Book Description

Anyone suffering from this traumatic arthritic condition will fully appreciate the new edition of Getting Rid Of Gout. Included in the new sections are updated dietary guidelines, including current research on the role of diet in preventing gout, and a description of the new medications available for its treatment. Bryan Emmerson, a recognised authority on gout, argues that if control of the elevated concentrations of uric acid can be achieved through either diet or medication modifications, gout attacks will cease and there will be no further complications. He goes on to outline how effective prevention of gout requires sufferers to understand their condition, one that can be a result of both genetic and lifestyle factors. Written in an understandable and sympathetic manner with the aid of diagrams and cartoons, Getting Rid of Gout offers sensible advice and dispels the popular fallacies about the nature and causes of gout.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good reference - no magic bullets.......2007-07-09

This book gets fairly technical yet remains accessible to the non-medical specialist. Very comprehensive, good evaluation of the existing alternatives. Plus, enough description of what's understood of the mechanism of gout for you to evaluate new treatments.

Highly recommended for those who want to learn more about how to treat their gout and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative.

3 out of 5 stars Pass The Black Cherry Juice.......2003-01-22

I shouldn't be commenting on this, since I have not read the book. I don't know if I'm repeating information from the book, but as a Gout sufferer, I feel compelled to mention that black cherry juice or concentrate helped relieve the pain in my toe and ankle. Your mileage may vary, but Google it and there seems to be plenty of anecdotal evidence that it works.

5 out of 5 stars One of those great small books. NOT snake oil........2002-07-10

This is an excellent concise but comprehensive book on the gout for the lay reader. It would be better not to have gout, but if you do need to manage it, this is the best book I've seen. The size, title and the photo on the cover gave me the impression that the book was likely to be simplistic and wrong. In fact, it strikes a good balance between readability and detail. It also turns out that Dr Emmerson has published quite a few papers on gout in serious peer reviewed journals.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK - NEW GOUT SUFFERS MUST READ!.......2001-07-06

If you have gout then READ THIS BOOK ASAP - This is the only comprehensive guide to GOUT I could locate. Excellent reference if you want to understand all aspects and possible causes. I ask lots of questions and this book answered 99 percent of my concerns. Buy your doctor one also - I am new to this condition but now have a definitive plan of action to determine the cause and cure it - not just treat the symptoms. DR. Emmerson if you read these THANK YOU! My TOE wishes I would have found this book 9 months ago.

5 out of 5 stars Sound words.......2001-04-03

This complaint has vexed me sorely for a full threemonth. Mr Shoesmith the chirurgeon has procured some foul liquor from a mountebank toothpuller at Bartley fair, which he vouchsafes will rid me of this abhorrent contagion if assiduously applied by means of a poultice. His advice put me in mind of the wise counsel of the Mahomedans "Never take succour from an envious man". I therefore threw myself upon the mercy and good grace of Messrs Emmerson and Emmer. In matters apothecary they are gentlemen of wit and learning, and though their counsel to abstain from port wine was burdensome indeed, follower of Bacchus that I am, I must report an abatement of my pains which will enable me to travel to Europe on the Lisbon packet later this year.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's About Time.......2007-01-31

This book is wonderful. I am very limited to what food I can eat because of the gout. This book has some great recipes in it. Even my kids like the recipes. My gout is now under control with the help of foods that I can eat.

Thank you.

1 out of 5 stars contradicting information from medical journals on food list.......2006-08-07

I was rather disappointed in this book, only to find alot of the foods that they used in the recipes are on the "DO NOT" eat list for those who have gout. How can they even title this 'Gout Haters' cook book? I felt like this was very falsely advertised.

1 out of 5 stars no longer needed.......2006-08-07

I own a previous edition of this book. It is useless. The recipes are mediocre but, more importantly, the science, in the edition I own, is outdated. At one time, gout sufferers were told to avoid most proteins, and this extreme restriction guided the cookbook. Since 2004, a much more nuanced recommendation is possible. Fish/seafood is very high risk, red meat fairly high risk. But vegetable and dairy proteins are beneficial. I control gout by diet, and I do so by using the many excellent vegetarian cookbooks available. They're a lot more interesting than this one!

If you want to see the relevant science, google "gout" and "2004" and "New England Journal of Medicine." If the new edition of this book reflects the recent science, the author should explain how.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Recipes.......2006-01-06

My father has suffered for years from Gout and I bought him a copy of Gout Hater's Cookbook I. He has found the information about Gout including the bibliography to be very helpful and he really enjoys the recipes. My mother finds the recipes easy to follow and agrees they are delicious although she does not suffer from Gout.

The author has this chatty style of writing, a bit disorganzied, if you ask me, but the information is very useful, and I read and re read many parts of the book. I have had frequent flarups of my psoratic arthritis lately, and the advise in the book has lead me to treatments that have helped me onto the road to recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Gout is a form of Arthritis too!!.......2007-02-24

This book is amazing. I followed the plan and my Gout, the constant pain in my legs and tendonitus all went away within a month. I highly recommend this book no matter what form of Arthritus you have. JUST DO IT! It will not only change your life but give you your life back.

5 out of 5 stars How to Eat Away Arthritis .......2007-02-04

I think this is a great book as it has a lot of good information regarding food intolerances that results in Arthritis and Pain, which I suspected certain foods as a contributing factor and then found this book which confirmed it for me. I liked it so much, I bought three copies to give to my ailing Arthritic Brothers.

4 out of 5 stars eat for arthritis.......2007-01-12

My wife started right away to eliminate some of the triggers that were mentioned in the book. She thought it was a quick read and gave good information.

3 out of 5 stars Good contents but not well laid out.......2006-11-25

The book has excellent information on how to eat, how to fast your way to health, etc.

It's just a pity that the author didn't get assistance with the layout of the book. I really struggled my way through it and also struggle to find information that I want to refer back to. The layout needs to be a whole lot more systematic and logical.

In their study of an ailment that has tormented the big toes of some big men--Kant, Samuel Johnson, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson--Porter and Rousseau turn the argument of Susan Sontag in Illness as Metaphor and AIDS and its Metaphors on its head. Sontag thinks disease should be freed of its freight of cultural associations and stigmas.

But disease and metaphor inevitably go hand in hand. This was especially true in the days when gout was mysterious, before Queen Victoria's future physician showed it was caused by uric-acid crystals producing excruciating pain in the extremities. Milton told a friend that if he were only free of gout pain, blindness would be tolerable. The pain felt "as if I was walking on my eyeballs," writes one sufferer. Since one had to be rich to live long enough to get gout, and most victims were males (many of whom drank port laced with gout-intensifying lead), it won a reputation as just punishment for high living, and even a kind of badge of meritocratic honor. It was God's gift to caricaturists like Hogarth, Cruikshank, and Gillray. George Eliot used gout as a symbol for a sick society in Middlemarch. The data fascinates, but the professors don't wear their learning lightly. Still, they do score some good phrases. Explaining that there aren't many portraits of gout sufferers because few victims would pose, they write, "Who wants to be remembered as a septuagenarian freak of Falstaffian glob?" --Tim Appelo

Book Description

Gout has fascinated medical writers and cultural commentators from the time of ancient Greece. Historically seen as a disease afflicting upper-class males of superior wit, genius, and creativity, it has included among its sufferers Erasmus, the Medici, Edward Gibbon, Samuel Johnson, Immanuel Kant, and Robert Browning. Gout has also been the subject of powerful medical folklore, viewed as a disease that protects its sufferers and assures long life. This dazzlingly insightful and readable book investigates the history of gout and through it offers a new perspective on medical and social history, sex, prejudice, and class, and explains why gout was gender specific.

This was a very interesting book from a/an historical perspective. I would have liked more information on the disease pathology from a layperson's view.

4 out of 5 stars A fashionable ailment.......2001-01-09

This is the third review I have written on Socio-medical histories by Roy Porter. I read and reviewed this book, "Gout - the Patrician Malady" at the same time as his more general medical histories "Cambridge Illustrated History: Medicine" - and "The Greatest Benefit to Mankind". I wanted to compare these books with Porter's work on more specific topics. Porter mentions Gout in passing in both his general histories, but I wondered how he would deal with a more specific subject which had the space of an entire book to develop.

He certainly brings the same light writing style to this book as he does to his other subjects and I it made fun reading for what at times could have been very dull and dry.

Porter turns a medical subject into a very interesing social history, he overlays the historical recognition of Gout, its rise in prevalance and treatment, as well as the development of it as a fashionable, upper-class ailment very well. He does this by drawing in the literature and art of the times to track its social progress. Porter certainly shows himself a master of the subject. However, I didn't like the way he sectioned the book. It felt clumsy to me. It is in three parts Histories, Cultures and Goutometries and they seemed to overlap especially the last two sections. Although I did love the chapter on Art in 'Goutometries'. Perhaps the most interesting chapter for me was the in the 'Cultures' section "Indian Summer; Romantic and Victorian Gout" which traced the literary tradition against the actual social status of Gout through the nineteenth century using representations of Gout in Disraeli and Austen to George Eliot. The most amusing thing, I thought, was Gout as a symbol of social status - Gout was for the upper classes, and rather fashionable - and this resulted in many non-gout illnesses being diagnosed as Gout.

At times I found the book rather long - but I rather think that was me rather than the writing. Most of my interest lies in the Georgian period which was really the peak of the Gout popularity. I wish it had been illustrated in colour too. The only illustrations at all were in the Goutometries and those were black reproductions on standard paper. The book probably has limited interest to most people - but for lovers of Georgian period or medical histories I think this is well worth reading.

"Oliver Sacks, Richard Selzer, Lewis Thomas . . . Weissmann is in this noble tradition."- Los Angeles Times

"Weissmann introduces us to a new way of thinking about the connections between art and medicine."- The New York Times Book Review

Embryonic stem cell research. Evolution versus intelligent design. The transformation of medicine into "healthcare." Climate change. Never before has science been so intertwined with politics; never have we been more dependent on scientific solutions for the preservation of the species. As at home with Galileo and his daughter in Florence as he is with Diderot in Enlightenment France, William and Alice James in fin-de-siècle Boston, or the latest research on the genome, Gerald Weissmann distills the lessons of history to guide us through our troubled age. His message is clear: "Experimental science is our defense-perhaps our best defense-against humbug and the Endarkenment."

These reflections on the historical roots of the current culture wars in science and medicine again reveal Weissmann to be "by any standard, one of the major essayists of our time" (Eric Kandel, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2000).

Gerald Weissmann, MD, is a research professor of medicine, editor in chief of The FASEB Journal, and director of the Biotechnology Study Center at New York University School of Medicine. His essays and reviews have appeared in numerous publications worldwide, including the London Review of Books and The New York Times Book Review. He is the author, most recently, of The Year of the Genome (2002). He lives in New York City and Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
