Book Description
very woman who's had a baby knows how difficult it is to take off the extra weight, despite those unrealistic articles promising that you'll be back into your pre-pregnancy clothes within six weeks. Postpartum dieting can actually add weight and slow down the metabolism, making it virtually impossible to shed those stubborn pounds. Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell-After Pregnancy shows women why it's so difficult to lose the weight quickly, and why, if women don't adopt a sensible eating and exercise plan (as opposed to crash dieting), they will probably never take off the extra pounds. Whether you had a baby five days ago, or five years ago, bestselling author Debra Waterhouse shows women how to shed those hard-to-budge post-partum pounds, sensibly and healthfully.
Customer Reviews:
Depressing and discouraging!.......2007-04-27
I hated this book! I found the author's cutesy vocabulary and lighthearted "oh well" attitude in response to quite possibly never getting my body back to be nothing less than infuriating. Her description of waving a little white flag to 30 billion fat cells, and how they "protect their precious goldmine of fat" oblivious to months of exercise, and increasingly more stubborn with dieting, is obnoxious as it is frustrating.
I felt that she was telling me certain goals are hopeless and that the only way to cope was to throw away my old clothes.
I know that isn't true because (it was a tight fit), but I wore them home from the hospital! And I know I can improve from there.
Don't listen to her! You can do it!
I found that "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" was much more liberating, and will help me prepare for life and possible pregnancies down the road.
Awesome Book!.......2006-08-26
This book is perfect for the mother that wants to lose weight the HEALTHY way. No gimicky diets. Debra Waterhouse really helps you accept your post-pregnancy body and love it for the healthy baby it produced. She doesn't just focus on losing the weight, but regaining a new appreciation for your body and your self. The author doesn't make you feel guilty or build up unrealistic goals. I just had my son 3 months ago and picked up this book for a healthy way to lose the baby fat. After reading it and starting on Debra's PEACE plan, I have a new love of my body and am beginning to have a healthy relationship with food.
Very Informitive.......2005-09-19
This book was very informitive and helpful in understanding what the average woman's body goes through after pregnancy. I was surprised that it takes so long to get back into shape after giving birth and according to this book there is no getting into shape a few months after. Its a waiting game - which I guess is a little disappointing but the truth helps.
The most useful book I read about pregnancy weight loss.......2005-06-26
I lost 40 lbs of pregnancy weight in 3 months after my baby was born. I was nervous about my weight gain for this pregnancy (why is everyone else just gaining 25 or 30?) and was ready to accept that "you add 10 lbs for each baby" mentality. I'm the type of person that gains weight easily if I don't watch what I eat, and had never lost the extra weight I gained thru dieting alone. I was very thankful for this book. First and foremost it gave me confidence about myself. It's OK to be fat after giving birth!!! It's such a simple common sense but when you're flying high on hormone and busy with a newborn, it's hard to see yourself in the mirror and still look 6 months pregnant. The 2nd most helpful part is DON'T even think about dieting or exercising in the first 6 weeks post partum. Some women rush into things but the book emphasizes recovering well from childbirth. I completely agree with it. And I patiently waited 7 weeks before I started to exercise, even after that I didn't overdo it. About 20 min a day, 3 days a week. I didn't go on any special diet. I followed normal portions for myself and eat healthy (again, this is just common sense but I would've be desperately try all sorts of crazy dieting fads to lose these 40 lbs if i hadn't read this book).
I wont' lie, I still hated to see my body in the mirror for the first 2 months, but with the explanation from this book about fat cells, and the self esteem I gained, I had a very good recovery, no post partum depression or baby blues even though I was up 20 hours a day. I want every pregnant woman to read it before childbirth (after childbirth you'll have no time, trust me). It gets rid of a lot of myth, and will get you on the right path to losing weight in a healthy way.
worked for me!.......2005-06-05
After the birth of my 3rd child, I was concerned about losing the extra 25 pounds I had gained. This book really changed my life in that it gave great tips and information that I didn't find anywhere else - about food journals, duration of exercise, and when to start trying to lose the weight. All her information was right on, and when I followed her suggestions, the pounds melted off so quickly that everyone around me was amazed. Don't get me wrong, it took a lot of hard work, but after reading this book, I realized that if I worked hard for 2 or 3 months, starting at 3 months postpartum, that I would see the results I wanted. After 2 months of hard work, the 25 pounds were long gone, and I felt really great about my accomplishments.

Customer Reviews:
Next steps........2007-04-30
After the stillbirth of our first child, we received or bought quite a few "Dead Baby Books" as we jokingly called them. Trying Again was the gift of a friend who knew that because we had lost our child to severe preeclampsia/HELLP, we would really struggle with whether we should try again in the future.
Trying Again is a reasonably good summary at the issues facing couples in a situation like ours, and special issues relevant going into a pregnancy that we know will be high risk. I have a minor frustration since all of these books about high risk family discuss the impact on the husband and the other children, and never seem to put any focus on the woman's career. It's often hard enough to be pregnant and work, let alone going into a pregnancy knowing that you may well have to stop working very early in order to go to term.
I would recommend the book for anyone who has lost a child. I think that many of the emotional issues are relevant whether you believe that your loss was a one-off event or whether you know already that you are high risk. However, I think women who have just learned the hard way that they are high risk will probably get the most out of the book.
very informative.......2007-04-06
This book was very factual and informative. It covered many topics beginning at dealing with the loss and moving onto the birth of your next baby.
Great book!.......2007-03-08
This book has been so informative and such a peace of mind to me! It has been wonderful to read a book that is geared toward women like me! I will defintely be recommending this book to others who I feel it will help.
This Book is HIGHLY recommended.......2007-01-11
All I have to say is this book says it all. I would be thinking alot of what the book said, and I would highlight it and take it into the doctor with me...and it was nice to know that others thought the same things.
Not recommended for someone who has experienced a single loss.......2007-01-10
I think this is a very good book for some women, but I would not recommend it for the couple who has experienced one loss and are not at greater than average risk for experiencing another. I was also dissappointed that the book did not contain very much original writing, instead it was mostly a compilation of interviews. Most of the women profiled had experienced multiple losses. I have experienced one loss and the last thing I want to imagine is going through this 3 or 4 times more! If you have experienced multiple losses, and are looking for "honest" rather than sugar-coated answers to your concerns, this may be the book for you. But, if you are not at a greater than average risk, and want to focus more on the positives of "trying again," I would look for another book.

"A 'must-have' guide for the devastated couple dealing with the many questions and fears that occur with a subsequent pregnancy." --Candace Hurley, Executive Director/Founder, Sidelines National Support Network
For a woman who has experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of an infant, conceiving another child can be fraught with mixed emotions. This guide, filled with up-to-date medical information and written by a woman who herself experienced a successful pregnancy after the loss of her first baby, can help women cope with their anxiety. It offers guidance for women asking such questions as: * Why did it happen--and how can I make sure it doesn't happen again? * Will my next pregnancy be considered high-risk? * How long should I wait before getting pregnant again? * What can I expect at prenatal exams? * Will I ever be able to love another baby as much as I love the one I lost?
Pregnancy after a loss can be a time of great emotional upheaval--but also, a time of healing and hope. With this sensible, sensitive guide, women can put their minds at ease--and learn to look forward to the future as they make peace with the past.
"Compassionate and comprehensive." --Perry-Lynn Moffitt, coauthor of A Silent Sorrow: Pregnancy Loss
* Contains up-to-the-minute medical advice and information
* Unlike other books about pregnancy loss that focus solely on the grieving process, Pregnancy After a Loss helps women to prepare, both psychologically and physically, for a new pregnancy
Customer Reviews:
Made us feel hopeful again.......2007-09-29
I am so sorry if you are reading this review. You are either walking in my same shoes or know someone who is.
After the loss of our first son at 36 weeks (because of a blood clot in his umbilical cord). I started reading this book about a month after his death. We wanted to try to have another baby, but needed to deal with grief, fear and everything else that comes with the loss of a child. I was able to get pregnant 8 weeks after his death. This book helped my husband and I cope with the next pregnancy and actually have hope that our next child would make it here alive. The book is detailed, comforting, hopeful and reminds you that your feelings are totally normal. It addresses fear, jealousy, dealing with others who don't know how to handle you and your subsequent pregnancy. It also addresses what it's like to actually have another child. Once you are home with a live baby you go through a whole new set of emotions. I bought this book for family and friends so they could try to understand what we were going through.
I am so pleased to say that 8 months of reading this book...we had a beautiful baby girl. The book really helped me through a very high risk and scary pregnancy. I still refer to it when I am having a bad day missing my little boy so much, but loving my little girl so much.
Good luck to you in starting the journey of a subsequent pregnancy after a devastating loss.
This book saved my life........2007-09-04
There are no words to describe the loss of a child. But when I read this book shortly after my first son was stillborn, I felt as though 'someone' understood. I was alone, hurting, unable to function...and there was this book...and she understood me! It gave me hope when I thought all hope was gone. Then I became pregnant again, and it guided me through, once again. As I had read and reread the pages. When I lost my second son, I felt even more alone than I had in the begining. Reading the parts of the book on grief and reading the section on Husband's to my own husband, I felt hope again. And I pray that I will be able to read it once again.
I recommend this book to everyone who goes through a loss. I will admit though, as some of the others said, this book is more geared to women who have had later losses. There are some chapters and situations that might not apply to someone with an early loss. Even though emotionally everything is exactly the same.
But for me, after suffering 2 early miscarriages and two late second trimester losses...it was a lifesaver!! And I will continue to recommend it to others.
Extremely Beneficial.......2007-05-26
After experiencing a pregnancy loss at 20 weeks, I needed help dealing with the pain associated with it. I had trouble even comprehending getting pregnant again. This book was amazing. It helped to hear other womens' stories of loss and how they coped. I am happy to report I am now the proud mom to a beautiful and healthy baby girl. I highly recommend this book to anyone put in this horrible situation.
Great after stillbirth.......2007-03-25
First of all, let me say that I can understand why those who have had miscarriages might not find this book to be as useful as someone who had a stillbirth might. It does seem to be more geared towards women dealing with a stillbirth. As someone who has gone through the latter, I think this book is so helpful and inspirational. I bought it within a month of my second pregnancy ending in stillbirth, and then and even now it has given me so much reassurance. It is pretty common for women who have suffered even one loss (even if they have other living children) to feel as if they might never be able to have another living baby. This book is packed with real life accounts of women who have suffered pregnancy losses and gone on to have healthy babies. It is also filled with practical information on how to decide when to try to conceive again, how to decide if you should stay with the same doctor and advice for seeking out a new one if you decide to go that route, advice for how to answer delicate questions (such as when you are pregnant again and a stranger asks you if this will be your first child), and has sections divided up for each trimester and deals with the issues in each - for example, in the first trimester section there is the issue of when and how to tell people that you are expecting again. There is also a section for high-risk pregnancies as well. Everything in this book is balanced with realism, the pros and cons of either side of any issue, and most importantly, personal accounts by women who have been through a loss and gone through another pregnancy. For someone who has had a pregnancy loss, sometimes the most helpful thing is someone who really "gets it". This book is filled with advice by lots of women who do.
Great book, but not for everyone.......2007-01-24
I love how this book really seem to know exactly how I feel while dealing with my third trimester loss. I however am not impressed with the way the author assumes we will all continue to see an OB (as apposed to a midwife) and give birth in a typical hospital setting and go through all of the invasive interventions (that can contribute to complications during pregnancy and birth) that comes with OB care and hospital births. I know it depends on your loss; when and how it happened, but not all miscarriages, stillbirths and infant deaths are the same. Though this book is largely based on her personal experience, it would have been nice to know there are less mainstream options available.
Book Description
"An exceptional book that I enthusiastically recommend to everyone whose life has been touched by the death of a baby." Pat Stauber, RN, MSW, Bereavement Coordinator, North Shore Medical Center, Miami, Florida
Your child's death is like losing a part of yourself. . .
This special book speaks to those who have lost a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, sudden infant death and termination of pregnancy. It is also for the caregivers who help them through this difficult time. The voices of other parents who have suffered the devastation of their baby's death are heard throughout this warmly written, insightful book.
Part One guides parents through the experience of bereavement, from shock to a time of renewal and coping. Hannah Lothrop gently suggests what has helped other parents in this situation and might help you: ideas that are both comforting and practical for working through grief, shared with compassion and understanding.
Part Two provides specific information for caregivers in the hospital and those providing care for the family. These caregivers may include hospital staff, ministers, childbirth educators, funeral directors and support-group members. An extensive resources section helps parents identify additional sources of support.
Help, Comfort & Hope after Losing Your Baby in Pregnancy or the First Year can help parents consecrate their precious memories of this pregnancy, this baby. And with empathy and first-hand knowledge, Hannah Lothrop also helps bereaved parents start an important healing process that resolves grief into acceptance.

A must-buy for anyone who's lost a baby.......2002-02-03
I didn't know what to do with myself when my son died on Jan. 15, 2002. I still am having a huge amount of trouble, but this book is helping me take steps forward even though part of me does not want to. I have purchased many loss books and this one is the best for practical advice. It helps you feel less alone, offers you ideas on what you will go through (all of which you need) but also gives you practical ideas on what to do to help yourself through this horribly difficult time. It is hands down, one of the best books I bought. If you buy only one loss book, buy this one.
Help, Comfort & Hope after Losing your Baby in Pregnancy or.......2000-01-28
This is the best book on the topic of perinatal loss I have read. It is a guide through the grieving process not only for the bereaved parents but also for caretakers, friends and others. This book can help parents make decisions during a time when they may not be able to make decisions or when they not know what their rights and options regarding their precious babies are. It also validates the bereaved parents' feelings, since parents often feel isolated during their grieving process over their child who died before he/she ever lived on this earth. Other parents share their experiences and you realize you are not alone. An exellent book that I will recommend to everybody who has lost a baby or who knows somebody who has lost a baby.

Customer Reviews:
It's ok.......2007-09-22
This book was fast and easy to read. It all sounds like it would work great but the only problem I found was when I got to the menu part it seems as if I would ALWAYS be shopping for my next meal. I can't afford to buy a little of this and a little of that to just make 1 meal. My husband was willing to eat the meals as well because they sound so yummy. Only problem is our fridge would be packed full if we bought enough food to last us through the week of meals. We would probably be broke and we would have left over half used items going to waste. We now just use the book to pick out meals that sound good and use it as a cookbook idea for the night. I hope it works well for others but it just doesn't fit into my lifestyle right now.
Forget this book!.......2007-06-19
Maybe the food is great; maybe this program works. I'll never find out. I will have two very small children (two under two!), a job, and a husband. Funds are limited, but not nearly as much as time will be. And who cooks food for six (esp. breakfast and lunch!) when she's really only feeding one or two people (while my toddler has a healthy appetite, he doesn't eat adult portions)? I thought that this book would be helpful, but I consider the money that I spent on it to have been wasted.
Good advice and recipes but Holy expensive diet! .......2007-02-12
This plan works. Like another reviewer I was able to do it for a week and lost 2 lbs. Then I went back to work and it became impossible to keep up with. Here's why:
The plan is split up into three phases, the first phase is supposedly "super easy" to prepare foods. Every day you make foods, and while easy to prepare they still require cooking and preparing multiple recipes per day. Not all of these foods are things that you can eat throughout the day if you're working either, unless you have a stove and blender at the office. Eventually you are preparing an average of 4 recipes per day plus all the other non-recipe foods you have to assemble and eat.
The other main complaint I have is that this is super expensive if you follow it exactly as the author recommends. Every day you have totally new foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner and three snacks. This will require you to purchase every known dried fruit separately and assorted dried fruits. You will purchase every whole grain product ever made, including whole grain pretzels and peanut butter filled whole grain pretzels.
The nutrition recommendations are great, she suggests lots of healthy snacks that you can work into a daily habit, and there are tons of nutritious recipes. Overall the plan is not practical if you plan to do anything other than cook recipes for your diet during the course of a day. However, I would still buy the book for its nutritional tips and philosophy.
Not realistic.......2006-11-29
The recipes are all fine and good but they require a gigantic shopping list and cooking for 4. Not realistic. I have a 5 month old and have lost the weight but not with the help of this book. Eat less exercise more but don't deprive yourself of anything.
Wasn't for me........2006-11-10
A great plan for a new mom with a nanny AND a chef. I hardly have the time to prepare one meal, much less six!

Excellent book for pursuing plastic surgery.......2006-08-03
This is a great book if you are thinking about any kind of body plastic surgery. It has great descriptions and pictures. I highly recommend this book.
Fabulous.......2006-02-25
The book is only superceded by it's author! Dr. Hurwitz is a genius, and truly cares about his patients. I have many health problems and see many physicians, but none seem to care about or love what they do as he does. He is a perfectionist, and studies his finished work carefully. I am from Pittsburgh, and he repaired work i had done by another surgeon here. You have no idea the work he had to do! Yet he performed the surgery beautifully and was extremely fair cost wise. It has only been a month since my abdominoplasty/liposuction, and I am healing beautifully and ready for my cruise next month.
Sincerely,
K A Bridge
THE TOTAL BODY LIFT.......2006-02-24
The TOTAL BODY LIFT by Dr. Dennis Hurwitz is a must read by anyone who is considering having gastric bypass and for those doctors who treat the obese. It not only gives in great detail all the procedures done in the Total Body Lift but also give excellent information on gastric bypass. There are very detailed drawings of the procedures with before and after photo's. I personally have had the Total Body Lift done by Dr. Hurwitz after losing 175 pounds. It is a most amazing transformation. After being overweight since I was 7 years old and continued to gain after each child, I have never been an average weight. After that extreme weight loss there was a lot of hanging skin, though pleased that I looked better and was the healthiest I have ever been; still I was not happy with how my body looked. After the Total Body Lift, the skin was tight and I had a figure, now fitting into a size 10 jean was just incredible. Dr. Hurwitz is a brilliant surgeon that combines plastic surgery with art. To be able to transform all the hanging skin into a nice looking figure after so many years of obesity is truly amazing. In addition to his skill, his wonderful bedside manner, warm personality and his wonderful staff I feel like I am part of the family. He is truly a unique individual that we (the ex-obese) are so fortunate to have. Thank you Dr. Hurwitz for my amazing transformation.
Total Body Lift:Reshaping the Breasts, Chest, Arms, Thighs Hips, Bak, Waist, Abdomen,And Knees After Weight Loss, Aging and Preg.......2006-02-14
This is a great overview of total body lift surgery. Dr. Hurwitz is a pioneer in this field and the book gives you a complete explanation of what can be done to reshape your body after massive weight loss. The personal case histories and photos are amazing stories in and of themselves. Most importantly, it educates the reader about the key questions you need to ask yourself and your doctor before you go ahead with any procedure described in the book. Highly recommend it!
Total Body Lift - A Dream Come True.......2005-12-07
A must read for anyone considering plastic surgery. Dr. Hurwitz has written a book for those of us wanting and needing comprehensive knowledge of what to expect before, during and after such an extensive, life changing procedure. This book also captures the heart of this surgeon, giving the reader the pleasure of an introduction to, if they're lucky enough, the Doctor who will sculpture their body......and change their life forever, as Dr. Hurwitz has done for me.

This is a good book. It gives detailed descriptions of all the exercises as well as some photos. Since there is a lot of reading of exercise descriptions, it would probably be a good idea to get this book before you have the baby. I found it difficult to read & practice the exercises once I had my baby.

Product Description
Not all pregnancies end with a healthy child going home from the hospital in the arms of its happy parents. There is a little recognized reality that many pregnancies end in predelivery death in utero. There are numerous reasons for such tragedies, but often the loss is unexplainable. Amy L. Abbey as author and editor, has gathered the stories of almost a dozen families, and shares how the families coped with loss and went on to have successful pregnancies.

Good book, but be careful.......2007-03-25
This is a great book with alot of inspirational stories from women who have suffered one or multiple losses and gone on to have living babies. A word of caution though: during times, this book was very uplifting. At others, it caused more anxiety than what it was worth. If you have suffered a loss and then gone to a grief support group or an online forum for the same purpose, chances are you have heard lots of stories of other pregnancy losses and what happened to cause them (usually things you might not have ever heard of). Those stories can cause some unease, but for some reason it seems a little greater in this book. It might just be me personally; but personally, this was a good book but I couldn't finish it because I found that at times it was more harmful than helpful. That being said, I think it is a beautiful book that has allowed alot of women (and some men, I think) to tell their stories. This is definitely a book that I will come back to - when I'm ready.
A Book That Can Make a Very Lonely Journey a Little Less Lonely.......2006-07-11
Pregnancy after a loss can be a very lonely journey, even if you're surrounded by family members who are desperately trying to offer their love and support; and healthcare providers who are doing their best to ease your anxiety this time around. Sometimes the only thing that can make you feel less alone is to connect with other parents who have made this journey: parents who understand the mix of joy and worry that accompany you during this unique pregnancy experience.
Amy Abbey's book reads like a friend who has been there and who understands why one positive pregnancy test the next time around is never enough; how an ultrasound can sometimes feel like 'the enemy'; and how the experience of loss changes the landscape of pregnancy and parenting forever.
