4 out of 5 stars stretching for pregnancy.......2007-10-10

An Ok book, but I believe there needs be more information and excercise on the pelvic floor, and its importance during pregnancy, labour and afterwards

3 out of 5 stars a so-so resource.......2007-09-25

I teach yoga, and had a 6month pregnant woman join my 2ndlevel class.
I wanted to be sure to treat her tenderly.
This book does have suggested postures to use for prenatal, dividing them up into trimesters, but it was weak in theory.
I was hoping to understand the theory behind why she should not lay on her right side, or why she should not lower her head below her heart.
Overall, as long as you follow the photos, it appears to be safe.

5 out of 5 stars Safe and effective.......2007-03-19

This teacher is of Iyengar background. The photos are dated, but content is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was looking for..........2006-11-03

This is a pretty good book if you are going to be doing yoga at home...I was hoping more for a book that would give me suggestions on alternate positions for poses that I shouldn't be doing in group classes. All in all though, not a bad book, just not quite what I was looking for.

3 out of 5 stars Not for teachers.......2006-09-29

This is a handbook designed for students. I bought it to build my prenatal teaching library and am disappointed. The pictures are dated but the poses are classic. There are also poses for postnatal.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars thank you Baby Om...........2007-03-09

Baby Om is a wonderful way to get back on your feet after child birth. Yoga gives my son and I an opportunity to really connect with each other while I get a chance to get my body back in shape again. I really like the fact that the asanas are actually challenging, unlike most other yoga books I have come across. I plan on buying Baby Om for all of my pregnant friends.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect combination and integration!.......2007-02-28

This book is exactly what I was looking for... it offers a great yoga workout in each stage of postpartum recovery and getting back into shape, and it also integrates your infant. A lot of programs are either primarily focused on the infant (and, let's face it, we as new moms are the ones who need the workout and the release that comes with it), or forget the baby altogher having you leave your little one lying next to you (which is impossible once they become mobile). This book combines both and integrates yogic movements with your baby and without, depending on the move, as well as giving tips on infant stimulation throughout the practice. It also teaches different asanas to practice based on the age of your infant. It is the perfect yoga book for new moms!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for new mothers and yogis.......2006-02-23

This books is a great complement to the yoga pregnancy books. Once you have had your baby you can get back to your practice or start a new yoga practice. The book presents 4 classes for different stages of the baby's growth or mother's ability to move. In general, it is also a good introduction to yoga with basic introductory chapters. I am an expectant mother and yoga teacher trainee. I am planning on using this material as soon as I get certified and start teaching my prenatal and postnatal classes.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for mom.......2005-08-08

I loved this book for postpartum yoga - it has a special section for cesarean moms, which was the reason I bought it. It has series of gradually increasing challenge, which I also like. However, I found it WAY too hard to incorporate my baby at first. Having a c section, it was hard enough to get in and out of the poses. Also, my newbron needs lots of attention and its hard to relax and focus on myself. Maybe this will change with time. Also, in terms of the baby interactions segments of each series, Baby Om was a little demanding of its babies - these sections included a full body massage and several exercise movements all in one sequence, and encouraged the mom to "keep trying" when baby resisted - my baby did not like this. I prefer Itsy Bitsy Yoga for baby yoga, as it gives very useful tips (such as going slow, stopping if baby is unhappy, etc) and offers different poses based on small developmental steps. A great book for moms, especially c section moms, but not the best for baby in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Very Complete.......2004-06-01

I found this book to be very complete, with details on body positioning/benefits/etc. for each pose/exercise for you and your baby as well as many variations to make it work for you and your baby. They also included some information on baby massage and a special workout for c-section recovery. Its worth reading a few times before you dive into a workout to choose what you want to do and how you want to do it, rather than read while doing the workout and getting bogged down in all the options.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-09-01

A big companion during and after my pregnancy. A beautiful voice. Excellent advices and simple meditations. A dinamic vision of life. I strongly recommend. A perfect gift.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide for expectant mothers.......2007-02-21

I can only say that I wish I had this book when I was having my children - Gurmukh relates her own personal experience in a way that a lot of women in my age group can identify with. Through the beauty of yoga and meditation, she has found a lovely way to hand the power of your own pregnancy and decisions that need to be made back to the mother where it belongs. I recommend this book to all expectant moms!

5 out of 5 stars I feel blissful too.......2007-01-26

After reading Spiritual Midwifery and Birthing From Within, I thought nothing would match the beauty and strength contained in those books. Imagine my surprise when I opened Gurmukh's book and found myself immediately captured by her descriptions of her feelings during her first trimester of pregnancy. I was hooked. My husband bought me the book for Christmas and I am using the exercises and Gurmukh's wise, nurturing voice to accompany me during my second pregnancy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - Loved by me and Friends.......2006-11-13

Gurmukh is amazing at bringing in a completely different angle/aspect to pregnancy and childbirth. It so helped me (43 1/2 when I had my first child) and several friends.

1 out of 5 stars Serious mistakes, packed with prejudice.......2004-10-14

I bought this book after reading some very positive reviews on Amazon.com. Unfortunately there are grave misconceptions and mistakes in Gurmukh's book, which means I don't dare trust her advice. Some of the worst mistakes include:

Nourishment - Gurmukh claims there is more protein in broccoli than in meat (p 80). She suggests pregnant women should try a vegetarian or vegan diet. There is very little protein in broccoli (3,5%) whereas there is a lot in meat (15-20%). However there is plenty of proten in soy flour (37%), nuts (15-25%), beans, peas and tofu (8 - 10%). Gurmukh's claim is wrong, potentially harmful and unnecessary, since there are lots of great sources for vegetable protein, just not broccoli.

Exercise - Gurmukh says she once had a student who was a dancer on a fairly rigourous training schedule. She ended up having a C-section because her cervix would not dilate (p 151). Gurmukh thinks her abdominal muscles might have been so tight that she couldn't let go. I have studied the subject of pregnancy and exercise carefully and versions of this story are often used to scare women to take it easy during their pregnancy. Yes, there are exercising women who had to have a C-section. But this complication in childbirth is more common in women who exercise little or not at all! Abdominal muscles cannot get too tight to give birth, it is the cervix and uterus that are involved in the birth process. Exercising women who generally find it easier to relax than those who don't and recover faster after childbirth. Read James F. Clapp, "Exercising through your pregnancy" for well researched information.

Heavy Metal - Gurmukh says that heavy metal is bad for your baby p 88). This is a matter of opinion but my personal belief is that anything that makes mother feel good will make baby happy.

Men - Gurmukh thinks most men can't stand to see blood, are unsuitable as birth attendants and can only do one thing at a time. Now, let's not generalize... the men I know are intuitive, sensitive, brave and supportive. And I can only do one thing at a time!

Furthermore, Gurmukh says that religion doesn't matter but at the same time she recommens that everyone should try making an altar for the baby, celebrate the arrival of the child's soul and so on. If you like a lot of references to religion and God, this book may be right for you.

Anything good in the book? There is some wholesome advice against circumcision and planned C-sections and Gurmukh is in favour of family beds and attachment. But if these are subjects that interest you, you'll get better value for money if you buy a copy of Sears "The Baby Book". The book is not as much about yoga as about how to expect, deliver and be a mother the Gurmukh way. There is a single yogic exercise at the end of each chapter, I would have preferred suggested exercise programs with routines to follow every day.
