The Sears' Family are geniuses.......2007-09-04

Don't misinterpret the meaning of attachment parenting..........2007-06-18
I have noticed by reading a few of the negative reviews for this book people are misinterpreting "ap" as letting your child "rule the roost" and have no boundaries. That is absolutely untrue! The premise of attachment parenting is to follow those instincts that are innate to every parent! I did not, by any means, rub my choices in anyone's face, but because I did practice AP I received a lot of flack from strangers, family members, coworkers etc. It's like the concept intimidated them! My children have strict rules and guidelines and are extremely respectful. They also share better than most children their age and I am a firm believer it is because of the way they are raised. Through attachment parenting we have provided a POSITIVE, well structured environment where both children and parents live in harmony. We don't have to get stressed out as parents screaming and yelling, or setting rigid guidelines because of the mutual respect we share for one another. This book is worth the reading. If not for anything simply "step outside" of our box here in North America and look at how other cultures raise their children...to most of them attachment parenting is a familiar concept.
Loved the book!.......2007-06-07
The Baby Bs of Attachment Parenting guided me when I needed reassurances and information about choices my husband and I already made. While this book explains the importance Baby Bs, such as breastfeeding, babywearing and co-sleeping (if you doubt its safety read this book), it also recognizes that not all Bs fit every family. You have to customize the advice to fit your family's needs. (There is actually a page with tips for AP friendly bottlefeeding.)
The Attachment Parenting Book also addresses discipline somewhat, which should NOT be mistaken as the let-your-child-have-everything approach. And the book warns against moms burning out, telling moms to take care of themselves, take breaks, involve the dads, etc.
This book is great to begin reading before the baby is born or when the baby is tiny, but can be enjoyed at any point up to and into toddlerhood, if you need guidance. I read this book when my child was one year old because I had co-sleeping concerns. This is the only Sears book I read, and now I wish I had read more! I love the Sears' values.
Attached and Loving It!.......2006-11-15
This book gave my husband and I the confidence to follow our hearts rather than the well-meaning albeit but misguided advice of friends and family. Prior to the birth of our son I whole heartedly agree with "crying it out" and other methods touted by baby trainers. However after his birth, we quickly realized that we could not use such heartless methods and began looking at attachment parenting. Dr. Sears encourages parents to trust their instincts which often have a biological basis. This book changed my perspective about babies and parenting. I am so glad that I read this book early on. If you are a new parent or parent-to-be I encourage to read this book and visit Dr. Sear's website (askdrsears.com).
Okay, but duplicate material from Sears' The Baby Book.......2006-11-10
A good concise book, but you can find most of the same material in the Attachment Parenting chapter in Sears' The Baby Book, a much more comprehensive book of the same price.
Book Description
It's the most urgent and highly publicized issue facing America's family: how to teach our children to protect themselves in any situation. Based on the author's successful education workshop, which has been in operation since 1969 and has educated more than 50,000 parents and children nationwide, The Safe Child Book gives parents effective and nonthreatening techniques for teaching children how to protect themselves without making them afraid. Written by one of the few nationally recognized authorities on the subject, The Safe Child Book provides a comprehensive educational program covering a wide range of topics that concern parents today, including sexual abuse, abduction, leaving children alone, surfing the Internet, school safety, and choosing a day-care center or baby-sitter.

Must Read for Parents.......2002-09-25
This is a great book to read. It is helpful to understand the problem that parents cause by sending conflicting signals to children. It also gives practical advice in how to teach your children to speak to stranges and others to avoid sexual abuse or abduction. It teaches you the ideas and concepts you need to better equip your children with the skills they need. Very helpful.
Great Book!.......2001-05-04

Practical methodology for educating your child.......1999-12-10
I came across this book a couple of years ago. It is an excellent resource for improving a child's awareness towards becoming independently secure as much as possible. As Dr. Kraizer notes in this book, the only person a child can rely on ALL the time is him- or herself. The very practical method prescribed by Dr. Kraizer helps a child become more aware of potential dangers without alarming them. I highly recommend this book for any parent or teacher.
Book Description
Discipline is not a four-letter word.
As a respected child psychologist and mom with more than 20 years' experience, Dr. Ruth Peters knows that kids can be manipulative--and she offers parents a positive, no-nonsense approach to bringing about family harmony.
Kids know exactly what to do when their parents relinquish authority--take advantage! Don't Be Afraid to Discipline focuses on several ineffective parenting styles that kids thrive on, such as the emotionally needy parents or the happiness-seeking parent. Dr. Peters also helps parents identify which tactics their children like to use best, whether it's provoking parental guilt or pitting Mom against Dad. Don't Be Afraid to Discipline helps parents avoid these common pitfalls by establishing clear, consistent, fair rules for both themselves and their kids. There are no surprises and no complaints, because the kids know exactly what will happen if they misbehave.
The book features behavior management charts tailored for elementary middle and high schoolers, information on attention deficit disorder, specific advice on the special disciplinary problems of single parents and stepfamilies, and a frank discussion about children who are seriously troubled. Don't Be Afraid to Discipline is a welcome approach to child misbehavior for weary parents in need of simple, direct answers.

This is absolutely the BEST discipline book ever.......2007-02-11
As the mother to four strong-willed kids ages 19 down to 5, and I have read many discipline books and tried various methods over the years. This one is the best, hands down. I have been using behavior charts based on Ruth Peters' book for a few years (of course, I don't use the charts with my 19yo, but I do with my others - ages 11, 8, and 5 right now). My children get compliments from even from complete strangers on how well-behaved and polite they are, and how nicely they get along with each other. Dr. Peters has another very good book written for parents of preschoolers called Never Too Early to Discipline. Also highly recommended. My house is calm and peaceful, my kids are happy. The wonderful thing is, this can be accomplished without yelling, nagging, threatening, or spanking! Read the book!
180 degree turnaround in 1 week!!.......2002-04-25
Got this for my 9 yr. old granddaughter. We were spending 4 hrs a nite on homework, her room was a disaster area and she was on a continuous restriction for her mouthing back and attitude. Knew something had to change. Wrote up the behavior plan based on this book; She actually liked the plan. Daily rewards and punishments, no more restrictions lasting days or a week, and privelege and money chips for good behavior, homework done in 1 1/2hrs and room straightened, dog fed, table set, coat hung up, etc every day. Amazingly within a few days, everything done as above! Her room is straightened with bed made and everything off floor in about 4 minutes(allowed 10 min). Homework always done without any hassle as soon as she comes in! Guess what she bought with her first savings? An ORGANIZER! Cannot praise this book enough! If you follow her steps and stick to the program yourself, you too can have amazing changes in your child. Her parents and I were so pleased and amazed with the change. I just wish I had had this book when my daughter was little. Would have made life so much easier! Every month or so, we reevaluate her program and make small changes on problem areas and that's about all the extra time needed. On the weekends, instead of homework, she straightens her closet or drawers or bookshelves. I showed her teacher the behavior plan and this book and she made copies of it for herself and other mothers when they are having problems. It will save your sanity and family and give house control back to you!
The manual you said you never got when you became a parent........1999-02-02
This book is absolutely readable! You learn real-life approaches to dealing with your kids! This is not a book of psycho-babble.
Dr. Peters is wonderful. She saved my family and my sanity........1998-11-03
My husband and I have been married for five years. He has 3 children from his first marriage and his ex-wife is the classic "emotionally needy parent" plus she is having problems with alcohol abuse. When we had visitations with the kids we would have an adjustment period of 2 or 3 days. After that their behavior would usually mellow out and the rest of the stay was okay. Recently DCFS stepped in and ruled that the children were no longer safe in her care and turned them over to my husband and I. The children are 14, 12, and 9, plus they have a 3 year old half sister that was given into our custody. Our house has been a combination zoo and war zone since they arrived. My husband and I were at the end of our ropes when I found this book. She has been the answer to my prayers.
THIS BOOK CHANGED OUR LIVES! A must-read for all parents.......1998-10-15
I am the mother of a nine year old boy and a six year old girl that were beginning to take control of the house. I tried everything, but nothing stuck. Don't Be Afraid to Discipline really works! It is easy to implement and can be tailored to any family's special needs. Friends and teachers have been so impressed by the change in my children that they have all requested the title of the book. All that have begun the program are ecstatic! Privilege chips seem to be the key with my kids. They are even doing extra chores in order to earn extra chips. My son recently turned in 20 chips for a new computer game. He was proud of his accomplishment. So was I. Life in my household is calm now. The house is neater, the kids are happier, the parents are happier. We have more time to enjoy each other because the daily expectations/chores are taken care of without a fuss. My kids are self-sufficient in many respects. God bless Dr. Peters. Her program has been the answer to my prayers.
Book Description
Many parents wonder, "Is my child normal?" They may be concerned about their child's behaviors, attitudes, feelings, or general development. They may worry if their child doesn't seem to be fitting in socially, isn't happy, isn't getting along with others, or seems overly anxious, fearful, sad or angry. This book gives parents the advice, reassurance, and practical knowledge they need to help their child and themselves. Drawing on their years as counselors and teachers, the authors consider what's "normal" and what might not be "normal." They cover common childhood problems and suggest remedies for parents to try at home. After describing difficulties that might be more rare and serious, they explain the world of mental health professionals, then offer ideas for getting oneself and one's child ready to take advantage of professional help. The message throughout is clear: What's best is when our children are neither normal or abnormal, but simply able to live well.

A MUST HAVE.......2003-02-20
I was given this book as a gift and it certainly has been one! I have not found another herbal book that measures up to this one. Aviva's simple and beautiful explainations, instructions, and information are so welcome and refreshing.
If you're looking for a herbal/wholistic health book for your family THIS is the one you want.
Very informative.......2002-12-31
This book has lots of great usefull information that crossreferences beautifully. I highly reccomend it to anyone with small children or a spouse that just acts like one. This definitive guide illustrates many helpful applications for all times in a child's life, as well as pregnancy, post partum and beyond. You NEED this book.
This book is absolutely priceless........2002-05-20
You will find more information packed in here than you would in five traditional childcare books. Aviva fills the pages with not only commonsense but easy-to-read-and-understand remedies for a wide array of childhood illnesses and complaints. She also includes a lot of information for expecting moms that are healthy, effective words of wisdom. If you are familiar with using herbals and a hands-on approach to illness, then this book is a refreshing compilation of information that will result in you nodding your head in agreement. It is also wonderful to have all the different illnesses and remedies in one place. No more searching for that stray note or book with one quick blurb about a possible remedy for this or that. If, on the other hand, you are not familiar with using anything but a regular doctor or over-the-counter medicine for every illness, this book will be comforting for you as well. It is not an anti-doctor approach at all; in fact there are certain areas in which Aviva mentions that using a doctor is necessary. However, she also includes things that the parent can do to accompany the doctor's techniques. Everything in this entire book is very empowering to parents and women who are expecting. Often, the first thing we are told to turn to is an over-the-counter med or a quick trip to the doctor's office, and we are left feeling helpless to comfort our children. Aviva stresses how important and powerful the mere touch of a parent is in the healing of a child, and she supports the idea that there is emotional healing to be done as well as physical healing for any illness. The herb list is extensive and there are many easy-to-follow directions for tonics, teas, washes and other healing ideas that can be made at home, even by a sleep-deprived parent. The remedies do not involve a lot of searching for hard-to-find ingredients or supplies. Each remedy is simple and starts with a non-invasive approach. I recommend this book for any expecting couple, new or experienced parent. You will find yourself turning to it again and again .

A good primier for basic child-rearing!.......1998-05-15
As a school psychologist I am often asked which books are good in regards to behavioral concerns. I find the Little People book has some good basic techniques to teach and does it in a easy to read manner. I am always sorry that it is not easier to locate in the local bookstore because I want to buy it for friends.
Exellent resource, concise, easy reading, pullout section.......1996-12-03
The book focuses on common child-rearing behavioral problems and the easy solutions to fix them. It emphasizes catching the children in acts of good behavior instead of punishing them for bad behavior. I used the ideas put forth in the text with my own children and was delighted at how well the results showed. Anyone who is ready to pull their hair out with a specific behavioral problem concerning a child, should read this book. Not only does it offer solutions of how to turn behavior around, but it also has pullout sections for your particular concern that can be put in a convenient location. You will quickly find how to apply these methods in a broader sense to many aspects of child-rearing and socially accepted behavior. Written in small, easy to digest chapters and the author backs up his methods with proven results from his work in a behavior clinic for children

Better than Dr. Spock's!.......2002-01-21
All four of my kids were patients of Dr. Schiller and I couldn't have asked for a better pediatrician. This book was my "bible." My kids liked him so much that he finally had to tell them (at 18!) they had to go to another doctor...they were too old for a pediatrician!
This book is a must for parents...it really is a common sense approach to caring for young children.
A Mother's Must Read.......2000-03-21
I relied on this book while raising my eight children. I am saddened that it is not available for me to buy for my children to use while raising their children!
A prescription for peace of mind........1999-08-31
Doctor Shiller's common sense advice kept me calm through many bouts of illness with my three children. Now I'm buying it for them to use as they raise our grandchildren.
Clear, concise, sound advice to have healthy children.......1998-11-17
Working in medicine does not always prepare you to be a parent. Dr. Shiller's on target "tincture of time" remedies allows the child's immune system to kick in developing antibodies for optimal health. I highly recommend this and look forward to giving it for my grandchildren! Let me know when it is reprinted!
