Book Description
Rita Mae Brown and her inseparable co-author, that fabulous feline Sneaky Pie Brown, are together again in this triple-threat collection of mystery and manners, southern-style. In fact, the first three novels in the Browns' Mrs. Murphy bestselling mystery series are reprinted here in their entirety. Whether you are already familiar with the detective work of postmistress Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen and her tiger cat Mrs. Murphy or are new to the team, you are sure to be intrigued by their unique approach. It's murder with a touch of whimsy, all set in the cozy hamlet of Crozet, Virginia. Meet Harry's friends, neighbors...and suspects--folks like notorious society vamp Boom Boom Craycroft in Rest in Pieces, or the nice Miranda Hogendobber in Murder at Monticello, and get a good taste of Brown's wickedly observant take on manners below the Mason-Dixon line. Cat lovers, mystery aficionados, and anyone who might like an armchair visit to a delightful old town down South, is sure to enjoy these witty, cleverly-plotted tales of suspense.

Great book! I especially like the animal communication........2007-05-21
This is a great book. Well written and an easy read. I think this book would be great for all ages, teen and up, who likes a good mystery. The animals communicate with each other and with other animals throughout the stories. You definately want to read the books in order, though. One story refers to the ones before it. All in all, I'm glad I bought them and am looking forward to finishing this one and getting the next book of 3 stories in the series.

3 Great Books Together!.......2006-06-03
In "Wish You Were Here", we meet Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) and Mrs. Murphy (a tiger cat) and Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi). Harry is recently divorced and a postmistress in Crozet, Virginia a very small town. She has grown up there, and finds it difficult adjusting to life as a divorcee' in such a small town. Half of the town is on her side, the other half on the side of her ex, Fair Haristeen, a beloved local vet. It also doesn't help that Harry is constantly seeing Boom Boom Craycroft, the other woman who broke up her marriage. But working in the town's post office with her pets each day does offer its own diversions. One such diversion is reading post cards...something Harry has always done. When 2 prominent business people are killed after receiving graveyard postcards reading "wish you were here", Harry realizes there is a pattern to the killing. And when a good friend receives one, Harry springs into action to stop the killer in his/her tracks.
In "Rest In Pieces", the animals once again play a huge role in solving a murder. The main character, Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry), along with her two animal friends Mrs. Murphy (a gray tiger cat) and Tucker (a corgi) lead the way. When newcomer, Blair Bainbridge, rolls into town a lot of folks in Crozet, Virginia believe that trouble rolled in with him. The handsome bachelor turns many female heads, and Harry tries to convince herself that she has sworn off men since her divorce. When pieces of a dead body are found on Blair's property, tongues start to wag. And when more pieces of the body are discovered during the Harvest Ball, a tragic event from Blair's past comes back to haunt him. Has this "Yankee" brought murder to this sleepy small-town?
Having just finished reading the first book in the series, I admit it was much easier for me to follow the dialogue between the animals in this second installment. At first, I had a difficult time following the discussions between the animals, as it adds to the already large cast of characters. However, I adore the way the animals speak to one another! Their antics are charming, and I find that it adds a lot to this great series.
The mystery had me guessing until the end. Normally, I am able to figure out the mysteries pretty quickly (as many cozies give a lot of clues), but I was surprised at the ending. This is a great series, and I look forward to reading the extensive collection of books by this author (and Sneaky Pie, of course!).
In "Murder at Monticello", a body has been discovered in the slave quarters of the home of Thomas Jefferson. Since Jefferson has been dead for 170 years, it is impossible to question him about the man found dead from a blow to the dead. And when another recently murdered body is discovered, it becomes apparent that someone wants the secrets that have been buried with the body to remain so. Coming into question is the practice of slavery, and the descendants of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson had been rumored to have fathered a child by one of his slaves, and it appears that the man found murdered may have been also been involved with one of the slaves. The citizens of Crozet band together to prove that their beloved Jefferson had nothing to do with the murder or cover-up, and while doing so they unearth secrets that have been hidden in the town for over a century.
I have become a big fan of this series, and enjoy the banter between the animals. The relationships between the members of the town have been evolving, and I like the way that Harry is loved and embraced by the people who have known her all of her life. She works hard, cares for her animals, and genuinely cares for the town and its residents. I look forward to future books in the series, and am hopeful to see more of Blair as a potential love interest for Harry.
If you like the KoKo and Yum Yum series by Lilian Jackson Braun, give this book a try. Enjoy!
Lighthearted and fun!.......2004-08-15
This is a great introduction to the Sneaky Pie Brown series, especially if you are like me and absolutely HAVE to read a series in order. These are really fun, quick reads. The cats and dog have some serious attitude, and the citizens of Crozet, VA are people you would want for neighbors and friends, other than the odd murderer inhabiting the tiny town. To a certain extent, these stories are similar to that old show Murder, She Wrote, because you just wonder how Harry constantly becomes involved in murder investigations in an otherwise peaceful town. You would think people would start avoiding her to save their own lives. I only gave it four stars because the mysteries are too easy to figure out!
On my top ten list!.......2004-08-06
Oh gosh, I don't even know how to start. I picked up Claws and Effect, a later book in the series, at my school's library last year and within minutes of starting it I was gobbling it up! I mean, murder, southern gentry, small-town gossip, and talking animals!!!! HOW GREAT CAN LIFE GET!? AND the dog is a CORGI *I am a considerably HUGE corgi fan* Written with wit and whimsy, Rita Mae Brown is my third favorite author. I am currently finishing "Murder She Meowed" (I read them all out of order) and it is my favorite Mrs. Murphy mystery yet!!! Hilarious! A MUST READ!!!

An honory 5.......2007-10-11
I really don't know what to write to convey just how good this book was. The relationship between Neil and Maya, the leading characters, were real and I could "see" it unfolding before my eyes. It wasn't hard to believe that these two people would be and want to be together despite the race difference. Their romance was sweet and loving and passionate. It wasn't over the top, it was just two people trying to make it work an in every day world while being of the same race.
What I really like about the book was how Neil's daughter, Taylor, was actually in the book and the two characters spent time with her instead of her being shipped off to so and so and having sleeps over etc (yes, it happened..of course the characters had to be alone together but they spent just as much time with her (probably more) as they did apart from her). I ,also, liked how open and honest Neil and Maya were to each other and how there weren't miscommunication between them as that seems to be the main issue with most of the romance books I've read. And that the love they felt for each other was never a question and they didnt feel the need to deny it to "protect themselves"
The reason this book got a four was for a couple of reason. 1. Things were to said to have happened which were written not to happened (or rather she may have forgotten to put it in there). There are two instances of this. 2. I felt that the male relationship between Neil and his friend (cant remember his name) seemed false and not like how males would act with each other. And just as soon as he made an appearance he was gone. I would have liked for him to have been more a part in this book so Neil could have had a sounding board like she had with her sisters and family. Other than that this book is and should be a 5. Awesome book and I look forward to all her other books!
A great summer read!.......2007-06-21
The last book I read from this author, I didn't like so much so I went inot this read with a very critical eye. From page one, it had me. The book moves easily and reads smooth.
I feel in love with Nick, Maya, and Taylor and could relate to their relationship.
The ending is perfect.
If you want a quick pool side read or metro read this is for you.
Wishes Do Come True.......2007-06-16
I found this novel to be quite charming. This is the second novel I've read and enjoyed by Ms. Glass. I enjoyed the heated attraction between Maya and Nick. I enjoyed the blossoming relationship Maya had with Nick's daughter Taylor. I also enjoyed the very large, diverse, loving and supportive family that Maya came from. The way her family was portrayed throughout the story made you want to be apart of it and definitely read more about them in future novels. That being said, I thought Maya's character should have been stronger when dealing with the race issue considering her family background and how she was raised. I thought she should have fought a little harder when dealing with the negative issues that popped up in their relationship. I would have thought Nick would have had more trouble coping with their racial differences considering his background and his mother's negative attitude. But other than that little set-back, I thought it was a quick, sweet, romantic fairy tale.
Pretty good but I expected more........2007-01-17
Although I gave this book 3 stars..it was still hard to put down until I got to the end. I found the plot pretty interesting but the stroyline a bit weak. Never the less...I am a Seressia Glass fan and i will continue to read her books.
A Sweet, Romantic Story - A Keeper!.......2006-06-12
This was my first book by Ms. Glass, and I must say that she has a new fan. This was a very sweet, romantic story. It had the passion, angst and emotion that I like in romances but sadly don't see much of now days in many of the popular authors. What made it even better was the interracial aspect. It wasn't over the top or too preachy. It just told a story about two people trying to establish a relationship with other barriers than race being the main focus. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to other romance readers. I've found a new author to add to my collection.

Be careful what you wish for.......2006-06-30
A mysterious little man with curiously snake-like eyes comes to town. His boast is that he can give you anything - anything - that you wish for. Four villagers take him up on his offer, but he leaves them with a warning: "Take great care when you wish. For it will be granted exactly as you ask for it."
One by one, each of the townspeople use their wishes. One by one their wishes go haywire. Soon all of them have only one wish - for their wishes to be undone! Will they be able to find a way to undo their wishes? Or are the stuck forever under the spell cast by the little man with the snake-like eyes. . . ?

The wish giver is about three kids kids who go to a man called Thaudeous Blinn and get a wish card with a spot in the middle. All you have to do is put your thumb on the spot and make a wish. One girl wishes she was popular and got a lot attention. She then later starts to croak. Another girl wishes her boyfriend would plant his roots and stay in coven tree and stay forever. He ends up turning into a tree. A boy wishes his farm would have water throughout the whole farm. His wish goes wrong and the farm gets flooded. I like the book because of the excitment.

A MUST READ Lurlene McDaniel book!.......2005-08-22
A long time ago i read this book and it was the first LM book I ever read. I loved it!!! Lurlene McDaniel is my fave author and I'm pretty sure I've read all her books. What can I say?:Im a HUGE fan! her novels relate to real-life stories, so they are very sad but they make you wish you could help people who are suffering from diseases or a crisis like the characters in LM's books.
I knew that LM's books would take over me. cuz once i read this book, all 3 of the novels, my eyes got damp and thats when i knew. a book had never made me cry like that before. not ever
Best Book I ever Read.......2002-08-22
This is one of the best books that I have ever read, i was so into it, I finsihed the first story in less than 3 hours. It also helps with problems , the first story talks about cancer, and one of my loved ones is dealing with cancer, and it made me feel better afer I read it, these are very inspirational stories, and will show you that there is more to life than the little things.
Great Stories!.......2002-07-16
These stories truly went straight to my heart...every single one of them! Mainly because I could relate to all of them. In the first story, Sarah had leukemia and I once had a very good friend that went through all the same ordeals as Sarah. The second story I think I can relate to also because a couple of months back, I too was a candy striper at my local hospital because I had to get service hours for my church in order to be Confirmed, and just like Megan, I too went to the hospital everyday at first just wanting to get my hours done and go home, but after awhile, some of the patients that you visit with and get to know everyday have a very huge impact on you and your life sort of starts to revolve around them because you're constantly worrying about their health but, there's nothing you can do except listen to them talk everyday and try to cheer them up the best that you can. Then finally in the third story about Anne, I can also relate because just recently my distant cousin, whom I was very close with, passed away on account of HIV and the AIDS virus and I know the struggle she went through everyday because I was with her most days. Her and my friend, with leukemia, were also part of the reason I stuck with my candy striping job at the hospital because, like Megan put it, it gives you a great feeling of joy knowing that somehow you made a difference in someone's life and even though I'm only a sophmore in high school, I am already starting to make plans to someday attend Medical School and become a doctor so that I can keep making a difference in people's lives. So, thank you Lurlene for writing these beautiful and truly heart-warming stories that I would recommend to anyone and everyone!
Great Emotional Impact, even for an older person........2002-03-13
I just finished reading all three stories in this book, and I must say, Lurlene McDaniel still has the ability to create amazing and emotional stories for her readers. I have been a Lurlene McDaniel fan for many years, and it all began when I read "Six Months To Live". Her stories really bring to life the struggles that so many young people go through. All three of these stories had a major impact on me, but I think the greatest impact was brought on by "Sixteen and Dying". It's hard to explain why, exactly, but it did. At any rate, I think that any fan of Ms. McDaniel's, be they old, new, or never read any of her books before, should read these three stories.
One Last Wish.......2002-03-06
How will you feel if someone tells you that you only have six more months to live? What will you do if you discover that you are diagnosed with Leukemia? And how will you help a boy who has tons of wishes to fulfill in his life, but is dying because he needs an urgent liver transplant? In this novel, the author Lurlene McDaniel writes three touching and heart-warming stories all about teenagers diagnosed with life-threatening diseases. The first story, Mother Help Me live, describes an adopted child, Sara, suffering from Leukemia. In order for her to survive, she must find her birth mother. Readers read a long stream of struggling from Sara¡¦s disbelief in her adoption, up to the end when a shocking fact about her birth mother is revealed. The importance of love and family is showed¡Xfamily members will always love each other no matter if they are blood related or not. I am really touched by the story because I can almost feel how Sara is hurting mentally and physically, and how hopeless but optimistic her family is. In the other story, Sixteen and Dying, Ann discovers that she is infected with HIV. She has the opportunity to go to a ranch and spend her last wonderful times there, and she meets someone who changes her life. We can see step by step how angry and confused she feels when she knows she has HIV, and when she finally understands to accept what she can¡¦t change, face the reality, and live as happy as she can. These stories are all based on a person known as JWC generously donating checks to these ill teenagers, letting them use the money to accomplish what they want before they die. These novels have made me cry, and every time I start reading, I need a box of tissue beside me. Before, I always whined about how my life was horrible with all the homework and pressure from schoolwork. But after reading Lurlene McDaniels¡¦ stories and seeing how teenagers my age are suffering from much more than I am, I finally started to appreciate what I had, stopped complaining, and always thought on the bright side.

Book Description
A storyteller of unparalleled emotional intensity, bestselling author Barbara Delinsky has created a novel that resonates far beyond its extraordinary love story. Here is a tale of courage, community, and the magical consequences of being given a second chance.
What if wishes really could come true?
It's the question facing waitress Bree Walker when she awakens in the hospital following a blizzard in sleepy Panama, Vermont. While she can't recall the
near-tragedy that landed her there, she's overcome with the certainty that she has been granted three wishes. One seems to have come true already: at her side is renowned author Tom Gates, the accident's only witness, who had come to Panama to make sense of his fame -- and who now makes Bree his cause.
Suddenly, the things Bree has wanted most -- a home, a soul mate, a family -- are within her grasp. But are the wishes real? And if they are, what is their
price? As Bree and Tom consider what their hearts truly require, they discover that to live their dreams, they will have to take unimagined risks....

Powerful Ending.......2007-04-05
This tearjerker will draw you in and make you feel connected to the characters. You'll need the Kleenex while reading this book!
beautiful tearjerker.......2007-01-17
I loved this book very much. The story was grabbing and intriguing and I felt drawn and connected to the characters. While the ending is very sad and I didn't understand why it happened was affected really deeply, even though it was just a book, I felt that it was a really powerful ending. I understand how many people could dislike the book because of this, but I enjoyed the book so much. Any book that can make me cry that much obviously is well written.
And I think it's not very cool that B. Allen told everyone reading the reviews the ending. It was one of the biggest plot turns, and what is the point of anyone reading it now? You should at least write SPOILER on it.
Also, this was my first Barbara Delinksy book, and it did NOT turn me away from her. I'd love to read more.
WARNING - Not for anyone pregnant, ill, or depressed........2007-01-07
I must agree with B. Allen, I was very disappointed with the ending of this book. I would be very careful who I gave this book to. The ending is very sad (and might depress anyone, especially if they are pregnant or in the hospital). And not only sad, but I felt very cheated by it. I would like to think that if a "being of light" gave anyone three wishes, the outcome of those gifts from something so wonderful would turn out a lot better. But they were a rip off, and frankly, so is the book. Shame on you, Ms. Delinsky. You could have done a lot better with this book's premise.
What a disappointment.......2006-08-19
I went into this book wondering if the tragedies hinted at on the summary would be physical disabilities or something she would encounter after her accident. I was pleasantly surprised to find her doing so well and returning to a "normal" life. The interaction between her and Tom was really great and the descriptions of her near death experience were very interesting. Part of me had a feeling that this book would end in a bad way, but after she had the baby things seemed to be okay.
I was absolutely appalled to turn the page and read that she'd died - it was all I could do to finish it with the hope that somewhere it'd be a mistake and she'd come back. The book and not to mention my several days after reading it were ruined for me. I still can't get over this. It just feels like a cop out to end it that way - the wishes could have been worded better and it had the potential to be this really amazing uplifting story, but instead it failed miserably and I am still so bothered by the whole thing. I have 2 other Delinsky books that I am now avoiding because I can't take anything else of hers if I am going to feel this same way.
While I would give this 1 star to represent the anger and upset I am feeling towards this book, I only give it an additional star for the fact that the rest of the book was enjoyable.
Wishing for a different plot.......2006-03-23
The title and the town intreagued me, but the storyline was poor and way too much misery for an escapism novel. Think Nicholas Sparks, then take away his straight forward manner and add some purple prose and you have Three Wishes.

Book Description
Deborah Ellis's enormously popular Breadwinner trilogy recounted the experiences of children living in Afghanistan; now Ellis turns her attention to the young people of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. After visiting the region to conduct interviews, she presents their stories here — in their own words. Twelve-year-old Nora, eleven-year-old Mohammad, and many others speak directly about their lives — which prove to be both ordinary and extraordinary: They argue with their siblings. They hate spinach. They have wishes for the future. Yet they have also seen their homes destroyed and families killed, and live amidst constant upheaval and violence.
This simple, telling book allows young readers everywhere to see that the children caught in this conflict are just like them — but living far more difficult and dangerous lives. Without taking sides, it presents an unblinking portrait of children victimized by the endless struggle around them.

Good Magical Fun.......2006-08-28
In this collection of short stories, Turner treats readers to seven magical tales.
In "A Plague of Leprechauns," a small town is beset with leprechaun-hunting tourists whenever someone reports seeing one of the little green people. See what happens when a serious young artist arrives in town on the heels of a sighting.
"Leroy Roachbane" is a boy who is mysteriously thrown back in time to ancient Sweden. Asked whether he is a spirit or hero, he chooses hero. Soon after his arrival, there is a battle to be fought.
The "Factory" is a self-contained community in the middle of an unending city. John, the newest employee, is assigned a job operating a crane far above the factory floor. He soon learns that men rarely stayed in his position due to ghostly happenings.
"Aunt Charlotte and the NGA Portraits" is a fanciful tale, told by an old woman to her great-niece, of an adventure inside a painting.
"Instead of Three Wishes," Selene wishes to be left alone. The elf prince who promised her the wishes can't understand why she won't accept, so he tries to find ways to make her happy.
Kevin, your average school bully, is forced to live with "The Nightmare" after he and his pals try to frighten an old woman. Each night brings more fear until the dream can be overcome.
"The Baker King" is about a baker's apprentice who bears a striking resemblance to the late king's son. Will the young man's uncanny appearance help when outsiders threaten to take over the small kingdom?
Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and always fascinating, these stories will intrigue young readers with a taste for the unusual. Each tale is cleverly written and believable in its own way. Some parents may take exception to references to drinking, but it is not a predominant theme and would provide a good talking point between parents and kids later. (i.e.: The difference between social drinking in a local inn versus routine drunkenness.)
If your child is too young for Poe but too old for Cinderella, this is a fabulous choice.

A book for everyone.......2001-05-30
Instead of Three Wishes, by Megan Whalen Turner, is a book for everyone. It doesn't matter whether you are six or sixty-six; this book brings out the inner child in all of us. The clever plot twists and fantasy worlds keep your mind on edge. Instead of Three Wishes is composed of seven mystical short stories that will amaze you. The second story is entitled "Leroy Roachbane." This story involves a child named Leroy. Every morning Leroy woke up and went into his pantry to kill off any cockroaches before his mother entered. One day after his daily duty, Leroy went to the store to buy boric acid and roach motels. On his way home, Leroy's bike skid on an ice patch, and he was knocked unconscious. Leroy's mind began to wander, and took him to a place in many ways similar to his own life. When Leroy regained consciousness, he discovered something out of the ordinary. This story was incredibly entertaining and mind boggling, as is the next story. The third story is called the "Factory." In short, this story concerns a new employee that will work the high crane at a local factory. For some reason, this job has been vacant often. One day while the employee was reading on his lunch break, he saw another figure that seemed to also be reading. In actuality, the figure was the ghost of a little girl who once lived on the factory lot. This story takes what we think we know and twists it into the unknown. "Factory" makes you wonder if there is an afterlife, in a fun and lighthearted way. The fifth story is the title story. This story is in some ways similar to the first story in the book. It involves a student who helped an unrecognizable elf prince cross a busy intersection. In return the prince offers the student three wishes. THe student declines the offer and moves on. Over the next weeks, the student and her dis abled mother recieved a handful of gifts, which they decline. In the end, the perfect gift is evident, the offer was so thoughtful, and the student could not refuse. This story was very interesting to read because of the personal connections. Everyone has tried to find the perfect gift, and this story just pulls those emotions together in a magical way. The final story is entitled " The Baker King." i personally found this story to be the most humorous and entertaining. The story involves an island country without a king. The elderly king sent his only son off to boarding school, but no one thought enough to ask where. After a short while, the king passed away, and the island was without a leader. The king's court decided it would simply wait for a letter from the prince. After nine years, a letter was finally recieved. But it was not from the prince. It was from a wanted bandit. The letter prolaimed that the bandit would king himself once he and his gang arrived in the country. With little time to spare, the minister of cultural events, Orvis, went out one night and accidentally ran into a baker. Orvis was convinced that the baker could very easily pass as the king. In the end, the baker became king for a day, but then chose to return to the bakery. This story has many interesting, funny, and clever parts. "The Baker King", also has a nice overall theme. The story shows, that being rich and famous is not perfect for everyone. Overall, this book was an amazing read. I would recommend this to any person who enjoys questioning the obvious.

Wonderful!.......2000-10-07
I was intruiged by this book because of the especially creative cover, and the marvelous title. I feel that many books must have an intruiging title, and cover, while the reader in the beginning only sees the spine. This book had both. I began reading this short story collection, and was brought back to the edge of my seat with each story. A must-read!
