Honest and valuable.......2007-07-27
There are many great resources directed at families and now, more than ever, there are many choices for those on the spectrum. In this book, we have a bit of both-- this resource is appropriate for many different audiences and allows the reader to learn from many who are connected to life with autism. This is an excellent choice for "introducing" someone to autism but also for those who are well versed but want to expand their understanding.
Lift Every Voice And Shout!.......2007-06-18
We have climbed that mountain and seen the valley...from up high, you get a wonderful panoramic view. I want everybody to join us on this mountain and lift up your voices and shout about autism!
Shout about the challenges of having autism; living with someone who has it or about the reaction that those uninformed about autism express. Shout out a celebration of having autism as well because people with autism make life much more interesting. Shout about the injustices towards those with autism and stupid prejudices about autism such as that tired "R*** M***" (which is a slur in the autism world) cliche. Shout out about what autism means to you personally. Do an autism dance if you need to. Add your voice and be heard!
This is an excellent book. Relatives of people with autism as well as professionals get to add their voices to the chorus about autism and its affect on people at large. Readers get treated to the personal insights of those who contributed to this wonderful book.
This is a book that I feel everybody will benefit from and come away with a larger store of tolerance and acceptance of autism. I like the wide range of voices and experiences that are heard and shared in this book. That makes for a richer chorus. As for adults with Asperger's, make this book a new friend and join in the Mountain Top Chorus!
I've recommended this book many times since reading it.......2007-03-28
Reading Voices from the Spectrum was like talking with friends who knew and loved my son. The Autism spectrum is so varied, but the majority of entries had something I could relate to. While reading I started taking notes, I found new ways to explain my sons' needs, in IEP meetings as well as to friends and relatives. I highlighted supports to implement and ideas for his future. From sibling entries I gained an added appreciation for how my other children might be feeling.
There are many books on the Autism Spectrum with valuable facts and research information, but this is the only one I've found written by people who actually live the facts and research.
A Voice of Wisdom and Understanding.......2006-05-09
In my work as the Editor of a large, international newsletter for parents of individuals on the autism spectrum, I read about 6 books each month on individuals with ASD, their families, new therapies and research. This book is absolutely superb. Dr. Naseef's essay as a parent is one of the most porfound, realistic and positive I've read in my 24 years of service to the autism community and in my 34 years as the parent of a woman with autism. The variety of essays and perspectives sets this book apart from all others.

Having a spouse that has autism.......2006-05-03
In this book I was so pleased to read about other people being married to a person with autism. They talk about how the spouse with autism did many things that they didn't understand but they still stayed in the marriage and I feel that is because being married to a person with autism is being married to a very unique and caring person.I have survived 49 years of life with autism. In this book I read so much that was similar to my own life. I highly praise the people who have helped and got so deeply involved with the children with autism. I unfortunately never had that kind of help when I was a child. All the stories in this book should be read by anyone who wants to understand the beauty of autism.

Book Description
ith the same warmth, sensitivity, and depth that made her books What's Heaven? and What's Wrong with Timmy? so successful, bestselling author Maria Shriver delves into another difficult issue confronting families across the country-Alzheimer's disease, and the onset of memory loss in the aging. Through the inspiring story of young Kate and her grandpa, adults can teach and comfort children trying to understand what's happening to their elderly loved ones. Kate, the same young heroine of the New York Times bestsellers, What's Heaven? and What's Wrong With Timmy?, has always adored her grandpa's storytelling-but lately, he's repeating the same stories and asking the same questions again and again. One day, when he forgets Kate's name, she knows she must find out what's happening to grandpa. Her mother's patient explanations open Kate's eyes to what so many of the elderly must confront. Determined to support her grandfather, she explores ways to help him-and herself-cope with the changes. Together, they create a photo album, and Kate writes down the many stories of her grandpa's incredible life. The memories, and the bond they've forged, will be in their hearts forever. With special insight that derives from her own father's struggle with Alzheimer's, Maria Shriver offers a touching and optimistic story that encourages awareness, acceptance, and dialogue with family and friends. Her characters' positive solutions lead readers to discover something that everyone needs-a ray of hope during troubled times.

A SENSITIVE AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK.......2007-03-05
This is a very sensitive book addressing the horrible problems when a loved one is diagnoses with Alzheimer's Disease. The book is seen through the eyes of a child, a questioning child and the answers provided are quite good. This is a well done work and covers issues which, at times, can be diffiult to address with the young child. I not that this paricular work is probably being down graded somewhat due to the fact that the author is a celebrity, of sorts. I will be the first to state that many of the "celebrity written books" are indeed pure garbage and that just because they look good in front of a camera, does not make them an expert on just about any thing. (Actually, generally speaking, as a group, they are just about the most clueless folks we have in our society). In this case though, Shriver has indeed done her research and does indeed pull it off and the work shoud not be judged on just what the author does for a living. All in all, recommend this one highly.
Thoughtful and very touching.......2005-08-06
Families can struggle with teaching children about aging and illness, especially when it hits so close to home with grandparents. Ms. Shriver has succeeded in putting all the sensitive feelings and thoughts that naturally occur when a loved ones develops Alzheimer's.
Soft watercolor pictures accompany meaningful text to describe families from all backgrounds as they begin the long and sometimes painful journey with seniors as their memories fade, they repeat themselves, can't remember things, and ask the same questions over and over.
Meant for older children, this book is a wonderful starting point to begin discussions of this topic with classes and/or your children at home.
So thorough is the coverage in this book that it even includes a wealth of additional resources in the back pages with websites and 800 #'s for further information on Alzheimer's education and aging.
Another Resource for Alzheimer's Families.......2005-04-29
Maria Shriver's tender story is a gift to the millions of families who are struggling with a family member's diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Shriver does an excellent job of guiding us through that initial shock and showing us ways to cope. I know from experience that the months and years that follow such a diagnosis provide innumerable opportunities for continued struggle and growth. For this reason, I wrote "Flowers for Grandpa Dan: A gentle story to help children understand Alzheimer's disease." This beautifully illustrated picture book follows a family through the entire disease process. Faced with the daily realities of the disease, Danny and his family find ways to adapt to Grandpa Dan's changing needs. Through it all, Danny learns that there is one important thing that never changes. An informational page, provided by the Alzheimer's Association, St. Louis Chapter, offers adults suggestions for helping children cope. "Flowers for Grandpa Dan" is available on Amazon.com. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the Alzheimer's Association.

What happens to Grandpa.......2005-03-09
It is a great book for the whole family. It tells how a family deals with there Grand father who has alztimers. The girl named Kate who helps her Grand father remember things by a photo albume, the way she helps is write the stories that went with the pictures. I would give it three stars because it is not really a kids book it is more a family kind of book. But it is still a great book. And the pictures are great they are watercolors.
ANOTHER GREAT RESOURCE ABOUT ALZHEIMER'S FOR CHILDREN.......2004-07-02
Contrary to popular belief, Ms. Shriver's book wasn't actually the first book that was geared toward children in an attempt to help them have a better understanding about Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Ann Frantti wrote a book entitled "Grandma's Cobwebs" several years ago on this same topic. Not only does her book explain the workings of this dreadful disease, it also has a supplementary booklet that has FAQs to help parents with any questions their children may have.
Unfortunately, Dr. Frantti doesn't have the benefit of Ms. Shriver's "star power" in terms of getting publicity about "Grandma's Cobwebs," but her book is excellent.

Book Description
Raising a child with a neuromuscular disorder can be a overwhelming experience for even the strongest parent or grandparent. Dr. Charlotte Thompson, a leading authority in pediatric neuromuscular disorders, draws on her 38 years of experience treating children with muscular dystrophy, spinal atrophy, congenital and mitochondrial myopathies, Charcot-Marie-Tooth, and all the childhood neuromuscular disorders. Her book provides not only medical facts but much practical advice on how to cope with the many challenges of day-to-day parenting a child with neuromuscular disease. Dr. Thompson discusses how to cope with the initial diagnosis of a neuromuscular disorder and then suggests ways to get beyond the shock, numbness, and anger that may occur. She describes each of the principal diseases giving the history, signs and symptoms, the usual course, outcome, genetics, and any possible treatments. Subsequent chapters offer advice on when to ask for a second opinion about the diagnosis, how to navigate the medical maze and work with a child's medical team. Tips on finding the most appropriate school placement and developing an individual education program (IEP) are invaluable. Dr. Thompson stresses the importance of taking one day at a time and insists that parents must care for themselves. She offers suggestions for developing family closeness and even how to make time for fun. Wise advice from parents of children with neuromuscular disease is inserted in boxes throughout the chapters. A large appendix gives resources state by state and country by country. There is no training that prepares you to be the parent of a child with a disability, but Raising a Child with a Neuromuscular Disorder should be a great help to parents, grandparents, and anyone who cares for a child or young person.
Customer Reviews:
This book save my son's life.......2005-02-03
Dr. Thompson was right. The entire body is a muscle. I followed her words and got a base line exam from every profession. Since my son looks good I was told not to worry. Although, many were surprised that he could walk. I kept asking what about his heart, lungs, gi and eyes. I was told not to worry.
I made the appointments with the cardiologist, geneticist, gi, pulmonary, optical. It was no surprise, my son had a hole in his heart, was aspirating, has mild cortical visual impairment. My family (father and uncle's) are misdiagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) and we have Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy.
Just as Dr. Thompson states, "Don't let any doctor tell you that a specific problem is just a sympton of the disease/condition. Get a proper opinion from a professional in that area."
A must-have book for the affected family, w/minor flaws.......1999-12-16
Raising a Child discusses all the forms of muscular dystrophy, so JDMS only gets scant treatment. Even so, most of the book is useful and practical. The introduction suggests it not be read cover-to-cover, but used as a chapter-by-chapter reference to find advice on the specific topics covered. Each chapter does stand alone in this way, but parents with a newly-diagnosed JDMS child may want to read the first six chapters right away.
The book begins with a description of common reactions to an initial diagnosis: shock, numbness, denial, anger and grief. There are good suggestions for handling these stages, including dealing with stress and having creative and enjoyable outlets for parents and children. Another very useful chapter follows: the author thoroughly discusses getting a correct diagnosis and finding a primary doctor who is both caring and knowledgeable. The author warns us against doctors who are arrogant or controlling or who don't take enough time to diagnose a rare condition. In this case, a second opinion is called for. And in many cases, a specialist may be the best doctor for your child, an option that should be discussed and also should be covered by your insurance.
Choosing and communicating with your medical team is crucial, and there are common-sense suggestions such as keeping a notebook, using a tape recorder, and keeping a record of tests. One critical characteristic of good medical professionals is they seek out and respect the observations of parents and children. Parents can also help foster good communication, and there are good suggestions in this area: being on time for appointments, using good phone manners, and giving an occasional thank-you note or small gift.
You'll find some good information on dealing with insurance companies in one chapter, including keeping a meticulous paper trail of medical information and insurance documents and finding help, if needed, in handling insurance problems.
The author presents some very wise advice on maintaining a perspective wider than the disease; both by remembering your child's other mental and physical health needs and by considering the recreational and emotional needs of all family members who are affected, including the parents. One contribution to your child's sense of well-being and independence comes form his ability to do things for himself, so every step you can make in that direction is very important. Detailed discussions of hygiene, assistive devices, travel and safety considerations make this part of the book very practical.
The author includes tips on coping with the emotional ups and downs of your child. Often, children can only express themselves by bad behavior. The best way to deal with children's anger and fear is to pay attention to non-verbal as well as verbal cues and let them know you understand. In some cases, outside help may be a good idea. Other strategies for parents are realistic goal-setting, focusing on what the child can do, and letting him take as much control as possible. Along the same lines, children must be treated as normally as possible, and this includes discipline. There are practical suggestions for mealtime discipline, chores and acknowledging triumphs.
One important chapter for school-age children with muscle problems talks about helping parents and children cope with the delicate balance between having their needs met and being as normal as possible. In this case, parents often have to be a strong advocate for their child, sometimes meeting reluctance on the part of the school. At times, it takes a great deal of attention and monitoring. The whole issue of over-all advocacy for your child is also discussed, with pointers to help, including building a support system and using professional advocates when necessary.
Other chapters deal with keeping a healthy outlook, living in the present, and dealing with the possible death of your child. A glossary includes a discussion of genetics, disease information and possible chores for children.
There are several notable omissions, in this reviewer's opinion. Faith is only mentioned as an afterthought, while most parents find it an important part of coping with a childhood disease. The author's specific knowledge of JDMS is not impressive. Most troubling, though, is the lack of any mention of the Internet as a possible source of information, advocacy and support. Not one e-mail address or link, or support site is listed. For a book published just a few months ago, this is an egregious failing.

Just Right.......2006-06-13
I purchased Grandfather and Me originally, and just found the Grandmother and me book, I am very pleased with it, as my parents are Grandparents for the first time, and this is all so exciting! It is nice that it holds the interest of Grandparents, allowing them to share the family history through the family tree, and talking about what things were like when they were children, and when I was a child, as well as things that children identify with such as "what animal your Grandparent most looks like". It is in no way offending, unless you are so easily offended that speaking to children ( who are most often brutally honest) is a little more than you can take. My parents can't wait to get started!
Grandmother and Me: A Special Book for You and Your Grandmo.......2005-05-04
I bought two of these books, and upon closer inspection, decided NOT to send them for Mother's Day. This book caught my attention as a great way to connect the generations and preserve precious family information, however, once I looked at it more closely, I felt that some of the questions were a little crass. For example, it asks the child to list things about the grandmother that drive him/her crazy; it asks a series of questions like, "If your grandmother were an animal, what animal would she be?"; it asks which cariacature the child's grandmother most resembles, featuring almost-harsh, exaggerated drawings of grandmothers. I just felt that some grandmothers might not enjoy certain parts of the book. I wish there were another book similar to this one that could be filled out together by grandmom/grandchild. It is aesthetically pleasing, a lot of the content is good, the illustrations are really colorful, and the tone of the book is fun, but certain parts just felt abrasive to me. Unfortunately, I'll be returning the books for this reason.

Customer Reviews:
I can relate to this..........2005-06-29
My dad named me for his mother who died of colon cancer several years before my birth. My birthday and her death date are only a week apart. Though I never got to know her, I've always felt that she was keeping a close eye on me. She played mom to six very mischevious children, and guardian angel to at least this grandchild. This song and the book always make me think of her.
My brother's-in-law father passed away very suddenly only a few weeks ago. He mentioned in his eulogy how much his dad loved his grandchildren, even though they are not yet conceived. An absolute truth that resonated with his wife (my sister), myself and our other two sisters who never met our grandmother, but have every assurance that she loves us.
I've bought the book for myself and for my future nieces and nephews, so they know they have guardian angels.
Amazing book!.......2003-04-17
I would trust Naomi Judd if I didn't trust another person in the whole world! Her book is beautiful, her songs are beautiful, her daughters are beautiful, her life is beautiful! Thank you, Naomi! In a world where so many people are invested in "taking," you are definitely a "giver." You enrich our lives in so many ways.
Naomi Judd's Guardian Angels is an Inspiration for Children.......2001-11-19
This book for "all ages" is a timeless tale about our connections with our ancestors. A spin-off from a best-selling Naomi Judd song, Judd's Guardian Angels reminds us that we belong no matter where we are. The hardback book also includes a cd of the song that inspired the book.
The book begins with a forward from Naomi Judd that describes how the song and the book came to be. It is then followed by a short and simple rhyming story. The story revolves around the phrase, "And if you look real close you'll see our eyes are just the same." A young girl takes comfort in the photograph of her great-grandparents and feels a special closeness to them, even though she had never met them. She believes they're watching over her and that she is never alone because of that.
Probably one of the most charming aspects of the book are the illustrations. I may be a little biased, however, since Dan Andreasen is one of my favorite illustrators. He breathes life into characters that may otherwise seem flat and ordinary.
The beautiful watercolor paintings inside this book almost make it feel like an art gallery. Andreasen's token soft character expressions and wonderful colors make the story complete and add a sense of awe to the book.
As a whole, the book is wonderful and great to read aloud to kids and grownups alike. Its simple text allows the reader to grow on his or her own, filling in the spaces with their own personal experience. It is a true tribute to family and a great buy for the holidays.
LOVE CAN BUILD A BRIDGE!.......2001-05-15
"Where you come from is as important as where you're going," so says and sings Naomi Judd through the eyes of a child in this charming story inspired by reflections on her great-grandparents. The book is written for children ages 4-8. The song on the companion CD is for anyone. Included in the book are beautiful paintings by Dan Andreasen which capture and enhance the quality of this gift of family love, and those special places and memories stored in the heart. It is an enchanting book, and yes, love can build a bridge across time.
A Delight!.......2000-09-07
When I saw a copy of it in my local bookstore, I thought I get that since it's such a lovely book. So, I brought that as a birthday present for a well-known person. Only one problem, though. How do you open the CD that comes with the book? Anyway, great book, so, I'll might get it for my mother when I find another copy.

A heartwarming, upbeat and positive book.......2006-09-15
Written by a grandmother whose husband has multiple sclerosis, My Grampy Can't Walk is a children's picturebook designed to help young people understand family illnesses. The simple rhyming verse and warm, flowing color illustrations tell the story of a young child and a grandfather who share a special bond; even though the grandfather can't walk and uses a wheelchair to get around, it doesn't stop them from enjoying life together. A heartwarming, upbeat and positive book, highly recommended. My Grampy can't walk. / But he can read to me / Stories of far-away places. / Or see who laughs first / When we make funny faces.

Repackaged in a colorful, eye-catching jacket, this bestselling, inspirational quote book makes the perfect gift for the special people in our lives.
To most of us, our grandma and grandpa are special people who have nurtured us from childhood into adulthood. A warm hug, freely given cookies and candy, a chance to stay up past bedtime are special memories that only our grandparents have given us.
Today's grandparents are just as likely to serve chicken nuggets as chicken soup and teach a computer game instead of a card game. Still, grandparents are always different from parents, allowed to spoil a child with the special love they give.
Grandparents Are Special is a loving tribute to those who seem to nurture with great patience, a celebration of the unique role grandparents play in our lives. Filled with anecdotes, poems, and quotes, this book is a perfect gift to those very special people.
