Less time, more demands, jealous siblings, displaced spouses, bigger bills, and bigger automobiles: given all these cons, why on earth would any sane couple consider having more than one child? Author Joan Leonard deals readers a rather loaded deck of cards as she succinctly describes the joys--but mostly the burdens--of "welcoming" a second child to the family. Despite its sweet title, this little book takes a rather acrid look at the unique challenges second-time moms and dads encounter. Luckily for the reader, Leonard presents plenty of advice from pediatricians, gynecologists, family therapists, and parents who have been through it themselves. Topics cover changes couples face during pregnancy, birth, and all of baby number two's first year.
A confessed firstborn herself, Leonard openly admits she did not enjoy being knocked off her proverbial pedestal when "The Other One," her own baby sister, arrived. Perhaps that's why this former contributing editor to Parent's Magazine and author of Tales from Toddler Hell seems to take such glee in reporting the many stresses and strains caused by adding to the family. Don't expect any gloppy, saccharin-tainted anecdotes from Leonard's contributing parents, either. Their "Tips from the Trenches" offer important food for thought about maternity leave and treating your spouse as a mate rather than as a business partner. Some of Leonard's own advice about appeasing the oldest child--like asking if the newborn can wear his or her outgrown clothes rather than just making it happen--lean a little too far toward spoiling. Most helpful are Leonard's chapters on assessing the first labor and delivery and taking steps to ensure a better one the second time around and her final chapter on effective family management. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
Just when you thought you were finally adjusting to being a parent-your stretch marks have faded and you've packed away your nursing bras and maternity clothes-you decide to have a second child. And although you may feel like a parenting expert, the second time around brings its own set of questions, quandaries, and chaos, from tighter finances to new routines. Drawing on the expertise of pediatricians, gynecologists, and family therapists, as well as the anecdotes of mothers everywhere, Twice Blessed covers how to prepare yourself for a different pregnancy and birth, your marriage for another dramatic change, and your child for a new brother or sister. With warmth, inspiration, and humor, Leonard carefully examines the brand new family of four and what to expect as it evolves during the first weeks, the first months, and finally that first year.AUTHORBIO: Joan Leonard is a former contributing editor of Parents magazine and the author of What to Do to Improve Your Child's Manners and Tales from Toddler Hell. Her articles have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers including Good Housekeeping, Woman's Day, Glamour, Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, Parenting, Child, and The New York Times. She lives in Northport, New York, with her husband and two children.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-09-15
I bought this book in eager (happy!) anticipation of my second child. However, after only reading the first 7 pages of the book, I stopped. The Author seemed to hyper-focus on all of the negative aspects of being pregnant and took the attitude "why would anyone ever do this again!" I find that pretty silly and immature. You're a Mom. Being a Mom is tough. Get over it, honey.
I wanted a book that talked about some serious differences between my first and second pregnancy - not a book that talked me INTO having the second one. I'm already pregnant... and HAPPY about it!
If you were one of those women who complained about every aspect of being pregnant and then complained about every aspect of being a new Mom, this book is for you! You will be in good company. If you are a strong woman who is confident in your mothering skills and family planning choices, you will find this book negative, trite and immature.
Easy read.......2007-08-19
This is a great book that is easy to read. It helps you get ready for the new little one!
A bit disappointing.......2007-03-08
As I was reading this, I kept waiting for the part where I was going to feel better about having a second child. Instead, I was laid in bed with eyes wide open. It seemed to be all truthful, but I was looking to set my mind at ease and it never happen.
Realistic view, good coverage, I feel much more prepared now.......2006-08-25
I read the other reviews before purchasing the book and was drawn more to it because of the great difference in opinions, either hating or loving the book. I think the book is very good and provides a realistic, balanced view. Instead of being more anxious, negative or even regretful after reading it, I felt calm and more prepared.
Good coverage and worth reading several times. I'd highly recommend it.
Review.......2006-07-27
some very useful hints for older child when bringing baby home. most of it is common sense, but there are some good ideas i am using. Some of the anecdotes are comical.
Note, the content is almost identical to "And Baby Makes Four".
Customer Reviews:
Don't Read if over 40!.......2007-10-14
After seeing all the 5 star ratings for this book, I did my best to find some redeeming value in this diatribe. I felt that I was constantly slapped in the face with the authors views that wanting to have a baby over the age of 40 was selfish and unfair to the child. I'd like to inform the narrow minded authors that at age 40 I'm a much better parent than I would ever have been in my 20's and 30's. I have just as much energy and a lot more patience! Not to mention that my parents at 65 are no where near the geriatric burdens that the authors predict for my children in the future. Parenting is challenging at any age, and to assume that someone under the age of 40 is any more prepared for the task is absurd. I want my money back!
A well needed book!.......2007-09-21
Finally ~ A book for people deciding about egg donor. When I went through egg donor 5 years ago, there was VERY LITTLE info available, so this is wonderful to finally have a resource. Also, a woman commented on who in their 30's need egg donors. Actually, I was in my 20's and needed an egg donor. Many women have POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and cannot have their own children, so this is the next best option.
good info, bad editing.......2007-05-16
This book contains some useful information but is so full of typographical and grammatical errors that I could not finish it. In some portions, there is at least one typographical, spelling, or grammatical error on every page; sometimes there are multiple errors on a single page. I find it difficult to believe that the publisher allowed it to go to print in this form. That said, the book did stimulate my thinking on various issues related to the decision whether to undergo IVF with egg donation. If you can get past the bad editing, then it is worth perusing.
Having Your Baby Through Egg Donation.......2007-05-15
This is by far the best book written on considering having a child through donated ovum. It was informative and interesting. I liked the fact that the authors are pro disclosure regarding telling the child and that they delineate what the donor should know about the child as well. The authors do not use a lot of medical lexicon but they still remain infromative about the process.
Conflicted.......2007-05-04
I was excited to find a book that addressed my issues of infertility exactly, but this book made me feel that even those in the "infertility family" did not approve of my decision. There is a tremendous amount of information and the book covered every possibility of reaching the egg donation decision. However, the authors were not supportive of mothers considering egg donation if they were over 45 years old and repeated that lack of support throughout the book.
The beginning of the book has a section discussing seemingly all ways of arriving at the decision of egg donation and they were positive about all of them except women who need both a donated egg and donated sperm, which happens to be my situation. The authors dismissed this option as "unfair to the child" and barely discussed it in the rest of the book.
I would recommend this book for a good overview of the emotional ups and downs, but take it with a grain of salt if you are older or are not lucky enough to have family to donate for you.

The Doula Advantage
Your Complete Guide to Having an Empowered and Positive Birth with the Help of a Professional Childbirth Assistant
by Rachel Gurevich
Take Control of Your Childbirth Experience
New moms are spreading the word to pregnant women just like you: Doulas make pregnancy and childbirth the celebratory experience it is meant to be! Doulas are professionally trained women who provide support before, during, and after delivery. Research has shown that doulas help women have positive birth experiences, decrease the need for pain medication, improve breastfeeding success, and reduce the need for cesarean sections and other invasive procedures. Author Rachel Gurevich interviewed more than 235 women and birth professionals to bring you this best-kept pregnancy secret. Inside, you'll find real mothers' stories and discover how doulas make a joyful difference in childbirth. You'll learn:
·The many ways doulas provide labor support, whether you plan a "natural" or medicated birth
·How to find, hire, and choose the right doula
·How specialized doulas can help you before or after the baby's birth
·How doulas help the dad-to-be
·And more!
Foreword by Mayer Eisenstein, M.D., medical director, Homefirst Health Services
Praise for The Doula Advantage :
"Doulas really do make a difference in having a safe and satisfying birth, as you will learn in this book."
— William Sears, M.D., coauthor, The Baby Book
"Comprehensive, thought-provoking, and highly moving. . . . A must read for any woman thinking of using the services of a doula."
— Ann Douglas, author, The Mother of All Pregnancy Books and The Mother of All Baby Books
Customer Reviews:
Doula Advantage - a balanced view.......2007-02-17
This book was informative and easy to use (you do not need to read it cover to cover, only the sections that apply to you). It comes with good questions for interviewing Doulas for prenatal, labor, or post-natal care. It is not preachy or overly anti-medical establishment, so it comes across in a caring, unbiased manner. It helped me explain to my husband how a Doula could benefit him as well as me during labor, for which he was relieved and grateful! It also gave me some statistics (about shorter labors, less intervention, etc.) to support my decision and justify the out-of-pocket expense of a Doula.
Huntsville, AL doula review on birthing assistants books.......2006-08-27
After reading this book, I feel fortunate to count myself amongst such a compassionate array of ladies who call themselves doulas. The author, Rachel Gurevich, (who also wrote the Fab Job EBook on How to Become a Doula) puts a very personal experience out there for all to see and includes many studies and testimonials from real women who have had doulas by their side. She covers every aspect about doulas and their services and even a chapter on "Hiring a Labor Doula" for those who don't know where to start. There are even forms that can be photocopied in the Appendix such as an Interview Guide and Third Party Reimbursement, as well as Organizational Contact Information. If I had to choose only one book about doulas, it would be this one. Why? Because it is personal, has an abundance of practical information and it calls me (a doula) a "special woman". The last chapter is devoted to how to become one of these special women who count ourselves privileged to serve others.
So much better than The Doula Book!.......2005-08-02
This is the best book about doulas I've ever read. It is much and much better than The Doula Book and as far as I'm concerned this book should be required reading for doula certification in stead of the Doula Book. Also for people who want to know what a doula is and does, this book is the best by far. I highly recommend it for everybody who works with pregnant women and women in labor, as well as expectant parents. The book is very easy to read and is written in clear language.
Thinking of hiring a doula?.......2004-01-08
You need this book. The author does a terrific job of pointing out the medical and psychological benefits of doula care and otherwise making the case for doulas. The book also contains leads on other great doula resources, so it doubles as a doula sourcebook. Excellent reading.
Excellent book to answer all your doula questions!.......2003-12-04
I am a childbirth educator and Hypno-doula trainer, and am asked so many times about the benefits of hiring a doula, how to contact them and what to ask to make sure it's a good fit. This book explains it all and more, and I appreciate having it for my lending library. All pregnant women should consider obtaining it since anyone having a hospital birth needs a doula! Childbirth eductors should also get it for their students and encourage them to be informed of all of their birthing choices.

Enjoyable information.......2007-01-03
This book helped me as an African-American women see things from someone who could defintely understand me. I enjoyed reading through this guide. It enabled me to ask questions regarding my health that I may not have asked normally. I would say this is a wonderful book to have in your library as you go through your pregnancy.
Having Your Baby.......2006-03-07
Wow!!! This book is great for the African-American woman. Rarely can you find a book that meets our needs, but this met the mark. I find this to be an easy read, and will probably read it more than once throughout my pregnancy experience. It has eased my mind about some of the myths and requirements of having a healthy pregnancy. Way to go Dr. Hutcherson!!!!
Better than expected!.......2005-10-16
This book is better than other books I've read marketed towards Black mothers-to-be. It is very well organized, and addresses questions that you didn't even know to ask. I wish I would have had this book the first time around' its definitely a great help with baby number two.
EXCELLENT.......2002-03-26
For first time mothers, this book gave me what I needed. You will find everything you need in this book. I really enjoyed reading every page, and it has been passed along to other sisters out there who are having a baby. ONCE AGAIN EXCELLENT.
Essential for 1st Pregnancy.......2001-11-26
This book was given to me by a good friend, and it is the best thing she could have given to me. I found the book to be very informative and answered ALL questions I could ever ask about being pregnant. I even found myself referring back to the book with my second child, pregnant again about a year and a half later. I am here today writing this review, because I want to email this page to my cousin who is now pregnant. I promised her I would find it online and told her to make sure she purchase and read this book....Excellent

Customer Reviews:
Some issues..........2007-09-08
I wasn't thrilled with this book. I found it a little didactic (albeit in an overly breezy style)--not the book for people who aren't sure about natural birth; it'll make middle-of-the-road moms feel inadequate.
The style is blog-like and too personal to the author at times for an instructive book, in my opinion. The section that's nothing more than quoted emails is interesting for a couple of pages, then becomes overkill; I felt like I was reading a message board.
I noted numerous typographical errors (including a major one in statistics that was corrected with an errata sticker), which detracted from the professionalism of the book.
The section on Cytotec is excellent, with an appropriately firm stance, and the facts and documents to back that up.
Be sure to buy a "new" version of this book from Square One.......2006-12-14
Please be aware that this book is now published by Square One Publishers and has been since earlier this year. To get brand-new copies of this book, you need to go to the "other" product page for the book HEY! WHO'S HAVING THIS BABY ANYWAY? as listed on this website. It doesn't presently have the "Search Inside the Book" feature at that product page, but the book is immediately available to be ordered over at that other product page. So to paraphrase Dylan (a.k.a. Zimmerman), "This ain't the book you want, babe / Go to the other page." Now go have those babies over at the "other" product page . . .
Great Preparing For The Birth YOU want!.......2006-06-14
I have the pleasure of teaching this course to my clients during their childbirth education class, all are finding this book to be a very easy read with clear to the point FACTUAL information! This is a must have and every one of my Doula clients get it for FREE and must read it by their 37th week of pregnancy!
Thank You Breck Hawk!.......2005-11-01
I had the pleasure of attending one of Ms. Hawk's workshops recently and found it so informative. The information in this book is not new - it's just written in a way that the layperson can understand. Ina May Gaskin and Henci Goer have lots of great information about the unfortunate state of childbirth in the US, but Breck Hawk has "broken it down" for the average expectant mom without condescending. I highly recommend it!
One of the BEST books ever written for pregnant women!!.......2005-10-31
As both a childbirth educator and a labor doula, I find this book has great (and accurate) information, with worksheets that are perfect for discovering what you want as a pregnant woman, good research to help backup all the claims, PLUS it's written by a midwife! I could go on and on, so just put away that copy of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and get this one instead! Inform yourself and respect your baby!

VERY helpful.......2007-08-27
This book was great for us because it provided advice on many aspects of pregnancy. Rather than just talk about the physical aspects of pregnancy Weiss describes emotional aspects as well. I especially liked the section on choosing a childbirth class, as my husband and I were overwhelmed with the possibilities available to us. This is a great book for anyone who is pregnant or wanting to be pregnant.

I loved that Robin includes her personal voice and perspective in this pregnancy and birth guide! It's a welcome change from all the objective, sterile drivel that passes for pregnancy/birth manuals. She also has a way of making you feel like birth is safe, natural and normal. It's like having your own personal doula and birth educator right in your own home! Thanks, Robin!

Best Birthing Book I've Found!.......2001-02-08
I was seeking as natural a childbirth as possible that also covered possible medical complications. This book maintains a positive focus on the natural while also being realistic about potential problems and non-natural necessities. Gill encourages a healthy attitude toward birth that is not unrealistic. It is the most beautiful, positive book I've found and I wouldn't trade it in for the world!
Customer Reviews:
It's NOT What You Do but HOW You Do It!!.......2004-05-05
Nothing in life is perfect and nothing we do ever matters, from conceing out children in the most natural and "normal" of ways to using any sort of infertility assistance-- what truly matters in the end is the WHYs and the HOWs of everything we do.
This is an ugly, embittered, and even mean-spirited book and I'd advice anyone very much in lvoe with a partner, male or female, who is infertile, to NOT read this book: it'll ake your already fearful feelings worse, and for no logical reason.
In a perfect world, we'd all be able to conceive at the drop of a hat. But the world is not perfect and neither is nature, yet does not make our lives any more beautiful and worthwhile.
If you love someone fiercely and they, for not fault of their own, cannot conceive but you still want to create a family together, then do everything in your power to form a family-- by sperm, egg, embryo donations or adoption.
In the end, it''ll make little difference-- for yourself, your partner, or your offspring.
Because what truly matters is love, genuine love.
Your children will feel the love between you, before and after they've been brought into the world and within your family. That lvoe will make them secure forever, regardless of how they arrived at your doorstep.
Terrible INSENSITIVE HORRIBLE book.......2003-10-28
This is a terrible book. It refers to children by DI as "illegitimate" and compares donor insemination to adultery. Its a terrible book and I don't recommend it to anyone.
A GREAT WHAT HAPPENED NEXT BOOK.......2000-06-26
How did Elizabeth Noble conceive with a sperm donor she knew but without having sex with him? How did her family feel about it? This is an thought provoking book which not only tells Noble's story but has an interesting chapter on donor offspring and their reactions at learning as adults that they have biological fathers who are not the fathers they grew up with. While this is a good book I would also recommend to anyone planning to by this book to also buy Helping the Stork: The Choices and Challenges of Donor Insemination by Vercollone. Vercollone's book helps you discuss DI with your donor offspring so they don't become bitter...which was Noble's experience.
