Revolutionary.......2006-12-19
I used to hate lap swimming but now I love it, and it's because of this book. Laughlin has reinvented swim instruction. He's made it fun. He's made it easy. And the resulting stroke is heaven.
The exercises do take some effort and dilligence to master. But if you go slow don't move on until you have mastered each exercise, as instructed, you'll open up a whole new world of swimming enjoyment. I often feel like I'm flying in the water. This former water buffalo now swims like a fish.
Note: there's a brand new Total Immersion book being touted on the TI website, which I haven't read. You may want to look into that, instead. Also, some reviews and TI suggest the DVD as the best method, but that wasn't the case for me. In my case, it was the clear, detailed instructions in the book that made it happen.
Good book, but there is a better........2006-11-26
This is a good book for the beginning swimmer, but I would recommend "Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier" over this book. It is by the same author, Terry Laughlin.
DVD is better.......2006-10-25
This has probably been said earlier but instead of purchasing the book, try out the DVD. Words and static pictures go only so far. I found it hard to visualize what you were supposed to do until I saw the DVD.
Good resource.......2006-07-27
If I had a partner or a teacher and enough time, I think I could get swimming down much better. I am trying to learn too fast and cannot get the breathing down for the freestyle; going from novice swimmer to doing a 400 meter pool swim in four weeks wasn't enough time for me. The book is great, and I also bought the DVDs, which I found helpful. This is something I have learned that I can't cram, but given enough time I think the book could give me what I need to swim well.
The anatomy of a 2 second manuever...........2006-07-27
Common sense stuff really. Break down a 2 second golf swing and see if you can make it better: although it may make perfect sense, translating the logic into a 2-second manuever probably takes years to make it effortless....

Book Description
The idea of participating in a triathlon may sound out of the realm of possibility for those without a typical jock-athlete’s honed build, intense focus, and competitive mindset. But now Slow Fat Triathlete opens the door to those who may not come quite so equipped. After years of obesity, poor health, and self-doubt, Jayne Williams took part in her first triathlon in 2002 to prove something to herself and became hooked on the rush of the race. Today she is a self-proclaimed “slow fat triathlete,” unafraid to overcome humiliation, laugh at her foibles, have fun, and accomplish impressive goals. Slow Fat Triathlete is a book for those who may be overweight, out of shape, undisciplined, or otherwise unprepared to enter a triathlon but are curious to try. Through personal stories, practical ideas and suggestions, and uproarious anecdotes, this book inspires, encourages, and proves that with a little training, almost everybody can have a great time and reap huge rewards from pursuing their tri dreams—and that everyone can become a participant and an athlete.
Customer Reviews:
Great, great, great first read for beginner tri-athlete .......2007-10-06
Great, great, great first read for beginner tri-athletes of all ages, shapes and sizes. I've already recommended this book to several of my friends. Jayne Williams is hilarious. She gives practical advice, but keeps you laughing from beginning to end. I plan to do my first triathlon in the Spring of '08, after reading this book, I now believe I can do it!
motivating and fun read!.......2007-07-06
I'm not quite new to the athletic world... still, I found Slow Fat Triathlete impossible to put down. In a very unusual twist for books like these, it is wildly entertaining with its conversational style and humorous slant.
When you finish this, you'll feel like you can take on the world-- and certainly, the triathlon.
Informative an a HOOT.......2007-06-01
This book is not for the seasoned trialthlete but offers an honest insight to those of us who love to compete but may never actually be competitive. A solid, honest beginning for someone looking to "Try a Tri".
Great Great Great.......2007-05-27
This book is amazing! Very motivating, helpful advice, let's you know that triathletes are not perfect Greek Gods. I love all of her little anicdotes and race day diaries. I have never felt so capable of accomplishing something in my life. This book is real and down to earth. Lots of help about finding equipment that will suit you. I have always been a nervous cyclist. I am scared to death of those skinny-tired death traps they call road bikes. This book let me know that bikes of all sorts are welcome in triathlons, especially if you're in it to finish, not just in it to win it. Maybe one day I will get over my fear of road bikes, until then Mountain-bike hybrid it is.
Buy this Book!! It rocks. Especially for normal everyday women.

Book Description
Based entirely on research from peer-reviewed journals and randomized controlled trials,
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is a complete program to prevent and rehabilitate rotator cuff injuries for athletes and non-athletes alike. In less than 100 pages, readers will learn precisely how the rotator cuff works, what can go wrong with it, and then are guided step-by-step through an evidence-based program that takes just minutes a week to complete. Drawing from the latest rotator cuff research,
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is especially useful for those who have been diagnosed with either a partial or full-thickness rotator cuff tear, experience shoulder pain, do upper body weight lifting, play a sport or have a job that involves repeated arm motions above shoulder level, have been diagnosed with "impingement syndrome," or for anyone simply wanting a healthy and properly functioning rotator cuff.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource on treating and preventing injuries..........2007-09-06
This is a great book that concisely explains the anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff including the bones, muscles, biomechanics, etc. in just enough detail for the average person to understand. It also describes how to distinguish between different types of injuries, how to approach rehabilitating them and collects a lot of rotator cuff injuries in one small volume. While the book is rather expensive for its size, it packs a lot of well-explained information into a small space.
I'm an ex-physiology teaching fellow and scientist. I thought this book was great and turned something that is often difficult to explain into something anyone who can read can understand. The diagrams are good and the book contains no unnecessary detail.
I also agree with other reviewers that while Jim Johnson isn't an expert on rotator cuffs, his book is thoroughly researched and he does have a PT credential and has undoubtedly had 15 years of clinical experience in a teaching hospital environment. This suggests he has a very good nuts and bolts understanding and hands-on experience.
Johnson is "magic"!.......2007-07-09
This is the second book of Jim Johnson's that I have bought. The first one fixed my back pains with a simple exercise to strengthen the Multifidus muscles.
The exercises in this book has significantly reduced pain and increased mobility in my left shoulder, allowing me to sleep through the night and lift my arm over my shoulder.
Review of, "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff".......2007-06-13
I ordered this book for my brother-in-law who has experienced shoulder pain and not being able to lift his arm higher than shoulder level due to a rotator cuff injury he received in the past. I recommended it to him because of the wonderful results I got using the information in this book to treat my own right shoulder pain.
Having previously read, Jim Johnson's, The Sixty-Second Motivator, and finding it very helpful, I can tell you that I certainly had the motivation to try and stick with an exercise that would relieve my painful and restricting condition. And it sounded to me like my brother-in-law was in the same boat.
I used the Sidelying External Rotation exercise on page 55 of the rotator cuff book and got great results. The first time I tried it I could only manage to raise a 20 ounce can of pineapple about half way up less than ten times. I found the detailed instruction, precautions and notes particularly helpful and feel that carefully following them was why I experienced the gradual recovery. My wife sat beside me making sure I did the exercise slowly and exactly as the book states. After about four weeks I actually worked up to fully raising the can of pineapple 20 times. Later on I increased the weight little by little and began to feel good enough to resume some of the more physically demanding activities on our small farm.
Last week I was actually able to assist with harvesting our hay and didn't suffer during or afterward from any of the shoulder pain or stiffness that I had previously experienced many times. Yes, I was careful about what I did and how I worked, but for me to even attempt to try stacking a 60 pound bale of hay was completely out of the question a few months ago. I went from shoulder pain that caused me sleepless nites and not being able to lift my right arm any higher than shoulder level, to what I consider a darned good day's work.
This book is a real bargain and indeed I consider it invaluable when I think about how it helped me. And as you can see, I heartily recommend it.
So far, so good.......2007-05-11
Just as the book promised, I had a eureka! moment the other day. I bought this book because I have been having unidentified rotator cuff problems for years (I was a baseball and now am an avid softball player). Because everyone talks about rotator cuff tears, I assumed that's what my problem was. After reading Johnson's book, I was surprised and pleased to discover that my problem was most likely simply an impingement, and that no matter what your unspecified problem it is, it is likely to improve from his exercises (he cites the studies that prove this claim). Prior to starting his exercises, it was painful to soap up in the shower, sleep or do anything where I had to reach my back. Now, after just a month of the stretches and strengthening exercises I realized all of a sudden the other day (eureka!) that I have no pain in my shoulders! My range of motion is not where it should be yet in one shoulder, but it's improving. I still have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by my progress so far.
Johnson's book is written to help people with all severity of rotator cuff problems. Anywhere from being unable to lift an arm overhead to near full utility of the joint. He also gives you measurements by which you can judge your flexibility, which is also nice to help you figure out what "normal" is.
I suppose the question still remains: why don't you just go to a doctor, idiot? I suppose the real answer is the inconvenience of going, the cost, and primarily, just that I'm a DIYer type my nature, and like to fix things on my own when I can.
The only reason I didn't go to 5 stars was because I got the impression from the book that Johnson is really just a guy (in the field) who reviewed some studies and came up with a program. Now, that's a great way to go about things, but I would not call him an *expert* on rotator cuffs. On the plus side, that does make him very easy to understand, as opposed to some of the surgeons out there who have written on the subject.

Simply Great!.......2007-08-28
This book is just about everything you will need if you are looking for swimming workouts. It takes you right from the very basics to advanced workouts. It also helps you correct swimming positions. I've already decreased my free style lap time just by making little adjustments. Simply Great!
The Fit Swimmer: 120 workouts and Training Tips.......2006-03-20
This book has really helped me improve and vary my workouts and make the masters swim class I teach more interesting.
A great training guide for anyone.......2002-11-25
Like many triathletes I had a bit of swimming in my background when I started racing, but certainly not enough to be competitive. I occasionally swam with organized groups but my consultant travel schedule made sure that was infrequent. I got a copy of The Fit Swimmer, read it cover to cover and made up about a dozen workouts from the suggested routines. The section on open water racing was particularly valuable. While training diligence was definitely part of it, this book was the #1 resource for me in competitively placing in events ranging from local races to National and Ironman distances. Ms. Brems meets 2 imperatives: she explains things simply and she gives you the tools you need to progress from a relative novice to a competitive swimmer. Like a craftsman and apprentice, she leaves it up to the reader to figure out how to best use the extensive toolset in the book. I found that creating about a dozen workouts on 3x5 cards from her suggested routines and rotating them did the trick (store them in a ziploc bag for use poolside). You can experiment with different routines to test how your body responds. I now coach people on an occasional basis, and strongly encourage each of them to read the book before we start.
Indispensable for first (and beyond) year swim coaches.......2002-01-05
Swimming is one of those curious beasts of the American athetic sports scene: vast multitudes participate (recreational, summer, competitive, etc.), but very few really know how to improve. As in other sports, many parents wind up coaching as their children get involved in swimming as there are too few coaches available. There is much to learn! Stroke technique, using the clock, training the aerobic and non-aerobic energy systems, how to author and conduct a productive and interesting workout, etc.
To those who might feel intimidated by all this, this book brings help in the form of workout structure. The workouts range from basic beginner to advanced workouts for accomplished swimmers. I have used Marianne's book to keep my workouts (as an age-group coach and Master's swimmer) interesting and my swimmers are always eager to swim.
I highly recommend this book for coaches and swimmers who are self-coached.
Not for beginners.......2001-06-15
A good book for intermediate swimmers but offers little technique or help for people just starting out in the sport.

This is a unique series of exercises developed over many years to enhance enjoyment in the water, aimed at both mother, father and child.

Excellent Guide.......2007-09-15
I bought this book as a gift for my sister who is expecting a baby anyday now. I used the older version of this book to teach our nephew how to swim. We started when he was only 4 months old and did the things in the book in addition to a local swimming class focused on water enjoyment. If I could do anything differently I would have started even younger! He loves the water, and sometimes cries when we leave the pool. The book provides a lot of information to assure parents and caregivers that swimming is a safe and natural activity for babies. Not only is the step by step instruction and reassurance easy to follow, the photos cannot be beat! My sister is looking forward to using the book with her new baby, particularly because she knows about the positive experience I had with our nephew. I recommend this book to any parent or caregiver that wants to be actively involved in introducing their child to the water and swimming!
Wonderful book!.......2006-02-20
Don't let the size of this book fool you! I wasn't sure what book to buy to learn about teaching my baby to swim, but I'm so glad I picked this one. The photos are absolutely beautiful and the book is quality enough to place on a coffee table. I was greatly inspired. The exercises are simple and clearly explained. I was able to remember many of them after only skimming it when I took my baby to the pool for the first time - which, thanks to this book, went much better than I expected. My five month old took to the water very well. The author also clearly stated many safety issues to be aware of - for which I was very thankful.
This is a great book. I highly recommend it. ...even if you only buy it for the pictures!
Excellent How-To Book.......2005-08-18
This book is conversational yet concise, and packed with important information for how to safely swim with your baby from newborn into toddlerhood. The many photo illustrations are detailed, clear and beautiful. The author answers important frequently asked questions about water safety and learning to swim. After reading this book and viewing the images, I feel confident taking my 4-month-old into the water for his first swim, and being able to expand his lessons if he likes it.

Provided excellent details.......2007-10-09
I am 41 years old and took my first swim lesson last week. I had a traumatic experience as a child which caused me to get out of the pool and never go back in for lessons - until now. I knew nothing about where to begin learning to swin as an adult. Reading the book and watching the companion video gave me an excellent basis to begin my lessons. The first night I was making it across the pool and had never swam an actual stroke prior to then. I believe this book and video made it possible!
Fabulous!.......2007-10-03
This is a wonderful book that teaches you the most efficient swim stroke possible. I had heard of some of the Total Immersion techniques but this book lays all of them out with step by step drills and techniques. You can teach yourself the techniques easily without the expensive weekend class. The stroke is based on hydrodynamics. A boat's hull speed is determined by the hull length at the water line. The longer the waterline the faster the hull. This technique teaches you to get longer and leaner by stretching one arm out front until the other one comes to replace it. It teaches you to balance on your bouy (chest) which levels your body, brings the hips up and almost eliminates the need to kick. It also teaches you to swim and glide on your side, not flat, so water resistance is minimized. The stroke gets it power from the powerful torso/hip rotation when switching from side to side thus saving your arm and shoulder muscles. This stroke has it all and the very finest swimmers use it. It has opened up a totally new world for me and my swimming. Easier, more efficient, more powerful and more relaxing. You have got to try this out!
Really Good Ideas.......2007-09-27
Book has some great ideas and techniques, but repeats a lot. The DVD ought to come bundled with it as there are too few pictures.
50% self-promotion; 50% an impossibly rigid series of exercises.......2007-09-26
This book offers some good ideas but so much the text is devoted to selling itself (heck, we already bought the book!), and the key sections on the drills are hard to follow and represent a rigid series of exercises that I for one found impossible to follow past an early point. Overall, I wish I had bought a different book to help me improve my swimming technique.
Total Immersion: A new way to swim.......2007-09-10
This is a fun, cleverly written instruction /training manual for the everyday swimmer. I am a competitive masters swimmer and I found many of the drills useful to me as positive reenforcement for the way I train and think. Swimming should be enjoyable as well as invigorating, and swimming the TI way is both. The basis of training the mind so the body works efficiently is not a new concept, but the author brings these basics to a different concept for the aquatic enthusiast, whether novice or traditionally trained. Practice and learn the TI way of swimming and you may never go back to the old traditional ways.
Book Description
The Waterproof Coach is a unique, self-paced workout book for swimmers and triathletes. This book is completely waterproof. Swimmers can take the book pool-side and plan their workout as they swim. Each page of workouts is cut into three segments--the first segment contains a warm up, the second a main set, and the third a cool down. The book can easily be configured into over 6,700 different workouts by combining any warm up with any main set and any cool down. In other words, if the book is used three days a week, it would take over 40 years before the same workout is repeated! The book presents three levels of workouts, from beginner to intermediate. The three segments allow swimmers to mix and match their workouts by combining any of the levels together. Swimmers can vary their routine simply by flipping the segments.
Customer Reviews:
Great swimming workouts.......2007-06-07
This is a wonderful book to help plan your swimming workouts. I used to go to the pool and just start swimming laps... I would end up going all out in the beginning and then I would get too worn out to complete a good workout. With this book, I can flip through and select a warm-up, main set & cool-down. There are beginner, intermediate & advanced levels for each part of the workout. Now I create a total swimming workout based on how I feel and the amount of time I have at the gym. I know what is ahead of me so I pace myself during the warm-up, push myself during the main set & and I always look forward to the cool-down! I also love that this book is waterproof. I bring it to the pool with me & leave it on the edge of the pool... it can get wet and it will not be ruined!
Perfect for Amateur Swimmers.......2007-04-10
This swimming guide is great for the swimmer trying to get back into shape. The pages are printed on waterproof paper so you can take it to the pool with you.
Easy to use and keeps you motivated.......2007-01-12
This is a very useful tool when trying to get back in shape. It keeps your workouts interesting and efficient. It is truly waterproof and can take the abuse of pool deck use and storage in pool bog between workouts. I recommend it to the amateur swimmer who uses swimming to stay in shape. I borrowed a friend's and then bought my own and use it every time I swim.
Author Comment.......2005-11-14
Mr. Zohar is correct that The Waterproof Coach is more helpful to the beginning swimmer or triathlete than to the competitive swimmer. The workouts are mostly freestyle because most fitness swimmers are not proficient in the other strokes. The book is a bit pricey at $29.95 but that is because it is printed on completely waterproof paper. The paper costs three times as much as regular paper. In addition, the workout pages are cut into thirds so that the swimmer can mix and match workouts. This is an expensive part of the manufacturing process. Most of the fitness swimmers and triathletes who have purchased the book since 1997 have been happy with it.
A Waste of Money.......2005-10-15
In all fairness, I must begin by stating that I am not a triathlete. I am a swimmer. There's a difference. Maybe that's the reason I expected a book that would supply me with some new training ideas. Nada! This book offers the most basic sessions imaginable. Any swimmer can think up better sessions. In fact, you can freely download better training sessions from various internet sites. No drills to speak of in the book. Also, it is assumed that the reader is only swimming freestyle, so there is no stroke training. Lastly, the price is high - $30!
All these points caused me to return the book, inspite of incurring a refund loss.
Save your money.

Customer Reviews:
His Methods Work.......2007-10-04
This book is great. For the person that said he had them running 17 miles the first week. First, if they would have read the book, he has a scratch program in the back of the book for true beginners. Second, your running ( actually probably walking)those miles at
<70% your max heart rate if your just beginning to run. These is a great book. I have read and implemented his method into my marathon training program, and had not run in more than 5 years when I started. I have had no injuries, and about to run my first marathon. If you are patient the first month and read the book his method works.
Don't Over-train.......2007-04-09
Runners will find this guide to managing your heart rate during workout especially helpful, but athletes of all kinds will find something useful.
Serious runners' guide has lessons for all.......2007-02-07
Parker's message is that most runners over-train by following the standard advice to keep their heart-rate between 70-85% of maximum for their daily workouts. He explains first that the percentage should be based on the range between resting and absolute max heart-rate, not simply the max value. But his main point is that you should alternate easy and hard days - on the easy days, keep below 70%, and on the hard ones, above 85%. This allows the glycogen level to recover between hard runs, which the conventional method fails to do.
As a middle-aged layabout trying to fend of aging by jogging rather than a real runner, I found the book worked for me, increasing my endurance and even my pleasure in running.
Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot.......2007-02-04
This book is for runners, as a walker it is of limited value.
Book Geared for Runners.......2006-11-10
I ended up sending this book back because it is really geared more towards a runner. Not someone like me who walks mostly and lifts weights for more general health. I ended up sending this book back because it was a little too complicated for me. If you are someone who is looking for a book to help a beginner with a heart monitor, I wouldn't suggest this particular book.
I imagine it's a great resource for a runner though!

I learned quite a bit, but I think it's too focused on workouts rather than teaching. Not bad though, just not the greatest.
Swim Faster With Less Effort.......2007-04-09
These drills will make you a faster, more efficient swimmer. The tips will especially help you improve your freestyle.
Must have for every freestyle swimmers.......2007-01-19
I can swim all of the 4 strokes. I learn free-style at around 15, since then I've practiced on and off for more than 20 years, but never able to swim a little bit faster, or more efficiently. First of all, I have to confess that I never hire a coach so I only learn by mimicking other swimmers and listening to friends who swim faster than me. I never thought about my swimming technique could be improved by any means.
I bought this book 2 years ago. Read it in a day and put it in the shelf. Until recently I started trying the drills. The SGB drill (without any fins) made me feel very strange at first and hardly believe I couldn't even finish the first 25m without suffocation. After practiced another 3-4 sessions, I feel I can swim much more efficient with simply practiced the SGB drill. After I practiced first 3-4 drills, I swim almost 1/4 faster than I was and feel much less tired.
After then, I also read a number of swimming books, but never find one better than this for improving freestyle. For anyone who would like to improve other three strokes, I highly recommend the Championship Swimming by Tracey.
Actually more like a 10/10!!!.......2005-12-15
This book is amazing. I am a novice swimmer who falls at the very beginning of Hines' workout zones. I read the first half of the book in an hour, copied one of his FIRST workouts onto a sheet of paper, stuck it into a plastic sheet protector and headed off to the pool. My freestyle was a mess. I couldn't swim more than three lengths without my arms burning, my legs turning to rubber, etc. Now, i have shaved 4 strokes off one length and can get to the other side without feeling like I'm on my death throes. I never thought fitness books worked until I read this book. I'm a slightly overweight, slightly out of shape person who has never really been athletic and just quit smoking. But now, I go to the pool almost every day (after all, I'm only 20!!) and I can't WAIT to start out a new workout in Hines' book. I feel more confident, more in shape and more athletic.
10/10!!!!
Fitness Swimming.......2005-09-26
Overal, a good book that explains this style of swimming. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the absence of illustrations. The use of photography to show the actual steps in the Total Immersion style of swimming would help significantly. I would recommend the DVD "Freestyle Made Easy" by Terry Laughlin as a critical companion to this book. The DVD clearly demonstrates the technique in a way that the book does not.
