1 out of 5 stars Not for Healthy Relationships.......2007-10-06

I bought this book because I thought it would have tips on how to keep a marriage fun and exciting after a baby and maybe some tips on how to stay sane. But really this book just teaches you how to argue better. It had nothing to do with adjusting after such a big change. Well, there was maybe one chapter toward the end. The rest of it dealt with working through issues couples had regardless of their parental status.

5 out of 5 stars worth reading & good tools for prevention.......2007-07-10

I am a fan of John Gottman's work and know that it is respected and backed up with research. This book was definitely worth the read. I chose it to help prevent problems since we don't have any children yet. I haven't found anything else out there like it and would recommend it to friends. It's nice to know there are some guidelines out there for something as specific as spousal relationships after bringing home a baby.
They share some interesting cases and give specific examples that I found comforting and useful. For example, using humor when asking your husband to help with the dishes is much nicer than the sarcasm I would normally use.
Also, I was pleased to see that they inform their readers of the importance of their marital relationship before and after birth on a child's emotional & social development. Very compelling!
My only somewhat negative observation is about the exercises at the end of the chapters. They are a great idea, but I don't know if I could get my husband to participate. I'm just grateful to have their suggestions as I enter this stage of life and will introduce the info to my husband if the opportunity presents itself.

5 out of 5 stars This will SAVE your marriage! A Must READ!!!!.......2007-05-26

I am a certified labor doula and I bought this book so I could help my doula clients. I didn't realize how helpful it would be to me as well. I wanted to be able to provide my clients with some good information about how things might be after their baby is born. IT's not an easy transition in many ways. Although delightful, the roller coaster of emotions both parents go through can be rough and lead to divorce. I can't tell you how many times I have gone to a postpartum visit only to see my clients sitting separately. The dad not responding to mom's requests and mom not talking to dad but talking AT him. I know them because we met prenatally and seeing the transition is astounding. The once happy couple, who would do anything for each other while pregnant, is now sad. Dad is no longer focused on mom and wanting to make her happy. Mom isn't really doing much to make dad happy. They are two people living in the same home but they are slowly losing each other. Sleep deprivation and an overwhelming sense of responsibility on both parents is splitting them apart. What's worse is, we don't think about how this will affect the baby.

When couples think about how life will change when baby comes, they often think about how it will affect them. They don't think about how these changes will affect their baby; especially in the long run. This book describes those changes and offers suggestions and support on how to get through them. Dad's typically withdraw and I thought it was very normal. It is, however, if dad withdraws from baby and for significant periods, this will have a profound effect on the baby at the present time and in the long run. We must also think about the baby not just us.

I heard an MD speak about Bringing Baby Home last year. My son was almost 3 at the time. I was shocked when I learned about this transition and the stages that we go through. The biggest reason...we went through each transition! It was like I was reliving what happened. Learning that what we experienced was normal, that everyone goes through it but not everyone survives it. I was able to rejoice in the fact that we were in the last stage and we were going to survive.

It is a rough road this "Transition to Parenthood." Don't let people think you need to be happy when all you are feeling is frustration and resentment. BUY THIS BOOK! Read it in pregnancy and read it again after the baby is born. Go to the classes if you have a local educator. IF you want to survive your marriage or relationship after Bringing Baby Home, YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Parents to Be.......2007-03-16

I'm 7m pregnant and my husband and I are extremely excited about our first baby, we are always looking for ways to keep our marriage on track. We are not experiencing any problems, We approach things in more preventative measures, it never hurts to keep educating ourselves. We have been reading this book and doing the excersises so when the baby does arrive and we run into issues we know how to tackle them. I recommend this book to anyone expecting. It serves as a great tool in relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Straightforward, realistic, and useful advice - a good read!.......2007-03-09

This book will definitely help couples keep their marriages on track post-baby if both spouses read it, and I'd recommend reading it BEFORE baby arrives and talking about it together. That way, when you're sleep deprived and your life is upside down due to having a new baby in your life and family, you might remember some of the good advice about how to communicate with each other and take care of each other. I really liked the many examples from couples studied, and the research-based nature of the recommendations. You probably won't be surprised at the "no-duh" nature of much of this book, since caring for your spouse and marriage really boils down to communicating well with each other, thinking about the other person, and treating them with respect and love. Kindness begets kindness! Nonetheless, it's helpful to read the data supporting the recommendations and to have these messages reinforced for you and your spouse. Good luck!

The Secret Language of Relationships adopts the format of its bestselling predecessor, The Secret Language of Birthdays, and the compendious collection of combinations that follows proves the book's assertion that "A relationship is a rather mysterious and amazing third entity, one that can come to lead an existence independent of the will or desire of its two partners.... in certain cases a relationship can prove far stronger than either individual, leading us to believe that a certain kind of synergy is at work."

Well-organized, packed with fascinating "personality" information, and replete with snapshots (on every page) of famous couples--whether colleagues, spouses, or lovers--The Secret Language of Relationships is also simple to use. A glance at the two-page chart at the beginning of the book determines your birthday "period." Next, find the period of the person who interests you--friend, parent, child, lover, or mate. The ensuing relationship dynamics are named colorfully and aptly: "Peas in a Pod," "Uncommon Intimacy," "Flexible Structures," "Few Dull Moments," and "Few Antipathies."

Describing 1,176 possibilities, The Secret Language of Relationships sheds light on the classic questions--the hows and whys of chemistry in relationships. Is there a prime ingredient for love at first sight, a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of it all? An entertaining exploration of the very thing we cannot do without--each other--this wonderful volume explains why we feel the way we do about the people in our lives, and how--if necessary--to make it better.

Book Description

The Secret Language of Relationships shows how astrology can craft a relationship profile between any two individuals born during any two weeks of the year. The result is an indispensable guide to getting the most out of every relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Relationships Book.......2007-09-21

Been eyeing this book for a LONG time and I finally got it. No regrets. Brilliant info and creepy that it's sooo right on.

5 out of 5 stars Relationships.......2007-08-30

The book is very informative. Very detailed and easy to follow. It is well laid out and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Unique, Fascinating, and Useful.......2007-07-21

I've been "religiously" using this book as a reference ever since I stumbled upon it almost two years ago. Family, co-workers, women who I find attractive, friends, even enemies (if you think you have none, you may be kidding yourself LOL). I've looked them all up. Results? Spooky! Astonishing! Amazing!

I'm not sure why certain people complain. Sure the book is general. A more specific study would be too heavy to hold, and would take more time than the octogenarian author has left! Nothing new? Ha! You want something new? Read Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss! Then there's the comment that the included relationship studies are negative. That's not true. Each relationship study contains a vignette or two as well examples of both positive and negative features and potentials. Perhaps the nay-sayers tend to focus upon the negative. On the other hand... negative relationships tend to be the easiest to understand and write about. Those that are positive, and sublime tend to be unique; and they may be succinctly descried only by inspired poetry, if at all. It's similar to the way that it's easy to smear paint around into an interestingly repulsive Oobleck-like image, but much more difficult to create a beautiful masterpiece.

I did notice that while some of the relationship studies are totally spot-on and amazingly so, others seem rather bland or dry, which I attribute to the fact that they don't touch on things that appeal to me or that I understand. If I was a more perfectly-rounded human being, I suspect that I would empathize with those as well.

This is a great book that you may use to create beautiful relationships by using the knowledge it brings you. Pick up a copy today! (Buy a used copy, here at Amazon, if you're a tightwad like me!) Greets to Ms. Julie, who I hope will find this book as useful as I have.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Astrology Books on the Market.......2007-06-14

I've studied astrology for over 15 years, and this book is definitely one of the best. Sun-sign astrology is the first step to understanding astrology, and this book is a must-have for anyone interested in exploring it more in-depth. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Hit or miss..........2007-04-04

Ehhh... I'm just not real impressed with this one. First of all - splitting the larger sun sign categories into subgroups is kinda nice, but also kinda vague. It's essentially a re-working of the standard sun sign stereotypes, and if you're interested in astrology at all, you know them already. Don't get me wrong - it's not *bad.* There's no wrong information, it's passably accurate (for astrology.) I can see how it would be very helpful for those on cusps, and even for the rest of us, it's occasionally got some new info (this book, for instance, is the first one to accurately point out some quieter aspects of my personality that go against the Aries norm.) It's just not enough to get excited over, and most people will get the same level of accuracy or better by just going whole hog and getting a star chart done.

Secondly, and more irritatingly, the actual relationship pairings were astonishingly scattershot. I think it would have been easier to deal with if they'd ALL just been laughably wrong, but no - after slogging through, say, 4 or 5 descriptions that could have been describing total strangers (because they certainly weren't describing me and my people), I'd hit upon something like "Confidential Projects," which was just a spot-on explanation of the vibe between me & my brother. What do you do with a book like that? (Also? As has been noted by other reviewers, the book really is amazingly negative about almost every relationship pairing. If I were to take it seriously, I'd be huddled in the corner now, wide-eyed, whimpering "nobody loves me and I have no real friends!" Sheesh.)

It leads me to one of two conclusions: 1) it really is scattershot - they're just throwing it at a wall and seeing what sticks; or, 2) they're actually on to something, but haven't worked out all the kinks yet. Which wouldn't be too bad, except that it's being published as a finished product, you know?

Final recommendation: pass. If you're reading for entertainment, there are more entertaining astrology books out there; if you're a serious student, there are more thorough and accurate books. If you've got money to burn and don't mind weeding through the stuff that's superfluous and the stuff that's just inaccurate to find the few true additions to this field that this book makes, it might make a decent addition to round out a library. Just please don't be fooled into thinking this is the be-all and end-all of relationship astrology!

5 out of 5 stars new quilter.......2007-03-26

I made my first three quilts as baby gifts from this book. Instructions are clear and very easy and end product looks heirloom.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for babies!.......2006-10-22

I confess that I love making baby quilts. And it isn't because I know a lot of women having kids (though quite a few of them _do_ seem to be popping out babies recently). Baby quilts are small projects that you can finish in a short period of time; you can machine quilt them without feeling as though you're wrestling with an angry critter. They let you explore new techniques or colors, and if you decide that you *hate*, say, doing pieced borders, you haven't taken on an obligation that you can't bear to finish. Because they're small, you are likely to have all the fabric for one already in your stash.

Best of all: if you're not yet an accomplished quilter, it's really easy to justify making a baby quilt. You can tell yourself that a baby is just going to spit up on it anyway -- so don't worry too much if it isn't perfect.

And that's just the advantages to the quilter. The parents are always awestruck by the gift, because you made it for their kid. (Despite that "spit up" promise to myself, one gift recipient hung it on the wall of the baby's room. Oh well; she's far away and I don't have to look at all the mistakes I know I made.)

Of course, you don't need to have a baby involved at all. If you don't choose nursery fabrics or pastel colors, these quilts -- and the set in this lovely book by Alex Anderson -- make very nice wall hangings.

Now that I've convinced you that making a baby quilt is a good idea, let me exhort you to consider this book by Alex Anderson. I love every one of her books, because her tone is so reassuring and her designs clearly explained.

At least half of the dozen projects listed here are suitable for beginners, and she gives good advice about color choices (i.e. choose a focus fabric and then pick accompanying colors based on that). This probably shouldn't be the _very_ first quilting book you pick up, or at least you should choose another one to accompany this one; while there's some "getting started" info in the front, isn't enough to give you confidence on the basic techniques. However, even a beginner should be able to whip through one of these projects in a weekend, maybe too.

Anderson likes scrappy quilts rather more than I do. In these projects she doesn't indulge that preference as much as in her other books; while some of these quilts call for "assorted blue prints to total 1 1/4 yards" she has one quilt with just two fabrics (admittedly it's an advanced one with a scalloped edge), and a few more that call for only 4 or 5 fabrics.

One quilt uses the gloriously soft "Minkee" fabric; it's gorgeous but (speaking from experience here) the Minkee fabric is really expensive. Yet, if you touch it, you're going to want to sew with it!

As you can probably tell, I like this book a lot. If you have any fondness for scrappy quilts (or *really* want to use up some of those fat quarters you've been hoarding), this is an excellent book for the purpose. If, however, you want baby quilt projects with a lot more solid colors and a reason to use spiffy fabric panels, you should check out "Quilts for Baby: Easy As ABC." In fact, I'd recommend both.

4 out of 5 stars Project for every level of quilter!.......2006-05-12

If you're one of Alex Anderson's fans and can't get enough of her on the television program, Simply Quilts, you have an opportunity to experience twelve timeless projects for the nursery, and get a "snapshot" of Alex as a child at the same time.

New quilters will appreciate Alex Anderson's Baby Quilts with Love for several reasons. First there is a section that gives basic quilting information. It includes everything from choosing and preparing fabrics; rotary cutting "need-to-know" information; how to pin, piece, press, remove stitches; quilt finishing techniques; and the care of the finished quilt.

Second, the information provided is accompanied by drawings to help you process the written information visually. And thirdly, there are some fast, fun and spectacular baby quilt patterns.

The strength of this particular quilt book is that is accurately reflects the skill level necessary to complete the project. Everything that is needed to complete the quilt is presented in a clear, concise manner. Quilters are provided with a list of materials and step-by-step directions with which they are able to create that special quilt for the little ones you love.

Experienced quilters will enjoy the interesting projects and will be able to put their own touches on the patterns.

Armchair Interviews says: It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or an expert quilter, there are projects for everyone in Alex Anderson's Baby Quilts with Love. My favorite is Tree of Life and you'll have your own favorite.

4 out of 5 stars A buffet of ideas for coping and communicating.......2007-03-21

The book has a "buffet" of ideas of techinques for dealing with the stresses of infertility. Ideas include practical communication starters, and thought-provoking ways of looking at your partner's and your own needs and communication styles. Some ideas I left on the buffet table. With some others, I piled my plate high!

Useful for anyone who is just starting out or well along the infertility treatment path, and is finding it stressful (and you'd be hard pressed not to).

5 out of 5 stars Welcome, With Love.......2007-04-06

This book is fantastic! I've read it to both my first born and now my second born to prepare them for the birth of their sibling. I believe it really helped my son, who even at 3-years-old wasn't bothered at all by seeing his sister born and just quietly watched with his daddy. My son was never jealous of his sister as I had heard often happens with a new baby, instead my son quickly bonded with his new best friend and he is now excited about his new sibling on the way. I recommend this book to any mom-to-be or anyone interested in home birth. This does a great job portraying a natural birth and is now my gift to any mom expecting a second or third baby.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful way to introduce natural homebirth to children :-).......2007-03-20

This is a superbly illustrated book that tells the story of a homebirth in a rural setting from a child's point of view. It is relaxed and introduces the idea of birth free from fear ~ something this culture desperately needs more of. :) It truly is a joyous read, and extremely touching for those of us who have experienced this particular wonder ~ peaceful, warm, and life-changing. And what is even more fabulous about THIS book is that it is one of the only books about welcoming a new baby that is not afraid to show the REALITY of birth ~ mom yelling, walking around, leaning on her Support Team... it's not just another book that shows the mama disappearing and then mysteriously reappearing with a little bottle-fed bundle of blobby baby goodness. Instead, the entire family sees the baby emerging from his mother... then baby, messy and wrinkled and beautiful... and then mama putting him to her breast. And to top it all off, they co-sleep. Absolutely a fantastic read and a needed addition to any Natural Family home library.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this book.......2007-02-14

Beautiful pictures of family and mom and baby. The story being narrated by the soon-to-be big brother was very sweet and perfect for my own son as I am due to have another baby soon. The birth was a perfect example of a natural homebirth, with a midwife and cozy family setting. One of the best childbirth/homebirth children's stories around.

1 out of 5 stars Watching your little brother get born is gross!.......2007-02-08

It is not like in this book at all. Mom was not fully dressed and there was poop and blood and way more cyring than this book has. Don't want to see the next one get born! No way! Locking myself in my room.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-02-02

Beautiful book normalizing homebirth for children. We loved reading it to all our children present for homebirths. They also show baby nursing, and the family bed and talk about the placenta. The illustrations are very real and breathtaking.

    Story Behind the Book

“As a Gen Xer who graduated from high school in 1989, the way I parent is different from the generations who’ve gone before me. I want to do it all—find God’s purpose for my life, impact my community, support my spouse, and provide my children every opportunity available to them. My generation is serious about parenting—just look at all we expect from our children and ourselves! This book offers solutions to our unique questions and confirms that we can ‘parent right’—even if it looks nothing like the way our own parents did it. More importantly, this book focuses on seeking God’s Word and wisdom for answers to growing a new generation of God seekers.” — Tricia Goyer

If you can name the members of the "Brat Pack", wore leg warmers, or can still recite the lyrics to a Cyndi Lauper song, then this book is for you. Children of the 1980s are fondly referred to as Generation X. Tricia Goyer's book Generation NeXt Parenting explores the parenting styles of this generation. Tricia's insight from her own childhood lead her to change her parenting style to separate her from her baby boomer parents. This book is easy to pick up and start reading from where you left off. She has a style of writing, which incorporates original text, Biblical reference, quotes from other parents, and 156 other cited authors. She is able to bring each chapter together with an 80's song lyric which brought back a lot of my teen memories. In this day and age we are inundated with an overwhelming amount of how-to books. However, this book offers a practical approach to parenting with a study guide to develop your parenting skills. I would recommend it to fellow Gen X'ers.

5 out of 5 stars Boomers: great gift for your daughter.......2007-06-26

Okay, I admit it--I'm not a Generation X mom; I'm a boomer mom, but the mom of several in the next generation and now the grandma of one and one-to-be. However, I found Tricia Goyer's book engaging, immensely helpful, understanding and just plain fun. I'm giving it to my daughter--who often feels the older parenting books just don't "fit." The author has done extensive research on parenting, has lived the ups and downs of being a mom to several kids (one from her teens), and has studied and incorporated the wisdom of scripture. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wise, Yet Never Pompous.......2007-02-06

For a few years now I've been a fan of Goyer's novels, with their realistic details, believable characters, and fast pacing. "Generation Next Parenting" is my first introduction to her non-fiction skills, and I'm suitably impressed. Here, too, Goyer deals with believable scenarios and honest struggles that Christian parents face.

I am the father of two daughters, ages 12 and 14. My wife and I have parented from the onset with the belief that we want to prepare our kids for life, not just protect them from it. Goyer finds that balance in this easy-to-read book, offering encouragement and philosophical angles to raising children. The pages are rich with spiritual insight, Scriptural foundations, and bits of humor. The quotes from Gen-X bands (Chicago, Gloria Estefan, Talking Heads, etc) add a light touch to these sometimes serious issues.

If you're struggling with your own generational parenting style, if you're wondering how well you are doing in God's eyes, or if you're just interested in a wise, yet never pompous, guide to "getting it right," then Tricia Goyer's book is for you. (And don't forget to check out here great fiction titles!)

4 out of 5 stars Thoughts from an Old GenXer.......2007-01-20

"Generation NeXt" turned out to be an intriguing read for me. I am on the line between Boomers and GenXers. Different sources have placed me in each camp, so if I'm a GenXer, I'm an old one.

My review will be from the perspective of an old GenXer with a teenager and young adult children. At times, as I read "Generation NeXt" I felt exactly that, old, but then I'd turn a few pages and identify with exactly what Tricia had penned.

Had I read this book when my children were younger, I think I would have gained insight leading to freedom from some guilt baggage I lugged around for far too many years.

Tricia's "Generation NeXt Parenting" is an encouraging pat on the back with plenty of spiritual and practical challenges tossed in. She doesn't take traditional problems and toss out advice on how to handle it as much as she covers the holistic issues of parenting and Christlikeness.

If you are looking for another parenting book that has an index and multiple tips on how to handle potty training, you won't find much in "Generation NeXt." However, if you desire to dig to underlying motivations on your part and your children's behaviors, there is help offered here. Of course, a lot of the advice is what we who call ourselves "Christian" know because it's preached from the pulpit, radio and other books. But it bears repeating until we "get" it. Tricia gives practical ideas for how to get on track or back on track spiritually so that you can be the parent God calls you to be.

I learned far more from "Generation NeXt" than I thought I would. Tricia peppers her thoughts with those from other struggling parents and facts regarding the unique building blocks GenXer's have been given.

I thought of several friends who have younger children who could benefit from this book and intend to get a copy to them.

5 out of 5 stars Generation Next Parenting, by Tricia Goyer.......2006-12-25

In today's generation, Christian parents face more obstacles than in any other point in history, perhaps even more so than those early Christians who hid their churches in their homes. With the advent of cable television, the Internet, cell phones and seemingly omnipresent advertisements telling our children - and let's be honest, us - how to look, act, dress, live, and what to believe in, Christians are engaged in all out warfare for not only for our own souls, but those of our children as well.

It doesn't help that Christianity is more splintered than it's ever been. A line has been drawn down the middle, and sides have been chosen: there are those on one side who deride "cultural sensitivity" and "Contemporary Worship" as "watered-down" and departing from Scriptural truth, and those on the other side who sneer at folks still reading their New King James Bibles, calling them "legalistic" and "not with the times". Popularity of speakers and spiritual self-help books abound, to the point where recently, when a young lady was threatened by a burglar, she pulled out - not the Bible - but rather a popular devotional book instead.

So, there a skirmishes all around, one side pointing the finger at another, but one thing that cannot be denied is the almost overwhelming crop of young parents and even younger children who feel isolated and cut off from God. They are desperately seeking answers in a post-modern age that refutes the sovereignty of answers, and many of them feel desperarely alone in their fight.

Generation Next Parenting, by award winning novelist Tricia Goyer, is an excellent devotional - not self-help book, not sweeping craze built on well-meaning concepts and snazzy catch phrases. It's an excellent tome of guidance for today's young parents. Founded on sound, Biblical principles - using only three or four different translations of the Bible, rather than fifty - Generation Next cuts right to the heart of what it means to be a young parent today; facing challenges and worldly opposition that our parents and grandparents never had to face.

A big selling point of this book is Goyer's frankness concerning her own mistakes and downfalls in life; she's open and honest - sometimes painfully so (but in an empathetic, good way). For me, as a young "Gen X'er" parent myself, this made quite an impact: I can't count how many times I've read a devotional book by some award winning speaker, pastor, or theologian, and thought to myself - "Hmm...must be nice living in your world." However, throughout Generation, I laughed, I winced, I sometimes felt stirred, (no, I didn't cry - because of course, we men never do that....sniff.)

The book's format is unique, as well - filled with relevant cultural quips and anecdotes, (those of us secret Duran Duran admirers will feel right at home), it's laid out more like a study guide or textbook, rather than a...well...really big book with lots of words that'll never get finished in the middle of work, doing the laundry, feeding the kids, changing the diapers, (which this man does do), and running the kids to every practice and event known to man. But don't worry, "busy bees" - simplify is one of this book's loudest hearkening calls.

On a final note, MEN should absolutely, positively read this book as well. Though it's written with a decided slant toward the female reader, for too long Christian men have distanced themselves from the "messier" side of leading the home spiritually (and I do mean "messier" literally; my father always said he changed the required amount of diapers a man was supposed to - one for me, and one for my sister!). This book gives practical, ground floor advice for all parents who desire their homes to be Godly ones, and should be on every Christian "Gen X'er's" shelf.

I am very impressed and pleased with "A Pocketful of Kisses". It is an excellent sequel to "The Kissing Hand" whether or not there is another baby expected into the family. The book is well written; the illustrations amazing!! I recommend this book to anyone with a special "little one" in their lives!

      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-01-07

This book is great especially if you have siblings in the household. Very touching story.

5 out of 5 stars The expanse of Love shared with children.......2006-05-20

When I first picked up this book, I was skeptical. Like most parents, I figured my 2 1/2 year old would tire of this book easily. But as I read it, the feelings of love that I have for my own two sons came to mind. I use it to teach a lesson about Love. As a mother, I never run out of kisses, hugs, affection--Love--for my two sons (or anyone else in our lives), but rather there is enough for all. I think that's a great lesson for kids to learn: that sharing is not competitive and there is room for all. I adore this book and my littlest one insists that I kiss his hand every night before he cuddles up with his bear. It's a very beautiful lesson very gracefully presented.

Everybody has a guilty secret--but most people tend to want to keep their skeletons well hidden in the closet. Not so Caroline Sullivan, a noted rock journalist in the U.K. In Bye Bye Baby, Sullivan stands up and shouts, "I was a Bay City Rollers fan."

Sullivan readily admits that the Rollers were not musical geniuses. Growing up in Millburn, New Jersey, on a diet of Led Zeppelin, the Who, and Peter Frampton, she recognized skilled musicianship. But she was a fan from the moment she saw BCR on television. "My entire Rollermaniac career was a struggle between knowing they were no Led Zep but loving them anyway."

For her obsession, Sullivan lacks even the excuse of extreme youth. Age 15 in 1975, when the Rollers made their first appearance in the U.S., she and her 16-, 17-, and 19-year-old friends--the self-proclaimed "Tacky Tartan Tarts"--were already older than the average Roller fan. But she was no average fan: "I love them desperately. For four years I lived for them. It's not a pretty story."

But it is a funny story. Bye Bye Baby tracks the history of the band, from their unassuming beginnings as the Saxons to the top of the U.S. charts with "Saturday Night"--and their inevitable decline. It also traces the antics of a group of dedicated fans who would do anything to get close to their idols--turning up at airports at the crack of dawn, wild car chases through city streets, elaborate subterfuges with hotels, airlines, and PR companies. "We were a bit like those dogs who chase cars--what would they do if they caught one?"

In the end, Sullivan did catch one--though only for a brief time (and she's gentlewoman enough never to expressly name which one). And she, her fellow Tarts, and the Rollers all moved on. But in Bye Bye Baby, Caroline Sullivan tells a funny and touching story--and pays homage to the band she once loved. --Sunny Delaney

      Book Description

Funny, poignant, and totally original--this story of one girl's love affair with the Bay City Rollers is a brilliant portrait of an era.

'I loved them desperately. For four years I lived for them. It's not a pretty story.'

Bye, Bye Baby is the true tale of a passionate obsession with possibly the most untalented bunch of musicians in the history of rock and roll. Even in their heyday, Leslie, Eric, Woody, Alan, and Derek of the Bay City Rollers were hideously uncool among everyone but fourteen-year-old girls. Their tartan knickerbockers and striped socks were sneered at, while their feeble teenybopper music was ridiculed.

And yet for Caroline Sullivan, a teenager in suburban New Jersey, these pasty-faced Scottish youths ruled her heart. Over four hot summers from 1975 to 1979, Sullivan and her band of lust-crazed friends, the Tacky Tartan Tarts, crisscrossed the United States in the Rollers' wake, staking out airports and hotels, tricking airline clerks and wheedling information out of bodyguards and PR companies-all in pursuit of that one big night.

Bye Bye Baby is a confessional memoir that invites the reader into some of Sullivan's most excruciatingly embarrassing moments. More than just an uproarious tale of teenage passion and teen-adulation, it is also an inspired exploration of the intimate bonds that tie teenage girls.

4 out of 5 stars Fun if you've ever had an all emcompassing teen star crush.......2006-08-19

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but once I got a couple of chapters into it, I had an epiphany. Caroline Sullivan and her Tacky Tartan Tarts could have been me and my friends had we had the means to follow any of the teen idols we adored. That's when for me the story stopped being about the BCR and started being about a slightly tilted mirror image of myself. If you go into to this thinking you're getting great insight into Leslie, Eric, Woody, Derek, Alan et al, then this isn't the book for you. If you want to remember the pure joy you experienced in loving these guys, and you're not afraid of taking off the blinders and seeing how they saw you in return, then get this book. Thanks, Caroline, for the memories and sharing the mirror!

5 out of 5 stars This is IT IT IT!.......2006-08-13

This is the book to read if you ever thought you'd found the rock star that you were meant to love for life! Fantastic tale of obsession and fear and joy and fun and desperation. Kudos for this honest and grand story.

      5 out of 5 stars Ahhh...the memories!.......2005-05-03

Okay...it was just great fun to read the memories of another Bay City Roller fan who actually had the resources and, well, nerve to go chase them down. It was a superb trip down memory lane ... well written, funny, sad, absolutely loved it. The Bay City Rollers took over two years of my life as a teenager ... if you liked them, you were nothing short of obsessed with them. Great job, Caroline ... thanks for such a wonderfully inspired read.

      4 out of 5 stars Absolutely mortifying.......2005-05-01

Well sure, hardcore BCR fans are going to hate this book-- but don't let that put you off this magnificently self-mortifying book. Caroline Sullivan nails the illogic of teen obsession so well I squirmed (wasn't BCR for me, fortunately-- it was the Who-- there but for the grace of god). She knew BCR were hacks and grossly untalented. She had otherwise great taste in music. And yet... and yet... Buy this book. Treasure it. And make sure to hand it down to your daughter when she gets caught up in the latest manufactured pop-- boy band-- hysteria juggernaut.
