Customer Reviews:
good grades cost a bit more.......2007-07-20
use this to insure your grades are good. many lazy teachers use questions from here for the test.
Great book for every nursing student.......2007-05-13
2 volume set is lighter to carry, so definitely opt for this one.
There are many high quality pictures illustrating various diseases that aid learning the material. Some of the pictures are scary though.
The book contains lots of medical terminology that, at times, hard to understand if the concept was not known previously.
Great Med Surg Text.......2007-04-18
I like to get to the point. This book has lots of information that is put together well. One of the best things this book did was have care plans laid out in each chapter. These basically act as a snap shot of what to look for, and the nursing interventions you would perform as a nurse. That makes studying for your exams in nursing school a little easier. My wife's nursing school used Lippincott's Med Surg book, and I have to say that compared to that text this one gets to the point much quicker. I was a little disappointed that this book glances over some of the pathophysiology (I would have preferred that it was a little more in depth here), and that it spends way too much time going over Anatomy and Physiology. All nursing students have to take a Anatomy and Physiology course not every school provides a pathophysiology class. All in all I was pleased with it. However, this book does tend to ramble from time to time.
OK-but full of mistakes.......2007-04-18
The book is ok. Not the greatest. Our class found a lot of mistakes in this text and the publisher even sent one of us a new edition because of this. We actually recommended they ditch this books so next years students do not have to go through this txt
Another Nursing Student.......2007-04-15
I really like Lewis' Med-Surg book. It gives information needed to provide effective, safe, ethical nursing care.
It's not all about what might be on the NCLEX, you know. This text is very good about stating what you need to know for patient care, and I really found that what I read in this book was what was told to me on my clinical rotation.
I would not sell this book back even if I could because I think is the best Nursing book I have.

Med-Surg Must Have.......2007-06-23
I used this book throughout my advanced Med-Surg class, and it was very helpful. Also useful were the study questions at the end of each chapter with very detailed rationals. The questions were very similar to my in-class exam questions.

Book is good great for NCLEX style Q&A with rationals, a must have for MED-SURG Nursing Library, but was missing the CD rom
Great book for a cheap buy.......2005-07-08
This book is good for all medical-surgical nursing classes. It helped me out a lot when I found out about this book in second semester. It helped to improve my grades by focusing on what the nure must look for----signs and symptoms, interventions, etc. I would recommend this book for any serious nursing student out there who knows how to use resources like this effectively.
medical- Surgical review book.......2003-12-27
I have used this book all semester and plan to use it for next semester also. It is very well written. It is alot easier to understand then a textbook. I found it easier to study from this book, along with my notes, then reading a text book. It breaks down everything for you into a outline. Good book I've already ordered another review book for Pediatrics
Worth their weight in gold!.......2000-06-09
This book and the rest in the series(they have all you need for BSN program) were irreplacable to me in my BSN studies. I just graduated one of the hardest programs in the state with a 3.642 GPA. The Lippincott series really made a difference. I didn't have them my first semester, but second semester with the books my grades jumped! The professors were not familiar with the books but I followed along in class with them page by page. A great investment and now a perfect reference tool

Not good for the shelf exam!.......2007-05-17
I bought this book to study for the Introduction to Physical Diagnosis shelf exam, which I took two weeks ago. It did not help at all for the exam. The scope of the questions in this book were way off from the questions on the shelf, and the questions in this book were also harder than the questions on the shelf. Maybe this book would help for other exams, such as the medicine shelf, but it is NOT good for the physical diagnosis shelf!!
Surprisingly useful for Step I.......2002-11-10
I used this book for the physical dx shelf exam at the end of our 2nd year clinical methods course. The book was absolutely essential for this exam, and indeed proved very helpful for step I as well. All questions were in vignette format, as is Step I. In contrast with some other books in the PreTest series, the questions were consistent and of an appropriate level of difficulty. The answers are extensive and helpful as well. THE QUESTIONS IN THIS BOOK WERE ACTUALLY FUN TO DO!!

Organized according to the certification examination for CRNAs, this review book presents 1000 classroom-tested questions, accurate answers, comprehensive rationales and references. Plus, it includes a 3 1/2" disk for Windows(tm) or Macintosh(r) which puts every question at users' fingertips.
Customer Reviews:
good exposure.......2003-05-27
This review book is good for exposure to alot of different questions. There are a few errors in both the text and the CD-ROM. There are a few questions with miskeyed answer choices but correct rationales, but there are also a few mistyped or misworded questions. This review is good for exposure to alot of questions, and quick rationales (with references to texts), and the CD-ROM is formatted much like the computer testing is set up. My suggestion is if you feel that a question is answered erroneously, look it up, you may be right.
Quality Questions- but several errors in CD-ROM.......2002-02-21
I purchased this book in June of 2000 from Amazon.com. I've been told the more questions you are exposed to, the better you get at answering them. The book and CD provided a nice variety of questions, with brief rationale for correct answers, but be careful of the CD-ROM. In several instances, the answers were incorrectly programmed. It hasn't been the best review I've seen, but it is one of the few with a CD-ROM.

Customer Reviews:
really unhelpful..........2003-10-17
I just took (and passed!) the adult AANP computer based certification test...and I feel compelled to write a review of this study guide: the questions in this book did not reflect, in any way, questions on the exam. Even worse, the questions in the book were so esoteric and difficult, it almost lead me to believe I didn't at all prepare well enough...when in fact I had. I highly recommend the "ANP cert. review" book by Zerwekh, Claborn and Carter (Eds.)...it closely resembles the AANP adult exam, and was an excellent guide in terms of letting me know what areas I needed to study more, and which areas I was well versed in.
Excellent review book!.......2003-06-28
I purchased this to study for the AANP exam and was very well prepared. The questions were very close to the exam ones. Definitely buy this book and you will be well prepared for your adult certification exam.
Worth the money.......2002-09-07
I bought this book and also attended a review course taught by Sally Miller. She focuses on what you really need to know to do well on the Adult NP exam. Many of the questions in this book were similar to those in the test. By purchasing this book and borrowing another prep book (FNP based) from a friend, I was well prepared for the exam and did quite well. Best of luck!
Excellent Study Guide.......2002-03-03
This is an excellent review and study guide for the ANCC family nurse practitioner examination. I recommend it to all new graduates and others that are preparing for the certification exam.

I used the set to prepare for the American Academy Certification Exam. The questions in the book seemed to be about the same difficulty as the ones on the exam. I liked how each chapter began with a review. When the time got closer and cramming began, I just skimmed the chapters and questions.

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly helpful!.......2006-03-16
This was a great review for the Step 2 CS Exam. I hadn't seen a patient for 6 months before I took the exam, and after I'd read this book and practiced all the cases I felt very confident. Highly recommended.
fair.......2006-03-08
Good to practice hystory taking and to try to think what's more important to ask. Good, but you need more than this for the exam.
Pass this up.......2006-03-02
I bought this book in an attempt to save some money -- I was also considering First Aid, but didn't want to spend more than 20 bucks given how much money has already gone into this silly test. Unfortunately, my gamble didn't pay off. This book is alright - has a basic overview of the test format and what to expect as well as 20 sample cases. However, I recently took a peek at a copy of First Aid for CS, and found it to be much more complete. It has several very simple and high-yield test taking tips that Blueprints lacks, and has much more thorough explanations of the sample cases. So I sucked it up and forked over some money for a used copy of First Aid, and feel like I will be better prepared. I also realized that, given the expenditure on this test, I'd rather invest a few extra bucks in my study materials to ensure I don't have to retake this sucker.
I PASSED WITH THIS BOOK.......2005-07-26
It wasn't the only book that I purchased, but it was the only one that I needed!
This book was an easy, organized read that helped me to understand the format of the exam and what the examiners were looking for. Most importantly, I learned who was scoring me and how. This knowledge REALLY helped me to focus HOW I took the exam. Also vital were the practice cases. While I used separate notecards to test myself, the author provides plenty of space to jot down thoughts and answers. Scoring myself helped me to identify my weak areas so I could focus my study. The only down side is the inability to time yourself as you would in a real testing scenario - THIS IS AS CLOSE AS IT GETS!

Book Description
One of the most challenging tasks facing clinicians today is the assessment of patients' capacities to consent to treatment. The protection of a patient's right to decide, as well as the protection of incompetent patients from the potential harm of their decisions, rests largely on clinicians' abilities to judge patients' capacities to decide what treatment they will receive. However, confusing laws and the complicated ethical issues surrounding the concept of competence to consent have made the process of competence assessment intimidating for many clinicians. Health professionals--physicians, medical students, residents, nurses, and mental health practitioners--have long needed a concise guidebook that translates the issues for practice. That is what this book accomplishes. This volume is the product of an eight-year study of patients' capacities to make treatment decisions--the most comprehensive research of its kind. The authors describe the place of competence in the doctrine of informed consent, analyze the elements of decision-making, and show how assessments of competence to consent to treatment can be conducted within varied general medical and psychiatric treatment settings. The book explains how assessments should be conducted and offers detailed, practice-tested interview guidelines to assist medical practitioners in this task. Numerous case studies illustrate real-life applications of the concepts and methods discussed. Grisso and Appelbaum also explore the often difficult process of making judgments about competence and describe what to do when patients' capacities are limited. A timely, practical handbook relevant to every medical specialty, Assessing Competence to Consent to Treatment will benefit a wide array of medical practitioners--including physicians, medical students, residents, nurses, and other allied health professionals--who need to assess the mental competence of patients in their everyday practice. It will also interest ethicists and moral philosophers, as well as geriatricians and clinical psychologists working with cognitively impaired patients.

- Quick, effective analysis of different patient scenerios
- Belongs in every doctor's coat pocket.

Book Description
Written by physicians skilled at coaching colleagues in physician-patient communication, this pocket guide presents practical strategies for handling a wide variety of difficult patient interviews. Each chapter presents a hypothetical scenario, describes effective communication techniques for each phase of the interaction, and identifies pitfalls to avoid. The presentation includes examples of physician-patient dialogue, illustrations showing body language, and key references. This edition includes new chapters on caring for physician-patients, communicating with colleagues, disclosing unexpected outcomes and medical errors, shared decision making and informed consent, and teaching communication skills. Other new chapters describe clinical attitudes such as patience, curiosity, and hope.
Customer Reviews:
Quick, effective analysis of different patient scenerios.......2004-09-16
This is an effective, concise tool to help any medical student with virtually any patient encounter. It's easy to read, accurate and useful.
Strengths: Brief, imaginative and educational on several levels.
Weaknesses: Tends to pidgeon-hole patients, and approach them like problems, not people.
Belongs in every doctor's coat pocket........1999-08-20
Here's a `Field Guide' destined to become dog-eared from regular use. Consider Patient X who gets mad, no matter what you do; Family B whose mother died unexpectedly on the operating table; or Patient A who can't quite commit to taking blood pressure meds. You'll find ways to better communicate with them -- or any of your patients for that matter.
Sneak a peek into the Guide's Table of Contents to find tips for specific encounters. In just 90 seconds of reading, you can learn enough to get through an impasse. If you do nothing more than learn how to use the "Pearls" at the end of each chapter, your work will be easier. --Mary K. Kouri, Ph.D. Editor, "Quality Improvement/Total Quality Management" newsletter
An excellent "how-to" of challenging medical interviews.......1999-08-15
This Field guide is a concise paperback full of pithy one-page descriptions of challenging patients along with suggested solutions, including the exact words one might use to "unstick" an interview that is stuck. Many of these vignettes will be familiar to the medical professional, including the list-bringer, the narcotic abuser, etc. However, it is notable that many of these techniques are applicable to conversations throughout our daily lives. A must for medical professionals and students who find interviewing a "lost art" and want to learn basic as well as advanced techniques for self-improvement.
