Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten (Picture Puffins)
ASIN: 0140562737 |
Amazon.com
On the first day of kindergarten, Miss Bindergarten must prepare her classroom for her beloved students. This noble, whimsical teacher greets her dark, summertime-empty classroom with an explosion of color--a bouquet of fall leaves, a goldfish, rolled-up posters, and shoeboxes full of no-doubt-delightful surprises. Meanwhile, her young students get ready, too: "
Adam Krupp wakes up.
Brenda Heath brushes her teeth.
Christopher Beaker finds his sneaker." Author Joseph Slate matches each animal character with a letter of the alphabet, and readers can flip to the back to discover that Adam is an alligator, Brenda is a beaver, and Christopher is a cat--and so on, through the more obscure animals such as the quokka and the Uakari monkey. Youngsters will relish the scenes of school preparation, adorned by rhyming text: a mother iguana dragging her son Ian Lowe (who cries "I won't go!") out the front door, and the little vole Vicki Densel biting her pencil. And of course Miss Bindergarten is the kindergarten teacher we either remember fondly or wish we had. The final back-to-school classroom scene explodes with love and pride and the smell of freshly sharpened pencils. For kids who adore this book--and there are thousands--don't miss Joseph Slate and Ashley Wolff's second loving tribute to teachers and students, Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten. (Ages 4 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
It's the first day of kindergarten and Miss Bindergarten is hard at work getting the classroom ready for her twenty-six new students. Meanwhile, Adam Krupp wakes up, Brenda Heath brushes her teeth, and Christopher Beaker finds his sneaker. Miss Bindergarten puts the finishing touches on the room just in time, and the students arrive. Now the fun can begin! This rhyming, brightly illustrated book is the perfect way to practice the alphabet and to introduce young children to kindergarten.
"Multifaceted and appealing, this book can be enjoyed in many ways, at home and at school."

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-09-13
My daughter received this book for her 3rd birthday, and has loved it from the very start. Infact, since receiving this book she can not wait to go to kindy, which is still another year away. LOL A fun book that not only helps your child with the alphabet, but also gives him/her something to look forward to when the kindergarten days approach.
Too, too cute.......2007-08-05
This book made me wish I was going to Kindergarden. Very helpful for my granddaughter and now, for her school.
Great for getting ready for school.......2007-07-24
My daughter loves this book and it is good for talking about what the kids do to prepare for school and what the teacher does. Good for emphasizing self-help skills in preparing for the day.
grandma.......2007-01-03
this is the most adorable book and truly is my grandsons favorite. teaches lots of different needs.
miss bindergarten gets ready for kindergarten.......2006-08-29
beautiful illustrations filled with color and imagination, that the whole family will enjoy. Excellent tool for introducing a child to school for the first time and for getting any child excited about returning to school. Wonderful tool for parents in looking for a guide to what your child's progressive classroom should look like. Great tool for teachers, containing tested methods for engaging and instructing young children.

Ready, Set, Read!.......2006-08-04
I LOVE this book! This is by far one of the most useful literacy books for kindergarten that I have ever read! It is packed with fabulous activities! I would highly recommend it to all kindergarten teachers!!!
AWESOME TOOL FOR EMERGENT READERS.......2005-10-01
I have just started using this book, but it offers a great variety of tools and ideas young children need to prepare for reading. It ties together all of the different areas needed to prepare a child for reading. It covers all of the bases, it even has a listing with each activity to show you which skills will be included, for example, letter recognition, auditory or visual discrimination, matching,reading...An abundance of information for the price.
Tremendous book.......2000-09-09
In the 10 years I've been teaching kindergarten - I have not found a more useful book than Dr. Feldman's Ready, Set Read. I attended one of Dr. Feldman's conferences in the fall of last year and by January over half my kindergarten class was reading well and really enjoying the fun activities from the book - easy to use - obviously tested in the classroom - because they work - and not a lot of "fluff" with no meaning - also easy to work into any curriculum because it's not a "set" program - I can't say enough about her titles - they've really changed my teaching - thanks .
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
impromptu lesson planning bonus.......2007-09-25
This book has easily accessible lesson plans that develops useful social skills. It also serves incredibly well for impromptu lesson plans which can be expanded in other creative ways. good also for an advisory or with students struggling in terms of behavior within the school system.
Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 7-12.......2007-06-09
I love this book; It really encourages creative thinking and is a must for group work with adolescents. I highly recommend it!!!
Great Combo of Activities.......2007-05-14
Haven't used this in practice yet, but I read through most of the activies. This book offers a lot of great social skills activities that are easy to incoroporate in the classroom or for school counselors. You can easily pick and choose activities that might be useful in your own group sessions or adapt activities to your group goals. It could be improved by including more last session/wrap up ideas for closure. It could also implement additional processing questions so the user doesn't have to think to much to create his or her own.
Great Tool.......2007-01-13
This series of books are wonderful for students who lack social skills. I have shared the book's ideas with colleagues and all seem to enjoy the lessons provided.
This book was disappointing.......2007-01-03
The description said you could easily apply the skills and exercises at home, outside of the classroom environment, but it is clearly written for classroom use.
The author doesn't really explain what to do with each exercise either, it's seemed more like a list of suggestions or ideas than real activities. For instance they would say "come up with a story to show typical youngsters conflicting over a problem and give examples of how to resolve those problems without violence."
That's what I got the book for.... if I knew how to come up with scenerios like that and exercises on my own, I wouldn't need help.
I gove it 2 stars because there are a couple of worksheets included that do seem like they are useful practices, but other than that, this was a waste of money.

If Ready...Set...Read! were a movie, it would surely be a box-office hit with its all-star cast, including Little Bear, Morris the Moose, and Frog and Toad. This rich treasury of children's favorite stories, as well as poems, riddles, tongue-twisters, and hidden picture games, will delight and inspire every beginning reader. There's something for everyone in this diverse collection: Have a young poet in the house? How about a poem by Gwendolyn Brooks or Robert Louis Stevenson? Let the budding scientist discover "Our Earth in Space." The amateur comedian might pick up a few tips from the knock-knock jokes and riddles. And be prepared to untie some messy knots after the tongue-twister section: "Wendy went to rent one red room."
Ready...Set...Read! is a perfect introduction to many well-loved authors and illustrators, including Maurice Sendak, Else Holmelund Minarik, and Russell Hoban. Most importantly, this all-in-one collection, with its easy-to-read type, simple vocabulary, and variety of lively and colorful illustrations, will provide a jump-start to reading that will soon have children racing to the bookshelf for more.
Book Description
Created especially for children who are learning to read, this anthology contains renowned works with some of the best-loved characters in children's literature--including Else Holmelund Minarik and Maurice Sendak's Little Bear, Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad, and the madcap creations of Dr. Seuss. Also included is poetry by Eve Merriam, Lilian Moore and Gwendolyn Brooks; as well as stories, poems, riddles and word games.

Customer Reviews:
A Nice Collection, but NOT for Beginners - a review of "Ready... Set... Read!.......2007-02-08
I'm always fascinated by what people (apparently even educators) think of as a beginning reader. I think of a true beginner as one who is still sounding out and occasionally stumbling over simple words like: sat, is, and gives. A true beginner in my book also tires easily if there is too much text per page.
If this description fits your beginning reader, then I don't think this is the primer for you. The book is great --we really like it --but it's not a collection that a true beginner is going to come away from with a sense of accomplishment. It's just too hard.
For example, words you will find in this book are: gooey, idea, chocolate, melting, splattered, squirrel, heavens, noticed, beautiful, travels, spinning, everyone, telescope, throat, forehead, coughed and tongue. Having a child who is just about to turn 5 y.o. I can tell you that these are too difficult for him.
Another drawback is that several of the stories have too many words per page for new readers. The Frog and Toad story and the non-fiction piece are prime examples.
That said, if you sole aim is not to necessarily purchase a primer, I would advise you to check this book out. It has a good selection of stories, poems, jokes, pictogram thingies, and even a non-fiction piece about the solar system. Enough selection that you ought to be able to judge what sort of story your child might be drawn to.
Four Conditional Stars. [B+]. A very nice hardback book that offers some great selections such as 'Sheep in a Jeep' and 'Frog and Toad' and 'Little Bear'. Some of the poems are lame, but some are nice. The artwork is varied. The writing is varied. In general, a Very Good Read-aloud.
Not a true beginners primer. My estimate would be a book leveled at first to second graders.
For much younger than listed.......2007-01-23
Though the stories, jokes, and poems in this book are quite good, there is no way they are age appropriate for the older children in the 4-8 group where they are placed. I bought this for my 6 year old based on another review that said how wonderful this book was...I was disappointed. It is more appropriate for my 1 year old. There is little text in the book per page and the illustrations are ordinary rather than exceptional. If you want funny jokes and poems, try the Grin and Giggle Book, and if you really want funny stories, invest in the entire Frog and Toad collection for about the price of this single book.
Ready...Set... Read! The Begining Reader's Treasury.......2006-10-26
I love this book! Both my kids (now 15 and 11) loved this book, so much so that we can't pass it on to my niece because it has such sentimental value. I guess I'm now saving it for grand kids (scary thought). Anyway, it truly is perfect for emerging readers with varying reading levels and most importantly varying subject matters. I'm ordering one now for my niece and I know she will treasure her copy as much as we do ours.
A great book for beginning readers........2006-03-27
A wide variety of stories, full of colorful pictures.
Accessible vocabulary for beginning readers...highly motivating and fun to read.
Good collection for early readers.......2001-07-08
I bought this book for my son who is in first grade. He has grown with this book - from the stories where some of the words are replaced by pictures, to the riddles and jokes, to complete stories of Frog and Toad and Morris the Moose. Most importantly - he picks up this book now and reads for pleasure.
My one complaint is that the book seems to be organized backwards - the easier reading is in the back, the harder is in the front.
The same applies to the Ready-Set-Read and Laugh anthology. Good collections and my kids enjoy reading them.

Builds a Firm Foundation for Reading.......2006-09-07
My first reaction when I received this package in the mail was total shock! I was very surprised at how big and heavy the package was and even more surprised when I opened it and found that there really wasn't any filler. It was all Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read material!
As I started opening the package, I was impressed with how logically and simply the entire program was laid out and packaged. Every piece of the program seemed to fit seemlessly with all the other pieces in order to make a well thought out program.
Another thing that was really nice is that the arrival of the Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read program was a complete surprise to my almost four year old daughter (in the picture) and she was completely blown away. She got more and more excited as we began unpacking it.
It's really nice to see your child excited about letters!
What I liked...
There is a huge amount of materials within this program and everything is so well integrated that my daughter didn't even realize she was learning... In her mind she's just playing!
As anyone with children will tell you, children learn the most at this age when learning is disguised as play. Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read is the best resource I've seen that shows you how to "play" with your child and learn letters at the same time.
Another aspect of Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read that I really liked is that the program is systematically divided into two sections:
The first sections teaches kids to recognize the letters (both upper and lower case) through the use of videos, computer games, workbook, blocks, games, etc. so that there is a lot of different ways to re-enforce the concepts. Once they've thoroughly learned their letter names, then they move to the second section.
The second section of the program teaches young children about letter sounds. As you know, letter sounds are the foundation of reading and it's a difficult concept for some children. Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read uses an innovative concept called "Alphabet Actions" to help children learn and remember letter sounds and put them in context with words. My daughter thinks this is the best thing since sliced bread... In fact, now she's teaching her older brother and sister the movements!
With such fresh and creative techniques, colorful and engaging materials, entertaining and fun videos and games, and progress rewards build in... what's not to like? This program really has it all!
The Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read program has everything you need to help your child build a good foundation for reading.
The Down Side...
The only real downside with the Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read program is the price. It doesn't come cheap... but then again, how do you put a price on your child's learning and how much it will help them for the rest of their life?
I think of it this way...
If you enroll your child in ballet lessons, it will set you back about $30 per lesson here in Kentucky. Eight lessons (a normal session) plus clothes is over $250... and they'll probably never be professional ballerinas.
If you plan to enroll your child in karate, that will set you back about the same. What do you think your child's chances are of becoming a karate champ?
There's also piano, gymnastics, soccer, etc. You get the idea.
In my view, none of these things could possible compete with the idea of helping a child build a firm foundation for their future learning. As a parent, I feel it's my responsibility to get this one right to the best of my ability.
In my opinion, Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read is well worth the price. My daughter has already gotten so much out of it... and we're still using it!
In Summary...
In conclusion, I would highly recommend the Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read program for any child who needs to learn their letters, letter sounds, or phonemic awareness. It is the best program on the market today for building that solid foundation... bar none.
I don't think you'll find a better, complete system for getting younger children on the road to reading than Hooked On Phonics Get Ready to Read.

I brought this for my son who is a Diego fan and he enjoyed this book a great deal.
great reading helper.......2007-01-10
This book really helps young children learn to read. My son is 3 yrs. old, and he does a really good job recognizing the pictures that are placed throughout the book. He loves Diego, and I was actually surprised when we began reading the book. I pointed to the different animals like armadillo, and he knew exactly what it was. These books help children learn words through the pictures....I bought a total of four of these books, and they are great!!
