Book Description

A refreshing new "blueprint for motherhood" based on the wisdom of Scripture combined with the expertise of a psychologist and mother of three. No mother has experienced the joys of parenting without also feeling the nagging doubt that she is inadequate for the task of raising her children. With every imperfection and every small failure, guilt is her accuser. Dr. Slattery argues that this guilt is the natural product of a mother's God-given influence over her children-a blessed reminder of her stewardship. While this is a tremendous responsibility, God would not let mothers face it alone. Using the wisdom of the Bible and her own experience as a psychologist and mother, Slattery shows how this guilt can be turned to positive parenting. Mothers are shown how to create a personal "blueprint for motherhood." This is both a broad understanding of their own personal approaches and beliefs and a daily action plan for dealing with common obstacles-from being too busy, to saying the wrong thing, to helping children through the inevitable rough patches in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars A different kind of parenting book.......2006-06-25

I loved this book so much. Actually I caught a clip of Julianna on Focus on the Family and I am so glad that I did, upon hearing her I just knew this was something I'd never heard before. I have tried to read so many advice-type parenting books and as good as they may be, they didn't touch me to the core like this one! This gets to the ROOT of some problems that we face as parents, but lack understanding on how to get from point A to point B. I was really stuck in my parenting life - and truly wondering if I was ever meant to be a parent-(obviously I was), but this book really helped unlock my potential and gave me hope, desire and motivation to get back in there and parent for the Lord. I highly recommend this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Enhanced with questions and a 12-week study guide.......2005-02-03

Parenting Without Guilt: How Mothers Can Break Free From Feelings Of Inadequacy by Christian psychologist, public speaker, wife and mother Julianna Slattery directly addresses the all to common pangs of guilt that plague even the most conscientious mother when it comes to raising children in today's secular values dominated culture -- including the necessity for most mothers to be out of the home earning wages from employment. Julianna Slattery believes that guilt is a natural produce of a mother's God-given influence over her children -- a kind of gentle reminder of her stewardship responsibility over the well-being of her children. Guilt-Free Motherhood offers the whole picture of godly wisdom arising from a significantly different approach to motherhood. With sound experienced-based advice, Julianna Slattery will help mothers to keep their faithfulness and focus on the modern challenges of motherhood, and offers practical, applicable tools for replacing guilt with positive action. Enhanced with questions for personal reflection and a 12-week study guide, Guilt-Free Motherhood is especially recommended to the attention of single mothers, working mothers, mothers of children with a physical or mental handicap, mothers having to cope with the illness or even death of a child, and mothers with concerns for their adult children.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!!.......2005-01-11

Guilt Free Motherhood is not just another book on how to be a good mother. This book is filled with practical information that can be applied at any stage of parenting. Dr. Slattery points the reader to God and scriptures for wisdom. She gently guides mothers through the parenting maze, past the daily squabbles, in order to get greater perspective on their parenting. This book will challenge you as a mother to choose a parenting philosophy that will allow you to raise up children who will grow to be both godly and productive members of society. In a day and age of indulgence and child centered homes this book is desperately needed. It is the book I will give my daughters when they become mothers.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2004-11-02

Dr. Slattery has put into words what many of us feel throughout a day of parenting (doubt, feelings of inadequacy and guilt) and has given practical and helpful ideas to making the task more of a joyful experience and with purpose. I think her emphasis on seeking Biblical wisdom is especially encouraging and inspiring. The book is easy to read and yet is very insighful and gives a depth of understanding to this role we are called to fulfill. I would highly recommend it to moms in any stage of their parenting. It will inspire you!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST read!.......2004-10-28

Wonderful book! I would highly recommend it to all mothers. It is very enjoyable reading and easy to understand. The author highlights the book with stories from both her own everyday experience and the experience of others, which all moms will be able to relate to. The book is based on sound Biblical principals and helps a mom to understand not only the importance of her influence in her child's life, but also gives her the tools to make the most of that influence through her own search for Godly wisdom. It's uplifting message is that we are not perfect, and as mom's we may make mistakes, but with God's help and wisdom, we can still be a very positive influence for good in our child's life. This would make a wonderful gift for Mother's Day, Christmas, birthday or for an expectant mother.

Book Description

Almost every pediatrician will tell a new mother that if she wants to breastfeed, she must commit to it for at least six months--a full year is the traditional, and generally more preferred, duration. Imagine hearing this as a working mother; with just three months' leave, many working mothers may never attempt nursing. Or, if they do nurse, they have to figure out on their own how they can return to work and still maintain a routine feeding schedule for their baby. Unitl now, women facing the triple challenge of balancing motherhood, breastfeeding, and a career have had no reliable nursing reference to turn to for guidance. The Three Month Breastfeeding Plan is exactly the book they need to make the most of those precious months and make a smooth transition back to the workplace. Will Wilkoff, M.D. assures working moms that, contrary to traditional belief, they can provide all the health advantages of breastfeeding in just three months. And the best part is, they won't feel guilty for not doing what they've been told repeatedly is "best" for their baby.

4 out of 5 stars Honest and Realistic!!.......2004-11-04

I wish I would have read this book during my first pregnancy. I listened to a lot of the die hard pro-breast Mom's and felt like a huge failure after breastfeeding did not work out for me the first go 'round. I appreciate that he talks A LOT about how tired you will be and how latching on is not a given for all babies. If I would have heard more of that the first time, I probably could have convinced myself that I was not a failure for not being able to work through the cracked, bloody nipples. As well as-the feedings that were non-stop.My daughter gained 1 pound and 2 ounces the first 3 days we were home from the hospital!! I was not prepared for the energy drain but I KNEW it was working, although mentally it was killing me.

As a second time Mom determined to give BF'ing another shot I consider myself lucky to have stumbled across this book. I appreciate the realistic opinions, instead of the "if you don't Breastfeed, you are a failure and a bad Mother" that I have read in other books.

Thanks Dr Wilkoff-even if you are a man...LMAO

4 out of 5 stars I think this book was really misunderstood.......2003-04-16

I read this book, and I didn't get from it the message that others did at all. I think that the book suggests that many women don't nurse at all because they know their employers will be unsupportive of pumping, and Dr. Wilkoff suggests that nursing for 3 months is better than none. I'm personally a round-the-clock sort of breastfeeding mom and nurse my children into toddlerhood, but I was not offended by this book. I think some of the reviewers of this book were choosing to focus only on the parts of it that they disagreed with. There's a lot of good in this book too: he condemns having formula samples in the house for new mothers as he rightly thinks it sabotages breastfeeding, he thinks nursing until babies start solids would be preferable, and he does indeed offer several suggestions for getting employers to be supportive of pumping. But he also acknowledges the sad reality that some employers will not make it feasible enough for women to nurse.

There's a lot of good in this book for women who want to breastfeed but know from the start that they won't do it long-term. I love the Sears and LLL books personally, but I'm also so strongly a believer in breastfeeding that I think 3 months of breastfeeding is better than none. If Dr. Wilkoff's book encourages some women to nurse for 3 months who otherwise wouldn't have nursed their babies at all, then I think it serves a useful function. I rated it only 4 stars though because I think the book makes nursing sound exhausting and in my experience it isn't. New motherhood is inherently exhausting whether you breastfeed or not.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed It.......2003-04-01

I thought this book was very realistic. I don't feel as though it discouraged me from breastfeeding in the workplace but it did make me feel as though I would not be a failure if I decided not to. Yes, we all know breast is best, and it is best for the first year but it is also our CHOICE! And some breastmilk is better than no breastmilk. If you want to give breastfeeding your best possible shot and you are returning to work, I suggest this book. Don't be swayed by all of the negative reviews here, my guess is that they are mostly from women who feel as though formula is not an option.

This wonderful resource recently received a Gold Parenting Resource Award from the National Parenting Publications Award (NAPPA). Susan K. Perry, PhD wrote the following review: This compendium of ideas guides expectant and new mothers toward balance and a sense of control as they plan for and face the upheavals of new parenthood. A wide rang of issues is covered, and the tone is reassuring, helping both expectant and new moms relax. The tips are practical and specific."

5 out of 5 stars Meaningful Gift to Expectant Mothers.......2001-11-21

A look of skepticism crossed my face as a friend handed me this book to read. Being a new, sleep-deprived, working mom, the last thing I thought I could find was time for a little quiet reading, but once I started flipping the pages I was hooked. Sheryl Gurrentz brings her own wisdom as a mother to a fresh new look on parenthood. She uses a mix of humor and real-life testimonials that not only provide good information but priceless wisdom and advice for surviving the many adventures of motherhood. The book talks about everything from dealing with the physical changes after childbirth to evaluating your career and life balance. It is packed with important advice including a resource guide in the back of the book containing contact information for manufactures, organizations and associations that you may need during that first year of motherhood. This book would help any new mom get through the twists and turns ahead. It is a book that new moms will use and treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Written specifically for expectant and new moms.......2001-07-05

Written specifically for expectant and new moms, Sheryl Gurrentz presents a superb and infinitely practical compendium of advice, tips, and techniques to care of the new baby and themselves. Especially recommended for women who seek to combine child care with career employment, Gurrentz demystifies early motherhood by covering a diversity of relevant subjects such as how much the body hurts even weeks after giving birth; what to do when feeling jealous that your partner goes to work while you are preempted by child care responsibilities for a new born; how to get a spouse to act like a parent and not just an assistant helper; how to protect modesty while publicly breast feeding; and what to do when life with a new baby doesn't turn out quite like you thought it would! Highly recommended reading, The Guilt-Free Guide To Your New Life As A Mom is an invaluable preparation while waiting for baby's arrival, and even more welcome when trying to adjust to baby after she or he has arrived to enliven, enhance, bewilder, and change your life!!

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book when my kids were little!.......2001-02-05

I bought this book for my sister who just had a baby. After reading through it, I am green with envy that she will have access to all the useful and practical information in this book! I had to learn so much through trial and error (the emphasis on error). I would have saved myself so much time and energy had I had a book like this one! Do you know how long it took me to figure out how to go out of the house with my baby and how much time I spent feeling guilty for not feeling totally, unconditionally fullfilled by motherhood?

I will buy this book for everyone I know who is having a baby!!

5 out of 5 stars Very good book..........2002-01-15

This book was even better than expected. I haven't finished it yet, but having a hard time putting it down. Highly recommend to any mother! Helped me get rid of the guilt of staying home.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable food for thought.......2000-06-14

All Mothers Work manages to affirm stay-at-home motherhood, without needing to put down mothers who work outside the home. Cindy Ramming has been both a stay-at-home mom and a working-outside-the-home mom, and knows whereof she speaks. Her informal, intimate, and humorous style makes this book a quick read. The first half of the book helps the reader decide if staying at home is for her, the second half has practical supportive advice for those who do decide to "stay at home" (including a key secret--to be a successful "stay at home" mom, you need to get out of the house!). Unlike so many books for mothers which create idealized perfectionistic standards, All Mothers Work is realistic and supportive--Rammings admits some of her own foibles, too, which we can all identify with. The only reason I gave the book 4 instead of 5 stars was that it was shorter than I would have liked.

5 out of 5 stars Because you're not "Just a Mom".......1999-06-30

An excellent source for women looking into the possibility of staying home, the book is also great for women who had already decided to do so. Great for stay-at-home women who, when asked what do they do, say "I'm just a Mom". It helped me to live with my own decision of quitting my job (and leaving behind a career) to take care of my daughter. Three cheers for Cindy Rammings!

5 out of 5 stars Not just for working mothers, but the ones already at home........1999-03-26

As a stay at home mom, I didn't think this book was for me, I had already made my decision. But as I read it, I was encouraged and affirmed in my choice to stay home and raise my children. Ramming also had some advice to help make the job easier.

5 out of 5 stars Non-judgmental, funny, easy to read, practical info.......1999-03-20

Cindy Ramming uses humor and her own life experience to help you assess the pro's and con's of working vs. staying at home. As an accountant, she evaluates the cost of working vs. the cost of staying home. Although she came to the conclusion that for her it was best emotionally and financially to stay home, she does not say that this choice is right for all mothers, rather, she helps give women tools to assess their own needs and come to their own conclusion. I look forward to reading future books by Mrs. Ramming.

    Book Description

In her book, Children as Teachers, Margaret Lester describes her personal miracle—the opportunity to found and direct a “new-thought” pre-school in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the early 1970s. There, in a tiny arena, “guilt-free” parenting, unconditional love, agreements, choices, and natural consequences ruled. In that environment the children, each in his or her own way resisted, tested, struggled or didnÂ't, and eventually thrived. The stories of the children unfold exactly as Marge experienced them. While often funny and charming, there is plenty to provoke thought. One is captured by MargeÂ's amazing ability to isolate her own judgments and fears as a caregiver to provide space for the children to experience the natural results of the choices theyÂ've made. Through these accounts accompanied by MargeÂ's thoughts and insights, the reader glimpses the children becoming the teachers and the birth of “guilt-free” parenting. This short book of stories is easy, entertaining reading and a painless introduction to a thoughtful way of relating to children.
