Customer Reviews:
Best nutritional guide for any athlete.......2006-03-17
My trainer turned me on to this cookbook and I am glade he did. He is a former Mr Maryland and he is VERY nutritional conscious. I highly recommend this book for any athlete, be he novice or be he pro .... this is the one to use.
Great Food! Very Good Book!!!.......2002-08-30
I am a female lightweight bodybuilder and fitness enthusiast. I really needed to learn more about low-fat/healthy cooking that my family would enjoy and eat. (I already know how to make the fattening stuff!) This book has wonderful recipes. The cheesecake is so good people don't believe it is low fat, the tuna dip is excellent for parties. I am really enjoying everything I have tried. I thought the use of fat-free products would be bland and not appealing at all, but I was very wrong. The recipes are very tasty. One drawback is that some of the recipes are confusing, ie. the cheesecake ingredient list calls for fat-free yogurt, then recipe states "to add lemon yogurt". So be sure to read the recipe entirely before shopping so you can be clear on what you really need to buy. Also, the nutritional information is not always accurate. (I plugged some of the recipes into a nutritional software program.) But it is a good book with great recipes nonetheless. I am buying it as gifts for all of my friends.
Finally!.......2002-06-26
I am a new fitness competitor, and I had a hard time adjusting to the "off season". I didnt know how to eat, and how to cook! This book has become my staple. I have made soooo many recipes in here and have yet to be disappointed. The fact that she breaks down the macronutrients is wonderful for those of us that need to watch them closely! I even think it would be great for someone who wants to learn about a healthy lifestyle.
The banana fudge cake is wonderful!!!!!
love it!.......2000-01-15
Variety of recipes, easy (fast) prep time, and nutrition breakdowns for the recipes are the highlights that make A Taste...a worthy purchase
D-e-l-i-g-h-t-f-u-l!.......1999-09-02
I finally picked up both of Laura's cook books and I was especially pleased with the variety in this one. The recipes are generally, full meal types- a combination of both carbs and proteins and, of cource, low in the fat department. So far, I have tried 6 different recipes and all have really impressed me. I also liked the fact that she lists the calorie information on each recipe. Thats helpful in planning my diet- and saves a lot of time looking up calorie counts in books.

Each recipes includes nutritional information and diabetic exchanges.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book with great recipes and techniques!.......2004-01-21
My husband and I aren't diabetic, but we both need to lose weight. We didn't have much success with any of the brand-name diets, so we went to a registered dietician who put us on a diabetic exchange diet. Initially we had a hard time sticking to it, because it was hard to figure out ways to make food tasty with limited fat and starch intake, not to mention trying to figure out correct portion sizes to fit our exchanges.
This book, however, is making it much easier. I'm learning how to make subsitutions so food tastes good but is still healthy and within our dietary limits. The food may not always be as full-flavored as our favorite old fat-laden recipes, but there are recipes my husband is actually requesting, instead of wishing he could have his favorite fast food or Thai food!
The intro to the book has tips on portion sizes and subsitutionswhich are helpful in knowing what to eat and how much of it. Couple this information with a good kitchen scale, and you'll find that you'll be preparing meals you're actually looking forward to eating!
Mr. Food's Quick & Easy Diabetic Cooking.......2003-01-08
Brief and to the point, this book was just WONDERFUL. Mr. Food's TV recipes always seem so deliciously decedant. This book is also delicious ... but very far from decadent! Loved it!
Simple, quick.......2002-04-12
While his little show makes me want to jump out a window, his cookbook lives up to its name. Quick and easy, and the recipes actually work, unlike with many other cookbooks where the recipes do not turn out. I give it 4 out of 5 stars because the book lives up to its name and is affordable.

Before I started on a diabetic diet I had a few of Mr. Food's other recipe books. I was so excited to find out he, Art Ginsburg, had written a recipe book for those with diabetes. My diabetic diet had become so boring and plain until I received this book from Amazon.com. Now I look forward to planning my next meal.
The Double Chocolate Brownies were a hit with an Irish club I
belong to. People were happy to see something they were allowed to eat on our snack table instead of the usual sugary treats.
Comments to One Star Review.......2001-08-29
THE TRUTH ABOUT SUGAR As a Registered Dietitian, for more than 20 years, and Certified Diabetes Educator, for over 10 years, I was so distressed by reviewer comments regarding sugar in the diabetic diet, that I am taking time to respond. Since 1994 dietitians and educators working with people with diabetes have been trying to get the truth out about sucrose (sugar). Sugar is NOT a forbidden food for people with diabetes. Scientific evidence from more than a dozen studies has shown that the use of sugar does impair blood glucose control in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Sugar and foods containing sugar must be substituted for other carbohydrates, gram for gram, and not simply added to the diabetes meal plan. In making such substitutions, the nutrient content of concentrated sweets and sucrose-containing foods, as well as the presence of other nutrients frequently ingested with sucrose, such as fat, must be considered. The bottom line for people with diabetes is to check the total carbohydrate in a recipe or on a food label and work that into their diabetes meal plan. Because there are individual variations in blood glucose response, self-monitoring is an important part of diabetes control.

Book Description
Imagine being on a diet and starting the day with a pecan waffle, snacking on Macadamia Fudge and finishing dinner with Chocolate Crème Brulee-- and still staying on a low-carb, healthy and slimming routine.
Impossible?
Not since the release of the revolutionary new cookbook "Low-Carb Sweets and The Art of Self-Indulgence" by Sharon Allbright.
This author spent four year of research to break the "deprivation-barrier" of low-carb dieting and managed to eliminate sugar and flour by replacing them with delicious, health-building ingredients.
The former health columnist came up with more than 80 groundbreaking desserts to "diet for." The best news is that these indulgences are not only delicious, but also high in protein, rich in fiber and contain less than five grams of carbohydrates. This is an extraordinary feat, considering that a regular piece of chocolate cake can contain as many as 60 grams of carbohydrates.
The 216 pages of sweet creations range from waffles to pies and contain not a smidgeon of ingredients that cause sugar binges or weight gain. Some of these recipes have even been tested by diabetics who were delighted to report that the treats didn't raise their blood sugar levels.
The "Zero Carb Waffle" is a "breakfast wonder" with more protein than two eggs and boosts your fiber intake beyond that of two pieces of whole-wheat toast.
According to the author, "These recipes are not only simple to make but also time friendly." In fact, the Macadamia Fudge can be put together in less than five minutes, in case of an emergency "chocoholic attack!"
This project has been a long labor of love for Allbright, who confesses, "I love sweets-- but eating old-fashioned flour and sugar-filled desserts caused uncontrollable binges, blood sugar plunges and of course, weight gain."
The second segment of this unique book, "The Art of Self Indulgence," came to light through the author's experiences with this seemingly utopian eating style. "It turns out that years of dieting can make one feel guilty eating sweets-- healthy or not," reports the new "Queen of Low Carbs"
Tips on breaking barriers of self-denial make this not only a soul-satisfying cookbook, but also a plan that can transform dieting to a "sweeter way of life."
Customer Reviews:
Oh, thank you, thank you Sharon Allbright!.......2006-08-27
As someone currently following the reduced carb lifestyle....I love this book. Tonight I made the Walnut Streusel Muffins and served them with coffee to my non-carb watching family. Yep, they had no idea that they were eating something first of all that was healthy and second of all, sugar-free and only 2.5 carbs. I have so many favorites in this book that I could not choose only one favorite. I was pleased that with buying a few key ingredients you can make almost all the recipes in the book. The author gives a very clear description of exactly what ingredients you need to begin this fun journey. I learned quite a bit about soy powders and the different types. I could not say enough things about this book!
great book.......2006-04-29
have loved every recipe that I've tried hope the author comes out with another book
The psyllium pits!.......2005-05-18
The recipes were the pits. They consist of hard to find ingredients. When you finshed reading the recipe it didn't even sound like it would be satisfying. The recipes call for flaxseed and psyllium for baking. I think psyllium is one of the main ingrediants in Metamucil. What are flaxseeds? Sorry that does not spark my appetite. This is just my personal opinion.
Disappointing and outdated.......2005-02-15
I was disappointed with this book. A limited ingredient list is used over and over in some uninspiring combinations; nearly every recipe relies on either soy protein powder or whey protein powder, and neither one in my experience results in desserts that taste like *the real thing*.
The only two sweeteners used are sucralose and stevia. No mention is made of other popular sugar alcohols like maltitol, xylitol, and erythritol. The book was published in Feb. 2003, maybe these sweeteners weren't as readily available then...
At present you can find better recipes and learn more about new low-carb products by going online.
Just didn't like the recipes.......2004-03-30
I tried really hard to like this book, but almost everything I made turned out, well, yucky. I didn't like a single recipe that included any kind of protein powder (that includes most of the cookies, cakes, waffles and candies). The only exception was the mocha shake, although I had to omit half the gelatin to make it drinkable. I haven't tried any of the pie or psyllium-based cookie recipies, so I can't speak for those.
That said, I really enjoyed the section on the art of indulgence, which I think is worth the two stars.

Customer Reviews:
Making every meal 'holiday' through flavorful, healthy food.......2005-12-06
At first glance Every Day's A Holiday Diabetic Cookbook might seem a Christmas title - but it's far more; it promotes making every meal 'holiday' through flavorful, healthy food. Mr. Food is best known for his earlier 'guy food' books on how the basic bachelor male could whip up a gourmet meal with few ingredients or knowledge: with this and his prior Quick And Easy Diabetic Cooking, he moves in a healthier direction, lending his focus on flavor and speed and appeal to a diabetic's healthy requirements. From Garlic-Crusted Cornish Hens to Champagne Turkey, Creamy Spinach Soup and Balsamic Pork, the dishes sound complicated and fancy - but complicated, they are not! Packed with flavor and appeal - and some of the appeal lies in the super-quick preparation times!
Amazing Book for weight loss.......2004-03-29
This book has been a blessing to me. Having lost some weight, I really wanted a book that emphasized great food and low cal. What better way than a book for diabetics. An easy way to reduce sugar and calories, even though I am not diabetic. And who better to bring you great food and EASY to prepare food than MR Food. I immediately made the chicken cordon bleu. Swore I'd never have time to prepare it late one evening and feed 3 starving children. Yet somehow it came together in 30 minutes and tasted amazing....better to me than restaurant eats and so easy! My picky kids loved it as well as the steak tips recipe....and they dislike veggies normally!
The Greatest cookbook ever.......2002-12-08
This is the greatest cookbook I ever brought and I recommend everyone who like delicous desserts there are some as Mr Food would say Oooh it's so gooood. I just got this book this week and it makes a great Holiday gift. And you don't have to be a diabetic to enjoy this good food.
Sure everybody loves them............2002-11-27
This book does have alot of great recipes in it, but that is because they are old standbys, at least at my house. I do enjoy the fact that it has the nutritional information listed, which I wish more recipe books would follow suit. And the little tips at the bottom of each page are interesting. Most all of the recipes are fairly simple and this would be a great starter book.

This new edition of The Art of Cooking for the Diabetic is a treasure for people with diabetes, and their families. In the last few years, diabetes management and dietary recommendations have changed, and this book reflects those changes. First published in 1978, this third edition has been completely updated, and nearly 300 of its 374 recipes are new. A handy list of "what's out" and "what's in" helps you make sense of the guideline changes--you'll see that the recommendations have been liberalized and individualized, making them much easier and more pleasant to stick to than in the past.
The first 100 pages explain the current thinking on diet and diabetes management: what, how much, and when to eat; the food exchange system; and what you need to know about carbohydrates, fats, and eating out. Hess makes portion control easier by giving "visual guides": a medium potato is the size of a computer mouse; one ounce of cheese is the size of a domino, for example.
The recipes are diverse and tasty, and include familiar favorites and ethnic-inspired dishes for variety. Each includes serving size, nutritional breakdown (calories, carbohydrates, protein, fat, cholesterol, fiber, sodium), food exchanges, and appropriateness for a low-sodium diet. --Joan Price
Book Description
Originally published in 1978, The Art of Cooking for the Diabetic has revolutionized the way people with diabetes think about food. Each of the 375 unbelievably delicious recipes--from appetizers and beverages to entrees and desserts--is healthful and packed with flavor. Completely updated to include the latest American Diabetes Association exchanges and nutrition recommendations, this classic cookbook also details how to incorporate the newest fat and sugar-free foods as well as current guidelines for sugar, fat, and sodium.
Customer Reviews:
Used it for years.......2001-04-07
I bought the first edition of this book in the early eighties to use the recipe exchanges along with "Eat and Stay Slim" by Better Homes and Gardens. I still use it to this day and whenever I serve meatloaf or chicken a la king from it I get compliments and folks want the recipes! Many of the recipes are easy to make and the kids love them.
There are better books on this subject........2000-09-30
I tried recipes from this book and they are awefull. Funky combinations that do not work. Some of the recipes are very basic and may appeal to people who do not like exotic or fancy food. For better recipes and recipes that offer more variety, flavor and flair, I like the American Diabetes Association Diabets Cookbook and Joslin's Diabetic Gourmet Cookbook.
A MUST FOR ANYONE COOKING FOR A DIABETIC.......1999-12-09
This book provides such a wealth of information to anyone who is new to the world of a diabetic. It answered so many questions that I had and didn't know where to go for the answers.
With all the new products on the market, this updated version takes the pain out of grocery shopping in the supermarket skills section.
I bought three copies....One for my mom, one for a friend and one for myself and we all agree...Bon Appetit!
This book is a lifesaver.......1999-01-14
I was just diagnosed with type II Diabetes. My first stop was Amazon.com and I am so glad I came here. This book has shown me that there is culinary pleasure AFTER diabetes. THANK YOU!
Great food for anyone.......1998-04-14
When I was pregnant with my first child, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The dietician gave me strict instructions about what to eat -- something like two starches and three proteins and one fat for breakfast and on through the day in a similar vein - with little help as to how to translate that code into real-life eating.
This is where The Art of Cooking for the Diabetic came in. This book provided me with straightforward, easy-to-follow advice not only about food exchanges, but also exercise (important for pregnant women) and eating out (very helpful for the working mom).
And the recipes! I found I could still eat pancakes (Leningrad Special Buckwheat Pancakes) and pizza (sausage mini pizzas) and pasta (pasta with tomatoes and chicken) and, of course, dessert (raspberry mousse). My non-diabetic husband did not feel the least bit diet-deprived. In fact, even though my gestational diabetes has now disappeared, we still refer to Cooking for the Diabetic for some favorite dishes.

Why isn't there a "negative" number of stars?.......2002-12-28
This cookbook contains recipes with very high carbohydrate counts. I follow a low-carb diet for health reasons (not vanity), and I could never eat any of the items in this cookbook. I am an excellent cook, and I've come up with some wonderful low-carb desserts; but I was hoping for something original. Instead, I found too, too, too many carbs! People with diabetes may also have carbohydrate intolerance, and they should be careful of what they eat in terms of carbs. Even their doctors may not advise them of this problem since many diabetic diets still recommend a high percentage of daily intake be in the form of complex carbohydrates. I did not prepare any of the recipes, so I can't comment on the results. I returned the book.
I tried to give negative stars for this review........2002-12-25
I tried two recipes in this book, Creamy Chocolate Mousse. p 96 and Butterscotch-Chocolate Fudge, p 24.
The mousse is the worst thing to ever have passed my lips. I don't know why all those ingredients were wasted in this recipe; because the only thing I tasted was the cream cheese and the instant coffee. It is reprehensible that one could taste this concoction and still place in a recipe book to make others ill.
The "fudge" is anything but. It never attains the consistency of fudge, turning instead, to a gellatenous mess that can't even be washed down the drain. It must be thrown in the garbage - OUTSIDE - so that it does not stink up the house.
I think Ms. Finsand, and all those who contributed to this book should be required to spend the rest of their lives eating nothing but the recipes in this book. She should at least taste every recipe in the book before publishing it.
A Chocaholic's Life Saver.......2000-07-27
Having just been diagnosed with Diabetes I thought my life was over until I found this cookbook. It has been a lifesaver! The receipes are easy to follow and most ingredients you already have at home. I'm now purchasing for others in my family so they can enjoy it as much as I do. The layout of the book is easy to follow and very user friendly. I've thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook. I would recommend it to anyone - Diabetic or not. It's a healthier way to live and you'll feel great!
