Customer Reviews:
Fine for Pilates rookies.......2003-09-26
This book describes exercises that seem closer to Yoga than traditional Pilates. I practiced traditional Pilates for 10 months prior to becoming pregnant and the exercises described were a big step backward for me. If you are new to the principles of Pilates, this is a good place to learn the basics of the "Powerhouse". However, I haven't heard great things about the Winsor or Green/King books either. I'd suggest finding a certified Pilates instructor to guide you through Pilates during pregnancy if you want to get the maximum benefit. Traditional instructors can be found at www.pilates-studio.com. You may also find instructors in your area that are certified by Stott or Physical Mind Institute. Both of these alternate methods offer variations to what is termed "Authentic" Pilates.

Book Description
Because of its emphasis on focused breathing, gentle stretching, and precise technique, Pilates is an ideal exercise program for expectant mothers. By following the clear explanations and photo sequences in this special lay-flat binding of Pilates Workbook for Pregnancy, readers will train and strengthen the body’s core muscles — without risking harm to mother or unborn child. Strengthening these muscle groups helps ease labor and aids in swift recovery after pregnancy. Pilates Workbook for Pregnancy uses original Pilates matwork techniques to create a program designed specifically for pregnant women. Appropriate for future mothers at all levels of proficiency, the book offers three versions of each Pilates movement: easy, for those with little exercise experience prior to pregnancy; moderate, for those who are fairly active; and challenging, for those who already practice Pilates.
Customer Reviews:
Good book!.......2007-02-10
Before becoming pregnant, I was actively involved in Pilates. This book is great because it modified standard Pilates moves for pregnancy. Since I am currently in my first trimester, I prefer to do some of the moves as we do in class, and the book is too easy in a few aspects. But I can see, as I move through my pregnancy and my belly becomes bigger, that the modifications and suggestions will be great to have and will help to keep me in Pilates shape. I like the focus on breathing, which is so important in Pilates.
Like Sushi.......2005-05-16
This book is is wonderfully presented with great informations, but a can leave you a bit hungry. It's a great bargin and a nice quick referance for teachers. I have found many points that have not been addressed in thicker and more expensive books. The exercises they have chosen to illustrate are well thought out because they offer idea's on how to modify similar exercises. A great workbook for current students and instructors.
there has to be a better pregnancy pilates workout.......2005-05-09
I have been doing Pilates matwork for three years. when I became pregnant, I still wanted to continue with the workout but knew I needed to make some modifications. I found that this book was not very informative or helpful. The exercises were limited and several of them were perfomed while you're on your back. There are better exercise books that also work your core.
Great for those new to or experienced with Pilates.......2005-02-26
I did pilates for 3 months before I became pregnant and for the first 3 months of my pregnancy, until it became clear that neither of my two teachers knew how to adapt the exercises for a pregnant woman. This book is excellent: well written, with many good photos accompanied by clear instruction. The exercises are modified for each of the 3 trimesters and for 3 levels of experience with Pilates, from beginner to experienced. There is a complete section on postnatal conditioning as well. There are sufficient exercises for a good program, neither too long nor too short. The exercises are designed with extensive consideration for avoiding long- and short-term pregnancy and postnatal damage. This book DOES lay flat and will be appreciated by those who don't always want to work out in front of a video or as a more complete adjunct to a video. I do not know, however, whether a beginner can learn Pilates only from a book, without the feedback from an instructor. Women should also not expect an aerobic workout from Pilates; instead, you will strengthen and condition your core more in the style of yoga, tai chi, or weight training.
One of the safest and most thorough books...........2003-07-20
This book addresses a number of very important issues of Pilates exercise and safety for pregnant women, with extensive consideration of your overall physical condition before and after delivery. A number of other Pilates books for pregnancy do not focus on important aspects of abdominal muscle integrity and the effects of hormones like relaxin on your body during pregnancy and after delivery. The exercise focus during and immediately after pregnancy should be on proper breathing, aiding your posture and stability, rather than "working out". This is a time to develop greater body awareness and breathing techniques, not to try for major fitness goals. Some Pilates exercises simply should not be pursued after the 20th week of pregnancy. Michael King's book will allow you to assess your pre-natal and post-partum condition and evaluate which exercises will be safe for you to perform, as well as beneficial for your body. An Excellent book.

Pilates is an exceptional exercise technique for core strengthening, flexibility, and developing a lean, strong physique. But is it right for pregnancy? Yes, says Pilates trainer-to-the-stars Mari Winsor. Pilates is a safe way to reduce stress and increase comfort and balance during pregnancy. Additionally, Pilates will make your pregnancy and delivery easier, your recovery quicker, and it will benefit your baby by keeping blood circulating to the abdominal area, says obstetrician Uzzi Reiss, M.D., in the foreword.
Winsor explains Pilates concepts and techniques, with a focus on the pregnant body. Then she presents 22 to 39 exercises in each of three workouts, one for each trimester, that are most suitable for pregnant women. The exercises are described clearly and carefully in three stages--"prep" (getting in the correct position to begin), "ready" (techniques and cautions for doing the exercise correctly), and "action" (step-by-step instructions)--and are well illustrated with photos.
The Pilates Pregnancy is aimed at both novices and experienced exercisers, but since it's difficult to learn Pilates from scratch from a book, it will be most useful for the experienced Pilates exerciser who wants a safe home workout throughout her pregnancy. --Joan Price
Book Description
By the author of the best-selling Pilates Powerhouse, the first guide to Pilates during and after pregnancy.
A wonderful conditioning exercise for women of all shapes and sizes, Pilates is now recognized as one of the best overall exercises for the pregnant body as well. A low-impact and relaxing exercise regimen, Pilates doesn't divert blood flow from the growing fetus. As important, Pilates strengthens the abdominal muscles known as the "powerhouse," making it easier for new mothers to recover from childbirth and regain their pre-pregnancy waistline.
Working with Dr. Uzzi Reiss, a prominent Los Angeles-based gynecologist and obstetrician, Mari Winsor has developed the first mat-based Pilates routine for pregnant women, bringing this time-efficient and highly effective means to get and stay in shape into the home. Illustrated with 100 black-and-white photographs, the exercises in The Pilates Pregnancy are gentle on the body and easy to do at any stage of pregnancy.
Customer Reviews:
very good pilates workout.......2007-02-11
I really enjoyed the foreword of this book; great information I didn't know. I've done the 2nd trimester exercises and got a good workout. I wish this were available on DVD, as turning the pages while doing a workout isn't so convenient.
I enjoy this book.......2006-09-26
I just bought this book a couple of weeks ago and have really been enjoying it. I feel like my posture is great after a single workout and feel very strong in my core. I always look forward to my Pilates workout.
I felt it was a little repetitive in the intro. and the beginning chapters, when the principles of Pilates, etc. are explained, but they do get their points across effectively.
I also felt they do a disservice to pregnant women by insinuating that Pilates is the only good or effective help for preventing low back pain. (p. 11) For example, they write, 'what chiropractor will work on a pregnant woman?' Any chiropractor I know has had a lot of training to work on pregnant women and their newborns later on. There are also other helpful resources a pregnant woman has, such as massage therapy. I realize they are trying to promote Pilates primarily, as that's what the book is teaching, yet I think it'd be great if they would have been more open to giving a little more info. on things that would work well hand-in-hand with the Pilates exercises.
I use this every day.......2003-06-27
I really like this book. I had been doing Pilates matwork for about 18 months when I became pregnant. I didn't start using the book's routines until I was about 16 weeks pregnant, because before that time my regular Stott Intermediate Matwork video routine seemed fine. I really like the second trimester routine Mari has outlined -- although I don't do the entire routine because of time -- I skip some of the side-lying work and the rowing moves. I'm now 33 weeks pregnant and still doing the second trimester routine because it still feels good (although last week I dropped a couple of the moves that were beginning to get uncomfortable). I have no problems exercising while on my back -- and I have been told that as long as I don't feel dizzy or nauseated, that exercising on my back is fine. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to try Pilates during pregnancy, especially those women who already have at least a basic understanding of the moves.
Not realistic.......2003-06-18
I am long-time Pilates practitioner and bought the book out of curiousity when I became pregnant to see if there were any different ways of doing the traditional exercises. Windsor keeps the method "traditional" to a fault. There are not enough modifications shown. Also, too many of the exercises are done lying on one's back. This is just not realistic after a certain point in pregnancy. I felt lightheaded and dizzy from lack of oxygen lying down! I would have liked to see more sidelying exercises, magic circle routines or standing exercises. The forward of the book if well written and there is no doubt that Pilates can relieve many of the discomforts associated with pregnancy. It really can keep you in shape and help you regain your body after a baby. However, this book is only suitable for an experienced practitioner who knows how to safely modify the exercises. I would never recommend it to a novice. Rather I would steer them in the direction of a good yoga for pregnancy book or video.
it's ok but not great.......2003-03-06
this book is an ok book but it takes an hour or more to do all the excrecizes. also it is seperated in to each trimester that's a good feature. but in both the second and third trimester it still has you doing excrcizes while lieing on your back. no way through each of my pregnancys my doctor has said don't lay on your back after the 1st trimester. other than that the book is good it get's you in shape and it dose help alot postpartum

Book Description
Target and tone your post-pregnancy trouble zones.
Every new mother struggles to lose those extra pounds, regain her energy, and cope with the stresses of motherhood. Karrie Adamany, a mother and Pilates instructor, explains how Pilates is uniquely able to address the problem areas for women after they give birth, with its attention to strengthening and toning "the core"-the abdominal muscles, lower back, and buttocks-while also relieving tension and balancing mood.
With a straightforward and friendly voice of experience, Adamany guides new moms through four fitness stages after pregnancy with unique workouts that help restore the body after giving birth; melt away excess weight; tone and strengthen ab, butt, and thigh muscles; renew strength and energy; and relieve common aches and pains. She even shows women how to take their training off the mat by providing Pilates-inspired tips for carrying a baby, breast-feeding positions, and improving posture while working or doing housework. The Post-Pregnancy Pilates Book can help any mom get her body into even better shape than it was before pregnancy.
Customer Reviews:
great for abs.......2007-06-26
Before pregnancy, I worked out all the time. During pregnancy I swam to keep fit. after pregnancy, i waited 8 weeks to begin exercise. this book makes it easy to do short work-outs next to the baby. never worry about going to the gym and the baby needing to be fed because you can work out right next to the baby sleeping in their crib. she breaks up the work-out in weeks. the first week was easy but it has great stretches in it. the second week is not that hard but it does work your abs well. I tried pilates before but was not very consistent. having baby fat and wanting to lose it have made this book a great addition to my workout! I have no worries because I know this book will give me better abs than I had before.
watch your body transform - again!.......2005-07-19
No longer will friends receive an adorable outfit or spa certificate upon their return from the hospital. I will be giving every new mom I know Ms. Adamany's book Post-Pregnancy Pilates. I was introduced to Pilates prior to my pregnancies and have successfully managed to return to pre-pregnancy (minus a few pounds) weight in six months, and am feeling fantastic. That said, I recently quit my job to spend more time with my wee ones and have no income to support private sessions or expensive classes.
Though nothing can undo the impact and marks left on our bodies from pregnancy, this method has worked wonders for me and now moms everywhere can use this incredibly accessible guide. The photos and explanations are clear and illustrate proper form extremely well. I love the time saving workouts - they're perfect to fit in during nap time! Ms. Adamany's witty writing (think Sex and the City) engaged me instantly and I was excited and motivated by this fit, fun mama. Make time for yourself and buy this book!
ABsolutely FABulous.......2005-06-28
As a Certified Pilates Instructor, I recommend this book to all of my clients who are mothers (recent or not so recent). They love that it is easy to read and understand. From a trainer's perspective this is important for motivation and the ability to stick with a program that needs to be squeezed in between feeding time and bath time. Adamany -based on her own personal experience - covers the absolute fundamental basics needed to re-discover the core muscles that are so abused during pregnancy and delivery. Once some abdominal awareness is regained, she does a great job progressing the reader through more challenging exercise sequences while also leaving room for "quick-fix" exercises, say a simple neck or lower back stretch. Please enjoy!
fit body after baby.......2005-06-20
I purchased this book for my 2 daughter-in-laws who have recently had babies. They love the approach Adamany takes to getting back in shape - using personal experience and giving extra tips with each chapter. The clear instructions and photos make it easy to follow. I use her first book - The Pilates Edge - and have found it helpful especially for biking and skiing.

Book Description
The ideal book for the new mother eager to tone her body and stimulate her young child's development at the same time
Though she yearns for her pre-pregnancy figure, a new mother has little time to devote to exercise; attending to the needs of a newborn is a full-time job. A revolutionary postnatal fitness program, Pee Wee Pilates gives new mothers what no other fitness program or book has to date: a quick and proven method they can do at home to whip their postpartum body gently back into shape and enrich their babies at the same time.
Pilates targets the areas most affected by pregnancy (abdomen, hips, lower back, and buttocks), so new moms will get results fast without having to leave homes or carve out huge chunks of time. Simultaneously, because the baby is incorporated into the Pilates movements, women get to enjoy a loving and fun interaction with their babies. Unlike other mother/baby fitness programs, however, baby is far more than just a prop; the exercises in Pee Wee Pilates are designed specifically to help foster a little one's development and attachment to mother. Developed by one of New York City's leading Pilates teachers, Pee Wee Pilates promises to be the hot new "baby and me" exercise program for new mothers everywhere.

This book shows wonderful ways to incorporate your baby into your fitness routine. Great for postpartum through the first year and beyond. Clear photos and good instruction as well as a "How to know if you're doing it correctly" section after each exercise. Excellent! Now I just wish they made a DVD!

Higher Expectations.......2007-05-13
I found the material to be helpful in working with the Pilates method regarding it's application to pregnancy, although I felt the format to be less than acceptable for the price. When turning the pages of the booklet, they would unwind from the binding. The product quality did not meet the price point. I also purchased "Pilates Cadillac Applications for Pregnancy" & found it to be of the same quality as the booklet on the reformer. I returned them both.
