Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book will help you connect the dots.......2007-09-06

This book is worth $100. Actually, it is priceless. If your child is language delayed, fussy and quirky, more mercurial than his/her peers...this book will help you identify these behaviors and discover the reasons behind your child's actions. Finally, you will understand the communication difficulties your child is experiencing and you will understand why he/she acts as they do.

This book is easy to read. You will recognize your child in the identified behaviors and you will discover that there may be multiple issues. Our child had been diagnosed with intermittent middle-ear fluid by a highly skilled team: ENT, Speech Pathologist and Audiologist. But it was this book that help us pinpoint the other behaviors and discover/address the Auditory Processing issue. Our team was satisfied with the diagnosis of Middle Ear Fluid for our child's language articulation issues...and this book is helping us get our child the help she needs.

4 out of 5 stars Great service........2007-02-14

I received this book and was really surprised to see what great shape it was in for a used book. It liked a new book. I will definitely keep using Amazon for my book needs.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-19

I found this book more descriptive than practical. The author dwealt on characteristics of the various communication problems kids may have, and lengthy case studies. The real let down was practical tips on what parents can do about it! The author generally refers the reader to specialists like a speech pathologist or a "special education teacher" or a psychologist. You could save money by not buying this book, and just get a referral to a specialist.

A disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to help your child on speech problems.......2006-08-14

This is a great resource for parents who are trying to figure out if their children have some sort of language problem. The author does an excellent job by naming every different problem and defining very clearly each concept. It is also good to find resources to help your child in case you do not have insurance that can cover your child's speech therapy. The cases presented are also very good since some of them can apply to your real life situation. If you are looking for a great tool to confirm language issues, you have it!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of great info and very easy to read!.......2002-08-28

I found this book to be an excellent and comprehensive guide. My daughter has a speech and language problem, but until reading this book I didn't realize how her listening problems were related. I showed the book to her teacher and we able to get an audiologist who could diagnose her auditory processing problem. Now she is getting the right help, and I will be eternally grateful to this author for writing this fabulous book. I wish I had read this when she was younger because perhaps I would have known what to look for. The symptoms are subtle in the younger child and become a little more obvious once they are trying to function in a classroom. I highly recommend this book!!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Parents of Children with Autism.......2006-07-17

When I discovered how expensive speech/language therapy cost for my 9-year-old son with autism, I began looking for resources and ways that I could improve his language in our home. I came across this book and it has been invaluable.

'Teach Me Language' is for children who have done some preliminary language work and have a fairly good foundation in labeling objects as well as pre-reading skills. The exercises are based on written words instead of pictures, so you will want to make sure your child is ready for that step.

The Manual features exercises on a variety of topics - everything from reading and comprehension skills to grammar basics to lifeskills like telling time and dealing with money to understanding emotions. In other words, the book features every area with which my son struggles. There is also an excellent chapter on social language and how to teach reciprocal conversations.

I found the layout of the manual to be just a bit confusing because it is not linear but that actually makes sense because the way our children learn isn't linear! Some children with autism or asperger's may be particularly strong in certain areas and weak in others.

Chapter 7 in the manual explains how to set up a language schedule for your particular child and you then go through the exercises and decide which ones to teach.

For parents, this book is easy to read, understand and implement. I highly recommend it, especially for children with autism who have emerging language and reading (decoding) skills.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for parents and professionals.......2003-07-18

This manual provides a tremendously useful resource for anyone involved in teaching conversational skills to individuals with language-based disabilities. There are pre-requisite skills a student must have, so this is probably not going to be the first book you start with if the student has few verbal skills. It is, however, the book that you will build up to and use extensively during that "middle" ground on the way to completely fluent conversational and language skills.

5 out of 5 stars This book couldn't be more on target!.......2000-07-24

Teach Me Language really zeros in on the areas of difficulty which our children with Autism and related disorders are up against. As a mother and educational advocate of a son with "high-functioning autism," I was thrilled to find this user-friendly educational tool that helps our kids "fill in the blanks." It provides a wonderful curriculum that can be used in collaboration by teacher/speech pathologist and parent, thereby offering our kids a very solid program. I've found the suggested instruction/therapy schedules (similar to lesson plans) particulary helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Teach Me Language.......2000-03-25

A Real Winner! This book is an excellent resource for parents and therapists who teach language to children with autism, Asperger's syndrome, and other related developmental disorders. Instructional friendly explanations, games, and cards teach language skills used in school and in life. The key feature that I really like about this book is that all information is very visual and structured. This book targets the areas of social language, general and functional knowledge, grammar and syntax, written expression, and academic concepts such as sequencing, problem-solving, time and money. Once a child has some basic vocabulary and can answer simple "what" and "where" questions, this book should be in your hands! Activities in this book are practical with children from kindergarten through the teenage years.

This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model." The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member. --Richard Farr

Book Description

THE NATIONAL AUDIO BESTSELLER

Procrastination. Disorganization. Distractibility. Millions of adults have long considered these the hallmarks of a lack of self-discipline. But for many, these and other problems in school, at work and in social relationships are actually symptoms of an inborn neurological problem: ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder.

Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients -- both adults and children -- Dr. Edward R. Hallowell and Dr. John J. Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment.

Driven to Distraction is a must listen for everyone intrigued by the workings of the human mind.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best places to start.......2007-09-07

This book is a great resource for those who wonder if they may have some issues with ADD and ADHD (actually the same diagnosis) I originally bought this book to figure myself out (and subsequently saw clues to my mother's behavior all these years). WHen my youngest was diagnosed with ADHD, I re-read it to get the perspective of a child's struggle with ADD. Essential reading.

5 out of 5 stars Do you question what ADD is and whether you or someone you love has ADD?.......2007-08-20

This book can change your life. If you read this book, and you see your life history/story, maybe you should find out a little more about ADD and yourself. Or if you read this book and you see your husband, wife or child, this can be a first step in answering many questions.

5 out of 5 stars The classic for ADD information.......2007-08-18

I love this book, and have bought several copies over the years for newly diagnosed friends, etc. It is concise, clear and not overly stuffy. It doesn't throw a pity party like some books about disabilities do, and offers a diagnostic criteria, as well as coping skills, medical links, and resources listed in the back. A must read if you or anyone you love has ADD, or ADHD.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST........2007-06-20

The absolute best book out there for an introduction to ADD. The structure of the book is perfectly managable for an ADDer without being condescendingly superficial or taking on a tone of talking to children, like some of these books do. I'd also recommend it to anyone who has friends or family who either doubt the existence of or (just don't know much about) ADD.
Check out Hallowell's "Delivered" for more coping mechanisms, and info on treatment, therapy and medication.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2007-06-17

If you wish to become more informed on the topic of ADD and ADHD,then this book is a "must read". The format is easy to read and understand. The reader can identify with one or more of the many examples and scenarios outlined in the book. I found it to be extremely helpful in understanding what ADD is really all about and what it feels like for my daughter to live with ADD.
In addition, I now recognize symptoms of adult ADD as well.

William Svoboda channels a lifetime of clinical experience into three areas--language, learning, and behavior--that encompass the major difficulties of children "growing up with epilepsy." In each area he looks at why the problems arise and assesses potential treatments. The focus of this comprehensive work is on the complete care of the child rather than on diagnosis, classification and medication alone. More than half of all epileptic children have interrelated language, learning, and/or behavior complications that persist beyond seizure control and present problems for health and educational systems. This reference makes a significant contribution to furthering the knowledge of clinicians, educators, and language specialists about the needs of this special pediatric population.

        Book Description

Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) is now recognized as the commonest cause of school under-achievement and behaviour difficulties in schoolchildren. It affects 5-10% of children aged 5-18 years - that is, the same proportion as asthma. Australia, like other countries, is undergoing a rapid increase in awareness of this condition amongst child-care professionals and parents. New parent support groups have been formed throughout Australia. There is regular coverage of the condition on radio and television and in newspapers and popular magazines. In All About A.D.D. Mark Selikowitz notes changing attitudes towards the diagnosis and treatment of A.D.D. among the ranks of paediatricians. This recent focus on A.D.D. proves that there is a need for an up-to-date, comprehensive and practical guide covering the condition in a balanced and authoritative manner. The book will be useful for parents as well as health professionals - doctors, psychologists, speech therapists, etc. - and educators. The book is of particular relevance to Australian readers, but will also be of interest and value to readers in the USA and the UK.

        Book Description

At last, a book for practicum! This book explores the problem-solving and decision-making process involved in clinical intervention planning across categories of children's communication disorders. The authors show how to conceptualize an overall intervention plan before addressing the client's first session. The chapters are conveniently organized according to three phases: long-term, short-term, and session. Goal writing and procedure planning evolve across the three phases. Includes case studies of four children with different types of speech/language disorders: language, phonology, fluency and voice. Anyone who practices or is interested in speech-language pathology.

4 out of 5 stars Moses & Klein breaks it down.......2005-10-18

This book breaks up each theory and explains it to you directly. It doesn't throw you off with tangents, like some other textbooks do. Moses & Klein try to take into consideration where the student is coming from, i.e. how much you already know and how much you need to know.

2 out of 5 stars This book is a hard read.......2000-12-04

Good information is included in this book but it is no walk in the park to glean the knowledge from it. There are better books in print that do the same thing with a lot less confusion on the part of the reader.

1 out of 5 stars book lingo at upper grad level but information for undergrad.......2000-11-30

I used this book as a student because my teacher required it but the whole class had trouble deciphering what was said in the core of this book. As a result the grades for the class was lowered substantially. This book was written for undergraduate students before they start clinic but the terms found in this book are really what only a graduate post-graduate would understand. If you are looking for a book that will help in clarifying goal steps and procedures I admantly do not recommend this one, it will only confuse you more just like it did the rest of my peers.
