It is, indeed, Christian counseling that works!.......2007-06-13
As I converted from Islam into Christianity, I have had my own set of issues to deal with. How easy for people to throw in Bible verses right in your face and they think they just "fixed" your pain problem. By leaving Islam, I dealt with rejection as an outcast. I have also had a lot of anger and less trust in people after being betrayed. I have talked to many people of godly counsel, but frankly nobody is like Dan Montgomery. He is not in an ivory tower but he is right down to earth and meets you where you are in a compassionate way showing you how to truly apply the Bible principles in counseling that really"works". I liked a lot what he had to say on feeling God's presence even though when we don't feel like it. I had to read this part in his book over and over again. I even plan to translate to myself in Arabic, my native tongue, and apply it to myself as well as those I evangelize in the Muslim religion. This is "The Lean-Against-the Wall Technique" on pages 115,116,117 and 118. As I have come to explore the American male psyche, this part is the best answer that I can also give in response to the question of why I don't feel like my prayer just hit the wall and I can't feel God. If you read where I have begun all along in my Christian journey and how Dan has helped me, you would really appreciate his book enormously.
Excellent framework for effective therapy.......2007-02-04
This book introduces the reader to the compass model and how to use it to zero in on exactly where a counselee is having problems. The compass theory is easy to understand and to apply in its basic form. Author Dr. Dan Montgomery has developed this technique and shares it with Christian Counselors as an effective counseling tool. Dr. Montgomery is well respected among his peers and has held a license as a Psychologist and Marriage and Family Therapist for over twenty-five years. He has taught at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Psychology, the United States International University, and the University of New Mexico. His work and techniques are praised by the likes of the Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Fuller Theological Seminary.
In the book Dr. Montgomery covers the basics of the Compass system, the anatomy of a counseling session, dealing with the counselee's image of God, and using metaphors and symbolization in therapy. Appendix I provides basic commentary on twenty-five specific techniques that provide quality tools to aid the counselor. In the second appendix he even includes some short True/False self-assessment tests to help map out the counselee's position on the compass.
Written for the Christian Counselor these techniques and the compass model can be used not only by clinicians but also by pastors, chaplains, and others involved in this healing ministry. Christian Counseling that Really Works is highly recommended to everyone involved in counseling in any form.
If you really want to change your behavior, this is the book for you.......2006-08-28
Self-help books fill the shelves but very few provide real, lasting help in making real, lasting changes. This book does. It doesn't matter if you read it as a counselor looking for new ideas to assist patients or as a person seeking to make life changes, this book "really works" as the title says. If you're looking for something that will actually make a difference in the way you cope with life situations, difficult people, personal challenges or emotionally stresses, pick this book up today.
If you want personal growth, read this!.......2006-08-06
I'm a licensed professional counselor who has read a hundred plus
books on counseling and therapy over the past twenty years. Dr.
Montgomery's book on Compass Therapy stands head and shoulders above
the rest. The Self Compass growth tool is the easiest way I've found
to understand personality and behavior. The human nature compass
provides many avenues for healing the mind and heart, body and
spirit. And the 25 techniques offer concrete ways to transform pain
or problems into growth toward wholeness. Altogether a brilliant work!
The Self Compass is a powerful growth tool.......2006-06-04
I've never read anything related to psychology or counseling, but a friend gave me this book and I loved it. The author riveted my attention from beginning to end. I could visualize each case study as though the person was right in front of me. Every point was presented in a logical and memorable way. And the Self Compass growth tool gave me valuable information about myself and other people that I immediately used. I predict that this book will become a bestseller!

understanding myself.......2007-05-01
After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.
A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27
For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.
The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.
With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.
Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.
I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.
This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.
Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25
James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."
His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!
My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23
"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.
I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.
The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.
Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.
To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

A excellent relationship saving book!.......2000-07-08
This book was instrumental in helping me not only discover my souls deep rooted wounds, but also learn how to start healing them by being open, honest and loving. It provided sensible, chronological structure to approaching each healing technique/exercise. This made it easy to follow and learn.
Soul issues are sensitive and sometimes painful to deal with as it is, but the book is well written and the non-threatening approach caused me to want to deal with them. It's a Christian based book although you do not have to be a believer to learn from it. A similar book that is non-Christian based and just as effective is "Getting the Love You Want, A Guide For Couples" by Harville Hendrix. These two books compliment each other very well.
I found in each chapter statements other couples have made that I've said or hear myself saying now. This made the content of the book very real. I could relate to their story which in turn helped me work towards resolving my guilt, pain, fear or conflicts.
I strongly recommend this book to any couple that is in conflict and is ready to do something about changing it. This book causes you to see yourself and your partner differently which allow the more hopeful, positive and loving emotions to surface again. I recommend this book whole-heartedly as it was to me.

Pragmatic guide for accessing community/culture in therapy .......2005-03-12
Rigazio-DiGilio, Ivey, Kunkler-Peck, and Grady do an excellent job of describing theoretical constructs, processes, and practical applications for using community genograms in counseling in order to build on resources and access strengths within individuals, families, and communities. This book goes beyond the rhetoric of including culture and context as important therapeutic considerations, offering those in the helping fields a graphic tool to respectfully and collaboratively explore these dimensions with clients. I found it particularly exciting that the authors offered practical guidance for intervening at a community level and drawing from culture and community to enhance the liberating potential of therapeutic encounters. This is a "must-read" for counselors and therapists who strive to find ways to more intentionally consider individuals and families within their social, historical, and cultural contexts.

In addition they examine problems typically encountered by bereaved teens, and provide clinical case studies that show a range of grieving patterns. The book includes a description of the mourning and funeral rites practised by a variety of religious and ethnic groups, and concludes with a bibliography and a list of community resources.

A Useful Guide for Educators.......2007-01-09
I ordered Death & the Adolescent for a counselor on my staff after we learned that the mother of one of our teens committed suicide. The guide contains a plethora of practical exercises for both group & individual counseling sessions. It is very user friendly and I plan on ordering a copy for each guidance counselor and social worker in my Guidance Department.
