Lots of Information in an Easy to Read Book.......2007-08-27
As an Occupational Therapist I focus on the obstacles my students face in their everyday lives and particularly in school. Often my students have received a diagnosis of ADHD but actually present with symptoms that, in my opinion, are better represented by other disorders such as Aspergers and Central Auditory Processing Disorders. Dr. Kutscher's book emphasizes the co occurence of various disorders and confirms that a single diagnosis is the exception and not the norm in these complex students.
The book is packed with information that includes essential vocabulary and concepts, web sites, and reference to experts in research and treatment. While Dr. Kutscher jokes about how he may be oversimplifying concepts and brain function, he actually includes many key concepts that can greatly clarify the struggles of children in the syndrome mix. Some examples of the information presented in the book that, I believe, would enlighten teachers, pediatricians, parents, etc. include the following: the demoralizing result of receiving a zero on a school paper;the Connor's checklist;contextual clues and reading; phonological dysfunction and early signs of dyslexia;Fry's Instant Word List; establishing a hand dominence by 2; the 4 areas of communication;Theory of Mind; an adult using "child speak" to help a child develop social skills; social stories; using the child's special interests to engineer friendships; and sensory integration dysfunction. If the reader takes advantage of the suggestions in the Further Reading section then more in depth knowledge of subjects that are only touched upon in the book can be obtained.
Dr. Kutscher reminds us not to treat these complex children as typical because they are not. One can view them as having a wonderful uniqueness or as having a disability that needs to be accomodated for. I agree it is very important not to expect typical behaviors from these children. For them to become all that they can be and to have good self esteem, they need special consideration and help.I enjoy working with these children and I am often impressed by their uniqueness and gifts.
Thank you, Dr. Kutscher!.......2007-07-30
I want to know how the author knew my kid to a "T" without ever having met him! This book was amazing and tied together several of my son's challenges in ways that no one ever had before! Instead of dealing with each "diagnosis" in isolation, they were related to one another and the interactions - positive and negative - were examined. Just knowing why something that "should" work didn't - in such clear and reasonable language - takes SO MUCH of the stress off of us as parents, advocates and caregivers.
The language, terminology and humor made this a very accessible and comfortable read. The density of information made it a reasonable slow but very rewarding read. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any parent, teacher, grandparent, friend or cargiver of a child (or adult)with any of the neurodevelopmental disorders it covers. You'll most likely find out that the picture is more complex but definitely more manageable and less frustrating when all the variables are considered.
Thank you, Dr. Kutscher!

I had first read this book at the library but it had so much helpful information that i decided i needed it in my home library as a reference guide to go back to-this book is one that any parent who has a child with emotional disorders should read.I have recommended it to my sons therapist/counselers/doctors/teachers and my own support group.

Pop quiz. Please complete the following sentence: "There are days when I get up in the morning and stagger into the bathroom and begin running water and then I look up and I don't even recognize my own _." If you answered face, then your name is obviously not Jonathan Lethem. Instead of taking the easy out, the genre-busting novelist concludes this by-the-numbers string of words with toothbrush in the mirror.
This brilliant sentence and a lot of other really excellent ones compose Lethem's engaging fifth novel, Motherless Brooklyn. Lionel Essrog, a detective suffering from Tourette's syndrome, spins the narrative as he tracks down the killer of his boss, Frank Minna. Minna enlisted Lionel and his friends when they were teenagers living at Saint Vincent's Home for Boys, ostensibly to perform odd jobs (we're talking very odd) and over the years trained them to become a team of investigators. The Minna men face their most daunting case when they find their mentor in a Dumpster bleeding from stab wounds delivered by an assailant whose identity he refuses to reveal--even while he's dying on the way to the hospital.
Detectives? Brooklyn? Is this the same Lethem who danced the postapocalypso in Amnesia Moon? Incredibly, yes, and rarely has such a departure been pulled off with this much aplomb. As in the "toothbrush" passage above, Lethem sets himself up with the imposing task of making tired conventions new. Brooklyn accents? Fuggetaboutit. Lethem's dialogue is as light on its feet as a prize fighter. Lionel's Tourette's could have been an easy joke, but Lethem probes so convincingly into the disorder that you feel simultaneously rattled, sympathetic, and irritated by the guy. Sure, the story is a mystery, but Motherless Brooklyn could be about flower arranging, for all we care. What counts is Lionel's tic-ridden take on a world full of surprises, propelling this fiction forward at edgy, breakneck speed. --Ryan Boudinot
Book Description
From America's most inventive novelist, Jonathan Lethem, comes this compelling and compulsive riff on the classic detective novel.
Lionel Essrog is Brooklyn's very own self-appointed Human Freakshow, an orphan whose Tourettic impulses drive him to bark, count, and rip apart our language in startling and original ways. Together with three veterans of the St. Vincent's Home for Boys, he works for small-time mobster Frank Minna's limo service cum detective agency. Life without Frank Minna, the charismatic King of Brooklyn, would be unimaginable, so who cares if the tasks he sets them are, well, not exactly legal. But when Frank is fatally stabbed, one of Lionel's colleagues lands in jail, the other two vie for his position, and the victim's widow skips town. Lionel's world is suddenly topsy-turvy, and this outcast who has trouble even conversing attempts to untangle the threads of the case while trying to keep the words straight in his head.
Motherless Brooklyn is a brilliantly original homage to the classic detective novel by one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation.
Customer Reviews:
"You a car service or a comedy team?".......2007-09-02
In "Motherless Brooklyn," Jonathan Lethem melds several genres, among them the bildungsroman, psychological novel, literary parody--all in the occasionally transparent framework of a detective story. The most famous aspect of the book is its hero's Tourette syndrome (the influence of Oliver Sacks's work is quite apparent), but the neurological condition itself takes on a life of its own, simultaneously moving and comic--and an opportunity for Lethem to indulge in some freakishly inventive wordplay that owes as much to James Joyce as to Mad magazine and the Artist Formerly Known as Prince.
The opening scene is on a par with the best of pulp fiction. Eating White Castle sliders daintily arrayed in a row of six (a compulsive aspect of his neurosis), Lionel Essrog stakes out an Upper East Side Zen studio with his associate Gilbert Coney, with the two of them standing guard as their boss Frank Minna is inside, wired for sound and exchanging cryptic arguments with some unknown heavy. It's at this point that everything goes wrong, and the ensuing chase scene through Queens and murder in Brooklyn provide one of the novel's highlights.
Lionel and Gilbert are just two of the four orphans hired (adopted, really) by Minna for a detective agency masquerading as a car service. (One of the recurrent gags is the group's supply of creative explanations to prospective customers for the lack of cars.) As a Minna Man, Lionel finds a father figure and a family where his Tourette's is not ignored but nevertheless accepted; Tony's pet name for him, "the free human freak show," serves more as a term of endearment than as a slur and indicates Minna's moderately disguised understanding that Lionel is the savviest of the bunch (Minna's estranged wife tells Lionel the reason Minna finds him useful is because everyone thought he was "stupid").
It's the interplay of the characters and Lionel's bumbling entry into adulthood that provide most of the novel's interest. As for the noir-inspired plot: there's hardly a cliche that Lethem doesn't send up--Italian mobsters and an evil corporation, the intrusively clueless police officer and a traitorous colleague, a sequence of red-herring clues and an offstage murder. ("Have you ever felt, in the course of reading a detective novel, a guilty thrill of having a character murdered before he can step onto the page and burden you with his actual existence? Detective stories have too many characters anyway.")
Yet the crime story itself never lives up the dizzying pursuit of the opening scene, and Lethem faces the difficulty of writing a parody of authors who themselves wrote masterful parodies (e.g., "The Thin Man," "The High Window"). Instead, the potboiler elements play shotgun both to Lethem's neurological-intellectual wordplay and to the emotional growth of his lead character. Lethem's novel has "too many characters anyway," and he resists the temptation to let the mystery gum up the works.
That's not necessarily a bad thing--unless you're expecting an old-fashioned whodunit or keystone caper. But Lethem's novel is less a whodunit than a howdunit--or, in this case, how the author does it: creating an affecting protagonist whose tongue twitches with the pulse of the cultural zeitgeist.
Loved Lionel...plot needs work........2007-09-01
Appreciated greatly the author's ability to put the reader in the mind of Lionel who had Tourette's Syndrome. Similarly his descriptions of the Brooklyn neighborhood came alive. I laughed and was saddened in several passages. This was easily a 5-rate. However, the plot was far-fetched as one waded toward the end of the book and not believable and this was disappointing and would lead me to not recommend this book.
Interesting.......2007-08-23
Lethem uses the English language in very unusual, and yet workable, ways. His unique take on the detective genre may yet inspire others.
Kinda disappointing..........2007-06-09
I really like Jonathan Lethem as an author. His books are usually quite interesting, clever, and humorous. Motherless Brooklyn disappointed me. The humor was not there, I seriously think Lethem tried to be funny but it simply failed. The characters were especially bland, and it was hard to become "attached" to Lionel the main character/narrarator. He spent too much time informing us that Lionel has Tourette's Syndrome, not enough time developing the story. The Tourette's was seriously (as someone previously stated in their review) the crutch that this book propped itself up on. Had it spent more time on the story, the book would have earned at least 4 stars because the story was interesting when time was spent explaining it. Gun, With Occassional Music is a much better detective story in my opinion. After a while, while I enjoyed parts of the book, I found myself reading it so that I could finish it. For serious Lethem fans only.
Lyrical, Thoughtful, One-of-a-Kind.......2007-06-07
Nothing about this book should be compared, I believe, to any standard genre fiction. The only standard is clear, compelling writing with believable characters and honest events. So rich is Lionel's world, and he is such a keen observer, that the experience is lifted to a feeling of depth like few other pieces of modern-day writing. The plot is really about self-discovery, about stepping outside your comfort zone, and about finding a home. So many wonderful, touching scenes side-by-side with compelling tension and a terrific, underlying drive to the plot.
Product Description
For decades, finding information on alternative treatments for tics has been next to impossible. Theres a widespread desire to avoid conventional drugs, yet people have not known where to turn to find safer therapies. This situation took a sharp turn when a group of cutting-edge doctors and determined families started reporting dramatic success in treating tics naturally. Sheila J. Rogers, director of the nonprofit Association for Comprehensive NeuroTherapy (ACN), began investigating these reports and sharing them through the organization. Rogers conducted countless interviews with patients, professionals, and families, and ACN sponsored a large-scale survey that resulted in exciting, new details on the causes of tics.

Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in Natural Treatments
As a concert-pianist, music therapist, author, and an individual living with Tourette Syndrome, I must "take my hat off" to Sheila Rogers for bringing together a cascade of knowledge by various doctors, pediatric neurologists,
authors and many other leading authorities. As there is no cure for Tourette Syndrome, parents, families and adults are desperately seeking out new inovations and ideas with the hope that somewhere a new approach/approaches will come to the forefront. This book offers exactly what so many have been looking for, thought provoking ideas without the side-effects of medication, approaches that
are natural and display underlying commom sense!
Since reading the book, I have followed many of the inovative ideas and have found improvement in my own tics.
As a music therapist, which is also a natural, non side effect technique, I have incorporated the many findings in this book with my own student's!
BRAVO! SHEILA J. ROGERS!, what will you come up with next!

Must read for those with children with tics!!.......2007-03-09
This book is eye-opening and thought-provoking. Just consider the possibility of your child being tic-free or at least know you might have the chance of reducing the incidence of tics without medication. Get this book, and share it with others.
Excellent Overview of Tic Disorders and Natural Alternative Treatment Options.......2007-01-22
This was an informative book. There certainly is hope for those suffering from these disorders that doesn't necessarily have to involve dangerous drugs. I am a candidate for a doctorate as a Naturopath and will use this in my resource library. The question to always ask is what is my body/mind trying to tell me with regard to my symptoms. This book will guide you to look at the symptoms and ask those questions. It will also help you begin your journey by suggesting various avenues to explore. It leaves the reader with a sense of hope for successfully treating the root causes naturally. Treatment can be multi-faceted, often like putting together a puzzle. The end result makes it worth all the time and energy spent. Hope is something soarly lacking in most medical resources for these disorders, that makes this book all the more valuable.
This is a MUST HAVE resource!.......2007-01-11
After a diagnosis of Tourettes Syndrome a few month ago, and hearing that my 12 year old would "grow out of it" from the medical community, I decided to investigate on my own. My son also has eczema, allergies (environmental and food) and asthma. Being on too much medicine already for a child (in my opinion), another prescription was out of the question. This book is a God-send! I see our situation throughout the book, and Sheila J. Rogers has written in a way that is easy to understand. She provides hope and practical information that I have already put into action (and I'm only half way through the book!). The book does not demean the medical community, but offers an alternative to us who refuse to believe that this is how our loved one has to be. The advice in this book is sound commonsense from reputable sources backed by experience from families of children with TS. I highly recommned this book as a vital key in helping your loved one. Whether your loved one is newly diagnosed, on medication, or you just suspect there is something "wrong"... you need this book!

Customer Reviews:
A little DATED but worthwhile if you use caution........2007-02-01
This book needs to be updated badly. The behaviors in this book are spot on. Remember its a syndrome, you definatly WILL get some of the features of this neurobiological disorder but not all of them. I used this book while my adopted son was growing up. It helped me a lot. The book catalogues the lives of about 2,000 patients that were seen by Dr. Comings and his collegues, and so it covers pretty much everything. A few rules to follow if you have a loved one with this disorder:
1 - Never Lie
2 - Make no promises
3 - Never strive to create an ill feeling in someone with TS, they
create their own guilt, anger, disapointment, and sorrow.
4 - Set the best possible example and shun risk
5 - When they are young keep a regular schedule, structure is VERY good
6 - Try to have a cold temper, HOT tempers are not usefull
7 - They like bland food, do not fight over food, fix 2 meals, they eat
cheep
8 - They really do not know what happens next, and react badly to
unpleasant surprises.
9 - NO BB GUNS!
10 - They are easily taken advantage of, watch them like a hawk, they
WILL jump off a clif if their best friend does.
11 - Port - A - Patsy, scrutinize their friends closely. I'm not so sure
that the big crime figures are the result of bad behavior as much as
poor choises in friends.
12 - Be proactive and have a plan for failure.
13 - Absolutely NEVER allow someone with TS to posses a NUKYELLAR BOMB.
Sorry, my son got me again. ;-)
FULL OF OUTDATED & WRONG INFO -DON"T BUY!.......2006-01-25
As a parent of a child with Tourette's, I feel I must warn anyone trying to learn about TS to ABSOLUTELY NOT buy this horrifying book. It is full of completely outdated and flat out wrong information that has long since been dismissed by current clinical studies. Please skip it and go read Brad Cohen's book
Editor@Tourettes-Disorder.com - Review.......2004-12-01
This book is a great book for the patient diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at the secondary and tertiary level of the disorder; or a person in a personal relationship with the same patient. They will understand and relate much more throughout the pages without a "Scare Factor". There are possible more sever co-morbid conditions the Dr. amplifies in the secondary and tertiary diagnosis which are not so prevalent in a first level diagnosis if at all.
I doc the book only 1 star solely for the purpose of some statistical analysis concerns which for the most part are of little value to most patients. It's a M.D. and Ph.D neurological posturing and arguing point for clinicians, researchers among many other peer review arguments. Nonetheless, the adjustment is warranted.
One of the wonderful qualities of the book is the ease of language character for the lay reader in respect of the volume size and medical matter. It is not hard to understand the theories, line of reasoning, and detail Dr. Comings presents.
True; the Dr.'s work is vastly based on those who seek treatment for the disorder, as would be expected because of his practice and leadership at the City of Hope. This is a plus however for those who seek treatment because it focuses on that range of patients. For that margin of patients it is illuminating and liberating to have a name and understanding by medical clinicians of what Tourettes has meant to them on their level.
For a mild case of Tourettes, this may only be a book you can discover information about others who suffer from the disorder more than you. Don't let it scare you however. Even if your case is mild, the pedigree education, charts, tables, neurology, survey and more, can help you understand a riddle.
"Having Tourettes is kind of like a riddle. Tourette Syndrome can be tough to understand and solve, however like a riddle, Tourette Syndrome can be quite easy to accept once you understand it." - Paul Marshall - Editor Tourettes-Disorder.com
Caution, a terrifying book for those new to the syndrome.......2003-03-06
This unfortunately was the first book I read on the subject of Tourette Syndrome. My child was then 4 years old and newly diagnosed with the condition, and an absolute angel, sweetheart, mild-mannered, sociable pre-schooler with tics. I needed therapy after reading this book for fear of all the horrible things that might become reality for my child, not to mention I felt so low about my family members from a genetic pool standpoint, I wondered if I'd ever be able to lift my head proudly again.
Fortunately many years have passed and much of what was indicated that very well could become my child's reality in living with Tourette Syndrome, (in terms of difficulties with the condition and socialization), never did. A second child within my family was later dx'd with the same syndrome and happily for us, things are going much better than this book would have ever lead me to believe.
I encourage those who are new to this condition to start reading somewhere else before tackling this book, and when and if you decide to read this one, make sure you have a support group lined up for the after math. In my opinion, this book may very well cause more grief than the condition, if for no other reason than for the fear mongering of what may never come to pass.
Fortunately, much research has been done in recent years on the condition, and I feel that the picture of living with Tourette Synderome is much brighter than my earlier days when I had nothing other than this book to benchmark the condition by.
Dated and too inclusive.......2003-03-06
This book was written in 1990, and there have been great strides in research since then. Comings lumps too many other diagnoses into a description of Tourette Syndrome, which is confusing and can be catastrophic when you are trying to get the right treatment for an individual. Yes, SOME people with Tourette's have the other complications that Comings describes- but NOT ALL. It is fine to be treated for ADHD, OCD, TS, and other conditions if that is what you or your child has, but if you don't have ADHD, OCD, and other conditions, you deserve to be treated only for what you do have.
The book is also slanted because it is based upon research that represents those who seek treatment for TS, not the general population with TS. Most people who seek treatment for TS have more complicated problems than just tics. Research since this book was published is more inclusive of the wider population.
For the best and most up to date information, stick with the Leckman/Cohen book. Or read Amy Wilensky's book. Stay away from Comings. So much has changed in 13 years of research into TS and the human genome.

Book Description
A revised and concise guide to the latest thoughts and findings on Tourette's Syndrome
Edited by two of the leading international authorities on Tourette's Syndrome and tic-related, obsessive-compulsive disorders, Tourette's Syndrome is the most up-to-date edited reference covering this neuropsychiatric disorder and related disorders from a variety of perspectives. Featuring contributors from the world-renowned Yale Child Study Center, this volume introduces a groundbreaking developmental framework for understanding Tourette's-defined by persistent motor and vocal tics and frequently associated with obsessions, compulsions, and attentional difficulties-and maps out the diagnosis, genetics, manifestations, and treatment.
Reflecting more than 25 years of research, this comprehensive resource describes the major categories of disorders (TS, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities) as well as the strengths and adaptation of individuals with Tourette's. A broad, detailed discussion of pathogenesis is provided, including epidemiological studies and environmental risk and protective factors. The book also highlights the necessary partnerships between children, families, and clinicians in the struggle to achieve wished-for outcomes.
Enriched by the knowledge of specialists at the forefront of genetics, psychology, neuropsychology, pharmacology, neurochemistry, and epidemiology, among other fields, Tourette's Syndrome gives clinicians valuable insight into the minds of and proper care for individuals battling this and related disorders.

Leckman and book is right on........2002-10-27
I bought this book after I found it mentioned in several posts and chat rooms for Tourette's Syndrome.
James Leckman and his book are held in high regard by the TS community.
If you are looking for an approach to the problem that doesn't involve drugs, look here, it is covered. There are techniques and methods explained, such as Habit Reversal, that have been validated as working for TS; validated over a long time. The method was originated in 1973 by Azrin. ....
Excellent resource to have in your reference library.......1999-11-07
Even if you work with only one or two children with Tourette's Syndrome, this compilation of over 25 years of research results with a client base of thousands is an excellent resource to have in your reference library. The documentation of multidisciplinary contributions makes it convenient to explore concepts further without having to search through a wide variety of professional journals. Two useful features include the summary of one chapter and preview of the next on the same page and the assessment tools found in the Appendices. The recommended treatment approach focuses on supporting development of the child over time, rather than just eliminating symptoms. A multidisciplinary team of professionals can provide a variety of treatment approaches to address the factors affecting the child at home and at school. Coordination by a flexible, non-doctrinaire clinician, and partnerships with parents and teachers are encouraged. While the authors suggest that the school psychologist fill this role, not all schools have access to one with the necessary perspective on treatment. Instead, the licensed professional social worker is more likely to employ the multidisciplinary, strengths-based, coordinated approach to caring for children with Tourette's Syndrome and related conditions. Contributions from licensed professional social workers would be an asset to the next edition.
This book is an excellent resource.......1999-09-17
This is one of the best and most comprehensive works on Tourette's Syndrome I've come across. Scientists and/or practitioners working with people who have TS should buy this book. As a psychologist who works with people who have TS, I've found this book to be my best resource on the subject.

Book Description
When first published, this guide for parents of children and teens with Tourette syndrome (TS) was the only book to offer up-to-date information and advice for families. Now in an updated edition,
Children with Tourette Syndrome offers even more. There's new information on the latest research and medical developments in the field, and sections on education, legal rights, family life, daily care, and emotional issues are thoroughly revised.
Written by leading experts in the field and experienced parents, this guide provides an excellent blend of professional expertise and empathetic advice. Families with newly diagnosed children find answers to their most pressing questions about this often perplexing neurological disorder, as well as coping strategies and emotional support.
The second edition includes new information about the effects of Tourette syndrome at different stages of development from childhood into adulthood. There's more on coexisting conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, Asperger syndrome, and learning disabilities. The book also provides an overview of the biochemistry of TS, what to expect from a medical workup, as well as a discussion of more than 30 different drugs used to treat TS and related conditions. There are strategies for coping with many of the challenging characteristics of TS such as impulsivity, obsessive thoughts, attention and sleep problems, and difficulties with sensory integration. A new chapter on Habit Reversal Training (HRT) explains how this behavior intervention can help some people control tics. Parents find the latest on special education rights, and expanded information on how to design an appropriate education plan for their child.
For families raising a child with TS, this comprehensive handbook gives them hope and relieves their sense of isolation. It's also essential reading for professionals and teachers who need to understand this complex disorder.

Easy to understand, comprehensive, helpful!.......2007-07-02
I initially checked out this book from the library to learn more about the disability we suspected our son has. Because I was so impressed with it, I bought the book. It is an excellent source of information on TS (Tourette Syndrome), along with other related conditions, both for parents of children who have been diagnosed with TS or parents who simply suspect their child may have TS. She educates parents on how to go about getting an accurate and comprehensive evaluation for their child, information on dealing with the challenges of TS, and being an advocate for the child with TS.
Children with Tourette Syndrome: A Parent's Guide.......2007-04-12
This book is an excellent resource for parents whose child has Tourette's. It explains the disease, treatment, interventions, resources, and so forth. Excellent and easy to read. Great resource also for those with ADHD, especially since ADHD and Tourette Syndrome sometimes go hand in hand. I highly recommend it both as a grandparent of a child with both Tourette's and ADHD, and as a health professional!
Excellent Resource For Parents.......2005-03-31
My son has Tourettes. This was the first book that I bought when he was diagnosed and I found it to be invaluable. It is a great resource for the parents of the newly diagnosed or even those who have been dealing with it for some time. The book lets you know what to expect and how to cope. A must have for anyone dealing with a special needs child with this disorder.
Jam Packed Guide for Parents and Professionals.......2002-03-25
This is a compact little guide is packed with useful information both for parents and professionals. It is not cluttered with long narratives of people's "personal stories". While there is definitely a place for that approach, I needed a quick primer that would easily acquaint me with the full range of difficulties faced by a child with Tourette Syndrome as well as those faced by her parents. As a clinican, I needed to arm myself in a hurry with an understanding of the essential issues relevant to this population in order to manage a school crisis. It gave me everything I needed to effectively advocate for my young client and her parents.
It is a quick read, informative and clear. The book humanizes TS and provides basic information about etiology, development, and treatment, medication, symptom management, and guidlines on how to interact with school staff. Suggestions for designing an effective educational plans, advocacy strategies, and a basic description of legal rights are also included.
I recommend this book without hesitation.
Very informative, enormously helpful, with great advice.......2001-06-13
My 8-year-old son has ADHD, OCD and tic disorders (though not full-blown Tourette Syndrome). This book was an enormous help for me in understanding the tic disorder and also the ADHD and OCD which often co-occur with TS and tic disorders. It is written in a very easy to read, friendly, compassionate way. There is a lot of clear advice here. TS is complex and often misunderstood. The book helps you cope with and understand many of the related problems. It teaches acceptance, dealing with friends, relatives, schools, etc. It is a very thorough book. After reading it, I felt less helpless and more empowered to deal with these issues. The book talks about the importance of acknowledging your child's frustrations and feelings, which will help him to learn to share them more directly with you. For example, saying, "I know you're trying really hard, and it's frustrating when the other students can't seem to understand that you can't stop doing certain things." This book helps you to also empower your child, and to embrace what is special about him. It says, "If you believe in your child as an individual whose Tourette syndrome is only one aspect of her total being, your child will also be more likely to see herself as someone with abilities, rather than disabilities." I strongly recommend this book. It will help.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful Book!.......2007-07-07
I am a social worker as well as a mother of a child just diagnosed with Tourette's. This book was wonderful! My son has been trying to understand what is going on with him and this book was very useful. It explains Tourette's to the child as well as the adule. One thing I loved about the book is it shows the boy in the story having new tics. This allows for readers to understand that tics change as well as showing many types of tics. One example was the boy in the story began to spit, a tic my son has and gets made fun of for. My son's face lit up and he felt less "weird". My son and I are going to do a presentation at his summer camp so others understand why he does what he does, I will be including this book.
I can't Stop.......2007-05-08
This was an excellent book and well worth the money. It is easy to read, hard cover, with great pictures. We bought this to explain to our son (9) who has TS and also to his younger brother (6). The book is written as a child telling the story of how and why he was diagnosed, his fears of explaining to friends and finally acceptance. It was great to read with my boys as they could relate to so much of the story. It was also helpful that my son realised he wasn't alone and that if they could write a book about the way things happened, then others went the same way. We even had similar tics (not all) which helped. We have also used it to try and explain to other family members what we have been going through.
fantastic book.......2007-03-26
This book is a must for anyone who has or knows of a child with Tourette's Syndrome. My 8 yr old son, who has Tourette's, brought in the book to his 2nd grade class. His teacher read it aloud and then the class asked my son questions. The book went a long way in helping overcome the social obstacles that a child with Tourette's will surely face, and clearly explains that some behaviors are truely out of the child's control and why. I would recommend this book highly for children, parents and teachers alike!
Inclusive Overview .......2007-02-07
This book is perfect for introducing TS to anyone new to the diagnosis. It normalizes the typical experiences which precede and follow the diagnosis. I have used it for peer education in a classroom setting, as well as for individual youngsters (& their families).
Great Book.......2007-01-22
My 8 year old son was diagnosed with motor and vocal tics over the summer of 2006. I purchased many books to educate him, our family, his classmates and teachers. This was by far the best book for educating his peers. It is told in a story format and shows the confusion of parents and friends when a child has tics. The boy in the story has a wide range of motor and vocal tics and my son was thrilled when a couple of the tics were exactly like his. It helped him to feel more normal and less powerless to see there was someone else with the same tics. His classmates were very attentive when I read the story aloud. It helped them to understand my sons noises and movements and why he was allowed to get up in the middle of class and go outside if he felt a loud tic was coming on. This book validates the feelings of confused parents and upset friends as well as a myriad of feelings that the child with TS is dealing with. It is a compassionate book as well as an informative and entertaining book.

Hi, I'm Adam.......2005-02-06
This book is WONDERFUL! We are raising our 11 year old nephew who has Tourette's, along with several other things, and he really needed some help understanding Tourette's so that he could explain it to his peers. He's been picked on at school because of his tics and we wanted something that he could read and understand. This fit the bill! THANK YOU, ADAM! He's reading Adam and the Magic Marble now. He said its a little harder to read (he's a little behind in reading skills than most 11 y/o's) but its a good read. He took it to bed tonight to read more.
WOW.. I'm glad some of you liked my book.........2001-03-11
WOW! You have no idea how good it feels seeing that some people actually appreciated my writings.. that's just awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to understand how i felt (I was only 10) about having to live with Tourette's Syndrome. Thanks even more for reviewing my book.. wow. I'm glad to see I've been able to reach people and help them. I'm 20 now, and it's been 10 years since I wrote those books, but it was a genuine feeling of accomplishment and meaning when I read your reviews. Again, thank you very much, you just made my dad/week/year..
(It wouldn't let me post this without rating the book, so I gave it a middle-rating of 3, hope I don't affect anything with that)
Great book for even an oldster like me.......1999-10-12
The book is written for a very young audience, but when my 27 year-old son read it he cried. He could remember feeling the same way, and even doing the same things. He had never talked to anyone about it, but really opened up after reading it. We had a hard time getting a diagnosis, so it was especially heartfelt for me to learn that we're not alone in this big thing.
Very insightful and we're glad we found it.......1999-10-12
Our entire Tourette group has passed this book around and it is very good. Even small children can understand the messages here. And, they are happy to find out a young child their age wrote it. Two adult Touretters also said they felt just that way, and never thought anyone else did.
Boring, not informative.......1999-07-20
I read this with my 9 year old son who has tourette syndrome. Neither of us got much out of the book. Too short, even for the price.
Book Description
Dylan Peters has lived with Tourette Syndrome more than half of his young life. Only four years old when he was first diagnosed with TS, Dylan is now nine and ready to enter the fourth grade. What he's learned about tolerance and acceptance during those five years, most of us fail to learn in an entire lifetime. In his own words--often humorous, always insightful--Dylan helps others, young and old, understand Tourette Syndrome and the enormous pressures this little, mysterious affliction places on those who have it and on those who love them. Illustrated by Dylan's friend, Zachary Wendland.

Highly recommended picturebook for school libraries and for teaching young people everywhere about Tourette Syndrome........2007-02-04
Written by a 9-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at age 4, Tic Talk: Living with Tourette Syndrome tells young Dylan Peters' story about day-to-day life with Tourette Syndrome in his own words. Simple, colorful illustrations by Dylan's best friend Zachary Wendland drive home this straightforward, tell-it-like-it-is story. "TS causes uncontrollable body movements or sometimes repeating words, sounds, or phrases over and over. These are called tics. The biggest bummer about having tics is that you can't make them stop no matter how hard you try, and believe me I have tried! It's like your brain has a mission to annoy you and make everyone around you notice these bizarre actions." A set of ten successful strategies for working with children with Tourette Syndrome and a list of additional resources round out this highly recommended picturebook for school libraries and for teaching young people everywhere about Tourette Syndrome.

Touching lesson for kids and adults.......2007-01-12
This story more than just explains TS, which it does well. It is an honest account of a child's journey to find courage, a lesson that applies to all of us regardless of age or obstacles. Rewarding read!

Breakthrough to New Understanding.......2006-11-10
This is a 'must read' for parents and all professionals who have contact with the young.
Of particular signicance is the section dealing with the importance of nutrition. Food for serious thought as well as for the brain !
A label only tells about symptoms, not the causes........2006-06-21
Pauc's "the Learning Disability Myth" is fast, clear and easy to read. Using all the latest neurological research, he cuts through the educational jargon that gives a name to your child's difficulties, but would not get rid of what is actually causing the symptoms.
Taking a health history of the child, and looking at the symptoms, he shows how to design an exercise program that will change the function of the brain. Combined with restructioning the connections in the brain he urges providing the chemical support the brain needs by the simple method of changing the child's diet.
Unlike most books on the subject which fail to take advantage of the research by neurologists that the brain is plastic, he suggests methods to give your child the best organized brain possible.
Pauc lets you know that a label is not a life sentence and that you can help your child.
