Based on his father's bestselling The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Sean Covey applies the same principles to teens, using a vivacious, entertaining style. To keep it fun, Covey writes, he "stuffed it full of cartoons, clever ideas, great quotes, and incredible stories about real teens from all over the world... along with a few other surprises." Did he ever! Flip open to any page and become instantly absorbed in real-life stories of teens who have overcome obstacles to succeed, and step-by-step guides to shifting paradigms, building equity in "relationship bank accounts," creating action plans, and much more.

As a self-acknowledged guinea pig for many of his dad's theories, Sean Covey is a living example of someone who has taken each of the seven habits to heart: be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win-win; seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize; and sharpen the saw. He includes a comical section titled "The 7 Habits of Highly Defective Teens," which includes some, shall we say, counterproductive practices: put first things last; don't cooperate; seek first to talk, then pretend to listen; wear yourself out... Covey's humorous and up-front style is just light enough to be acceptable to wary teenagers, and down-and-dirty enough to really make a difference. (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter

This book is the most painful book I've ever had to read. Spare yourself and don't read it.

5 out of 5 stars Grest Book.......2007-09-12

This book is excellent to guide your children on the right path of life at an early age.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-09-02

The book was fine, after I ordered it from Books A Million. I had ordered it from Amazon's vendor "Warehouse Deals", and after waiting two weeks with no book and no response to my questions to "Warehouse Deals" I ordered from Books A Million. On their behalf Amazon did credit my account. Still have not had a response from the seller(?).

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended!!.......2007-08-26

I actually bought this book for myself when I was 25 years old. I didn't buy it for a teenaged brother or a daughter. It was purely for myself. I had read Stephen Covey's "7 Habits..." when I was in college and was very inspired by the book but decided to buy this book just to check it out. It looked like a fun read and I was curious to know what Stephen's son had to say about the habits. As mentioned in other reviews, both books have exactly the same ideas except Sean's book presents the ideas in a much simpler form (without losing the essense). I think the simplicity of Sean's book actually enhances the message being communicated. And now, although I still have Stephen Covey's book, I refer back to Sean Covey's book instead when I want a refresher. I highly recommend this book to adults who are looking for inspirational self-help books. I am going out to buy Sean's other book which seem to be receiving higher acclaim. Cheers.

5 out of 5 stars not only for teens!.......2007-08-20

I recommend this book for young adults too.The simple, no-nonsense approach of Sean Covey makes this book an easy read. There's no useless psychobabble in this book unlike other self-help books.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2007-10-11

If you are looking for a book to help explain the changes that boys will endure as they enter puberty, this is the book to get! The layout is wonderful and it thoroughly explains everything. There is just enough information to answer any questions boys may have. I reviewed this with my son (who is 13) and he felt more at ease knowing some of the things that have, or will start, to happen to him are "normal." He especially was receptive to the fact that he will start to grow taller (as he is on the short side) with puberty. Overall, I highly recommend it!!

4 out of 5 stars Great information about a confusing time:.......2007-08-31

I bought this book for my son. I have read the entire thing cover to cover and have decided that he is only ready for some of the material at this point. He will be allowed to read the whole thing in a year or two. This book gives great info on health and hygiene as well as changes in the body during puberty. There are comments about becoming sexually active that I am not comfortable with at this point but I think that may just be because I don't think my son is old enough for the details.I do recommend this book but encourage parents to read it and decide for themselves if their son(s) should read the whole thing or not.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Prepares Boys of This Age.......2007-04-10

No questions needed after my son read this book. This book if perfect for boys. It touches base on hygiene and taking care of yourself. Some of my husband's friends got a kick out of reading it, but it perfectly prepares boys that need help or have any curious tendencies. I am so glad I found this book. I highly recommend this book for parents with curious boys.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for younger pre-teen boys!.......2007-01-09

I bought this book as part of a three book set, including "The Teenage Guy's Survival Guide" by Daldry and "The Guy Book, An Owner's Manual" by Jukes, to explain growing up to my son (see my other reviews).

This book is by far the lower level book of those three. It appears to be at about a 4th - 5th grade reading level, and is printed in a larger font, making it an easy read for even a younger or reading disabled pre-teen boy.
The illustrations are numerous and cartoonish, and should make it more attractive to younger readers.

This book is very basic, and is geared more towards a basic understanding of what is happening to the boy's body. It includes short, easy to read sections on physical changes (both sexual and general body growth and development, with good illustrations of growing male anatomy, with genital self-exams and health concerns explained very well, this may be the ONLY puberty book for boys that does that!), physical health, diet, mental health (depression, changing emotions, coping with death of a loved one, and parental divorce), feelings, social changes, and, at the last chapter, sex. The sex chapter delves into the areas of changing feelings towards girls, crushes, dating, peer pressure (including bullying and pressure to have sex), and STDs (very brief, very vague). It also has a special two page section on sexual harrassment and what's OK and NOT OK. Very cool! This book has two VERY SHORT paragraphs on "having a crush on another boy", but doesn't explain it at all, except to say that it can be complicated to figure out who you are attracted to, and that these feelings may change many times throughout your life. It advocates discussing these feelings with an adult, and gives no references to hotlines or resources. I think I can safely say it glazes over the topic and makes it go away. Which is probably good for very young pre-teens that are not ready to experiment that way yet (or for children being raised by parents who don't support it).

This book has an excellent terminology dictionary in the back!

This book appears to have been written much like anyone would expect a medical reference book for pre-teens to have been written, and functions much like one would assume a "health class" in school would. It is very wide in it's scope, but not detailed in anything. It promotes health and healthy choices. It reads like a reference book, which may be good or not, depending on the boy and how he was raised. The lack of commentary and story-telling may bring a sense of comfort to boys not ready to delve into these topics comfortably on a casual level.

I highly recommend it as the very first book to introduce puberty to young pre-teen boys (say ages 10 or 11) or older boys with learning disabilities or ADD as it is easy to read and not overwhelming (I say this from experience as my son has both). A great first book on the topic!

I also think this would be a good book for young girls who are curious about puberty in boys, as it shows male anatomy in a non-threatening way, and most of the health and social topics are also fitting for a girl of the same age, and would show a girl that boys face many of the same social challeneges they also face, but from the boy's perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended by our school nurse........2007-01-06

I purchased on the recommendation of our school nurse for my 5th Grader. I read it first and was pleasantly surprised. Deffinitely not a "how to" manual. Clear, concise, kid friendly language.

5 out of 5 stars Great for teens!.......2007-03-16

This is an awesome book. I bought several that I use with a group of high school students. It's very informative and easy to read. Also has step-by-step suggestions for coping with issues such as homophobia, harassment, and coming out. An invaluable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Dealing with Teens? Get this!.......2004-12-06

This book is a must-have for any Library shelf that serves teens. It is written in a style appealing to teens and includes short, one or two page summaries of ways to cope with the many issues teens face when questioning their sexuality. It also provides excellent, current resources for teens, from crisis lines to 'safe' (moderated) chat sites. I especially enjoyed the section dealing with 'coming out' to parents and family. It provided experiences from other teens who have (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and also possible responses parents might have when a teen tells them he/she is gay. In addition, it listed possible, respectful ways to respond to less-than-accepting parents. A fantastic compilation of stories, insights, and resources for teens.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2004-05-24

i remember being a pre-teen, leafing through many books written for young women that followed an "our bodies ourselves" format. these books were ok, but never what i was really looking for. i didn't want information on how to ask boys to dance or how to apply lipstick- i wondered where the chapters entitled "when you don't feel like the rest or the girls" or "but what if i don't like boys?" were.

what a great help it would have been to have this book! the format is "hip" but not patronizing. while this book affirms the importance of pride and self-respect in queer or questioning young people, it also devotes pages to the concerns and dangers many queer teens face (safe sex, how to begin dating, facing intolerance). transgender issues and stories have their own chapter, as do homophobia and coming out. descriptive paragraphs are broken up by small autobiographical blurbs by young people describing their experiences with the topic at hand, and by smaller essays.

this book is a great place to begin for youth who are GLBTQ, questioning, or who would like to better understand their queer peers and friends.

This book, I feel was perfect for my daughter. It is very accurate, not played up to entertain the reader, but to educate the young reader. Very good book. 1 out of 5 stars Inspiring message, terrible book.......2004-06-20

i thought that the overall message of the book was fantastic, however the writing and story left a lot to be desired, there were even several gramatical errors, and spelling mistakes. When asked about this book i simply respond "a very inspiring message, but i wouldn't reccomend it as a book."

5 out of 5 stars This book was awesome!!!.......2002-06-01

This book is by far one of my favorites. A very encouraging book looking at your positive traits. A great way to improve your self-esteem and help others. This book is jam-packed with great things that are good for the soul. I highly recommend this book to everyone; even grown-ups. It is also a great book because it also tells you websites or books you can check into to gain more knowlege about a certain topic. I totally enjoyed this book, and it has helped me a lot!

5 out of 5 stars What every kid (adult) should read.......2002-01-18

What a well organized, motivational book on defining a person's character. Feeling like courage, friendship, integrity, empathy, caring, etc... For each term the author gives an story-like example and defines the meaning of the feeling, then gives examples and role playing questions of how to respond to ethical questions. A GREAT tool for parents and children. Plus websites and additional resources to understand terms. A wonderful book for parents to make sure their children have the character and responsivness to handle the world's problems. :>) GREAT BOOK! KUDDOS to the Author! I also recommend the American Girl Books as well.

5 out of 5 stars What Do You Stand For?.......2000-04-13

This is an exceptionally well written book. The author explains ethics in such a way that children can truly grasp the meaning. Each section contains a story about character in action, character dilmmas, activities, and additional resources on the topic. I highly recommend this to all parents.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide/resource for teens...as well as for parents & educators if you get the Leader's Guide too!.......2006-05-27

I find this book, despite its small size & simple layout, to be an excellent guide/resource for teens.

The analogy is interesting. When life is very stressful, it can feel as if you're in a jungle with lots of dangerous tigers --ferocious, hungry, invisible tigers, quietly stalking you.

It covers everything from being assertive to building relationships, taking risks, making decisions, staying healthy, dealing with fears, using positive self-talk, & even growing a funny bone. There is also a "Self-Care for Tiger Bites" section which offers ready "first aid" for teens who need quick relief.

Parents &/or educators who are also interested in this book, are advised to get hold of the Leader's Guide. It is designed to support & enhance the messages of the Student Book with a step-by-step curriculum in a dozen of easy-to-use sessions. It comes with two dozens of reproducible handout masters.

Kudos to the authors for these two excellent guides/resources!

I would strongly recommend readers to check out the publisher's website. They have an extensive repertoire of excellent guides/resources for kids, teens, parents as well as educators.

Adults working with teens will find this book a valuable resource for helping adolescents understand what happens when they are stressed to the limits of their coping ability. The section "Self-Care for Tiger Bites" offers immediate first aid for those times when fast relief is needed to relieve overwhelming levels of stress. Using this book, teenagers and adults alike can crack the whip and tame the stress within.

This is a wonderful tool to use when working with teens who are ready to deal with their experience of sexual abuse (abuse of other kinds also). Not only is this useful for clinicians, it can be modified and used by other providers, too. It seems that it is important for the client to be ready to do the work, however...

I have done some of the exercises by myself and some in a small group. I strongly recommend this workbook. I have a hard time putting the book down between exercises, because I truely feel that this book is helping me cope.

5 out of 5 stars "It Happened" helped me.......2002-06-11

I am a teenager and read this book because a friend recommended it to me. She had read about it in Seventeen magazine and knew that it related to some things I've been through. The exercises made me think about the past in a good way - a way that helped me see that I can be a good person no matter what I've been through. The psychologist who wrote this book knows teenagers. I felt like he knew me and knew just what I needed to work through my issues. Also, I loved the quotes from teenagers that were scattered through the book. If you need help working through sexual abuse, It Happened To Me can help you too.

5 out of 5 stars All teen and young adult survivors need this workbook.......2002-06-05

This workbook is just excellent! I have trouble putting it down! It manages to be relevant to a wide variety of teens, without being too technical, too cutesy, or too preachy. Each exercise is short (2-3 pages) but challenging. There are also quotes from teen survivors and sidebars that point out problem behaviors common in abuse survivors without being judgmental. As a college student, I'm a little too old to be the intended audience of this book (all the teens mentioned in here are between the ages of 13-18), but as someone who still has to deal with her parents on a regular basis, I appreciated that lots of the exercises here dealt with family matters under the assumption that you're still living and dealing with your family, something that's not in many of the adult books. Guys might not like that pretty much all the pronouns are "she" and "her", but otherwise it's still a very relevant book for every teen survivor. It can be completed by yourself, in a group, or as part of therapy. Topics covered include emotions and emotional manipulation, keeping secrets, impulsive behaviors, how to get along with other people, sex, suicide, and commitment to recovery. The emphasis is not on "name your disorder" but on returning to emotional health. Even if you have to make a secret trip to the bookstore and hide this book in the back of your closet, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars An Informative and Practical Book for Parents of ADD Teens.......2007-01-11

Finally, a book that really explains ADD in teenagers and how it affects their abilites and lives.... As a mother of a 13 year old boy with ADHD, I was lost. We were able to help him manage his ADHD until puberty hit. Suddenly, it was a whole new ballgame. None of our discipline techniques worked anymore. After reading this book, I have a much better understanding of the disease and how it really impairs people in certain aspects of daily functioning. Some of the behviors I thought were defiant, I now realize are part of the ADHD make up. This book provides explainations of how ADD affects teens depending on their personality type and which behaviors are normal teen behaviors and which are related to the ADD. It gives practical advice on how to handle discipline issues, how to deal with schools to help them better educate your teen and how to help your teen learn to function within the limits of his/her ADD. I am so glad I found this book!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to parenting an ADD teen........1997-04-10

Recently two of my four children were diagnosed with ADD. I began reading everything I could on the subject. Often the information was confusing, or presented in such a technical way as to be of little help. Giving Your ADD Teen a Chance is presented clearly and with great warmth. I felt good about my children's life. Ms. Weiss gives helpful, relevant advice, loaded with common sense. I have recommended this book to anyone I can find, including several mental health professionals. If your child is diagnosed with ADD, whether or not they have reached their teenage years, this is a MUST read.

A ton of easy to understand information for teens! My teen also really liked S.E.X. by Heather Corinna. Each gave her different information and covered simliar subjects differently.

5 out of 5 stars All Teen Girls Should Have this Empowering Book.......2007-03-07

If only this book had been around when I was a teen! Great, solid information shared in a straight forward way that will assist young girls in getting past the hypersexualization that they face today and move into a core of true self respect and self esteem. This book is a blessing.

5 out of 5 stars Life-long Reproductive Health=Education.......2007-02-22

As a physician specializing in fertility, I see a lot of chronic reproductive health problems (and their devastating consequences)in my adult patients that could have been prevented if the patient had been provided with quality reproductive education as a teenager. This book provides the information young women need to make decisions at a young age that will impact their health across the lifespan. Thank you, Toni for making my job easier and for preserving the reproductive health of the next generation.

3 out of 5 stars May not be appropriate if your teen is choosing abstinence.......2007-02-18

I own Toni's first book, "TCOYF" and it completely changed the way I look at my body and my cycles. So I was thrilled that she came out with this book for teens. I purchased it with the intent of giving it to my younger sister, but after reading it; I have decided to return it.

What I loved: The first two parts (Cycle Smart and Cycle Signals) cover all the basics on the female body that I guarentee your kids will never hear about in school. :) Toni discusses the different stages in a woman's cycle, including charting your fertility signs to help understand your body. The book is very well put together with fun illustrations and page layouts. The writing is smart and fun, and very easy to read.
This book does not teach FAM as a means of birth control. In fact, I was hopeful after reading the following in the introduction: "...this book is no more a sex-education manual than it is a primer on tampons."

What I didn't love: The third part of the book (Cycle Solutions) has a chapter called "From Cycle Savvy to Sex Smart" that seemed to contradict this statment in the intro. I will conceed that from a world/secular standpoint, this chapter is presented in a very balanced way. Most of the chapter is filled with stories of teenage girls' experiences with sex. The stories cover the spectrum, from "I had sex as a teen and regret it every day" to "I waited for just the right time with my boyfriend" and everything in between. If you or your daughter are proponents of abstinence, you will definitely want to look over this chapter before buying.

From a Christian standpoint, the information presented in this chapter is completely incongruent with what the Bible teaches. As much as I love Toni and everything she has done to empower women, and as much as I loved everything else about this book, this one chapter was enough for me to return it.

5 out of 5 stars great for daughters.......2007-01-12

I bought this for my teenage daughter having read the author's first book and having listened to her on local radio. I did not force the book on my daughter but simply left it on the table. I've watched my daughter pick it up and read from time to time and I can see she is absorbed at times. The book has a huge amount of biological science written into it yet the diagrams are illustrative of the concepts making it easier to read. We don't talk much about the topic but I am certain it is making a difference in my daughter's awareness which can only help me as a parent.

Book Description

A fifteen-year-old boy is walking through a swirling fog on his way to school when a voice calls out, "Come here. We need to talk." Out of the mist emerges an old man with a white beard. He is a fantastic figure, as wizardly as Merlin, as wise as Socrates, as peaceful as Buddha. Whoever he is, the old man has appeared on that very day to change the boy's life.

"You are old enough to learn about things," he says mysteriously. "And who is going to teach you but me?"

The old man gives the boy four days of "soul training," a time of riddles, tricks, parables, and fantastic twists that bring out surprising answers to each of four burning questions about spirituality:

Do I have a soul?
How do wishes come true?
What is the supreme force in the universe?
How can I change the world?

The boy was Deepak Chopra, who grew up to become an acclaimed writer and teacher about the same invisible things that the old man had taught him. Fire in the Heart is Dr. Chopra's first book for young adults. Its aim is to pass on this soul training to young readers.

"The old man with the white beard showed me the spiritual side of life," writes the author, "where real passion and excitement come from. So before you begin, take a deep breath. This story could turn out to be yours."

"[Spirit is] everywhere, making sure that everything is connected. The light from a star billions of light years away is the same light that makes plants grow here on earth. The plants give food; the food has allowed you to develop in your mother's womb; and today you look at that star with the eyes that the stars gave you. There's the cosmic connection."

This is an amazing book, to be read by people of all age groups.
There are a very few books which give a spiritual insight in such simple terms.
This is definetely one among the best of such books. It is as interesting as
a good fiction, with a very simple and effective message in each chapter.
The author makes each of the message reach straight into the heart of the
reader by the style he has used for writing.
