It would be nice to have pediatricians at your beck and call for every cough and wheeze, but the era of house visits is past. When the weather's raw and your child's in pain, start with your reference shelf. Donald Schiff and Steven Shelov have arranged the contents of the Guide to Your Child's Symptoms by the child's age: you'll find symptom guides from baby's colic, diarrhea, and spitting up to your adolescent's anxiety, depression, and skin problems. For each symptom, there's a description of usual causes, a chart of questions to consider, and what action to take. There's also an illustrated "First-Aid Manual." Guide to Your Child's Symptoms is a first-rate resource that explains when bed rest will do and when to get on the phone to your pediatrician.
Book Description
When an infant or small child is ill, it is often very difficult for a parent to understand or diagnose the nature of the problem. Since babies can't articulate what ails them, in most cases all a parent has to go on is the symptom that the child exhibits.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Guide to Your Child's Symptoms has been prepared by a team of the country's best pediatricians to enable a parent to quickly identify a symptom, learn its possible cause, and determine how best to proceed, whether it's taking action at home or calling the pediatrician immediately. The symptoms are listed alphabetically, and the text and illustrations that accompany each one are arranged in easy-to-follow charts. Unlike most child-care and parenting books, which are dense and text-heavy, this book lets a parent quickly assess the problem and decide what needs to be done for the child. The first of the book covers the 100 or so most common symptoms in A-Z format. The second part is an illustrated first-aid manual.
The American Academy of Pediatrics is the most respected authority on child health in America, and the
Guide to Your Child's Symptoms is an essential family reference that belongs in every household.

Fantastic Baby Shower gift! Wonderful book.......2007-05-21
A great all-around, general reference for babycare & childcare. Excellent baby shower gift - most pregnant women get too many baby clothes, stuffed animals, blankets and other useless gifts, but what parents need is good, sensible child care books. This is a good start for parents to have, and they can add specialty books about co-sleeping, or sleep-training, or discipline, and use the this AAP book to compare different solutions to parenting challenges.
Life Saver.......2006-02-12
I love, love, love this book. I have used this book more times than I can count. I highly recommend this one. If you have children buy it!
Great reference book!.......2005-11-18
This book is easy to use and addresses topics easily and concisely. It's a great resource to refer to when you don't have a true emergency and don't want to call your doctor's office for every issue that arises with your child.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

An old friend.......2007-09-19
i bought my original copy of this book in the 70's. It served me through both of my pregancies, inspired me to want to be involved with catching babies. My route was through med school. The book was loaned out many times. Its great strength is in the many good birthing stories. Our cultures view of birthing is full of horror stories that terrify mothers. A terrified woman does not have a good birthing experience. We are also inundated with technology. This book is a marvellous antidote, and has been important in making birth a normal and positive experience for the women who delivered with me. It is delightful to have the new edition, and to read through it again.
Must-read pregnancy book...........2007-09-03
This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend to ANY woman. It will open your eyes and heart
I want to share this book with all Women!.......2007-08-26
A good friend told me I should read this book, even though I wasn't pregnant ... I put it off. Now that I am pregnant, I read it, and now understand why you should read it. Woman who can become pregnant, should be educated on what to expect - this book starts out with awesome accounts written by woman who gave childbirth (hospital and natural); it empowered me. I am no longer scared of the unknown, I bought two copies of my own to share with pregnant friends and family, and recommend this as a gift to any woman who wants kids "someday", or who is expecting. Knowledge is power! I also recommend, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth (more suggestions and information regarding hospital options - I feel like it speaks to a larger audience). After reading this book, I would like to tell you that I do not have an ailment, I am pregnant; hospitals are for sick and injured people.
Absolute Pinnacle!.......2007-08-09
This is right up there in birth literature. Being an Active Birth Centre librarian, I've read a few. Some of the stories get a bit "trippy" which might put a few off but it's full of heart and practical advice. Dads with a sense of humour will love it. I have referred to it many many times for myself and other women. A must have classic.
trippy birth stories.......2007-08-09
I've read a lot of birth stories books and so it was a surprise to read this book full of people tripping out on the experience. I liked the second half about midwifery details too. I've been toying with the idea of becoming a midwife and this has certainly given me much more info to think about. I highly recommend this book before anyone's birth since people should know that the hospital experience, while being the cultural norm, is the aberration in how birth should be!

Better understanding of preemie .......2007-05-05
This was a great book to read while my daughter was in the hospital. It had a good flow and helpful information. The only part that I didn't like was the section on breastfeeding. The author seemed to have a bad experience with her preemie and breastfeeding and her discouragement really came out in this section. I guess it was good though because it motivated me to touch base with a lactation consultant so that I would not share in her breastfeeding disappointment. Overall this book did help me to better understand my new and unexpected life with my preemie.
Great book for preemie parents!.......2005-03-22
We bought this when our son was born 10 weeks early. This book is very well written and easy to understand. It takes you through the early NICU days all the way to school age. This book was very helpful to us during the NICU time because when it first happened we were clueless (and we sometimes found it hard to get answers from doctors). It gives you information so that you know what questions to ask your baby's doctor. This book explained pretty much anything preemie related.
Highly recommended for any preemie parent!
The Best Guide through preemie parenthood.......2002-01-29
I am both a physician and a mother of a son who arrived 11 weeks early. This book has helped in every facet of my premature parenthood from breastfeeding (or, in my case, my ongoing attempts) to just feeling I was not the only preemie parent out there. In addition, the explanations of the various medical problems premature babies may face are excellent. Truly, a book that every premature parent would benefit from having.
How to Keep Your Sanity During an Especially Tough Situation.......2001-07-28
Our son was born at 26 weeks (3 months early) and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until one day past his due date. We were given this book after he'd been there one month. Let me tell you what a life-saver it was! We had been given a "crash course" in the care delivered to a premature infant... very scary stuff. Wires, machines, noise, drugs -- and in the middle of it all this unbelievably tiny human being who is your child. This book took much of the fear away and instead educated us. Preemies don't stop being preemies when they come home! This book gives the technical data in an easy to understand format that is not condescending and also focuses on the emotional as well as physical needs of the baby. Additionally, it gives contacts and information on potential problems, how to spot them early, and how to handle them. There is also a good referal list in the back. I would recommend this book not only to preemie parents, but to anyone in contact with a preemie and their family. PS. As of this writing, our son is one year old and doing great!
Better books out there.......2001-07-18
I haven't used this book much at all. Books by Joseph Garcia-Prats and Dana Wechsler Linden were much more helpful.
Book Description
A tongue-in-cheek peek at modern parenting from a father’s point of view, this spoof is targeted at today’s career-minded mom and dad team. Breezy, irreverent humor escorts dads through basic topics such as home-from-the-hospital adjustments, post-partum dos and don’ts, diaper changing, feeding, difficult infant behavior, child-care choices, and the bustle of the pretoddler stage. Lightening up the serious business of being a 21st-century father, this book teaches dads that they don’t have to be perfect and shows them how to enjoy the different stages of a baby’s life.
Customer Reviews:
I guess some readers just don't get it, but that's okay for the rest of us........2007-09-08
For whatever reason, the humor in this book really clicked with me. Now, I have acquaintances who are also new parents, but in my mind, they tend to blow every detail of parenting out of proportion and take every little part of the learning experience way too seriously. I don't know. Some people we know are just so uptight about it, they don't seem to enjoy any of the fun, joyful times before and after baby arrives. That's right, Keeping the Baby Alive makes fun of every aspect of parenting, start to finish. Why some expect this satire to be a serious infant care guide is beyond me. Look at the cover for crying out loud! It's an all-out, put-on spoof. Like Borat. If you're expecting something else, don't buy it.
OK but not great.......2007-08-31
I read this book when my little girl was a few months old. By then, I had figured out 90% of what this book covered. I recommend that if you get it, read it before you have had a baby. If you have already had one, you definitely won't need this book. If you are already a few months along, save some bucks and buy diapers instead. It was good but really overpriced and the comments made were mostly pretty obvious. If you are a dad-to-be then maybe you will get more from this book than I did. It does have a few humourous moments though.
Useless New Father Book.......2007-08-23
Why do so many of these "new father" books assume we men are all a bunch of bumbling, clueless idiots when it comes to childcare? Why are so many of them written like it was 1957 instead of 2007, and that the most we'll have to do with the baby is occasionally changing a diaper or playing peekaboo? This book just plain ticked me off. Like one of the other reviews said, it's mean-spirited, and I'm embarrassed to have bought the thing.
Special Edition.......2007-08-21
My husband loved this book, but with news of our second baby, I found a new, expanded edition. Keeping the Baby Alive till Your Wife Gets Home, Special Edition. It has a hilarious pre-birth chapter and a short one on "The 10 Commandments of Infant Care" which made me laugh so hard I cried. My husband laughed out loud through the whole book.
Waste of time and money.......2007-08-14
I'm a new father and bought this book hoping to find some useful tips and some humor. Unfortunately it does not have much of either. It seems that most of this book is directed towards the totally clueless. The humor fails more times than not, but at least there are detailed instructions on how to play peek-a-boo. So if you have already figured out that poop smells, changing diapers is not fun and babies spit up, then save yourself the money and just watch a tv show that has a dad and child in it and you'll already be a step ahead of this book.
Book Description
In this classic crack-up of a book, Dave Barry gives his wacky perspective on sex, childbirth, parenting and other forms of slow, cruel torture.
In Babies and Other Hazards of Sex, Dave exposes natural childbirth for what it is: a pop phenomenon of the 1960s that, along with paisley bell-bottoms and creative sideburns, deserves a rest. He examines the new federal law requiring prospective fathers to free themselves from their self-made macho prisons--to laugh, cry, love and just generally behave like certified wimps.
Dave also reveals, for the first time in print, the secret chant for painless childbirth.
Then learn why no secret chant could possibly take a woman's mind off the fact that she is in such pain that she wants a gigantic comet to crash into the earth and kill her and her husband and the dotor and the nurses and everyone else in the world.

Babies and Other Hazards of Sex: review.......2007-07-04
This book should be the bible for those considering having kids. I bought more copies of this for gifts then I can count. It's too funny and I highly recommend it.
One of Dave Barry's best laughs.......2007-01-21
Purchased as a gift for a close friend shortly after they found out they were expecting, because I purchased this 5 years ago when our son and his wife were expecting and living a great distance away. Both men found this book a laugh a minute. Dave Barry at his best.
Warning - Do not read in last trimester!.......2006-06-29
This book is very funny, weirdly prophetic and difficult to read if you've got 8lbs of baby pressing down on your bladder!
THE ONLY BOOK YOU WILL NEED.............2005-10-21
I have always been a fan of Dave Barry.
When my baby's mama got pregnant I spent the better part of three months in a drunken haze. "WHAT WILL I DO?!" I constantly asked my friends. None of them knew. I had just barely turned twenty one and none of my friends were or ever had been in the same boat.
Truth of the matter is, nobody can tell you what to do in this circumstance. The object is to go with the flow, from the time that chick of yours gets pregnant to ... forever.
I was THRILLED when I found this book, and it did not dissapoint. Without it I may have lost my mind and killed that chick with a hatchet.
Very funny, and it will make you forget that you are in HELL! Must have for suprised "expectants."
Not worth the money.......2005-08-04
Just not funny, I returned the book and got my money back.
Book Description
This comprehensive guide for new parents finding themselves overwhelmed dealing with the reality of parenting provides "parent-tested, pediatrician-approved" advice to allay their fears. Written in a compassionate yet authoritative tone by two moms who are also pediatricians, this guide covers a wealth of topics that often prove daunting in the first eight weeks of a child's life. Starting with "Into the Mouths of Babes" (the trials of breastfeeding) and "What Comes in Must Come Out" (a discussion of "pee and poop") and moving on through "Fever: Trial by Fire" and "Seeing Yellow: Jaundice," this guide offers sound advice that will enable parents to feel confident about their parenting skills. Hints on daily living, sleep patterns, crying, the art and science of diapering, and traveling with a newborn are also provided.

Brilliant book to prepare you for bring baby home!.......2007-10-05
Great book. It is informative and gives you a good base of information to feel prepared for bring baby home. We would highly recommend this as a core book to have in you bookshelf!
BEST book for up to 6 months old.......2007-08-31
PROS: Easy to read, detailed, has illustrations, straightforward. Wish I read this while I was pregnant!
CONS: Useful for babies up to 6 months
Cliff notes for your newborn.......2007-08-17
It is a good quick synopsis. A caring for your newborn cliff notes. They address all the major topics, deciphering cries, poop, bathing, diapering, sleeping, car safety, illnesses etc. If you are going to buy several books regarding your baby than you could do worse than to purchase this one. However, if you only want to purchase one book, get
what to Expect the 1st yr. They have an entire section devoted to newborn care. It basically gives all of the information that you could find in here. Plus, you are able to use it as a resource for more than just the first few weeks.
Best book to prepare for baby!.......2007-08-09
If you read only one book to help you prepare for your new baby, this should be it. It is straightforward and full of information, but not overwhelming or confusing at all. It does not waste a lot of space with excessive or redundent explanations or cutesy humor. My husband (who is a doctor) and I (definitely not a doctor) both love this book, and recommend it to every soon-to-be parent.
Very helpful book.......2007-06-21
I am a first time mom and was very nervous about what I was going to do after I had my baby as far as taking care of it. Before I read this book I was very scared and nervous about whether or not I was going to know what to do. This book sets your mind at ease and breaks things down in layman's terms, it doesn't give you more information than you need, and it doesn't give you opinion based information. I recommend this book to the scared first time mom.

My son is 13 months and I would have done things differently if I would have had this sooner. It is definately worth it!
Montessori.......2007-01-04
At first, I was a bit skeptical at how one could use Montessori for babies, but then as I read the book I realized that it was only logical and using common since. I have tried a lot on our baby and let me tell you he is not an easy baby!
I was amazed at how well the methods worked. It also proves that babies are very very intelligent, I mean I always new that, but when you put practice into work and see the results, it is really very fascinating! It also proves that all the work you put in now and the more patient you are, the better result you get.

I was quite disappointed in this book.......2006-05-31
I have been reading several good guides to the Montessori method, including one volume from the library I was able to get written by Montessori herself. I was hopeful that this book by Lillard would give good sound advice for practical current infant Montessori techniques based on a sound knowledge of Montessori. Unfortunately this was not the case.
My biggest complaint regarding this book was the disregard shown to infant well being. Leaving an infant alone for extended periods of time is not advisable and can be dangerous. I had a very large objection to her advice that infants should be weaned at 9 months whether the infant seemed "ready" or not. That certainly does not seem to be respecting an infant's innate intelligence. Then there was the potty training at 12 months advice. Well that may be great if your child is showing signs of readiness, it would not be advisable for the many many infants who are simply not developmentally ready at that stage. Those ideas of the author are in direct conflict with Montessori principles of giving children materials for their developmental readiness. Not all children will be ready then and forcing them as the author seems to suggest will not likely lead to positive results.
There are much better guides out there and this one I simply cannot recommend as it is harsh and gives an impression of Montessori principles that is not truly accurate in many instances.
It's very informative..........2006-02-28
I had to give this book five stars simply for it's content. I do think that it is a little dry to read through, but the information you glean is wonderful. I found the book to be quite convicting, as well as educational. I am very thrilled that there are fun and educational ways to experience life with my children! I love the fact that Montessori views children as people and infants have so much to learn. Stop the crazy use of useless toys simply for entertainment! We have little Einsteins at this age if we allow them to flourish.
Book Description
Childbirth is a life-altering experience for any woman, but a Cesarean delivery can be overwhelming, whether it’s unexpected or planned. Despite the fact that roughly one in four babies in the United States is delivered by c-section, very little information about the experience is included in typical pregnancy books and physicians and childbirth educators often gloss over the details.
The Essential C-Section Guide is written not only for women to read in preparation for a scheduled c-section and for those considered “high risk” who know that a c-section may become necessary but also for women recovering from an unexpected surgical delivery. This book provides answers to important questions about what the surgery entails, what a woman can expect as she recovers, and what considerations should be made for future pregnancies and deliveries.
With frank discussions about the physical and emotional aspects surrounding a c-section, the authors share comforting wisdom about early bonding, pain control, breastfeeding, infant care, healing from surgery, postpartum exercise, partner involvement, and much more, in detail not available anywhere else.
Written by authors who have firsthand knowledge of birth by c-section, The Essential C-Section Guide is well-researched and addresses its unique concerns with intelligence and compassion.

Great Information.......2007-09-29
I had to have a cesarean for medical reasons but couldn't find any information about what happens and what to expect afterwards. All the pregnancy books only had maybe a page about c-sections and wasn't helpful at all. This was a great reference. It made the whole experience easier to deal with and gave me the knowledge I needed to feel comfortable.
Helped ease my fears!.......2007-07-28
This book has helped ease my fears about having a C-Section. I have marginal placenta previa and my Dr. recommended a C-Section. After believing all my life I'd have a natural delivery, this was disappointing. I am more comfortable now that I've read the book, because I know what to expect and what questions to ask. The book has the good exercise section at the end, which I haven't quite read through yet, but that many reviewers find helpful.
Informative and reassuring.......2006-09-20
This is a really good book with a lot of detailed information to help any women who are fixing to have a c-section or have had one. I had a difficult labor that ended in an unscheduled c-section and was very nervous about it. It read this book 5 months later and feel much better about the experience. Highly recommended!!
Helpful info for the 1st time C-Section mom.......2006-08-01
There were a lot of questions that I had once I found out that my son was breech and that I would have to have a c-section. This book was full of info and helped explain the entire process. The only thing it lacked was a bit more on the recovery side. I had a few questions about pain and a stitch that opened ...I had to call my Dr for some answers.
Good for emotional and physical recovery.......2005-09-10
This book was very helpful to me when it came to emotional and physical recovery from a C-section. Most books are little short on the end of emotional recovery. This book is not home birth friendly though.
Product Description
Elsie de Wolfe is a 20th-century legend and is the mother of modern interior decoration. Her name is familiar to many who practice the art of interior design or who are linked to the fashionable world of tastemaking. She provided appropriate settings for the new rich in the first half of the 20th century and in the process helped to shape our understanding of what we have come to know as the modern domestic interior. I am going in now for interior decoration. By that I mean supplying objets d art and giving advice regarding the decoration of their houses to wealthy persons who do not have the time, inclination, nor culture to do such work for themselves. It is nothing new. Women have done the same thing before. (Elsie de Wolfe) Through the measured re-examination of known materials as well as the review of history-clarifying documents that have been overlooked or underused by previous de Wolfe enthusiasts, Elsie de Wolfe: The Birth of Modern Interior Decoration provides the foundation of a renewed interest in her groundbreaking career, her philosophy of design, and her belief that an atmosphere of beauty could cure a world of ills. This large format, profusely illustrated book covers 29 projects (including Villa Trianon, The Colony Club, Anne Vanderbilt, Anne Morgan, the Duchess of Windsor, and J. Ogden Armour, to name a few) and concludes with a timeline of her works. Written by English decorative arts scholar Penny Sparke and edited by New York Times contributor Mitchell Owens, Elsie de Wolfe: The Birth of Modern Interior Decoration presents the most in-depth look ever into the design aesthetic of this early 20th-century master decorator.
