Realistic and practical advice for parents of college-age kids
Parents whose kids are away at college have a tough tightrope to walk: they naturally want to stay connected to their children, yet they also need to let go. What's more, kids often send mixed messages: they crave space, but they rely on their parents' advice and assistance. Not surprisingly, it's hard to know when it's appropriate to get involved in your child's life and when it's better to back off.
You're On Your Own (But I'm Here If You Need Me) helps parents identify the boundaries between necessary involvement and respect for their child's independence. Marjorie Savage, who as a parent herself empathizes with moms and dads, but who as a student services professional understands kids, offers advice on wide-ranging issues, including:
How to cope with your family's mood changes in the months before move-in day on campus
Why students complain about the food but still manage to gain fifteen pounds their first year
How to teach basic financial responsibility, including the handling of credit cards and academic expenses
When parental intervention is critical
With anecdotes and suggestions from experienced parents and college staffs nationwide, the strategies and tips provided throughout will help you to create a loving, supportive partnership responsive to the needs of both you and your children.

Letting Go WIth Grace.......2006-11-04
"You're on Your Own" and "Letting Go" (Coburn/Treeger) are both insightful companions for an emotionally intense moment of parenting. Another great book for sending a young adult into the world with the loving counsel of the people important to him or her (YOU!) is "Words to Live By: A Journal of Wisdom for Someone You Love" (Emily/Kate Marshall).
Must Read For Moms and Dads of HS Grads.......2005-05-25
This is a great book for parents of high school seniors to help prepare for eventual empty nesting. Sending your kid to college is like potty training, you know you have to do it, but you aren't so sure if you'll live through it. But of course they do learn to use the toilet and they move away to college as well (hopefully in that order)!
Marjorie is very thorough in explaining what to expect every step of the way. It prepares you for orientation, moving, visits home, etc., so you can do your best to help you and your "child" navigate the college maze. She covers all angles, so if junior will be commuting or moving to the other side of the country, you'll get guidance.
I now have two daughters at University of Minnesota where Marjorie heads the University of Minnesota parent office and does a super job. My friends have kids at other universities and they are amazed at how in touch I am with the happenings on campus because of the weekly update U-MN parents get. It's so much easier to have a conversation with your kid if you are enlightened. She makes sure we know what they need to do when (like registering or paying bills) so we don't have to nag the kid. At U-MN we are lucky to have her, now everyone can benefit from her insight and wisdom.
Even Better than Parent Orientation.......2004-03-07
I got more out of the first chapter of this book than I did from two days of Parent Orientation at my son's college! The author obviously empathizes with college students as well as with their parents. Kids who are starting college can do some pretty bizarre things that parents can't always understand. This book explains things from the parents' point of view as well as the students'. It just makes sense. And it gives me a lot of hope.

Anyone facing an occasional dinner for one, making solo brown-bag lunches, or living alone will find Toni Lydecker's Serves One invaluable. She shows you how to make tabbouleh and ratatouille in modest amounts so you don't have to eat them for days. She even gives a recipe for pizza dough you can turn into perfect, single-size pies. Who needs soggy take-out when you can make your own potato and pesto pizza, or luxuriate on Sunday with a creamy Smoked Salmon Pizza? (You bake the dough, then add the topping; it's much better than a bagel!)
Lydecker tells how to make Mini Meatloaf and Oven-Barbecued Pork Ribs, just the right amount of Chicken Fingers, even your very own Shellfish Steamer, a kind of clambake. Many recipes cook in 5 to 20 minutes. When stews and soups take longer, they don't need tending. If any cookbook will ever wean you off frozen entrees and instant mixes so you eat as well on your own as with family or friends, Serves One can do it. --Dana Jacobi

Eats Alone.......2007-05-09
The book is put together well with servings for one. What I would have liked is a few more simple meals. Even though the recipes are sized for one I still find it difficult to find and cook just one piece of meat to make the dishes in the book.
Buy This Book!.......2007-02-05
Are you on your own and tired of eating cereal and calling it dinner? Can't afford another night of fast food or ordering in? Well then buy this book!! The meals in here are quick and easy to make. I have made Soothing Tortellini-Broccolini Soup, Sizzling Shrimp With Garlic and Salmon Packet With Sicilian Flavors from the book and they are all fantastic!! Also, Toni put in some suggestions you can substitute other things for in case you don't have a particular ingredient. The directions are easy to follow, which is a plus, and you don't end up with a million things to wash after :).
Hate to cook.......2006-11-05
I got some ideas from this book, but a lot of the recipes required exotic items that take time to find and add to cost.
Serves One: Simple Meals to Savor When You're on Your Own.......2006-09-02
A pretty complete cook book. The beginning is really good for beginning cooks. The recipes are basic and substitues are provided in some cases. The only thing missing is the nutrional values which could be helpful for people with special needs.
Worthwhile and accessible "middlebrow" book for the novice and intermediate solo cook.......2006-07-02
Even with my limited experience, (but I've dated and lived with some very good, experienced cooks), I can tell that about half the recipes in this book are uninspired, workaday fare. They are there to fill out the pages and create a thicker book that the average cookbook shopper will think gives more "bang" for the buck.
But even with that caveat, I feel that this book deserves an extra star for its attempt to focus on the needs of an underserved American market : beginning and intermediate cooks who need (or want) to start cooking for themselves. For this audience, "Serves One" is a great choice, especially if they need to get started right away and can't wait to score a copy of "Going Solo In the Kitchen".
I am OK with the "averageness" of many of these recipes. I don't need gourmet cooking, I don't need bistro fare, I don't need Mario Batali cuisine. I can go to my local bistros for that. At this stage in my cooking career, I need simple, foolproof recipes that deliver decent results with a minimum of fancy ingredients, and I need them scaled for 1 or 2 servings so I don't waste time doing algebra in my head while I'm trying to master the basics of braising or sauteing...or else stuffing my refrigerator with more wasted leftovers than I'll ever be able to finish. I also want some variety, so I don't get bored with making the same 5 or 6 dishes again and again. It's OK if some of the food I produce is unexciting - whatever I cook and make for myself with 'Serves One" is bound to be cheaper, fresher, tastier and better for me than any pizza, takeout or drive through food around.
And in fact, some of the recipes do sound promising ( I'm looking forward to making the "Pickled,Spiced Grapes"), and a couple have rewarded my inexpert efforts with pleasant, satisfying dishes that gave me confidence in my abilities to cook proper, worthwhile meals.
So in that spirit, I would recommend this as a worthwhile addition to the beginning/intermediate cooks' library. My ex-girlfriends might turn their noses up at it, but this has been a very useful book for me, well worth the purchase price and the time spent going through it.

More depth?.......2004-03-21
I like Seth Godin's funky style, but would really appreciate more depth and practical tips like the new Asian authors did with Dot Zen.
Points you in the right direction.......2001-12-10
Once in a while a book that really helps comes along. This is one of them for someone that has no idea on how to start up a new business.
I got this book for my wife who decided to consult and needed some business ideas to help her give more of herself. All the underlying aspects of what to do in particular cases are covered in the book. It seems strange to say that because the book is so thin, but it does the job. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 was the legal part of it was lacking. We had some specific areas of concern regarding legal matters and it did not answer them, nor even tell you where you might find the answer.
Good primer on starting a business!.......2001-06-18
This is a comprehensive, information packed volumn on starting your own business. Covers all the basics from start to finish on how to set up your business and market it so that it is profitable. The author is a small business and e-commerce expert and demonstrates that he thoroughly understands the ins and outs of running a business.
I was clueless and found a great reference tool in the book.......1998-12-29
I obtained a copy of 'Clueless' from the library, along with several other books on starting a small business. 'Clueless' was the only book I read from cover to end over the Christmas holiday season. The book is well-structured and filled with ample information from developing a business plan to marketing your business to expanding your growing business. The sidebars provide helpful hints from other business owners and each chapter contains a section on other related books for further research. 'Clueless' is current with Website addresses for the small business entrepreneur. Being a Business major, 'Clueless' appeared to be a compilation of all my business college courses. Enough detail is provided so that the reader can begin to formulate her company without having any pre-existing knowledge of how to run a business...and without having a Business degree! This was one library book that I didn't have to renew. In fact, I'm purchasing my own copy for a reference tool.

Tick Tock, You're Dead.......2005-10-31
This book is a great book for those of you who like mystery and adventure. It is about a girl who goes to New York with her family. While at New York she wanted to have fun and go to see the Statue of Liberty, but her parents are museum geeks. They love going to museums. So they went to a museum and her parents told her to watch over her little brother, but he ran away from her, and she went after him. She didn't see where he had gone off to. Then she opened a door to a room where there was a scientist about to conduct an experiment having to do with time travel, and he confused her for his assistant who is suppose to go into the time machine. As she was trying to tell him that she wasn't his assistant her little brother ran through the portal. Now she has no choice than to go in time to find him before it's to late. I liked this book, because it has twenty different endings. Also you get to choose in which direction the story goes as you read it. What I didn't like were some of the endings, because they weren't happy endings. This is great book for those of you who love Goosebump books.

Buy This Book Before Making A Business Decision, Ladies!.......2006-10-15
****
This is a great introductory book about what an adult sex toy business for women involves. It is strictly for a woman who is interested in distributing sex toys via the party plan method in an extremely tasteful way (as opposed to a sleezy or crude way). It would not be helpful for men who wish to start this type of business, as the book is written strictly for women. It also would not be helpful to a woman who is interested in selling hard-core adult sex products in the ways men have traditionally sold such products to each other (via pornographic sites, adult book stores, etc.) This is for the "new way" of marketing sexual aids to women, via romance, self-empowerment, and selling "sexual fulfillment"---techniques that are unique to this business of woman-to-woman sales.
The book covers MLMs and already established party plans. It also covers starting your own business from scratch. It compares the different costs and benefits of each method of business.
The greatest value of this book is that it covers what it's really, really like to be in the adult sex toy business, things I'd never thought of, like customer returns, liability and local laws, product delivery and privacy, control of guests at parties (yes, they can get rowdy!), the hard work and commitment necessary to be successful, and more. It really opened my eyes, changing my idea of the adult sex toy business as something that seemed like a fun and funky idea to the harsh realities of operating such a business. It is not a discouraging book, just a realistic book. It helps you to evaluate if you are the type of person that would truly enjoy the day-to-day operations of "having a romance business" (a popular euphemism for this business) before you run out and spend several hundred to over a thousand dollars to buy a kit from a company.
It is written by the two women who started Lady Bliss, a popular adult sex toy party plan, and details the often humorous experiences they ran into. As you might imagine, it comes off as being a little biased towards joining a party plan versus starting your own party plan, but just a little; this is a little natural, since this is the author's business. The authors cover several other party plans as well as sharing their own experiences starting their own, so you definitely get enough information to make a good decision and get started in your own research, saving you lots of time and even more money.
This book is a fun read (as you can tell by the cover) even if you don't plan on ever starting a business, but are just curious. If you are thinking of starting a "romance business", you'd be wise to buy this book; I'm certain you won't be sorry.

A Must read for beginners .......2005-08-30
I think this was a o.k book on the toy party industry and I recommend it to those starting out in the business and need some idea or base in which to start. I learned a few things from it but as you advanced and need more training and understanding a source I would recommend is [...]

Customer Reviews:
A good introduction about the subject.......2007-07-25
We bought this book to read about this concept which was new to us. We have practiced so far some of the excercises, like the Kick Game and playing music and talking with the baby. I guess some of these excercises make sense because they are related to our culture. We are anxious to see the results.
I would recommend this book for parents-to-be who want to build bonds with their children before they are born.
Excellent Book.......2006-07-05
Thank you for this great book. Super information and easy to read!
Read the book and used the product.......2004-04-16
I bought the book and the BabyPlus Prenatal Education System recommended by it. I used this for my baby from month 5 of my pregnancy. The system recommends that the product is used twice daily for one hour each session. Because I didn't find any reviews, I decided to be a little conservative and only used it for half an hour once a day. Here are my results:
My baby is now almost 3 months old.
Babies are born more relaxed with their eyes and hands open, and crying little: This is very true. Many people have commented on how alert my newborn was. He also started following black-and-white objects with his eyes since he was two days old ! He is WAY ahead with his visual milestones.
Babies nurse better: this is partly true. My baby latched on right away. Unfortunately, he would fall asleep after 10 minutes, so I ended up having to switch to the bottle.
Babies sleep better: once their night-day cycles are resolved, it definitely seems like my baby sleeps well at night. Not sure if this is just his temperament or due to the BabyPlus.
Babies and children have longer attention spans and reach developmental milestones more quickly: the attention span is very true for my child. He can focus on books we read to him for 20 or 30 minutes at a time! He will play with his baby gym for an hour before needing attention! Regarding the milestones, he is ahead on some, on time with others, behind on some.
Babies have advanced language, musical, and creative abilities: he loves music, but with the other stuff it is too early to tell
Babies and children have enhanced curiosity and the ability to gather and process information very quickly: my baby definitely seems very curious about the world around him.
Babies and children have a better ability to self-soothe: Probably true. Hard to say.
Children demonstrate expanded cognitive abilities - testing has shown higher than average IQs: too early to tell with my baby
Prenatal Stimulation.......2001-07-09
The whole idea of prenatal stimulation fascinated me. There was some mention of it in another book I was reading and so I bought this book to find out more. I was not disappointed. It is easy to understand the concepts behind the communication you are having with your unborn baby because the book explains why you are doing what you are doing. It also backs up the notion of prenatal stimulation with case studies and results. This is my fourth child, the other three being ages 19, 22 & 23, so this concept is very new to me and it's wonderful and exciting to be able to participate in a process where I can give my unborn child "one up" by the time she is born.
A good but partial beginning.......2001-06-08
The method presented in this book is useful, although it includes no controlled scientific evidence for either short or long-term benefits. I would strongly suggest expectant parents to look at Dr. Sarah Brewer's Super Baby, and especially the proven approach that author recommends, the BabyPlus prenatal enrichment system (www.babyplus.com), which Dr. Van de Carr's method could complement.
