Book Description

A breakthrough book for America's 2.5 million breast cancer survivors, showcasing the pioneering "Focus on Healing" exercise-and-movement program touted by physicians coast-to-coast and recommended by the American Cancer Society.

The months following breast cancer treatment can bring a difficult combination of emotional and physical challenges, including a decreased range of motion, pain, fatigue, and depression. But when Sherry Lebed Davis's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1979, Davis and her two brothers, both physicians, created a special movement therapy program to speed their mother's healing. Spurring extraordinary success in her and many others, "Focus on Healing" soon became on of the first hospital-endorsed dance and exercise programs in the nation, a prescription that Davis came to appreciate even more when she herself became a breast-cancer survivor in 1996.

Taking a unique, proven approach to healing, Thriving After Breast Cancer shares the easy-to-follow techniques that have improved the lives of thousands of patients. Embracing psychological recovery and treatment of chronic pain, Davis's "Focus on Healing" regimen consists of stretches and dance-inspired moves that restore flexibility and balance while minimizing discomfort. With exercises to address a full range of specific situations, whether the reader has experienced chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, of a full masectomy, Thriving After Breast Cancer offers solutions that can be gently eased into a patient's routine. Now adopted by more than one hundred hospitals around the country (including New York City's prestigious Memorial Sloan-Kettering) and picking up where medical treatment leaves off, Davis's program gives breast cancer survivors an uplifting, empowering next step on the road to restoring the life that they life.

This book also addresses exercises and information for those with Lymphedema. However when you go to Google, Yahoo.com or any search engine.......this book does not come up when you type in Lymphedema. It does come up for a lot of other needs like cancer, exercise, health, disease, fitness, etc which is also what the book has in the way of exercise and information, but perhaps people with Lymphedema are missing out by not including the connection to Lymphedema as well.

Thank you for your time.

5 out of 5 stars A Life-Saver for Body and Spirit!.......2002-10-09

Upbeat, inspiring, innovative, medically sound, and therapeutic in the broadest, most uplifting sense! I was privileged recently to have been present at a Book Signing attended also by many women who had been members of the Focus on Healing Classes, some of them for a long time period. You have never seen such a vibrantly beautiful collection of "winners" gathered in one spot to celebrate the joys of participating in the program described. Sherry herself is Positive Force personified, and her cup-half-full take on life shines through every page of the book, as it describes her wonderful program. An absolute must-have for anyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer. Buy it!

Thriving After Breast Cancer is a revelation to breast cancer survivors. The models used are all survivors, all ages and shapes, and all beautiful, even with compression sleeves on! Sherry Lebed Davis has done a wonderful service for survivors by bring out this book of easy and accessible exercises for women who are going through an extremely difficult time. It is good to see the light at the end of the tunnel and to know that you can come out healthy, vibrant and alive! I highly recommend this book to breast cancer survivors (thrivers!) no matter how long ago they had surgery. The chapter on lymphedema, alone, is worth the price of the book.

Book Description

As women quickly discover, their life when treatment ends is very different from what it was before their diagnosis. Often exhausted, anxious, and emotionally volatile, they are beset by physical discomforts, fearful of intimacy, afraid for their children, worried about recurrence. Anticipating a return to “normalcy,” they discover that the old version of normal no longer applies.

There could be no more knowledgeable guide for women embarking on this complicated journey than Hester Hill Schnipper, who is herself both an experienced oncology social worker and a breast cancer survivor. This comprehensive handbook provides jargon-free information on the wide range of practical issues women face as they navigate the journey back to health, including:

•Managing physical problems such as fatigue, hot flashes, and aches and pains

•Handling relationships: your children, your partner, your parents, your friends.

•How to regain emotional and sexual intimacy

•Coping with financial and workplace issues

•Genetic testing: why, whether, when

•How to move beyond the fear of recurrence

•And much more

This indispensable book will help you rediscover your capacity for joy as you move forward into the future—as a survivor.

1 out of 5 stars too fatalistic for Type A readers or those remaining realistic but positive.......2007-04-13

I bought this during the gap between my lumpectomy and chemo. I found it horribly depressing, with quotes like "you'll never be carefree again". Yes, there will be some changes in my lifestyle, but that's also true of diabetes and other diseases/conditions.
Her whole attitude seems to be "when" the cancer returns rather than "if", which is not how I intend to live the rest of my life, however long that may be.

5 out of 5 stars Rings True, Says ChemoDIva.......2007-03-15

My sister just finished chemo and radiation for stage 3c breast cancer and this book, she says, is the best book she's read on the subject. Not all sunshine and roses, or something that is just too depressing for words. But like hearing from a good friend who is relating the same struggles that you are now going through.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative and helpful!!!.......2007-01-11

I found this book extremely helpful and helped me understand what was happening with me and my breast cancer. It also explains other treatments, how to deal with other people and their reaction to my cancer, and understand my friend's cancers. Highly recommend for anyone who is dealing with this diaease!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for.............2005-12-01

I found this book to be very depressing and dark. The author kept saying how cancer will haunt you the rest of your life, little hope to escape it, you'll just have to live with it. I've choosen differently, but this book was NOT helpful in my after treatment recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Not crazy..........2005-04-02

After all my treatments for breast cancer were done, everyone told me i should feel better-but i didn't! My feeling were much worse than i expected after so many months and i'm glad i found and read this book! It helped me understand that it is OK to have lingering fears and emotions and that it is normal-especially months after treatment! Maybe it's because she is a survivor too, that makes this book so great!

Book Description

Each year, around the world, over one million women will be told they have breast cancer. All will face surgery, and most will undergo radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal treatment. But the worry isn't over when treatment ends. In the months and years that follow, women are left with nagging questions, questions they often are afraid to ask: Author and 14 year breast cancer survivor Musa Mayer breaks the silence surrounding recurrence to talk frankly about the feelings of uncertainty and fear that breast cancer patients commonly face when their treatment ends, and for years thereafter. She reviews scientific literature (and debunks some commonly cited myths) by giving survival statistics corrected for current treatments and diagnostic profiles. She explains what is known about the benefits of follow-up visits and testing. Devoting several chapters to emotional recovery, she offers advice about how to tackle these fears through information and support. Throughout the book are the warm and wise voices of over 40 other women who have been through this same tough journey of tears, fears and triumph.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Post bc treatment must read.......2006-05-30

This wonderful little book hadn't been published when I finished treatment. It would have been so helpful during that post treatment time when I struggled so hard to return to normal - then, eventually, realized that there was no going back - I was different now and needed to find my "new" normal.

1 out of 5 stars very disappointed.......2005-08-19

I received this book yesterday and am returning it today. It seems to simply list fears (in question format) then state that they will be fears and that there is a basis for fear. So, this book will validate that fear exists, even after treatment. However, this book has a very negative focus. Frankly, it was more unsettling- creating fears I didn't have. While I wasn't looking for a book that was "life is just fine now", I don't need any book to stir up fear and a feeling of helplessness. There was also a whole chapter on "troubling words of "cure and "survivor"... this chapter seemed to be more that the author had an ax to grind, apparently judging people who would use these words as part of their own psychological recovery as being polly-anna or misinformed. She even takes a blast at the "pink ribbon" information as too upbeat. Gosh I guess she just wants to make sure that you stay emotionally fragile, but now you can cite reasons to be! Forget it. I don't need more negativity or fear in my life.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for After Breast Cancer.......2005-05-31

The author of this book is a 14-year breast cancer survivor (at the time of publication.) Musa Mayer was a counselor in the Ohio Community Mental Health system, with a specialty in women's issues. The professional background, plus her personal experience, lends itself to specific knowledge to be an advocate for those facing breast cancer and its after effects. The author suspects that society encourages women to get on with their lives like before cancer, when in fact that is a faulty expectation. There is no going back to life as it was before cancer, because cancer shifts the foundation on which patients stand. Instead, survivors must build supports for a strong life after cancer. Mayer tells readers how to do that, and why it is necessary for post-cancer well-being.

Mayer incorporates the experiences of 40 other women. The women share their thoughts and feelings about what happens after surgery and other cancer treatments are over. The book clearly addresses the concerns of women worrying about recurrence and/or metastatic breast cancer. "This book takes the position that for women diagnosed with breast cancer, coming to terms in a direct way with the fear of recurrence can become a crucial part of the recovery process."

For the two million women in the United States who will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, the recovery process is no easy task. The impact that cancer has on the patient, her family and friends, is profound. Mayer divides the issues of recovery into eight chapters, which include informational and emotional content. What determines a cure? What defines a survivor? What medical tests should a survivor have? What symptoms would a survivor experience? What fears are "normal?" How does a survivor experience a "new normal?" According to Mayer, survivors must "discover what is normal for us now." In addition, Mayer explains the importance of support, and encourages survivors to seek support groups. She also includes an extensive resource guide. For those seeking a holistic approach to life after cancer, the area that is lacking in this book is a chapter on spirituality.

After Breast Cancer is a one-of-a-kind book that should be in of every survivor's library for resources and reassurance.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read after a breast cancer diagnosis.......2003-06-18

I purchased, After Breast Cancer: Answers to the Questions You're Afraid to Ask, for a friend of mine who was diagnosed with primary breast cancer two years ago. Before giving my friend the book, I read it, so I would not be suggesting a book that might "scare" her. Having metastatic breast cancer myself, I found myself wishing I would have had such a resource after my initial diagnosis. The book is extremely well-written and addresses all of the key issues of dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis. It's educational and offers the patient a "take-charge" mentality of a breast cancer diganosis. This book is a "must read" for women (and men) who are dealing with or have dealt with breast cancer.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for anyone just finishing treatment.......2003-06-13

Although I had heard from others that finishing treatment can be unexpectedly hard, it still came as a surprise. I have held it together pretty well, I think, through everything that had happened to me (diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer whilst pregnant). But I really did lose the plot a bit for a while, when it had all finished. This book has helped tremendously. It is a MUST for anyone just finishing treatment. Really wonderful

5 out of 5 stars Autobiography and testament to the author's faith in God.......2007-10-08

As someone who is also battling Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC), I was reluctant to read this book when I learned that the author passed away in April 2006 of IBC. However it helped me to see how someone with metastatic breast cancer can live each day fully and with joy, relying on the support of family and friends, along with a complete trust in God.

The book is comprised mainly of e-mail updates that the author sent to her family and friends over the course of 2 years. It is a very detailed and personal account of her journey fighting breast cancer with numerous chemotherapy treatments. At times it was difficult for me to read, knowing that the author passed away at the age of 44, less than one year after completing the book. But as the author would frequently close her e-mails by saying "May I be a blessing to you in each word I write today", I can say that she has been to me.

5 out of 5 stars Miracles in the making!.......2006-03-27

I've purchased a number of copies of this GREAT book! I'm donating copies and putting them in the waiting rooms at doctor's offices!
This book is not just for those with cancer, but for anyone that may be experiencing one of life's trials! It proves that, by focusing on something Other than the trial, we are more than conquerors!
Writing a book is difficult enough, but to do so while battling for her life....wow! Terri and her family are being used as a Light, showing many that there truly is HOPE!

5 out of 5 stars Personal and Real; Has a Decidedly Positive Spin.......2006-03-16

This book is remarkable because it is so incredibly personal. Terri tells the true story of her life and specifically her experiences while battling breast cancer. It is obvious when reading the book that Terri is a REAL person. She sheds the walls of privacy in hope that the telling of her story will help others. Yes, this book has a specific religious tone, as Terri reconciles most everything to her religious beliefs. However, the reader need only make a small jump to make application to their own beliefs, and any reader can understand the benefits of faith, friends, and family when faced with the challenges described in the book. Her positive spirit and determination to help others is an inspiration to a wide audience.

            Book Description

The concomitance of cancer and pregnancy is a biological paradox and one of the greatest challenges in the lives of young patients, their partners, and their families. It is also a challenge to oncologists, because the management of the pregnant cancer patient involves both mother and fetus. Ideally, oncologists, reproductive endocrinologists, obstetricians and neonatologists, nurses, and psychologists work within a dedicated multidisciplinary team to deliver optimal cancer therapy to the mother, while assuring fetal well-being.

This book, written by oncology experts with knowledge and clinical expertise on diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of women with different types of cancer during pregnancy, provides a comprehensive review of existing data on cancer during pregnancy and a general overview of its psychological, ethical, and social aspects. Chapters address the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of young women with specific solid or hematologic cancers during pregnancy. The safety of subsequent pregnancy after cancer treatments and the alternatives to maintain or enhance fertility in women undergoing cancer therapy are also addressed. While not intended as a practical guideline, the book contains clinical suggestions, bibliography, and references to available online sources about referral centers, ongoing clinical trials, and tumor registries to help oncologists in the clinic.
