Book Description
This lavish, illustrated journal describes Beatrix Potter's life as a young woman in Victorian England as she struggles to achieve independence and to find artistic success and romantic love. Using witty, observant commentary taken from Beatrix's own diaries, the journal features a wealth of watercolor paintings, sketches, photographs, letters and period memorabilia to recreate the world in which she lived.

Worth Reading Over and Over!.......2007-10-07
This is a journal, most of which was begun by Beatrix Potter herself at the age of sixteen. It is drawn from facts found in a number of places, in some areas and in certain ways. She didn't specifically "create" this giant, luxurious book, but the fact is, the story is essentially her real story. Her life was just beginning to change at sixteen, right at the point that this wonderful, illustrated chronicle of her dreams, hopes and experiences demonstrates. The book is enhanced by many drawings, her script on the pages, and also by charming additions such as letters in envelopes stuck to the thick oversized pages, which the reader can remove and read, just as the original recipient did, and locket facsimiles, and things like that. There are many drawings and watercolor paintings, which she created, of rustic scenes and animals, as well as photographs of her family, the houses they lived in, and her loved ones.
Beatrix Potter was a strong-willed woman (though shy), as well as a great artist. She spent her life anthropomorphizing animals in her tales, in the sense that they had clothing and characteristics which were human, but she seriously studied real animals devotedly, and she was true to their reality in her books. I think this is one of the reasons her books have been so beloved throughout the years by all children and their families. The realism and the fantasy blend so charmingly no one has ever been able to replicate this.
Beatrix Potter had a great love in her life: her publisher. Sadly, she was never to marry him. However, she did eventually marry a wonderful man at a later age. She had bought several farms and always remained in the country, living in its beloved natural beauty which encouraged the legacy which has affected all of us, the legacy which began with her first little book: Peter Rabbit.
I cannot recommend this book enough. It is beautifully done, not "kitchy" or fake in in its layout. This is such a moving story of a great, strong-willed woman.
Beatrix Potter has been beloved for her books and her tales for a hundred years. I am quite sure she will continue to be loved for many, many more. Cherish this book.
Perfect gift for young & old.......2007-09-19
My three year old loves to open all of the flaps and envelopes in this beautiful book & look at the pictures, while my mom & I have enjoyed reading it. Anyone who is a fan of Beatrix Potter, or just anything fanciful will enjoy this. There is also a wonderful suprise in the back cover.
Beautifully Done!.......2007-09-11
This book was beautifully done. Shows wonderful drawings, letters and pictures of Beatrix, her life and family. This is a wonderful book for any Beatrix Potter fan. Hope you all enjoy yours as well.
A beautiful and interesting book.......2007-08-03
This is possibly one of the most beautiful books that I have seen. In addition it is extremely interesting as you can better understand Beatrix Potter through seeing the reproductions of her notes and letters as well as reproductions of some of her art. It is a great addition to the movie "Miss Potter." The Journal is a great element to add to the movie. They go very well together. I have put this book out on the coffee table and within a period of just a few weeks had many compliments on it even by some of my more jaded friends.
Delightful Journal.......2007-05-15
Charming journal utilizing Miss Potter's journals and letters as sources. A unique book that appeals to me as a writer, and as a total fan of her stories and illustrations. My mother read Beatrix Pottter's books to me over and over, because I would rather hear them again than hear new ones. I used to pore over the illustrations.
The movie Miss Potter is a work of art, and most of us in the audience sat mesmerized at the end, absorbing the heartwarming film. And I spoke to the stranger next to me as I left the theater, and told her to go to the bookstore and find this book. It is wonderful. I plan to give it as a gift to my grandchildren as well.

Gilly Hopkins is a determined-to-be-unpleasant 11-year-old foster kid who the reader can't help but like by the end. Gilly has been in the foster system all her life, and she dreams of getting back to her (as she imagines) wonderful mother. (The mother makes these longings worse by writing the occasional letter.) Gilly is all the more determined to leave after she's placed in a new foster home with a "gross guardian and a freaky kid." But she soon learns about illusions--the hard way. This Newbery Honor Book manages to treat a somewhat grim, and definitely grown-up theme with love and humor, making it a terrific read for a young reader who's ready to learn that "happy" and "ending" don't always go together. (Ages 9 to 12) --Richard Farr
Book Description
Eleven-year-old Gilly has been stuck in more foster families than she can remember, and she's disliked them all. She has a county-wide reputation for being brash, brilliant, and completely unmanageable. So when she's sent to live with the Trotters -- by far the strangest family yet -- Gilly decides to put her sharp mind to work. Before long she's devised an elaborate scheme to get her real mother to come rescue her.
But the rescue doesn't work out, and the great Gilly Hopkins is left thinking that maybe life with the Trotters wasn't so bad ...

Sometimes it doesnt turn out to be what we want..............2007-03-25
....thats why I like this book. Everything we do isn't always happily ever after sometimes its just BLAH. You get pulled into this book and its hard to put it down. Even though its for young readers I still enjoy this book to this day. I remember my first time reading it and I still had a problem with having to stop.... must finish reading it. Katherine Paterson is a good author. Next stop Bridge to Terabithia.......*grin* Great Book!
An adult review.......2007-02-14
This book follows Gilly a foster child as she gorws up. Through her feeling of hate toward her foster mother and brother to her angst at school. Gilly learns that no matter how much anger, discomfort, and hardships you put people through the ones who really love you aren't going to stop because you did something bad.
The Great Gilly Hopkins.......2007-01-29
The book I read was called The Great Gilly Hopkins. It was written by Katherine Paterson. I would give this book a 4 in star rating. In this book the main character is Gadriel Hopkins, but people call her Gilly. I gave this book a 4 because it is basically all about giving people a chance and that they can change wants you give them that chance. He Great Gilly Hopkins is about a foster child named Gilly. She has been moving around a lot and she really doesnt like it. One day she moves to a house with a lady named Maime Trotter and her son Willam Earnest. She hates it at first and she wants to try to get out of there and try to get to California and move in with her mom. After a while of living with Maime Trotter she starts to really like it and have some fun. Then when she really doesnt want to move anymore her grandma comes and wants Gilly to come and live with her. Gilly is forced to move again. when she gets to her grandmas she hates it, but just like at Maime Trotter she gave it a chance and then she likes it. Something big happens next, but Im not going to say anymore. I guess you'll just have to read it yourself. I recommend you to read this book, Jacob have I loved, and The upstairs room. The are all very good books. I love to play basketball.
The Great Great Gilly Hopkins.......2006-12-21
Gilly is a foster child who moves from home to home. She's tough, loud, and hard to work with. She has a very strong personality. She'll scare you if you just look into her eyes. Gilly always wanted to see her mother. The book starts with Gilly going to a new home. There is Trotter, William Ernest, and Mr. Randolph. She's not so sure about her new home. She only wants to be with Courtney. (her mother)
The moral of the story is being loved by a family, not being independent. This is a heartwarming story about a girl, Gilly, who is first independent, then was part of a family.
This is a great story. I think it's great because I like Gilly's character. She's fun and tough at the same time. So if you like realistic fiction with toughness and silliness, you'll like this book!
the best of the "baddest".......2006-12-01
"Is there a book this good?" They would ask me. I don't think so! It is about a girl who has been to three different homes less than three years. Her name is Gilly, in this book she has to tendency to act as if she was the big bad wolf, Gilly notices that once she finally meets someone she really likes she has to go away, if only she was the smartest girl in the world she could stay in one place. Gilly has now met the best family ever and don't know what to do! So,read the book and find out what would be the right thing for her to accomplish. There is also neat stuff for you to read in this book, like Gilly entering a Kentucky derby, and the worlds uncombed hair. now, like i said just read the book and you could tell your friends about this amazing book.......

In April I sent my daughter to a day-long activity at a local college, where Kerry Madden led a writing workshop for girls. I imagine many of the exercises came from WRITING SMARTS. My daughter enjoyed Ms. Madden's class and now can't put her pen or pencil down. She's always writing something for me to read or look at. We now own the book. I think my daughter is on her way to becoming a writer because of Ms. Madden's book and the workshop. This book is a must have if you have a daughter and want to boost her creativity and voice.

loved it.......2007-10-11
I read it first, and I am looking forward to reading it again with my granddaughter.
Very good. .......2007-03-26
I think this is a great book for young girls. I wish there had been something like this when I was this age. As a mother to an 8 year old I found all these clever hints and tips to be great help. My only complaint with American Girl is that they never feature special needs or disabled children. My daughter has Down syndrome and it would be great to see the American Girl company actually include these children in their population of American Girls.
The book is bright, colorful and easy to read. There are lots of checklists and creative ideas to help girls feel better about themselves. These are also things that parents can start doing with their younger girls. I think the target is the tweens... 10-13 year olds, but I believe that younger girls can benefit a lot from this.
Great Series of Books.......2007-01-19
Good book bought it for my daughter she really enjoyed reading it. A+++++++++
Real Beauty / American Girl.......2007-01-12
Great book for the pre-teen or early teens. Good to promote high self esteem.

As with all the American Girl self improvement/self esteem books this book is great. My 10 year old daughter loves all the American Girl Books. It's nice to have some well written and common sense books for young girls to help them with the transition to adolescence.

BOOKS FOR GIRLS! So Lame Your Brothers Won't Steal Them!!!.......2007-09-23
""My old mother used to say that every little girl should be able to cook, play the piano, sing, and shoot."" So declares dastardly Mr. Grimshaw to orphan Sylvia Green in Joan Aiken's 1960 children's novel THE WOLVES OF WILLOUGHBY CHASE. The meek Sylvia "thought of Aunt Jane's very different catalogue of accomplishments for little girls, in which crewel work, purse netting, and making paper doilies took high place, and could not agree with him."
Like Old Mrs. Grimshaw and Aunt Jane, we all have our own opinions. To give a small idea of what editor Kathleen Odean's values were when compiling GREAT BOOKS FOR GIRLS, I will discuss two books, one she excludes, and one she recommends.
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES by L.M. Montgomery is a famous novel set at the turn of the century on Canada's Prince Edward Island. Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew decide to adopt a boy to help the aging Matthew with the farm work, but get Anne instead. Marilla declares that they must send her back; "What use can she be to us?" "We might be some use to her," is Matthew's reply. Anne's history - of being farmed out as child-care labor to abusive women with drunken husbands - makes Marilla relent. She agrees to keep the girl she has "no use" for and give her a "proper bringing up". Anne proves brilliant as a scholar, and while many parents keep their own children tied to the house or farm, the Cuthberts support Anne's academic ambitions -- despite neighborly criticism.
In the end, Anne earns a full university scholarship, but due to a family crisis postpones her education to work as a schoolteacher. Odeon excludes GREEN GABLES because Anne "sacrifices herself for others" which makes the book's message "a very traditional one". But the whole point of closing the book on Anne's "sacrifice" is to emphasize the importance of female education. Anne's teaching degree is proved VALUABLE, which validates Marilla's decision to allow Anne to pursue extra schooling. The ending re-iterates the underlying theme of human worth transcending utilitarian considerations, by rewarding Marilla's uncalculating kindness to a "useless" child. It's moving, dammit!!!
But apparently we are supposed to trample human beings we can't make use of. Which is why Odean DOES include an amusingly awful excuse for sci-fi called THE GIRL WHO OWNED A CITY! In a post-Apocalyptic future, everyone over twelve has mysteriously died, and the "heroine" Lisa decrees that everything from the public school to a nearby warehouse of food is hers and hers alone. This gives her dictatorial power over any child that wants to live at the school and/or eat, so no one can stop her when she makes five-year-olds earn their keep at "her" school by patrolling the walls with GUNS to shoot other children trying to take "her" stuff. Odean recommends CITY on account of Lisa's "unusually strong leadership skills," although Lisa actually doesn't have any, just absurdly meek followers too dumb to realize that a school is public property.
Well, you get the idea. It is as if Odean made her choices by speed-reading with a checklist, and ignoring moral context as well as literary quality. Many reviewers complain that Ideology is put before Quality, but that is only half the problem, as many books seem no more feminist or "pro-girl" than they are "great". CITY is not the only recommendation that undermines democratic and humanistic values just because the heroine shows some illusion of strength. Another problem is that Odean's choices and comments seem to indicate a certain borderline misogyny. For example, she praises one picture book because it shows a girl climbing the rigging of a ship - but regretfully whines that it also shows her CURLING HER HAIR while perched on top of said rigging.
Be aware that Odean's Puritanism deserts her when it comes to sex. In recommended books: A sixteen-year-old "squire" has a sexual fling with her crown prince; An adult wizard's unhealthy possessiveness towards his female student is revealed to be "love" the instant she turns sixteen; The hostile sexual aggression of a "troubled" boy proves a successful means of courting the heroine. Unlike perilous and destructive behavior such as HAIR CURLING, or WORKING BEFORE COLLEGE, such issues are not considered important enough to mention in the annotations. Nor does Odean discuss her views/guidelines regarding sexuality in the introduction.
There are naturally some very excellent books in this lineup. But you have to read each annotation to find out whether Odeon considers it a great book, an okay book, or a dud with a good message. It would have been so easy just to put a star next to the actual good ones. Another problem is that Odean has little respect for the stories beyond their didactic use. For example, she fails to inform the reader that NIGHTBIRDS ON NANTUCKET is the third in an excellent series, or that HARRIET THE SPY has two sequels.
You will not find standards such as LITTLE WOMEN, THE SECRET GARDEN, A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, HEIDI, NATIONAL VELVET, or the LITTLE HOUSE books. I don't have a particular problem with that. There is something to be said for a non-traditional lineup with aggressive feminist standards as long as one is frank about one's priorities, which Odean is. But in practice Odean's false and shallow notion of feminism robs the approach of its worth. I spent several years browsing through selections, and rather than thinking, "I wish I'd had these books when I was a kid", I ended up grateful that my formative influences were Narnia and STAR WARS, and disgusted with the whole concept of "girl's books" in general.
I don't discourage purchasing it. You just have to know what you are getting. Odean's first priority is making sure the books impart the right messages about being "strong" and "outspoken". Quality is optional, humanism expendable, hair-curling femininity a worse drawback than cruelty, and sacrificing for others worse than exploiting them. It might be best for those who are already well read and are looking for out-of-the-way titles. But if you are only going to get only ONE book of this sort, I'd look elsewhere. ONCE UPON A HEROINE puts a conscious emphasis on quality over didactics, reproduces most of the best recommendations from Odean, and is a fun read in itself.
Worth it.......2007-09-02
Great book to bring to the library so you come home with good books to read.
Politically correct books, not good books........2007-06-11
I was looking for help selecting books for my granddaughter. However, in reading the introduction I found that the author has not included "Anne Of Green Gables", an absolutely fantastic book, because "...at the end of the book, she (Anne) consciously sacrifices her education to help her beloved relative." This makes Anne somehow a failure as a woman? Not in my eyes. The author does include "Anne Frank: The Diary Of A Young Girl" so she's not ALWAYS wrong. But it does seem that Ms. Odean doesn't seem to be interested in books that make good reading but only books that make good points (by her feminist definition). Personally, I find a good book keeps me reading; propaganda has me reaching for the TV remote. A book titled "Great Book For Girls" should live up to its name. This one doesn't.
Helpful .......2007-01-18
I have found this book to be a great resource for myself and my daughters. It provides a brief desciption of the books reviewed so as a parent you know what your child is reading about without having to read the whole book yourself, very helpful when your child is an avid reader. While certainly not a complete list of the books available to my daughters to read, it provides a source for books on particular subjects with good role models for girls.
Conflicting - but generally positive.......2003-11-09
A lifelong feminist, I usually have clear feelings about things to do with women and girls. But women/girl - only things are not clear cut. Obviously it would be nice if such things were not necessary, if girls self-esteem was not constantly battled against by society etc.., If Ophelia didn't need saving.
But given reality, offsetting influences are still of use. Even so, reading the entries in this book I found myself wanting to ask sometimes: but is it a *good* book?
Many book descriptions included the reasoning for their inclusion (besides positive role models etc..), but some didn't. Regarding those entries, I wanted to know: Is it well-written? Is it content- and flavor- rich, or is it another feeble attempt at PC? In my opinion, books like that are worthless. I wasn't sure I could assume that Odean shared my sentiments about that.
Perhaps the more recent edition is better for that.
In many ways though, this book is great. The explanations of the books are in-depth, all the useful info is included. There are indexes - very compact ones that take up little space. One of my favorite additional things in this book is the section on parent resources - there are many goodies in this section including a list of 4 magazines that librarians use to know what new books are out. Great for keeping up with all that is going on!
All in all a great effort within a very challenging context!

Extraordinary Book, Recommend for Curriculum.......2006-02-08
Marissa Moss's Dustbowl story is one of the most compelling books I've ever read on the topic. I'm a literate adult, but was shocked at how much I DIDN"T know before I read this book. She packs Depression-era "facts" into a heartbreaking (and ultimately heartwarming) tale of a girl and her family, all rendered especially poignant with charming drawings that accompany the text. The whirling storms of dirt that cover everything with mounds of dirt ("we could tell where it came from by the color: gray dirt from Oklahoma; red dirt from Texas; brown was our own Kansas dirt") are brought to life with the evocative drawings, as well as the well-rounded characters. This book should be read by every child--and adult--in the country, as an essential part of U.S. history. I loved the book, was moved by it, and was sorry when it ended.
girl in a storm.......2004-03-24
This book is about a girl who lives in a house and they live by a farm and all they have are horses and cows and chickens. She is in a big dust storm. They cannot keep anything growing so her mom and dad go out to a dancing contest to see if they can earn money for seeds. They come back without any money. So they join a last man standing club. This club is for people who are having hard times but will not abandon their town. I liked this book because it was based on a true story, and it was from a long time ago. The setting was set in the desert with lots of wind storms and also set during the Great Depression.
The girl that learns agin.......2004-03-24
This book was alsome. It puts me in her place. I can get in to alot of books but this is the book that it gust took a little bit to read it. It might be little but it is good. We could have done alot of other books but i picked this one. I'm all so reading two other books. It is about a girl in the gret depresion she has to clean ever day. She lifes with her mom, dad, and her brother. She and her panters and her friends have to live in the sand storms. My reflection is i would recmond this book to other people that have to do something on the great deppresson. OR if you just want to read it for fun. The story elements are where the story takes place in the dester. the point of fewe is that the worst can happen.
Rose's Journal: The Story of a Girl in the Great Depression.......2003-10-27
I liked it because I really like the Amelia stories (also by Marissa Moss) and learning about the Great Depression. They finally came together!
Moving and informative.......2002-04-17
Rose's Journal is one of Marissa Moss' best books yet. It is both a vivid picture of the Depression era and a moving portrait of an individual child. Rose's relationships with her family, friends, farm animals and land are delicately, poignantly, and even humorously depicted. The narrator's soulful and childlike drawings leaven the serious text; her words are also enhanced visually with real photos of the time and drawings of her brother's comic strips. A humane, creative, refreshing and vivid way to present history to children.

Terrific introduction to Girl Classics.......2000-03-30
This book offers a terrific introduction to a dozen or so classic stories in shortened form. The Wizard of Oz, Heidi, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and others, have been condensed to 10 or so pages, making them ideal for bedtime reading.
My daughter is five and loves the illustrations. There are colorful, unique page boaders for each story. The other illustrations are sparse - one or two per story - but are both vivid and unique in style to each story.
I also appreciate the prose. Perhaps too difficult for young(er) children, however the various authors don't pander to children either in terms of simplified vocabulary or style.
Great character builder too.

Beatrix Potter.......2000-03-28
Beatrix Potter was born on July 28,1866 in London, England. Her parents were Rupert and Helen Potter. She had a brother named Bertram. She was an author and illustrator. Beatrix's real name was Helen Beatrix Potter but people called her Beatrix. She got engaged to her editor named Norman Warne, but before they got married Norman got sick and died. Beatrix was very sad. But then she got married to a man named William Heelis. Her first book was "The Tale of Peter Rabbit". Beatrix died in 1943 at the age of 77. And her children books are still loved by kids all over the world today.I liked this book because since she was an illustrator and author it encourages me to reaad and write more.
This book was really helpful!!.......1999-02-24
I was so fortunate to find this book. I had to find out historical facts about Beatrix Potter because I was doing an author study on her. This book helped me out so much. The illustrations were wonderful. The book told so many facts about her childhood and the things that she liked to do as a child. There were so many things in the book that I did not know about her. I still would not know the information about her, if I had not found this book. I read it out to my class instead of taking notes out of it because it was so wonderful.
