don't waste your money on this book or its strategy.......2007-10-05
First of all, the author has enough material for a magazine article at best and she has padded and stretched it into a book. That makes for an annoying read.
Secondly, her math is deceitful. She says to borrow the equity from your home at 8% and put that money to work getting an 8% return and you will end up with a huge pile of money. What about the payments? Oh, yeah. She subtracts those as a lump sum at the end from your pile of money. Everyone knows the payments have to made every month so if you're borrowing at 8% and getting an 8% return you're simply going to break even. If you're as smart as a fifth grader you know that math calculations have to be performed in the correct order or you'll get the wrong answer. She also gives an example of someone who could pay cash for a house but takes out a mortgage anyway and invests the money. She conveniently ignores the fact that the person could simply pay cash for the house and then invest what they would have made in payments each month and that money would grow to almost the same amount as her "safety fund"
The third problem with this strategy is that the only way to get this 8% tax free, totally safe return is to buy a questionable insurance product that she or her friends will be happy to sell you. Then you'll have the IRS looking over your shoulder.
I'm not a big fan of a mortgage free house for a number of reasons but if you're going to harvest equity and invest it, you'd better know what you're doing. For the average person it's way too risky.
Start saving some money by NOT buying this book.
This book has been done before, called Missed Fortune 101.......2007-09-22
Sad to see people trying to ride the coattails of another book and rip it off so blatantly. The orignal book called Missed Fortune 101 introduces the world to these strategies. Well Stop Sitting comes in and basically changes a word here and a word there to try and be different. For example Missed Fortune 101 talks about "going down the highway of life with one foot on the gas and one on the brake" Ms. Snow talks about going down the highway with 4 flat tires and a broken windshield...Come on!

I, too, was in awe after reading this book. The ideas are presented in a simple, easy to understand way, and it seems to me to be very logical. I'm no financial genius, rather a former math teacher and the numbers seem to work on paper. But, really, after the awe has worn off and reality hits, what's the catch? This seems too easy. If this idea has been in existance for several years, then why hasn't it caught on with the "masses?" Why don't more financial advisors recommend this? Is there something I'm missing or does it really work that simply and just nobody knows about it? Somebody....give me the real scoop!
Very, Very dangerous book.......2007-08-02
As I began to read this book, my first challenge was to get over the unearned arrogance of the author. Marion Snow may have a "scientific mind" and have a little experience in the mortgage industry selling people mortgages, but she is no financial planner.
The book is absolutely full of errors and misrepresentations of how some very complex financial products work. She literally demonizes financial planning professionals who have spent years of their lives helping clients and studying the ever changing landscape of both financial planning, estate planning, as well as the Internal Revenue Code.
Some of her VERY dangerous errors are as follows:
First, nearly all of her calculations discuss saving taxes at a 30 or 33% tax rate. While this sounds good, the average American is nowhere near the 33% tax bracket. The 33% tax bracket does not begin for most married Americans until they have over $195,000 of annual income.
Secondly, the insurance products that she describe do not function as she indicates. On page 110, she casually mentions that her insurance strategy will work as "long as you are careful not to deplete your cash value." She does not mention that the "tax advantaged policy loans" she advocates are 1)charged interest by the insurance company, and 2) taxable if the policy lapses in later years. Additionally, she neglects to mention that Universal life policies have increasing costs which will cause them to lapse using her strategy.
Third, all of her calculations are "assumed and hypothetical." They do not address real numbers. About halfway though the book she indicates she "got her insurance license" just to verify her findings. Unfortunately, an insurance license is viewed by most credentialed financial planners with the same reverence that training wheels are viewed by Olympic bicycle racers...
Fourth, her mortage strategies advocate taking illegal tax deductions - the tax deductions she describes are not allowable to the degree the advocates, in the tax brackets she uses as examples. The deductions "phase out" well before a taxpayer can use them to the degree she illustrates. Simply put - the numbers are INCORRECT.
Ms. Snow should spend a few years in school and learn what she is talking about - and a few more years working with real world financial clients -before being arrogant enough to throw stones at those who do.
She is flat wrong in many areas and will hurt a great many people who take her cutesy approach to financial planning seriously.

What's wrong with Stop Sitting on Your Assets.......2007-07-29
This book uses fuzzy math to reach predetermined conclusions.
No only is the math flawed, but what's worse is that the book ignores the tax code and 264(a)3 specifically (which dramatically affects the concepts discussed in his books).
There is no such thing as a tax free, money management free, expense free "side fund" as she discusses in this book.
It is clear that the author does not understand how money grows in the real world and does not understand life insurance (which is ironic since the book is about building wealth using indexed equity life insurance).
Of all the books in the marketplace which discuss Equity Harvesting, this is by far the worst one.

Amazing book.......2007-10-10
What a blessing this book is - a must read! Safely Home is an incredibly written story, with wonderful characters, but yet such a powerful message about the persecuted Christians across the world. It certainly puts our aches and pains in perspective, and gave me a bigger heart for both the saved and unsaved. What a blessing to be able to live in a country where I'm free to worship the one true God. I will definitely be praying for the persecuted Christians as often as I can.

I highly recommend this book to everyone! What an amazing gift Randy Alcorn has given the world. It's a wonderful way of presenting how God works in these two character's lives and leaves the reader questioning their own purpose for His Kingdom. The author also gives us an exciting glimpse to what's waiting for us beyond. It's truly an amazing tale that will leave you thinking and yearning to make a difference.

My mother recommended this book to me. At first, I thought that it was going to be boring. Far from it. After looking at the inside jacket of the book and seeing the picture, it all made sense. We are all trying to get safely home to our FATHER! This book prepared me for my grandmother's transition from here to her real home. Thank you Randy Alcorn for writing this book. It also showed me how I take some things for granted. I have quite a few bibles and there are people who are not allowed to have one. Gives you something to think about.
Riveting, compelling, inspiring!.......2007-03-11
There are books that move you, there are books that rattle you, and there are books that force you to examine your life. This books does all that and more.
Though fictional, the story has a full sense of veracity. The author has done an oustanding job of researching the history and tradition of China, from the prophetic aspects found in some of the Chinese written characters, to the reality of communist oppression, to the higher reality of the persecuted Body of Christ in that part of the world. The author aligns all these elements with the Word of God, such that the Truth is clearly visible in comparison to what the world understands and views as religion.
Those who have eyes to see, and ears to hear, will be compelled to understand that freedom of religion and materialistic abundance only breed complacency and apathy. And who wants an apathetic, lukewarm church? No wonder the church is loosing ground in the developed countries where liberals are doing everything they can to be rid of religion. We should not wait for persecution to flare up to push us into being boiling hot or freezing cold. Is this the day you die? Is this the day you seek the face of the Lord with all you have in you?

BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ!!! I've read Safely Home four times in the last 3 months. I would finish it and put it away but after a few days pick it up and start over. Every time I read this book, I find new insight and renew growth in my faith. Mr. Alcorn has woven a stirring story that highlights the difference between a country with free religion and one with very limited freedoms.

Great Soap Book!.......2007-09-25
I purchased three books on soapmaking, and in my opinion, this one is by far the very best! The author's instructions are clear, concise, and the techniques are simplified and de-mystified over other soapmaking books. I made my first batch of "Anne's Shea Butter Supreme" today, and the soap turned out beautifully without a glitch. I also had a newbie question about a product I purchased, so I emailed the author. Anne responded back quickly and was very helpful, a fact that I greatly appreciated! I can't wait to use my soap and make more of the recipes from the book.

Anne makes soapmaking simple -- I'm a newbie and I'm still learning. This book gives just enough information to educate, without overwhelming. She challenges the "soap theology" of most of the other books, but it makes sense.

After reading all the great reviews I was expecting a lot more than this. The first disappointment was how thin the book was - just over a hundred pages. Then it's all questions and answers (the ones the author thinks are important) and a couple of recipes which aren't very great either. I don't recommend this book for beginners, it won't tell you how to make soap. And it's definitely not a book for experienced soapmakers who, like I, have been making soap for years. You won't find anything new in there.
I guess this book would be for the in-between soapmakers. You've made a couple of batches and have a few questions. Though, personally, I think you'd find those answers in most good soapmaking books.

This book has everything you need to start making soap. The instructions and illustrations for the cold-process of soap making are easy to follow, the recipes are simple and produce great soap every time. Anne's Shea Butter Soap is a very versatile recipe, and her references to other sources are invaluable. Would love to see the author produce a volume of soap recipes!

I wasn't entirely certain what this book was about based upon the blurb on the back cover, which is actually a quote from the foreword by Doug Phillips, nor was I certain after reading the synopsis and reviews here on Amazon. However, I did procure a title of it after reading an excerpt from the book on the internet regarding the differences between a Greek and a Hebrew, biblical education model based upon discipleship.
And, am I ever glad I did! Our family has planned on homeschooling since before our first daughter was born, but we are new Christians, only saved last year, which has led to our completely re-evaluating our goals for homeschooling, priorities for our family etc. As a result, we have been researching, reading, and learning about different approaches to Christian homeschooling. There are so many different approaches, philosophies, curriculums etc. available that it is easy to feel adrift amongst all of the options. This book sets our feet back on solid ground, examining the model for education that God has set out for families in his Word, while covering so much more. Not choosing an approach, or a philosophy of education, but focusing on teaching through relationships (rather than curriculums), the way that God shows us.
The author's heart is set firstly and foremostly training our children in the way they should go, to know God, love Him and serve Him are our ultimate goals in homeschooling, and we cannot lose sight of that goal. ALL things are for His glory, and we must seek first the kingdom of God, then all other things will be added unto us.
This title also examines issues that are certain to be controversial amongst many Christian families, but that critically need to be examined if our families are to be led to honour Christ in ALL that we do; covering topics as diverse as: the suitability of competitive sports for Christian families, the servant leader role of husbands in the home, self-employment as it relates to the discipling of chilren, the role of grandparents in homeschooling families, the role of the local church in supporting and discipling homeschooling families, and so much more!
Ladies - I know that we often do much more reading and homeschooling research than our husbands do, as they are often busy outside of the home. However, this would be a key title to pull out of the stack for him to read, as it is very encouraging and strong in it's message of calling father's to turn their hearts to their children, placing the responsibility firmly on their shoulders.
I just can't say enough about this book. If you are alone in your homeschooling convictions within your local church body, this would be an excellent title to share with others. A passionate call home, to re-establish the biblical model for families, just beautiful!
Right on Target.......2006-07-27
I found this book to be right on target. I needed a book for my pastor to read, so he could understand my view on the church and homeschooling. Too many families these days are fractured, in that they send off their children to daycare or school all day, and then on Sundays they send them off to classes and "children's church". This book addresses all these issues and more. It describes a Biblical model of what a covenential family should be.
Good Ideas, but shoddily executed.......2006-06-25
I really wanted to like this book.
Its primary thesis is that God has designed humanity so that strong family relationships are the foundation of both strong individuals and a strong society, and that the current state of the typical family in American society is woeful.
So far, so good. I agree heartily. What I wanted from there was a cogent exposition of why this is true and the solutions to it.
Instead, Safely Home has some good ideas, but the material is poorly organized and has multiple grammar and punctuation errors. Arguments put forth often have logical flaws and successive ideas are often disconnected. There is no way that I could hand this book to someone to influence their convictions about homeschooling or other conservative stances; its mediocre style and content would likely hinder rather than help.
I applaud Mr. Eldredge and Vision Forum for publishing on this important topic, but God would have been more glorified if they had employed a good copy editor.
This book changed my life!.......2005-01-27
Except for the Bible, of course, no other book has had the impact on my life, as Safely Home did. I wish I'd read it before I began homeschooling, as I would have been much more confident that it was the right thing to do. God used this little book to remove the spiritual blinders from my eyes, as to what has gone wrong in our country and society. Many homeschooling families leave the church out of frustration, but this was the first of two books, which I discovered that discusses the need for the church to embrace the homeschooling movement with open arms!

I had a hard time putting this book down. It is so honest, and truly reflects the emotional and spiritual 'roller coaster' of adoption. As an adoptive mother I could relate to so many of the experiences and feelings that Kristin shares. The author's spiritual relfections are thought provoking and inspiring. This is a much needed resource for Christian adoptive families and will be especially helpful to those just beginning their adoption journey.

I can not recommend this book highly enough for Christian adoptive parents. The author describes her journey, and that of her family, through the adoption of two Vietnamese boys. She details God's development of her character through the waiting and uncertainties of the process, and shares about what she learned about such topics as prayer, fear, waiting, God's goodness, pain, and worship. Mrs. Wong's story has been a chief means of encouragment and exhortation for my husband and I as we have felt the refining fire in our own hearts during our own adoptive journey.

We hear about so-called designer adoptions involving Hollywood stars, and while the press they receive helps bring attention to the need for adoption, the truth is that there are many people who would like to know more about the actual experiences of real people. Kristin and Phil Wong were parents of two natural children when they made the decision to adopt two Korean boys. This is their story told from a Christian perspective, because it is important for anyone interested in adoption to know that it is an act of Christian love and not just a spur of the moment, politically correct thing to do in order to get good PR. I doubt if anyone reading this book will not be deeply touched by the experiences of the Wongs.

This book has applications for any Christian in understanding his/her own adoption as God's child. I plan to recommend this book to my friends, especially those that are adopting children into their family or who have been adopted into a family themselves. My favorite aspect of the book is the author's honesty about her own faith struggles in waiting on the Lord throughout the adoption process.

I came from India to USA to visit my garnd son in Minneapolis.While in Hennepen County libraray I have seen plenty of books and one of these was "HOME REMEDIES" by Michel VanStraten published in 1998. after going through the contents ,to my surprise EUREKA ! I found init ,both conventional and compemantary medicines for common ailments viz Allopathy,Homeopathy,Naturopathy,Herbopathy,Aromopathy,Occpressure,Alexanders Techs,Yoga,and grandmom's home remidie's etc.This gives option to anybody to go in for any type of medicine within his reach as these medicines prevent diseases in the initital stage itself.This is a rare goldbin to the poor and middleclass.Had it contained Magnetic Therpy,CosmicRay therpy,and Deshanes systems and Unanisystem of Medicines it would be more commen and universal. However prevention is better than cure I would like to carry this trusure to India.
