Book Description

What does it mean to be "gifted"? What's good—and not so good—about being identified as gifted? How can parents make sure that their gifted children get the learning opportunities they need? And how can parents cope with the unique challenges gifted kids present?

Every parent of a gifted child has question like these. Since 1991, when we published the original edition of this guide, parents have looked here for answers. Now revised and updated with information about current research and legislation, new examples, new resources (including Web sites), and more, it's the first place to turn for facts, insights, strategies, and sound advice.

You'll learn what giftedness is (and isn't), what makes gifted kids so special, how kids are identified as gifted, and why some kids fall through the cracks during the identification process. You'll discover encouraging practical tips for living with your gifted child—and handling the endless questions, high energy, and too-smart mouth that often go along with giftedness. You'll find out how to keep from raising a "nerd," how to prevent perfectionism, and when to get help. And you'll learn how to advocate for your child's education at school and in your state.

Friendly, inviting, and fun to read, THE SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR PARENTS OF GIFTED KIDS is for any parent who has ever wondered.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for families and schools.......2007-05-22

There are many books on the topic of gifted and talented children as it relates to their education and needs. However, I found this book addressed the gifted child from many different aspects. It touched upon their academic and social-emotional needs. It provides parents with great insight into these children in terms of how they think, characteristics that are common and the dangers of mis-diagnosing gifted children with disorders such as ADHD. It is easy to read straight through but is also set up in such a way that a particular section of interest can stand alone. I had purchased this book for my own use and then purchased 7 more to present to our local Board of Education. Our district did not have a program for gifted and talented children on the elementary level. With this book in conjunction with other research a small group of parents and myself presented an entire packet to our Board of Ed. to make a case for this much needed program. We were successful. The program was added to our district's curriculum for next year. This book helped greatly to help us navigate and advocate for our children. Much recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Book's title is misleading.......2007-03-08

This book deals quite extensively with how to help your child if the school he/she goes to offers no gifted program or a pull-out program.

I didn't really find that any of the issues I deal with in my school district (which has gifted classes) or with my son (who seems to have some attention issues specifically related to his giftedness) were answered.

It does list other resources... Maybe those will be helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Seattle Mom.......2007-01-23

Would recommend this book to teachers, coaches, anyone working with children. Helps to recognize giftedness in children, understand and deal with them.

Having a gifted child, the book hit buttons on every page.

5 out of 5 stars Happy I bought this book.......2007-01-18

If you have been told that your child is gifted and you want to know what the gist of it is and want to start with reading one book before investing in every book out there, this is the book for you. I had a long list of books to order but decided to try just one first and it happened to be this one and I am so glad that it was. It gives a great general view of what to expect, what to do, and what to feel. It mentioned something that I felt when my daughters teacher told me that she "may grow up to discover the cure for cancer", and that is the guilt! Instead of feeling only proud, which I do, I felt as tho maybe the teacher thought I wasn't a good enough parent for such a smart child and that having such an ignorant parent could ruin her intellect! I felt a bit ashamed and thanks to this book I no longer do. I don't like and don't read self-help books and did not expect to read this book cover to cover, if at all, but it turned out to be a great asset and comfort to me.

5 out of 5 stars Survival Guide.......2007-01-17

This book is great. I have read many books on gifted children and this one is one of the best. Gifted kids are challenging and when you discover your child it gifted you think "now what". This book is very helpful.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Practical, usable advice.......2007-08-22

I have been searching for a book such as this. This book had me alternately laughing and almost crying because every single page had something that I could relate to. I loved the use of real life family case history to illustrate what works and what is disastrous. Many practical solutions were offered to effect order back into your home. This book helped me tremendously to understand both what my son is going through and why I feel the way I do when communicating with him. Great wonderful resource, I've been telling other parents of gifted children that I know to run to the bookstore and get this.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful Information.......2007-01-25

I found this book extremely helpful in identifying ways to help my gifted twins, one of whom is a traditional learner and the other is not. The book has great insight and information, plus plenty of real-world examples of how parents deal with issues unique to gifted children. One puzzling thing, though, was the notion that there's an anti-gifted bias and that parents of gifted children are somehow seen by educators as meddlers or pushy parents. The author also seems to have the idea that public schools don't know how to deal with gifted children. That hasn't been my experience so far (our public school has an excellent GT & HGT program) and don't expect it to be as my children get older.

5 out of 5 stars Hands-on Effective Parenting Tools.......2006-12-11

Raising Gifted Kids has helped me to understand my children better and we are a happier, more cooperative family. This book is my reference guide; it provides clear guidance that is easily comprehendible and implement able. I found it so helpful that I gave my boy's teacher a copy; I recommend it to everybody who has an influence on a child.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Anyone who's ever wondered..........2006-11-02

This book is for anyone who has ever wondered if a child under their care might be gifted, and what to do about it. It's full of affective approaches to a wide range of puzzling, exhausting, and endearing behaviors, and important considerations for educational options. The author has a friendly writing style and is a great source of comfort, confirmation, and inspiration; I will be referring to this book often in the upcoming years.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Parents.......2006-11-01

The author uses her expertise in the area of child devlopment and her vast experience working with gifted children and their families to present a reader friendly guide to parenting gifted children. This book is an excellent resource for parents, teachers, school psychologists and principals.

This book will guide you on how to deal with everyday situations and has suggestions on activities as well as how to focus and develop the emotional needs of this high demand child. This book is a must have your money will not be waisted!

Book Description

Though academic abilities have always been important in determining whether your child is gifted, talent in the visual and performing arts, leadership qualities, and intellectual curiosity are just as vital. But unless We as parents help nurture those talents, our gifted children can become bored, socially aggressive, or, ironically, underachievers in the classroom.

Here is a practical, informative, and authoritative primer for raising and educating our gifted children from preschool to adolescence. Beginning with sensible strategies to determine whether -- and in which area -- your child is gifted, this book takes parents through selecting an appropriate day-care center, a school, and a home reference library It helps us figure out where our role stops and the schools role begins as well as detailing ways to keep our children's creativity alive and how to cope with sibling rivalry and our own doubts and fears Also included are a recommended reading list, a special section on the roles of the computer and television in your child's and much more.

"It's difficult to imagine a stone left unturned by this excellent guide. So wise and rich ... it seems a shame not to put it into the hands of every parent."

4 out of 5 stars A good book on dealing with gifted children..........2006-04-10

My son has shown a gifted ability early on. He was reading by the age of 2 and was absorbing knowledge like a sponge. When he reached age 4, he was reading at a first grade to almost second grade level and starting to do math. I was not sure how the keep him challenged and he was getting super bored with school. This book had many great pointers for both gifted and average kids. I am of the belief that all children have the advanced capacity to learn and that all children have learning "growth spurts" and stagnation in learning. This book points out getting passed the lull in learning. This book really lays out what the child might be feeling because is written from a person who is gifted and understands that from the child perspective. It also really is a good source for dealing with gifted children when they reach their teens. I definitely keep the book handy for when my son reachs that age. It is a very good read for children's education!

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read for frustrated parents!.......2000-03-11

This book is a wonderful resource for parents and teachers alike. The explanations of gifted children and their strenghths and weaknesses have never been explained in such simple terms. Parents can rejoice in knowing their child is not alone and teachers and finally understand that gifted doesn't mean perfect. I would recommend this book to any parent/teacher/administrator that feels they need help in understanding some of the actions of their "brighter" students. Thank you Amazon for recommending it!

Packed with sound advice drawn from both the latest research and examples from real families, Your Gifted Child covers all the major issues that arise for gifted children and their parents, from birth to age seven. 5 out of 5 stars Treasure Chest of Ideas.......2001-08-22

I first read this fine book when it was published in 1989. Because of the abundance of timeless, insightful ideas it contains, I gave it to my daughter when she became a mother. Potential readers looking at the Contents page will immediately see the wide range of topics discussed on the subject of giftedness, and how to recognize and nurture it during the critical developmental years of birth to seven. The chapters abound with ideas on stimulating the creativity, curiosity, social, emotional and intellectual development of this young individual.

Services which are available and what to expect upon school matriculation are discussed. My daughter found the Appendix section especially useful. It contains helpful developmental checklists. By matching the lists to the child's ability parents have a practical way to identify strengths and weaknesses of their child. Parents and grandparents who are curious to know if their child is gifted and/or how to effectively deal with that special individual will find this book to be a treasure chest of ideas.

Book contains many useful lists / charts / comparisons to define giftedness. Many helpful hints about raising a gifted child. Main criticism is that the book is more about raising children in general -- and may push those with "normal" kids into thinking they have gifted ones and down that track -- when they should not. Gifted kids are the exception, not the norm as this book makes it seem.

4 out of 5 stars Great for gifted kids and non-traditional learners!.......2002-11-01

This book is full of great, original ideas for teaching gifted kids at home. There's helpful information for determining whether and how your child is gifted, but for me, the most useful part was the language arts exercises themselves. There is a wide range of ideas, writing topics, and suggestions for projects -- they all lend themselves very well to adaptation for different skill levels and learning styles. It's been a great resource and is my favorite supplement to the English textbooks we use with our kids.

2 out of 5 stars too simplistic.......2002-06-01

This is not the book to buy if you want tips on how to parent the gifted child. Galbraith wastes time catagorizing different types of "giftedness" and ends each section with a few tips on how to parent. I felt this book was overpriced for the information it contained.

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money.......2001-03-08

This book is heavy on vague lists of what to look for in children who might be gifted. It contains very few specifics and reads more like a book intended to convince parents that their children are gifted rather than a serious analysis of the extent of their skills. Not worth the money to me.

2 out of 5 stars For parents of tots only.......2001-01-11

I was disappointed that this book talked only about children identified as gifted when in preschool or earlier. The anecdotes and examples all refer to children less than 8, usually less than 6. It is not uncommon for a child to be identified or maybe even BECOME? gifted until later. I know several kids who weren't "certifiably" gifted until 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, even one in the 7th grade. I was hoping for more information on identifying giftedness in these 'older' children.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightul Gem for Parents of Young Children........2000-08-16

An entry level book for parents of children ages two to eight.Includes characteristics of gifted, descriptions of terms used in gifted education, perfectionism, parenting the gifted child, working with the schools, the rights of parents, etc. Has resources that include book titles, organizations and web sites.A gem that should be the first book that parents, grandparents and child care providers read when they wonder "Is this child gifted?".

5 out of 5 stars You Know Your Child is Gifted When..........2000-08-16

I LOVED this book! I got it in the mail and read the first 1/3 of it in the post office parking lot. It's easy to read, has amusing anecdotes, and is full of useful information.

As the parent of a highly gifted 5 y/o, I've read most of what's out there for parents of gifted children. This book is great for someone who's just embarking upon the wondrous journey of knowing your child is gifted--or for someone who loves a gifted child and yet doesn't quite know what being gifted means.

I'll be giving this book as a gift to people for whom it's important to know my daughter's wants/needs for challenges and understanding, like teachers (especially those who don't have training in gifted education), relatives and others who are special to us. Thanks, Judy Galbraith and Ken Vinton for a great book!

In this competitive age, where children are busier than their parents and parents are obsessed with their child's achievements, psychiatrist Ian Tofler and writer Theresa Foy DiGeronimo have asked an urgent question: where do parents draw the line between encouraging and pushing too hard? Their book, Keeping Your Kids Out Front Without Kicking Them from Behind is a compelling and practical blueprint for preventing kids from being overscheduled, overworked, and overly pressured.

To map the differences between encouragement and exploitation, the authors describe relationships between parents and children throughout history. They underline the squirmy similarity between the 17th century child working long hours in English coal mines and the 21st century child expected to practice piano for four hours after school, play football when injured, or attend summer SAT boot camp. "We believe the line is drawn at the point that separates the parent's needs and goals from those of the child," say Tofler and DiGeronimo.

Vivid examples drawn from both celebrity children (actress Natalie Portman and 7-year-old pilot Jessica Dubroff ) and talented kids from across the country suggest both guidelines and red flag warnings for parents who want to support the development of talent while protecting their children. One chapter grabs narcissistic, needy parents by the lapels and gives their behavior the bad label it deserves: "Achievement by Proxy Disorder"--a syndrome where the parents need for fame, wealth, and recognition (as gained through a child's accomplishments) takes priority over the child's needs and goals. Other insightful chapters focus on a seven-step plan that avoids APD and helps parents to evaluate and encourage their talented children. Tofler and DiGeronimo urge parents to settle for nothing less than putting the fun back into being a child. This wise and necessary book suggests a wholehearted golden rule for nurturing talent: love children for what they are; not for what they do. --Barbara Mackoff

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate parents' guide.......2002-12-01

Smutny covers the basic concepts and issues facing the families of gifted kids. Better yet, she provides concrete, detailed strategies for parents as they negotiate the best possible education for their gifted children. Lots of real-life stories, lots of nuts-and-bolts advice, right down to the questions to ask and the things to _avoid_ saying.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best resources to start with...........2002-09-23

I have read many books on the subject of parenting gifted children and trying to meet their academic needs -- this is one of the better ones, and certainly one of the most practical. It will help parents navigate the school system and advocate for their child's educational needs. Reading this book was like talking to a friend who has "been there." It is full of good reference/resource advice and is easy to read.

Book Description

Every child is a unique and precious treasure from God.

And while each one has been given talents and strengths, some children are obviously more gifted academically. If you've been blessed with one or more gifted children, you know that this joy also raises plenty of questions and concerns. What will keep them challenged and best meet their needs? Will traditional schools suffocate or stimulate their gifts?

Vicki Caruana is able to help you answer these questions and more, thanks to her strong ties in both the gifted education and homeschooling communities. She covers a wide range of topics in-depth, from the characteristics of and myths about gifted kids, to matching teaching and learning styles and handling family dynamics. With stories from her own experiences and those of other parents, advice from experts in the field, and extensive appendices on resources and support groups, she gives you a source of encouragement and guidance in making educational choices for gifted children from preschool-age on up.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Christian Resource.......2006-12-30

It was pretty obvious to me this book would be a christian resource when I read the back cover. If you are not a Christian, then this is NOT the book for you. However if you are looking for a book about dealing with your child's giftedness with a Christian slant this is a great resource. It gets at the heart of emotional issues and how to help your child look at their giftedness while realizing it is God's gift to be used for His kingdom. It is especially strong in social and emotional areas, while lacking in acedemic resources. The many quotes from the Bible are helpful to those kids who read their Bible and may help them to appreciate their gift and act humble about it.

3 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Christian, and other books are better.......2006-02-09

Although I am Christian, I did not find the author's use of religious perspective helpful in conveying information about educating gifted children. That aside, it is not among the better books I've read about raising gifted children. I thought the author reflected about gifted children rather than giving parents or educators new ideas or a framework in which to understand and encourage gifted children. My current favorite is "Teaching Gifted Kids in the Regular Classroom" by Susan Winebrenner.

4 out of 5 stars Just be aware..........2005-12-14

I did find this book helpful. At least, it did support a lot of what I recognized about my own child. However, I was unprepared for the fact that it quotes a fair amount of Christian scripture. There is nothing in the descriptions I read before hand that let me know - although is was published by a "Good News" press which I didn't notice. Many people may find the quotes supportive and loving. Unfortunately, I found it took away from my focus on my G/T child's education - probably because I was not looking for a "christian" book on G/T education. If I had been, this book would fit the bill.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and informative starting point.......2003-02-11

Educating Your Gifted Child by Vicki Caruana is a thoroughly user-friendly resource for parents of gifted children, dispelling common myths about parenting and about especially gifted/talented children, offering stories drawn from true-life experience, sharing encouragement for those having a responsibility to raise a talented or gifted child, and presenting very practical advice on gifted children's academic, emotional, and social needs. Covering preschool through college and challenges on the job, and specifically written for parents who work closely with the public school system, as well as homeschooling parents, Educating Your Gifted Child provides an excellent and informative starting point.
