5 out of 5 stars LOVE this book.......2007-09-26

This book was a sanity saver for a mom with 3 year old twins. How neat to have a resource to turn to on rainy days, snowed in days or days when things are going chaotic. This book is full of all kinds of activities and suggestions on how to occupy your little ones. I love it!! The activities are so easy to do and they are so creative. There are recipes, games and instructions to make homemade toys. These are just a few of the many materials covered. I recommend this book for anyone who has young children!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Idea Book.......2007-06-11

I bought this book for my husband and I to come up with simple activities for our 3 1/2 year old. We have tried several activities and my daughter loves them. They are simple, use common, everyday household stuff and are inexpensive to do. It is a great basic activity book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2007-08-25

This book offers a good guide for someone new to homeschooling or maybe interested in the idea. If you are not certain what your child will need or where to begin this book will get you started.

4 out of 5 stars Awsome Reference!!!.......2007-07-23

If you want to build your own curriculum or just want to know what your kids need to know for each grade than this is your book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Homeschoolers.......2007-06-23

I have read a lot of books on homeschooling. This book is by far one of the best books for educating your children at home. It breaks everything down not only by subject, but also by grade. There are many great resources and ideas given in this book. If you are new to homeschooling or would like a idea of what is taught grade by grade, this is the book for you. Thank you so much to this great author.

5 out of 5 stars Home Learning.......2007-04-10

I first checked this book out from the library after deciding to pull my children from the public school system. I loved the book so much that I bought it. It lists everything that children should know by grade level and even gives some resources...and some are free! Some of the resources listed can be found at the local library, which also adds up to free!Without this book I would be lost on what my children should be learning. This book has made all of the difference in my children's learning schedule. If you are homeschooling this book is great!

5 out of 5 stars Must have for any homeschooler.......2007-03-31

I have been home schooling for three years and never really thought about using any guides or books to assist me. However, with my two eldest entering middle school stage and my youngest just starting out, I realized that I needed help! This book is exactly what I needed. It helped me to see what my kindergartener was suppose to know before she began first grade level and also gave me a great bench mark for where my older children should be.

Added to that, I have spend many wasted hours on-line and in bookstores trying to find suitable text and workbooks which are appropriate for home school settings. Many times I have wasted money by buying books or teaching tools which I think will be useful, only to find that they are not. I know that this will never happen again now I have this book as my guide. It gives recommendations for text-books, workbooks and curriculum, appropriate to grade level. In September, I have two children going into grade 8, one into grade 4 and one into first grade. This book is solely responsible for making me absolutely prepared for the whole school year for the first time since I began home schooling! If you are a homeschooler, new or experienced, this book is definitely required reading!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-03-04

I became interested in this method of schooling the first time I ever read about it. I had yanked my four year old son from his preschool program because he had gone from a normal happy preschooler to a biting, kicking, swearing little monster. He also has a speech delay, which did not help matters at all because we could not understand what he was talking about when he tried to tell us what was happening during his day.

His father and I decided to homeschool him until he's six, upon which time we will enroll him with the local charter school. So I started researching different methods and the first time I saw this I fell in love. But my heart sank when I saw just how expensive the equipment is. I was also dissapointed when I discovered that we have a local Montessori school only to find out it cost more than we make in a month. My husband is a full time student on a very low, limited income. I could not in good concious sanction spending that kind of money. So I read everything, online and books, that I could get my hands on. And while all I read talked of the different methods, it never said how to implement them.

I saw this at Paperback Swap (awesome site) and snagged it on impulse. I am so glad that I did. It gave me everything I needed to get a start. It helped me understand the resources I already had and told me how to pull them together in a cohesive whole. I have four children ranging from 8 months - 4.5 years. The three oldest think it's great and they are so proud of themselves every day. Even my husband got in on it and helped me construct several items. We both love this book and I reccomend it to everyone that talks about teaching Montessori.

I also reccomend Seven Times the Sun: Guiding Your Child Through the Rhythms of the Day by Shea Darian

5 out of 5 stars great ideas .......2007-02-12

I am a medical student, single parent and needed something to introduce me & my daughter to Montessori instruction. I plan to enroll my 36 month old soon, but at this time, she is fine in the care of her grandparents and in the evenings, with me. Until she begins Montessori, I want to begin instilling some of the instructions. I ordered this book along with one other you will notice in my reviewed items. Both books are very good in my opinion, and all that I need. Even if I never enroll her in daycare, preschool, this is adequate. It gives great ideas that a parent or caregiver can share while with the child. Very good quality book.

    3 out of 5 stars common sense.......2007-01-04

The book was somewhat informative and helpful but I felt several of the exercises were things my toddler and I already do. If anything, the book is a good reminder of things we should be teaching our toddlers and children instead of parking them in front of a t.v. all day.

4 out of 5 stars Short, Simple, Practical .......2006-12-21

This book is a short, simple, practical guide to doing Montessori-inspired activities at home with your kids. There are several dozen examples of Montessori learning activities, each 2-3 pages long, with instructions on how to gather or make what's needed -- it could be as simple as finding colored buttons for sorting into an egg crate, pouring rice or sand between cups in a tray, or making salt clay with flour, salt, and water. Sure, they sound simple, but this kind of play teaches kids about cause and effect and stimulates the senses without needing battery-powered blinking lights and beeping sounds.

The activities are simple and give even the youngest kids opportunities for open-ended play while keeping an older kid's attention. As an example, I made the salt clay for my two year old and five year old and gave them plastic placemats and some cookie cutters, and they had fun for an hour making and naming what they made. Cost? $0, since I used things I already had in my house.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect guide for getting started!.......2006-08-23

My 7-year-old and 2-year-old have gone to Montessori school since they were babies, so when I recently decided to quit working and keep the 2-year-old home with me for a couple of years, I immediately sought out this book to help me prepare my home classroom. It has been wonderful for getting started. I can see though that I will eventually need more in-depth Montessori instruction manuals so I can fully understand how to introduce and teach using the more advanced Montessori materials. But this book was excellent for teaching the basics!

Once again, Sloane Tanen has created a great early childhood book that will become a child's favorite. I love this book and all the Sloane Tanen books!
Every home with very young children should have this book...it is wonderful!

      5 out of 5 stars ADORABLE.......2007-04-05

When we read Coco All Year Round to my 9 month old, he goes APE. The pictures are so colorful and chock full of imagery and the text is short, sweet and, as usual for Tanen, clever. Coco covers everything from stepping in poop to vegetarianism. We love it at our house.

5 out of 5 stars Coco charms again.......2006-10-09

Small children and the adults who read to them must both delight in Coco. This chic avian ingenue engages both wide-eyed pre-schoolers and their sophisticated elders. Who could resist Coco in her Halloween frog costume?

5 out of 5 stars Reason to celebrate.......2006-08-23

Here's another total charmer from Tanen. I read "Coco All Year Round" to my 10-month old son and he seemed to really enjoy the pictures. And I love the clever captions and quirky characters. I'm a big fan of Tanen's chicken books and highly recommend this newest one (and all the others) for the young and the young-at-heart.

5 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children everywhere........2007-04-14

Kindergarten teacher Jill Frankel Hauser presents Science Play, a compendium of over 65 safe, age-appropriate activities designed to foster creativity and a sense of discovery in children ages 2 to 6. Step-by-step instructions and simple black-and-white illustrations walk readers through activities such as observing earthworms at work, making puddle prints with food coloring, water, and a simple medicine dropper, or gathering and sorting rocks. Young children will most likely need an adult's help with reading the instructions, but the activities themselves are easy to do and highly inexpensive. Enthusiastically recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A fun way to introduce science to little kids!.......2006-02-13

It's absolutely perfect for our 3- and 5-year olds! It's a great way to introduce science concepts to them. The experiments are simple to prepare, very interesting and lots of fun. Also, most of the materials are common items used at home. We have done a number of the experiments without spending much money at all. It comes very handy, too, during rainy or snowy days. The activities help keep the kids from getting bored inside the house.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource.......2004-02-08

My kids loved these fun learning activities. Enough to keep them busy through early childhood. Nothing canned here. . . all creative and discovery-focused. Makes biology and even physics accessable to very young children. You can't go wrong with this outstanding guide.

This is really handy for the budding scientist in your preschooler. Experiements are written so that the early reader can understand and do the experiments on their own (it lets the reader know when a parent needs to help or supervise, such as when scissors are involved) and has question that the parent can use to further expand on projects. Also check this whole series, such as math play, arts and crafts from around the world, rainy day play, weather, shapes, etc. My son loves these activies. Plus for the price, you can't beat it. This book had some neat ideas and experiments, but not enough explanations for them. I have a very inquisitive 4 year old and this book just didn't satisfy his curiosity or my expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Homeschooling.......2006-10-05

My husband is a full time student and we live in student housing. I received this from one of the neighbors that was taking classes in child care and education. I had completely forgotten I had it until my husband found it going through a box of books we were going to get rid of. I decided to look through it before getting hauling it off and I'm so glad that I did. It goes from September through June, with approximately 20 projects for each month, except for September which only has 15, with each month being broken down into 4 sub categories. For instance, right now we're working on October. There are four sections, labled Colors; Foods; Farms & Farm Animals; and Halloween. We're in the Colors section and today we made leaf paintings using leaves we collected yesterday in the Fall Walk. I know this is set up for 2 year olds, by my 35 mo loves it as well as my 19 mo. I have found all of the projects simple and fun to do with my little ones. They love having their projects displayed around the house and telling their father of them when he gets home from school or work. I had never meant to homeschool any of my children. I wouldn't really know where to start but since finding this book I have realized just what a bounty of information is actually out there and this way I could teach my little ones everything they needed to know at their own pace instead of pushing them through just to be able to meet an outline that teaches my children absolutely nothing. My oldest has had to repeat Kindergarten because he couldn't keep up with the rest of the class. I mean, come on, Kindergarten? What happened to that just being a year of socialization and fun while learning the basics of our numbers, colors and the alphabet? I was totally shocked at the anger I received from his teacher when he didn't pass any of his entrance tests to Kindergarten when I didn't even know he had to take these tests. I certainly didn't when I was in Kindergarten. But this book, and the other two in the series have been a major help to me in building my own curriculum until I choose an accreditied Homeschool system just so my little ones will learn the basics. Besides, this is a wonderful time to spend with them, watching their little faces light up with the joy of learning. I have also found the Skills Concepts Checklist that was provided beneficial in gaging where my children were and if they are on time developmentally wise.

        Book Description

        Positive Discipline for Positive Results!
Caring for young children is one of the most challenging tasks an adult will ever face. No matter how much you love the child, there will be moments filled with anger, frustration, and even desperation. There will also be questions: Why does my child deliberately lie to me? Why won't she listen to me? Should I ever spank her when she is disobedient?
Over the years, millions of parents just like you have come to trust Jane Nelsen's Positive Discipline series. These books offer a commonsense approach to child-rearing that so often is lacking in today's world. Now completely updated to report the latest research in child development, Positive Discipline for Preschoolers will teach you how to use kind but firm support to raise a child who is responsible, respectful, and resourceful. You'll find practical solutions on how to:
·Prevent misbehavior through nonpunitive discipline—not punishment
·Avoid the power struggles that often come with the challenges of mastering sleeping, eating, and potty training
·Instill valuable social skills and positive behavior inside and outside the home by using methods that teach important life skills
·Employ family and class meetings to tackle discipline and developmental problems
        ·And much, much more!
"Once parents grasp and use the amazing power of Positive Discipline, their home will be transformed into a place of love and learning like no other."
—Joan K. Comeau, Ph.D., president, Family Information Services
"By leading parents in a natural direction of wisdom and responsibility, this book encourages trust in the parent/child relationship and asks the simple yet profound question, 'Given this particular situation, what will you do?'"
—Janice Lind Raun, M.A., family therapist

3 out of 5 stars Not be the best book for those using Attachment Parenting.......2007-09-18

There was a spot in the book that I didn't particularly like. It was about co-sleeping. Although it was claiming not to be putting down co-sleeping, it was definately inferring that it was better not too, I felt that it was putting the undertone suggestion that it wasn't the best thing. That children need to be able to self sooth etc...We are strong advocates for Attachment Parenting, and very researched in this area, and those related topics around it, and it is not correct to assume a child won't learn to sleep on their own, if not put in an alone situation, or that they will some how miss out on skill's like calming or soothing themselves, if you don't push them more quickly towards independence. Children will grow independent, on their own time table, and because of the attachment you unselfishly allow when they are young, which is not pulling away the security they need, they become more grounded, having been allowed to mature on their own, and reach towards independence step-by-step when they are ready, they grow up feeling secure. When children grow up feeling secure, that were not rushed into sleeping in their own bed, or forced to stop Breastfeeding before they are ready, etc... These people grow up more secure and independent than otherwise. Our Daughter just turned Three and still sleeps with me, and i'm in no hurry to move Her anywhere, and She's a very happy person, and, with no issues, and growing more and more independent on Her own, anyway, everyday : )

This does NOT mean that we put down any other Parents for anything they are doing, or whats right for them. Thats not what I mean. We have Friends that Parent in all different ways. I just wanted to say my peace about the co-sleeping, for some Families like us, it works, and has turned out to be a great experience, and I don't agree that it is some how any kind of a negative. For us it's a definate Positive!

5 out of 5 stars A great help in our household........2006-11-04

Jane Nelson once again provides sound, practical advice for creating a positive energy household. Our 4 year old had us spiralling out of control until we read this book and made some simple changes and became more understanding of her developmental capacities.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect helper when you need it most!.......2006-03-13

Our daughter has just turned three and wow, what happened? We feel like we have tried everything for discipline from time out to consequences and even the "S" word. Nothing really works. My friend recommended this book and it really does help. It's not the end all and be all of all books but it reminds you to think on their level and gives you good ideas for when you are faced with those very tough moments. I must say they suggest a positive time out, which I thought was CRAZY but figured I have tried everything else so why not? It really does work and continues to work. The best part is that I make it her choice and most times don't even have to get mad. I simply say, if you are going to behave that way (explaining the bad behavor, i.e. not playing nicely) please go to your time out corner until you are ready to come back and play nicely and sometimes she goes running in there crying (and then will return letting me know she is done and ready to play nicely) and sometimes she'll stop and think a moment and say, I don't need time out I can play nicely now. It's amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Great advice, but have support.......2005-09-27

Dealing with preschoolers, as any parent will tell you, is a challenge. How do you deal with this little being, that is both independent and dependent, at the same time? Nelsen, et al, have provided a common sense approach to raising preschoolers.

The ideas that are presented in this book, when used properly, are incredibly powerful. An example of this is recognizing the message being sent by the misbehavior of a preschooler. If you can identify what the message being sent is, then you have a greater chance of being able to redirect the behavior. Of course, you have to be willing to take the time to analyze the behavior and define what you are willing to do in response to the behavior. While the tools provided in this book are very powerful when used properly, they can also be very damaging when used improperly. If you have someone that can read the book with you and provide support, you will be much more effective at implementing the strategies successfully.

This book provides an idea for raising children without using humiliation or punitive measures to get short term changes in behavior. If you are looking for support for the, "My parents raised me this way and I turned out just fine." mentality, then find another book. If on the other hand, you are looking for a book that provides a basis for what I would consider to be an improved method of dealing with preschoolers, then this is your book.

The one thing that kept me from giving this book five stars is that it fails to address immediate safety issues. In many cases the book suggests plans that are implemented after you have had a moment to consider your response. It would be helpful if the authors provided some ideas as to how to respond to potentially dangerous situations without losing your cool and still treating your child as a human being who has control over their own actions.

WOW!! My 4 year old has been pushing me to the limits and all I kept thinking was that I was failing. This book has put so much into perspective for me and has given suggestions on how to handle situations. I don't yell as much and I don't get angry either. I have a better understanding of my daughter's mindset and it has helped with my 17 month old too!!
