Book Description
Reading THE NATURAL PREGNANCY BOOK is like having your own personal herbalist and midwife at your side. Expertly written by Aviva Jill Romm, who has been providing family-centered natural health care for almost 20 years, it was one of the first books to explore botanical medicine and pregnancy. In this revised and updated edition, Ms. Romm thoughtfully follows the woman's journey from conception to birth, focusing on natural health. She describes herbs that can promote and maintain a healthy pregnancy (along with those you should avoid during your term) and the basics of a healthy diet, with an emphasis on natural foods. THE NATURAL PREGNANCY BOOK is a complete guide for the woman who envisions a safe pregnancy without technological intervention, as nature intended.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have for Women Geared Toward a Natural Pregnancy and Birth!.......2007-10-04
Aviva is able to write a book that is specific to each woman. I felt like the book was written just for me, but I know that anyone else who reads it will feel the same way. She is very supportive and has a way with making you comfortable about your pregnant body. The information in this book alone should be worth much more!!! A must have for any pregnant mama!
AWESOME !.......2007-04-04
This book is great - so much better than some of the others on the market. It offers thoughtful advise and a non-traditional approach to a health pregnancy. I love this book and refer to it almost daily during my pregnancy.
A MIDWIFE IN THE PAGES.......2007-02-13
I bought this book as soon as we found out we were pregnant and were constantly rewarded by the abundance and relevance of the information contained within. The true test of the book came unfortunately, when we miscarried at 13 weeks - it was then that the author seemed to step out of the pages and hold us to guide us through the transition of losing our first pregnancy. What a comfort and a joy to have a book that seemed to mirror our experience while supporting and advising on our path of action. She is brilliant and the book is a wonderful guide to our intrinsic knowledge.
Natural is the Best.......2007-02-11
For those wanting to research natural birth options, this is the book for you! It is very concise and thorough about all phases and steps of your pregnancy, using natural remedies and methods. I especially enjoyed the sections on nutrition and herbs. Amazing! Finally a book that doesn't just rely on medical drugs and such. And there is even an appendage in the back that instructs you on how to make your own herbal teas and tinctures, for optimal health for both you and your baby. Women have been having babies for thousands of years successfully, so I definitely think we are perfectly capable of having them in this time without medical intervention.
This is the book you need.......2007-01-31
When I got pregnant and I wanted a natural, holistic birth I bought every book I could get my hands on on the subject. However I could have saved myself a lot of time and money with just having this one and "Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way" but Susan McCuatcheon.
This book is excellent for pregnancy, explaining what need to know, all the way through the birth process. My husband also read with me and it was extremely helpful and interesting for him as well.
I highly recommend this for all pregnant women who want to understand what is going on with their own bodies rather than being a passive participant in the process.
Book Description
Only have time for the essentials? Maternity Nursing Care provides the core components of safe nursing practice for the obstetric client through application of the nursing process. Chronologically organized, the book covers women's health, pregnancy care, labor and childbirth, postpartum care, and newborn development. Both normal and high-risk pregnancy situations are addressed, including appropriate nursing considerations. Through prioritization of health promotion, emphasizing "care" over "treatment", and fostering the nurse-client relationship, the perspective is uniquely geared to the nurse. Customer Reviews:
High Quality Choice if interested in Alt Med AND mainstream ways.......2007-09-30
I got this book a year ago -- I was lucky to be in a pretty progressive bookstore at the time that we decided to start 'trying', and the staff there said they'd heard good things about it. Without that rec, I doubt I would have bought it because it doesn't have that name-recognition or reputation. I'm so glad I did. All the basics of pregnancy are here, in the same depth as a book like Dr.Sears's, etc, but in addition you get really thorough explanation of alternative medicine applications. It's a perfect resource if you really try to straddle both worlds. So don't be put off just because you may not have heard of this book! It's excellent! It was my only pregnancy book all thruout and I never felt that I needed to look at anything else.
Excellent !.......2007-04-04
I love this book. The author combines conventional medicine with alternative therapy and the result is fantastic. I asked my traditional ob/gyn many questions and he had no knowledge of alternative views and I found it very frustrasting. This book proves thoughtful insight to pregnancy that is often over looked by traditional ob/gyn.
THE pregnancy book.......2007-01-04
We've collected a shelf full of books during my wife's (first) pregnancy. While all serve a purpose, the Whole Pregnancy Handbook has become our go to book for just about everything. It's great information written in an easy to digest style that makes sense from a holistic and conventional medical point of view.
Great reference for my second time around.......2006-10-30
I checked this book out of the local library to look a up a couple of things before my first OB appointment. I had loaned out most of my own pregnancy library and just needed a little information. Any old pregnancy book would do, so my selection was kind of random. I ended up reading it almost cover to cover. Now that I have to return the library's copy I need to purchase my own.
I thought, in contradiction to the earlier reviewer's statements, that the book was highly detailed and very informative. What it lacked was the hysteria making format of other popular books on the subject. It was certainly organized differently so that might have thrown her off.
The information was well balanced and fairly comprehensive. I really enjoyed the section on nutrition and the chapter on prenatal yoga has certainly motivated me to find a class. What I liked most though was the reassurance that even at my advanced age (over 35) that I had a really good chance of having another healthy, uneventful pregnancy. Wonderful book!
Clarification.......2006-09-16
To clarify something the last reviewer said, there is in fact a chapter in this book that describes the month-by-month development of the baby and the physical and emotional changes a mother might experience. Full disclosure: I wrote the book with Joel Evans (so I had to give us 5 stars!).
Book Description
The bible for natural baby and child care.
For parents who live natural, environmentally responsible lives, child rearing can seem impossible. From feeding to healing, clothing to washing, raising children naturally can be a daunting taskunless you know how.
BR>Natural Baby and Childcare helps parents who want to raise a "green" baby. This comprehensive book discusses how to complement conventional medicine with alternative treatments such as homeopathy, essential oils, and herbal medicine; how to bathe your child without using damaging chemicals; and how to feed your baby healthy, organic food. As a physician and a mom, Dr. Lauren Feder skillfully bridges the divide between medicine and motherhood, empowering parents to personalize traditional child-rearing practices to their own child.
Natural Baby and Childcare answers common questions such as:
Are there any side effects of homeopathic medicine?
What alternatives are there to wasteful baby products, such as plastic diapers?
Is breastfeeding good for my baby?
Can chamomile really cure colic?
What side effects can vaccinations have?
Dr. Feder encourages parents to examine the conventional products that are offered and be choosy about which to include in their own children's lives. With information for all stages and ages, Natural Baby and Childcare is a comprehensive, intelligent, and reassuring guide to raising healthy and happy children. 50 photos.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive and authoritative.......2007-01-23
As new parents, this book offers unique insight into childrearing issues we are facing. Particularly valuable is the author's fresh rethinking of many aspects of childcare that are usually overlooked or taken for granted in our society, such as vaccination, diapering, diet, the sleep ritual, and the avoidance of toxic materials of which, unbeknownst to many of us, many baby toys and products are made.
As is befitting of a book written by a medical doctor who specializes in alternative medicine, a significant portion is devoted to an A-to-Z discussion of various childhood ailments, with conventional treatment discussed side-by-side with homeopathic options.
In short, this is a book that should hold a special place in the library of every thoughtful new parent.
EXTREMELY important piece of work.......2006-11-29
I have two children, the first of whom suffered greatly from traditional
Western pediatric approaches. Every time anything was wrong,
he would be prescribed yet another dose of antibiotics and sent
on his way with little or no "preventative" or "alternative" methods
ever discussed, let alone prescribed.
This book represents a MAJOR milestone in the treatment of
infants and young children. It emphasizes a healthful,
holistic and homeopathic approach toward dealing with the complex
issues of children's health. I believe the treatments that are revealed
by the ultra-imformed Dr Feder will become a new "status quo" for
a country (US) that is drowning in antibiotics and misinformation.
Thank you Dr Feder for providing us with a new blue print for
developing a healthful and informed attitude toward the
treatment of childhood ailments and creating a life of
wellness and happiness!
Glad to be a parent starting out with this book!.......2006-08-29
Natural Baby is just the reference book I was looking for. I have a 1.5-year-old son and would have benefited from this reading from when he was first born. Luckily I have another on the way and am much more educated on the subject of babies! My Mom is very much into conventional medicine (just give him Tylenol and he will be fine) which is not where I am at this point in time. So this book and its teachings are just the thing I need for support of a holistic approach to raising my children. Her book is very detailed. It has everything you need to know about vaccinations, childhood ailments, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, homeopathy, and much more. I thought I was up on most natural and non-intrusive ways to raise my children.
Then I found the section on what clothes are made of and what is in the plastic that makes up the toys he plays with as well as the pacifier that goes in his mouth and on and on and on. It is nice to know there is a Doctor out there that is attuned to how the body, mind and spirit all work together. I like the fact she has two children of her own and the remedies in this book have been tried and proven. My son bumped his mouth a few months back and with his new teeth got a fat lip. I used the remedy Arnica Montana that I had on hand (luckily, thanks to this book) and the swelling went down almost immediately.
Thank you Dr. Feder for such a comprehensive book that I will get for people for Christmas presents... The info is much appreciated :)
Finally.. A book for 21st Century health care.......2006-08-09
Five years ago when I had my son everyone and their sister told me to get "What to Expect" ....and I got it and I read it and I felt less than nothing. Just a big, fat, clunk. nada.
I am much more crunchy than a lot of moms but I'm not that far out there. (No homebirth for me) but gosh, what I would have done for something like this book back then. When my son was having a fever everything in me said, "skip the tylenol" it just felt wrong to me... and in fact in Feder's book (page 362) she describes it best.."The fever and its accompanying symptoms, whle anoying are vital in helping to strengthen the immune system and ward off future infection." I now let my son burn off his fevers and I am willing to push it to 104.....this just felt right in my gut and that's what makes Feder's book so great.. it answers to some of us who have different guts than the ones that ring over the 'what to expect' books...
A must-have book for parents.......2006-07-21
The great thing about this book is that it gives you both the "standard medicine" approach to any of your child's problems, and also the "alternative" approach. This means that, unless you have an emergency situation, you have the option of trying the alternative approach first, to see how you like it. Often you can avoid having to give your child antibiotics, or steroids, etc. I think this is what makes this book unique.

Book Description
A nurturing and empowering guide for the mother-to-be interested in a holistic pregnancy and birth experience.
The newly pregnant woman faces a multitude of changes in her mind, life, and body, some of which are addressed by traditional medical care but many of which are not. In this holistic guide, the expectant mother will find warm and reassuring advice that will help her stay calm, focused, and energized during this exciting time and beyond.
Rather than treat the arrival of a baby as strictly a one-moment-in-time medical event, author Karen Salt provides advice and wisdom to "treat" the whole woman--her emotions and her physical changes--and covers the entire year-long experience of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Salt's holistic approach unveils for mothers-to-be the backbone of the doula role--to provide support, information, advocacy, and facilitation to women during pregnancy, labor, and early motherhood--and teaches her the many ways to use the doula philosophy to nurture herself through the process. From meditation and relaxation exercises, to fitness and nutrition advice to tips for achieving "positive energy living," this comprehensive guide puts mothers in control of their pregnancy, their birthing experience, and their approach to this wonderful and life-altering time.
Customer Reviews:
Truly Comforting Book.......2007-07-01
This is the first pregnancy book I read that really helped me understand and feel comforted about my pregnancy.
Lots of other books have obvious agendas, including trying to convince you to have a hospital or home birth. Other books read more like a medical text book. After reading those kinds of books, I was frustrated and stressed out about the pregancy.
This book reads like a talk with a best friend or family member who really wants to help you. She gives great advice about how to take care of yourself and your baby as well as real talk about the different things that may or may not happen during the birth.
The REAL girlfriend's guide to pregnancy & birth!!.......2003-01-23
Forget the "other girlfriend's" advice about shaving your legs or painting your toenails...Karen Salt offers REAL, supportive, thoughtful, and informative advice for the mother-to-be. From how we view our changing bodies to journaling to choosing a care provider / birth place to postpartum self-care...this book has it all. Her warm voice comes through the pages to gently encourage thought, informed decision-making and a renewed sense of honoring the self through this incredible time!
Like a trusted friend or close relative, Karen includes volumes of information in this one tiny book. Easy to pick up and read from cover to cover (rather than having that overwhelming hit that many books on this topic do!), I highly suggest this book for every pregnant woman.
Sink back into the loving pages of this book! Let Karen guide you gently through this amazing journey - with love, support, and intelligence!

Customer Reviews:
Great natural, nurturing approach to pregnancy........2006-05-19
I think this is a great book. It not only covers lots of herbal information that's helpful during pregnancy but also offers a very nurturing attitude and practices. It covers natural remedies to common problems such as indigestion, constipation, all kinds of conditions.
It has lots of recipes for herbal teas, infusions, baths, some aromatherapy and recipes for eating. It even includes recipes for making home-made baby formula and cheeses! I find the ingredients will not be hard to find at a whole foods store or on-line. And the methods are not complicated. I am a beginner at home-making herbals but do cook a lot and its just like cooking.
As one commenter posted, it does not talk about the various deliveries available...nor does it claim to. Its an herbal book, not a delivery book! If you want to read about natural birthing options, I recommend Active Birth by Janet Balaskas.
I think her honesty about her decisions is refreshing and encourages us to be ourselves despite nay-sayers comparing them to some idealized standards.
It is a great resource to get women to really nurture and pamper themselves with natural substances during this most important time of growing a baby! In fact, it has excellent inspirations for women in general. I will definitely go check out her other book.
A safe and comforting guide to Pregnancy.......2001-09-11
A wonderful little book brimming with great ideas and tips for pregnancy care and either maintaining or introducing herbs into the home. I found it a fascinating read, and although I do not practice herbalism, I feel that it offers a new, adaptable and exciting alternative outlook on both mother-to-be and newborn care. I only wish this book had been around when I was pregnant, a time when hospital birth was the only option. It makes a cesarean birth seem less frightening and with all the advice on breast feeding, milk production preparation and breast care, I know a lot of women will find comfort in their choices to nurse, or not. More importantly, this book truly makes the pregnant women feel 'loved' and special, even if she's going it alone, and who wouldn't want to feel pampered nine months and counting?
A comforting pregnancy companion.......2001-09-08
Too many books on pregnancy follow a doctor/patient cycle of what to expect, what to eat, how to exercise, and so on. I found that The Pregnancy Herbal came across as a GIFT to all women who want to experience a CHANGE in opinion - It isn't about natural birthing, it's about supporting and creating a happy and beautiful mother and a healthy fetus/baby, during pregnancy. With medicinal, cosmetic and nutritional herbs, I found that Ms Harper-Roth's own pregnancy experiences and research filled her little book with hundreds of easy to follow ideas to make every woman feel special, loved, and self-expressive. Cesarean or natural birth, at home or in a hospital, it's a birth experience. What matters, and I feel what comes across as important in this book, is that the pregnant woman herself, is made to feel pampered from conception to birth.
Save your money and buy a different reference.......2001-07-26
If you're looking for a well-written, well-researched, informative herbal reference for pregnancy/childbirth issues, this is NOT the one. For an herbal book, it's shockingly UN-natural. She assumes that the mother will be birthing at a hospital (doesn't even mention birth choices or the possibility of homebirth as an option) does not even touch on natural birth choices (and mentions her first birth was an emergency c-section, second birth was an ELECTIVE c-section). She simply pays lip-service to breastfeeding (""The best advice I can give is go ahead and give nursing a try. If you both like it, keep going as long as possible; if you don't, stop. Don't feel guilty about your decision: it's your body.") and gives downright BAD advice for things such as treating mastitis. But since she only nursed her 2nd and 3rd children for two months each and then switched them to homemade formula, what would one expect? This is a book for dilettantes who think herbalism is a trendy thing to do, but aren't serious about it. If you're looking for a serious and GOOD herbal reference for pregnancy, stick with Romm, Ody or Gladstar.

Written by Heather Burton, a certified childbirth instructor and founder of the Midwifery Alliance, and James Marti, executive director of the Holistic Medical Research Foundation, Holistic Pregnancy and Childbirth is a refreshing collection of tips to make every month of pregnancy more comfortable. The authors first explain various holistic therapies, from acupuncture and acupressure to massage, meditation, homeopathy, and yoga, then detail their various roles in each month of pregnancy and in the various stages of childbirth and postbirth bonding. For example, moxibustion, an acupuncture technique that involves burning incense-like cones of herbs, has been shown to be almost 75 percent effective in helping babies move out of breech birth position, thereby preventing cesarean sections. Many other facts in the book are also quite revealing, such as that pregnant women who are having marital problems or are feeling a lack of social support are more likely to give birth to colicky babies.
Women and their partners who are looking for an empowering resource for a healthier pregnancy will find this book to be a solid reference. It explains the difference between doulas, midwives, and obstetricians; the pros and cons of home births, hospital births, birth centers, and water births; and how to determine which of these options is best for your situation. The herbal and other natural techniques for relieving common pregnancy-related problems, such as sciatic pain and insomnia, are bound to come in handy, as are the "Especially for Fathers" sections throughout the book, with tips on ways to keep the mom-to-be comfortable and happy. Month-by-month checkup forms, a guide for further reading, and lists of dozens of natural-health organizations are also included. --Erica Jorgensen

I'm sure they had good intentions, but..........2004-02-21
When I found this title at my local bookstore, I was excited by the concept of it, but I didn't have to flip through it for long before I was taken aback by the negative tone and lack of trust in the process of pregnancy and childbirth. (Much like the overrated "What to Expect..." series, unfortunately!)
I found a number of sections that felt, to me, like slight, strange misrepresentations of the facts and norms, and
Then I stumbled upon an entire paragraph that had no place in any book written by people with any interest in truth or accuracy: In their description of norms in the 3rd stage of labor(delivery of placenta), in the home setting, they write that your homebirth midwife will reach up into your uterus to "remove any remaining placental tissue."
This is not true. In fact, it is a horrifying idea.
I sincerely hope that they will correct this frightening, misleading, erroneous section in any later editions of the book.
Not so "Holistic" than the title says.......2000-04-29
I order this book right after I bought another holistic pregnancy book "The Natural Pregnancy Book" by Aviva Jill Romm (I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is seriously intersted in natural and holistic pregnancy). Unlike Romm's "natural" approach to the pregnancy, this book seems a little too preachy and less "holistic" and "natural" than I expected. It has too much of the "official outlines" from the traditional medical practices and rather than encouraging and celebrating prengancy, they overemphasize on the threat of miscarriage and do not provide enough information for preventing it. It gives a general overview of holistic treatment and what goes on during pregnancy, so I think this is an okay book for those who just heard of "holistic treatment" but don't know what they really are. I was dissapointed overall and I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is looking into a good natural/holistic pregnancy book.
A great companion during pregnancy, great natural alternativ.......2000-03-31
This is a wonderful book, it has an overview of tons of holistic treatments and how they affect pregnancy, a month by month guide with holistic treatments to aide that months ailments. It has diet and excercise tips galore, what to expect at the dr visits and during delivery. It even has little sidebars for fathers each chapter. It is well written and has *english* translations for alot of the medical terms. I love this book! Great for the women who prefer natural treatments, and dont want to keep calling thier doctor about whats okay to take for a headache!

informative, sometimes biased.......2004-08-18
I thought this book was informative, especially when it laid out in no uncertain terms the difficulties of becoming pregnant for women over 35. I also feel it has a great deal of information, especially homeopathic remedies which the reader will not find anywhere else. I object to a bias in the book in favor of career professionals. The book explains that women have to work, which may not be the case and does not link enough the obesity epidemic to the mass exodus of women out of the home, to which it is directly related. Poor eating habits and the mass consumption of convenience foods has led to the prevalence of obesity in our society, as has a general lack of respect for what generations of women used to do in the home, prepare healthy meals. While the book does touch on obesity's relationship to infertility, it fails to adequately explore the reasons for this situation.

This book had some great information that I hadn't read in other similar titles. I was most interested in the sections on movement therapies such as yoga and qi gong, although I wish there had been more specific information such as particular yoga poses that are beneficial. Many times in this book, the reader is told to consult a professional (yoga teacher, naturopath, accupuncturist) rather than being told what they can specifically do on their own. I suppose that is the most prudent course. Still, this book exposed me to some new ideas and I ended up feeling more optimistic than I had before I read it about my chances to conceive.
