Product Description
Birth - 18 months. A straight-forward and light-hearted approach to teaching infants how to communicate using simple American Sign Language (ASL) signs.
Amazon.com
Sign with Your Baby Complete Learning Kit will enable you to communicate at new levels with your baby long before she can speak. This comprehensive package of book, video, and reference guide shows how simple gestures can communicate ideas like "I'm hungry" or "help me." Caregivers grasp baby's needs immediately rather than learn through trial and error. Dr. Joseph Garcia has designed the system so it's not necessary to learn an entire new language, although it also provides a terrific start in American Sign Language for a hearing-impaired child. A fascinating introduction delves into the development of language in children and uses informative line drawings to demonstrate over 150 hand signs for all kinds of actions and nouns. The accompanying video provides practical tips for getting started, some insight into the hows and whys of this method from Dr. Burton White (director of the Center for Parent Education), and inspiring sights of young babies signing effectively with their caregivers. The laminated quick-reference guide lists some of the most common words in any parent's day: cookie, no, and up are but a few. Garcia's clear, concise methods make learning a breeze, and caregivers gain outstanding new abilities to give the best possible care for the babies entrusted to them. --Jill Lightner
Customer Reviews:
Easy to understand / user-friendly.......2007-10-11
This set has many forms of materials included - the quick-view card helpful for babysitters and grandparents, the DVD to fully explain the theory behind sign-language as well as properly demonstrate the motions of sign-language, and a book which covers many of the same points on theory of sign-language as the DVD. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and after only 1 showing we both picked up many signs to be able to use with our little one.
Signing with babies works.......2007-09-10
We bought Garcia's DVD for our grandson at about 4 months of age. Signs helped him express his needs and even feelings with a minimum of fussing. He is now almost 3 and very verbal & advanced. It may be that he's just a great kid, but we believe signing with babies really works.
Signing is cool -- don't need the video though.......2007-07-08
I like the sign language. It was pretty great when our 9 month old told me he wanted milk the first time! I don't think you need the video though. You can just start repeating certain signs on your own. Just repeat them a lot and be consistent.
The problem we had is that we couldn't get our daycare providers to use the signs. So it seemed like any progress we made got undone by them. He would use the signs with them but they wouldn't recognize it. I can only imagine how that must have been frustrating and confusing for him. So make sure everyone around him is going to use the signs before you start teaching them.
Too much marketing, Not enough vocab........2007-05-26
I started at 7 months, he picked up the first sign at about 10 months, and the rest came around 1 yr. The video/book combination is good because the video shows you the signs and the book is handy for a quick reference.
Drawbacks:
1. I felt like much of the video was still trying to sell me on the idea of doing sign with my baby. It could focus less on marketing and present the information more efficiently.
2. The sign vocabulary is limited to the first stage of sign language learning only. It could be improved by including more vocabulary.
Best Baby Sign Language program.......2007-05-14
I have compared this program with other sign language programs, and it seems to be the best one I have come across so far. At one point, I taught another baby sign language course, whose name I will not mention. The program's signs did not always come close to actual sign language, which I found was offensive to the deaf community. Joseph Garcia's program follows actual signs from ASL, and the program is easy enough to learn if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. I would definitely recommend this baby sign language program for other mothers - the resources are varied - book, DVD, quick reference guide - it's the best out there!!

Customer Reviews:
spanish now! level 1.......2007-10-13
Although I ordered and received the edition my teacher dictated, the book does not contain the CDs that it was supposed to contain. It also seems to have text (dialogue) that is different from the same editions that other students in my class use.
Can't explain the differences.
A solid value, but not without its flaws.......2007-06-22
I bought this book before leaving to spend a year in Latin America. I wanted to hit the ground running with my Spanish, so I did many of the exercises before leaving.
The good: For twenty bucks, you get nearly 500 pages worth of study material. There is a good mix of rules explanations, reading passages, pictures, puzzles, and lots and lots of drills. The latter can get mind numbing but in the end is necessary to absorb the stuff. I found that if you plow the material diligently, and combine this book with a good, cheap spanish learning audio CD (like living language), you can really get a lot for your money. The version (though it was the seventh edition) I bought did not have its own audio CD, so I cannot speak to it.
The negatives: I agree with the poster who called the editing of the book sloppy. There is an irritating lack of attention-to-detail, including typos, sentence drills on phrases, though grammatically correct, would never be said by any real person. Worst of all, some words are introduced in questions before they are ever covered in the material!!! It seems like no one ever gave this book a thorough, cover to cover read for continuity and flow.
Even with all of these negatives, I am happy with the purchase. It really has allowed to me to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. It is a good value purchase, but not without its flaws.
Spanish .......2007-06-11
A great reference-teaching book on how to speak and read Spanish. Very thick, lots of things to read and work through.
Excellent for classroom or self study........2007-05-08
This is one of the books that we use with our students. It is simple and uncluttered, and provides ample opportunity for homework or self-study.
Definitely Recommend.......2007-04-04
I really took my time before ordering this book, and now I am glad that I did. This book is by far the best in this category.

great word book.......2007-09-12
I loved this book as a kid because of all the detail on every page. A kid could spend so much time looking at all the words/objects on the page and then imagining what the people are doing.
I loved it when I was a kid so I wanted to share the fun of this book with a modern day kid.
My 18 mo old's favorite book.......2007-09-06
My son loves this book. He leafs through the pages, studying the pictures, and he loves to point at items and say the name. He loves this book so much that we also purchased Scarry's "Things That Go" which he loves even more!
Other Books.......2007-09-03
A book for kids that are learning to read. It is basically narrated by a bunch of cute fuzzy bears doing a tour of a town and all the common objects and situations that you might encounter in such a setting, enabling words to go with pictures so that children can go through them and learn to identify the objects as an aid to reading. A well done book.
Big book!.......2007-07-24
This is a LARGE book, like 12 x 14 inches. So the pages are pretty big, a little unwieldy for small kids, and mine are 18 and 32 months, they have already torn a couple pages just because it's hard for them to flip the big pages. They loves the Richard Scary animals though and like me to read it to them. It is a busy book, lots to see! Took me about 30 mins to read it to them the first time. Great book - I had this one when I was little, but in smaller binding!
A timeless masterpiece!.......2007-06-02
I am twenty-five years old, and my first copy of this book was very old and tattered when I read it in the early 80s. I still have and treasure it, but I am looking forward to buying a new sturdy copy to give my son (now six months old) before long. This was hands down my favorite picture book as a child, and even now, every time I pick it up, I wind up mesmerized by the pages and studying every single picture before I put it back down. I'm so pleased now that my son is here, so I have an excuse to read it again without looking silly!

Classic NLP resource.......2007-05-12
Great wealth of material on the Meta Model, presented in a well organized format. Unlike so many NLP books that are seminar transcriptions, this book was written and organized and edited.
The Structure of Magic: A Book About Language and ..........2007-01-03
This series is for the serious in depth learner and student of NLP. These are not self help books for the casual reader they are the kind of book most of us read a chapter of and then have to digest, read again, as these are text books..real text books.
That said, if you want to really understand communication then you want to read them, these boys are the big guns. You want to sell more real estate, read Tony Robbins, you want to be a great therapist, start here.
The Structure of Magic.......2006-04-28
A great book for therapists. The origins of the PNL. For those who are not professional therapists could be a little bit too dense.
or How to Get Away With Murder.......2005-01-11
http://www.voxfux.com/features/cia_murder.html
Interesting individual writing this book... accused of murder, cocaine dealing, CIA training... Google 'Richard Bandler criminal past.'
Aside from that, these books are great at teaching mind manipulation - of yourself and others. Proceed.. with caution.
intense skepticism required.......2004-08-31
I took a psych course from Bandler when he was a grad student at CMU in 68. He was quite shallow then believing in overly simplistic models of human behavior. I've read a number of his books and while they promise qite a bit they don't work all that well. Recall the old saying, "seek simplicity and distrust it". Be careful, this is likely to be just another dead end on your road to enlightenment
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic! Not just for reading teachers!.......2007-06-12
This is an important work for any teacher to read. It helps the teacher focus on how he or she can actively shape a student's identity by helping the student to develop a firm concept of self. Detailed questions and examples are given. I found this work very helpful to think about, although I don't intend to teach reading or become a reading coach. The work has helped guide me into thinking about how to turn students into powerful, confident, human beings.
Wonderful! Love it!
Choice Words: How Our Language Affects Children's Learning.......2007-05-13
This book really changed my thinking about how to speak to children to promote the best learning, and what to say. Our words are powerful tools in the 'teacher's took kit' and must be used with care.
An amazing small, yet powerful book........2007-03-08
I couldn't put it down--which is often said of a novel, but maybe not so often about a professional book. I truly read the book for six hours, and only took a few breaks. I started out highlighting what I found provocative, but soon realized that that wasn't enough. I got out my post-its, and began to note bits of wisdom I didn't want to forget. I think I must have added 50 post-its!! It's not that the information is so new, but rather that it is such a reminder and "emphasizer" about how we talk to children, and treat them in our classrooms. I thank Mr. Johnston for his thoughtful approach, and love the organization of the book. I've shared bits and pieces of what I've read with the staff at my school, and plan to continue to do so for the rest of the year. I've ordered two more copies of the book to share with colleagues. Thank you for this inspiring book.
Choice Words/Love & Logic.......2006-08-12
This book aligns somewhat with the Love & Logic philosophy. I enjoyed the introduction as much as the book itself.
Great book.......2006-08-01
This book is a must read for new teachers. It has helped me a lot. It's also a good read for parents. I think that the principles in this book for teachers also relate well to how we speak to our children.
Amazon.com
It's meant for high schoolers, but adults who haven't inhaled chalk dust for years might appreciate it even more. The process of organizing, researching and writing a paper is laid is out in easy-to-understand normal-speak. The chapters on grammar and usage are very user-friendly, and lots of extras (suffixes, parliamentary procedure, periodic table, metric system, the U.S. Constitution, world maps, etc.) make this an extraordinarily popular and useful household item. If you're feeling generous, you might even let the kid take it to school on occasion.

Excellent Resource Book!.......2007-01-04
This book was recommended by a High School English teacher. It is an excellent resource for High School students. I highly recommend it!
For students who already know the rules.......2007-01-04
I bought this book for my younger daughters, and did not find it to be very helpful. The information is very condensed. You would need to know the rules or basic guidelines already to be able to use this. It definitely is not for beginners.
very usefull!!!.......2006-07-05
it's very helpful while writing a report, convincing letter, or any formal document.....
Book Description
For kindergartners and first graders who need extra work on their early literacy skills, this proven plan for teaching phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence is a teacher's best friend. Expert researchers created this developmentally sequenced, 11-week program in order to give students repeated opportunities to practice and enhance their beginning reading and spelling abilities. Each of the 44, 15 to 20 minute lessons features a "say-it-and-move-it" activity, a letter name and sound instruction exercise, and phonological awareness practice.
Perfect for small groups or individual instruction, this program is easy for teachers to use and understand because detailed scripted instructions and reproducible materials - such as picture cards, letter cards, and games - are provided. And teachers have the flexibility to shorten or extend the amount of time it takes for a student to complete the program. With this all-in-one resource, educators will have everything they need to get their students off to a great start in reading.

Perfect condition.......2007-06-11
The book cam quickly in the mail and was exactly as described. Thank you!
Great organized program.......2007-05-19
I am impressed by the organization of this phonological awareness program. I have just started using it with Kindergarten children who need more help developing PA. They love the game-like, quick exercises and are learning the difference between a sound and a letter name. I use a dolphin puppet for Fix-it which the children look forward to seeing every time we meet.
Crack the Code.......2006-03-12
Road to the Code is just loaded with information and ideas for use in the classroom. Begins at the beginning with phonological awareness activities and prodeeds forward. Great source for instruction and differentiation. Super !!!
Road to the Code.......2006-03-01
I think this is a great program for teaching phonemic awareness. It has almost everything that you need. I would recommend it to anyone working with young children or those with special needs that are struggling with reading readiness.
outstanding.......2006-02-28
Rode to the Code gave me a great program on how to help my struggling students with phonemic awareness. Over time, these students began to understand the big picture of what reading is all about. We are matching letters and sounds and recognizing rhyming words and rhyming word parts. Thank you Rode to the Code!

The book missing the content.......2005-09-02
The pages of the content are ripped off. The pen writtings are all over the book. It is in a such bad shape that sometimes it is hard to make out the words. I have received the book in awful condition, even for the used book.
Good book, but with errors and no apparent support........2001-11-15
I'm a college ESL instructor, and am a bit frustrated. This book has some good exercises, and is very good, but it DOES have errors, and no web site or phone number is given for support. In these Internet-intensive days, a support web site should be a given! I've got to correct students' homework now, seeing if they found the 8 grammatical errors in the given paragraph; I can only find 7! I wish there were someone to contact.
The best book I've ever read..........2000-04-15
This book let you catch the most important thing easily. What's more, you would be suprised at it's detail which makes you understand the tricky things... Whenever you are stuck, it will give best help.

Book Description
The role of language as a bridge between learning disability and psychiatric disorder is the unifying theme of this wide-ranging book. The editors of this text give particular emphasis to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and autistic disorder. Contributors seek explanations for the dual incidence of psychiatric and language disorder by considering research in developmental, cognitive and biological fields, and speculate on the contribution of new imaging modalities. Essays cover topical issues such as syndrome definition in dyslexia, acquired memory disorder in childhood, and biology-behavior correspondence, as well as a range of treatment options. Enlivened with case vignettes, and offering insights into the range of current thinking on language and behavior, this will prove to be a rich resource.
