Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Practical ideas that produce results.......2007-07-13

You won't get rich from simply reading a "How to Get Rich" book and you won't get organized and productive from just reading any book - you have to take action and implement the ideas.

I have used the principles and ideas outlined in "Getting Organized" for several years and found them to be extremely valuable.

Becoming more organized and productive is not a matter of what type of filing system or PDA you use, it involves making a habit of organized and productive behavior.

This book provides concrete tools for forming those habits. Simply outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars a nice, integrated system.......2007-07-03

Crouch has some very solid ideas here, with practical applications. Worth looking at.

1 out of 5 stars Look at the reviews carefully.......2007-05-10

I wish I would have looked at the reviews carefully before buying this piece of fluff! I now took the time to look at more than the gold stars and actually read those reviews, and it seems that 99.9% of them were written by people who have paid to have this author give seminars at their offices. I have a feeling they got a discount for each 5 star review they gave.

When you can't handle email or incoming/outgoing paperwork, no book OR seminar is going to help you ... perhaps your career path should begin with a McJob!

If you are looking for REAL organization books that apply to your home and office space, I suggest "Organizing From The Inside Out" and "Sink Reflections".

2 out of 5 stars Will only be helpful for a few........2007-04-14

The book was NOT what I was expecting based on prior reviews. This is NOT a guide to life organizing and prioritizing but rather the author's idea of handling office incoming mail, a filing reminder system for phone calls to be made and work to be done, keeping things one needs to share with another individual in a central location, and scheduling and consolidating that sharing. For those who don't need a computer to do their job, have a memory like a sieve, or are super disorganized and don't know where to begin to start, this might be helpful, otherwise, save your money. His ideas are only practical in a low volume paperwork environment and with those who have non-technical professions. Some kind of portable, daily planner or calendar or a computer syncing PDA is much more practical.

5 out of 5 stars Great Ideas to incorporate in everyday situations.......2007-03-18

Although the book was more concise than expected, I learned some values that I will always use. Recommend this book with its witty content.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource.......2007-10-11

This book was a perfect guide for me when I needed it most. Being diagnosed with a brain tumor has got to be one of the most daunting things a human can be faced with. On top of the shock, you'll quickly realize that the medical community can be a frustrating and inefficient entity to deal with while you're trying to make the most important decisions of your life. This book tells you how to take the bull by the horns and navigate through the murky waters of bureaucratic red tape. I followed the book's advice on keeping a folder with all my medical records and I took it to every appointment. While I was laying on a gurney waiting for an angiogram, a potentially dangerous procedure, I asked why it was taking so long to get started. The doctor said the hospital had misplaced my MRIs. I said that I had a copy on CD in my bag (something Dr. Zeltzer says everyone should do). His eyes popped open wide and he actually used my CD for the procedure. The nurse later told me that no one had ever done that. The book put me in control at a time when decisions like choosing the right doctors were literally a mater of life or death. My benign tumor has been removed for two and a half years and my life is very normal. I will never forget what this book meant to me.

5 out of 5 stars A book of hope.......2006-09-04

This is volume 1 of a two-volume set. Buy them both. Just like the second volume, it is an essential "navigation" guide for patients with one of the deadliest cancers. The book is logically organized, gives all the necessary information and almost nothing is missing. I am brain cancer patient and I recommend this book. This book and a book by Ben Williams, Surviving "Terminal" Cancer should be on the bookshelf of every GBM patient. This book gave me hope and the strength to endure. Mine arrived with Dr. Zeltzer's dedication, "Knowledge is power". How true!

5 out of 5 stars Brain Tumors - a complex diagnoses made simple.......2006-05-06

This is a good book for anyone who needs to understand the complexity and diagnosis of a brain tumor. It will give you the facts to help you or a family member make intelligent decisions when faced with this medical diagnosis. My identical twin brother was diagnosed with a rapid growing tumor that was affecting his vision. We are both software engineers not doctors. We need facts with absolutes. Not probabilities. He was admitted to the University of New Mexico Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery. His wife and 1 year old daughter were at his side waiting for the operation. I found this book at the medical school bookstore. I thumbed through it and could not put it down. The book carefully explained in detail exactly what the medical staff was saying. It was not a solution for the emotions we were going through but at least I understood the complexity of the brain and impact of tumors. He had two major operations, including a craniotomy. Thankfully, he pulled through. That was a year ago. He will be on medicine from the tumor operation for the rest of his life. But he is alive. There are other books I might suggest for the emotional impact on a family, but this review is just for the understanding of the medical diagnosis. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with a brain tumor I suggest this book.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2005-08-14

If you or a loved one are newly diagnosed with a brain tumor, this is the book you must read immediately and use as a reference throughout the process of dealing with the disease. I wish that it had been available when our daughter was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme early last year. With a disease of this complexity, you and your family will ultimately be responsible for coordinating treatment options, anticipating and managing side effects of medications, etc. To be an effective advocate you need to learn as much as you can as quickly as you can, and this book is the place to start. The medical care that our daughter has received has been uniformly excellent, but a vigilent and informed caregiving team is a vital component in managing her disease.

"Surviving Terminal Cancer" by Ben Williams is also excellent -- both books are required reading.

The quality of the information available and the dedication of the people who provide it is truly amazing. Dr Musella's website, www.virtualtrials.com, is another essential resource, particularly for information about the many new developments in brain tumor research and treatment. I believe that there is much reason for optimism, and that an empowered and informed community will play an important role in conquering this terrible disease.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone dealing with a brain tumor.......2004-12-22

This book helps guide you through the turmoil that comes with the diagnosis of a brain tumor. Unlike most diseases where you go to your doctor and let him / her make all of the decisions, dealing with a brain tumor is very different. You will be dealing with up to 20 different types of health professionals. You will be given choices that your doctor doesn't even want to make for you. Decisions that you make can greatly affect your chances of being a long term survivor.
You need all of the help you can get.
This book was written by one of the best neuro-oncologists in the world, drawing not only on his professional experiences dealing with his own patients at some of the most prestigious brain tumor centers in the USA, but also on his many years of participating in online support groups and answering questions from my website, Clinical Trials And Noteworthy Treatments For Brain Tumors.

Book Description

Almost all the organizing books on the market today target the "left-brainer" - people who are generally disciplined, neat, and analytical. But for those who are more creative and spontaneous rather than logical and detail-oriented, help is on the way! In this book, Silber turns traditional organizing advice on its head and offers unique solutions that complement the unorthodox lifestyle of the creative "right-brainer."For example:* Discover how right-brainers can be organized in a left-brain world* Overcome obstacles that stand in the way of being more organized* Pile, don't file - put paper in its place the right-brained way* Learn how being a "pack rat" can be a good thingThis creative new approach to getting it together is perfect for those who can't relate to boring traditional organizing techniques!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful !.......2007-09-23

This is a really helpful book for people who are not naturally the "stack your magazines neatly on the coffee table" - type. I have been getting better at organizing over the years and now that I am homeschooling my kids I really need to lead by example. I feel the author really understands the pitfalls of traditional organizing books and sets out to give practical solutions to right-brained, creative people who don't want to be swallowed by their clutter. Buy it ! You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Being Messy Doesn't Make You a Bad Person.......2006-07-06

Most organizing books can't help implying that clutter and all-around personal messiness is a sign of moral weakness or a character defect. So no matter how well-intentioned the reader is when they start the book, they can't help feeling that there's something wrong with them for needing help organizing themselves in the first place. What's refreshing about this book is that Silber suggests the opposite--that right-brained messy people are more creative, fun and engaged than the uptight left-brained people who usually make them feel so completely inadequate. It's a relief not to be judged and found morally wanting simply for being messy.

Silber's a good-natured writer who comes up with a lot of ingenious ideas for creative people to keep their lives from going out of control; he suggests using lots of post-it notes, putting things on bulletin boards or hanging them on hooks (over the door hooks are the best, in my experience). A lot of his ideas would be great for kids--maybe he could write a book just for them. They would appreciate his sense of humor and nonjudgmental attitude.

3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2006-02-25

This book is fairly practical. The author has to have a hook - organizing for "right brainers." It gets a little old when he is constantly putting down the left brainers for not being creative.

5 out of 5 stars Best Organizing Book For Creative Types.......2005-12-19

This is a fantastic book and interesting read. You will not want to put this down. Finally someone who understands the creative mind and does not try to put a square peg into a round hole. Thank you Lee for being such a positive, upbeat, motivational author and writing real suggestions that are easy to implement in our lives! I liked this book so much I bought 3 of his other books: Time Management, Money Management and Self Promotion. This book is well worth reading and I began implementing organizational suggestions from the book into my life and it has made a huge difference! This is a fast read with creative organizational suggestions you can begin utilizing the day you start reading the book. I have read many organizational books and this is the only one I'd recommend highly!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those looking for a different perspective.......2005-12-13

I'll admit it. I've read practically every title on being more organized and all of them are now sitting on a bookshelf where they'll rest forever without a single idea being implemented. They just didn't make sense to me.

So, of course, I was skeptical when I read a review about this book in one of the many monthly creativity e-newsletters I receive each month. But being the bookhound that I am, I decided to give it a read. And I'm glad I did. Lee Silber has packed this book full of useful tips and tricks for us right-brained folks. He understands that for us, organizing has been about as much as fun as a trip to the dentist. He offers sound advice on piling (no, it's not a dirty word) and filing. He understands our propensity for procrastination and, instead of chiding us for it, offers help to make organizing and staying on top of our responsibilities fun. I'm now in an organizing zone, where I handle each piece of correspondence for my small business in a manner that's natural for me but that gets done. A very liberating feeling indeed to know that I can be myself and still be organized.

If you're a creative-type and want to be more organized in all aspects of your life, this is THE book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Things I never thought to do (or never knew how).......2007-08-07

I just got this book a few days ago, and have been reading it in my spare time, but already I've organized the office, my daughter's closet, and the kitchen cupboards with Kathy Peel's advice. This book not only gives great tips and advice, but gets you motivated to keep a clean, organized and orderly home. I'm only in the 4th or 5th chapter so far, and have gotten so many great ideas for keeping a more smooth-running home. My husband has really enjoyed coming home every day to a more organized, neater home. Our biggest problem is clutter, and she gives great advice for getting rid of clutter and controlling the influx. We have a lot to do yet, but I'm excited to take back our home with Kathy Peel's helpful instructions.

5 out of 5 stars A must for new brides!.......2007-04-10

I have been a housewife for 17 years and I still learned a lot of great time saving tips from this book. This is definately the kind fo book you have to buy, not borrow, so you can hilight and tag pages that jump out at you. It has columns for notes, budgets, etc. This is an absolutely perfect book for a shower gift or anniversary gift for a new bride--I am excited to give a copy to my daughters when they leave home.

5 out of 5 stars not the typical organizing book.......2007-02-11

A lot of organizing books repeat the same old principles. Kathy's book applies an entirely different creed! Family managers become CEOs of the family which gives us a whole different perspective and value system. I highly recommend this book. Even after you get the concept down, there is a lot of information in the book you will want to have on the shelf as a reference.

Organization is a breeze with these great tips. Best of all, they are very easy to implement in your own home.

5 out of 5 stars must read for two wage-earner households.......2007-01-05

Today, with both members of many households working, organization at home is a must if we are to have any leisure time at all to enjoy. Laura's tips for getting things done at home and organizing your life are to the point, practical, and, most importantly, easy to remember and easy to implement. Laura has provided numerous articles for OfficeOurs magazine, all of which have been very popular with our office manager and office worker readers. There is good reason she is in such demand as a speaker and we are looking forward to her keynote presentation at our annual office manager conference and future articles and books.

5 out of 5 stars These books are actually fun to read, and the ideas are easy to implement! .......2006-08-11

I have two of her productivity books, and recently saw her speak. I can only say this- she knows her stuff! Her systems are lifesavers and best of all she lives by the systems she teaches. Her books are the most fun read of any 'organizer'type books I have found (I have shelves of them that I started but never finished because they bored me or made no sense).

Recently I had the opportunity to be at a training where Laura spoke on organization and finding more time, I attended two of her sessions and they were incredible. She has a terrific sense of humor and so many great examples. And unlike those speakers who spend their time selling their merchandise or systems, you really know she is there because she wants to help people enhance their ability to get organized. I highly reccomend her as a speaker for any event you have.

5 out of 5 stars Help for overwhelmed moms and dads.......2006-07-16

This book is a great resource for anyone who is overwhelmed by the stuff of life. I'm a work-at-home mom, but I'm extremely organizationally challenged. Because my "work" and my "home" all involve a multitude of jobs, I'm constantly sidetracked and distracted. I run around a lot, but often have little show for it. I did like "Leave the Office Earlier", but "Find More Time" was really what I was looking for as it covers everything that clogs up my brain and helps me sort it out with easy to follow tasks. I saw myself in the section about how "to-do's" are often "projects" and don't get done because they require too many steps. Now, my challenge is to implement and USE the ideas offered by Laura.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's About DeJunking--NOT About Organizing!.......2007-09-05

I've read this book & a few others that Aslett has written. This is my favorite by far. It is motivational & always makes me want to jump up & dejunk my house. I have a short list of books that are so good that I try to re-read them every year--this book is on that list! If you ever find that you can't easily put things away because your cupboards, drawers or closets are too crowded, or you ever feel like you "should" keep something (gift, belonged to someone dear to you, could be worth something, someone might be able to use it, etc.) then this is the book for you! Don Aslett has a good sense of humor & writes in an easy-to-read manner. It doesn't take a long time or a lot of concentration to read his books, plus you actually want to get up & simplify your life before you've even finished the book! Highly recommend this book for pretty much anyone to read! :-)

3 out of 5 stars Clutter's Last Stand.......2007-07-05

The reviews of this book were so good that I guess I was expecting the definitive book on decluttering. While the author makes me smile, admits he has a tendency to be somewhat of a packrat, and is easily understood, something seems to be missing. I want motivation, but find that I can receive more motivation on various websites on the net. As I declutter my bookshelves, this book will be one that goes in the 'donate' box. Mr. Aslett knows his subject though, and I'm looking forward to receiving his book, Is There Life After Housework? I have high hopes for time-saving tips from that book.

5 out of 5 stars Will Change the Way You Look at Your STUFF.......2007-05-05

All of this man's books are wonderful, but this one is must reading. I kept jumping around this book looking for the quick tips for organizing, but there were none. I finally settled down and read the book from beginning to the end.

It was enjoyable and funny, but most importantly, it changed the way I looked at what I owned. The unexpected side effect was that it changed my buying habits (I stopped buying what I didn't need).

2 out of 5 stars Dumpster Approach.......2007-02-26

I would recommend this book to read from a clutter standpoint but not as a book on dealing with Chronic Disorganization. I found this book," Clutters Last Stand", is not as easy to read as it may appear at first glance. I feel the author has the information presented in choppy portions throughout the book it did not always flow together. Reading this book was similar to reading a newspaper. The authors attitude is to get rid of everything and that is not the approach to have with many clients that have difficult organizing situations. This book is worth reading but not to get information on working with clients with Chronic Disorganization. The author has a get a dumpster approach to everthing and that is not always the best approach and will not work with everyone.

5 out of 5 stars If you need to dejunk this is THE book........2007-01-26

If you have read any books on organization they all say get rid of your clutter. Reading this book is like having a coach to help you. I bought this book in 1984. This is probably the only book that I haven't got rid of. I have read most organizing books and this beats them all and it's not really a book about oranization.

Book Description

The ancient Chinese art of feng shui is becoming increasingly popular in the West. That's because many of feng shui's principles are just common sense. One of the easiest, most popular, and most important feng shui “cures” is clutter control and organization. Several best-sellers have already been written on this topic, but none with the easy time promise this book offers. Patterned after 10-Minute Feng Shui, this book will offer hundreds of ways to use the ancient Chinese art of placement to clear the detritus of a busy life and create a calm, harmonious environment.

4 out of 5 stars It is what it is, where it is.......2006-01-24

I confess: I am a person of clutter. I am not a feng shui* devotee, indeed, this book was my introduction. For me, Jeff Campbell's 'Clutter Control : Putting Your Home on a Diet' is still The Best, but this book has its moments, and is a good refresher for New Year's resolutioners. Sorry, Shui sisters. I haven't got time, money or inclination to build a Bagua octagon of Chez Tundra - so my "missing gua" must remain AWOL. The kitchen is where the kitchen is - not to be confused with my Home Office or the bath. Still, the remaining chapters of Skye's Shui offer inspiration and reinforcement for ever-ongoing vigilance against the accumulation of clutter. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer

* For those as new to the Chinese art of Feng Shui as I, (I live up here in the Tundra,) the author explains: "literally translated, feng shui means wind and water. Wind and water, as we know, can be harnessed to produce energy. Feng shui also allows us to control and direct natural forces and utilize their energy. The principle force fend shui considers the ch'i (pronounced chee), the life-giving energy of the universe that flows through everything - our homes, the Earth, our bodies." So, the convergence for this reviewer is inspiration to shovel more stuff out the door!

5 out of 5 stars Great Advice!.......2005-07-18

Easy to read and makes a nice gift. The Feng Shui way of getting rid of clutter is different from the usual organization books! If you are overwhelmed with clutter, this book is a great motivator. I am taking a huge load to Goodwill tomorrow! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Clutter Control Made Easy.......2005-01-28

Reading this book was my introduction to the Feng Shui philosophy. Most of the book has short paragraphs that will help you reduce clutter immediately. This is a great book for just reading a paragraph or two at a time. Read this book; you'll benefit from it!

5 out of 5 stars Have You Hit A Roadblock with Your Writing?.......2006-06-05

Let's face the facts--the road to publication is long and hard. Even if you've been published in magazines or written books, you can profit from the inspiration and insights woven into the fiber of the pages of this book.

Kristi Holl is a much published, seasoned author who knows how life can interrupt our writing--yet she's found the way around the roadblocks, learned techniques to administer first aid and carry on with her writing.

The contents are organized into four sections:
    1. Getting Started (answers some basic questions with insight about how to increase creativity and why does it take so long?)

    2. Work Habits That Work For You (teaches how to boost productivity with instantly applicable principles and tips)

    3. Money and Other Practical Matters (every writer that I know can apply these lessons)

    4. Create the Writing Life You Want (the insight in this section deepens into areas such as is full-time freelancing for you? or A Call to Excellence.

Keep this book near your computer. You can read it quickly and gain a burst of inspiration for your writing day. I recommend this book for writers of all levels--beginner, intermediate and expert.

2 out of 5 stars Getting bogged down in details........2003-02-02

This book is an overly-detailed, almost academic discussion of organizational theory. Some of the basic organizational principles include listing a project's "processes or system[s] into manageable parts" , breaking down projects into prioritizing projects by how aggravating they are, tackling the #1's first, etc. Her discussion of how to compose and analyze the daily to-do list is overly-detailed -- for example, calling a student's mother to determine why he didn't show up for class yesterday is an immediate task that just cropped up, while getting in touch with an equipment supplier is "a basic, medium range task." What does that mean?? And I don't think most of us struggle with figuring out what is really important and what isn't; what we need is something that will help us accomplish what is most important. The financial planning section is overly detailed -- assess income, analyze fixed expenses, prepare a budget, etc. I'm consulting a Getting Organized book because I need to get motivated and empowered to plow through the pile of clothes on the floor and the pile of papers on my desk -- This book is better-suited for folks who are already organized and want to be even more so. This book might be a good choice if you are already reasonably organized and are looking for detailed discussions of the processes that might enable you to become more organized in all aspects of your life. If you are currently at a lower level of organization, I recommend Don Aslett's books on clutter; for me, they have been much more readable and useful.

4 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life!!.......2002-07-16

I have read many books in my life, many of which I have made the grand statement that my life was altered afterwards. None has had such an impact in such a short period of time. In the beginning of the book, Ms. Winston provides readers with a self-evaluation. My wife and I sat down and did it together, and reluctantly added up our points. We ranked in the "Disorganized to the point of Chaos" category.

But, in the past two weeks or so, we have begun to implement the author's suggestions, many of which boil down to common sense. One reviewer is harsh in his criticism because of dated material, because of her suggestion to use carbon paper to make back-up copies of all correspondence. I, too, was surprised at this anachronism in a newly revised edition, but I forgave her for all of the other great advice. If you too are disorganized "to the point of chaos", BUY THIS BOOK. It may change your life, too.

1 out of 5 stars Badly needs updating........2002-02-22

This book is so outdated as to be laughable. She talks about carbon paper and white-out! Computers are treated as something for technologists. She says Sidekick is the most popular software. In fact it is no longer marketed or supported. Memory typewriters are compared favorably to computers! However, her Two-List Time Plan was worth the price of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Put your Life in Order.......2001-08-07

When I took over the daily operation of a National Guard Armory I wasn't sure what I was getting into. The Armory had a staff of one, Me! I needed to get organized fast! The administrator whom I was replacing had his own system in place. I was fortunate, I was able to work with him before he left for his new assignment. The National Guard runs and thrives on chaos and a crisis management system. Every day there was a new crisis to cope with, mostly the making of the higher headquarters. There was always too much useless work and never enough time to get it accomplished. At least once a day I would get a phone call from higher headquarters about some useless piece of paperwork the just discovered they needed yesterday at the latest and now wanted everybody to jump through hoops! Short and long term planning were never practiced, just given lip-service. Winston's book was a great starting point. It helped me get ahead and stay ahead of the Puzzle Palace Jockeys. There is something here for everyone. If you learn just one new idea and put it to work for you, the price of the book will have been well worth it!

    5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2001-05-30

The author defenitly provided me with fair suggestions to organzie myself better, however, most the suggestion were common things. However, do not compare yourself with me because prior purchasing this book, I still was a great organized person; it's just that I like to be perfect.
