For me, freedom from the weight struggle has been worth taking the risk to try again just one more time." Suyin N. Client San Mateo, CA

5 out of 5 stars New Look at Old Problem.......2007-10-05

I've read a lot of books on how to lose weight. This is the first one that deals with the underlying emotional issues and not just controling the food. As a health care professional, I highl recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2007-10-04

This book has had a life changing effect on me. I am so glad I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a weight-loss book!.......2007-08-17

There are SO many books on this subject to choose from. If I had to choose just one, this would be it. It comes from a very loving place and offers some very real advice about why you are overweight and some real suggestions about what you can do about it. It goes deep at times, but once you realize that the outside is just a symptom, you can start focusing on what really matters and make changes that will last. The author suggests that you eat when you are hungry and stop when you're full, from -2 to 2 on a scale from -10 to 10 (so about every 2 or 3 hours). She encourages you to really pay attention to your body because it will let you know what it wants and needs. She asks you to commit to exercising at least 3 times a week for 5 minutes, and not eating or doing anything else to avoid your feelings. She wants her clients and readers to work with their bodies and no longer against them. It sounds simple, and it is, it's just that the whole subject has gotten so complicated we feel that there needs to be an elaborate answer. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book:
~"We have been trained not to waste food in the garbage, but to waste it on our bodies. Either way it is wasted. In one way, we just carry the waste with us."
~"Fat is merely tissue, stored potential energy."
****~If you believe that you will always be overweight, it will be very difficult to lose weight permanently. Beliefs and reality like to be reflective of each other. When reality starts to contradict a belief, a tension is created in our life and this tension makes us uncomfortable...At this point, we have two choices to reduce the tension: change the belief system or change the reality...to sabotage our reality and gain our weight back in order to be back in line with what we believe...It's not until we get hold of the belief and change it that we find any permanent weight-loss results."****
This would explain why most "diets" fail, because they are just treating the symptom and not the underlying problem.
This book is amazing and it was a total surprise, since I stumbled on it "accidentally." It works from the inside out, which is the best way to go about a permanent change. There are a lot of great exercises and suggestions. It was definitely worth my time and money, and I've already made a lot of the changes suggested in this book, and I feel more in control of my life and healthier already. A paradigm shift and a Fabulous book! =)

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-08-06

I almost cancelled my order for this book because I was very skeptical but I am so glad I received this book! I read over the entire book in a weekend and now re-reading it and doing the exercises. The exercises are an important part of the book. This is not just a book you should read but also need to work through the worksheets she includes. I've been overweight my entire life and for me this is the best book I've followed for losing weight. I do think this is a lot more than just about weight loss. By following the book will find greater joy in life. A lot of the info in the book can be used by everyone, not just those trying to lose weight. Highly recommend. Wish this book had been written 25 years ago!

4 out of 5 stars A happy surprise.......2007-07-04

I have to admit I was skeptical, but this book does a great job of explaining eating in a healthy way. Forget trying to remember the proper portion size, because the way Castillo does it is way more simple and more attuned to your body. I go back to this book when I find myself starting to overeat or craving unhealthy food. It was definately worth the purchase!

    5 out of 5 stars This is a Change-Your-Life book!.......2004-01-06

When I read this book, I was thinking, "Yeah, right! This is too easy." Well, I am very overweight (have 100 pounds to lose), so I was willing to try it (especially since it seemed so easy and logical). I decided to try what she said and NOT add exercise just to test the merits of her idea.

Well, I am happy to report that with very little effort and NO STARVING or deprivation, I dropped a dress size over the summer!!

The book comes with pop-outs in the shapes and sizes of certain foods that are unbelievably useful. In a very short time, I was not even able to eat the portions I used to. Also, the author discusses, in detail, body mass index, metabolism, etc., so that you clearly understand the benefit of eating and eating right.

I eat whatever I want as long as it is within a portion or less. I am eating 5-6 small healthy meals and I am now exercising. I tried everything before and nothing worked - BECAUSE DIETS DON'T WORK, BUT CHANGING YOUR LIFESTYLE DOES.

I highly recommend everyone, no matter your size, read this book! It will change your life!

2 out of 5 stars great recipes, but the diet isn't for everyone.......2002-07-27

The premise of this book--that we are all suffering from "portion distortion"--is right on the money. The "Super Duper Biggie" sized food we get these days at most restaurants (and not just fast-food) is bordering on the absurd--do we really need to consume a package of fries that's the equivalent of 3 whole potatoes?

The best thing about this book (and her other one) is the recipes--they truly are tasty and most are easy to prepare. Unfortunately the diet is overall just way too restrictive and the nutritional guidelines are outdated. Overall it's a very typical low-fat, high carbohydrate diet--they're a dime a dozen these days. And although the author does give lip service to including more whole grains in your diet, she still advocates bagels, bread, pasta, rice, tortillas and other refined starches in the food plan. She also clearly picks and chooses what research she shows to support her way of eating--ignoring the research showing that super low-fat diets do not result in lasting weight loss and can actually lead to increased triglycerides. Current research has shown pretty clearly that increased levels of healthy monounsaturated fats (such as olive oil) are health-promoting (in her defense she does encourage moderate consumption of "fatty fish" such as salmon, but it's not enough to make a difference). These principles of "portion savvy-ness" would be more helpful applied to a more reasonable eating plan (something along the lines of a Mediterranean diet, but with more globally-based menus).

Unless you're very inactive to begin with, you'll be very, very hungry on this diet. I'm a very active man who lifts weights several times a week, plus 3-4 hours of cardio a week and according to her calculations I need 1600 calories a day! Something's wrong there. I could only stay on it for about 3 days before my sanity was stretched to the limit. I was hoping to use this to lose the last 15 or so pounds while eating interesting food... unfortunately it missed the mark.

If you're looking for good recipes to include in your own eating program then this is worth it, but the low-fat, high-carb rhetoric is outdated and difficult to maintain.

5 out of 5 stars The only weight loss guide you'll ever need........2002-07-11

Most people know that the only key to safe, long-term weight loss is to eat less and exercise more. Sounds easy enough, but I always found it difficult to practice--until I read this book. Unlike most weightloss plans, Portion Savvy will help you determine how much you should eat and what to eat. The best part? You don't even have to count calories--the author has done all of the work for you. You'll learn how to eat REAL food (cereal, bagels, spaghetti, deli sandwiches, even pizza) in the correct-sized portions. If you enjoy cooking, the book includes several weeks worth of recipes that are all excellent. And for those who prefer to dine out, this book will show what to order and how much of it to eat. Highly recommend this book if you are ready to stop dieting and prepared to change your lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars Portion Savvy: The 30-Day Smart Plan..........2001-08-26

My physician husband recently used this book to achieve a 30 lb weight loss in 3 months. This is what he called "Something they never taught me in medical school". We never tried any dieting plan or read any diet books, so we can not really compare this book to others. One thing we do know is the priciples outlined in this book do work. We are lucky to read Wiatt's book as the very first and perhaps the very last diet book we will ever need. It is really about life long behavior change. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Portion Savvy: The 30-Day Smart Plan for Eating Well.......2000-02-02

I always thought I knew how & what to eat. That it was simply a matter of excersicing more to lose weight. I have never been interested in "dieting", most seemed so extreme, and didn't make sense nutrition wise. Nor was I interested in joining Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig, the programs don't teach you how to shop, cook or eat for yourself, you have to buy their food. I found this book easy to follow and have lost 25lbs since I read it 9 months ago. It gives you a terrific balance of day to day meal planning, recipes & nutrition information. Now I truely know how much food my body needs to maintain and lose weight. I highly recommend this book for anyone out there who has struggled with their weight. However, like anything you need to be serious about making changes in your habits for it to work. I have never lost this much weight doing anything else. Just try it!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding information.......2006-06-10

The muffin recipes are creative--the baker can please anyone. The book is well organized in terms of the baker's purpose and kinds of recipes. Furthermore, there is enough technical information to make substitutions for allergy or sensitivity to any given substance. Here at Coppertoppe Lodge & Retreat Center, we specialize in accommodating special food needs. This book is one of the references we keep in the kitchen, instead of in the Library. We use it all the time. It really is about smart food!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the BIG price for such a LITTLE book.......2000-02-15

What makes this book extra valuable is it's introductory material on WHY the recipes in the book are healthful and it's glossary-like listing that details the benefits of particular ingredients. Also unique; there is a chapter devoted to "meals-in-a-muffin" with unexpected recipes (rice & bean muffins, muffins w/veggies...)that defy traditional muffin making. Every recipe I've tried has been so yummy, that, per suggestion of the author, I've taken to baking in bulk & individually wrapping my muffins to store in the 'fridge/freezer!

    Book Description

A fast-food diet? It may seem like an oxymoron, but for the millions of Americans living a low-carb lifestyle-many of whom still end up eating on the run at fast-food joints and sitting down with their families at chain restaurants-The Smart-Carb Guide to Eating Out shows how to stick to a low-carb diet when eating on the go.

Rather than simply listing the nutritional content and requiring us to do the math ourselves to figure out what to eat, Tracy Jones, M.S., provides a shortcut by listing which menu items (or combination of menu items) compose a smart-carb meal that is compatible with The Zone, South Beach, or any 40-30-30 diet. The book also provides calorie and carb content so that readers can easily customize meals to meet their own nutritional needs. And with the help of the 7-Day Quick Start Program, readers can quickly implement their favorite fast-food meals-like the Classic Single hamburger and Junior Frosty at Wendy's-to jump-start their weight loss.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy, inspiring guide.......2006-07-21

I first purchased this book in its first, self published edition and was blown away. I was already eating 'zone' (i.e. proportions of 40-30-30 of Carbs, Protein and Fat calories) and a big fan, but it was such a hassle figuring out what to eat at restaurants, especially fast food. Because of work, I often had to resort to this option, so Tracy's book was a welcome resource, and I have used it often over the years, especially recently.

At first glance, it may appear that meals are way too small to be satisfying (for an average woman, a meal of 350 calories, for example, which may be Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich with no mayo and only the bottom half of the bun), but that is the magic of the zone- by eating enough fat and protein with your carbs, your body is triggered to feel full and happy on an appropriate amount of food. For me, just going to Wendy's feels like a treat, and if I can have a frostee with my meal (one of the other meal options), I don't feel deprived. Incorporating the meals in this book with other 'zone' eating is helping me lose weight and not feel hungry.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER! MUST BUY FOR EVERYONE!.......2005-02-08

After reading this book, I was amazed at how simple her concept and rules are. She does all the math for you, it's so simple to follow. In fact, it works out perfectly for my busy, on-the-run schedule. What more could you ask for, YOU CAN EAT OUT AND LOSE WEIGHT!

5 out of 5 stars Keeping healthy while eating out........2005-01-13

In this type of society where men as well as women work, there is not enough time to prepare a healthy meal.
Thanks to Tracy Jones I can eat the right food outside the home. I can work and know that I always can go to a fast food or family restaurant and get the right amount of food without worrying about counting my calories or carbs.
Another important benefit of following the menus she describes in this book is the level of energy that you have after eating. I can go back to work and I have such a high level of energy that you might think that I took a nap. I am now alert all the time and I am not hungry for four hours since I feel satisfied with what I ate. Finally, the snacks in between keeps me going the rest of the day.
I also really enjoy the recipies of the salads that I can prepare at home.
Furthermore, my insulin level is going to be controlled because I am eating a balance diet (40-30-30). I will be a healthy person.
This book explains the diet in a very simple and easy way to follow.
Thank you for making one part of my life easier.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, easy, easy!.......2005-01-13

I love the way the author explains what's going on in your body as food interacts with processes like producing (or NOT producing) fat! The intro by Dr. Barry Sears ("The Zone") was impressive, and this book is SO great to have when eating at fast food restaurants. Thanks!

    3 out of 5 stars Smart Eating?.......2000-07-18

I learned a lot from this book but it really left me wanting to know more. His other books are much better. The recipes were not very exciting. I loved his other books and was dissappointed with this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......1996-09-17

This is the most sensible way to look at food I have discoverd. I've heard Gates lecture and it's too bad her diet plan strategy is not in the book (she reported Bailey "lost interest" in the "writing process" of the book so this was excuded.
