Customer Reviews:
A resource book that lives up to its potential!.......2004-01-21
As I said: A resource book that lives up to its potential! Every book chosen is high-quality (anyone experienced in caring for under-threes will recognize virtually every title). Every activity chosen has developmental--not educational, but developmental--value. The authors avoid the ABCs and 123s for babies and toddlers and focus on what is really important: language exposure, interaction with loving caregivers, and sensory experiences. And the book even lives up to its title. Unlike so many books "for infants and toddlers" that really only serve toddlers, this book offers an equally complete and interesting infant section--what a bonus!

A wonderful book.......2007-01-12
I will always keep this book even though my son is older now. Would be something to read to my grandchildren.
Grew with my child.......2003-06-17
I bought this book when my son was 2 months old, now he's 2 years old and he STILL loves it. I love the illustrations of the baby. This is a time when my son can appreciate what the words mean and not just how well they sound together. I'm going to find other books from this group to add to his collection. I'm looking now to purchase one for a friend who's having her first child.
Our Newborn - Our Perfect Baby.......2000-09-29
This little book is our favorite. Our son is 3 months old now and we have been reading this book to him since he was just one week old. He loves to focus on the baby's face and wiggles all over. It's wonderful to have multi-cultural books to offer children. Our baby looks like the baby in the book :) We can't wait to collect the others in this series!
BABY LOVES TO SEE IT.......2000-05-29
This book is a delight! My child loves to look at the bright illustrations of other baby faces, and loves it when I get to the part that says "You are my perfect baby!" The message of this books is unconditional, affecionate love. Great text! He quiets down whenever I open the pages!

20 stories of hope, heroism, heartache, and healing as told by the parents of children treated in the NICU.
Customer Reviews:
i've seen much better nicu books!.......2002-11-27
this book was not as captivating and engrossing as other nicu books by the parents. the stories seemed to gloss over, there are a lot of pages, but there are pictures, etc that dont use as much space for words. the stories of the children were not as detailed, and it didnt tug at my heart the way other books have. instead, i recommend-"living miracles-stories of hope from premature babies" by kimberly powell and kim wilson, editors. this one is more detailed, gripping, and heartfelt.
Recommended to anyone who has ever had a baby in the NICU.......1999-03-02
"Alone" is how parents feel when they first walk into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Spouses even feel alone from each other. Husband and wife have planned and dreamed of this birth together, but a baby born either too soon or sick leaves everyone alone and terrified. The tragedy of this unexpected (but much too frequent) childbirth makes the book, "You Are Not Alone" of tremendous importance to new parents of a baby in the NICU. The many true stories (and their realistic pictures) can help parents to realize that they are in a place where pioneer parents can help them. At the beginning the NICU experience is like being lost in a maze with no end. But "You Are Not Alone" helps new, very lost parents to realize that there are experienced guides that wish to help them. The writers of "You Are Not Alone" are a few of those guides. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever had a baby in the NICU, even it it is decades ago. I also recommend that every tertiary hospital include it in their library of books for parents of high-risk babies and their gift store. And all libraries that believe that books on child rearing are essential should put this on the required list.
Michael T. Hynan, PhD, Clinical Psychology from University of Iowa. He has taught in the Psychology Department at U of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1974. He is the father of a premature baby, Chris, born in 1980 at 30 weeks gestation weighing 1200 g. Dr. Hynan also does research on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in high-risk parents. Dr. Hynan is the author of "The Pain of Premature Parents: A Psychological Guide for Coping."
Whatever happens, you too can survive........1999-01-19
For many new parents, there are two major sources of difficulty around coping with having a newborn in the NICU: (1) Fear that their intense feelings are abnormal, and (2) feeling singled out by tragic fate. This book can help. Filled with a wide variety of personal stories written by parents who've "been there," it offers comfort and reassurance to new parents who need to know that others have struggled with situations similar to theirs; that others have felt the same emotions.
The mothers and fathers who contributed to this book are not professional writers--some are more eloquent than others. Some parents merely skate on the surface. But to the editor's credit, these are not sugar-coated stories of medical miracles or stoicism. The ups and downs, joys and sorrows, triumphs and fumblings are all here. Some babies survive and thrive, others continue to have medical complications or developmental lags; some babies die. Parents share their fears, challenges and failings, as well as insights, lessons learned and blessings found. They admit that while dealing with a sick baby is a labor of love, it also takes a lot of patience, time, and energy. It's not easy. But therein lies the richness of their lives.
As new parents read these stories, they will be struck by the fact that their own deep feelings of anger, guilt, helplessness, fear, and despair are normal, not crazy or overreacting. They can see that other parents have emerged from the dark days in the NICU. They'll come away empowered, knowing that they can face their baby's fate and their emotions. Most importantly, they'll acquire hope--that whatever happens, they too can survive.
By Deborah L. Davis, Ph.D. Psychologist and author of "Empty Cradle, Broken Heart," Fulcrum, 1991; 1996; co-author of "The Emotional Journey of Parenting Your Premature Baby," NICU Ink, in progress.
Each story is testimony to the courage of human spirit!.......1999-01-16
"You Are Not Alone" is a collection of stories written by parents who have experienced the profound anguish of having their fragile newborns transferred immediately after birth to the life support systems of neonatal intensive care units.
Most of the stories are about babies who were extremely premature, but space is also given to full-term babies born critically ill due to unexpected complications. Each story is unique in language and detail, but common features of the experience emerge - feelings of intense fear and danger, the tilting of a once-benevolent universe into something boundless and unpredictable, the loneliness and alienation that accompanies the loss of a precious dream.
Each story is testimony to the courage and tenacity of human spirit. For parents who have known the unexpected birth of a critically ill baby, the stories help make sense of the experience. There is tremendous comfort and reassurance to be found in these pages. For families and friends who may feel at a loss to know how to support parents at the center of such a crisis, "You Are Not Alone" provides insight and guidance.
"You Are Not Alone" is beautifully presented and illustrated. The stories are accompanied by photographs that span the range from medically fragile newborn to bright-eyed adolescent. Not all babies survive, and this is a true reflection of reality. Not all the babies emerge unscathed from the nightmare of their early life, and this is also reality.
Children's Medical Ventures is to be congratulated for producing a book that speaks directly to parents, which recognizes the depth of their experience, and the life-affirming journey towards healing. The subtitle of "You Are Not Alone" speaks of heroism, and this is the underlying message of the book - that the NICU experience is darker and more difficult than most of us can ever imagine, but we are also stronger than we could have imagined.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, Rythmic and Fun.......2003-10-12
We first checked this book out from the library and our baby loved it so much that I was online within a few days to buy it. The text is beautiful and my baby loved to listen to it and turn the pages by himself. All we have to do it set him on our lap and pick up this book and his face lights up with glee. He'll even stay still while we read it to him 3 or 4 times. Quite a feat for a 9 month old! Definitely worth the money!
One of our favorites!.......2002-01-06
We bought this book when our daughter was a newborn and she's always loved it! Now that she's two, she still gets a kick out of reading it! However, I recommend that you not buy this item online because there's a mirror on the last page and some copies of the book have a blurry mirror! You're better off buying it in a store to make sure that the book isn't defective!
Do You Know New?.......2000-08-02
This is my baby's favorite book. We started reading this to her when she was just a few weeks old and the text has a great rhythm, which she loves. At 10 months now, she picks that book out and loves to flip through it. It's a durable book, has been with us everywhere, and is a good size and light weight that it's perfect for little hands.
The illustrations are great - not the blinding primary colors you often see in some baby books.
my baby's first favorite book.......2000-06-14
Excellent! I got this as a recommendation from another mom who's baby liked this book best out of all his books. My baby developed an interest in this book before all others.
A great starter book for baby.......2000-05-10
We purchased this book, along with Where is Maisy?, for our baby when she was only 4 months old and both quickly became her favorites. 5 months later she still reaches for these 2 consistently. Do You Know New holds her attention for its sing-song rhythm, colorful pictures, and she seems to really focus on the wonderfully illustrated childrens' faces. It's a great starter book for babies, even the very young.
Book Description
Children love to hear the stories about what they were like and all the wonderful, amazing, interesting, and funny things they did when they were 1-year-olds. They also have endless questions about the wonderful year they were 1.
Why do 1-year-olds want to talk all the time?
Why do they ask so many questions?
Why do they touch or grab almost everything they can?
Why do they want to open almost everything they can?
Why do most of them still suck their thumbs or fingers?
How do they learn to talk in sentences?
How do they learn to walk up and down stairs -- and run?
Why do they still wear diapers?
What's a "toddler"?
The award-winning team who created Hello Benny! What It's Like To Be A Baby has created a second picture book for their series, Growing Up Stories -- books that tell enchanting stories and fascinating facts about the first five years of life.
Go! Go! Maria! tells the story of Maria and celebrates her second year of life -- from walking on her own for the very first time to running from room to room, from learning how to say "No!" "Me!" and "Mine!" to asking her big brother Percy "What dat?" to pinching her friend Molly, and to singing her own name on her second birthday. Go! Go! Maria! captures the remarkable story of how 1-year-olds "grow up."
Combining a beautifully told story with a myriad of fascinating facts about 1-year-olds, Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley have created another timeless book for children to enjoy and for families to share together.
Customer Reviews:
Teaching its readers how one-year-old children are.......2003-09-13
Go! Go! Maria! is the second picture book in the outstanding "Growing Up Stories" picture book series written by Robie H. Harris and illustrated by Michael Emberley. Go! Go! Maria! is a warm and educational story about what one-year-old children are like. Following the adventures of a young girl living the second year of her life, it has many asides teaching its readers how one-year-old children are, to the slow process of learning to walk, to thumb-sucking, potty training, and more. Go! Go! Maria! is recommended for young readers as a thoroughly enjoyable and informative read which highlighted throughout with playful full-color illustrations. Also very strongly recommended for school and community library collections is the first volume in the "Growing Up Stories" series: Hello Benny! What It's Like To Be A Baby...

Book Description
Learning to read begins in early infancy. Poems to Learn to Read By celebrates the early phases of this process and provides parents and teachers of young children with tools to support their emerging language and literacy.
Poems to Learn to Read By is two books in one. It is a collection of poems that children from birth to school age will enjoy with adults. Some of the poems are humorous, some are informative, and some are evocative or instructive. Some tell stories, and others simply play with sounds and words. The poems address the interests, feelings, and questions of young children in words that they can understand and enjoy. And many of the poems lend themselves to acting out, singing, chanting, or choral reading. Poems to Learn to Read By is also a valuable guide for caregivers, early childhood educators, and parents. Authors Betty Bardige and Marilyn Segal offer information and ideas on how to use the poems to strengthen children's language, build their literacy skills, help them manage strong emotions, and enhance their relationships.
Customer Reviews:
A collection of poems that children from birth to school age will enjoy reading with adults.......2005-12-10
Poems to Learn to Read By: Building Literacy with Love is a collection of poems that children from birth to school age will enjoy reading with adults, and it is also a useful resource for instilling a love of reading in young children. Each poem has a brief text follow-up about the verse's origins, or ideas for helping children sound out difficult words, tips on helping the very young adapt to new challenges, and more. Valuable as both a literacy and parenting resource, Poems to Learn to Read By is highly recommended especially for bedtime or naptime reading. For example, the following poem teaches young children about the letter Y as well as about sharing toys. "My Favorite Toy": I have a yellow yo-yo / And I can make it go / Down and up and round the world. / Yes, either fast or slow. // Would you like to use my yo-yo? / You can try to make it sleep. / The yo-yo is yours to use today, / But it is mine to keep.
Book Description
An activity can pass the time. An experience can change a life. More than ever before, caregivers can embrace the joy of seeing young children learn from the everyday experiences in their lives. Picking up where its predecessor left off, More Infant and Toddler Experiences contains over 100 engaging ideas to fill infants and toddlers' lives with experiences that reflect and celebrate each child's development. Meant to last a lifetime - as opposed to simply passing the time - these experiences help make the most of the caring interactions caregivers have with children.
The ideas contained in this sequel to the popular Infant and Toddler Experiences are based specifically on infant/toddler development rather than a watered down version of preschool practices. A comprehensive resource, More Infant and Toddler Experiences will give both novice and experienced infant/toddler caregivers distinctive approaches and new experiences to try as they "grow themselves" in the field. All while building trust between themselves and the children in their care.
