Better understanding of preemie .......2007-05-05
This was a great book to read while my daughter was in the hospital. It had a good flow and helpful information. The only part that I didn't like was the section on breastfeeding. The author seemed to have a bad experience with her preemie and breastfeeding and her discouragement really came out in this section. I guess it was good though because it motivated me to touch base with a lactation consultant so that I would not share in her breastfeeding disappointment. Overall this book did help me to better understand my new and unexpected life with my preemie.

We bought this when our son was born 10 weeks early. This book is very well written and easy to understand. It takes you through the early NICU days all the way to school age. This book was very helpful to us during the NICU time because when it first happened we were clueless (and we sometimes found it hard to get answers from doctors). It gives you information so that you know what questions to ask your baby's doctor. This book explained pretty much anything preemie related.

The Best Guide through preemie parenthood.......2002-01-29
I am both a physician and a mother of a son who arrived 11 weeks early. This book has helped in every facet of my premature parenthood from breastfeeding (or, in my case, my ongoing attempts) to just feeling I was not the only preemie parent out there. In addition, the explanations of the various medical problems premature babies may face are excellent. Truly, a book that every premature parent would benefit from having.

Our son was born at 26 weeks (3 months early) and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until one day past his due date. We were given this book after he'd been there one month. Let me tell you what a life-saver it was! We had been given a "crash course" in the care delivered to a premature infant... very scary stuff. Wires, machines, noise, drugs -- and in the middle of it all this unbelievably tiny human being who is your child. This book took much of the fear away and instead educated us. Preemies don't stop being preemies when they come home! This book gives the technical data in an easy to understand format that is not condescending and also focuses on the emotional as well as physical needs of the baby. Additionally, it gives contacts and information on potential problems, how to spot them early, and how to handle them. There is also a good referal list in the back. I would recommend this book not only to preemie parents, but to anyone in contact with a preemie and their family. PS. As of this writing, our son is one year old and doing great!

I haven't used this book much at all. Books by Joseph Garcia-Prats and Dana Wechsler Linden were much more helpful.

Disapointed.......2002-08-13
I bought this book and was very excited when it arrived. When I started to read the book I became very disapointed. I felt that the book skimmed over the subjects. I thought I got a better explaination from the NICU unit then this book. I frowned at that the book only talked about breastfeeding moms and nothing about formula feeding moms. Overall the best way to describe my thoughts about this book is very disapointed. I hope this will help those moms out there that had a premie born before 34 to 36 weeks.
A reliable source of informatrion presented realistically.......2001-11-09
As the mom of 29 week twins, this book filled in the gaps when the NICU staff didn't have the time (or if I wasn't ready to hear all the details). It allowed us the time to read the details and think of our questions before approaching our nurses. We knew in advance that our twins would be early and we skimmed the book to get a handle of what might be to come. It was frightening but prepared us for what we were to experience and it was realistic (difficult to read in some sections but true to life). This is not a book for those expecting a pre-term infant (or I advise you only to read the chapters aiming at this gestational age). It is aimed at those with quite premature babies. Our boys ran the gamut of what was described here - some were only scares (thankfully) but others crashed into our lives including a diagnoses at 6 mths of age of cerebral palsy. This is the realities of prematurity and you need to be prepared that this might happen to your child when making decisions for them.

We, My Wife and I just want to thanks the Writers of this book for helping us to stay relax during our 2 and half months that our baby MONICA was on the NICU. We were very tired when we get home every night and then reading the things that happens to our baby those days. The book was very helpful to us even with the bad real facts like the dead of some baby's. We never thought that something like this situation can happen to us, and I remember that one day we were at the hospital and reading a magazine, in a little spot of a page I found a review of this book, I showed to my wife and the next thing we did after living the hospital was to order this book. Good Source of Information for Parents of Preemies.......2000-08-09
While this book was at times difficult to read, it was very informative and helped fill in the gaps between our daily talks with the NICU pediatricians. It's suited for both the parents of preemies (34 weeks or less) or pre-term babies (34-36 weeks); there is a chapter dedicated to the latter, and much of the material is applicable to both. Hopefully you'll never have a need for this book, but if you do it's a good one.

It is a marvelously optimistic and understanding presentation of the challenges and opportunities for surmounting them written for families' experiencing the birth and care of premature infants. Active participation of parents' in the often unfamiliar setting of the intensive care nursery is guided and encouraged by the authors, one of whom has specialized in the care of premature infants for more than 25 years. Strategies for coping with this emotional and complex life event are discussed with a rare combination of empathy and medically accurate detail. Ways in which parents and families can be advocates for their infants both in the nursery and later at home are presented by mothers and fathers, in their own words, who have cared for their own premature babies. Sources of support for parents are recounted by the authors and within these parents' stories. I highly recommend this book to families seeking reassurance and accessible knowledge about the changes and adjustments accompanying premature birth.

This book was very helpful in understanding what was happening with my baby while he was in the hospital and after I brought him home. None of my friends had preemies so they could offer advice because its a little different. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who wants a reference guide or information on premature babies.

When my son was born 10 weeks premature this came as a gift from a friend. The writing is great and really helped me understand what was to be expected with my son. The book not only exmplains things medically, but also has a good way to comfort parents as well. Our son is doing great is close to discharge. If you or someone you know have a preemie in the NICU, this is a great course of comfort and support.

In addition to the Linden preemie book I tagged, this one is also a must have....Having a preemie, especially unexpected, is a traumatic experience. On top of all the usual postpartum issues, you are faced with daily hospital visits, and coming home to an empty nursery. The nurses are short tempered, the doctors are too busy, and none of your friends can relate. This book is an absolute godsend.

This book was a great read. It answered most of my questions that were surfacing after having a premature baby myself. I wish I would have known about the book when my daughter was up in the NICU because the majority of the information has to do with the early stages after birth. I highly recommend this book for any parent who has a preemie.

This is a chapter book. Not as useful as a refenrence book but written well w/ great advise and will answer all your questions, you just have to search for the answers. Most of these preemie books provide the same info, therefore if you need to get one--I recommend, "The Essential Guide for Parents of Premature Babies." It is easier to find things and you don't have to read the whole chapter to do so.

The premature birth of your baby or babies is a medical crisis. But more than that, it is a family crisis. When your baby* is born too soon, you must face not only the medical aspects of prematurity but also the many emotional aspects of parenting your premature baby. During hospitalization, after homecoming, and perhaps throughout childhood, there are three overarching, emotionally intense challenges you face:
1) Coping with feelings, which includes moving through your grief, adjusting, and coming to terms with your baby's premature birth and its consequences
2) Developing your parental identity, which includes feeling connected to your baby, playing an indispensable role in the NICU, and becoming the kind of parent you want to be
3) Managing your relationships, which includes communicating with your partner, with other family members and friends, and with your baby's health care providers
This book addresses all these challenges, and more.
Indeed, this book rides on the crest of a new wave. In recent years, neonatology has become much more than medical technology. Along with providing state-of-the-art interventions, more and more NICUs are also providing developmentally supportive care to babies-and to their parents. Developmentally supportive care for a premature baby consists of close contact with the parents and being surrounded by the muted, gentle, nurturing conditions that mimic the womb. Developmentally supportive care for parents consists of honoring their need to get physically close and feel emotionally connected to their newborn and become confident in taking care of this baby. In other words, developmentally supportive care tries to give babies and parents what they've been promised.
Instead of banishing parents to waiting rooms or allowing them to merely look through a plate-glass window, modern NICU policy welcomes parents as integral members of their baby's NICU caregiving team and considers parental involvement paramount-good for the babies, good for the parents, good for the family. Indeed, when parents are given opportunities to be close to their baby and are encouraged and coached in caregiving, they can become attuned, responsive, and sure with their little one. When parents are informed about their baby's conditions and treatments, they can advocate for their baby's needs. When parents are supported emotionally, they can be more emotionally available to their baby. These positive, connective emotional experiences between parent and baby contribute to optimal infant development. This book reflects and accompanies the emerging respect for the developmental needs of the entire family and the spreading philosophy of family-centered care.
There are many good books that explain your premature baby's medical conditions, developmental diagnoses, treatments, and procedures, and that guide you in caregiving tasks. This book is different. It focuses on your experiences, feelings, and relationships around the delivery, hospitalization, homecoming, and long-term parenting of your premature baby and child. It provides suggestions and support for coping, adjusting, and finding your way. It focuses on how you can deal with the challenges you meet so you can revel in the pleasures of nurturing and cherishing your little one. With quotes from many parents, this book also strives to provide you with the comfort of knowing that your reactions make sense and that you're not alone.

*Usually it is awkward to refer to both singleton and multiple babies in the same sentence by writing "baby or babies" or even "baby(ies) and "child(ren)." So most of the time, we just refer to "your baby" or "your child." Organizing this book was very challenging. There is a time line to follow, but the three overarching themes of "coping with feelings," "developing your parental identity," and "managing your relationships" come up at every turn. At any point on your personal journey, you may feel emotionally overwhelmed, your growth and development as a parent and a person continues, and you will be dealing with your partner, your baby's health care providers, and others. Since books are naturally linear and don't take well to any other arrangements, we encourage you to weave your way through this book to match the nonlinear path your experience of having a preemie takes. Some sections may feel more appropriate than others at different times, depending on your unique situation, your personality, and where you are in your journey. Use the Table of Contents and the Index to find your currently pressing concerns.

Every NICU should recommend this for parents.......2006-11-17
Don't be daunted by the book's hefty size! This was without a doubt the most useful book of all that I referenced during our two months in the NICU. Other books explain all of the technology, procedures, etc., but this one covers the mental and emotional side of the NICU - handling the one-step-forward-two-steps-back preemie dance, grief at the premature birth experience, anxieties about care, worries for the future, feelings about separation and having others taking care of your child, and the hesitancy in parenting with so many barriers in the way. This book was invaulable during the hospital experience and has been such a help in the homecoming experience. Already I know that this will take us through the next few years, as it also covers topics regarding developmental issues and what to expect as our child grows. In addition to the advice in the book, there are quotes throughout from other preemie parents who have handled all of these issues. This was one book that didn't manage to have anything to scare us; rather it validated all of the feelings we've had. The health care professionals with whom we have shared this book were impressed and wanted their own copies! I can't recommend this book highly enough!

... since this is the *definitive* book for people like me who've been through this life-changing experience. And as an avid reader who's already bought many other Preemie books, I sure don't say WOW lightly.
As other reviewers noted, I too wish I had come across this resource much much sooner. Our 30 week twins spent 8+ verrrrrry stressful weeks in the NICU. The months following their joyful homecoming was (and still is) constantly colored by awareness & vigilance re: issues related to their prematurity.
In particular, this book does a terrific job of validating & acknowledging a parent's feelings that only other families who've been through this journey are going to "get it". I felt like the book often like that song... somebody to lean on.
Good therapy .......2005-08-29
This book was very helpful to me and my husband. We had a long NICU stay of 9 weeks and felt like we were the only ones in the unit who wasn't in and out. This book caters to people like us who had to deal with the on-going, never-ending days of procedures, tests, emotional ups and downs, and disappointments. I was really able to prepare myself for discharge with the chapters about homecoming. The best part of this book was that we didn't feel so alone.

What I wish I knew before I got pregnant........2004-06-26
My son was born prematurely June 10, 2004. My 30 week ultrasound came back showing that my ambionic fluid was low and my baby only weighed 2 lbs. 7 ounces. The next day I was sent by my OB/GYN to meet with a perinatologist. Within 15 minutes of meeting the specialist, I was told my baby would be born witihin 24 to 48 hours and was admitted to the hospital 30 minutes later. My son was born via emergency csection 27 hours later. I was 31 weeks into my pregancy. He will spend 9 weeks in neonatal ICU before he can come home. This so far, has been the hardest and most heartbreaking part of my entire pregnancy.
I am 30 years old and was diagnosed with chronic high blood pressure two years ago. This book is a step by step account of what happened to me. I developed pregnancy induced hypertension which turned into preeclampsia. None of my doctors (family practicioner or OB/GYN) told me how dangerous and high risk my pregnancy would be. I wish I knew then what this book has taught me now, it has been a real eyeopener and lifesaver.

Upon hearing you're pregnant, most people will only have images of perfect babies. When hearing something is going wrong with your pregnancy, most people have no idea what to expect.
When I heared I was going to have my baby within half an hour, at 26 weeks of pregnancy... I had no idea what was laying ahead of me.
This book prepares you on what to expect when you have a high-risk pregnancy and takes you trough the 24 hours after delivery, your preemies growth and maturation, the neonatal unit, bringing your baby home and later-life development. There is also a part on babies with special needs and a part about when things go wrong.
From the many lonely hours I could not be with my baby, I spent many reading this book. The stories of other parents helped me survivng the nicu and the many charts and statistics helped me to get an image on what to expect.

A very helpful book for reading during your high-risk pregnancy and when your baby is in the NICU. I did think that the anecdotes about women's experiences with terbutaline and magnesium sulfate were unnecessarily alarming. This book complemented Linden's Essential Guide for Parnets of Premature Babies nicely.
Helpful beyond words.......2001-04-30
This is THE book I wished I'd known about in advance when we developed problems later in my pregnancy. I actually think anyone expecting a baby where there is a possibility of it becoming a high-risk pregnancy (and face it, that could be any of us, right?) should read this book so that you can be prepared to be the best possible advocate for yourself and your child in the NICU and during the transition out. It will also help you understand the complexities of what goes on in the NICU so you can work well with the staff caring for your infant.

This book has been a God-send. Its clear, comprehensive text, helpful illustrations, and authoritative advice (the lead author is a top Houston neonatologist) is just what my husband and I needed when we found out our baby was going to be born prematurely.
We especially liked all of the stories and testimony from parents, people who have experienced the fear and uncertainty of high-risk pregnancy. Their stories are incredibly reassuring. We needed to know we weren't alone.
This book is a must-have for any parent whose pregnancy is not going as planned.

A friend of my husbands gave me this book a few weeks after my preemie was born. I wish this book had been given to me the minute I hit the NICU door.
Extremely informative and comforting, especially for a new parent unexpectedly thrown into the NICU community. I found it very easy to ready. It helped to extinguish most of my feelings of inadequacy and made me realize that what my child and I were experiencing was VERY NORMAL for our situation. The Appendix of Medical Terms assisted me in becoming more actively involved in the care of my preemie.
I wish an updated edition was available as some of the drugs being used and the medical treatments and terms are a little outdated.

This was the best book I have seen for premature babies. When our twin boys were born at 29 weeks, the hospital gave us a book that we could refer to. Everytime you would look at the book it scared you to death. I found this book and I kept it with me at all times. When ever anything came up I would refer to it. The book is very realistic but also very positive. I still refer to it even though our boys are 2. The book is very helpful. I would recomend this book to everyone. It really helped us out through this difficult time.

Great resource for parents!!!!.......2001-11-16
I purchased this book after the premature birth of our son. He was considered a "micro preemie" being born at 1 lb 14 oz. We were told in the NICU that many preemies have challenges that were unlike "typical" children, and we thought it would be helpful to refer to this book and to educate ourselves so that we could help identify problems that many pediatricians overlook in preemies.
This book is an absolute must-have for any parent of a preemie. I know that weight is always a concern, and the book included boy and girl weight charts and seperated it even further to their birth weight (born less than/greater than 1500 grams.) We still use the weight chart today (our son is 2 1/2 years old)
and it can be used up to age 3.

Nothing can prepare you for the experience of having a premature baby. Often, once home with baby, parents are confronted with a child who is obviously different from the typical infant. Finding information and support is difficult, because of the very isolating nature of the experience- a tiny, often ill baby isn't able to cope with being carried to environments where parents could find support. In addition, outcomes are difficult to predict and preemies' issues can be as diverse as their personalities. Fortunately, Amy Tracy and Dianne Maroney's Your Premature Baby and Child provides insight and information in a practical guide that should reside on every preemie parent's bookshelf. Each chapter offers honest assurances about the emotional aspects of caring for a preemie, as well as accurate and detailed information about everything ranging from the homecoming experience, medical concerns, development and early intervention all the way through to beginning school. The epilogue is especially helpful; it validates the emotional effects of prematurity and offers insights from other parents, whose hope and understanding encourage those new to the roller coaster of prematurity. This book is one of the best resources written yet for parents of children born prematurely.
Better books out there.......2001-07-18
I did not use this book much at all. I thought books by Joseph A. Garcia-Prats and Dana Wechsler Linden were much more helpful.

This book kept me SANE during a very difficult time!.......2005-01-03
This book was an absolute godsend. My baby was born 6 weeks premature after a very long and difficult pregnancy. I spent the last 4 weeks of my pregnancy on complete hospital bedrest with preeclampsia, and my daughter was born via emergency c-section due to a severe drop in heart rate. She was placed on a ventilator, had central lines, and I couldn't even hold her until she was three days old. It was terrifying. However, while I was in the hospital, my neonatology group gave this book to me (we knew I wouldn't be able to carry her much longer due to my severe preeclampsia) and I began reading it a week before she was born. While the experience was very frightening and stressful, I really felt like I knew what was going on, and I didn't have so many nagging questions. If I thought of something during the night or while the doctors weren't around, I picked this book up and the answer was almost always there. Dr. Frank Manginello (the book's author) was my daughter's attending neonatologist while she was in the NICU, and I can't begin to tell you how amazing this man is. He's a brilliant physician and wonderfully compassionate. When meeting with him, he would encourage us to ask questions. When he finished answering one question, he would say, "Ok, what else?" We never felt rushed, and he cared for our daughter with love, compassion, and an absolute mastery of neonatal skills. His book is a reflection of his work. Our daughter went home 8 days after she was born, in time for her first Christmas! She is doing beautifully! I really feel this book helped me through the whole situation, and I thoroughly recommend it to any mom who has the prospect of having a preemie. It is really written for parents (like me!) who don't know anything about neonatal medicine and want the truth broken down simply step by step. This book is even broken into chapters regarding how premature the baby is. If you're researching this book, good luck to you, and I recommend it highly!
I just want to add that this book is not meant to be for emotional support, or a breastfeeding resource. That is the job of the NICU staff! Dr. Manginello was VERY encouraging and supportive of my decision to breastfeed my baby! This book is meant to be a resource to help answer questions you have about what happens to preemies, not an emotional resource! I don't think any book could effectively give the emotional support needed to get through this time. It just makes your experience easier when you know what's going on.
Half the picture.......2001-08-31
The emotional realities of life in the NICU are as important as the medical realities. This book doesn't do a good job of recognizing the importance of emotional support, and has tone that is authoritative but not warm or encouraging on an emotional level.
Not bad, for a reference book.......2001-01-06
When my ten week early preemie came back to the hospital of his birth, the nurses loaned me this book, as well as one on Kangaroo Care. This is a good REFERENCE book, meaning that it gives clear information on different things to expect from infants born within certain gestational periods, but does not seem to have a supportive emotional tone. Frankly, I am glad I read the loaner on Kangaroo Care first. It was informative as well as comforting during this very stressful time. I am thankful that my hospital not only loaned both books, but strongly advocates Kangaroo Care. I would recommend this reference book be used in ADDITION to an emotionally uplifting book, which would cover all the bases for parents.
Technically appropriate, emotionally crippled........1999-07-21
My son was born at 28 wks-while this book gave me all the med info-tech support I could have asked for, ultimately it felt 'hands off'. I am a huge advocate of kangaroo care for preemies, if you have a preemie PLEASE find a compassionate medical provider that understands and supports this kind of mother/child care! If you wish to breastfeed DO NOT GIVE UP! PUMP! It's not fun, but it can work. -DON'T SLEEP WITH YOUR CHILD IN YOUR BED?! At 16 mnths my son is just leaving our bed-it's been sweet, it's been HEALTHY. PLEASE read the Sears' 'The Baby Book' for emotional and common sense back-up, not geared specificly towards preemies, this book espouses the kind of HANDS ON parenting our children really need-especially our preemies. My '28-wkr' is healthy, bright and sweet-I credit kangaroo care and 'The Baby Book' for alot of it! I wish you the best.
Informative about the confusing time in the NICU........1999-07-09
This was a wonderful book. After getting home each night from the NICU I'd read up on what they told me about my son (born at 33 weeks). It is very important to read ONLY the sections that apply to your baby. Otherwise you'll worry about things that do not apply. I do not agree with Jenny William's review above. Sometimes while baby is NICU it CANNOT breast feed because sometimes preemies need special formula due to digestive problems. And many (as mine did) have alot of trouble learning to suck and need to be tube fed for awhile. This book covers the NICU from soup to nuts in a manner that the parent can understand.
