Customer Reviews:
Great source for Children's Literature !!.......2007-05-19
I highly recommend this book for Children's Literature. Extremely well organized by genres and well written. I found it very interesting and informative, but, I love childrens' literature. My only criticism of the book is regardingthe copyright of 1995. As a result, there have been many great children's books printed since 1995 that were not covered in this book. Nevertheless, I found this book to be a source of great information and one that I will continue to use.
Through the eyes of child.......2006-11-06
This was required reading for my class. I like the web site that goes with the book. It has sample tests.
Hard To Read Wealth of Children's Litature Course.......2005-11-04
If you plan to teach a children's literature course, then this book possesses nearly all of the information, history, and important milestones that you need...if you can get by the stilted language.
It reads well for someone like me who studies/collects children's literature as a personal hobby; however, for the average reader? Get ready for a painful struggle.
I would suggest using it in conjunction with two other books: Jacob & Tunnell's more classroom-focused CHILDREN'S LITERATURE, BRIEFLY and Rebecca Luken's more historcal/applicable balanced CRITICAL HANDBOOK OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.
Reads like telephone book!.......2005-11-01
This is by far the most boring text book I have ever read. I can't stomach it. It reads like one long boring bibliography. There are so many lists of children's books and their authors that any meaningful information gets lost. The authors of this book overload you with too much information and research that they are obviously very proud of but which puts a strain on your mind. I wanted to learn about the history of children's literature but I just couldn't get past the many, many, many list of children's books that litter the text. I just think that the lists should have been at the end of each chapter for those want to know that stuff. For those who just want the facts, like me, the book is useless. But that's my opinion.
Thanks!.......2005-10-14
Book I great. Learned a lot from it for my literacy class. I was a little steep on the money side, but a good investment.

Book Description
On John's visits to Grandpa's house, his blind grandfather shares with him the special way he sees and moves in the world.
Customer Reviews:
A Different Vision.......2007-01-15
John is a young boy who loves his grandparents dearly. His grandfather cannot see, yet he shows John how he compensates. He likes to whittle and play the banjo and shares these gifts with his grandchild. Man and boy love nature walks, and it is John's grandfather who can recognize the sound of any bird. He teaches John about nature and John forgets that his grandfather cannot see.
His grandmother shows him how they serve meals; she tells the boy's grandfather where each dish is by using a clock face as a guide, e.g. "the peas are at 4:00 on your plate, the steak is at 7:00, etc."
This is a beautiful, loving and very moving story about grandparental bonds and different ways of learning and sharing.
Thoughtful story.......2005-07-29
Wanted to get this for my grandson as my husband and I have vision problems. Great book.
Well-written, realistic story.......2002-11-06
This is a very nicely written story about a boy and his grandfather, who is blind. It portrays a close, loving relationship between the two, and explains in a very simple and positive way how the grandfather perceives the world without his visual sense. The accompanying drawings are simple and artistic. It is so difficult to find realistic, beautiful books for children, but this one is absolutely wonderful. I give it my highest recommendation.
A real lesson to be learned.......2000-04-04
This wonderful book about relying on your senses when you are blind demonstrates that blind people can lead a productive life. Grandpa shares his zest for life with his grandson, John. At first John does not understand how his grandpa is able to do all that he does. Grandpa shares his secret. As a preservice teacher I've used this book to talk about aging and its effects with my students. We also talk about what we can do to help others who have disabilities. This is an excellent book to allow children to examine their thoughts on older people and disabilities.

Surrounded by federal marshals, 6-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first black student ever at the all-white William Frantz Public School in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 14, 1960. Perhaps never had so much hatred been directed at so perfect a symbol of innocence--which makes it all the more remarkable that her memoir, simple in language and rich in history and sepia-toned photographs, is informed mainly by a sort of bewildered compassion. Throughout, readers will find quotes from newspapers of the time, family members, and teachers; sidebars illustrating how Ruby Bridges pops up in both John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley and a Norman Rockwell painting; and a fascinating update on Bridges's life and civil rights work. A personal, deeply moving historical documentary about a staggeringly courageous little girl at the center of events that already seem unbelievable. (Ages 6 and older) --Richard Farr
Book Description
In November 1960, all of America watched as a tiny six-year-old black girl, surrounded by federal Marshall's, walked through a mob of screaming segregationists and into her school. An icon of the civil rights movement, Ruby Bridges chronicles each dramatic step of this pivotal event in history.

Ruby Bridges review by Sophie K........2006-07-19
I chose this book from my summer reading list because I have a special interest in the Civil Rights Movement. I learned about Ruby Bridges during African American Month at school and got really interested in her story. I liked this book a lot because it taught me about integration and segration in a way that was easy to understand. The photographs brought the story to life, and I liked the way the story was told from Ruby's point of view. I would really recommend this book to kids my age (third grade) and older who are interested in this kind of book. My parents really liked the book too!
Sophie K.
A Historical Must Read.......2006-04-04
This inspirational story, told by Ruby Bridges herself, can help children understand some of the struggles of African-Americans during the 1960's. Ruby's courageousness and determination is the message young readers are presented with. The real-life photos give readers a visual account of the hard times that Ruby and other African-Americans endured. Also included in this autobiography are quotes from many of the people that Ruby encountered in her life including her mother, her first grade teacher, Barbara Henry, and her childhood psychologist, Robert Cole. A quote from a 1963 speech by Martin Luther King is included which further supports the civil rights theme in this book. Excerpts from text such as The New York Times and Good Housekeeping gives readers even more factual information about the time period. The book includes photo credits as well as text credits with copyrights to ensure the reliability. This text can be used with children in grades five through eight studying the civil rights movement or school integration in the 1960's.
Moving and full of information.......2006-03-24
I really loved this book, it has a lot of pics and information about the time everything happened. This girl is such an example for everyone...
In her own words.......2006-02-22
This is an insprational story about a brave little girl told from historical accounts and through her memories years later. There are many moving photographs along with the touching story of her experiences as the only black student integrating an all white school.
Moved me to tears.......2006-01-26
This is a wonderful accessible book for people of all ages. The story of Ruby Bridges, what she endured, the people who stood by her, moved me to tears when I read about them. It is a powerful, poignant story.

EMDR: The Breakthrough "Eye Movement" Therapy for Overcoming Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma
ASIN: 0393702871 |
Book Description
The first book to explore the use of this revolutionary new therapy with children and adolescents. EMDR has helped thousands of adults haunted by traumatic events. But what about children? This comprehensive book demystifies eye movement desensitization reprocessing with children, from the first session with the parents to later sessions with children at all developmental stages. Myriad cases illustrate the use of EMDR with various traumas, symptoms, and diagnoses. With its compelling, frank style, this book will appeal to all who are curious about this exciting new therapy.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Resource for Helping Children.......2007-05-17
Children are different and any clinician who works with children in trauma will want to encorporate the tools and techniques in this book, written by giants in EMDR treatment in designing treatment planning. Used in conjunction with the standard protocols, and proper training, the treatment modifications suggested in this work will enhance the competency of clinicians who work with children in distress.
An enormously important book........1999-08-02
Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Chronic neglect. Domestic violence. Auto accidents. School shootings. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of ways for children to be traumatized. Just as unfortunately, research into children's trauma and the development of treatment methods often lag behaind adult counterparts. Filling a major gap in the eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) literature, veteran therapists Robert Tinker and Sandra Wilson are making available, in compellingly readable form, the techniques they have used successfully with children from Oklahoma City to Rwanda. Geared equally to the child clinician interested in adding this powerful modality and to the experienced EMDR practtioner, "Through the Eyes of a Child" cuts through the mystery to illuminate the method. "It's like you took a magic wand, and said 'Bing! You can live now!" --The mother of a six-year-old who had been severely sexually abused when she was 18 months old. Clinical examples and session transcripts demonstrate EMDR at work with children and teenagers who have experienced a range of acute and ongoing traumas, from molestation by a sibling to the suicide of a parent, from near-death in a lightning storm to the emotional upheaval of a bitter custody battle. (Additional cases show its efficacy in dealing with problems that may not necessarily be trauma-related, among them ADHD, simple phobias, attachment disorder, and learning disabilities.) Tinker and Wilson make important comparisons between pediatric and adult applications of the method at the diagnostic and assessment levels, and modify the treatment protocol to fit youngsters at various stages of development. The standard eye movements, for example, are inappropriate for most children under age five, but they respond well to other forms of left-right stimulation. To keep therapeutic goals clearly in sight, direct, concerte language is usually preferable to the metaphoric language commonly accompanying desensitization. The authors are acutely aware of some EMDR therapists' reservations about working with children, and they have included plenty of guidelines so that readers can accuaratly guage young clients' reactions, minimize the possibility of dissociation, and--most importantly--avoid retraumatization. (One rule that can't be overemphasized: establish a "safe place" that can be returned to when necessary.) Clinical and legal caveats, suggestions for combining EMDR with other forms of therapy, and ideas for involving parents are included as well. With clients this young, significant results often come at an accelerated pace. This can be surprising to clinicians used to conducting adult-length sessions, but as one seven-year-old described the effect of EMDR on his nightmares, "[They] just cleared out of my brain."
I will unreservedly recommend the book to all........1999-03-21
Despite the child focus, I believe this book is essential reading for all who either use or intend to use EMDR, especially with children. Due to the inevitable developmental influence of much of adult trauma it is an important reference text for all to consider. Any criticism is perhaps only because the general standard is so high that one expects this work to be the fountain of all knowledge when in essence it is a brilliant text about EMDR with children containing a wealth of knowledge. The book is blended like a fine, smooth malt whisky. It has a unique combination of evidence based fact, neurobiological overview, exellent clinical case description, instruction and anecdote based on many years of skilled experience with a rare style that makes it extremely palatable, with continued satisfaction when you resample it. The hallmarks of true expertise were met by the authors' conversion of complexity to simplicity with minimal loss of data. Tinker & Wilson are a rare hybrid of 'gifted researcher and compassionate, effective clinician' who have given generously of their time to fellow professionals and patients. I will unreservedly recommend the book to all.
Book Description
Told in her own voice, 10-year-old Emily explains her feelings and her search for answers about why her brother Daniel did the things he did. Not only uplifting, Austism Through A Sister's Eyes offers valuable information and illustrations which make it an exceptional book for both brothers and sisters of autistic siblings.
Customer Reviews:
simple way to speak to children about autism.......2007-03-23
This is a nice book to use to explain to "typical" kids what is my son's situation. It has examples that speaks to their age. Even without sitting there and reading the actual books to kids, I use the ideas to speak to friends' kids and others.
Very good.
Great Book For Younger Children.......2006-03-17
I loved reading this book with my nine-year-old. She really got a better insight into her sisters behavior. It gave us a starting point for discussion.
a sister's response.......2005-06-03
I am 10 and I have a 12 year old sister who has Aspergers Syndrome. My mom and dad have been trying to help me understand it for years. My sister always seems to get away with a lot of stuff and she embarrasses me a lot. I like this book because it really explains how I feel. I get annoyed just like Emily and then I feel guilty because my sister has autism and can't help what she is doing. This book let me know that it is OK to get annoyed and for some reason that makes me less annoyed with my sister. I don't know why but it does. Emily says that she feels like the big sister and that is exactly how I feel! I don't like worrying about my sister so I don't like it when we do the same activities. This made my mom understand a little better too. I really recommend this book because it is really true. I haven't really liked any of the other books my mom got me on autism because they weren't really about how I felt but this one is great.
Strong Bonds.......2004-12-17
This is a sterling work that I highly endorse. This is an invaluable work for people who have siblings with autism; for families; for educators and other interested persons.
Emily's older brother Daniel has autism. She naturally wants to know why she cannot communicate with him consistently and what prompts him to behave and respond as he does. Emily's parents acknowledge Emily's anger, concern and other feelings and allow her to explore. I like the conversations they had. I also like the way Daniel is accepted and how some of his more outlandish behavior is explained and not condoned. Reasonable expectations are set for Daniel, always with the hope of contant, continued improvement.
The dynamics among this family are what makes this book so strong. It is a book that will resonate in one's mind long after finishing the last page.
Highly recommended.......2001-07-19
"I really liked the way this book presents information about autism and Aspergers in such a clear way for children. Kids will find it easy to read and relate to Emily's story and actual experiences. It's a real treasure for kids who have a brother or sister with high-functioning autism or Aspergers, and a heart-warming read for their parents, too."
Customer Reviews:
A must to read........2007-01-12
One of the most interesting book in the field of vision, behavior, posture and
much more.
Thousand thanks to Dr M.KAPLAN.
See to Learn, See to Work, See to Play .......2006-02-20
Seeing Through New Eyes is an introduction to the treatment of visual conditions that go beyond 20/20 eyesight. Developmental or behavioral vision care can have a significant impact on behavioral, social and learning problems associated with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Poor eye contact and other behaviors are often the result of difficulty with "ambient vision" that drives spatial awareness, visual organization and balance/coordination. Dr. Kaplan gives guidance on how to identify the visual deficits of nonverbal children, select performance lenses that will alter ambient vision and how to create individual vision management programs in order to assist each individual in achieving maximum success in life. This book is essential reading for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and professionals in the fields of autism, optometry, ophthalmology, psychology and education.
Book Description
Little Rainman is written from the perspective of Jonathan a child diagnosed with autism. The script is written in a child's print and, according to Temple Grandin, the drawings which illustrate the story capture "how a child with autism (really) thinks." Jonathan talks about how he felt as a baby ("I did not like to be touched or held, even by my parents"), how he loved to play "circles in the air" (a game where he would extend one leg in the air and create circles), and his view of colors, wallpaper, people's facial expressions, friendships and other important things. Simply told, Little Rainman tells the reader what it's like to be autistic.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2004-12-17
I was thoroughly disappointed in this book and plain didn't like it. The handwritten font was the least of my objections regarding this work. It is easy to see where and how the pictures could cause some confusion. One of the challenges many people on the autism spectrum have is being able to decode facial expressions.
My chief complaint about this book is the title. I think the 1988 movie "Rain Man" has done more to reinforce stereotypes about autism than it ever did to foster understanding. The term "Rain Man" is considered highly offensive in many autism/Asperger's circles and is best avoided.
I am good and tired of people with autism being portrayed as rocking; staring fixedly at something; spinning objects or watching anything that rotates; demonstrating savant abilities and having no viable social skills. That stereotypical behavior simply does not apply to the entire autistic population. Savantism applies to roughly a little less than 10% of the autistic population. Autism is a neurobiological condition that affects sensory processing and communication. The range and variations are as great as there are individuals with autism. Seriously, I rue the release of the movie "Rain Man" and sincerely hope the term and image of "Rain Man" will not be so liberally applied to people with autism. That hurts all and helps no one.
I didn't think this one was helpful at all and would recommend "Autism Through a Sister's Eyes," "All About My Brother," "Views From Our Shoes: Growing Up With a Brother or Sister With Special Needs," "Ian's Walk" and "My Brother Kevin Has Autism" instead. These are excellent books that explore sibling issues and foster understanding and acceptance of autism.
If this book helped others understand the underlying rationale for behaviors associated with the condition and provided understanding, that is to the good.
A Waste of Time.......2004-05-12
This could have been much better. I admire parents who use their experiences to write stories to help us learn about children with disabilities. However, in this case it seems like it was only done to make a buck. More thought should go into a book than what appears to have happened here.
A mixed review.......1999-07-27
I applaud the author for her attempts at telling a story through the eyes and words of her son. The concept is correct, the method is not. The story rambles, often jumping from topic to topic. The "handwritten" font is creative, but actually hard to read. It could have been so much more effective to have this book written by someone with more legible printing. The photos are at times compelling, but others are too obscure for children to interpret. I bought this book for my seven-year-old son, to help him understand my four-year-old autistic son. There were some helpful thoughts, but this book seemed to create more confusion and questions for him.
Wonderful for relatives of autistic children.......1999-03-10
This is a terrific book! It helped my in-laws understand my son better. They had thought autism was as it is in TV movies - silent, non-responsive, unreachable children. Their grandson certainly wasn't like that, he got good grades, so he wasn't autistic. Now they realize that when I say my son is autistic I'm not insulting his intelligence, but refering to the way his mind works.
HAVING AN AUTISTIC CHILD, THIS BOOK IS EXTREMELY SOBERING........1998-12-29
WE HAVE AN AUTISTIC 9 YEAR OLD CHILD, DIAGNOSED AT AGE 3. TO DATE, WE HAVE YET BEEN ABLE TO FIND A BOOK THAT IS NOT OVER-ANALYTICAL, NOT TO MENTION WAY OVER OUR HEADS CONCERNING HOW TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE EVERYDAY REASONING AND ACTIONS OF OUR SON. AFTER READING THIS BOOK, I HAVE IMMEDIATELY GROWN CLOSER AND MORE APPRECIATIVE OF MY CHILD AND HIS DISABILITY. I HAVE FOUND MYSELF, SINCE READING THE BOOK, NOT GETTING SO EASILY UPSET WITH HIM. THERE ARE "AUTISTIC" THINGS HE DOES THAT UPSET ME SINCE I KNOW THEY ARE THE BY-PRODUCTS OF HIS CONDITION BUT AFTER READING THE BOOK, I BETTER UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS SOMETHING INSIDE HIM THAT IS CAUSING THIS, NOT HIM TRYING TO HURT OR IRRITATE US WITH CERTIAN ACTIVITIES, EVEN DOWN TO HOW HE RESPONDS TO HIS ENVIRONMENT AND OTHERS. OF COURSE I HAVE AM AWARE OF ALL THE "SYMPTOMS" AND I AM LIVING THEM, BUT THIS BOOK IS SO REAL AND INTIMATE IN ITS DEPICTION OF AN AUTISTIC CHILD'S MIND THAT EVERY PARENT OF AN AUTISTIC CHILD (NO MATTER HOW MILD) AS WELL AS THOSE CLOSE TO THEM, MUST READ THIS BOOK! CONGRATULATIONS KAREN FOR A SHINING ACHIEVEMENT! WHAT A REWARD YOU WILL RECEIVE FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND WILLINGNESS TO HELP OTHERS UNDERSTAND.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for teachers.......2007-09-30
Weakfish is an enlightening story about a boy who has been bullied througout his school career. The author provides insight into why the bullying occurred and provides excellent information and resources to help teachers, administrators and parents prevent bullying in their own communities. A must read.
This is a wonderful book!.......2007-05-17
This is a wonderful book. I have read it myself and I have used it to teach a unit on bullying to a high school class.
An Excellent Message.......2006-09-02
Today I heard Michael Dorn speak as part of our "beginning of the year" inservice. I am a second grade teacher and was profoundly affected by Michael's message. He has helped me remember the powerful influence and presence I have in my students' lives. As a parent, his message has helped me question and be very connected in my own kids' lives and education. He is an excellent speaker and writer. I highly recommend this book to all people who influence children in any way. It is an eye-opener and a wonderful reminder of how precious and beautiful our children are.
A "Must-Read" for Teachers, Parents, etc!.......2005-03-27
I have not yet read the book, (working on that!) but I have met Mr. Dorn in person after hearing a lecture he gave to my school. His lecture and books are a must for all involved in educating students today! He explains adults what to look for when finding those students "slipping through the cracks."

A copy of Through Indian Eyes should be in every elementary, middle and high school library, as well as every public library across the United States, Canada, and other countries where children read books about the indigenous people of the Americas. It is unsurpassed in its presentation of critical analysis of the ways in which Native Americans are represented in children's books. The book includes insightful essays by well known authors (Michael Dorris), as well as critical reviews of popular children's books that distort and/or misrepresent Native culture.
