LOVE this book.......2007-09-26
This book was a sanity saver for a mom with 3 year old twins. How neat to have a resource to turn to on rainy days, snowed in days or days when things are going chaotic. This book is full of all kinds of activities and suggestions on how to occupy your little ones. I love it!! The activities are so easy to do and they are so creative. There are recipes, games and instructions to make homemade toys. These are just a few of the many materials covered. I recommend this book for anyone who has young children!
Fabulous Idea Book.......2007-06-11
I bought this book for my husband and I to come up with simple activities for our 3 1/2 year old. We have tried several activities and my daughter loves them. They are simple, use common, everyday household stuff and are inexpensive to do. It is a great basic activity book.

Consistency is the key.......2007-07-31
I think when any parent picks up a book like this, the situation is already out of control or at least something that needs tweaked. I found myself with a newborn baby and a 2 yr old that a couple months before moved from our bed to her own "big girl bed". Little by little my little girl found her way back into our bed. There was no room for me, my husband, a newborn and a toddler, so my husband ended up sleeping in our daughter's room. Something really wrong with that picture. I was searching the internet for some answers for my questions and to look for a fix, and found Elizabeth Pantley who was looking for test moms for her new book for toddlers and preschoolers. I was fortunate enough to be selected as a "test Mom" for this book and very proud to say that the modifications that we made as a family worked for us.
Every one wants instant results, they think by reading something it will miraculously happen. It takes time, some kids adjust well quickly, some will adjust over many months, but the importance of this book is that consistency is the key. I could have given up many times to get my daughter and later my son into their own beds, but I knew that it wasn't going to be overnight and I came to accept that.
My daughter has a nightly routine, it is still the same routine at 6 as it was at 2. I took what Elizabeth Pantley gave to me, and applied it to our bedtime battles. I am not saying that you have to use what she says word for word, you may have to make adjustments that work for you and your childs personality. But I do know that it works. My daughter slept through the night at 2.5 yrs old and my son was about 13 months, and thankfully I had this book because I was able to curtail some of his bedtime battles at a much early age.
Yes it does work and it is a very easy read, but like I said, if you are looking for a quick fix, I think you will be hard pressed to find that anywhere. If you are serious about making a change, Elizabeth gives many options and alternatives to make this a successful change.
Works with every parenting style except CIO.......2007-05-25
This book proved so helpful to me and my family. It helped me to understand just how much sleep my almost two year old son really needed and how important naps were no matter how much sleep he was getting at night. I love that she gives so many examples and basically says that sleep is important no matter your parenting style. She does not seem to have a bias for/against anything other than no "crying it out". She explains her reasoning for that too. I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks their child has a sleep problem and to anyone who thinks they don't have a sleep problem but they have a child who is cranky and clingy. I'd give more than 5 stars if it could be rated higher.
NO CIO.......2007-05-23
This book is wonderful for those who choose to put their kids to sleep on their own without making them cry-it-out. It works!
Helpful encouragement, good ideas.......2007-05-16
If you are looking for a gentle approach to helping your child sleep through the night, this is a great book. I also appreciate that the author is sensitive to the needs of mothers who are breastfeeding their toddler or pre-schooler. It is encouraging to read that you are not alone in having a toddler who does not sleep through the night. This book has some good ideas that I have used, but I have not put the full method to use. The downsides of this book are that the full method requires a long-term commitment and effort and if you have any doubts about it - as I did - you are not likely to follow through. Also, the author at times is too rigid about not letting your child cry. I have not practiced the "cry it out" approach at all, but with my child's temperment and personality there are times when she cries for a few minutes in bed before falling asleep and I have had to come to accept that as a reality.
Loved this book!.......2007-05-13
I found so many of the suggestions in this book to be helpful, and even bought it as a gift for another mom.

Not be the best book for those using Attachment Parenting.......2007-09-18
There was a spot in the book that I didn't particularly like. It was about co-sleeping. Although it was claiming not to be putting down co-sleeping, it was definately inferring that it was better not too, I felt that it was putting the undertone suggestion that it wasn't the best thing. That children need to be able to self sooth etc...We are strong advocates for Attachment Parenting, and very researched in this area, and those related topics around it, and it is not correct to assume a child won't learn to sleep on their own, if not put in an alone situation, or that they will some how miss out on skill's like calming or soothing themselves, if you don't push them more quickly towards independence. Children will grow independent, on their own time table, and because of the attachment you unselfishly allow when they are young, which is not pulling away the security they need, they become more grounded, having been allowed to mature on their own, and reach towards independence step-by-step when they are ready, they grow up feeling secure. When children grow up feeling secure, that were not rushed into sleeping in their own bed, or forced to stop Breastfeeding before they are ready, etc... These people grow up more secure and independent than otherwise. Our Daughter just turned Three and still sleeps with me, and i'm in no hurry to move Her anywhere, and She's a very happy person, and, with no issues, and growing more and more independent on Her own, anyway, everyday : )
This does NOT mean that we put down any other Parents for anything they are doing, or whats right for them. Thats not what I mean. We have Friends that Parent in all different ways. I just wanted to say my peace about the co-sleeping, for some Families like us, it works, and has turned out to be a great experience, and I don't agree that it is some how any kind of a negative. For us it's a definate Positive!
A great help in our household........2006-11-04
Jane Nelson once again provides sound, practical advice for creating a positive energy household. Our 4 year old had us spiralling out of control until we read this book and made some simple changes and became more understanding of her developmental capacities.
Perfect helper when you need it most!.......2006-03-13
Our daughter has just turned three and wow, what happened? We feel like we have tried everything for discipline from time out to consequences and even the "S" word. Nothing really works. My friend recommended this book and it really does help. It's not the end all and be all of all books but it reminds you to think on their level and gives you good ideas for when you are faced with those very tough moments. I must say they suggest a positive time out, which I thought was CRAZY but figured I have tried everything else so why not? It really does work and continues to work. The best part is that I make it her choice and most times don't even have to get mad. I simply say, if you are going to behave that way (explaining the bad behavor, i.e. not playing nicely) please go to your time out corner until you are ready to come back and play nicely and sometimes she goes running in there crying (and then will return letting me know she is done and ready to play nicely) and sometimes she'll stop and think a moment and say, I don't need time out I can play nicely now. It's amazing.
Great advice, but have support.......2005-09-27
Dealing with preschoolers, as any parent will tell you, is a challenge. How do you deal with this little being, that is both independent and dependent, at the same time? Nelsen, et al, have provided a common sense approach to raising preschoolers.
The ideas that are presented in this book, when used properly, are incredibly powerful. An example of this is recognizing the message being sent by the misbehavior of a preschooler. If you can identify what the message being sent is, then you have a greater chance of being able to redirect the behavior. Of course, you have to be willing to take the time to analyze the behavior and define what you are willing to do in response to the behavior. While the tools provided in this book are very powerful when used properly, they can also be very damaging when used improperly. If you have someone that can read the book with you and provide support, you will be much more effective at implementing the strategies successfully.
This book provides an idea for raising children without using humiliation or punitive measures to get short term changes in behavior. If you are looking for support for the, "My parents raised me this way and I turned out just fine." mentality, then find another book. If on the other hand, you are looking for a book that provides a basis for what I would consider to be an improved method of dealing with preschoolers, then this is your book.
The one thing that kept me from giving this book five stars is that it fails to address immediate safety issues. In many cases the book suggests plans that are implemented after you have had a moment to consider your response. It would be helpful if the authors provided some ideas as to how to respond to potentially dangerous situations without losing your cool and still treating your child as a human being who has control over their own actions.
Best guidance for a lost parent.......2005-09-07
WOW!! My 4 year old has been pushing me to the limits and all I kept thinking was that I was failing. This book has put so much into perspective for me and has given suggestions on how to handle situations. I don't yell as much and I don't get angry either. I have a better understanding of my daughter's mindset and it has helped with my 17 month old too!!

Pretty but empty of substance.......2007-09-26
This is a great book to look at. It scream's GIFT ME! But if you look inside this book, you will find that you could do better with any number of game and craft resources. It is not useful if you have any other busy books.
Neat book!.......2007-02-03
I like this book for the simple fact that once you've tried everything you can think of to entertain your toddler, ALAS, comes this book through the mail. There's really neat activities, recipes , and crafts. It goes from infant to preschooler..so you'll get good use out of it. I would recommend this book to any mother.
a little disappointing.......2007-01-12
i really decided to buy this book because i wanted to find some activities i could do with my child that would help his development. but i was disappointed to find out that there was like 3 pages of stuff for children ages 0 to 6 months. this book was advertised as having stuff from birth to toddler, it shouldn't have misled people about what was in the book. i mean all there is for under 6 months is some rhymes and a couple of activities. i thought there was going to be some stuff about activities to help them reach their developmental milestones. i mean their are probably not many people that don't know the few rhymes and games that are in the book.
A staple if you have children.......2006-12-24
Engaging activities--simple and creative. Years of fun, playing, exploring, and learning. Easy to understand and do. We have loved it and given it as a gift to new parents, too. Wonderful!
A great resource idea book!.......2005-09-27
I get a TON of ideas from Wonderplay by Fretta Reitzes. I'm a home daycare provider and I'm always looking for ideas to do with my daycare kids. I don't know what I would do with out this book. It'a MUST have for home daycare providers and parents of small kids
Book Description
Hugs and smiles and playtime: If only parenting 2- to 5-year-olds was this simple. But any parent of a toddler or preschooler knows that it also often requires dealing with whining, tantrums, "no, I won't" and other generally naughty behavior that tests the limits of your ingenuity and patience. Common Sense Parenting of Toddlers and Preschoolers shows parents how discipline can be more about teaching than punishment and more positive than negative for both you and your child.

A waste of money.......2007-07-18
This book is VERY basic and overall boring. There are better books out there for sure. Try your local library!
Pretty good book.......2007-03-09
The book is easily readable, a quick read, which I appreciated. And many things were discussed, not necessarily answered for me, but things I am thinking about were answered. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because my situation is different from the author's situation, so some of the material misses the mark (for me).
At the same time I will keep the book for future reference.
I love this book.......2006-11-05
This is a great book - my husband and I have put the advice into action and it works! For example. practice with your toddler, prevent bad behavior: my husband took our 2 1/2 year daughter trick or treating. After a few houses he came back and said she wouldn't say thank you to anyone. I got down to her level and we practiced, you knock on the door, say trick or treat, I pretended to give her candy and told her to say thank you. I was very specific but kept it in her terms and it worked!! She told everyone else that night thank you. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't feel like we needed it, it's really helped. They talk about praise, time out and reminding mom and dad how important it is to stay calm. After all, they're watching everything we do even when we don't think they're even listening.
That's why they say Common Sense..........2006-04-21
A very helpful book and well written. Alot of the points in topics are common sense and when you read them your like well "duh" but you'd be surprised how refreshing it is to have these points acknowledged. I like how the book starts with a little background in child development and offers a better understanding of a child as over the years it is easily forgotten what it is like to be a child and their mind set. I do love the book and like how it is set up where you do have to read through the book to get the whole concept. The only reason I did not give it five stars even though I loved it, the book although says toddlers (which to me is 18mnths-2yrs) it seems like it was more geared to an older child possible 4 yrs and older. I could be wrong but alot of the technique and such have not worked on my almost two year old and neither did the approach. But over all it was an excellent book and would reccommend it.
absolutely excellent.......2003-04-23
i just had to take the time to write this review to let people know how wonderful this book is. If you don't believe in yelling at or hitting your children, but you can't figure out what else to do, this is the book for you. I have a 4 year old and have been following this book's advice for about 6 months and it works every time. it worked right from the beginning. It made sense to me and fit my style of wanting to "teach" my daughter rather than scold and threaten. It gives you examples and step by step instructiions. It is not a book that you can just "flip through" to get answers to your questions. You have to "read" it all the way through because one section links to the other. But it reads easily and quickly like you are talking to someone who understands. You can read it in a day or two. My copy is highlighted and dog-eared all the way through. I can't say enough about this book. My daughter and I are BOTH happier and better "behaved". I hope the authors have written other books on the next age group and adolescents.

Book Description
Finally..a book that genuinely celebrates a young child joining their forever family past infancy. With its touching message of love and reassurance, and whimsical illustrations, Welcome Home, Forever Child is sure to be cherished by children and parents alike. While best suited to children ages two to eight, this gem will undoubtedly be enjoyed by older children as well. Most children's adoption books reflect infant adoptions, and may not be appropriate for the older child who spent their early years in foster care or an orphanage. Welcome Home, Forever Child is a much needed book that social workers and therapists will want to recommend to families who adopted their child past the age of two. The book helps parents reassure children of their permanent place in the new family, and of how much they are wanted and loved. It will also make a very special and meaningful keepsake gift for a child upon joining his or her new family, upon finalizing the adoption, or upon the anniversary of either event. READ WHAT TOP ADOPTION AND PARENTING EXPERTS ARE SAYING ABOUT WELCOME HOME, FOREVER CHILD: "I truly enjoyed reading this book. Children will love the pictures and delightful rhymes. Customer Reviews:
Perfect for any older-child adoption.......2007-08-29
The book Welcome Home, Forever Child is a wonderful children's book! This one is different from the children's books I've reviewed in the past, as this one is written particularly for children who are NOT adopted as infants. There is a whole different set of issues and questions that go along with a child who is adopted at an older age. They may remember experiences shared with birth and/or foster families, and have questions about how long they will be with their "new" family.
If you've adopted a toddler, preschooler, or older child, then this book is a MUST for your family! Author Christine Mitchell shares a story of love and the meaning of adoption in rhyming words that children will love to hear and easily understand. It will help create a bond with adoptive parents, and explain to the child what "forever" means.
The illustrations are so sweet. The author has used cats as the characters in the story. I love this because it makes the book appropriate for any type of adoptive situation- transracial, etc. The book starts out by talking about all the important milestones that may have been missed by the adoptive parents, but goes on to primarily focus on all the "firsts" that are to come, with a promise of being there to share in them. I am sure this book will be one that you will read over and over again with your child(ren).
Well Done! .......2007-08-21
Christine Mitchell successfully communicates a much needed message, on a child's level, that both the adopted toddler and the parent need reinforced...the many firsts that they will share. Great job!

Heartwarming and Endearing.......2007-04-05
I am a kindergarten teacher and loved this book from the first moment I read it! I was so touched by the message of love, hope, permanence and a lifetime of memories that an adopted child would finally find with his/her new adoptive family. I bought this book for a friend who is in the process of adopting two older children.
C.Botello, Adoptive Support Services, Family Stress Center.......2007-03-06
Review sent in :Christine's book has captured into words and pictures the often hard to mention past of an older adopted child in a very warm and accepting manner. Acknowledging an adoptive child's beginnings is very important for the basis of self-esteem in the present and basic trust in the future. I love the simple yet straight forward manner Christine handles the loss of not being in their child's life from the beginning. As a professional in adoption support groups, I highly recommend this book. It will inspire both child and parent to work towards a healthy, honest and loving relationship. For Adoptive Families of All Colors.......2007-02-24
I love that this much-needed book works equally well for transracial families because each member of the cat family depicted is a different color and pattern. My daughter (adopted as a baby) was very moved by it and requested that I read it again and again. I give it a standing ovation!
Book Description
Children's eating habits change often between infancy and preschool. Dr. Paula's Good Nutrition Guide for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers provides nutrition guidelines for young children and gives parents confidence in this confusing and important area. Pediatrician Paula Elbirt discusses nutrition by age group. Breastfeeding, formula, solids, allergy issues, gas, and burping are issues for infants. Topics for toddlers include creating a healthful diet, snacks, whole versus skim milk, tantrums and food, and eating styles. Food issues change again for preschoolers, and include friends' influence on eating habits, what to do when a child is cranky from hunger, and much more. Sample recipes and menus are provided for each group. Dr. Elbirt describes important differences between emerging eating disorders and odd but harmless food preferences kids embrace briefly and then discard. Whether they have "fussy eaters" or are looking for better ways to provide their children with the best nutrition, Dr. Paula's Good Nutrition Guide for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers has the information parents need
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful!.......2003-12-26
Even though I had worked with a nutritionist and pediatrician for a year in trying to help my now 32 month old child to gain more weight, I still learned a lot from reading this book. It was reassuring to read the food diaries and then Dr. Paula's responses, because it discussed in detail how and what children really eat. As someone who has had to write a toddler's food diary, I can tell you that it's hard to really know how much your child is actually eating (nibble of this and bite of that), compare that to how much they are supposed to be eating according to guidelines(ounces, 1/2 cups, etc.), and come up with a clear picture. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who wanted to get some detailed information on young children's nutrition.

Informational.......2007-06-12
This is a great book to read to have a good basic knowledge on children's patterns of sleeping and should be used as a "guideline" to what to expect from your infant/toddler/preschooler sleeping needs as they progress.
If you only want to read one book..........2007-01-13
This book covers all the bases. However, if I hadn't read almost every other sleep book out there, I don't think this one alone would have been enough for me. It doesn't go in depth enough for any of the methods for my personal taste. That being said, it does have a lot of ideas and I'll keep it as more a reference guide.
Most Reassuring Sleep Book Ever!.......2006-11-10
This book is by far the best sleep-help book out there, and I feel like I have tried them all. It reassures you that your situation is totally normal and reminds you that your baby is just a little thing with a "tiny tummy" that does need to be filled every few hours in the beginning. I wish I had this book when my first born (now 2) was an infant. I wouldn't have stressed out so much. It also provides helpful advice about how to get your baby to sleep for longer and longer periods of time, until they are finally "sleeping through the night" (even tho I learned that this definition is pretty loose). I want my baby to sleep through MY night, not hers! This book rocks.
Decent overview, not enough practical advice.......2006-08-07
My 10 week old won't nap, yet nowhere in this book can you find any help on how to get your baby to take naps. The all important "Sleep Solution" I'm looking for can't be found here.
A practical book with real solutions.......2006-05-05
You're tired. The baby isn't sleeping properly and you need help NOW! That's why this book is great, because it gives you ideas you can try today, implement right now. And if the first idea doesn't work, there's often another one, too, sometimes a whole list of ideas.
I like the fact that this book talks to real mothers about real sleep problems and gives real, practical solutions. Ann Douglas writes like your older sister or best friend would talk to you, gently and with humour.
