This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model." The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member. --Richard FarrBook Description
Procrastination. Disorganization. Distractibility. Millions of adults have long considered these the hallmarks of a lack of self-discipline. But for many, these and other problems in school, at work and in social relationships are actually symptoms of an inborn neurological problem: ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder.
Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients -- both adults and children -- Dr. Edward R. Hallowell and Dr. John J. Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment.
Driven to Distraction is a must listen for everyone intrigued by the workings of the human mind.

Childhood Epilepsy: Language, Learning and Behavioural Complications
William B. Svoboda Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0521823382 |
Book Description
William Svoboda channels a lifetime of clinical experience into three areas--language, learning, and behavior--that encompass the major difficulties of children "growing up with epilepsy." In each area he looks at why the problems arise and assesses potential treatments. The focus of this comprehensive work is on the complete care of the child rather than on diagnosis, classification and medication alone. More than half of all epileptic children have interrelated language, learning, and/or behavior complications that persist beyond seizure control and present problems for health and educational systems. This reference makes a significant contribution to furthering the knowledge of clinicians, educators, and language specialists about the needs of this special pediatric population.

All About A.d.d.: UNDERSTANDING ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER
SELIKOWITZ Manufacturer: Oxford University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Accessories: ASIN: 0195536843 |
Book Description
Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) is now recognized as the commonest cause of school under-achievement and behaviour difficulties in schoolchildren. It affects 5-10% of children aged 5-18 years - that is, the same proportion as asthma. Australia, like other countries, is undergoing a rapid increase in awareness of this condition amongst child-care professionals and parents. New parent support groups have been formed throughout Australia. There is regular coverage of the condition on radio and television and in newspapers and popular magazines. In All About A.D.D. Mark Selikowitz notes changing attitudes towards the diagnosis and treatment of A.D.D. among the ranks of paediatricians. This recent focus on A.D.D. proves that there is a need for an up-to-date, comprehensive and practical guide covering the condition in a balanced and authoritative manner. The book will be useful for parents as well as health professionals - doctors, psychologists, speech therapists, etc. - and educators. The book is of particular relevance to Australian readers, but will also be of interest and value to readers in the USA and the UK.
