Book Description
“TRACY HOGG HAS GIVEN PARENTS A GREAT GIFT–the ability to develop early insight into their child’s temperament.”
–Los Angeles Family
When Tracy Hogg’s Secrets of the Baby Whisperer was first published, it soared onto bestseller lists across the country. Parents everywhere became “whisperers” to their newborns, amazed that they could actually communicate with their baby within weeks of their child’s birth. Tracy gave parents what for some amounted to a miracle: the ability to understand their baby’s every coo and cry so that they could tell immediately if the baby was hungry, tired, in real distress, or just in need of a little TLC. Tracy also dispelled the insidious myth that parents must go sleepless for the first year of a baby’s life–because a happy baby sleeps through the night. Now you too can benefit from Tracy’s more than twenty years’ experience. In this groundbreaking book, she shares simple, accessible programs in which you will learn:
• E.A.S.Y.–how to get baby to eat, play, and sleep on a schedule that will make every member of the household’s life easier and happier.
• S.L.O.W.–how to interpret what your baby is trying to tell you (so you don’t try to feed him when he really wants a nap).
• How to identify which type of baby yours is–Angel, Textbook, Touchy, Spirited, or Grumpy–and then learn the best way to interact with that type.
• Tracy’s Three Day Magic–how to change any and all bad habits (yours and the baby’s) in just three days.
At the heart of Tracy’s simple but profound message: treat the baby as you would like to be treated yourself. Reassuring, down-to-earth, and often flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer promises parents not only a healthier, happier baby but a more relaxed and happy household as well.

Saved my quality of life.......2007-10-11
This book is a life saver for new moms or moms struggling with babies sleep patterns. I thought I was loosing it until my father gave me this book. A short easy to implement program to train your baby to sleep regularly.
Terrible! Not based on any science.......2007-10-02
I bought this book when my baby was four months old. I tried every technique in there (early waking, cluster feedings) and nothing helped. I ended up baby "Happy Child, Healthy Sleep Habits" and he basically debunked all her theories with science and baby sleep studies. I tried his theories and now I have a great baby who developed into a toddler that sleeps so well! This book is seriously a waste of time, I need to sell mine or give it away. This woman has no real or scientific experience with babies, I would love for to come to my house and use it on my child, because I will promise you that her stuff doesn't work. Plus, at nine months, giving cluster feedings won't help, babies wake up at that age because of habit or neurology, not because they're hungry. It was just such a waste of money!
The Best Baby Book Ever.......2007-09-27
I was given this book as a gift and have since purchased it for everyone I know who is having a baby. Great Book!!
best book.......2007-09-20
i buy this book for all my friends who are having babies. this book is just incredible. i followed it and my daughter slept through the night at six weeks. i couldn't have been more pleased. too bad i didn't have it when my son was born....
WORTH EVERY CENT!!!!
i agreed with everything in this book! a must for first time moms and dads........2007-09-18
i picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend, and i was not disappointed. the author is a baby nurse and has a "special" way with newborns and infants, and is passing along her wisdom and experiences in this book. i found myself agreeing with everything she had to say, and have implemented her "e-a-s-y" way of caring for infants with my new baby. i also agree with the s-l-o-w technique to determine what your baby might need (why are they crying?), to avoid stuffing a pacifier in their mouth at the first sign of fussiness. one thing to note, my baby is a "textbook" baby, and it was fairly simple for us to implement these techniques. for people with colicy or super fussy babies, using this book may be more difficult and take longer to implement. ultimately, i totally agree with giving a baby a routine (not an inflexible schedule), and for treating babies like the people they are, and respecting them and their personal space. i highly recommend this book!
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The last thing new parents can find time for is quiet reading, so many helpful books on infant care rely on bullet points and a "let's get to the point" writing style. Tracy Hogg, a neonatal nurse, teacher, and mother of two, uses these techniques to good effect in Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Focusing on newborns and their parents, her simple programs are a blend of intelligent intuition and methods based on years of experience. The first half of the book is devoted to E.A.S.Y--her name for creating a structured daily routine for you and your baby that makes the most of your baby's awake times and also leaves time just for you. These concepts aren't designed to force your bundle of joy into not following her body's needs, but rather to create a feasible middle ground between total rigidity and on-demand food and sleep (and no time for mom to shower). If it still strikes you as too regimented, keep reading. The author makes room for differences in personal style and includes short quizzes to determine whether you're a "planner" or a "winger", and what level of daily structure you are likely to find helpful. In the same chapter, she identifies five general temperaments of infants, how to get an accurate feel for yours, and what methods of care are likely to be the most effective for his temperament. Her statement that babies prefer routine is backed up by research from the University of Denver. While most of the book relies on anecdotes to get the points across, Hogg does find room to back up some of her statements with quotes from various researchers and institutions. Included at the end of the book are assurances that E.A.S.Y. can be followed even with a colicky baby or one who's been ruling the roost for the first few months. Frustrated parents might like to read the last page first: "all the baby-whispering advice in the world is useless unless you're having a good time being a parent" is an excellent reminder to enjoy this time with all of its ups and downs. --Jill Lightner

Some good information.......2007-08-29
I did get some vital information on putting my kiddo to sleep. But her advice drove me insane when I tried to apply it to a new born! He was just too young at 1 week to perform under her requirements and I felt like a terrible mother with an abnormal kiddo. Now that he is older (2 1/2) months much of what she writes about independence and getting your kiddo to sleep is helpful. When my son was 1-4 weeks his schedule was *his* schedule and I really just had to be there for him. I still co-sleep even though Hogg advises against it and I still like to put my kiddo to sleep in my arms. He sleeps in noisy rooms and quiet ones. The list goes on. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING A WELL READ NEW PARENT CAN TAKE FROM THIS REVIEW IS THIS: read all you can even Hogg's book but always keep your instincts when it comes to raising your baby, no author is you and no one person can know your baby on a personal and visceral level the way you do. On the breastfeeding....I think her tips on the actual act of breast feeding are wonderful as for the politics I could not disagree with her more. This is a very politically and emotionally charged issue no matter your position. As for her being responsible for whether or not a woman chooses to breast feed by the opinions expressed by Hogg in this book: I do not agree. If it takes so little for a mother to quit breast feeding then maybe she just was not cut out for it. I *knew* breast feeding was the best for my kid so I do it...period. Some women just cannot or will not go the extra mile no matter what they read.
Try and read this before the baby arrives.......2007-08-28
This book has been great for us and I believe this is largely because we read it before the baby was born and started implementing Hogg's techniques immediately. Having read both Sears/AP and Ezzo parenting books as well, we have found Hogg's methods to be a great middle ground. The EASY method is working great for us. I love her chapter on Awake activities and appropriate playing at different ages and stages. She breaks down bathing and massage techniques, as well. Her advice on using a pacifier makes so much sense. And, of course, the easy to follow charts that allow you interpret and respond to your baby's cries and movements are excellent.
Best of all though is the confidence we have in putting our baby down to sleep - because we started this from day one we were able to implement Hogg's techniques that allow us to put the baby in her crib while sleepy but still awake and watch her gently drift off to sleep on her own. Our baby has been learning how to self sooth since day one and it's amazing to watch her.
Great information.......2007-08-18
This book was recommeded by my OBGYN. I read a few other books but found Tracy's information and advice useful and accurate. I found her writing style to be enjoyable--like reading a good novel, therefore, I retained the information; rather than trying to recall what you should do in a particular situation.
What a great resource.......2007-08-10
I have a 3 month old baby boy and I would highly recommed this book. In fact, I wish I had read this book earlier because it would have saved me a lot of stress. Tracey's insight is really helpful and I feel that I've connected with my baby much better since reading this book. She also provides a lot of support to women who choose not to breastfeed. I was feeling guilty for not breastfeeding especially since my son had formula issues but Tracey help to put things into perspective about it being a very personal choice and there being nothing wrong with choosing formula feeding.
The best money you will ever spend!.......2007-08-10
This book changed my life.. for the first 8 weeks of my new baby I thought I was going to crack up. I had read that babies shoudl sleep a lot and therefore it confused me that my little one did not. It was not because she didn't like sleeping, it was because I was not reading her cues and not knowing what to expect. This book explains it all very easily and actually it is all down to common sense.. i.e reading your baby and knowing what is wrong. As soon as i read the book i could see where i was going wrong and as soon as i put my little pone on the recomended routine, my life changed forever.. she slept for long periods during the day, all night long and basically became a dream child. It is all about common sense and once you get over the initial hurdle of trying to find time to read the book, your life will be chnaged forever!

knowledge is power!!!!!!.......2007-09-22
I did not follow the book to the word, but I sure did pick up some tips that have really helped. I thought my baby hated to be swaddled, because she would kick off the blanket all the time, the book stated that babies like to swaddled, so I gave it another shot, this time swaddling her in the front and in back, so she was more secure, and it really worked!!! That alone was worth the buy. Plus I learned how to read her signals that she was tired. If you pick up a tip here and there from a book it's worth it.
It worked for me..........2007-09-21
GENERAL COMMENT: Like every baby book I read, I try to keep an open mind. You will NOT find a book that will work for ALL babies but this book worked for mine, who I think is a text book baby.
SITUATION: I was going back to work and my baby was super needy at 6 weeks-- wanted to be helded all the time. He won't nap if I wasn't holding him. And at night, I would rock him to sleep and put him into his crib very very gently when he has fallen into DEEP sleep. Otherwise, he would CRY. But that was my fault because I HELD him alot. This would be fine if I was a stay at home mom...but if even I was, I think it would have taken it's toll on me at some point.
LIKE: I like this book because it helped with getting my baby on a good routine, nap longer, sleep on his own, and sleep longer through the night. I made my own version of the EASY plan, customize it to my baby and what worked for me...this book afterall is not the BIBLE.
RESULTS: By about 8-10 weeks, he was sleeping from 7:30-8 pm to about 4:30 am (with 1 dream feed). Now at 5 months, he sleeps from 8pm to about 7am (with 1 dream feed). He use to nap about 30 minutes at a time. After the plan, he started napping for 2 hours (slightly shorter now since he is older). He LIKES his crib and falls to sleep in about 20-30 minutes of laying down...without ANY fuss. And he is a happy healthy little boy who is 50% for weight and 80% for height.
TRANSITION PERIOD: This didn't happen overnight. I would try for a week or two and revisit the book about a thousand time to make sure I wasn't doing it wrong. He would progess and go back to his old self and progress some more. After about 2 weeks, I customize the plan. You WILL be glad to get some time for yourself and hubby when the baby goes down to sleep in the evening instead of at night. He sleeping pattern gradually falls into place. I don't believe in cry it out so the SHH/PAT worked for me. It was hard and I gave up several times. But it worked before you know it. Just give it your best try and be PATIENT AND CONSISTENT. Even now when he takes a little longer to get to sleep, I still PAT/SHH and he is out.
DON'T LIKE: The tone of the author can be a bit annoying (KNOW IT ALL) but after all, she is a super nanny and have worked with THOUSANDS of babies. This book made me PARANOID as a parent--thinking that I would just ruin my child if I made any wrong moves. But we all turned out okay and our parents didn't have this book.
CONCLUSION: Your instinct as a mom is truly the best guide but sometimes, it does get you into situations that are difficult to overcome. This book helped me better manage my baby's sleep/eating which are the biggest parts of his life. Life is so much less HECTIC for MOM, BABY and DAD.
GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO "CRY IT OUT!".......2007-09-09
I'm on my 2nd child, my first slept though the night from early age, and was a very easy baby to care for. But my 2nd baby was a different story! According to the BW, he is Spirited. This book helped me to help him to take regular naps and be on a good routine, with NO crying it out alone in the crib. (He is 6 months old). I read Babywise book before this one and found it WAY too strict for my spirtied boy. We are still working on sleeping through the night, but i have hope that we can accomplish that soon!
Good common sense.......2007-09-03
I didn't like the idea of "recipe" parenting, but some of Ms Hogg's tips worked very well on our 5-month old, who is now sleeping 11-12 hours every night. I like her approach to behavioral issues, especially in toddlers. The tone is quite condescending, but if you can get past that, its a good read.
Andrew & Kim.......2007-08-27
I'm actually on Amazon today because I'm going to buy this for a colleague who is having her first baby. This book was absolute lifesaver. Like most new parents we had absolutely no idea what the baby wanted and way too much old school advice from well-meaning friends and family. We agreed to try this book for two weeks and there was never a question as to how great the advice was.
We agree with some of the other reviews about the author's tone. Fortunately, you cannot argue with the results. Her methods were spot on accurate and our children immediately adapted to the EASY schedule.
Thanks Tracy!

Imagine a cheeky, less starchy Mary Poppins in the trenches with you and your toddler. British trained nurse and childcare consultant Tracy Hogg draws upon the key ideas in her bestselling, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer and applies them to those magical and challenging years between infancy and preschool.
Hogg offers parents of toddlers clear theory and techniques described in a supportive, crisp tone, often addressing parents as "luv" or "ducky." Before trying any techniques, she urges parents to "love the toddler you have" by understanding his or her unique temperament, gifts, and special needs.
That said, Hogg introduces specific tools for engaging and managing toddlers. These include "H.E.L.P." (hold back, explain, limit, praise); "R&R" (routines and rituals to create structure and celebration), and "behavior rehearsals" (a plan to prepare toddlers for new experiences). Other chapters focus on "respectful intervention" to avoid acting out and plans to protect parents' private time. By seasoning her advice with anecdotes, sidebars, quizzes, and abundant good humor, Hogg offers companionship and common sense for parents during the toddler years. --Barbara Mackoff

toddler help found here.......2007-04-20
this isn't as good as the baby whisperer, or maybe it's just not as insightful, but that's likely due to the fact that i don't need as much guidance now as the parent of a toddler as i did when i had a newborn and read the baby whisperer. i like that she has a quiz in the beginning of this book, as she did in "baby." it really helped me get in touch with some issues & forced me to concentrate- which can sometimes be difficult when you have a frazzled day parenting a toddler. as i did in the baby whisperer book, i'll take the quiz again later and see how my child has changed and what i need help with then. ms. hogg is very nurturing and calming. i'm so sad to hear that she died. i was heartbroken, because i was really looking forward to her help in a few years when my toddler becomes a teenager!

This lady is brilliant.......2007-03-11
I have to tell you after reading the Baby Whisperer there was no way that I wouldn't have bought this book. It has given both my husband and myself great insight into the mind of our 14 month old and I'm sure it will help even more as the toddler years progress.
Solid Plan.......2006-07-15
I'm smack in the middle of reading this book, but I've done so much scanning of it, I've checked out what the book has to offer. I really feel like this book gives solid plans for many toddlers' routines. It's true that much of what she says is "common sense", but also a lot of it is stuff I wasn't thinking at the time I read it, so it gave me great ideas. I esp. liked her plans for bathing, eating, and diapering. I wish now that I had payed more attention when I read her baby edition.
common sense...but couldn't we use a little more of that?.......2006-07-13
I like Tracy Hogg...and after reading her first book I was compelled to try this one as well. Although a lot of her wisdom is really common sense, it's always good to get a refresher. It's easy to get caught up in being tired and emotional as the mom of a toddler, so this book made me take a deep breath and re-evaluate my actions. I recommend it to all new moms!

Book Description
Spirit Whisperers are "way showers." They show us that education can be much more than ranking, rating, and judging our unique children. They remind us that shame-based, right/wrong, competitive doctrines do not work in today's schools and are not working in our society. They help us see that the test makers have shaped their tests and now the tests are shaping us, determining much of what we value as educators and citizens. They help us stay conscious of the notion that real education has nothing to do with covering content. Education is now and has always been a drawing out of what already exists within the student rather than a putting in of what we see as necessary to fill perceived deficiencies.
Spirit Whisperers give us hope. They help us create a vision of an educational system that doesn't perceive failure. that grants dignity without it needing to be earned, that recognizes punishment as serving the needs of the punishing adult rather than those of the student, that holds the child in a state of grace, even as appropriate consequences are implemented. They help us see the value of treating every child as special without the limiting beliefs of "best" and "better". Spirit Whisperers help us lift our eyes, our hearts, and our spirits to see and remember again what is possible when the main purpose of education becomes the creation of who and what we choose to be.

This book should be part of the teacher's training.......2007-05-17
I bought an extra copy of this book to give to the Vice-principal of my grandchildren's elementary school. It seems educators today are more interested in the AIMS scores than in the development of our children. Thank you Chick for this inspirational, educational, directional masterpiece!
Spirit Whisperers--WOW.......2006-08-17
Excellent-inspirational says it mildly! Anyone who teaches should read this book and keep it on their shelf for a handy reference.
Awesome!.......2006-08-10
What a wonderful reminder of what we all should be doing with children not for them!!

A waste of money and time........2007-03-01
This book was intended for Dr. Spock of the Battleship Enterprise because it does not deal with the one basic thing that makes us all human: emotions. It is completely void of any documentation to back up any of his theories, and has barely any practical situations illustrated in this book to implement them either. It is full of ethereal mumbo-jumbo with no scholastic backing; just his opinions from his experience with children, which are anecdotal.
I would instead recommend, "The Explosive Child: A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children," which has a more practical approach to dealing with children with severe behavioral problems.
Don't Buy This Book.......2006-06-03
The author has no credentials to suggest that he offers expertise in parenting. He has no degree in child development or related field, and the ideas he presents are simple ideas that, while some may be true, are not his. He takes ideas from the broader field of child development and presents them as his own. I'd suggest buying a book written by someone with a degree related to children and with demonstrated expertise in child rearing. Personnally, for parents who want easy (non-academic) reading, I'd suggest books by Dr. William Sears. The book lacks substance and has not been edited or reviewed by anyone with expertise.
Outstanding book for parents of Asperger's Syndrome kids.......2005-06-02
I found Mr. Pasquinilli's book gentle and quite effective for my Asperger's son and our family. Eye contact, respect, low voices--perhaps things we should all automatically know as parents, but we don't. Our lives are so busy we sometime forget to 'connect' with our children--this book will help tremendously.
Small book, simple and effective solutions to seemingly complicated issues.
BUY THIS BOOK, you won't regret it.
P.S. The tripe by one reviewer complaining that this book is not published by a big mass-market publishing house is petty. Who cares? It is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it, as do many other resources.

Improves communication between children and adults. This is an awesome book. Full of advice and moral teaching. Good gift for Christian parents looking for help raising active children.
SImple and It Works!.......2005-01-11
"The Child Whisperer" is a easy to read book that helps parents to understand what makes their children do the things they do sometimes.
This book also is good for learning a new way to talk to your child and to other adults too.
