Suzanne Somers may forever be ingrained in American minds as the ditzy blond from Three's Company, but her five past bestselling diet books prove that her fit figure is admired by millions. Now in her 50s, Somers has endured what she calls the "Seven Dwarves" of menopauseItchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful, and All Dried Up. She claims that until one tames the hormonal roller-coaster of menopause, there's little hope of losing weight: "If your hormones are out of balance, no weight-loss program will work for you." She recommends supplementation with "natural, bioidentical hormones" available from a compounding pharmacist, or an endocrinologist specializing in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). The synthetic hormones so widely prescribed, she says, cause the body to "mimic pregnancy," and result in a "high-insulin state," both of which lead to weight gain and bloating.

Read our interview
with Suzanne Somers |
While finding these natural hormonal supplements may be difficult for some readers, as the majority of BHRT-prescribing endocrinologists practice in the Los Angeles area, Somers stresses it's worth making the trip for a BHRT appointment. Moreover, readers may balk at a major side effect of taking bioidentical hormones: the return of one's menstrual period. "To me, having a period is a small price to pay for great health, increased vitality, and a slim figure," she says. Somers adds to her hormonal advice a detailed menu plan, which includes limited amounts of whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. She also recommends a few "high-glycemic" foods to avoid at all costs. The recipes are mostly drool-worthy, with dishes including Chicken Parmigiana and Warm Chocolate Soufflé Cakes, with the less labor-intensive dishes requiring some of her packaged Somersize-brand sauces, spices, and sweeteners. While the hormone supplementation in her plan may be hard to come by, her dietary advice is much more sensible than what you'll find in the majority of weight-loss books these days.--Erica Jorgensen

From Suzanne's personal recipe collection |
| Suzanne Somers lifts the veil on her upcoming books, Somersize Appetizers and Somersize Cocktails, revealing two mouthwatering recipes that will get your party started, the Somersize way.
Chili Braised Pork with Pocatello Salsa in Butter Lettuce Cups
From Somersize Appetizers - PRO/FATS & VEGGIES - LEVEL ONE
Serves 8
This spicy and delicious appetizer is perfect alongside a cool and refreshing mojito. For Level Two serve on crispy-fried whole-wheat tortilla triangles.
| CHILI BRAISED PORK:
1 3-pound pork butt, cut into small chunks
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
I red bell pepper, seeded and medium dice
1 red onion, medium diced
3-4 jalapeno chilies, sliced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup chopped tomatoes
2 cups chicken broth
16 small butter lettuce leaves (to use for cups) |
JICAMA GARNISH:
½ jicama, julienned finely
½ red onion, sliced thinly
2 teaspoons olive oil
Juice of ½ lime
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper
TOMATILLO SALSA:
6 tomatillos, cut in half
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper | For Pork:
Season pork liberally with salt and pepper. In a braising pan (or stock pot) over medium high, add olive oil and pork. Sear on both sides. Add peppers, onions, chilies and sauté for about 10 minutes, until golden and caramelized. Add tomato paste, tomatoes and chicken stock. Bring to a boil and cover. Reduce heat to low. Cook until pork falls apart, about an hour. Remove from heat. Remove pork, reserving the liquid and allow pork to cool. Pull pork into small pieces. Place pulled pork into a bowl and add 4-6 ounces of the liquid. Set aside.
For Jicama Garnish:
Toss all ingredients into a nonmetallic bowl until well combined. Allow flavors to combine for at least 30 minutes.
For Tomatillo Salsa:
Preheat oven to 400. Place tomatillos onto a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast in oven until caramelized and soft, about 35-45 minutes. Remove from oven and while still warm, chop until they become the texture of chunky salsa.
To assemble:
Place a spoonful of pulled pork into each butter lettuce leaf. Top with jicama garnish and a dollop of salsa. Serve immediately.
Somersize Mojito
From Somersize Cocktails - ALMOST LEVEL ONE
This Cuban drink is light and refreshing with a burst of fresh mint and lime. Normally it's sweetened with sugar, but I use SomerSweet instead. I have to say, I actually like the taste of SomerSweet better! Sugar can leave a bubbly film in your mouth but SomerSweet is so clean and fresh tasting. Traditionally this drink is made with rum, but I much prefer the taste of vodka. Make it either way you like. This is the perfect summer drink and if I had to pick only one cocktail in the entire book, this would be it. There are many different preferences when it comes to this drink. I tend to like mine with strong lime and mint flavor. Some like it less intense with more club soda. Adjust to your liking.
1 1/2 oz light rum
4-6 fresh mint leaves
1 ½ Key lime (preferred) or 1 regular (Persian) lime
¾ teaspoon SomerSweet (or 1 tablespoon sugar)
2-4 oz soda water
Add mint leaves, lime juice, pressed limes, and SomerSweet into a highball glass. "Muddle" ingredients with a wooden stick or handle to release mint flavor. Add ice, rum, and soda water. Serve with limes and leaves in drink.

Book Description
Who says you can’t sizzle in the second half of life?
At last, a solution! In Slim and Sexy Forever, Suzanne Somers outlines a program speci?cally designed to address the needs of women and men who want to lose weight and replace the lust for life that naturally wanes with age. In this “baby boomer’s recipe for the fountain of youth,” Suzanne shows you how to:
• melt away the unwanted pounds
• reinvigorate your sex drive
• capture youthful vitality
• develop a more positive outlook on life
• sharpen memory
• eliminate hot flashes
• achieve optimum health from the inside out
In her runaway New York Times bestseller The Sexy Years, Suzanne changed the way we look at our health and hormones, showing how replacing hormones lost in the aging process with natural bioidentical hormones can eliminate symptoms associated with aging.
Now, in Slim and Sexy Forever, Suzanne combines her cutting-edge information on natural hormone replacement with her successful weight loss program, Somersize, for a one-two punch that is the only proven solution to the problems associated with aging. Working with innovative doctors, Suzanne has created a program that alleviates symptoms such as mood swings, sleepless nights, hot flashes, and diminished sex drive that are so common as we get older. Simultaneously, her phenomenally successful Somersize program shows you how to beat a stalling metabolism and stay lean and trim while eating remarkably delicious food. With millions of people losing weight on the program, it is a proven formula for success.
Suzanne makes clear in this fascinating new book that if your hormones are out of balance, you will not be able to lose weight. Weight loss must be approached with a twofold strategy as you get older: balance your hormones the bioidentical way and eat correctly. One doesn’t work without the other.
In Slim and Sexy Forever you’ll also learn:
• The truth about carbs: Depriving yourself of too many carbs will lead to hormonal imbalance and weight gain. Eat the right carbs to lose weight!
• Plateau-busting tips: Suzanne explains why you hit plateaus and exactly how to push past them to achieve your goal weight.
• The connection between adrenals and weight gain: If you blow out your adrenals trying to be Superwoman, you are going to gain weight and feel fatigued. Find out how to prevent that from happening.
And, as always, Suzanne makes losing weight easy with more than 100 delicious new recipes, including Crab Bisque with Sweet Corn and Crab Relish, Somersize Tex-Mex Chicken Drumettes and Meatballs, Peppered Pork Chops with Fried Sage Leaves, Warm Chocolate Soufflé Cakes, and Wild Berry Crostada. These are Suzanne’s best recipes yet!

Putting Forth the Effort to Change My Life.......2007-02-13
As a follower of the Sommersize lifestyle for several months now, I have reaped the rewards of smaller clothing sizes, a better night's sleep, more energy, and confidence in the kitchen. The health benefits of this program have allowed me to free myself of the long lines at the drug store. The recipies alone are worth the purchase of the book even if you are not following the program.

Hormones. Weight gain. Women's fat-storing bodies vs. men's fat-burning metabolism. What's the difference? Why do women struggle with weight issues so much? This book is a well-researched look at the issues.
Customer Reviews:
Women, Weight and Hormones.......2007-07-28
Excellent and thorough book about the many, many hormonal and endocrine issues that affect women--especially after menopause. It's not only helpful in addressing nutrition and hormones, but also in explaining the supplemental needs of post-menopausal women. My nutrition changes, hormone replacement and supplements have made a huge difference for me. I lost the needed weight, and also feel much more like my old self. Changes were needed in all areas. Doctors typically don't address supplements--as Elizabeth Vliet says. I am so grateful for the author's emphasis on addressing glucose intolerance--I think it has already helped me to prevent diabetes. As the author stresses, it's too late by the time it's diagnosed by the doctor.

(...)She talks about how modern medicine doesn't treat women properly, then she dispenses a variety of synthetic hormones instead of using natural preparations that are compounded for the individual. The side affect of those synthetic hormones is...you guessed it... weight gain. I'm actually up 5 pounds thanks to the 5 different birth control pills she placed me on. (...)
I Have to Disagree with New York on this one.......2004-03-04
I went back & read The Menopause Diet and found nothing at all similar about Dr. Vliet's recommendations in Women, Weight & Hormones. In fact, many of the things the Menopause Diet recommends (Soy, over-the-counter progesterone cremes, etc.) are advised against by Dr. Vliet in Women, Weight & Hormones as many of these over-the-counter fad remedies actually become quite dangerous when combined with a hormonal imbalance. Perhaps one could make a mistake by skimming both books, but if you actually read them both, they are very different concepts in female healthcare.
THIS BOOK IS OUTSTANDING!.......2003-12-02
I have battled a hormone imbalance for over 20 years. This imbalance does not show up on routine hormone tests - mainly due to the way modern medicine views and tests female hormones. I read this book and was shocked to discover why most of the over-the-counter self remedies (soy, T3, natural progesterone creams, DHEA, etc.) I tried actually made my imbalance WORSE -- some of those treatments could have caused lethal effects when combined with my particular imbalance. This author raises NUMEROUS common sense paradigm shifts in medical thinking regarding diagnosis and treatment options which affect weight and hormones. This one book explained everything I've ever read about hormones and weight in a way that was applicable and useful - not slanted towards the purchase of a product. Basic knowledge vital for female health.

First the bad news. In the decades leading up to menopause, the average woman can expect to gain 29 pounds. The better news is found on the pages of Fit Not Fat at Forty Plus, an outstanding diet and fitness guide from the editors of Prevention magazine. Grounded in the latest research and packed with practical suggestions, the book recognizes the unique gravity-defying needs of women over 40. Early chapters offer a crash course on the "midlife fitness crisis" of lowered estrogen and sluggish metabolism. "To win the metabolic war, you must change the way you eat and exercise," warn the authors. Other chapters offer hope and help for women with suddenly flabby arms, tight jeans, afternoon fatigue, and a bathroom scale that won't budge. The key is developing a personal diet and fitness strategy to boast metabolic rate and counter hormonal shifts. One standout section explains why stress feeds fat cells and how to define whether you are feeling hungry or stressed. Readers who follow these metabolism-boosting workouts and sample eating plans can lose the over-the-hill birthday cards. --Barbara Mackoff

Fit Not Fat at 40-Plus.......2007-07-05
I liked the uncomplicated language and writing style that gave practical steps to improve right away. It provided advice, tips, and other information helpful to understanding changes that occur after 40. I also contained explainations of how my body works. I did not feel like I had to have a lot of background knowledge to start improving.
10 down and 7 to go!.......2007-07-04
I can highly recommend this book to any woman who wants to shed a few pounds gained along the way (over 40 or not)! It's not that there is anything revolutionary about it, it just reminds you in a positive way about everything you ever learned about healthy eating and exercise...plus a few extra gems that you didn't know about. Which is not to give it justice. I love how the book is very practical and helps you make your own plan that you can live with. I use the weekly planning sheets and daily tracking sheets religiously. My husband has laughed at my ridiculous calorie-counting, but, you know, it works and so I'm sticking with it!! 10 pounds down, 7 to go!
The book is very well thought-out and offers something for everybody. It's just what I was looking for.
Fit Not Fat at Forty Plus.......2007-06-27
I loved this book and most importantly imlemented what I learned in the book and am thrilled with the results. I am eating more often and seldom feel humgry and my weight is coming down steadily. I have gone from 133lbs to 122lbs and holding steady.
Fit or Fat.......2007-01-16
There was nothing earth shattering in this book. It is all the same old common sense. Maybe it will motivate you.
Easy to Understand.......2005-10-10
I have enjoyed reading the information in this book. The insight on GI eating, importance of exercise, value of supplements is amazing. I have changed my diet choices to lower GI and you would not believe how long I am able to go in between meals. Why? because I'm not harassed by bouts of hypoglycemia. It's great. I haven't lost any weight as of yet but I imagine that's inevitable!

Book Description
According to Geoffrey Redmond, M.D., a majority of the 42 million American women between the ages of thirty-five and fifty-five suffer from vulnerability to their own hormones. Appearance, emotions -- and even sex drive -- may be affected. Symptoms include thinning hair, persistent acne, mood swings, low energy, loss of pleasure in sex, weight gain, irregular periods, and pain. While the media has emphasized the problems of menopause, Dr. Redmond explains that all too many women experience hormonal miseries even in their thirties. Lab tests are often normal because the problem is not the hormones themselves but how a woman's body reacts to them. Healthy, active women suddenly find that once quiescent hormones have taken over control of their lives. Because their problems are often dismissed as trivial, women who are hormonally vulnerable are frequently thwarted in their quest for help. Too often they are brushed off with remarks such as, "Your tests are normal; there's nothing wrong with you." This is tragic because, as Dr. Redmond demonstrates, hormonal balance can nearly always be restored with the treatments he details, which include individualized use of prescription medications, herbal supplements, lifestyle changes, and even spiritual practices. Many women have heard that testosterone can help sex drive, but most have not been warned about the damage that careless testosterone therapy can cause on skin and hair.
In this book, Dr. Redmond, an internationally recognized authority on testosterone in women, explains the only safe ways to use testosterone. With informative sidebars, quizzes, and personal stories of women who have overcome hormone vulnerability, this helpful book will empower you to find treatments for your hormone problems that are tailored to fit your own body, biochemistry, symptoms, and lifestyle.

I am 37 and am loosing my hair, The information in this book has made me aware of all the reasons women can loose their hair. Many of the reason have the same symptoms. Which at first is frustrating until you realize more reasons means more possibilities to get it back even if only part of the hair. If you are considering hair transplants read this first, please.
I read other parts of the book that would be relevant to some friends this book is a great one, I have 3 more books about hair loss one is pretty good but abit out dated, the other is OK , and the other I will use to start a fire.
a must-have .......2007-05-18
This book is a must-have for every woman and teenage girl. Provides a wealth of info about female hormones & physiology in an easy-to-read format. Dr. Redmond is a leader in his field, and his depth of knowledge and compassion emerge effortlessly from the text.

I feel like myself again and that is a miracle.
Dr Redmond changed my life!.......2007-01-22
I went to Dr. Redmond over three years ago with a whole host of female problems that were preventing me from feeling good and enjoying my life. If you often feel that something is just "not right" with your health...then you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Book Description
First published in 2002 and now updated and expanded, this guide pioneered the idea that hormones play a key role in weight loss and weight control. Writing in clear, simple terms, Dr. Isaacs profiles each hormone system, discussing what can go wrong and how imbalances can affect weight and even perpetuate obesity. The book explains how to reverse symptoms of hormonal imbalance through diet changes and other remedies, and then expands the discussion, teaching readers how to deal with everything from menstrual cycles to diabetes by recognizing and remedying hormonal problems.
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-01-11
Very informative. Good technical information in easy to understand terms. Appears to be very thorough. However, his dietary recommendations are lacking. Good, healthy nutrition does not include such things like processed foods and artificial sweeteners. There is so much good nutritional information available that never made it into this book.
Disappointing.......2006-01-21
There's some medical information which you could find on the internet but it is disconnected by any theme. Also, the author claims that it is proved that high carbohydrate diets cause insulin resistance and diabetes.(pg76) He obviously hasn't read "The China Study" by T.C. Campbell. Nor has he read "Mastering Leptin" by B. Richards, otherwise he would not recommend snacking as a way to lose weight. There is a lot of information about drugs and supplements for serious illnesses which may not be useful to the reader looking for the hormonal connection to weight issues. For that read "Mastering Leptin" and "The China study".
One of the Better Books on the Subject.......2005-10-28
"Hormonal Balance" details the functions of the thyroid, pituitary gland, adrenals, kidneys, the brain, androgen, estrogen, cortisol and stress hormones and how they all play a part in ensuring that the host person can enjoy the best quality of life. If that delicate balance is disrupted, due to excessive alcohol or caffeine, for example, or eating too much of the wrong kinds of foods, etc., then the effects should be obvious: irritability, nervousness, moodiness, depression and anxiety, and other conditions. Women should find this book especially useful, since it candidly discusses the causes, effects and corrections of PMS and menopause. This book is just as much for men, too. Mr. Isaac is convinced that obesity is the cause as well as the result of a poor, deficient dietary and exercise regimen. Reduction or elimination of lipids (fats), decreased sugar, counting calories sensibly, monitoring weight and maintaining exercise are all detailed in a way not found in other books. The eleven chapters perfectly over the 397 pages is one of the best literary, medical and wellbeing investments that can be readily purchased today.
Hormonal Balance: Understanding Hormones, Weight, and Your Metabolism.......2005-10-26
A wonderful book that I will always keep. This is not just information that you have heard from other books, but up to date information on your hormones and metabolism. If you are having problems with weight gain and hormones then you won't waste your money on this one!
I LOVE IT!.......2005-08-27
At first I thought that this book was useful.. It turned out to be a MUST-HAVE for everyone! A great resource and instructional book for almost every aspect of a human being's health! Although people always tend to comfort themselves that nothing's wrong with their health, sometime they suddenly find out that they have been having a hidden, serious problem that they should consume not less than a billion medicines to cure.
This books helped me spot the reasons why I had several but minor problems which my mother always tried to convince me to believe that I'm a perfectly healthy person. Now, and with the help of Hormonal Balance, I discovered and was able to reach the specific health problems I've been having for the last 15 years and how will I be able to overcome them.
Highly recommended!
Special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Scott Isaacs who seems to have put a lot of effort in bringing up such a perfect solution book!

Book Description
Harriette Mogul explains that this unfortunate weight gain, which impacts millions of women, does not have to be a permanent condition. With clear and understanding language, she illustrates that the added pounds are actually a symptom of insulin resistance. With a low dose of medication and a modified low-carb diet, it can be treated.

Too much.......2007-07-26
I was instructed to read this by a medical professional. I read it got a few things out of it but there is some medication that you are to take along with the diet and I do not feel that I should have to dole out more money for "stuff".
Caution about metformin recommended in book.......2006-07-27
Before anyone buys this book, he or she should look up metformin on the web, follow some links, and find out about this product, which Hariette Mogul uses with her Syndrome W patients. One site, for example, says that a tiny percentage of women develope lactic acidosis using this product, and 50% of those cases are fatal! Many people ought not to even try it. // Beyond that, the recipes are healthy and her dieting concepts unique and probably very helpful for those who can safely eat up to 12 ounces meat/fish protein a day or substitute sources. Her recommendations of 4 or more vegetables, 3 fruits, 3 starches, some fat, etc. are in line with currently respected healthy diet guidelines for women. The admonition to not eat cereal in the morning, even whole grain, might be worth trying. Some books by MD's state compulsive overeaters should have oatmeal in the morning and that women digest starch more slowly than other foods, so it should be eaten by noon. However, it's also the case that protein in the morning makes many people feel more alert; and after eating eggs, people eat less for lunch. Also, those who overeat at night may find an evening cup of oatmeal, or bowl, staves off evening snacking. // The concise suggestions for each meal, laid out in an orderly fashion on a few pages, are helpful. I recommend this book for reading and thinking about.
Solid medical info and great chefs' recipes!.......2005-10-03
Harriette Mogul's SYNDROME W is groundbreaking, highly informative - and also fun. Her gourmet recipes make your mouth water, motivating you to start cooking her carb-modified meals right away. SYNDROME W is an absolutely unique mix of solid medical information, gourmet chefs' healthy recipes, and your loving aunt's gentle understanding of your resistance to exercise as she helps reorganize your kitchen for your new way of cooking and eating!
Mogul is an endocrinologist who, in her own research, has discovered that many women who gain a substantial weight in their middle years are suffering from a medical condition that is virtually never tested for. Such women cannot lose weight even with dedicated diet and exercise - until a medication called metformin is added to their regime. With metformin and proper eating habits, Mogul's patients are finally able to lose excess poundage. Because the proper medical tests are not widely done, Mogul lists precise instructions on two pages so the reader can easily photocopy them for her doctor, along with citations to the scientific literature supporting the efficacy of metformin. While the medical information derives from Mogul's academic work, her writing in this book is light, concise, and perfectly clear.
Mogul gives all kinds of unique practical information about how to reorganize your eating habits - e. g., travel and restaurant tips, and which ready-prepared low-carb products in your grocery store are truly tasty and effective (and her grande skim-milk latte tip, along with the scientific explanation of its effectiveness!). The last 100 pages of SYNDROME W are actually a gourmet cookbook full of "Delicious Recipes from Great Chefs." (Typical of Mogul's generous manner, she even includes a bio of each of her chefs.)
