5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Urgent Care.......2005-10-20

I just graduated FP residency and am working Urgent Care, and find this book incredibly useful! I carry it with me to work daily, and have refrenced it often. It is a great quick refresher to look at just before going in to a little done (or never done!) procedure! Great step by step instructions, and what to watch out for.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wilderness First Aid for the real world outdoorsman.......2003-07-08

This book is a comprehensive guide to First Aid in the wilderness. It points out many injuries and illnesses that you'd commonly find while in the wilderness, and easy-to-follow explainations of what they are, what caused them, how to prevent them, and how to treat them. This is perfect for a Boy Scout or Girl Scout class in First Aid for an upcoming trip; as I use it as the text for the class I teach.
The only area I would say that it is lacking in is the serious, life-threatening injuries, ie cardiopulmonary arrest, tension pneumothorax, etc. However, to be perfectly honest, in the wilderness, injuries like that are very difficult to survive if you are not easily acessable by EMS. Additionally, those injuries are complex, and the treatments aren't always easy to do in the wilderness, much to the contrary, in fact. So understanding them might be important to the field leader, but I don't dwell on the severe injuries too much when I teach because they are difficult to understand, and the treatment is always "Get them to an ambulace and to a hospital as fast as you can."

I highly recommend this book for all Wilderness First aid, and for Mountaineering First Aid.

1 out of 5 stars Just Downright Dangerous.......2006-11-04

A listing of the errors and inaccuracies in this book would fill a small paperback in itself. If a person hasn't been trained in the basics of emergency medical science, some of the procedures advocated in this book could prove lethal to a patient if performed by an amateur. The book can best be characterized this way: even the author's method for forging prescriptions is obsolete.

If you're looking for a felony conviction, this is your book. If you're interested in sound do-it-yourself emergency healthcare procedures, try one of the books recommended by the other medical professionals who reviewed this one.

1 out of 5 stars Just do your EMT.......2006-03-10

Full of less than half information, just do your EMT Basic license at a local community college. Its a real qualification and you know that you met a standard. After all, people are not legos and in an emergency you want skills you can depend on...because thats exactly what you'll be doing.

1 out of 5 stars Full of half-truths and lies.......1999-04-14

I don't recommend this book. As with most books by survial author "Ragnar Benson" it is full of innaccuracies and half truths. There is some basic information on setting bones, stitching wounds, and other simple topics, but it is not very well addressed -- It's almost as if the author has no idea what he's talking about and is simply repeating urban knowledge thirdhand. As far as his information of how to aquire the various supplies, there are far better, easier, and more legal ways than he describes here. The misinformation presented here is likely to get you in trouble. "DITCH MEDICINE" is a far better book.

2 out of 5 stars Long on drug acquisition, short as a medical material.......1998-12-28

The author spends a lot of time telling you how to obtain drugs normally available only through doctors (and ranting about government control) while not spending a lot of time on the medical aspects that the title leads you to believe.

I suppose that his suggestions about forging prescriptions shouldn't be surprising when his other books tell readers how to gunrun for profit, acquire new id, build claymore mines, etc.

Sick or Not Sick? is designed to help EMS personnel develop rapid patient assessment skills. The program distills years of field experience into a workable formula that both inexperienced and experienced providers can use in the field. It teaches EMS personnel how to quickly collect information and discriminate the important from the unimportant to immediately offer initial care based upon his or her observations.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Decent but overpriced!.......2003-11-23

The contents are solid, but $32.00 is an outrageous sum for what amounts to an oversized brochure (big print, lots of white space and only 92 pages long). You will get much better value for your money by buying any of several EMT-B pocket references available. More content, lower price, and a much more convenient form factor. The AAOS should be ashamed of itself for gouging the profession like this.

5 out of 5 stars A Must have for EMS providers.......2000-04-15

This book should be read and practiced by every EMS provider. It provides an easy to understand guide to rapid assessment. In today's world EMS providers need to learn new ways to approach patient care quickly and effectively. This book will show you how to do that with confidence. It is an EMS must.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Pediatric Resource.......2007-06-13

This is the perfect (and portable) Pediatric sourcebook covering most pediatric concerns. I use this professionally as an emergency room physician. It is emminently comprehensive and readable, the layperson's Nelson's or Harriet Lane. I recommend Dr. Ryder's book enthusiastically.

5 out of 5 stars Good for Travel and Home.......2007-06-07

This book is a treasure chest of current medical advice for parents and grandparents. As a retired pediatrician, I have given a copy of this book to our children to use for themselves and the grandchildren. A friend's granddaughter had a reaction to peanuts and was immediately able to find advice in the book.
The advice is current, easy to find and understandable. It also suggests some medications to have with you when you travel with your children. I think all parents will find it helpful. James E. Jones MD

In an emergency, the last thing any parent needs is to have to scan through a table of contents or index, and then thumb through pages and pages of dense text looking for the CPR instructions. In A Sigh of Relief, help is a moment away. The back cover's emergency index leads to large, accurate graphics and easy-to-follow written instructions. Other sections include problem prevention, childhood illnesses, and drug identification. This is an excellent first-aid book to keep by the telephone (not far from the fire extinguisher). Oh yeah, it's got a place to write down emergency phone numbers, too.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference for the EMT.......2000-03-26

This text is traditionally seen in the classroom, however not all EMT classes utilize this text and some technicians may not be familiar with it. In essence, the text is designed to provide the necessary knowledge to become an Emergency Medical Technician.

Content includes basic physiology, medical terminology, patient assessment, and emergency interventions on the basic life support level. The book assumes no prior medical knowledge on the part of the reader and the information is presented in a clear and logical manner.

The text is also useful to the layman who would appredciate a more in depth approach to the recognition of medical emergencies and life saving interventions.
