Great book .......2007-09-10
I got this book for my twelve year old son who is turning 13 at the end of the year. Although I did not read it myself, it was certainly a conversation starter between my son and I about sexuality, drugs and other stuff kids are usually too scared to ask their parents. He read the book fairly quickly, which was great because it is hard to get him to read on his own. He told me he enjoyed the book and it had provided him with information on a lot of the things that he was interested in(scared about or anxious about). I would definitely recommend this book to others of his age category.
Great book for teens.......2007-08-30
We bought this book for our son who is now a freshman in high school. It covered alot of information and he seemed to be more receptive of some of it coming "from someone else" other than his parents. It's a great book!
Font changes make book practically unreadable.......2007-04-19
The random font changes throughout this book are simply ghastly, making the book practically unreadable and detracting from the seriousness of the topic.
Much better are: "What Smart Teenagers Know...About Dating, Relationships & Sex" by Deborah Hatchell, "The Guy Book" by J. Mavis, and my 15 year-old son's choice, "Doing it Right" by B. Pardes.
Mom! God! You're weird for buying this for me! .......2007-01-10
That's the phrase I heard from my son when I gave this to him. He also informed me that his cousin, whom I also gave this book to, thinks I'm weird. But guess what?? THEY ARE READING IT!
So does it bother me to be the weird mom/aunt? Heck no! This book is very informative and gives them the info in a humor-filled and age appropriate way. It's an easy read.
I suggest parents read it through first and address issues as they see fit.
1 of the best books ive read.......2006-12-12
first off i have bad spelling so excuse that.... any way i laughed thru the whole book i got it in the school library and spent a whole period reading it..... i recomend this book it goes thru every thing from dating to drugs from sex to materbating to porn to depression... it helps alot with all those embarsing questions.... you should defently get it

Book Description
There have been a proliferation of books on the market for young woman extolling virtue and purity and the value of the Christian lifestyle. But are young girls reading books on virtue and spiritual growth? Or are they reading the teen counterparts to what they perceive as the sophisticated popular adult magazines that promise to reveal (at least the latest) secrets to beauty, fashion, thinness, love, and happiness?
Vicki Courtney knows teen girls. Her message is exactly what they need to hear to counter the culture's lies and distortions about who they are and what they should become. TeenVirtue will give them the information they need in a format they will read. Laid out like a sophisticated magazine, your teen girl will be able to use this book and share it with her friends.
Customer Reviews:
Teenvirtue: Real Issues, Real Life...A Teen Girl's Survival Guide.......2007-07-15
Teenvirtue: Real Issues, Real Life...A Teen Girl's Survival Guide is a book with a magazine like look and feel aimed at teen girls. Like most teen magazines, there are articles discussing the important and not so vital issues of being a teenager; quizzes; discussion about friendships and boys; discussion about fashion and beauty; and lots of colourful eye catching photographs and graphics. Unlike most teen magazines, however, this book does not contain advertisements featuring anorexic models wearing sexy clothing advertising themselves as fair game for any male who wants to treat them badly. Instead, this book attempts to illustrate that women are more than boy toys and that respecting themselves is much more important than attracting this type of attention.
Though aimed at Christian teens, I believe that most of the issues dealt with in this Teenvirtue: Real Issues, Real Life...A Teen Girl's Survival Guide would be equally valuable for those girls who are not Christian. Thus, I suggest that parents of teens buy this book and put it on the coffee table. The teen magazine-like cover will attract your daughter's attention and she will immediately start to flip though the book. No doubt, she will have some very strong opinions on the subjects included in this book. In this way, this book may create some very valuable opportunities to listen to and talk to your teen about these issues and other things happening in their teenage lives.
Right Idea Wrong Direction.......2007-04-01
90 percent of worlds population will have sex before they are married. Teaching Abstinence has been proven impossible. Vicki Courtney's argument that condoms only protect 50 percent of the time is inaccurate. Even If it was true, that is still 50 percent of the 90 percent that will be protected. People will always want to have sex, it's human nature!
Teen Survival Guide indeed!.......2005-12-09
Vicki Courtney discusses real concerns of real teen girls frankly, truthfully and honestly without sounding preachy. I especially liked the chapter on eating disorders and fashion and the assurances that what's depicted as trendy in the fashion magazines is far from reality. She lets girls know that it IS okay to be normal....with a far more accurate portrait of what "normal" really is in today's world where girls are constantly bombarded with messages to be sexy and thin instead of simply enjoying their youth. An excellent resource for Christian parents and their girls, and for anyone else with a daughter. This is a great book for moms and daughters to read together, and would make a great gift tweens and teens. Highly recommend.
Looks like a magazine; offers great advice.......2005-04-01
Looks like the best of teen magazines but carries real-world advice with a Christian perspective. I really liked this book! It had good, but not judgemental advice on everything from clothes, pierced belly buttons, tatoos and friends to boyfriends, sex and beauty. It doesn't go into explicit details... but it offers solid advice for teen girls growing up in tough times. I think maybe the best section is quotes from teen guys talking about what they wished teen girls knew! I plan to give this magazine/book as a gift.

"One of the weirdest words in the English language is puberty. Not only does it sound funny--pew-berty or pube-hurty--it also makes us feel funny now and then as we are going through it. Not ha-ha funny--although there is that, too--but scared, awkward, sad, wildly-happy-one-minute-and-utterly-miserable-the-next, gorgeous, ugly, kind, mean, goofy, silly, you-name-it funny." With these down-to-earth and wise words, authors Margaret Blackstone and Elissa Haden Guest begin their wonderfully straightforward, useful, friendly book on girl stuff: you know, menstruation, peer pressure, zits, emotional roller coasters, health, and "what you never wanted anyone to know you want to know about sex." Homey tips about getting bloodstains out of underpants (and reassurances that it happens to everyone) and what clothing to wear during your period ("Keep a dark sweatshirt at school to wrap around your waist in case you leak through") are interspersed with information about self-defense methods, suggestions on how to tell when a friend is truly a good friend, reproductive anatomy lessons, and stress-busting activities. Sexual orientation is addressed openly and with a liberal attitude. Quotations and questions from girls add an even more authentic teen essence: "The cool girls are the sun, and I feel like I'm on Venus." Barbara Pollack's amusing drawings get to the heart of the matter, without ever being overbearing. This book is the big sister you always hoped for: reassuring, informative, matter-of-fact, nonjudgmental. (Ages 9 to 15) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Girls approaching puberty have lots of questions: How can they get rid of zits? Why do they sometimes feel cranky and scared? Are they "normal"? With a relaxed conversational style, this comprehensive and compassionate guide will help answer those questions and many more--even those that are too scary or embarrassing to ask.
Loaded with information that will help tween girls understand and cope with the physical and psychological changes that go along with puberty, this updated and expanded coming-of-age guide will be shared and read over and over until all those changes don't seem so confusing.

This was a good introductory book for me and my daughter to "break the ice" on her growing up and approaching puberty
A perfect fit.......2007-02-14
My neice's daughter is will be 12 this week and really doesn't have anyone to talk to about "girl things." So, I purchased this book for her. She enjoyed it so much that she read straight through it, coming very close to finishing it the same day she received it.
Its Not For Anyone Under 11 !!!!.......2006-11-07
This Book Is good If You prepared To Read stufff That may make You Squeemish I Read It All The Way Through And It Was A Little Icky But They pretty Much Anwsered All My Questions I recommend it IF You Are Ready
It Really Helped Me With My Acne Questions This Book is Helpful
Accurate and gentle .......2006-08-17
While I would never, ever, ever recommend this book for girls under tge age of 9 or so, I feel this is an appropriate book for girls ages 10-16.
Yes the book talks about things that may make a parent squeamish, but the book is there so your child gets the information you may not want to come out and say because you are uncomfortable with it.
At times the book is a bit more detailed than I prefer, such as the description of foreplay, however the book is never suggestive or graphic. The information is quite accurate and presented in a mature and gentle fashion.
This book is everything I wish I had known as a preteen and teen that my mother didn't share with me, instead I learned falsehoods from my friends at school. I am much more open and upfront with my daughters but I know there are things they want to ask about but don't know how to ask. It is for those things that I am glad this book is available.
PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW IF ITS THE ONLY ONE YOU READ !!! From a Very Satisfied [...]!.......2006-06-07
I just found this book at a thrift store, and started reading it after i bought it, I cant believe anyone would give this book a bad review, I dont think nine is to young AT ALL, when I was 9 all my friends were talking about all this stuff and I knew nothing about it, I felt secluded and not a part of my class at all, anything I did know is what i had heard my friends talk about but I never got to see the whole picture or find out what the missing peices to the puzzle was, until now,my whole life my parents have always kept these things from me and and never exlplained anything, still today I have not ever heard them say any of the words in this book to me or explain any thing in to me even though I knew bits and peices, I was to embarrassed to ask my friends because i had always played along, I didnt want to feel like an outsider because they thought I knew, and I was to embarrassed to ask my parents!! I love this book and will give it to my little sister when shes old enough!! These are some of the things I have never known the definition of until I read this book: Puberty, period, circumsision (even though are bible teacher talks about it,never told us what it was), tampon (how to use it, how old Ihave to be to use one,Ihave always been afraid to ask,) Ihave always wondered how you can put one in and still pee or can you still pee, now I know!! I am so glad I got this book , I think that parents should give this book to there children as soon as possible so they dont have to go through embarrassment, holding back from asking, and feeling left out, and never finding those missing peices to the puzzle that they have been trying to put together, its there body, they have to experience all these things, they look at these things on there body, and dont know what they are, or what they do, like I have done all these years!! They need this book to find out, if you think some of the pages in the back are to horrible then just copy or scan in some of the book and print of the pages at least so they can know these things , dont RIP OUT PAGES, thats just dumb, they can never be put back like they came out, they will have to be taped and if they pass it down the book will be torn up and ugly and any kid thats gets it in that condition might not even read it!! If your kids are doing things with boys unapropriete and you dont know it and they havent read this because you are keeping it from them because you think it is to disturbing and so called unhelpful, they might not know that they could get a deadly disease, or something they might need to know that might affect them when they grow up and TRY or CANT have your grandchildren because there was something in here that could have helped them, like I saidbefore if you dont want them to have the shole book or some sectiond scan it in, print it off,m copy it, buy the ebook , so you can print it off, or if your brave enough and they dont feel embarrassed read it to them, but give them the info on stds and the important stuff so they know!! If you have comments oon my review please dont hesitate to email me at monkey64224@yahoo.com !! If you have taken your time to read this I want to thank you sooo much!! I hope it has done some good in someone!!
Thanks,
Kristin

The true survival guide for teens.......2006-08-28
I read this book when I was 12-13, it was published in one of the Russian teen magazines. Honestly! I don`t know if I could survive at some points of my teenage years without it.GREAT thanks to Dee Snider! My oldest boy just starts his difficult years and I will get him this book at all costs. It`s a bit pricey here, and very difficult to find. I wonder if it ever was re-edited. If not - it should.Actually, I think they HAVE to include this book in school program. It would save us parents so much trouble!
God Bless My Mother.......2005-08-24
My mother gave me this book when I turned 12. I would not have made it through the next 6 years without it.
Every teenager should have this book!!.......2003-07-27
This book is the greatest book ever written for teenagers. Any teenager, no matter how popular or how outcast could get a lot out of this book. Dee Snider did a terrific job with his light hearted humor and his very true insights. Any teenager will be amazed at how much they can relate to this book. Dee also does an excellent job of helping the reader with such things as making friends, becoming less shy...etc. If you can, I would highly recommend buying this book, you could read it over and over.
Forget Twisted Sister...Forget Strangeland..........2002-04-16
This is Dee Snider at his finest. I agree with the other viewer who said that this book should have been handed out in junior highs. I wish I'd had this book when I was a kid, it would've helped me through the rough spots. I picked this up at [a thrift store] for $.10 simply based on the sheer fact of the ridiculousness of the cover, but the actual text inside is fantastic.
Two thumbs up, Dee Snider, you are a god amongst men.
The book your parents should have given you in Jr High........1997-05-06
My grandmother gave me this book for Christmas when I was 14 (I'm 23 now). The book is funny, honest, informative, and extremely well researched. Although some statistics may be out of date, the basic information is still true.
The book provides information, resources, personal anecdotes, and jokes about hard-to-talk-about-with-your-parents issues like sex, drugs, masturbation, dating, suicide, school problems, family problems, peer pressure, and self esteem. And it's pretty gosh darn funny.
I would feel comfortable giving this book to a 13 year old. After all, my Irish Catholic Grandmother gave me this book

Yo Little Brother.......2007-03-31
Excellent book to teach a young man the right to passage in this world.
Very informative and timely for today's young men.......2007-01-09
This book is very ensightful and full of good advice for our young african american brothers. I found it to be extremely eye opening for my 17 year old, who is about to embark on the real world upon graduation. This book is a vehicle to use for a reality check. As parents we can tell our children things and they feel we are just being parents or over protective, but to see it in writing from older men is confirmation. This book is a great gift to any young man especially if he is about to leave home for the first time.
WOW, this book is good...and I'm not Black!.......2003-12-07
I bought this book to be passed around the Adolescent crisis center where I work. It's an INSTANT hit, with guys even coming up to me to remark, "this book is cool!" It's easy-to-read, with large text and each page dedicated to a single idea. The advice is honorable and the writing style is classy. The authors aren't shy about any subject, and they give advice to young men that is genuinely significant. It takes its readers seriously, doesn't "preach" or come off like a scold-in-disguise. Now to find a corresponding book for females...
A great read if you want to help your adolescent son grow........1999-11-06
I purchased the book for my adolescent son to read. My hope was that he might find some helpful hints on how to deal with his everyday life situations. What I found was an opportunity to communicate with him in a way that had here-to-fore been impossible. We began to really talk to each other about life and death, about different situations he would face in the world, in this country, in the neighborhood and in the home. We talked about how his responses to them would determine the kind of man he would become, the kind of life he would live. The book poses many real life situations that young Black men are faced with. It shows them the right answer to them, the right way to go. The authors must have drawn from many of their own experiences - the examples are on the money! I would strongly urge any parent, White or Black, who has an adolescent male in the house to buy this book and read it together.

practical, timely advice.......2007-01-12
There are some things my 13 year old daughter is uncomfortable with discussing.... this helps break the ice and gives she and I, lots of food for thought
How to understand teen highs, lows, and problems in life.......2001-09-18
This new edition of a classic tells teens how to understand their highs, lows, and problems in life, from parents to peers. The new and expanded 6th edition provides a how-to and why-to which provides a sympathetic overview of growing into an adult's body and world. Teenage Survival Manual includes sections for notes, which may not make this appropriate for library lending, but parents and teens alike will relish its wisdom.
To the point.......2001-07-03
As a parent I appreciated the Reality I and II labels given. The writer conveys his message in not only a teeage friendly manner, but effective for this adult reader. He doesn't become preachy but his stance is well put.
I encourage anyone who struggles with "life" to sit down with this book. It has already helped my relationship with my 18 year old.
As a teacher of preteens I am appreciative of the insight Coombs gives.

This book is totally heart wrenching, and i cried for ages over some of the sad parts, such as when her father forgets her name and date of birth, and when her pet duck, PLT ( Precious Little Treasure), is killed by the dog, Jackie. Chinese Cindrella is so beautifully written that i really felt Adeline's sorrows as if i was in her place. You must read it!

The Teenage Girl's Survival Guide: A Must Read.......2005-10-28
Yvonne Collins & Sandy Rideout
Totally Me
The book was basically a teenage girl's survival guide, because it provides you with a variety of different sections on life as a teenage girl. It has sections on boys, and how to deal with them, how to flirt, how to deal with your best friend when she's having problems, and how to deal with your own problems. Teenagers have a lot of stress and things to go through, and this book shows you that even though you may think something is the end of the world right now, it may not be. Sometimes you need to take a step back from your situation, and look at it from someone else's point of view. If that doesn't help, call up the girl's and throw a slumber party, to get your mind off of whatever you're worrying about.
I think that mostly teenage girls everywhere would enjoy this book, because there are so many things you can relate to. There are quizzes for you to take to see if the guy you like likes you, to see if you've been a great friend, to test your flirting IQ, and to see if you know when to ask your parents for something and have the highest result of them actually giving it to you. It has a lot of humor that makes you laugh out loud. I know that when I was reading it, there wasn't ever a time I wasn't hysterical.
I would definitely recommend this book to every single teenage girl. It's got so much helpful information, and it reminds you that life's curveballs are what makes life interesting. It keeps you thinking not to sweat the small stuff, and to actually get up the courage to talk to the guy of your dreams. It was really an all around great read.
okay, but not the best........2005-05-11
After reading it, I didn't feel that I really related to it..it focused to much on the typical girl teen-and most girls arn't typical by someone else's standards. These kinds of books are supposed to encourage being yourself- but the vibe i got from this book was rather the opposite.
Not the best choice..........2004-04-15
After reading reviews about this, I thought this book was going to be very good. But after getting it home, I learned it had nothing in it I actually didn't know. It seems like something a 9 year old would read. It had totally corny stories to support things and anything in the book could have been told to me in a more mature way in any of the magazines(...). I'm a freshman in high school and I wouldn't recommend this to anyone over the age of 10. Look elsewhere!
This book...........2001-07-14
This book was great I havent finished it yet but I love it! I hope the authors decide to write another book. At first I wasnt sure if I wanted to get the book but as I flipped through it I thought it looked good so I got! I think I made a good decision and I think that all girls that are turning 12 or 13 or 14 or hoigher should get the book because we have alot of questions to embarrassing to say out loud and this book answered all of them! Guys wouldnt understand this book though but girls 12 and up would so I think you should get it!
Keeping Communication Lines Open...........2001-02-22
My soon to be 13 year old daughter really enjoyed this book, particularly the quizzes and the sections on parents, friends, boys, etc... simply the whole book! The book has sparked many interesting and healthy discussions between us. It would have been great to have had a resource like this when I was her age.
In my opinion, any book that gets a teen talking to a parent is good news! I highly recommend it as a worthwhile addition to any home library.
