Sculpting A Galaxy has some 300 color photos spread over about 200 pages and is a large-format coffee table-size book. For true Star Wars fans, this is an interesting book, not so much a book to read but a book to page through when you've nothing better to do.

For those who have purchased the series of "Art of Star Wars" books, as well as "Star Wars: Sketchbooks" et cetera, this tome is impressive but not novel. Many photos from those earlier books are reused here. The problem is that they have been blown up for this larger format. Consequently, the blown-up recycled photos are slightly blurry. There are some wonderful photos of star destroyer details that have not been seen before...but is that enough to merit this huge new book? That decision is up to you, but I expected heretofore unseen, crisply focused photographs.
Great Content, Defective Copy.......2007-08-01
The actual content of the book is top notch, with many great shots model shots. I also enjoy the accompanying stories, from behind the scenes. The problem is, the binding was already coming apart when I received it. A beautiful book, marred by a crappy binding.

Compelling analysis of event and film.......2006-04-12
I saw Fr. John Bartunek (the author) give a presentation on The Passion of Christ (event and film) last night to a surprisingly packed (who knew so many people would show up on a Tuesday night to discuss a two-year old film?) university campus church auditorium of over 500 people (students and community members). His presentation, like his book, gives a fascinating and compelling account of the theology and symbolism that went into the making of Mel Gibson's film. The presentation was electrifying; the book is no less moving and thought-provoking. For example, there's a very short scene in the film when, in the midst of the horrific flogging of Christ, the camera turns to what appears to be a shot of a young mother with her infant child in the crowd. As the camera moves in on them, however, we find that the woman is not beautiful, but very odd and sinister, and the baby almost inhuman, as we see when it turns its head to give the viewer an evil smile. The symbolism: The woman represents the devil and the child his handiwork. Gibson takes an iconoclastic image of Beauty (Madonna and Child) and turns it into Evil (devil and inhuman offspring). The point:
Evil is not immediately identifiable as starkly evil; rather, evil is simply beauty that has become distorted and false. It tempts us into thinking it is one thing, when in fact it is quite something else. The significance, twofold: to illustrate the devil's role in the suffering and death of Christ and, perhaps more importantly, to show that when Christ is at his weakest (including in modern society), the devil gains a foothold. Interesting tidbit: Gibson used a beautiful actress as the devil, had her head and eyebrows shaved, and used makeup to turn her into something very un-beautiful. And this was only one 20-second scene! The examples go on and on. As a liberal-minded Catholic unhappy with the "culture wars" surrounding so many issues today, I was pleased to see that this film had no agenda other than to relate the Gospel story with the major theme being Christ's love for all humanity, including not only us simple sinners but also those who beat, mock, and kill him, in various ways. It's an invigorating story and makes the book well worth reading.

Inside the Passion is a behind the scenes peek at how the movie was made. It explains why certain things were shown and is surprisingly useful as a meditation tool.
A lot of folks flipped out because they thought the scourging and crucifixion scenes were too strong. The book explains why Mel Gibson and his team decided that they were not going to sanitize the Passion the way other movies had in the past.
Some folks nitpicked becuase Gibson and the team decided to have Jesus speak Latin to Pilate but the book shows that they made this decision for pretty sensible reasons: 1. The Romans had been in Palestine for 40 years. In Gallilee, which was heavily gentile by that time, a smart person must have been roughly familiar with Latin if for no other reason than that it was important to know how high to jump when a Roman soldier demanded that you do so. 2. Jesus was God. He could've spoken in any language He chose when He decided to speak to Pilate's ignorance.
Finally, the great strength of this book is that it so closely follows the movie step by step that even if you never saw the film after reading the book you will understand it. This is an excellent work and I plan to buy more copies as gifts.
Explanation of the Passion for everyone .......2005-09-06
This book is written so clearly that almost anyone should have no trouble understanding the way Father John Bartunek, a Legionary of Christ (Roman Catholic Religious Order), clarifies the different aspects of Christ's Passion as is portrayed by Mel Gibson in his movie. Father John spent time on the set, watching as Mel filmed this great epic and has not only interesting insights into the filming of the movie, but also clarifies the main points, as well as details of the entire Passion of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. The movie is well worth rewatching ... as you read Inside the Passion and you will see it in a new light every time. Our Lord's Passion speaks to each of us individually, touching our hearts anew and calling us to a real Love, that comes from Christ Himself. This is a great book and a great gift for anyone at any stage in their faith.
A Great Book!.......2005-07-20
This book is actual written by John Bartunek. He is a priest with wonderful insites. He speant a great deal of time on the set when it was being filmed and during the editing. This is a great companion to the movie.
I Loved this book so much I bought a copy for my mother and myself as well- and I will probably being buying them for a few people I know this year (just before) Easter.
I Hope that he writes more books in the future.
Intimate with Christ and Mel.......2005-07-11
I bought this book for my Dad, but opened it up last night and couldn't put it down. The book is only 186 pages, but it's not a quick read. It makes you think. It brings up insights I never thought about, Mel Gibson's 12 years of meditating on Christ's Passion have born a lot of fruits. Read it for yourself.

Who really needs this book?.......2006-07-13
I initally bought this book because the insane amount of detail that went into the artwork and I thought I might be able to use the visuals for ideas in a Star Wars RPG campaign. While It might have been useful, our group scrapped playing SWRPG and went back to playing D&D. I don't know where the book is now, but I don't really care. I looked at it once. Now I realize that was all I needed.
With the gorgeous illustartions, these pages are better off being posters, because I can't imagine anyone seriously using these as refernce material for anything else. They just look cool. It's worth about 10 minutes of looking at the intricate designs, and then you set it down and question why the heck anyone would care which way the wampa went.
It's basically a coffee table book if you want to show off how geeky you are.

I mistakenly thought that this book was also going to describe some of the actual outdoor movie set locations of where various exterior scenes were filmed, but it is actually a well-presented and detailed description of all of the various ficticious locations in Star Wars episodes IV,V,& VI from the fantasy point of view.
The exterior views and also the cut-a-way illustrations, maps of planets,and their detailed descriptions of Star Wars space technology are amazing in detail and descriptive content.
It is a pleasurable study of the Stars Wars Planets,Cities,and buildings and other space-related ships and other story-related structures for those who love the technical points of things like I do. Someone went to alot of trouble to produce this very definitive work, and I appreciate that kind of technical diligence as seen in this most enjoyable book.
Enjoyable but DK need better proof readers.......2005-01-18
I have enjoyed reading the DK series of books on Star Wars worlds and vehicles and once again they do not disappoint with an amazing level of detail. One really does appreciate the time and patience the artists and writers put into each illustration. Each illustration often contains additional material explaining events that happened off camera (i.e. as characters travel from place A to place C, something occured at place B). Some events I recognised from the original screenplay and deleted sequences(such as the Tosche station / Biggs sequence). Not being a hard core Star Wars fan, I have no idea where the others can from, beyond their being ideas that were tossed around during pre-production.
The copy I have was let down by some unprofessional publication flaws, notably incomplete sentences that trailed off into nothing (this occured about three times).
I am not an expert on Star Wars but there were one or two things that caused me to wonder, particularly the reference to C-3PO and Anakin's lightsaber on Tatooine which I thought may have contradicted something I read on the Star Wars site about droid memory erasure.
The book also vaguely fleshes out a few interesting "links" in the twenty or so year gap between the events of the current triology and the original triology of films, notably with reference to Yoda.
Recommended for fans of the Star Wars films (five stars if DK fix the typos).
A Documentary Delight!.......2004-10-02
This is the third book in the "Inside the World's of Star Wars" series. All of them are absolutely incredible! They take you on an in depth tour of the locations in the "Star Wars" galaxy. If you have ever looked into the background while watching the "Star Wars" movies, and wondered about the complex environments depicted by George Lucas, this book is for you. It gives complex detail about every aspect, of every location, of every scene from the movies. It show's you all of the location's on Tatooine, the Yavin base, the Death Stars, Eco Base, Yoda's hut, the Ewok village, and much, much more. Anyone curious about the colorfull worlds of the "Star Wars Trilogy" should purchse this book. For much more information on the variety of characters from "Star Wars," the "Visual Dictionary" series is also a must have, and to go in depth with the ships and technology, "Star Wars, the Incredible Cross-Sections" is another great series from DK.

Where does a Jedi go to unwind? Why, to a Contemplation Station, of course. The Jedi Temple on Coruscant has three of them.
But you'd already know that if you had Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I, yet another lushly illustrated and obscenely detailed Star Wars reference from the folks at DK Publishing. Much like their other excellent cross-section books, most of which focus on vehicles, this title pulls apart Episode I's exotic locales, from Otoh Gunga to the N-1 hangar in Theed to poor Anakin and Shmi's pathetic excuse for a home in Mos Espa.
Each illustration includes a few paragraphs of background information (along with some well-chosen stills from the movie in some cases), but the meat is in the copious call-outs pointing to minute details that would otherwise go unnoticed. In the honeycomb of "species-friendly" offices surrounding the Senate, for example, you can see the Wookiee napping rooms (oh, the Jedis only wish that they had hammocks in their Contemplation Stations) and learn about re-orgs in the Neimoidian diplomatic corps ("To enforce competitiveness, Neimoidians assign identical work to two teams of worker drones, with the incentive that the successful team eats the other").
The book's biggest set piece is a fold-out rendering of the Mos Espa Arena, but fans will likely enjoy the diagrammed blow-by-blows of Episode I's most dramatic scenes even more: What route did the Queen and her retainers take as they scurried through occupied Theed? Exactly how and where did the Trade Federation deploy its droids? And which turn is the tightest on the Boonta Eve Classic? Thanks to DK, it's all there in meticulously drawn detail. --Paul Hughes

An excellent book! I have all of the titles in this series and plan to purchase Inside the Worlds of the Classic Star Wars as soon as it comes out. I think that they could have gone a little bit more in depth with this book, but you're talking to a Star Wars freak who could never get enough. I also think that The Attack of the Clones edition could have been longer, but overall, a wonderfull book of detailed maps and explanitory paragraphs.

An indepth review of the Episode 1 locations which are quite impressive, such as the Mos Espa arena and the Theed royal palace. An extention of the Pictorial Directory and Cross Sections, this book really explains alot of how why and where things happened in this first chapter of this tail.

Finally, a cross-sections that gives the audience a look inside the buildings of Star Wars! Why they waited so long to release it is anyone guess, but the wait is over. If you've read my reviews for the other cross-sections books then you know how much I love cross-sections. That said, Inside The Worlds Of Episode 1 breathes new life into The Phantom Menace. Particular favorites of mine include Otoh Gunga, Watto's junkshop, the Galactic Senate building, and the Jedi Temple. Not only does the book talk about particular locations in the movie, but also the very planets that the movie is set on: Naboo, Tatooine, and Coruscant. Inside The Worlds Of Episode 1 is full of wonderful illustrations and is packed with amazing information. Indeed, it's the chosen one...of cross-sections books, that is.
Extraordinary! An amazing idea for a book w/ incredible art.......2002-06-02
I just saw this book yesterday. I don't think it was marketed as much as the other books. That's a shame because it's magnificient.
I am truly blown away by the content and pictures of the locations from Episode I. The art is unbelievable. The detail level is extreme and it must have taken an enormous amount of time for these two artists to complete this work. Every detail you could possibly want is here.
This is a lot like the Star Wars Cross-Section books of the ships only it is not as technical. Imagine those books but for the locations and you have a pretty good idea of what this is.
What's really great is how you get to look at things from angles that the film doesn't show you. The long shots really put everything into scope. You also get to see areas that you can't in the movie such as this place Watto can fly up to above his countertop in the junk shop. I can't wait to study this book some more and then rewatch The Phantom Menace again. I believe I'll look at it in a whole new way.
My fingers are crossed for an Episode II version. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Extends Your Knowledge of Star Wars Beyond the Movies.......2000-11-19
Have the ultimate experience of The Phantom Menace by extending your understanding with this book.
This book is an excellent expansion of the basic story line of Episode I. Based on reading it, you will have much more appreciation for that movie and the later ones in the series.
The book contains star charts to show you where key planets are located (like Naboo, Tatooine, Coruscant, Alderaan, Corellia), which makes many of the plots much easier to understand.
Beyond that benefit, you get detailed maps of each of the planets where action occurs in Episode I. This allows you to see how the various story lines relate to each other spatially. For example, you can see how the Gungan capital of Otoh Gunda relates to the Naboo capital of Theed. In the case of Naboo, this is supplemented with a geological cutaway of the planet to show you how the two capitals are connected by the ocean.
Next, each city is also mapped. So you see the details of Otoh Gunda, Theed, Mos Espa on Tatooine, and the central area of Coruscant. Then specific buildings and space ships are also shown in cutaways. These include the Droid control ship, Watto's junkshop, Anakin's hovel, the Jedi Temple, the Imperial Senate, and the arena for pod races on Tatooine.
Action sequences are then detailed so that you can see where and when each step takes place. This is done for the duel with Darth Maul and Jedi Qui-Gon Jiun and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Theed palace generator. You also get the battle between the droids and the Gungans. But the best is the full map of the pod race course, with annotations for where each major part of the race's events occurred.
All of these maps are enlivened by detailed notes on the geology, technology, and history of the places displayed. There are many references to Senator Palpatine and the sources of power on Naboo that will be of interest. I thought the expanded information about the Gungan city was especially well done.
The illustrations are new in many cases, which also adds to the reader's pleasure.
My only complaint is that there are several pages with no new information and no interesting detail. An editor should have taken this out or substituted better content. The only argument in their favor is that they help remind you of the story's continuity.
This must have been a lot of fun to create. My suggestion is that you take another story you like and make a similar series of maps and notes. If you have children or grandchildren, this could be a fun project to do together. You might consider Alice in Wonderland as a first subject. Or if you have a friend who loves Star Wars, you could expand on Episode I or any of the other stories in the same way.

Great Book on Great Cinema.......2006-11-05
As a big fan of Russian, Japanese and French cinema this valuable book helps fill the void, at least in Russian Cinema.
Some great names here and lesser known artists. The study of the films are candid and uncompromising...yet Mr. Gillespie gives a very solid and balanced account.
Many Russian classics are shot in Black and White and have a style all their own. Most are very surprising to Western audiences in that they break tabboo's often considered common. Read the book and then try to see the films...you shall be plesantly surprised...and deeply moved.

I got this book for my husband who loves cats. We have three - two black Lamont Cranston, Dust Bunny and one that is white with a couple black stops Wendi Darling.
The book was very touching and so typical of cats. The pictures were lovely. It was a bit sad, but I enjoyed it before I sent it to him.

This is an absolutely delightful, touching story that is visually beautiful and cleverly executed. All of us cat lovers have experienced elusive cats that we would like to have closer to us. Friends of mine live in a Victorian house that looks a whole lot like the one in the story, and they have a cat in their yard they feed who won't come inside. (Fortunately we live in California so no snow to contend with, as in the book.) When I heard about this book in Cat Fancy magazine I bought it to give them but wanted to keep it too. You can't miss if you buy this book.

As a feral cat activist, I was really impressed with this book as an introduction to the idea that not all cats want to be -- or belong -- indoors. They SHOULD all be provided shelter and food (and spay/neuter and vaccinations -- but that's a whole other book!), and most importantly, they deserve our love and respect. This book teaches that concept in a beautiful, sweet way. Ultimately, it shows us how much we can learn from animals if we just listen...
A sweet, beautiful story with remarkably creative illustrations.
