LIfe Saver.......2007-05-14
If you are a court reporting student, you can benefit from this book. I found that this book contained a lot of briefs that was not incorporated in my theory book. This book will help you gain the speed to pass speed test.
Valuable resource!.......2006-11-10
My judge uses all kinds of crazy words, things that people don't usually hear in everyday courtroom proceedings...yet I have found most of them in this book! In my efforts to reduce my overall strokes and improve my realtime, this book has been my sidekick. Not a day goes by that I don't look for some help between its covers. It's awesome!
Great referece book for any court reporter...........2006-05-11
This book will become a staple in my realtime library, love it!
A Court Reporter's Bible!.......2002-12-05
WOW, WOW, WOW!!! I think this book should be required reading for EVERY court reporter. I've been reporting 21 years, have all my certifications, but I'd have to say I feel like I have just now "turned the corner" after incorporating some of these briefs!
Curious? How about MOINGS for "among other things," AEFM for "African-American," and my favorite, the 40+ pages of "is" phrases including STHR-LGS for "Is there anything else."
You'll want to make space in your carrying case so you always have this reference with you!
THE building-block resource for reporters and students........1998-09-06
I can't say enough good things about Laurie's books for court reporters. BRIEF ENCOUNTERS should be on every reporter's and student's reference shelf. This book contains one- and two-stroke briefs and phrases for everyday reporting and is full of ideas which you will want to incorporate into your dictionaries. Some examples:
HOUB = how about HOUBT = how about the HOUBZ = how about these HOUBS = how about those HOUF = how far HOUFT = how fast HOUM = how many HOUFM = how many of them HOUMZ = how many of these HOUMS = how many of those
The consistency of Laurie's outlines makes it very easy to adopt new briefs and streamline your writing. Get it -- you won't be disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic resource for inspiration.......2007-07-23
I'm an English teacher in China, doing both classroom and private small-group teaching. Language learning definitely requires more than the "chalk and talk" approach that Mr. Marsland warns against, and his book is a great resource for avoiding such a bland style of teaching. Language learning should be engaging, and this book offers good inspiration for making it so.
I have to cope with very unsatisfactory teaching materials oriented towards memorization and drills -- not good for achieving fluency. Also, I'm frequently asked to teach last-minute classes with little or no time to prepare. Resources are frequently limited to little more than a chalkboard, if that. It's easy to become frantic and stuck in a pattern of "Oh God, how do I fill this 90 minutes of class time? What do I do?!"
Many thanks to Mr. Marsland for giving this concise, well-organized and thoughtful book. It's like a splash of cold water in my face when I make my own job more complicated than it has to be. /Lessons From Nothing/ is a nice reminder that you can easily turn "nothing" into "something" if you make it engaging and interactive.
Not satisfied.......2007-04-10
I don't think that this book is what it claims to be. Too difficult to read and the lessons weren't really that great. I threw it out.
Must Have No Matter Where You Are.......2002-02-11
This is a small compact book that has tons of activities that
you can use with absolutely no resources. In many LDN nations
there will be no resources at all. At times, not even a chalk
board. This book can however, be used anywhere, because it
focuses on Communicative methodology and student-centered activities which allows for better development of L2 acquisition. No matter where you are teaching in the world, if your teaching TEFL/TESOL it should be on your shelf.

Customer Reviews:
Fair But Full of Errors.......2007-02-21
I got this book as a study guide to use along side personal lessons I was taking to prepare for the test. Both my professor and I found numerous mistakes in the grammer in both the written and spoken parts of the test, as well as several mistakes in the prep areas. Also, the person who wrote this book is clearly not a native spanish speaker, for in many places they use idioms that are very american, and its clear that their english grammer peeks on more than one occasion.
None the less, the book wasn't entirely usless, it did help. I wouldn't call it the BEST review for the test, but it atleast does provide some clue as to what the test will be like.
If you can find another book for the same price that comes with audio, get it instead.
Good source for study. Very close to the real tests........2007-01-10
I tested for the 12 credit exam and passed with a very high score (had to in order to get the 12 credits).
The material was very close to the actual test. Some of the pronunciation quizzes had a harsh accent, but it wasn't a problem to understand the conversations. It was very useful to practice with the preparation tests that came in the CDs.
This is an excellent review source!.......2006-09-28
This page says that the review guide was published in 1998; however, the one I recieved from Amazon was copyright 2003 and printed in 2006.
That said, this is an excellent source for reviewing for the test. It has three practice tests, with comprehensive explanations for EVERY correct and incorrect answer for each of the tests. It is also very helpful to listen to the included cds--it gives you a fairly accurate feel of how the real CLEP test will be.
The beginning of the book goes through every part of basic Spanish--everything from pronunciations to verb conjugation. Though it doesn't have the glitzy pictures of my college textbook (there are no pictures, actually), I feel that it is better organized and easier to follow. If you really spend the recommended time with this resource, I believe that passing the CLEP exam will not be really difficult. I passed the exam--but I also used (like I said earlier) a college textbook to augment my studies. Even so, the practice tests and accompanying explanations are very helpful. If anything, the CLEP exam I took seemed easier than the practice exams in this guide.
Highly recommended. I also recommend "501 Spanish Verbs"--that was a good guide for learning verb conjugation.
*I would like to note that the included cds that I received were mis-labeled, meaning that cd A is really cd B and vice-versa. Obviously not a big deal, just a little bothersome at first.

Decent...Gets the Job Done.......2007-06-01
Clearly, this is a book to be used in a classroom setting. It's not a "Princeton Review" or "Barron's" book where there are explanations and answers and practice tests, etc. This is simply a book of questions. It's helpful if your teacher uses it in class, and you can check your answers with the teacher's guide. I noticed that on average, the questions in this book are more difficult than the actual AP test; I was feeling quite depressed about how I would do when I was preparing. My suggestions: use this book for the reading comprehension section and the listening, but practice the "fill-in-the-blank" grammar with College Board's free response questions on their website. After all, those are authentic. This book also contains a good selection of essay prompts to give you ideas about what to write, and the picture stories very nearly match those on the actual test. Overall, it's a good preparation for the test, but the difficulty of some passages relative to others and relative to the test should be taken with a grain of salt.
pretty good.......2004-04-10
I used this book in my french class and I thought it was great practice and very helpful, but yeah, be warned -- this is just the student copy WITHOUT the tapes or the answers so pretty useless it's used in a classroom setting.
disappointed.......2004-02-05
This book is simply a question book. In order to use it properly you need the audio cassettes and the the teacher's guide( to check your answers!) which is impossible to purchase unless you are a teacher. It makes no sense why it is sold on it's own. A complete waste of money........
No answers + no tapes or CDs = Useless.......2003-10-12
I ordered this book after reading the 5 star review, and upon receiving it realized that it is a STUDENT edition, with NO ANSWERS and NO tapes or CDs (or even a written script) for the listening sections! Without answers and tapes, it is useless as an AP study guide! The Amazon description of the book should state this, so other people don't waste their time ordering it. I couldn't find the missing items on Amazon, so I searched the web until I found the teacher guide ($16.97) and tapes ($49.97) on the Prentice Hall webpage.
J'utilise ce livre dans ma classe de français!.......2002-12-10
I use this book in my French class. It's the book mon prof uses to test us. I think the listening exercises provided in here are wonderful. The other exercises are good as well. The vocabulary provided in the back is also very good. It's an excellent prep tool for anyone in AP French language. Bon chance!

A standard Greek reference tool allowing students to learn vocabulary quickly by listing words according to their frequency of use in the New Testament.
Customer Reviews:
Handy Quick Reference.......2007-09-15
Metzger's Lexical Aids has been in my library for many years. I use it as a quick reference on New Testament Greek if I don't want to pull out more exhausitve aids. I espccially like the way he has created several indices including an index of Greek roots and a sort by number of occurrences.
This aid was particularly useful when I first started to learn the Greek but I find myself, even today, going back to it for a quick lookup. I recommend this book for students of New Testament Greek.
I have used other resources as well, many of which were recommended by the late Dr. Gene Scott and continue to be used by his wife, Pastor Melissa Scott. But none seem to be as well worn as my "Lexical Aids".
Great, and affordable little book!!! .......2007-08-27
I bought this book after reading Dr. P.C. Comminos review. This is a gem of a little book. Here's how it's set up: list words by their frequency (from 500 occurances all the way down to 10), words classified according to their root, ino-european family of languages (helps you see the big picture), prepositions in composition with verbs, principal parts of important verbs, feminine nouns of the second declension, and an index of greek words. Yes I got that from the table of contents.
Total length of this book is 100 pages. It is inexpensive and comprehensive for it's size. A superior product given that it is only 100 pages. You can get this book for under ten dollars. There are few purchases that qualify as "No brainers" in my humble opinion. This is one of those "NO BRAINERS." As a side note if your learning greek you should check out Dr. PC Commino's profile. I have found it very informative, and have never been steered wrong by him.
Dynamite comes in small packages.......2007-04-21
Zillions of would-be Greek experts produce books aimed at `helping' students study Greek. The difference between Metzger's little work and many of these is that Metzger was de facto an expert in New Testament Greek (unlike many others who simply pretend to be) and his book actually is helpful. This faithful servant of God, who died earlier this year, helped produce the critical edition of the Greek New Testament and was also editor of the NRSV translation of the Bible. This book contains lists of NT words that occur frequently as well as other mnemonic tools aimed at helping students master Greek vocabulary. What sets this work apart are the stunningly accurate definitions provided. I have used other similar works, but none are nearly as helpful in providing the same accurate definitions. Greek students should work through this book in their first year of Greek and memorize its contents fully. This will put them on a very firm footing when they begin to translate passages from the New Testament.
Great for 'Word Association' Learners.......2007-03-25
Depending upon the style in which the reader learns best, this book may be a great asset.
If you learn via "word association" or by using cognates of words, this will help you tremendously. In most cases, a cognate is listed in the definition, which will enable the reader to associate a modern word to the Greek equivalent. Additionally, words are ordered by root (in the last half of the book) further enabling the student to remember and associate words of like definition.
If you learn by any other method, unfortunately, this book will be nothing more than a long list of words. Although it will be of service to you, it will not be the tremendous service to you that it is to word association types.
In any case, a great resource, especially for the price.
Excellent aid.......2007-01-05
Packed with features and quite economical--the best buy for students studying elementary and intermediate Greek.

For Paramedics, EMTs, Nurses, and Respiratory Therapists.
Customer Reviews:
Invaulable!!!.......2007-04-10
It fits easily into your pocket and is a complete drug reference resource that will cover the drugs of any medical protocol.
An outstanding field reference.......2006-09-02
I have used this book in the field and found it to be an asset. This is a must have for any paramedic. The Home Medication section in the back is the most important for me. It is hard to keep up with the new drug out now, never mind remembering what classification they are. I found this very thorough as far as medic field medications and the explanations, interactions, contraindications, etc.. for each. A must for all students.
As said in another review, waterproof pages would make this book a 5+.
Great Resource.......2005-05-02
This was on the recommended list of books that we get for my Paramedic class and I decided to get it. It is a great resource for gaining information. I have found it not only usful in the classroom but in the field as well, even when I am working as a Basic EMT at the EMS agency I work for and when I am doing my student time, not only with EMS but in the hospital as well.
I highly recommend this book to any EMS student or provider and even any angency as a book to have handy!
Good detailed reference.......2003-06-23
This book was a requirement for my paramedic class (Washington State). It had every drug I needed to look up and gives detailed information about each drug, it's use, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, side effects, contraindications, side effects, and pre-hospital considerations.
However, there are some differences of opinion on some of the drug dosages and uses with my teachers, fellow students, paramedics and other drug guide manuals.
Over all I'd say a good reference, but not the end-all be-all. A useful tool in conjunction with others.
Also, it's pages are not weather resistant like other EMS pocket guides. I rarely use it in the field. However, it's been useful for other study purposes. I'd recommend buying a used copy.

- Why children color eggs at Easter time? What a tree has to do with Christmas?
- Why is there such a debate over the ordination of women in the Catholic Church?
- If organized religion is necessary for a fulfilled humankind? How it all began, anyway?
All these questions and much, much more are answered in this essential and powerful new tool: The HarperCollins Dictionary of Religion -- the definitive guide to understanding religion today.
Customer Reviews:
Good general reference on non-western religions.......1999-07-29
Overall, the book provides a good general desk reference on religion, and is helpful in my field of religion reporting for newspapers. While it provides extensive coverage of non-Western religious traditions, however, it is somewhat lacking in its entries on American religious movements. There is no entry for the "chavurah" movement in Judaism, for example, scant information about Charismatics and just a page and a half about Pentecostals, who represent the fastest growing branch of Chrisitianity in the world and seem to merit more space. Perhaps a future edition could expand its coverage of these more mainstream movements.

Book Description
Arabic in a Flash: Volume I is an excellent new language learning resource for beginning students of Arabic. This unique set of flash cards enables learners to acquire basic Arabic words and their derivatives in an easy-to-use manner at whatever pace the learner prefers.
Each card has Arabic script on one side, with romanized forms and English meanings/derivatives given on the other. Also included is a 32-page reference book with three indexes (an Arabic-English, Arabic, and romanized Arabic listing), as well as useful notes on pronunciation and grammar.
Featuring a convenient, portable size and the 2,240 most common verbs, nouns and adjectives likely to be used in everyday conversations, Arabic in a Flash Volume 1 is the perfect learning tool for anyone interested in Arabic.
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly useful resource.......2007-04-21
Truthfully you could make your own flash cards but the great thing about this course is that the hard work has already been done for you and the author has already selected the most useful words for you to learn. After having learnt words from this course I had my learning reinforced through everyday Arabic conversations and news broadcasts because this course teaches you words in common use. The words from this course really stick in your head and conveniently every flash card has example sentences and other words from the same root.
It's true there are mistakes with the Arabic and English eg. a dot missing here and there, or a missing shadda but you won't have any trouble finding the error because the other source for the word on the card is correct. My only gripe is that one side of the card is appropriately all in Arabic however the reverse size is in Arabic, transliteration and English translation. So it's not possible to test yourself from English-Arabic and the transliteration catches your eye on the reverse side and you don't use the Arabic script as much as you should. Aside from this gripe flash cards are the best way to learn vocabulary fast and this is best flash card course for Arabic I've found.
I intend to buy Volume 2 soon and I hope a 2nd revision is released soon for the first volume with only English on one side, only Arabic on the other side, no transliterations and the necessary spelling corrections.
Great Concept - Poor Quality.......2007-03-20
I have at least ten products that I have purchased over the last five years to help me learn Arabic. The flashcard idea is a good one, but this set is filled with an unbelieveable amount of errors both in Arabic and in English. I stopped counting after 30 errors! Seriously, I don't know that much Arabic to even find close to the number of errors there must be in this product. I called the publisher (Tuttle) twice and emailed twice to request that I be compensated for this poor quality product. The lady on the phone seemed to take in all the information about each and every error that I found (thus far) and took my address and phone number, etc. Still, I have not heard from them.
At last! Smart Arabic flashcards.......2006-08-16
The best part of this flashcard set is that many derivatives and examples are given for each word. 448 main cards include 1792 additional derivatives--this is how Arabic works, if you learn a single root, your knowledge of grammar rules helps you multiply that root into lots and lots of related words. Bottom line, a bigger vocabulary with less memorization. I'd recommend these flash cards to anyone.

This is an excellent book for learning spelling skills........1999-05-25
I used this book as a spelling curriculum when homeschooling my 12-14 year old sons. Rather than having children memorize lists of words, it actually focuses on the rules and skills needed to spell ANY word. The chapters were well-organized and the exercises were effective. Since completing the book, we have been using it as a reference.

Customer Reviews:
Stedmans Oncology words.......2007-01-09
This is the only oncology book I have that gives the staging and grading names and whether they are arabic or roman numeral. This is an important Item. I've used the book quite a bit.
Can't transcribe heme-onc without it.......2004-05-15
As with all of Stedman's word books, this is power-packed and indispensible. I transcribe for cancer clinics, among other clients, and the people at Stedman's do a great job in this specialty as with all of their word books. In addition to hundreds of pages of terms related to cancer and diseases of the blood, there is terrific cross-referencing, appendices with details on different staging and classification systems, names and addresses of many major cancer centers (alphabetized by state, excellent idea), chemo regimens alphabetized by diagnosis, etc.
You may also benefit from the good deal Amazon offers for pairing this with Stedmans' equally fine Radiology book, or, if you would prefer these on a CD, you will find a CD on this site that has the Oncology and Radiology books gathered onto one CD with images etc. I couldn't do my job without Stedman's.
