Book Description

HOPE, HELP, AND A REAL EXPLANATION FOR THE DISEASE OF FOOD ADDICTION

If you have struggled with compulsive eating, dieting, and the guilt and conflict they bring, your life will be changed by this important, life-affirming, and astonishingly wise book.

Anne Katherine, a Certified Eating Disorders Therapist and former compulsive eater, explains the chemical reactions in the brain that work in conjunction with lifelong emotional conflicts to make food—particularly sugar and refined carbohydrates—such a comfort that it's almost like a drug.

Once you realize that your binge eating is a physical disease that can be treated, you can use the book's self-tests, exercises, examination of family issues, and complete recovery program for newfound understanding and confidence.

1 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent, neurotic pop-psychology drivel. NOT for hard-core food addicts.......2007-07-23

Garbage. 98% of this book is pure, unadulterated, contradictory bull----. First, the author claims in Chapter 2 that food addiction is biological. Although she's got the basic science right, that chapter is SO badly-written that the author, apparently realizing that, felt the need to use another several pages to re-explain the whole thing all over again "in a simpler way" at the end of the same chapter. Slogging through Chapter 2 was akin to reading a third-grader's essay in which the student piece-mealed the information from various encyclopediae and other sources in bits and pieces, but didn't quite "get" it herself enough to write clearly or coherently.

In what seems to be an escape from scientific concepts she doesn't understand, the author then abandons the whole biological aspect for most of the rest of the book, and drifts off into useless psychobabble for chapter after unending chapter of self-indulgent pity-party-promotion.

Most of the other 15 chapters in this book are devoted to statements that the real cause of food addiction is an awful, deprived childhood filled with abusive and mean, neglectful, absent parents. According to Ms. Katherine, all food addicts got that way by being emotional basket cases and pathetic abused wrecks: "Sit back in a comfortable chair with a teddy bear or pillow. Wrap your arms around yourself and the bear or pillow. Close your eyes. Send yourself warm, loving thoughts. Give yourself some sympathy for how hard it's been to handle this difficult problem all by yourself." Or this: "When a child isn't held enough, she experiences a deficit. It's horrible then if the child is ridiculed, ignored, or hit for asking to be held. ... She then learns her need leads to pain and punishment and will likely aim her wrong interpretation against herself..."

It only gets much, much worse from there.

Inconsistent with her own early chapter about the bio factors in food addiction (which frankly she doesn't seem to quite understand herself), the author advocates STAGED abstinence - abstain from sugar for a full year, THEN begin abstinence from refined carbohydrates. Meanwhile, it's ok to eat more of other things as long as you're not eating the sugars. Oh, puhleeze!! This is like telling an alcoholic: "Ok, first you have to abstain from hard liquor for a year, but you can keep drinking beer and wine, even more of them if you need to. Meanwhile we'll discuss all the ways you were abused as a child. THEN you can stop drinking for real." Yeah, right.

Addiction is addiction, period. You are simply not going to deal with the biochemical processes involved in food addiction unless you eliminate the chemical triggers completely - ALL sugars, refined carbs, wheat, and high-fat foods.

This author's "plan" is tortuous and unrealistic. She discusses a conversation you are to have with family members, in which you are to state that you will not be capable of making decisions for at least 3 weeks after starting your sugar withdrawal. Hello? Stop real life, just like that, while you walk a cravings-crazy chemical tightrope of half-abstinent hell.

Don't waste your money on this book. Instead, get real information and real solutions from a true expert, someone like Kay Sheppard in Food Addiction: The Body Knows: Revised & Expanded Edition, and From the First Bite: A Complete Guide to Recovery from Food Addiction, in which the genetic tie-ins and biochemistry of food addiction are simply explained, and immediate total abstinence is recommended, along with providing a detailed, real, workable plan which really does work to eliminate cravings fast and promote clear thinking and recovery.

I find this book very useful in understanding binge eating disorder. I think its very user - reader friendly and use is very often in therapy.

5 out of 5 stars Anatomy of a Food Addiction.......2005-09-19

If you want to understand why your eating habits are out of control, this is the book which explains it! This book has really helped me to understand why I am so addicted to sugar and flour, and explains how one needs to abstain from these foods. I still have to rely on O.A. in order to keep the motivation to eat properly, but I come back to this book on a regular basis to keep my mind focused on why I keep returning to bad eating habits and how I am not to blame. GREAT BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars Lifesaving Information!.......2005-03-01

Ironically, it was a negative comment written by another reviewer that told me this was the book for me! They had mentioned the author's prescription of abstinence from sugar and white flour products to stop the carvings. You see, I know firsthand that this is a necessary and extremely effective step in combating food cravings and the binges that characterize a food addiction. (By the way this is not an "Atkins like" diet in any way, shape or form - you are still allowed heatlhy whole grains, fruits etc.) I just didn't know WHY it worked for me. For more than a year, I abstained from eating white flour products, fruits and sugars due to actual food allergies and as a wonderful side effect, all of my cravings for and obsessive thoughts about these foods ceased completely. I was no longer driven to or dependent on food. However, because I wasn't aware of why I had been so dependent on food in the past, I allowed myself to have a slice of cake on my birthday which turned out to be a huge mistake. Bam! I was right back in and I haven't been able to abstain ever since. After reading this book, I uncovered the other more important and insidious reason for my inability to regain abstinence - namely, the emotional issues that drive me to food. This aspect of the book, is the most important of all. This book feels like it was written for me. I've had every thought, every feeling Dr. Katherine relates. Her writing exposes my inner life, a life I thought was mine alone but in reality most, if not all, overeaters share the same experiences! Do yourself, your body, your soul a favor and buy this book! Thank you Anne Katherine!

5 out of 5 stars Changed My Life.......2005-02-21

This book is a step-by-step guide to freedom! After years of dieting with varied levels of success, I finally discovered what the real problem was. She not only explains the chemistry of addiction but gives concrete, practical steps to achieve abstinence and freedom. I can't recommend it highly enough.

We already worry that our food makes us fat, dull, disease-prone, and sleepy. Now we have to worry that it also makes us crazy. According to certified clinical nutritionist Carol Simontacchi, the food industries that give us packaged, processed, artificially flavored, chemical-ridden, artificially colored, nutrient-stripped pseudo foods such as sodas, processed soups, sugared cereals, and fiberless bread "wantonly destroy our bodies and our brains, all in the name of profit." We Americans (adults and children) eat 200 pounds of sugar and artificial sweeteners each year. Our children's test scores and grades drop. We become violent, illogical, moody, depressed, drug-addicted, and crazy. The reason, according to the author, who is pursuing a doctorate in brain nutrition, is that we're starving our brains with lack of nutrition.

This isn't a process that begins when teenagers start snacking on sodas, chips, and ice cream. Rather, this nutrition deprivation starts in the womb: mom doesn't get the right nutrition (essential fatty acids, high-quality protein, unrefined carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water), so baby is born already brain-nutrient deficient, says the author. Infant formulas, processed baby food, and sugared cereals exacerbate the problem through the stages of childhood, with kids not getting the nutrition their growing brains need. Simontacchi also skewers prepared foods, additives, over-processed grains, school vending machines, and fast-food chains.

This book isn't only about children. Starbucks and its ilk get a "Crazy Maker Award" for "encouraging us to self-medicate with stimulating beverages that mask the symptoms of nervous system and adrenal exhaustion." We adults are genuinely fatigued, but instead of getting the sleep and rest we need, we succumb to the "marketing hype of sophisticated companies that convinces us that self-medicating with an addictive substance is the answer to our energy crisis." You may not accept all Simontacchi's views, but once you've read this book, you won't reach for a café latte or feed your kids sugar-frosted cereal with the same complacency. --Joan Price

Book Description

An unprecedented and impeccably reported look at how American food manufacturers and their "products" may be endangering our minds.

In The Crazy Makers, nutritionist Carol Simontacchi reveals that brand-name consumer food producers may be putting items on the market that redefine what we commonly think of as "food." From infant formulas to supposedly health-conscious packaged meals, these pseudo-foods may be causing chemical levels in the brain to rise to alarming heights.

Based on new research, epidemiological evidence, and a formal study of schoolchildren's eating habits conducted by Simontacchi, The Crazy Makers will open your eyes as it identifies how the latest food products may be driving you crazy-and will tell you what you can do about it. Notes. Index.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on nutrition in today's world........2006-08-10

The book describes the essentials to providing excellent nutrition for babies, children and teens specifically when it comes to brain development and health. It details the dangers of allowing the food industry to decide what your kids should eat. If you want your kids or future kids to thrive and succeed in life, this is book hits the importance of doing it right from the start.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-11-26

I really enjoyed this book.
I have been saying forever that sugar and formula is what's wrong with health and kids now a days.
I think everyone needs to read this book, and really rethink what you are feeding your kid.
I wonder if the food company is in cahoots with the entertainment business, working together to the dumbing down of America?

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2005-11-11

Not only does it get the sensationalist words "crazy" and "destroying' worked into the title, but it also ties them into other such sensitive topics as (1) our brains and, (2) our children. The only other things it could have mentioned is (1) the elderly, (2) kitty-cats, (3) puppies, (4) rainbows, (5) gumdrops and sugarplums, and, (6) Jesus. Maybe the author can re-think the title to work all those things in to make it more dramatic and appealing to the masses.

But, as for the book itself, I was amazed. I had no idea that my brain was being so adversely impacted by the food industry, particularly when I have so strictly followed Dr. Colbert's diet outlining what Jesus would eat and how Jesus would cook it. Nevertheless, it seems the food industry has it in for me, and for you (and for themselves). Apparently though, the food industry, while destroying our brains, is only *harming* our children. Their brains are being left intact. Thank God for that. We have to have some generation to look after us. But, I'll admit, I'll never look at a box of Ding-Dongs again.

5 out of 5 stars The Crazy Makers: How the Food Industry Is Destroying Our Brains and Harming Our Children.......2005-09-30

I Loved this book. I bought it on a whim at a local natural foods store and have
bought a few more to give to my friends and family. It is a very complete, yet readable
handbook on all the additives, chemicals and such that is put into our foods. It is definitely something I would recommend to anyone with a passion or interest in the
foods they eat.

2 out of 5 stars In search of the real info.......2007-08-30

While there may be a lot of good information here, it is inseperably mixed with a lot of personal opinion and drum-beating. Instead of just compiling reports from qualified MDs, PhDs, etc., Carper regretfully goes one level further and INTERPRETS these studies for us. Unfortunately, she is not qualified to do that. Her background is not in medicine or health, she is just a writer. She wants to sell books, so she becomes super-positive with all her "analyses". Sorry, Ms Carper, your embellished opinions are not objective, are not scientific, are often flat WRONG, are not separated from the factual information, and thereby destroy what might have been an informative book. I suggest Holford's "Optimum Nutrition for the Mind", or Stoll's "Omega 3 Connection" for those interested in more science and less hype.

5 out of 5 stars A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste.......2005-08-21

Let me cut to the chase, there are numerous supplements you can take to keep your mental facilities in top working order, but if you are looking for the ONE thing you can do that will provide the best overall results - take a multivitamin daily.

Ms. Carper has provided another fine study of the current research (circa 2000) related to the human brain and the effect of various supplements or lack thereof. If there is one complaint that I have about the book, it is that it is dated, continued research in the field would argue for an updated edition of the book.

The four sections of the book cover the workings of the brain, what to eat, what supplements to take and how to prevent vascular problems from affecting your brain. True to her usual form the author presents the research for each topic, broken up by nutrient or supplement, further broken down by details of the impact on the brain of a shortage and the research data to support claims that the nutrient or supplement may correct the problems, and how much to take for full effect.

The discussions are intriguing in that the author's conclusions require so little action on the reader's part to correct or prevent the stated neurological problems (topics range from depression to aggression to forgetfulness to age related problems like Alzheimer's).

One of the reasons I bought this book was because I was heading back to grad school (in my 40s), and I wasn't quite sure I was up to it. Having completed 13 semester credits in biological and chemical sciences over two 6 week summer sessions with a flawless 4.0 grade average, I can say that I feel at the top of my mental game and ready for admission to grad school. My current set of supplements include: a multivitamin with minerals, coenzyme Q10, Omega 3 fish oil, ginko biloba and grape seed extract.

Getting back to my initial statement, unless you have a perfect diet (be honest), you need a multivitamin with minerals to ensure that you are providing the basic nutrition for a healthy brain, once you are there you can look into the other supplements for further improvement. P-)

5 out of 5 stars Review of "The Miracle Brain"........2005-08-02

This is an excellent book. It is a "must have" item for anyone wanting to improve the functioning of their brain. I purchased one copy of his book for myself and another copy for my best friend. I feel certain that I made a vey wise choice in purchasing "The Miracle Brain"

5 out of 5 stars Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper.......2004-01-10

A main thesis of this work is that food can impact the brain
either favorably or unfavorably. The author explains that
men have brains that tend to shrink faster than women.
In addition, high blood pressure tends to reduce brain size.
Stress also damages the brain. There are juices which have a
positive impact on brain chemistry; namely, grapefruit,
tomato, orange and blueberries. Cranberry, spinach, kale,
strawberries and plums have maximum ORAC units. Raisins and
prunes are top anti-oxidants. Spinach, beet greens, tomato,
orange juice, cantaloupe, squash, sweet potato and avocado help
to minimize strokes. B vitamins and Vit C help to keep the
brain young and preserve cerebrospinal fluid. Selenium
boosts the brain and a deficiency can upset brain function.
The stone age diet is best for people. It consists of 65%
veggies, fruits, nuts and honey with 35% lean meat, eggs and
fish. DHA is found in seafood and EPA is found in a fish diet.
Linoleic acid is found in leafy green veggies and olive oil.
Brain fat busters are saturated animal fat, whole milk, butter
and cheese. This book will be a good addition to any personal
health library

5 out of 5 stars Superb guide to your brain, health, nutrition, lifestyle.......2003-12-19

This book is a treasure chest of extremely valuable information on how to preserve your mental capabilities and to protect yourself from disease with the right diet and the right supplements and amounts of them. Did you know that people taking vitamin C or E supplements are shown in general NOT to develop Alzheimer's? Did you know that blueberries, strawberries and spinach are brain-savers? Did you know that you can control and possibly prevent insulin resistence by eating a low "glycemic index" diet. Did you know that eating foods equalling 5500 ORACs a day will protect your memory and motor control? (A cup of black tea brewed for five minutes contains 1200 ORACs.) Did you know that vigorous walking for an hour, five days a week will lower your risk of stroke by about half (p. 331), as will fruits and veggies and tea (p. 323)?
Jean Carper discusses the importance of Omega-3 oils in fish for pregnant women who want to optimize their children's mental capacities, as well as for the rest of us. She discusses the B vitamins, folic acid and the other, and their vital importance.
She gets down to specifics with doses to take and appropriate combinations.
I heartily recommend this book. If you buy only one book this year, buy this one.
The writing is energetic and enjoyable. The glycemic index and ORAC tables contain invaluable compilations for charting an optimal daily diet. I posted copies on my refrigerator door!
I've given this book to several people, all of whom cherish it.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking information.......2007-03-25

I'm interested in unusual therapies, and know someone who has a child with multiple disabilities including a seizure disorder. I found a videotape about this diet at a rummage sale a few years ago, and while it makes the diet sound relatively simple, this book says otherwise and goes into detail about people who are good candidates for the diet and those who are not. Many testimonials and case studies are presented as well.

The woman I know was given this option and said, "We don't want to starve our child." After reading this book, I can see where she was coming from. The restricted calories don't concern me as much as the fluid restriction, which could potentially be very dangerous and the book addresses this problem as well.

For the proper person, this diet could potentially be a lifesaver and it's worth trying if all factors are appropriate.

5 out of 5 stars The Ketogenic Diet 4th Edition 2007.......2007-03-20

This book contains up to date information in relation to the ketogenic diet and other seizure control options that is also easy to read and understand by non professional people.

5 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended as a top alternative to medication for kids with epilepsy........2007-02-08

If you have or know a child with epilepsy, THE KETOGENIC DIET: A TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN AND OTHERS WITH EPILEPSY is a 'must' for your consideration: it offers a solution beyond medication which provides a doctor-supervised diet high in fat and low in carbs and proteins, which limits calories - and is proven to control seizures. There've been many advances in the field, so this updated 4th edition is essential even for library holdings with prior editions. Besides the latest research, this book includes a new section on the Atkins diet and other alternative nutritional therapies. Very highly recommended as a top alternative to medication for kids with epilepsy.

-A clear and easy-to-follow introduction to the principles of good childhood nutrition and information on all the latest science on brain-boosting foods

-Practical, kid-tested advice on incorporating the essential foods into a child-friendly diet

-Special "brain-box" features to explain the health-giving, mind-boosting properties of each of the featured dishes

-Teaches how to recognize foods containing additives and pesticides, and how to choose healthy, nutritious ingredients

-Advice on using diet to control and avoid behavioral problems such as ADHD

Graimes divides the book into two sections. The first is full of advice, bursting with color photographs and helpful scientific facts as palatable for adult readers as the recipes are for their children. The second part covers more than 100 recipes for every meal of the day, parties, picnics, and plenty of delicious snacks. And the perforated at-a-glance weekly menu planner can be torn out for posting on the fridge.

5 out of 5 stars How to CURE "mental illness".......2005-12-24

I have been researching the drug industry and psychiatry over the past year and have attended a Harvard Medical School seminar to see what is being taught concerning psychopharmacology. What I have learned is that for generations, orthomolecular physicians like Dr. Philpott have been curing mental illness by recognizing that brain malfunctions are caused by medical problems such as thyroid, kidney, and sleep disorder problems, an immune disorder cerebral allergy, metal toxicity, Candida infestation and enzyme and nutritional imbalances such as essential fatty acids deficiency (malnourishment). Biochemical testing can assist in determining underlying causes. Even Harvard's Dr. Stoll, who receives compensation from about ten different drug companies, recommends fish oil to provide essential Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins as an effective treatment for depression.
According to Prescription for Nutritional Healing P. 448, A thyroid condition can cause fatigue, mood swings and depression, P. 153: An allergy is an inappropriate response by the body's immune system to a substance that is not normally harmful. P. 157: Cerebral allergies cause swelling of the lining of the brain. P. 154: Persons between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five are the most allergy-prone.
Entire food families can cause allergic reactions in susceptible people. Repeated headaches, or schizophrenic, violent, or aggressive reactions, can be an indicator. Foods such as corn, wheat, rice, dairy products, and chocolate, and certain food additives, are the most common offenders but chemicals such as petrochemicals or other substances, like mold can also cause serious problems. Other manifestations of food allergies are; acne, arthritis, asthma, chest and shoulder pains, colitis, depression, fatigue, food cravings, headaches, hemorrhoids, insomnia, intestinal problems, muscle disorders, obesity, sinus problems, ulcers, and unexplained dramatic weight changes. The list goes on and on. Allergies can also affect children diagnosed as Autistic or exhibiting ADHD.
To cure, orthomolecular physicians have patients stop eating what they are allergic to. These physicians remove toxic metals from the body, rid the body of Candida, and provide supplements as needed. The best book I have seen so far on this topic is this book, Brain Allergies. A proper diet is also wise to fuel the brain with essential nutrients and exercise provides oxygen to cells and assists in removing toxins via sweat glands.
Unfortunately, the drug industry has such an influence on psychiatrists that it is still common for them to recommend superficial physical testing (if any at all), ignore the results, and rather than determine the cause and fix the problem, they try to cover up symptoms with mega doses of drugs that cause damage and sometimes disability. One of many adverse effects from psychiatric medicine is the neurotransmitter brain damage imbalance known as Parkinsonism where a person can no longer walk or talk normally due to extreme slowness. According to Merck's web site, the disorder's pathophysiology is inhibition of dopaminergic system due to blockage of dopaminergic receptors by antipsychotic drugs. An excellent, very alarming book is Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs, which was written by a psychiatrist who stopped practicing psychiatry after seeing drug damage. According to this publication, drug trials are not unbiased, these drugs are no more effective than placebos, and they cause brain damage. A similar publication adds information concerning how to stop taking drugs, Your Drug May Be Your Problem.
If psychiatric drugs could cure, you would be able to take them and stop. Instead, drugs mask and/or change symptoms, they can be addictive, and they have serious side effects. Drugs are toximolecular. They are substances foreign to the body, in sub-lethal (and sometimes lethal) amounts. They should be used only as a last resort, emergency measure. Other treatments also cause permanent harm, such as electric shock that is well known in the industry for causing permanent memory loss. Harvard Medical School is now offering continuing education regarding using magnetic therapy. However the strength they are using is much higher than what Dr. Philpott used with success - so that will probably harm as well.
As a health consumer, you have to be your own best advocate.
The reason I am so concerned about this topic is that I know someone who was nearly disabled by antipsychotic drugs until Dr. Shaw with Great Plains Lab in Kansas (www.greatplainslaboratory.com) called with results from biochemical testing done. The lab tests showed this person is allergic to dairy and eggs, was toxic in aluminum, had a Candida problem and other imbalances. After the treatment plan outlined above, this person was able to get a job - cured!
I believe that all "mental" problems are caused by physical, medical problems. The fact the problems have not been discovered does not mean they do not exist. Treatments should not separate the mind from the body.
Just one person mentally distressed, disabled by drugs, and not able to work, will cost at least two million dollars over a lifetime, so this is an issue that impacts all of us financially as well as ethically.

    5 out of 5 stars Really helped a lot!.......2005-06-20

This book was very helpful in explaining what was going on with my daughter's dairy allergy. Now I finally have some confirmation of what I have been observing and know what to do to help her.

The bit about any food, not just carbohydrates causing diabetic reactions was very interesting and I'd recommend reading it to anyone suffering diabetes.

Also, I've worked with the homeless mentally ill and wish the psychiatrists in the programs they are in would read this. These poor people are not responding to conventional medicine, and what these men wrote could be of invaluable help to them.

The book also talks about a cure for tardive diskinesia in two days using nutrients. More people should know about that.

It was the first to really explain vitamin C therapy and how it works. I was glad to see Linus Pauling redeemed. After reading it I looked it up online and found a wealth of information, including a charity trying to give free vitamin C to people with HIV in South Africa. I guess a lot of other people believe in vitamin C, also!

I almost put it down when I got to the part about using magnets to calm agitated people with mental illness, but was really glad I persevered, the rest of the book was well written and incredibly informative.

    5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary.......2000-04-05

As a Chinese herbal practitioner, I have recommended this book to several clients who have autistic children. In almost every case, there has been a marked improvement in the child's situation. The book details not only the science and theory behind Dr. Philpott's approach, but more importantly spends a lot of time discussing practical implementation. Conventional western medicine still tends to ignore the dramatic impact our diets can have on the mental/emotional aspect of our lives; BRAIN ALLERGIES makes a very significant contribution to the growing literature around the old and very true proverb: "we are what we eat." If you're dealing with a child with emotional and/or cognitive difficulties, PLEASE read this book!
