Best Reads on Birthing Mechanics.......2007-10-11
This book has the best chapters on Sexuality and Pregnancy as well as the mechanics of birthing that I've read -- and I've been through quite a few books recently. I would highly recommend it to any reader interested in a sound knowledge of the "how-to" of birth.
Some outdated views, but still worth it for the techniques.......2007-09-20
Ok, so I went in reading this with a grain of salt (as was advised) and I see why. The statistics are outdated and there is one part about a baby's possible future resentment toward a mom who chose a C-section...um...yeah. That had me laughing outloud and then I knew I must read the book solely for the techniques.
I have to say, at 38 weeks pregnant, and having extremely painful Braxton Hicks contractions, the relaxation techniques and exercises you can do with a partner or husband, have been a huge help! I love that they do a lot of coaching the coach, too. Right now, my husband basically reads the instructions in a soft voice and it's so comforting through some really painful times.
I love that they touch on the EMOTIONAL progress of the stages of labor, as well, so that that you can get control and will be able to know where you are in the different stages of labor.... So as to avoid getting to the hospital too soon or too late. It is really encouraging about listening to your own body and not going totally on emotions, too.
I just caution you, it's biased against hospitals as well as toward epidurals at all. There are a lot of happy and healthy babies out there delivered by a mom who had an epidural, so it's a mystery why this is the ONLY way to do it right. You must just go into birthing with confidence that you can do this naturally, but knowing there are things that come up and to make sure you keep asking questions. No woman is a failure when it comes to delivering a baby. I just don't buy in to doing it one way. Things happen. Sometimes C-sections save lives. Just be informed, you know?
Best book for preparing on a natural childbirth.......2007-09-06
I loved this book the BEST book to prepare for a natural childbirth. Some things you might want to read quick and not to seriously, just use your own common sense and take the best things out of this book. and ... I had a natural childbirth!
Get Informed.......2007-08-24
You owe it to yourself and your baby. How you bring your baby into the world will affect your child for the rest of his or her life. This book is an education on natural birthing and the Bradley Method. It explains all the changes (mental, physical, hormonal, etc) that a pregnant woman goes through, what she needs in labor and how the coach (usually husband) can help.
After reading the book and taking additional Bradley Childbirth Classes, the mystery of birth and fear of the unknown has lifted. I feel totally prepared and ready to welcome our little one.
Loved this book!.......2007-07-29
I read quite a few books during my pregnancy and found that this one, more than any other, helped to truly ease my fears about the pain of labor. I was actually still reading it when I went into labor and found it to be an empowering, informative and comforting resource. I was able to delivery my son without pain medications and felt at ease (without fear) throughout the entire labor and delivery process. I truly believe it contributed greatly to the wonderful birth experience we had.

STUDENT OF THE SUBJECT.......2004-02-02
This a really good book to have as well. I still recommed other books. This should be in your connection as well. At first, I didn't want read/buy it/take it of the library. I'm glad I finally saw it and bought, currently reading it. I'm really enjoying it. Before I read this I read Zita West's newest book on Fertitly and Conception: Complete Guide on Pregnant. Which was wonderful as well. Thank you.
Also recommended: DK/Johnsons Mother and Baby, Carol Cooper, MD, Editor, Paula M Elbirt, MD, Constutant.
Pretty pictures don't cut it........2004-01-03
I enjoyed this book, however, it has too many glossy, unrealistic pictures that take the place of meaningful text. I found the book the Natural Pregnancy Book by Aviva Jill Romm to be much more helpful, insightful and thorough.
PS. Kate Winslet is only in the introduction, a good one at that.
Wonderful Book.......2002-12-03
I truly enjoyed this book and found it to be invaluable during my twin pregnancy. It is a good resource guide with beautiful photographs; and it is written without the self-righteous tone found in other *holistic-oriented* books. Although I'm not an advocate for the use of the term "natural" (which I think is a rather subjective and broad term), I found the suggested complementary therapies for various pregnancy and post partum related conditions extremely helpful.

Enhancing the Experience with Alternative Therapies.......2002-08-12
Zita West works as a midwife and acupuncturist. Over the years she has observed a growing interest in holistic remedies. This is quite important during pregnancy as women are seeking natural products, non-invasive treatments and drug-free methods of pain relief that will not harm their babies.
She has organized her book, trimester by trimester, so you can follow along and not miss an important aspect of your pregnancy. After all, once the first trimester is over, you are onto the second! In fact, if you are like me, you are reading all these books before even thinking about getting pregnant. Strangely, they seem to be a great form of birth control.
Pregnancy is not as easy as it looks. Sure, for most people, it is easy to get pregnant, but what do you do then?
If you are like many women who want to plan out their lives to the very second in order to taste life to the fullest, you will enjoy this book as it gives detailed information, comprehensive nutrition plans and exercise suggestions. Along with all the information you really need to know, there are also tips on how to boost your immunity or how to minimize morning sickness.
This book also explains your baby's development.
The Contents include:
Planning for Conception & Pregnancy - how to improve fertility, avoid pollution and reduce stress.
Nutrition - Ideally you should be at peak health before pregnancy.
Boosting Immunity - How to eat for health and boost the immune system with pressure therapy.
Illness during Pregnancy - What do you do if you get a cold and can't take any of the remedies you took before you were pregnant.
The First Trimester - You may want to consult other book for the week by week pictures, but this gives a basic overview of your baby's development. Nutrition, exercise and common problems are discussed in each section.
The Second Trimester - A discussion of heartburn and Anemia. Discussion on how acupuncture, massage and yoga can help backache. How you can use hydrotherapy to help reduce varicose veins. What about depression?
The Third Trimester - Sleeplessness, Skin Problems, Stress & Anxiety, High Blood Pressure, Leg cramps, How to get a Breech baby to turn, Respirator problems.
Preparation for Labor & Baby - Detailed discussion of the Placenta, how to detoxify the body, the last few weeks of pregnancy, preparing your mind, natural pain relief, stages of labor.
Postpartum Period - Ok, this section makes you want to get pregnant. It is a conspiracy. Here they tell you about the day-by-day developments and a contented mother holds her child and looks so loving and happy. There is a discussion of Postpartum exercise, nutrition and how to solve problems in this time. Breast-feeding problems are discussed. You might want to choose acupuncture, homeopathy or western herbalism.
Complimentary Therapies
If you are going to take the advice in this book about herbs, also consider purchasing: Natural Health Magazine Complete Guide to Safe Herbs. This book recommends a tea with chamomile, but it is well known that "large doses" of chamomile are not good for pregnant women and could increase the risk of complications. The tea they recommend also contains fennel, and I have also read that fennel is not for use during pregnancy. Instead, perhaps try ginger, which they say is safe in small amounts for pregnant women.
Just use caution with all that Chamomile tea! If you take ANY herbs during pregnancy, consult with the Natural Health book or ask your doctor first.
The Foreword by Kate Winslet is also well worth the price of this book! What a hoot!

Book Description
The classic guide to gentle birth that revolutionized the way we welcome our children into the world.
⢠The first book to express what mothers have always known: babies are born complete human beings with the ability to experience a full range of emotions.
⢠Shows how gentle lighting, a quiet atmosphere, and a warm bath allow a newborn to ease the transition from womb to world without trauma or fear.
⢠New translation overseen by the author himself; also includes a new author preface.
Birth without Violence revolutionized the way we perceive the process of birth, urging us to consider birth from the infant's point of view. Why must a child emerge from the quiet darkness of the womb into a blaze of blinding light and loud voices? Why must an infant take its first breath in terror, hanging upside down as its vulnerable spine is jerked straight? Why must the infant be separated from its mother after spending nine months inside her nourishing body?
Examining alternatives to technocentric approaches to childbirth, this classic text shows us how we can create an environment of tranquillity in which to welcome our children: a relaxed mother, gentle lighting, soothing atmosphere, and a warm bath that mirrors the child's prenatal surroundings. Dr. Leboyer's simple techniques show us how a birth without violence has far-reaching implications for improving the quality of human life physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Extraordinary book- a must to read! From A. de Salverte not by Joy.......2007-06-14
This is the best book I have read on all the 20 or more pregnancy books I have read recently ! It is a masterpiece! This French man brought to the world an amazing, most touching, revolutionary way to honor the sacredness of childbirth. This book has brought to me reverence for the baby's needs, and has hlep me understand the importance to create a sacred space for the baby and the mother.
Thank you Frederick LeBoyer for your incredible contribution to this world!
Good, but get the original..........2005-11-14
There is no doubt that to call this book "revolutionary" is but an understatement, but the new translation doesn't quite capture the full effect of the original. This "revised" edition can be said to be a "re-translation" rather than a "revision."
Pregnant or not, read this book !.......2005-04-16
A single 30 year-old male, I saw a small notice that Dr. LeBoyer was to give a talk about "birthing" to our comunity. Not at all interested in the subject,(geez I didn't even have a girlfriend!) I only went to see this guy because he had presided over 10,000 births! If he had done that many anythings(like knitted sweaters) I would probably also would have gone!
When he entered the room, I was surprised how short he was, and how handsome. I was moved by what he had to say. A year later I read the book and tears were streaming down my cheeks. Such was its profound truth and beauty. Never before or since has reading had this effect on me.
1979 I was the mid-wife for my daughter's birth, and followed the book's advice exactly. At thirty minutes old she was immersed in the water, her clenched fingers relaxed, the vernix disappeared, the wrinkled skin filled out, her whole body relaxed, she looked straight into my eyes and smiled!
Now this same daughter is pregnant with her first child and I am buying a copy of Leboyer's book for her.
I recommend this book to everyone, everywhere.
The Author, Leboyer, Has Delivered More Than 10,000 Babies.......2005-02-28
This book will give parents-to-be techniques for easing the birth trauma and helping the new human being to start life without pain, confusion, and fear. This book is revolutionizing the way we bring our children into the world. The book is affordable and available on the Amazon Marketplace for as low as one cent.

Customer Reviews:
informative, sometimes biased.......2004-08-18
I thought this book was informative, especially when it laid out in no uncertain terms the difficulties of becoming pregnant for women over 35. I also feel it has a great deal of information, especially homeopathic remedies which the reader will not find anywhere else. I object to a bias in the book in favor of career professionals. The book explains that women have to work, which may not be the case and does not link enough the obesity epidemic to the mass exodus of women out of the home, to which it is directly related. Poor eating habits and the mass consumption of convenience foods has led to the prevalence of obesity in our society, as has a general lack of respect for what generations of women used to do in the home, prepare healthy meals. While the book does touch on obesity's relationship to infertility, it fails to adequately explore the reasons for this situation.
Interesting, informative, and optimistic.......2001-07-31
This book had some great information that I hadn't read in other similar titles. I was most interested in the sections on movement therapies such as yoga and qi gong, although I wish there had been more specific information such as particular yoga poses that are beneficial. Many times in this book, the reader is told to consult a professional (yoga teacher, naturopath, accupuncturist) rather than being told what they can specifically do on their own. I suppose that is the most prudent course. Still, this book exposed me to some new ideas and I ended up feeling more optimistic than I had before I read it about my chances to conceive.

Customer Reviews:
Very nice..........2007-04-15
for the women who desire a drug-free home birth. Very encouraging and informative. Not for the mommy's who desire epidurals and medical assistance.
A wonderful book!!.......2003-08-10
I suffered PTSD after having my first child in hospital. I was so damaged by the experience that I decided to have any more children. But unexpectedly I fell pregnant 6 years later, I was terrified. I was so relived when I read this book, there were other women who had been through the same thing! It gave me confidence and although nervous I decided to have a home birth with the aid of a midwife. It was fantastic, my daughter was born on the sofa with no trouble!! I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who has experienced trauma in a hospital birth and are looking for an alternative for the next one. Inspirational and informative, a must read!!
Useful book, references and list of contacts.......2002-12-11
I enjoyed this book, and it answered my questions thoroughly and with solid documentation about the safety and risks of home birth, birth centers, and hospitals. All of the references and contacts I have researched further have been accurate, as well as helpful. It's a woman-centered, baby-centered, and family-centered book. It gave me a lot to think about and the courage to follow my instincts, as well as to know when it is and isn't safe to give birth out-of-hospital. I highly recommend it for anyone considering whether or not to go a less-medicalized route for her next birth. There is lots of information out there about how to give birth in a hospital setting, but this is one of the few sources of information about giving birth in a more traditional way. Even if one chooses to birth in a hospital, I think there is valuable information here that isn't found other places about why you might want to say no to a routine intervention, how to relax during labor, reasons for certain hospital protocols, birthing positions, having older children present, etc. I've read it several times during more than one pregnancy. It's thought-provoking, encouraging and empowering. I hope it helps you, too.
A book laced with blatant guilt inducing propaganda........2002-10-19
Kitzenger suggests she is going to provide the facts so you can make an informed decision about choosing to give birth at home, or in a birthing centre. The factual information she shares with us, `how to prepare for a home birth', `choosing a birthing partner' etc. is however laced with blatant guilt inducing propaganda.
"Home birth works best for women who want to cope with pain, rather than hand the pain over to be reduced or eradicated by professionals.
Unfortunately, her arguments are ridiculously one sided. Surely there must be one person in existence who had a joyous hospital experience (e.g. ME)? If there is Kitzenger did not track her down. Instead she shares with us every hospital birthing horror story, and to balance this out, every joyous home birth story.
I am sure there are better books on the market, to help you make an informed birthing decision.

Family Planning the Natural Way.......2003-02-27
For someone looking for a natural, cheap alternative for birth control (or looking to conceive) this is a comprehensive, clearly explained, and an overall excellent book. Natural Family Planning is NOT the rhythm method, and this book clearly explains why. It also explains in detail the woman's menstual cycle and its various stages, also offering sample charts and questions and answers. I highly recommend it!
better NFP books..........2000-10-02
Dr. Roetzer (sic) is an NFP pioneer in Austria. This book is old, and hard to get, however. There are several other good alternatives, however, like CCL's "Art of Natural Family Planning" by Kippley, and Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility".

The most upsetting challenge a new parent can face is an infant who won't stop crying. Before panic sets in, Mom and Dad can find a tried-and-tested solution in this commonsensical guide. They'll learn to interpret their baby's cries and body language. They'll learn about bonding, and how parent's moods and behavior affect an infant's. Among the many natural ways to soothe a baby suggested here are massage, homeopathy, and reflexology--as well as music and other calming sounds, a placid bedroom environment, and natural remedies for diaper rash, colic, and teething pain. The reassuring advice covers everything from how to determine a child's personality type to how to hold, handle, bathe, change, and feed an infant.

If you DON'T have a pregnancy book, you may find the info in here useful. I didn't find anything in here that was new info, though. I would have returned if it had cost anymore.
