Product Description
Book Description The Great Bust Ahead is a concise, straight to the point book laying out in stark terms the case for a coming depression of historically unprecedented magnitude. It will be worse than the 1930s, beginning perhaps as early as 2009-2010, and last up to thirteen years. Centered on hard fact demographics, the book boldly claims that the data presented are so irrefutable, that the outcome predicted by the book is equally as irrefutable. The compelling proof presented accurately accounts for the detailed trend of the economy from 1920 to today (something never before accomplished), and projects out to 2030 in detail. The book is very easy to read and understand, and requires no prior knowledge of economics. Down to earth things the average person can do to prepare for what is coming are covered. A summary of the catastrophic domestic social and international consequences is offered.
October 2007 Update: In 2002 when this book was published, in addition to the massive depression beginning around the end of the decade, it forecast:
1. The economy, as reflected by the DJIA, would resume its upwards march in late 2002 or 2003.
This is exactly what happened.
2. The DJIA would have a snap-back to 13,000 to 14,000 and the FTSE to 6,000 to 7,000 by 2004, but delayed possibly by wars/politics/terrorism/scandals.
This is exactly what has happened. Although the full snap-back has been delayed for the reasons described, the DJIA has now closed over 14,100 and the FTSE over 6,700.
3. The DJIA returns from 2003 to 2012 would average a historically long-term normal of 7% to 8%. So far, with the delayed full snap-back, DJIA actual returns have averaged a more modest 5.8%, as would be expected.
4. Interest rates would increase from 2003 onwards.
This is exactly what has happened.
Customer Reviews:
It is just an indicator!.......2007-09-12
Everyone is forgetting that the book is talking about a correlated indicator for the DJIA. There are many things that drive an economy and make things happen like the weakening dollar, monstrous deficits, the Federal Reserve, cheap credit and the housing market bubble, peak oil, etc. These are some of the things that move the DJIA, NOT just demographics. The fact that the 45-54 age group correlates to the DJIA is very interesting and CAN be used to predict what MAY happen to the DJIA in the long term. Demographics of the 45-54 age groups are a strong force pushing the markets, but not the only thing. Even the author says that some things like "the New Deal, the pill and the NASDAQ" affect the correlation with this indicator. The politicians and Wall Street are not going to lie down and let this monstrous depression happen without a fight. They my not win the War, but where the DJIA goes in the future has not been case in stone. The future highs and lows of the DJIA are still unpredictable.
The book is a high school treatise on this relationship and to the economically ignorant is a real eye opener. Most economists know about this force, but the key is what to do about it and when. The author's advice to get out of the markets by 2010 is silly at best. We are now in September of 2007 and the housing market bubble burst is probably the beginning of the down turn of the markets. Wait until 2010 to protect your assets and you will far less assets to protect. The author's advice to sell your home and rent and plow your money into bonds is simplistic at best. Investing in gold, foreign currencies, TIPS etc. to protect your assets are other stratigies that are not addressed. We are all speeding towards this economic depression, but the answers to when it will happen and what to do about protecting your assets is NOT even close to being addressed by this book. The book is $8.95 and you get what you pay for, "a wakeup call for the economically ignorant". Read the book and move onto a more advanced book for a better in depth discussion on economics and your money like "The Second Great Depression (Paperback) by Warren Brussee (Author)". I do agree that a lot of pain is ahead for the world.
Not Bad But Too Short and Too Extreme.......2007-08-22
Let me start by saying that this is a pretty good book for the price and if you don't know what is going on in the economy. The problem is that the book has very limited data to back up the predictions. If you are going to make huge predictions you had better justify it with a lot of credible data that has been referenced. As well, some of the predictions are just too extreme. However, all of these shortcomings aside, the author provides a nice short treatment on what will most likely occur; just not to the extent he has presented in my opinion. Of course, opinions are like debt in America - everyone has their own!
A much more useful book in my opinion is "Cashing in on the Real Estate Bubble." It not only shows you many different ways to profit from the current bubble collapse, but it also shows a lot of detail about the economy and how to profit from America's overall credit bubble. Cashing in on the Real Estate Bubble
Interesting theory but..........2007-07-09
This book is short and easy to read. The author has an interesting concept that the stock market follows the number of Americans at their peak buying age. His graphs and explanations on modifying factors make everything fit. I agree that some correction of our economy (inflation, recession, or worse) is likely in the future, but I feel other factors (energy issues, our national debt, terrorism, etc.) will come into play that he has not taken into account. I also don't agree with his investment suggestions and feel they may be reckless.
If you're concerned about possible bad times ahead, this is one book that may helpful, but I better liked the reasoning and proposals on what to do in Stephen Leeb's book The Coming Economic Collapse: How You Can Thrive When Oil Costs 200 Dollars a Barrel.
Excellent Read.......2007-05-14
Pros:
1. Brief: to the point, no fluff book(let)
2. Logical: Numbers support theory all along
3. Simple: Easy to understand
4. Value: Could save your shirt
Cons:
1. May sound too negative
2. May not consider all factors into forecasting
Pretty interesting read.......2007-05-12
This book and the argument that it lays out is pretty eye-opening. It shows you, through logical argument, how the demographics of our country will impact our coming future economic health. With these baby-boomers greying and falling from their peak spending years, our country will experience a downshift that will really challenge our concept of prosperity... A must read!

Customer Reviews:
Victory over strongholds and strongmen!.......2007-06-10
This is an intensely practical, very valuable guide to spiritual warfare. The Lord Jesus Christ has given us the power to overcome all the attacks of the enemy! Demolishing strongholds means you have to repent of your sins (or overcome the curse against you) which allowed access to your life and then go after the strongman. But many make the mistake of not recognizing that there are other spirits of bondage connected with the strongman which make him even stronger. (This book gives detailed lists of these associated with common strongmen.) The author directs the reader to bind the strongman, cast out the other spirts, THEN cast out the strongman. She includes prayers to use, stories of victorious battles, and her own personal experience. Even if you don't believe in demon deliverance, think of this book as a way of using truth encounters to confront strongholds and what kinds of strongholds tend to happen together.
great.......2007-02-07
The book came very quickly and was in excellent condition. And to top it off the book was great.
The Keys to Freedom.......2006-12-06
The book is the ultimate handbook for deliverance ministry. The keys to identifying and breaking off demonic strongholds are identified clearly. As this life is a battlefield, then this book is a war room strategy guide. This book brought me immense help in identifying how demons work to intimidate and harass people, and how to fight on their behalf. As usual, this author has taken a complex subject and put it into simple, concrete terms. Indispensible reference book for anyone serious about setting others free.
A practical guide your library needs.......2006-12-05
If you are like most Christians, you have times when you may feel "hemmed in" by something that isn't readily explainable.Other times you may lack the freedom in Christ that you have had in times past. Delivering the Captives is a well written practical guide to deal with issues before they get a foothold in your life. This is a book every library needs to have, and hopefully the reader will review from time to time. It is a very compatible book with the author's Beyond the Lie. Though the specific issues may be differerent, both of these books deal with life isssues that affect our functioning ability. Make no mistake about it, the strongman will do his best to defeat you quickly or with a slow burn. With God's help we can be victorious.
Freedom.......2006-11-08
This is a great "how to" book with amazing stories about everyday people who experience relief and freedom from fears, tormenting thoughts, addictions and overpowering sinful habits by resisting sin and evil through drawing near to God. Salvation, personal freedom and deliverance from demonic spirits, is the work of Jesus in and through our lives.
Alice Smith in "Delivering The Captives" shares how we can obtain personal freedom and effectively help others with their greatest struggles and pain. "Delivering The Captives" renews our faith that the love and power of God is more than enough to live changed lives and experience God's peace.

Sufferer of postpartum Anxiety.......2007-04-03
I can honestly say that I have purchased about 15-20 books regarding PPD in the last year and this book has been the most informative, encouraging and beneficial to me, along with being easy to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from PPD, or a spouse/friend of someone suffering from this. When you are a sufferer, you find yourself agonizing over why you are feeling the way you do. Finally, someone has written a book that answers all the questions you are asking. This book will help you get through your day, this book will help you realize that this dark cloud will not stay forever, this book will help you get better.
Very practical to the point information that doesn't create anxiety.......2007-01-16
Being a PPD survivor, I feel that out of all the books I read, this one was the best. It provided stories I could relate to, factual information about postpartum mood disorders, questions about medication and separate sections for family and healthcare providers.
It is presented in such a way, so that if one is feeling vulnerable it won't create added anxiety.
I still reference this book for education purposes.

very helpful and easy read.......2006-07-16
so many folks fall into depression during or shortly following pregnancy. changes in the body, hormone levels, neurotransmitters, SLEEP DEPRIVATION, changes in perceptions of who we are, what is expected of us, finances, support from family and friends, our bodily image, realization of the seriousness of the new responsibility ... it's natural to feel this depression, for many folks, for the first time in their lives. this book takes folks for where they're at, provides numerous treatments / techniques / exercises that many people have found helpful in pulling themselves out from post-partum depression. this was a fairly light read, welcomed, and motivating! good to very good content. many people have reported to me that this book has been helpful to them. i think that it is a very good book and is worth the price. some folks, especially those who've had episodes of depression or family histories of perinatal depression might consider reading the book as a way of reducing the likelihood of onset. it offers some helpful information for family and friends.
A good start.......2006-07-12
A great unbiased view of prenatal and postpartum depression. Well written as a good start for anyone looking for information on this subject.

Customer Reviews:
This describes my husband 100%.......2007-10-07
This is one of the few books of this nature where I have read every single page. It describes my husband to a T-for-testoterone. While my husband insists that there is nothing wrong with him, and the rest of the world is against him, I have been able to encourage some of the diet changes: a multi-vitamin (for zinc and B-vitamins), and cutting back on artificial sweetener.
When I sent an e-mail to the author, I did get back a thoughtful referral, although the referrals are to expensive places that are out of state. But it's helpful to have this book, because I can cite it to health and mental health care professionals, "see, what he does is on page 42, and 43, and 44 ..."
I agree that it does go on and on before getting to the helpful information in the back third of the book. My guess is the publisher wanted to get it up to a certain page count. I get the picture with one or two examples, but I would rather have more information, than less information. So this is not a major detraction, and the book was VERY helpful in articulating what I see to be true.
Now if I can only figure out how to get my husband to agree to get help. I am not ready to issue a divorce ultimatum, but if the angry blowups continue, what else can I do? At least I'll have some informed suggestions to make when the time comes.
An Absolute Eye-Opener!!!!!!.......2006-11-01
This book has effected the way I think about men, women, relationships, myself, and the people close to me. Jed Diamond has incorportated medical and psychological research, the experiences of his patients (male and female), and his own experiences as therapist and husband into an insightful book that is not only informative, but hopeful and humorous at times.
This book is written directly for men, but continually allows for the reader as a woman who is involved with a man that may be suffering from Irritable Male Syndrome. Several questionnaires included in the book are helpful with identification of Irritable Male Syndrome and depression, and the author covers physical, psychological, and societal causes. I particularly liked his take on changing gender roles and masculine identity.
I was a little disappointed in the organization of the book in that all of the information about what to do to help yourself (if you're a man) or help your partner (if you're a woman) is in the third and last section of the book. I would have preferred helpful information along the way according to the cases and ideas he presents. All in all, a great find!
Give me some real information.......2006-10-30
I decided not to buy this book, the single male reviewer called himself MY PEN IS HUGE and suggested the material was too lengthy and involved. What did he learn? Does someone with such a moniker want to learn anything? The other two reviews were from women, one a librarian who has some insight, but the other is a housewife who drives home a whining litany of tears and letters to her husband through this book. What did she learn? She gives no clue. I would love to just browse through books that can give me some insight into men's behavior and physiology with some male reviews, so I know I'm getting the goods. What I find is over fifty pages of books mislisted under male interests that include hundreds of books on female infertility and eating disorders. Can it be that a male interested in those subjects cannot find those topics under their proper divisional list? Perhaps that is understood here as a male characteristic of not being able to find his way and hating to ask directions. I hate wading through so many titles that are unnecessary to my search. I am a sixty year old female RN doing research.
Why Men Become Curmudgeons.......2006-07-24
AARP Bulletin tipped me off to this book. What an eye-opener! The author, a psychotherapist, observed that 80% of his patients in the 40 to 55 year range suffered from this irritability. He attributes it mostly to hormone changes, but also to their stage in life/career/etc.
He recommends that both partners learn to focus on the other's needs rather than on who's right and who's wrong.
35 Year Old Male Reads Book - Admits Issues .......2006-05-08
This is informative, full of facts and examples, but tends to run in circles and is too lengthy. Finishing the book helped me understand my emotions like the South Beach Diet helped me understand my appetite.

As someone newly trying to grapple with the complicated topic of adolescent depression, from understanding what it is, to thinking about how to cope with it, this book is tops. It is easily readable and yet thorough in discussing every aspect of adolescent depression. Thank you to the authors for publishing this important work.
A Teenager with Depression.......2003-10-18
As a teen with depression I read a lot of book on the topic. THIS IS THE BEST ONE! I was diagnosed with a certin depression, that is hard to find information on -double depression. This book explains all about the differnt kinds of depression, also differtent methods to help feel better. I liked and related so much I would leave the book out with a note teeling my parents or friends to read parts. This book explains all parts if depression, and makes it a good read for a teenager that is depressed, or for some one that knows a teen.
As a Teenager with Depression.......2003-10-18
I dignosed with Depression in my teens and I have read many book out there over the years. THIS IS THE BEST ONE! I realted to it so much and I was able to show other people pages and sections that I tought would help them, help me. This book explains about differnt kinds of depression, and one of them is what I was diagnosed with. This is the only book that I have found that has a whole section of it. I love this book and if you are a teenager, or know a teenager with depression I would recomend this book.
Well-organized, eye-opening, and informative!.......2001-11-29
When you think about someone being diagnosed with depression, teenagers might not come first to mind. But teenagers are not exempt from things that can make adults experience an extreme feeling of being overwhelmed and saddened. They are just as vulnerable as adults when it comes to having fights and disagreements with friends or family, and problems at school could intensify their negative emotions. With all the problems teenagers encounter these days, how can you determine whether a teenager's depression is serious enough to warrant treatment?
The book "Understanding Teenage Depression: A Guide to Diagnosis, Treatment, and Management," addresses this information. Readers will become more familiar with depression -- how common it actually is; who is likely to be at risk; how to determine if a teenager is depressed; and what treatments are available. Other important information in the book discusses life events that could lead to teenage depression; various therapies; and other disorders that may afflict teenagers.
My ParenTime recommends the book, "Understanding Teenage Depression" by Maureen Empfield, M.D., and Nicholas Bakalar -- it is well-organized, eye-opening, and informs readers about a problem that is much more common today than parents realize.

• how to recognize and cope with the symptoms
• how to obtain an accurate diagnosis
• key risk factors and how to minimize them

Life-saving warning signs and advice.......2007-06-15
This book truly demystifies postpartum depression. The authors describe the warning signs and provide coping mechanisms to deal with PPD. Thanks to Joyce Venis, PPD is less of a stigma and is becoming more understood. A must read for pregnant women and for new mothers!
Not Only Women Experience The Effects Of PPD!!!.......2007-02-22
Men, this book is a must read for you as well. This will give you the insight to a better understanding of what it is that our "Moms" are going through. Moms aren't the only ones who suffer, we do to. Through Joyce's extremely hard work and personal experience, this book helps us better understand an illness, that many do not know exists. No one knows better than me the personal sacrifice, pain, tears and most of all, care that Joyce has dedicated to Moms out there through phone calls, support groups and her practice. It makes me VERY proud that she has finally put her knowledge/experience into words for everyone to read. She has spent a lifetime helping Moms everywhere and making this book happen. It's long over due. Like I said, no one knows better than me. Not only am I a PPD survivor, I am her son!!!!!
A must read for moms and family members affected by PPD.......2007-02-20
For more than 20 years, Joyce Venis has been known nationally for her work with families affected by postpartum depression. This book shares her vast knowledge and expertise with the world and is a must read for anyone who has been affected by PPD--moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, cousins, neighbors, health care providers etc. With a book that brings this common condition out of the shadows, it is hoped that unrecognized PPD will be a thing of the past and the horrific tragedies that have left us asking 'why?' will be no more.
Inspired.......2007-02-19
I haven't even read this book, yet I know it's going to be fantastic. As a first time mom who thought having PPD was the end of the world, Joyce showed me that isn't true. Now, I can say, I have PPD, PPD doesn't have me. She's always there when she's needed. She goes above and beyond for her patients. Not only is she an expert in her field, she's a good friend to alot of moms. Including this one. Emma and I love her.
Amazing Help for All Mothers.......2007-02-17
Joyce Venis is truly the authority on postpartum depression. From her clinical and personal experience, she has touched the lives of so many women and helped them through such a trying time in their lives. Through this book, she is able to spread her wisdom and strength to a much broader audience, hopefully helping all mothers out there to be the very best they can possibly be. As a PPD survivor myself, I truly know how helpful Joyce's advice and stories can be. Reading her book will make all sufering mothers feel more normal, know they are not alone, and help them begin on the path to healing. Well Done, Joyce!

Written expressly to be easily understood.......2002-04-11
Unveiling Depression In Women: A Practical Guide To Understanding And Overcoming Depression by licenced psychologists Catherine Hart Weber and Archibald Hart is a serious guide written expressly to be easily understood by the non-specialist general reader. This informative highly recommended work deals specifically with understanding the unfortunate phenomenon of depression as it specifically presents itself in women. Individual chapters address causes of depression, getting help, and strategies for improving one's life when suffering from depression or if a loved one suffers from depression. Unveiling Depression In Women is an ideal book for anyone who suffers from chronic or clinical depression, and those who love them.
A Good Practical Guide to Dealing With Depression.......2002-02-15
This volume is indeed a practical guide to understanding and dealing with depression, especially as it affects women. The place of Christian faith in the healing process is paramount in this book. Discussion of the topic is divided into four major sections: Understanding Depression in Women; Causes of Depression; Getting Help and Healing Depression; and Strategies for Overcoming Depression. In non technical terms the causes and affects of depression are discussed as well as possible methods of intervention. It is helpful to see that depression is a natural consequence of life experiences. When it absorbs a major part of one's life, depression has become a serious problem, but not a hopeless one. Beginning with prayer and fellowship with other Christians, the depressed woman can obtain the degree of help she needs if she follows the suggestions provided by the authors. Pastors, counselors, grandparents, and good friends will find this a ready resource.

Book Description
A first-of-its-kind exploration of black men and depression from an award-winning journalist
The first book to reveal the depths of black men’s buried mental and emotional pain, Standing in the Shadows weaves the author’s story of his twenty-five-year struggle with depression with a cultural analysis of how the illness is perceived in the black community—and why nobody wants to talk about it.In mainstream society depression and mental illness are still somewhat taboo subjects; in the black community they are topics that are almost completely shrouded in secrecy. As a result, millions of black men are suffering in silence or getting treatment only in the most extreme circumstances—in emergency rooms, homeless shelters, and prisons. The neglect of emotional disorders among men in the black community is nothing less than racial suicide. John Head’s explosive work, Standing in the Shadows, addresses what can be done to help those who need it most.In this groundbreaking book, veteran journalist and award-winning author John Head argues that the problem can be traced back to slavery, when it was believed that blacks were unable to feel inner pain because they had no psyche. This myth has damaged generations of African American men and their families and has created a society that blames black men for being violent and aggressive without considering that depression might be a root cause. The author also explores the roles of the black church, the black family, and the changing nature of black women in American culture as a way to understand how the black community may have unwittingly helped push the emotional disorders of African American men further underground. As daring and powerful as Nathan McCall’s Makes Me Wanna Holler, Standing in the Shadows challenges both the African American community and the psychiatric community to end the silent suffering of black men by taking responsibility for a problem that’s been ignored for far too long. Additionally, Standing in the Shadows gives women an understanding of depression that enables them to help black men mend their relationships, their families, and themselves.

u become aware of the great black syndrome..........2006-09-15
First you gotto get over the Black Power talk and the fact that all of the author's heroes are black. Then he tells you how white society was bad to him, but then the good part comes in. He introduces you to a world were irrational behaviour and poor social skills are to be blamed on mental health. How the racial stigma has contributed in the form of stress to have the black male become emotionally unstable. Wow. that's good. The reading was all worth it after the first two chapters.
The authors eloquence and style are impressive. This is no mediocre man writing on one more reason blacks haven't made it. He has some very powerful personal experinences and you will relate to him in many ways. I rated it a 3 but I DO INDEED RECOMMEND YOU READ IT. For those of yo interested in social issues, black empowerment issues, and mental health issues this book IS A MUST!
Private Battles.......2004-10-09
John Head lived the "American Dream": supportive wife, 2.5 children, fantastic job, great home, tennis buddies, family, friends... his list of blessings was long enough to make most envious; yet fulfillment and contentment were just beyond his grasp, sitting on the other side of depression.
He was trapped in the cell of depression, and no matter how hard his family and friends tried to break him free of his imprisonment, they failed. This was a battle John's loved ones could not fight for him. This was John's war; all others had to take a supporting role.
John Head's life is literally an open book in STANDING IN THE SHADOWS. In order to help African-American men-and those who love them-win the fight against depression, John Head reveals his revelations, struggles, failures, successes, and strategies for dealing with depression.
As I read STANDING IN THE SHADOWS, I could see how men suffering from depression could identify with John's struggles and hopefully seek help. As the wife of a diagnosed manic-depressive Black man, I could identify with the stories of John's family struggles. At times, Mr. Head became preachy on issues such as the role that racism plays in depression in African-American men and the stigma many Blacks have against admitting and treating mental illnesses, but otherwise this is an excellent book that is very informative and personable.

Book Description
The economy of any nation is an intricate web of relationships among the factors determining supply and demand--and everything that affects them, from inflation to taxes to the stock market. The study of business cycles attempts to explain why economies grow and contract, experiencing periods of prosperity and pain. Consistent with the popular conception of economics as the "dismal science," economists secretly long for recessions (periods of negative growth) and depressions (severe contractions), not because they enjoy their devastating impact on human welfare, but because these downturns serve as excellent laboratories for observing what happens when markets break down. Despite over two centuries of debate, no one has yet definitively unlocked the secrets of economic downturns and how they might be prevented. In Recessions and Depressions Todd Knoop traces the evolution of business cycle theory, from the "classical" model, which preceded the Great Depression, through the ground-breaking ideas of John Maynard Keynes, Milton Friedman, and their followers. He examines the strengths and limitations of each approach, in terms of explaining the impact of such factors as government policy, money supply, labor productivity, and wages. In the process, he presents an accessible introduction to what makes the economy tick, and offers new insights into understanding such historic events as the Great Depression, as well as more recent ones, such as the Asian meltdown in the 1990s, the financial crises in Latin America, and the U.S. recession of 2001, from which the United States is still recovering. Knoop reminds us that economists' track record in forecasting business cycles leaves much to be desired, and the quest to fully understand what causes economic downturns--and their effects on individuals and families--continues.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent .......2007-09-14
This is by far the best book I have seen on business cycles. Other books are either too handwavy or too abstract and dry. This book is very precise and comprehensive and at the same time very readable and accessible. It is an excellent blend of theory and real world.
The book explains many theories of business cycles. Some of these theories are widely known, while some I have not seen else where. But all are explained very well.
The book also shows how these theories apply to real world events like the Great Depression, the East Asian crisis, the Argentina crisis, and the Japanese depression. All are excellent case studies.
good overview.......2005-01-11
does a good job of explaining in simple terms the effects different financial and economic organizations and markets have on one another. if you've ever been laid off or lost money in the stock market (as i have), this book can help you place your personal loss in the broader context and perhaps anticipate things so that you're better prepared in the future.

GREAT SELF-HELP BOOK FOR UNDERSTANDING MOOD SWINGS.......2006-10-30
I recommend this book to all of my clients that have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. They all come back raving about the book--and in turn recommend it to their family and friends. This book is easy to read and understand. This book provides a thorough understanding of the issue as well as some very practical ways to manage the mood swings.

The paradox of bipolar disorder baffles its victims with its manic highs and depressive lows, plaguing as many as two million Americans. Since bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) has often been misdiagnosed as depression, many patients have had a difficult if not impossible task of understanding and managing this condition. WHY AM I UP, WHY AM I DOWN explores the nature of this illness, including who is at risk and where to get help. In simple terms, this often complex and devastating condition becomes comprehensible and hopefully manageable.
For readers looking for basic information regarding the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder, WHY AM I UP, WHY AM I DOWN is a useful resource. All the practical information one needs to begin education oneself is concisely presented in a question/answer format that reads quickly. However, readers expecting information beyond the basics will be well advised to continue their search elsewhere. There is little here for those who wish to live successfully with the illness. Moreover, the dry, clinical tone lends an air of bleakness, failing to recognize the large number of people diagnosed as bipolar that live healthy, successfully lives. Nevertheless, for readers seeking a beginner's understanding of mental illness and a guide through the morass of finding help, WHY AM I UP, WHY AM I DOWN will provide the practical advise needed to make a start.
Glad I read it!.......2003-12-28
I have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder after being misdiagnosed with depression for 10 years and this book made a lot of sense. I liked that it addressed the suicide issue, because most books don't mention suicide hardly at all. It stated that bipolar disorder is the #1 reason for suicide in the U.S. The book is easy to read and very interesting for the bipolar person. I also read my husband some of the pertinent stuff I thought he should know. I learned a lot about ECT. It is obviously written by people who know what they're talking about.
Straight Answers..........2003-04-04
Doctors, whose heads are cluttered with statistics, case studies, and theoretical jargon, often write books that are too heavy, boring, and technical for the average person to want to understand. My sincere thanks go to the Dell Publishers, who have had the intelligence to create a series of easy-to-read guides for educating the public about mental health.
Having experienced Bipolar Disorder for several years now, I finally decided it was time to accept that I have this disease and to begin to understand it. "Why Am I Up, Why Am I Down" is a fast-paced, accessible book that tells you what you need to know.
The main idea that runs through this book is: Bipolar Disorder is a serious illness and needs to be treated by a psychiatrist. Having the disorder can mean a significant impairment in life functioning and, though it is not curable, it is treatable.
The book is written like a big brochure. It's organized into eight chapters covering aspects of identifying and learning to live with the disease: (1) Definitions/Overview; (2) Symptoms/Diagnosis; (3) Causes; (4) How to Get Help; (5) The Role of Psychotherapy; (6) The Role of Medication; (7) Alternative Therapies; (8) Coping. Each chapter is broken down into a friendly question-and-answer format, asking questions like, "What is the typical day like for someone in a hypomanic state," and then answering them.
While there is a chapter on alternative therapies, one of the main ideas in this book is that, if you have Bipolar Disorder, you'll probably be taking medication (combined with other therapies).
What this book drills over and over again is that Bipolar Disorder is a serious medical condition that needs to be treated. "Bipolar disorder is the leading cause of suicide in the country," the book says. ...
a readable guide to bipolar disorder.......2003-03-16
This book provides a straightforward explanation of bipolar disorder that is easy to understand and will help educate those with the illness. Some reviewers have described the writing style as dry, and I agree with this- it's pretty much just a dry presentation of facts, though I found the style conducive to learning. I also found it interesting to hear about the illness from an experienced psychiatrist's perspective, as his opinions are grounded in a lot of clinical experience. I also agree with one other reviewer that he sometimes doesn't seem too kind in his description of patients. Nonetheless, definitely worth reading to expand your knowledge of this illness. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
