Book Description

Children ages 4 to 8 have a hard time grasping the concept of “God.” But it can be done through the person of Jesus. Told in a wonderfully inviting style, this Bible storybook shares many beloved Bible stories and reveals how the news and message of Jesus unfolds throughout Scripture, from the Old Testament all the way through the New Testament. Jesus in the Story helps readers love and appreciate Jesus and begin their own journey of faith. Beautiful 4-color artwork throughout.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great art, great theology, great storytelling.......2007-10-11

The art in this book is amazing, its a real treasure.

The theology that is communicated is both deep and simple. I wish someone had explained these things to me as a child.

The story telling is great, the author is a real poet and wordsmith that attracts the admiration of even the parents reading it.

The grat Bible stories are told in such a way that they form one big story with Jesus as the main character. Its a childrens book in which Jesus is central and our children are free to be a much loved secondary character.

Makes a great gift.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2007-10-02

I ordered this book for my grandchildren after I heard a reading from the book on a radio program. My daughter loves the book--as do her children. She uses it for story time and devotional time. Clear presentation of the Gospel with each story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-08

Instead of just stories this book brings out the "meaning" behind each, that it's all about Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars Showing the Centrality of Christ in the Scriptures to Children.......2007-08-18

Is the Bible a book of stories? good morals? heroes? No, suggests Sally Lloyd-Jones. Influenced by New York pastor and author Timothy Keller, Lloyd-Jones takes the major movements in the Bible's plot line as well as the familiar Sunday School stories and shows children how the entire Bible points to one man, the God-Man: Jesus Christ.

This is an excellent resource for families in a biblically illiterate age. I highly recommend this book to you. Another outstanding resource is David Helm's The Big Picture Story Bible.

5 out of 5 stars An asset to devotion time........2007-08-13

My daughter and I use this book probably twice a week. The stories are short, but not too short. They all leave the door wide open for a discussion about Jesus. My daughter enjoys the stories as do I. Plenty of well-drawn pictures too. An asset to our devotion time.

Book Description

When a charming polar bear cub climbs into bed one night, she asks her Mama a very important question--one that little "human cubs" often wonder about, too: "Where did I come from?"

As Mama bear tucks her youngest cub under the quilts, she gently, tenderly, and reassuringly communicates the message loving parents everywhere (bears and non-bears alike) want their little ones to hear: "We wanted you very, very much, and we are so very glad because--"God gave us you."

Perfect for bedtime, naptime, storytime or anytime, God Gave Us You provides a valuable opportunity to build children's self-esteem every day and assure each one that he or she truly is a welcomed, precious, and treasured gift from the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!!.......2007-09-22

This is the BEST BEST BEST book in my opinion. Each page describes how the mama bear and daddy bear wanted a family, and they waited, and her belly grew bigger and they prayed each night for a healty baby, etc.. It's just such a great book. Each page ends with the phrase, "God Gave Us You!" When I read this book to my baby I point up her tummy to her nose each time I saw the 'God Gave us You' part and she always smiles.

5 out of 5 stars a question, really.......2007-06-23

I've read the reviews and I'm wondering--is this book appropriate for an adoptive family? My kids were adopted from China, and I know God gave them to us. Is this book specific to birth parents and the birth experience? Thanks for sharing.

5 out of 5 stars A Precious Book.......2007-05-30

This book was right on the mark! It expressed exactly what my husband and I were feeling during our pregnancy and delivery of our daughter. Reading the book made me cry. The story is very special to me. Now, I give it to all my friends that become new parents as a gift!

Whether you see the Bible as a literal revelation of God's word, a guide for life, or a wonderful set of stories, The DK Illustrated Family Bible--a colorful, accessible reference source---can be the cornerstone of your family's knowledge of scripture. Based on the modern English of the New International Version Bible, this stunning, lavishly illustrated 384-page book is an interpretation of the Bible rather than a complete edition. The most important stories, such as "The Tower of Babel" and "The Sower," are presented chronologically with full-color illustrations supported by helpful captions. Each story is complemented by illustrated side panels explaining key words and concepts, as well as by photographs of actual sites, artifacts, and works of art. The people of the Bible are defined in appendices for both the Old and New Testaments and throughout the text as needed.

The production team for the book included advisors from different denominations, ensuring that all faiths are treated with equal respect. Jewish and Middle Eastern history and traditions are explained in context, providing a better understanding of the period and the rise of Christianity. As a reference for both youngsters and adults, this beautifully designed, thoughtfully arranged book offers a superb introduction to the basic Biblical stories and to the significance of the Bible. (Ages 10 to adult)

Book Description

Explications of particular passages and clear explanations of key words are backed up by extensive maps, works of art and photographs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's Bible.......2007-08-16

Beautiful illustrations. Archeological findings, cultural and scientific comments on the side give flesh to the places, people and events happened in the Bible. Stories are succinct and to-the-point, but still keeps the integrity of the original Words of God. Highly recommended! Amen!

2 out of 5 stars Really hideous artwork........2003-12-28

Not up to the quality of most DK books - beware! Only a few small photographs here and there. Mostly drawn illustrations that look very dated. The artwork spoils what otherwise would be an OK book overviewing the Bible. Also weighs about 20 lbs! Hard to hold.

5 out of 5 stars An ideal starting place.......2002-07-11

This book provides an excellent presentation because it smoothes out the Bible and provides a coherent, easily comprehensible, linear framework of understanding. The most helpful aspect of this arrangement of material is that in the section covering the Gospel books, it presents selected chapters in chronological order (Sunday School materials might have set a precedent here).

It's like an ideally arranged compendium of Sunday School booklets, with helpful background sections introducing major parts of the Bible. It uses a classic style of graphics, combined with various types of art as DK Publishing excels in.

Everyone who is studying Christianity should read this first, to set up a basic framework of understanding. This book portrays clearly and efficiently a point of reference to answer "What is the orthodox conventional reading of the Bible?"

This book reveals the anti-Semitism that builds up in the book of Acts; the Jews who supposedly persecuted the Christians are always shown in a two-dimensional, cardboard way, with mean expressions on their faces. This book clearly portrays the conventional Christian reading of this material. It's a good, clear portrayal of the standard orthodox way of reading the Bible.

There is an appendix of people's names in the back. The book lacks, most of all, a set of genealogy diagrams. It has a fairly good map in front, but could use more maps or at least a guide to the little maps that are dispersed throughout.

It has a great index. After reading the book cover-to-cover, I highlighted the 50% of the index entries that are least clear to me, to do a 2nd, review pass. I played a Bible trivia game and was inspired to read this book because I lacked too many of the standard Bible stories. I can tell that I'll do much better in that Bible trivia game, and will do even better after reviewing more of the unfamiliar entries I found in this book's index.

I felt that getting through this book required the most perseverance when wading through the section about the kings who did or didn't worship God, and the section about Jesus' parables -- these are covered well, but these weren't the sections of the Bible I was most interested in. My favorite sections of the book -- the subjects I was already most curious about -- were the stories between Eden and the later kings, and the stories between the Crucifixion and Revelation. The book has a nice treatment of Revelation and explains its political context. In the middle of the book, the parables and wisdom literature is covered.

I treasure this book and am glad to have read the Bible in this clear and understandable form. Next, I may read the Bible Handbook by DK Publishing (John Bowker). I'm reading Bowker's 2002 book from DK Publishing, God: A Brief History. I've also read the pocket-size Bible handbook from DK Publishing, which isn't very enlightening -- it's a tiny, somewhat random subset of the Illustrated Family Bible. I also recommend the books by DK Publishing, which I have read, covering Christianity, Myth, World Religions, and Philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading and images.......2000-12-09

This book is great because it gives a very readable overview of the main Biblical stories. The illustrations are a plus and make the stories easy to absorb and remember. The sidebars provide very useful information. There appears to be a high degree of scholarship in the analyses. Of course, because this is a "family" bible, perhaps a few of the more sordid elements may not be covered. Still, this is a wonderful way to get an overall feel for the Old and New Testaments

5 out of 5 stars Every Christian Family should own a copy!.......1999-09-12

Noting with horror that "Teen Witch" is number 1 in the "teen - spirituality" category on amazon.com, I am at least pleased to see this book to be sitting currently at number 2.

This is a great book, we have it as part of our christian family library that we keep out in the open for everyone to use. I often just end up opening the book to any page and reading, every page is absolutely FASCINATING and gives a deep historical perspective to the bible. Lots of pictures to break up the text and give dimension to the topics.

Book Description

Bestselling author Karen Kingsbury-herself an adoptive mother-offers an inspiring collection of true stories to remind readers that God is present in every adoption. Adoption has become increasingly prevalent, with recent statistics showing that about one out of every 10 Americans is an adoptee. There's something about this gift of love that is truly miraculous-that someone would willingly give a life to someone else so that they might have a family. A TREASURY OF ADOPTION MIRACLES is filled with true stories about adoption. As someone who adopted three boys herself (three best friends from Jamaica), Karen knows firsthand the wonder and joy of adding to one's family. Here, she details miraculous stories of adoption, giving readers glimpses of the love and new beginnings as seen through the eyes of the men, women, and children involved.

If you need a pick me up, if you need encouragement, if you need to laugh, if you need to cry, if you need affirmation that you are doing or did the right thing by adopting - this book is for you! Absolutely inspirational - a must for that long road to adopting!

5 out of 5 stars Encouraging Read for anyone involved in the Adoption Process.......2006-01-12

This book truly provides encouragement to those who find their lives touched by adoption or who are deciding whether to take that step in their lives. The only flaw, from my perspective, would be that the stories heavily focused on adoptions through a lawyer and not through an agency. That said, I appreciated that the stories were varied in their perspective - some were from the adoptive family, the birth family, the social worker, adoptee. In addition, there were a variety of different reasons and situations for seeking adoption. Finally the stories involved adoptions that were domestic and international, as well as of varying ages. The biggest blessing was, however, the encouragement it gave. There are not many people who can truly understand the feelings adoption brings out except for those who have experienced it. That being said, those who have experienced it are able to encourage others in their waiting on God like no one else can. If you need encouragement in the waiting, help in discerning whether adoption is for you, or just want to understand the emotions of this amazing process, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Family Devotional.......2001-03-12

I've had this book for 3 years and both my children (now aged 5 and 11) still love to hear the stories. The pictures are colorful and enjoyable and the bible stories are well placed in the story themes. The story set up begins with a situation the bear family encounters and then a bible story that relates to that situation is recollected by one of the bears. The last story Heaven Can't Wait will have the reader teary eyed, and is told in such a way that although the child will experience the sadness of death, they will see the victory of eternal life with God. I wish there were more books written of Big Ideas In the Bible. This book makes a great family devotional!

5 out of 5 stars My 6 year old loved it........1999-07-31

We were on vacation at a friend's. They brought out this book to read for her bedtime story. Well, we had to read 2 of the stories that night. The first thing the next morning, she got the book out again and asked me to read more. While the other kids were out swimming in the pool, she insisted I read her 2 more of the stories. When we got home from vacation, she told me she wanted to use her allowance money and buy a copy of the book herself. The tone of the book is warm and encouraging. The spiritual truths are shared in a beautiful and loving way.

I was surprised no one reviewed this darling Vegan book...lol
My son who is 5 has been a Veggie fan for as long as he knows. I was making up all sorts of silly activities and reading random scripture for our family devotionals. After running out of plans I saw this book and ordered it. It's very practical for most parents and kids. We love the silly stories and fun bible facts with each devotional. Sections include a story, bible reading, discussion questions, bible fact, game and application section. You don't have to do all of it but we try to. Some nights we get in bed late so we had to skip the book and just pray. My son literally cries if we don't read his devotional, he absolutely loves it. You will see biblical application of scripture in this devotional. Not just cute stories but good foundation for our Children. Topics range from perseverance, humility, faith when all fails, loving our neighbors and the list goes on and on. Thanks Veggie family!!!

Book Description

The best place to teach children about our faith is in the home. The Anglican Family Prayer Book is a resource for Episcopal families who want to pass on Anglican prayers and traditions to their children and teach faith in everyday settings.

This important new resource has been compiled by The Rev. Canon Anne Kitch, well known for her children's books, Bless This Day and One Little Church Mouse. A parent as well as an educator, Anne Kitch introduces these Anglican prayers and practices with stories from her own life, as well as brief information about the history and use of the prayers.

The perfect resource for families, especially those who may be new to the Episcopal Church, as well as church school teachers, youth ministers, and clergy, The Anglican Family Prayer Book helps parents and children pray together. Prayers for morning and evening, blessings, nighttime prayers, prayers for ordinary and special occasions, intercessory prayers, prayers of the Eucharist, and prayers for use during the special seasons of the Church year make this book one that families will use every day.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Uncommonly good..........2004-02-27

Anne Kitch is probably better known to readers as the author of children's books (`Bless this Day', `Bless this Way', and `One Little Church Mouse') - this is not a children's book per se, but it does keep in mind both Kitch's love for writing for children, and her special ministry of education that involves children.

Children are integral to the family (that goes without saying, perhaps), and prayer should also be integral to the family. This book provides a framework, suggestions, prayer texts and inspiration for incorporating prayer into the family life on a daily basis, around gathering times such as meals, as well as other parts of life.

In many ways, no Anglican can escape the liturgical patterns of the Book of Common Prayer or the liturgical daily cycles of ancient monastic systems (nor, indeed, do they generally want to!). This book begins with a wonderful introduction to what common prayer is - it is not common as in `uninteresting' or `ordinary', but common as in the root of the word `communal' - these are things done in common, in community, and the family provides a perfect context and beginning for true community. There are many common prayers held in common across the broader lines of Christianity - the Lord's Prayer, the Song of Mary (Magnificat), St. Francis' prayer, etc., and these are laid out in the first section with introductions accessible to all.

The second section looks at daily prayer - morning, evening, graces, blessings, bedtime prayers, as well as prayers for days of the week. How one goes about prayer, in the family group and when one is alone, is important, and Kitch discusses that at the beginning of this section.

The third section has prayer suggestions and texts for people and occasions. Special occasions in the life of the family - anniversaries and birthdays, new homes, baptisms, grieving - as well as prayers for important members of the extended family - distant relatives, friends, visitors, even pets - are included here. There are prayers for healing and reconciliation, and prayers for thanksgiving and celebration. There is more than one way to talk to God, Kitch reminds us, and one can use either the acronym ACTIP (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Intercession and Petition) or ACTS (replacing the final two with the word Supplication) as a reminder for the various ways we talk to God in prayer.

The final two sections bring the world of the prayers of the Anglican church into relationship with the prayers of the family with an overview and text samples of prayers from the Eucharistic liturgy (with a brief discussion on how to teach children to worship) and prayers for the liturgical year (special prayers for major holidays and seasons).

This is a wonderful resource, a small book with big print (all the better for small hands to grasp and readers of all ages to find inviting in word and physical form). I highly recommend it to Anglicans of any age, and even to those beyond the Anglican tradition who want a structure to their prayer life, particularly that of the family.

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous, delicious illustrations with sweet text.......2006-11-22

Jackie Morris' illustrations touch the deep, indigenous wells of the soul and capture the essence of the animals and humans she portrays. Her depiction of the Holy Family are outstanding and made me unable to withdraw my eyes or interest. The book layout and design is gorgeous and feels like a gift from both artist and publisher. The story is sweet, simple and able to touch all people, all ages, even all religions, offering no exclusivity.

A perfect holiday gift for anyone, especially yourself. Beautiful!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not a "family" Bible.......2007-08-23

While this Bible story book retells many common and uncommon Bible storeis, there are three major drawbacks. First, the author takes liberty to add to and enhance many of the stories (while he admits to this on the appropriate pages, it is hard for children to understand the difference of story and truth). Additionally, the author mentions the word "sex" twice - once in the story of Hagar and once in the story of David & Bathsheba. Further, the author summarizes the book of Song of Songs, which while it is biblical, is not appropriate for children. These factors make this NOT a "family" story Bible. We do not recommend this story Bible for your family.

5 out of 5 stars My 5 year old loves it.......2007-05-14

This book came recommended by my sister, who is a Presbyterian minister. I was looking for a way to include scripture in our daily lives but felt that the traditional devotional books were too structured for DD yet. I have found that reading these stories brings the Bible to life for her and I'm learning a great deal too. I would recommend this for any families and even those without children for learning the scripture and Bible stories in a way that make them interesting and memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Good family reading.......2006-11-11

This is a charming version of the Bible for the family to read together--adults reading to kiddies too young to be able to read, for instance. It is the best version that I've seen for small children who have to be read to, and has good illustrations. Our 14 months old will sit down and "read" it aloud, looking over the pictures, for her own benefit. She favors the scenes with animals. I liked it because it tries to cover Old and New Testaments both and seems to touch on all the books of the Bible in a simplified way.

5 out of 5 stars No Sugar-Coating.......2005-09-10

This is an excellent Bible particulary for folks of the Reformed/Presbyterian Tradition. The stories are told using real images and language -- it's not sugar-coated nor is the theology compromised by using a slightly elementary vocabulary. The illustrations are vivid and hold attention -- all in all, it's an excellent family Bible!

5 out of 5 stars Creative, Inclusive, Thoughtful and Playful.......2001-12-09

This is the only bible I am willing to read to my daughters, ages 4 and 6. I am very hard to please ... open in my spirituality, and desiring of inclusive material that is creative yet true to the sacred stories of the Christian tradition. This bible keeps my girls' interest and sparks their natural questions. It invites an open-ended sense of wonder, and avoids cliches or pat language. And I enjoy it. There are many stories of women in the bible, and all the stories are thoughtful, inclusive and understandable.
