Book Description
An anthology of 100 lively, informative articles on all aspects of adopting from China.
The voices in Passage are fresh, direct, and informed. Read original research by Kay Johnson and her Chinese colleagues--the world's top authorities on adoption and abandonment in China. Get advice from renowned physicians Dana Johnson, Jerri Ann Jenista, and others who specialize in international adoption. Enjoy personal accounts from adoptive parents about the joys of adopting and the challenges and triumphs of parenthood.
The writers--adoptive parents and adoption and medical professionals from across the United States, Canada and Britain--discuss the process up close and personally, from the emotionally charged period of waiting to adopt, through the adoption journey, settling in as a new or enlarged family, specific issues of health and development in young children adopted from China, the special rewards and challenges of adopting children over the age of one and of single parenting, perspectives on adoption from China from inside and outside the adoption community, the loaded issues of culture, language, identity, and race, accounts of going back to China after adopting, and, finally, a look down the road of adoptive family life at issues that don't come up in families formed the "usual" way.
A Passage to the Heart: Writings from Families with Children from China is the collaborative effort of more than two dozen chapters of FCC and similar adoptive-family support groups in three countries. Each purchase benefits both the Amity Foundation (fccny.org/oaa.asp) and the Foundation for Chinese Orphanages (thefco.org), which have been working to improve conditions in Chinese orphanages since the mid 1990s.

A handbook for adopting a daughter from China.......2007-09-08
I wasn't expecting the wealth of information that I got from this book! I was expecting short heartfelt stories about adopting from China. It has that, but also so much more. It is full of useful information for every step of the process, including information for pediatricians that might not have experience with chinese children. I highly recommend!
great book.......2005-09-08
This book is very informative, not so much on the official processes but in what to expect when returning home. There are also many useful resources listed in the book.
A Tad More Perspective.......2005-08-28
I have been reading this marvelous resource but was deeply discouraged when I read four articles in a row about sickly children. It reminded me of Sophie's Choice in having to choose. How does one do that??? Here is how it goes: you arrive in China, are handed a very ill child and the next day, having spent a significant amount of time with this child and attempted to bond, are handed another one. You are then left with the onerous choice you must make. I was so moved by this only to move on to the next article with a like scenario. Two different outcomes. THEN the next article contains yet another sick child. Then the editors move to the next subject. Very disheartening. The book is all what everyone else has written as well, but be forewarned, that there are some tough scenarios of others whose paths we all intend to follow. I have now changed my prayers to reflect the reality check the book provided. Being so close to our referral date was probably not great timing to confront these issues.
The single best source of info. on Adoption from China.......2005-06-16
This wonderful book provides information about the technical and emotional aspects of adopting from China. I read this book before I sent my dossier to China five years ago and am re-reading it now. The book addresses all phases of the adoption process - from making the decision to adopt to raising your child. I give copies of this book to clients and friends who are considering international adoption.
You Must Buy This Book.......2004-04-17
This book is a must-have for people adopting from China. My husband and I are in the long waiting portion of the process. The chapters about waiting have been so helpful. There is so much useful information in this book from waiting to packing to the challenges of raising a child adopted from China. I feel so much more informed about what is in store for us.

lame.......2006-12-20
Did not help me at all. It is a sweet story of one mother's traditions; but, unless you would follow instructions on how to give a tea party that uses a pretty china plate as a symbol of purity to be guarded and kept, it's sweet and pointless.
Simply Wonderful! Simply Needed! Simply Super!.......2002-11-20
I am a huge fan of Robin Jones Gunn..have litterly grown up with her books! Even though I don't have kids and am not married I had to buy the newsest book by my favorite author. I read this book within 30 minutes and just had tears in my eyes..just thinking about the day when I get to do these awesome things with my daughter. This book puts in simple ways how you make this journey into womenhood so much more special. I read about the Wildflower dreams from Ms. Gunn's book "Until Now" and quickly went and found my own wildflowers. I am looking for the opporutnity to start the china plate tradition with my little sister as well as with my aunts and my mother. THank You Mrs. Gunn for a wonderful and much needed book!
Book Description
A guide to restoring the successful models used by ancient cultures the world over to raise adolescent boys
⢠Explains the negative effects of Western youth culture and how it can be transformed
⢠Offers instructions for integrating basic rites of passage into modern family life and youth programs
For tens of thousands of years all across the globe, societies have been coping with raising adolescents. Why is it then that native cultures never had the need for juvenile halls, residential treatment centers, mood-altering drugs, or boot camps? How did they avoid the high incidence of teen violence America is experiencing, and how did they prevent their youth from relying on drugs and alcohol, the use of which has become so prevalent in Western society?
In
From Boys to Men, Bret Stephenson shows readers that older cultures didnât magically avoid adolescence; instead they developed successful rituals and rites of passage for sculpting teen boys into healthy young men. From Aleutian Eskimos to Polynesian Islanders, from tribal Africans to Australian Aborigines, each culture found archetypal ways to initiate their boys into the adult community. Stephenson explains the basics of rites of passage and offers insight into how to reintroduce these successful practices and traditional understandings into modern family life and programs for youth. He discusses the damaging effects of our youth culture and the negative teen products that are fueled by corporate America and reveals how we can counteract these negative forces by using meaningful rites of passage to create a society with happy and healthy adolescent boys.

Ancient wisdom for modern times.......2007-09-22
A necessity for people who work with at-risk kids! Bret Stephenson has found a way to make the wisdom of ancients accessible and practical for this era. He reminds us that other cultures don't seem to have some of the same problems with their adolescent boys that we in America do and asks some tough questions (and proposes some answers) about why that is. He then shows that through meaningful ritual, important rites of passage, and judicious application of responsibility and respect, today's boys can earn their manhood instead of guessing whether they are men and sailing through the doldrums of adolescent hell. His writing is accessible, peppered with real-life examples of his own experiences with at-risk boys. Excellent!
Book Description
You're in the process of planning your child's bar or bat mitzvah and unanticipated issues keep threatening the joy of this "joyous occasion."Maybe you're divorced and you and your ex are fighting over how much this is all going to cost, never mind how you're going to handle the public awkwardness.Or maybe your spouse isn't Jewish and the whole question of religious meaning is coming up all over again.Or maybe you're worrying about your relatives' disapproval. They're from the city, and your plans for an informal party in the backyard will never meet their expectations. You are in the thick of a complex and pressured moment in your life, sandwiched between the needs of your emerging teenager and your aging parents, dealing with your own issues about being old enough to be the parent of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah (you were always the kid at these affairs, weren't you?), while trying to orchestrate your child's formal coming-of-age in the Jewish community. What would be crazy is if you weren't feeling stressed....For well over a decade, family therapist Judith Davis, Ed.D., has been studying the meaning of the bar/bat mitzvah in the lives of contemporary American Jewish families. In this wise and witty book, the first to focus on the psychological and development issues of the bar/bat mitzvah year, Dr. Davis shows you exactly what you can do to create magic and meaning for the whole family.

Wonderful walk-through of another culture.......2003-10-18
As a non-Jew, I didn't begin to understand the deep significance of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. This book allowed me to be a guest amidst the joy and frustration of planning for this special event. It was a wonderful walk-through of another culture for me and a reminder of the importance of ritual in our lives.
Fantastic book!.......1999-01-04
Every family with a bar/bat mitzvah age child should read this book. It helps you understand exactly what you are all going through emotionally, and it shows you the way to transform the turmoil into a growth-promoting experience.
I plan to buy several to give to family and friends.

Customer Reviews:
Our sons can achieve manhood by design, not by default!.......2001-06-28
This book shows you how to create powerful rites of passage for your sons. So what? In our society, young men struggle with the crucial issue of manhood. They are never sure if they have "arrived" and therefore pursue manhood through individual acts such as sexual conquests, substance abuse, gang violence and other destructive actions. Even those that escape these obviously negative activities often pursue their identities as men through workaholism and excessive materialism. This lack of clear identity harms family relationships and can lead to emotional distress later in life. The creation of a rite of passage for the young man in your life can not only spare him from countless troubles, but also will launch him into a much more certain future. His increased self esteem and peace of mind will lead him to fulfill his destiny rather than fall short of all that life has for him.
Included in the book are chapters on how single mothers and grandparents can host celebrations for their sons. Also, how to host a rite of passage for sons that have already made some bad choices in their lives. In addition, the book explores how churches, community groups, and men's ministries can get involved in turning our nation's youth problems around.
The response to the book throughout the world has been incredible. Parents have caught the vision and are using the book as a model to send their sons into manhood by design, rather than leaving them to stumble toward it by default. Enjoy!

A father helps his sons become men........1998-11-14
The book is basically the account of a camping trip this author took with his oldest son. During the trip, they discuss anything regarding becoming a man. Each has prepared a list of topics. It wasn't just about the bird & bees either. I wish I had a similiar opportunity growing up, and plan to offer something like it to my son. A very enjoyable, insightful read.

A wonderful book in journal form.......2002-11-12
I purchased this book two years after my premature baby was born. Reading and working through this journal helped my deal with issues relating to my baby's birth and subsequent hospital stay. It is an excellent place to record feelings and emotions that at times are too painful to express in any other way. I highly recommend this book to parents of premature infants.
an excellent support for parents.......2001-12-23
Giving birth to a premature baby is an experience that was often not expected, is overwhelming, and introduces parents to a whole new world of hospitals, procedures, and short and long-term complications for their infant. This journal provides parents with a place to structure all of the complicted and often overwhelming feelings brought up by having a premie baby. It highlights common experiences and provides signficant room for parents to journal in response to pertinent questions. It does a nice job of providing the necessary information and structure to help parents cope with their situation.

Elizabeth B. .......2005-03-26
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I particularly liked the way each chapter was prefaced by the Author's own initiatory experience. Shakmah Windrum has brilliantly tied together Ancient Shamanistic Rituals to her own Western Initiatory experiences. In doing so, Windrum has brought forth the heartbeat of the Ancestors and incorporated that heartbeat into modern day life; thereby, broadening the global village. This is a must read for all serious students of shamanism and magick.
African Initiations by Shakmah Winddrum.......2005-03-24
I loved this book. Not only it was full of insightful and interesting information on African rituals and traditions but the author also skillfully added a preface to each chapter where she relates the different phases of initiations to her personal life with humor and honesty. By doing so Shakmah Winddrum intertwined the western life and traditions with those of Africa brilliantly. This is a mind opening book.
This one deserves Six Stars.......2005-03-04
The book African Initiations by Shakmah Winddrum is truly inspirational. In a masterful way the author weaves a beautiful tapestry; showing us that common thread that binds us all. Life is a series of milestones, regardless of who we are, where we grew up, or what the era. On a deeply primal level, the reader is given that sense of connection. Through a bonding that is transcendant of our own individual lives... we find that we really are in this thing call "Life" together. In this book, Shakmah gathers us in and shows us how.
African Initiations.......2005-02-25
When I picked up this book, I expected to read a treatise on African initiations to be used basically for research.
Well, I immediately read the book from cover to cover, and it was, without a doubt, very informative. What impressed me the most was the way it was presented, a way in which everyone can relate to from the initiations in their own lives. It takes you into the world of the initiate, the shaman, with absolute clarity and with the greatest respect. It was presented with feeling.
Within the "exercises" of the book are "prayers" of bonding of family and friends that moved my heart. They reminded me of Khalil Gibran. This is a book to share. I loved it.
African Initiations by Shakmah Winddrum.......2005-02-25
This book is not only captivating but informative. It's like sitting at the feet of the teacher being told her story. If you close your eyes you can almost hear her voice!A must read for all on the path to higher knowledge,
