5 out of 5 stars Upbeat and To the Point.......2007-03-09

This book about publishing children's stories is very comprehensive, up
beat, concisoe, and offers the reader a good grasp of the publishing industry. Recommend it to all who want to learn about the publishing industry. Great Read!!

4 out of 5 stars Business of Writing for Children.......2007-01-04

Easy read. Good, quick information. A little lacking on specifics, but a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Goes to the point.......2006-11-27

I like to read "How to" books that are concise and go to the point without making me waste time reading unnecessary fringe. Mr. Shepard, I love this book full of tips. I recently wrote a short story for children in Spanish. Now I notice my many "errors" that I plan to correct. :O) As English is my second language, the chapter on rhythm and beats is a bit difficult for me to absorb. But I will. And will use Shepard's ideas for my writing. Somebody else can do the translation if it goes to English. Thanks Mr. Shepard!

5 out of 5 stars A Must For The Kid Writer's Bookshelf.......2006-11-17

Packed with practical tips, this concise guide - covering everything from query to contract and beyond - belongs in every children's author's library. A handy reference for beginners and pros alike.

5 out of 5 stars No Waste of Time.......2006-03-07

I have recently read several books on this subject, and this one has been the most helpful and enjoyable thus far. It follows a logical, sequential order. *The Business of Writing for Children* answered every question I have posed and a few I hadn't yet formulated. It is concise and so left Mr. Shepard time for an occassional show of his sense of humor; without compromising more of mine than I would have liked to allow. Sense of humor or time, you wonder. The answer is both.

Busy parents of toddlers to teens will get a lot out of Nancy Samalin's Loving Without Spoiling. The book offers 100 mini how-to chapters on a vast array of parenting issues, such as stopping whining, streamlining morning routines, encouraging honesty, and making an uninterrupted phone call. The information is not in-depth and is occasionally culled from other parenting tomes, but the book is an easy read and an excellent jumping-off point for parents looking for new solutions to any number of age-old problems.

Samalin has been leading parenting workshops for the past 25 years. Many examples and much of the good advice presented in the book are drawn from the experience of the parents in these classes, as well as from her own family. Samalin recognizes the intense love that leads parents to make their children happy at the risk of encouraging self-centered, spoiled, even bratty behavior. Loving Without Spoiling focuses on helping parents to exercise their authority and raise well-behaved children without being too strict or squashing a child's spirit. Samalin's frequent advice is for parents to let children take responsibility for themselves, particularly in managing their relationships with siblings and friends, as well as in hot-button arenas like eating and doing homework. Samalin advocates letting children make their own food choices, do their own homework, and learn from experience. She doesn't counsel parents to let children be in charge, but rather reminds us that making mistakes is a necessary part of learning and that fostering learning is a tremendous part of a parent's job. --Jennifer Lindsay

Book Description

One of the nation's most influential parenting authorities shares her winning tips for raising great kids

"Takes parents well beyond discipline and provides lasting lessons in raising caring, confident kids." --Ann Pleshette Murphy, parenting correspondent for "ABC News" and "Mother Know-How" columnist for Family Circle

Raising well-behaved, considerate children requires balancing discipline with love and humor. Nancy Samalin, internationally known parent educator and author of the bestselling Loving Your Child Is Not Enough, provides immediate answers to child-rearing challenges and helps develop the confidence and skills needed to raise a new generation of well-adjusted adults. Covering the most common parental concerns, Loving Without Spoiling provides effective strategies for positive parenting.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Support and specifics.......2006-11-12

Sometimes I read parenting books for inspiration, other times for nitty-gritty advice. In a tone that's respectful of parents as well as children, Samalin delivers both. She is terrific at empathizing with a parent's perspective (she understands what it's like to be an overwhelmed parent), yet keeps the child's well-being in clear focus. I appreciate the specific, solution-oriented advice (for setting limits while remaining supportive of your child, for example), as well as the pat on the back from this friendly, often humorous author. As usual, Samalin contributes to the fun of becoming a well educated parent.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A RELIEF!.......2006-11-04

Finally, a book I can actually use everyday! So many parenting books are great "in theory" but never work in practice. Nancy Samalin's book, Loving without Spoiling, saves my family from upset on a daily basis. I read parts of it over and over again, and it never fails to amaze me. I especially follow the "pick your battles" advice--this is so effective. Her simple suggestions to change the way you phrase requests are incredibly effective!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what the title says...and it works!.......2003-11-17

I read this book a few months ago and immediately took it to heart. It absolutely changed the way I think about discipline. The most interesting thing is that recently, I picked it up to browse through again, and was amazed at all the thoughts from the book that I have adopted as my own. So many tips I've used...so many anecdotes I've repeated to friends...so much GOOD STUFF that I've internalized since I read it the first time.

My husband read the book, too. He has for the past 4 years been a believer in the style of discipline promoted by John Rosemond: very authoritarian and a strict disciplinarian of the old school, "just like your grandmother." This style has become very popular lately, as American children seem to be more insolent, violent and disrespectful than ever before. A reversion to that old-time discipline seems, at first blush, to be the answer.

Although we certainly want our children to be well-behaved and respectful, we also want them to be happy and well-adjusted, not sneaky and defiant. After reading Samalin's thoughtful book, my husband and I have decided that we agree with Rosemond's goals, but not his methods. Samalin will give you options, and ways to be an authoritative parent, instead of an authoritarian one. THAT INSIGHT ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK, and there are many more.

I've never found one parenting book that has all the answers. In fact, the longer I'm a parent, the more convinced I am that there are no clear-cut instructions on discipline that are right for every child. But this book -- with its wonderful anecdotes, sample dialogues and calm, pragmatic suggestions -- is the one book I recommend above all others. I certainly wish my parents had read it.

5 out of 5 stars The best quick reference book on parenting.......2003-08-18

This book has become my most often referenced parenting book. Its format is ideal for 3-minute refresher courses on strategies. Today, I just re-read "End Morning Madness" and "Jump-Start the Dawdler" to help get ready for the first week of school. When you feel like there must be a better way to deal with a situation, but you are too stressed, distracted, or busy to calmly think it through, give yourself a time-out and run for this book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for parents.......2003-08-05

This is the book I would like to hand every new parent as they begin their journey. Nancy Samalin has provided a map for parents to help them navigate the bumps and blind curves on the road to raising happy, responsible children. Experienced parents will recognize and appreciate the jewels of wisdom in this practical and wise guide to parenting.

Stressing safety first, Anderson introduces kids to the rotary cutter, iron, and sewing machine, as well as the other essentials. She covers all the basics of quilt anatomy, explaining how to square up, cut, pin, stitch, and press the pieces, plus how to handle settings, borders, backing, batting, basting, binding, tying, and hand quilting. The seven nicely designed step-by-step quilt projects include log cabin, four-patch, saw tooth star, and sampler designs. A kids' quilt gallery features works by the six young quilters--both girls and boys--who collaborated on the book with Anderson, and quotes from the kids and photos of them at work on their quilts provide even more encouragement to other young quilters. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Purchase.......2007-01-10

I purchased this book for my 13yo niece; it was the best buy ever. It is easy to read & the projects are very easy to understand & complete.

4 out of 5 stars Skimpy.......2004-09-08

I love Alex but the book is a little too skimpy with only five blocks to choose from.

I am also surprised at the lack of photos on hand quilting. Hand quilting really needs way more illustrations and not just on burying the knot! Even the section on hand tying lacks illustrations!! If you put it in the book, you should show us how it is done so we can see it. A book on the basics should include the basics!

It is still a good book, but after having both books by Barbara Eikmeier I can say it isn't the best book I have seen on the subject. A nice addition after you have the others.

5 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool.......2002-04-22

Alex Anderson is among the best in teaching quilting methods. This book is a great teaching tool for children of all ages. Alex really explains each step in detail and I learned some new tricks myself. She stresses safety while working with children as well as self-expression through fabric choices. A great addition to any sewing library!

Book Description

Parenting Gifted Kids: Tips for Raising Happy and Successful Children provides a humorous, engaging, and encouraging look at raising gifted children today. Jim Delisle, Ph.D., offers practical, down-to-earth advice that will cause parents to reexamine the ways they perceive and relate to their children.

Delisle puts forth 10 "tips" to parents of gifted children—ideas that reflect attitude and approach and allow for introspection and change, rather than quick, do-it-tonight solutions. Some topics of interest include understanding a child's giftedness, working with the school system, dealing with perfectionism in gifted kids, and being adult role models for children. Along the way, stories from gifted children and their parents provide insight into the lives of these individuals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for parents of gifted (and very bright) kids.......2007-04-24

Not really the book that I have expected, but it ended up being better than I expected.
The author analyzes different types of giftedness, gives many real life examples and quotes, talks about gifted adults - something that I haven't encountered yet in this type of literature - and in general helps to change your general attitude towards giftedness. For me, the attitude change (not "ten tips..."!) is the factor that makes easier to deal with many related to giftedness issues (academic, social, emotional). Just two examples of what turned out to be really helpful for me:
- list of phrases that most of us use all the time with gifted kids, but that should be avoided ("You are so smart, I expected better from you" - this is my favourite - unfortunately!)
- reference to couple of books "Philosophy for kids" and advice how to deal with questions of this type (again, how do YOU answer the question "Why does God allow murder?" from 6-years old?)
Highly recommended for all parents of gifted kids - and even more, for parents who are not sure whether their kids are gifted.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading, especially to all new parents of a gifted child.......2006-05-04

Parenting Gifted Kids: Tips For Raising Happy And Successful Children by James R. Delisle (Professor of Gifted Education at Kent State University) is an informative and "parent friendly" reference for enabling a truly gifted child to expressively and productively achieve their life goals, develop sound character, and general enjoy their life. Examining overly excitable children, the type of gift granted to each child, working with the school system, dealing with perfectionist children, being a positive role model, building a child's character, and helping kids achieve their set goals and dreams, Parenting Gifted Kids is very highly recommended reading, especially to all new parents of a gifted child.

    Book Description

This guide to proper behavior at the dinner table provides an introduction to etiquette for kids and a refresher in manners for adults. Offering three tips for each letter of the alphabet, kids are asked to examine the factors that contribute to proper form. Guides Polly Politely and Milton Manners introduce kids to the correct way of handling situations such as choosing utensils at the table, passing the salt and pepper, chewing ice, and disposing of olive pits. In addition to situation-specific guidance (“Finger foods, like an airplane, need to land somewhere first. . . . No direct flights from the serving dish into the mouth”), this book provides the means for determining appropriate behavior in any situation by asking children to consider those around them.

4 out of 5 stars great book; some concerns.......2005-04-05

I ordered this book for my young granddaughter who, at nearly 3 years of age, is ready to consider simple discussion of table manners. I am generally delighted with the book and believe it is one that can grow with a child, having applications even into adulthood.

I was startled, however, to find lie-lay errors on pp. 7 and 55. I also note numerous other small changes that would greatly improve a future edition. For example, some pages are written in the imperative, some are written in the declarative....some are in the third person, some are in the second person, and at least one (p. 44) slips into the first person plural. In addition, frequent use of unnecessary quotation marks is distracting.

The book fills an important niche in a child's library, but it is limited by the above weaknesses. I do not mean to be critical....I have corrected pp. 7 and 55 in my edition and will enjoy this charmingly illustrated book with my granddaughter. You could do the same.

5 out of 5 stars Manners Made Fun!.......2003-10-28

You've Got Manners is a delightful, creative book which makes learning manners a fun and interesting "game" for children of all ages. It can be used as a learning tool whether at the dinner table, eating out or traveling, and all family members can participate. I love the author's use of illustrations and vivid primary colors which are instrumental in keeping a child's attention. The author also cleverly incorporated another learning tool, the alphabet. I can unequivocally recommend You've Got Manners for every family's library.

1 out of 5 stars 401 Old ways to bore your kids........2006-03-22

This book is way too outdated for our hectic, electronic, urban life. I don't recommend it, it doesn't take into consideration that we don't live in a farm and that our kids watch television and surf the web too. I have to say that I only read it briefly and decided it didn't apply to me.

5 out of 5 stars Good Ideas for a house full of kids!.......2006-03-03

This book had lots of great information about the things we NEED to teach our kids before they venture out into the unknown. With 5 kids ranging in age from 18 years to 10 months, everyone is in a different place and it has been fun to watch the younger kids learn from the older kids. We have some goals in place for each kid and they are eager to start learning lots of "grown up" things!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2000-01-02

I borrowed this book from the library and felt lost when I had to give it back. So I want to get one for myself to keep and use whenever I need to reference back to it. Great ideas that we will definitely be using around here.

5 out of 5 stars Good practical advise for teaching life skills to kids.......1998-10-03

I am already utilizing several ideas from this book and I haven't finished reading it yet! The concept of teaching practical life skills to one's children to develop their self-confidence as well as helpfulness is great. My children are responding very well to new habit formation. They are also looking forward to getting their own recipe book with foods they can make themselves without Mom hanging around.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth reading...and rereading periodically........1998-05-27

This is a great book. I've been hording my neighbor's dog-eared copy for a few years now. Every time I look at it, I find something other tool to try. I've finally decided that it is time to buy my own copy and let my neighbor lend hers to someone else who could use it.

4 out of 5 stars Full of Great Stuff.......2006-11-05

This book is jammed with great ideas for music classes or for any elementary school class where the teacher wants to inject a little fun. If you can get past the author's "controlling nature" -- she basically tries to tell you what clothes to wear and how to say "good morning, class" -- it will be well worth your while. I teach music in Los Angeles and use this book constantly.

      4 out of 5 stars A great resource.......2006-01-09

I agree with earlier reviewers, this book is a great resource for the music teacher but is not for you if you are looking for ready-made lesson plans. It's formatted in a very user friendly way and I especially love the warm-ups.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2004-10-11

This is a useful book for music educator who works with big classes. However if you are looking for ready-to-use lesson plans this book is not for you. The core idea is how to teach rather than what to teach. The author shares her ideas on classroom management, and presents various teaching strategies on how to introduce the material. I used some of the ideas from this book in the classroom. They worked like magic!
No one knew I was not the magician. Thank you, Ms. Lavender.

4 out of 5 stars Sensible Resource for Elementary School Teachers.......2004-08-21

I'm an elementary school music teacher for an Asian country, and I must say that this book has been a very useful resource and I do not regret buying it.

The cons of this book is that stuff like classroom management techniques are highly cultural sensitive - so it is definitely more suitable for the context of American classrooms.

However, many of the teaching techniques mentioned will definitely inspire you to make your lessons more interesting for children. They also seem to correspond quite closely with the 'learning through doing' techniques for teaching music to children that I was highly ingrained with during my pre-service training.

In short, this book is a sensible read and resource for elementary school music teachers who wish to inject a more creative approach towards teaching in their classrooms. It far beats some of those books which boast of a 101 music games etc etc which leave you with a feeling that you are running a circus rather than a music class.

I tried to order this book on three different occasions and each time they said it would be delayed and I could cancel or wait for it. First two times I cancelled as I needed it for a gift and it wouldn't be available on time. The last time I chose to wait and wait, and wait I did....for a number of months and finally they emailed back and said :

A good overview of the basics of golf, with age appropriate pictures, narrative, etc. I must admit, however, that the title is a little deceiving - the book has nothing to do with Tiger Woods!
