5 out of 5 stars Useful and Informative.......2007-07-25

I have read this book cover to cover and found it useful and informative. I went through thyroid surgery and it was comforting to read that what I felt and experienced was a normal part of the process and recovery. The book gives enough detail to keep you informed without going into indepth medical detail. It was easy to read and I would highly recommend it to patients and their families.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Anyone Facing Thyroid Cancer.......2006-03-26

I found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding all aspects of thyroid cancer. It is well organized and very reader friendly, especially for those of us without a medical background. The best part is that you can use it as a reference guide during all stages of this disease: pre-surgery, during treatment and follow-up.

5 out of 5 stars A Must -have for those in need to know, highly recommended.......2006-02-08

If you were confused by the bombardment of info your endo piled onto you upon your diagnosis, this is the book to sort things out and--most importantly--take the fear of the unkown away.

Information is key, and information in an easily read and understood format is what you get with this book. You don't need to sit down and read it cover to cover, in fact, the book does not recommend that you do that, but it's there to answer specific questions you will have, not just now, but at any time in the years to come.

Someone commented that the book does not addess the fears and concerns of family members. I think it does, since the fears of the patient aren't all that different from those of close family members. At least that has been my experience from now both sides of the fence. And the book lists contact info for support groups both online and in major cities across the country.

If you're reading this review, clearly you're not someone who sticks his or her head in the sand, and that tells me that you will greatly benefit from this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Reference.......2006-01-03

My wife recently was diagnosed with follicular neoplasm and will be having her surgery on 1/10/2006. I hastily ordered a number of books to get educated, and this is the best I've read.

It contains not only medical/technical treatments of the subject by various experts, but it also contains the experiences of thyroid cancer patients/survivors, which helps me as a caretaker to anticipate potential emotional challenges both my wife & myself will be facing.

I would have given a 5 star rating if pictures/illustrations were provided.

5 out of 5 stars Throid Cancer: A Guide for Patients.......2005-08-03

This is a great book for anyone going through Thyroid Cancer surgery and treatments. I bought 3 books, one for myself and one each for my parents. My family had a lot of question about the cancer and treatment. When you're post-op and hypothyroid it's difficult to explain over and over what is happening to you. My mother found that the book was very easy for her to understand and it answered her questions regarding the cancer and treatments. I found that it was very useful while going through the surgeries and treatments as a reference book. The book answered a lot of my questions. I learned about the book through the Thyroid Cancer Survivors' website www.ThyCa.org. Using both the book and the website helped me get through it all.

5 out of 5 stars Graves Disease: A Practical Guide, by E. Moore.......2007-05-16

This book is fantastic. It is not a watered down, pandering talk about the subject, but it is a good source of knowledge. I wish my endocrinologist knew this much about the topic of Graves Disease. It is a bit advanced in some places, but many terms are defined and the author assumes that the reader is motivated, but not a medical student. You will probably have to spend some time memorizing terms and looking up some information for complete understanding, but it is all here.

The author also discribes current, past, and also nontraditional treatments and solutions to Graves Disease. There are good chapters and paragraphs that introduce information in a simple and practical way, but there are also chapters with all the details and confusing terminology that will frustrate some readers. I believe that no matter what your level of medical understanding, you will get something of value out of this book. It has definitely given me confidence and hope, especially since I do not trust the doctors who say it is easiest to simply irradiate the thyroid and take a pill a day for the rest of your life... I don't think anything is THAT EASY... This book discusses other options. Check it out-- you owe it to your thyroid. Scotty/Sioux City

Excellent information. Extremely technical. Not easy to read and understand for the lay person.

2 out of 5 stars Need a translator.......2004-11-11

I am disappointed in this book mainly because it is so technical and hard to read. The reviews made it sound like it was easy to read, that is one of the reasons I bought it. But, even with a bachelors of science degree, I am having a very hard time getting much out of it. Being thorough is one thing, but it reads like a medical text book with no explanations. If you are in medical school or a practicing physician, you may be able to understand this, but sadly for me, it is way over my head.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Graves' patients.......2004-11-09

As a fellow author of books on thyroid disease, I'm impressed with the breadth and depth of this book. Elaine raises interesting questions about Graves' treatments, and this book has helped to shape more debate and analysis about treatment options. An excellent companion book to this title is another book for Graves' patients by Elaine Moore: Thyroid Eye Disease: Understanding Graves' Ophthalmopathy, available on Amazon, too! I'm delighted that it's now possible for Graves' patients to have a more complete home library through Elaine's work.

It has now been a year since my initial diagnosis of hypothryoidism and Hashimoto's Thryoiditis in July 2006. In my intial year, I have read many articles and research on thryoid disease, but most did not answer all my questions. I recently came across this book during my initial appointment with Dr. Friedman in July 2007. This book not only answered my questions, but it answered other items I did not know. This book has a lot information, but it is basic enough for all levels to understand. I highly recommend this book for those with thryoid problems and/or family and/or friends with thryoid problems.

For anyone with a thyroid problem, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! I wish it could have been published years earlier when I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Dr. Friedman and Winnie Yu have put together information that is easy to read and understand. As the title implies, they have included everything you will need to know. The more information and knowledge you accumulate about any condition you have, the better able you will be to get proper treatment. I thought "life" was really slowing me down, but it was really my thyroid!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, practical, and easy-to-understand guide to thyroid disorders.......2007-05-07

This is an excellent layperson's guide to thyroid disorders. It is written in a technically accurate yet easy-to-follow style. The book combines explanations of the known thyroid disorders together with practical advice on diagnosis and treatment for patients.

As well as discussing current medical knowledge of thyroid dysfunction in a succinct yet comprehensive manner, this book also touches on issues yet to be fully resolved. For example -- the reference range for TSH, the controversy over treating subclinical hypothyroidism, the use of pig gland extracts of thyroid hormone (Armour) versus synthetic T4, and the possibility that prophylactic T4 therapy or selenium supplementation may be useful for patients with autoimmune thyroiditis.

Overall, this guide is highly recommended for those who have -- or suspect they have -- a thyroid disorder.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than just thyroid.......2007-04-14

Dr. Friedman's latest book (The Everything Health Guide to Thyroid Disease: Professional Advice on Getting the Right Diagnosis, Managing Your Symptoms, And Feeling Great) is much more than just about the thyroid. He explains how the thyroid is affected by other parts of the body, especially the endocrine system. He talks about the management of the thyroid hormones and how other hormones can influence each of these. He shows the reader the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, and how each of these three influences the other. Not only is the book comprehensive, it is well written, well organized, and easy to understand.

Dr. Friedman and Ms.Yu bring to the reader the latest research, reasons why our hormones can get out of kilter, and ideas to take to one's own physician for better, informed medical care.

My doctor recommended this book to me when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer recently. It's been a godsend! It explained things to me in terms that are easy to read and understand. I really appreciated that it was written by someone who's also been through thyroid cancer. I felt like a friend was helping me through the process of my treatment. I also really trust the information in it because the medical advisor for this book, Dr. Ain, is a name I recognize, who gives out amazing advice on the thyroid cancer Yahoo listserve.

I was diagnosed with thryoid cancer 3 years ago. I wish I'd had this book then! Rosenthal explains everything so clearly! I feel so empowered with this book. It covers everything you need to know about your cancer and especially all about follow-up scans. I found this chapter the most useful for me because it's a very confusing subject. This book answered all my questions and concerns about withdrawl scanning. Everyone with thryoid cancer should have this book. I have her other thyroid books, and they're all really well-written and informative, but if you have thyroid cancer, you need this book especially.

Thyroid diseases are extremely common--but they often go undetected because symptoms are subtle and develop slowly, diagnosis can be tricky, and thyroid diseases can mimic so many other disorders (after all, sudden weight changes, fatigue, nervousness, and sleeplessness are symptoms associated with dozens of other health disorders, including psychological problems such as depression).

This empathetic reference from two leading members of The Thyroid Center--a multidisciplinary group of doctors at The Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City who have treated thousands of thyroid patients--gives you all the facts you need to understand this important gland and its functions, recognize trouble signs, and get proper treatment. The book is especially reader-friendly because many sections are written in a question-and-answer style and it's sprinkled with case studies about real-life people who have thyroid disease but went undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

The book starts off with a chapter on how to find a good thyroid doctor--usually an internist, family practitioner, or endocrinologist with expertise in this area--with whom you'll feel comfortable over the long term (since thyroid disorders tend to need lifelong surveillance and treatment). It then covers the various types of thyroid disease: the underactive and overactive thyroid gland, thyroid nodules (usually benign lumps), cancer, and thyroid disorders common to children, and those that appear during and after pregnancy. The authors also describe tests used to diagnose thyroid disease and the latest surgical, pharmacological, and nutritional techniques for treating it. --Nancy Monson

5 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent layperson's manual.......2000-06-13

What I liked most about this book is that you don't have to be a surgeon to get value from it. For myself, I knew nothing about thyroid disease, other than to say that a very good friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with a kind of hyperthyroidism. I purchased The Thyroid Guide through Amazon.com because I was hoping to learn more about my friend's disease and maybe pass it on to her to provide her with some peace of mind. I am glad I purchased this book. The Thyroid Guide is an excellent source of information about all types of diseases affecting the thyroid. And, the information is presented in an easily accessible, unintimidating, readable way. Ditkoff and LoGerfo understand that it's not surgeons who need to read this book. So they have taken great pains to keep the technical stuff to a minimum. They have focussed on symptoms, choosing physicians, procedures, medications - the kind of information the layperson should know.

2 out of 5 stars Just about the Surgery.......2000-04-23

I was surprised when I got the book, because the listing says that thebook is 272 pages but it's really more like 170 pages, and doesn'thave much useful detail. The authors are apparently thyroid surgeons, and so they spend most of the book talking about thyroid surgery, and the conditions that can lead to thryroid surgery like hyperthyroidism, thyroid lumps and thyroid cancer. As someone who is hypothyroid, I was looking for more information than book's statement that "an underactive thyroid is easy to treat." They say this several times in the book, and the fact that they keep repeating this when it sure hasn't been true for me makes me think that they don't have a particular handle on what is involved in being hypothyroid after the surgery. Also, the cover talks about nutrition and self-care, but the nutrition chapter is only about 3 pages, and all it really talks about is iodine. These doctors also must not believe in alternative medicine because their section on it is 3 sentences that say that it doesn't really help anything, except maybe things like "insomnia or nervousness." This book might be good for someone who was going to have thyroid surgery, but this book didn't have much to offer for me, since I've had the surgery already, and am now dealing with being hypothyroid.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Guide to Thyroid.......2000-04-05

As an idividual familiar with the field, I think The Thyroid Guide is a must read for anyone faced with thyroid disease or thyroid surgery. Many people are hesitant to confront health issues that may be related to the thyroid, but this guide walks you through the steps from diagnosis to treatment. It contains all the questions a patient should ask his/her physician. It explores the different techniques used in dealing with thyroid surgery in an unbiased manner.

I feel that these two surgeons have dealt with all the issues facing patients dealing with thyroid cancer, disease, and surgery fully in writing this book.

1 out of 5 stars Do not waste money in buying this book!!!!.......2007-04-04

I was very disappointed after buying this book. Not to mention this book cost me nearly 200 U. S. dollars. Anyway, money is not the matter. If after reading this book it really helps me to manage Thyroid Cancer patient better, even two thousand dollars are worth of that. The problem is that the title is totally mis-leading. Howe can it be called a comprehensive textbook on treating Thyroid Cancer?? For a comprehensive book, like DeVita's Cancer, princple and practice of oncology, Harrison's textbook on Internal Medicine, or Henry Kaplan's Hodgkin's Lymphoma these are the true all time classics or what we call " bible " on these subjects. Concerning this book, I think a chapter on thyroid cancer from any standard textbook of cancer covers as much, if not more than it. Just take one example, it did not mention a single word on how to treat patient with recurrence in neck node or at least give us a guidline for that. All other related topics are very briefly given and some are not touched at all. I hope Mazzaferri's textbook or other larger textbook on thyroid cancer can actully do the job it should be. A real " comprehensive "textbook for reference for the managment of CA Thyroid.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive yet understandable.......2004-09-25

This is an incredibly helpful book that can be read cover to cover or used from time to time as a reference. It is written in "regular" language without compromising the information and without being too pedantic or condescending. The book remains technical where necessary. The addition of people's stories personalizes each topic and provides a point of reference for comparing your own symptoms. Pictures of celebreties who have experienced problems with their thyroid gives you a sense of "belonging" and let's you know that you aren't the only one with this problem, which can be very comforting. Finally, all proceeds of the sale of the book are donated to the American Thyroid Association for research & education.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Reference Book.......2004-09-12

This book is well-written. It is simple to understand, yet packed with useful information. I refer to this book whenever I have a question regarding my thyroid health. My endocrinologist refers to this book as well. I give this book to woman with health questions, so that they may consider their next medical option.

4 out of 5 stars It could be my thyroid!!.......2004-02-18

I was given the double opportunity to read the book and meet the author. I met Dr. Rubenfeld at a Houston conference. He took the time to write a book that can answer many questions. It is written in such a way that you do not need a medical degree or background to understand it. The narrative is laced with illustrations and celebrity "thyroid newsmakers" stories. A comprehensive glossary is provided for those medical terms lay people may not understand. Patient profiles bring a personal touch from those who have lived it.

    4 out of 5 stars now I understand.......2004-01-15

When I thought that something was wrong with my thyroid, I checked every medical site I could find. Some sites were clearer than others and some were more comprehensive than others. I started asking friends if they knew of anyone with thyroid problems, and almost everyone I spoke to in Houston mentioned Dr. Rubenfeld. A friend gave me his book and I realized that it was clearer and more comprehensive than any of the sites I reviewed. It also lists stories of people after each chapter that really brought home the information. Because each person will experience diffent symptoms, it was easy for me to identify with each person's story and how they approached their treatment. It was easy to read (layman terms!) and I could read the chapters that pertained to me. I would recommend it for someone who does their homework.

5 out of 5 stars Best answer to all my questions--comprehensive.......2004-01-05

If you have a thyroid problem or even suspect you have one, this easy-to-understand book by a leading MD tells you just what you need to know. It is a wonderful resource, packed with useful information. I got it as a gift -- and it is priceless. What a welcome and very necessary addition to my bookself. I am giving a copy to my doctor.

Probably a very good resource for individuals beginning their research in thyroid problems, a trustworthy source, but this book provided no new information and did not address the problem of continued fatigue, immune deficiency, etc. that comes along with hypothyroid despite the fact that numbers are okay.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative and easy to understand.......2005-05-27

I found this book really informative and easy to read. I usually don't write reviews but had to take exception to a previous reviewer comment. The book does say that the disease can be easily diagnosed and then goes on to say many people are not diagnosed. This is just the point, if it's easy why are they not getting diagnosed? The book goes on to say that in many cases it's because the tests are simply not run and that it is often due to the cost involved. I happen to be particularly sensitive to this point and I couldn't agree more.

If you don't have a lot of background on this topic or are not in the medical profession than I would suggest this book. It is written in plain speak and is very informative.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Rehash of the Same Old Info.......2005-05-25

Coming from Harvard, I was hoping for much more, but I found this book a disappointment.

Here's a direct quote from the introduction to the book.

"Thyroid diseases are easily diagnosed with a simple blood test and easily treated."

Just this statement alone was enough to tell me that this book is not dealing in the reality of thyroid disease. There are more than 20 million people with thyroid disease (not the 12 million the author quotes) and half of them are undiagnosed. If it's so easily diagnosed and treated, this would not be the case.

If you want more than "easy to diagnose, easy to treat" -- and let's face it, patients deserve more than that -- you're better off with any of the books by the Shameses, Mary Shomon, Elaine Moore, or Ridha Arem.

        Book Description

More than 20 million Americans have thyroid disease, most of them women. In fact, 2 percent of all women will suffer from thyroid disorder at some point in their lives. The thyroid is important because it produces two hormones that help regulate metabolism and control the speed of all cellular activity in the body. So what happens when this small, butterfly-shaped gland malfunctions, and how can it suddenly seem to turn against us? Many people don't even realize when it happens. Often a "silent" problem, thyroid disease affects an estimated 2 million people who are undiagnosed. This guide gives thyroid disorder patients what they need most: substantive information from an authoritative source that is trusted by people over the world. It outlines what anyone must do to reduce their risk of thyroid disorders; for those who have been diagnosed, it outlines successful treatments.
