical ecologist") who has pinch-hit for Null as a radio host and helped develop some of Null's books and supplement formulations. When I asked a school official about the background or location of the other two "adjunct professors," he replied that information was in storage and was too difficult to obtain.
Traditional universities require that research for a doctoral degree in a scientific discipline make a genuine contribution to the scientific literature. Null's thesis, entitled "A Study of Psychological and Physiological Effects of Caffeine on Human Health," contributes nothing. The stated purpose of his project was to evaluate (1) caffeine's effects on "adrenal function determined by a medical examination," (2) "its perceived psychological effects as recorded in a questionnaire and daily diary, and (3) "the anabolic effect of caffeine according to a theory proposed by Dr. E. Revici." (Emanuel Revici, MD, was a physician in New York City whose methods were disparaged by the American Cancer Society. State licensing authorities placed Revici on probation in 1988 and revoked his license in 1993 after concluding that he had violated the terms of his probation.)

Updates from the Masters of Family Mediation.......2004-09-22
This is a very helpful book for me to keep close to my desk. The format let's me turn to the individual authors particular area of expertise, and get an instant, current update in their subject area. The first day I got the book, I used the special applications section in three cases I am currently mediating. In one case I copied a good portion of the chapter on "Mediation in the Shadow of an Affair" and sent it to both sides to give them a better understanding of what was happening to each of them and why. Having various subject areas updated is helpful and efficient for me, otherwise I would have to consult a dozen or more texts to try and get this information. I would never get around to it! The authors (Folberg, Milne and Salem) did a great job using their influence to get the likes of Lang, McKnight, Meiriding, Mosten, Melamed and other acknowleged leaders to contribute.

A sound sample of efficient group therapy.......1999-01-04
A member of a therapy group recounts in her own words her personal quest for freedom from the traumas of sexual abuse. A group of eight women together makes a treacherous journey up through the depths of pain, despair, anger and fear toward newfound self-awareness and inner strength. The book describes a process that requires abuse victims to accept that they have been forever changed as a result of the abuse they endured. Group members are taught to constructively deal with the guilt, the anger, the rage, the fear and the despair stemming from their early experiences, and the majority makes remarkably good progress The described group therapy forms a basis for a further development of the group therapy called "Hope Alive" aimed at treating neglect and its devastating consequences on individuals and on society - not least the dehumanizing effects of abortion. This extremely efficient group therapy is further developed and taught from IIPLCARR (International Institute of Pregnancy Loss & Child Abuse Research and Recovery) iiplcarr@IslandNet.com
